But don't worry, there’s no one way to “dress like a New Yorker." It’s all about taking your aesthetic and forming a look that combines self-expression with surprise. New York style could mean pairing Gap denim with a Gucci bag, or it could mean dressing head-to-toe in the brightest-colored outfit imaginable . The city's street style is a category all on its own, with entire Instagram accounts devoted to capturing the most inventive looks. 

So, if you’re hoping to blend in by standing out—which is how lots of stylish people in New York dress—there are lots of ways to do it that blend comfort with fashion. Not to mention, it's a distinctly walkable city, which means dressing for a variety of situations and temperatures, with comfortable footwear that won’t pinch your feet. You don't necessarily need to dress up in New York, particularly if you're spending the day walking and sightseeing, but it's totally achievable to have an eye-catching look without sacrificing comfort.

Don't be afraid to try this trend and pair your best button-up with a thin black tie, especially if you're headed to an event or upscale dinner. If tailored pants feel too formal, give a maxi skirt a go. You can opt for some feminine touches (like these patent heels) for balance.

Give It Some Red

Expect to see a ton of red in the upcoming seasons. If you want to live the strawberry girl life, it's all about going bold. If it feels like a lot, go with neutral colors in the accessories and outerwear. Something feminine and chic pairs nicely with heavier accessories, like this lug boot, for a perfect study in contrast.

Opt for Khakis

Wide-leg pants, the successor to skinny jeans, aren't going anywhere anytime soon. If you feel like your look needs some extra oomph, wide khakis give a casual workwear vibe. They can easily skew more formal with a button-up or more relaxed with an oversized denim shirt or shacket.

Do Sweat the Details

If you're not one to lean in 100% with a bright color, there are tons of ways to bring red (or other bright hues) into your wardrobe. Part of a cohesive look is in the details, as with a splash of red on the nails and toenails that match with red lipstick. It's the perfect way to elevate an otherwise basic outfit.

Shorts All Day

If you're visiting during transitional weather, shorts can help you feel cooler while still feeling stylish—especially if you're normally a skirt person. A long-sleeve on top can help if the weather's getting a bit brisk, and a high heel in a matching color elevates it from sporty to chic. 

Bring Lots of Denim

Trust us, the Canadian tuxedo does not have to look silly. The trick is to wear slightly different but complementary colors and textures, giving it a tonal, head-to-toe cohesion. As seen here, a relaxed fit throughout makes the whole thing feel more like a jumpsuit, with a tiny but fabulous bag to round it out.

Go Monochrome

Going all out with a single color can absolutely shout "fashion," but instead of the cliche all-black New York look, why not try something in another neutral like olive or brown? Changing up the texture and material brings tension to the look, and picking a skirt that goes over knee-length boots helps draw the eye all the way down.

Known in fashion circles as "olive oil green," this light, creamy green shade is another trendy color that also happens to be a perfect pop of color on a neutral outfit. The green should be the standout, so pair it with white pants or light denim to match the lightness without detracting from its vibrancy.

When the weather dips below 50, a snuggly sweater is always a good choice. Plus, fuzzy teddy bear vibes are on trend (how convenient!). To look more "cozy" and less "teddy bear," go with a more classic shape and pattern. The pop of color can be in the accessories, like these complementary red shoes.

Bring The Bag

If you've got an upscale bag that you're just dying to use, this is that moment. What's great about a standout piece is that it'll work in different contexts, meaning a single bag can work for shopping, dinner, meetings, and everything in between. Give the bag its moment to shine by keeping everything else streamlined.

Go Out in PJs

The "pajama chic" look has been around for more than a moment, but it's still a surprising choice (and therefore perfect for New York) when paired with more tailored pieces. If going with a matching set feels like too much, opt for just a top or bottom. Here, the PJ bottoms work in place of denim or linen pants. 

Wear Your Loudest Coat

When in doubt, break out that gorgeous patterned jacket hanging out in the back of your closet. A standout coat can elevate every outfit in addition to working as a transitional weather must-have. Here, it's a head-to-toe look, but it would work just as easily over all black, all white, or even denim. 

If you're into tops that show a bit of skin, this is the perfect time to break them out for evening wear. You'll be in good company: a sliver of skin is still totally streetwear-appropriate. Showing a little skin isn't just fun and surprising: lower V-necks and scoop necks are also popular at the moment.

Color Block It

Okay, so maybe you don't have a pair of jeans with one tartan leg, but still . If you have a dress of two colors, or a shirt with a striking graphic design, this is the perfect time to bring it out. Everything else in this outfit feels classic and timeless, so the pop of color is truly that: a pop that feels surprising and counterintuitive.

Besides the obvious practical benefits of layering when the weather's going to shift throughout the day, layers give texture and dimensionality to a look. Early spring can be a tricky one when it comes to what to wear in New York City. Why? Because the weather could go either way for you.

Some people visit New York City in early spring and get glorious sunshine and mild weather, but some experience the last bits of winter and get very cold temperatures. Which can make figuring out what to wear in New York City in early spring a little more confusing.

Late Spring / Early Summer (May, June)

Late spring and early summer tends to be a gorgeous time to visit New York City. So that’s your first bit of good news!

Late spring and early summer tend to enjoy those balmy temperatures, without the crazy humidity that the height of summer often brings.

And if you’re wondering what to wear in New York City during this time of year – the answer tends to be… dress for sunshine!

Expect to see good weather, and expect to enjoy the sunshine… But have back-up layers for slightly wet weather too, because NYC is fond of a spring or summer downpour.

Here are some essentials for what to wear in New York City in late spring and early summer …

• what to wear in New York City in spring…. Lightweight, easy-to-dry clothing (summer dresses, cotton tops, light shorts)
• Have a few outer layers on hand for cooler evenings (denim jackets or leather jackets work well for this!)

If you’re prone to overheating in the humidity, then you really want to pack light, airy and natural materials.

When packing for the height of summer in NYC, most of my list is going to be very similar to the one above.

But in the summer, you’ll want to check out NYC with a few added extras…

• Lightweight, cool, easy-to-wear clothing
• Natural fabric like linen and cotton will keep you cool in the humidity
• A hat and sunglasses for keeping yourself out of the sun
• Anti chaffing shorts for under skirts and dresses
• A swimming costumer – incase you want to check out one of the city’s outdoor spas!
• An umbrella (for those unpredictable summer storms)
• Shorts, skirts, flowy dresses – are all going to be your best friend.

Autumn / Fall (October, November)

Autumn and fall are one of the nicest times to visit the city. The temperature cools down, and the city comes alive again after suffering through the summer heat.

As far as a general vibe at this time of year, in early autumn, the temperatures cool down, and there are less storms and pressure to worry about.

Yes, you may get some rain here and there, but generally, the weather is quite manageable at this time of year, which makes choosing what to wear in New York City at this time of year, relatively simple.

As late autumn rolls in (late October and November), the temperatures will start dropping even more, and you may want to bring those extra layers and warm coats if you’re sensitive to a chill in the air.

• Light, warm layers (a couple of jacket options are recommended!)
• Jeans and denim are perfect for this time of year, as they will keep the wind out and keep you warm.

At least once during your trip to NYC, you’re going to want to splurge on a nice meal out, or some rooftop cocktails, and when that time comes, you’ll want to look the part!

So always pack something you feel great in for those nights when you want to feel a little fancy.

Always pack… The comfiest shoes you own

When it comes to what to wear in New York City, comfy shoes are MUST.

We know clothing is important when it comes to what to wear in New York City, but shoes and footwear are just as important too.

Don’t even think about visiting NYC with a pair of flimsy sandals or flip-flops for all the sightseeing and walking. Comfy trainers / sneakers or boots are a must and crucial for our list of what to wear in New York City.

Usually when I’m in NYC, I’ll easily reach 20,000 steps (if not, more!) per day. So wearing comfortable shoes is an absolute necessity.

Always pack…. Anti chaffing shorts

Another suggestion for what to wear in New York City, is something for anyone who wears dresses and skirts and suffers with thigh chaffing.

If this is you, then you’re going to want to pack some anti-chaffing shorts for any time you want to wear skirts or dresses.

With all the photos you’re bound to be capturing, and all the videos for TikTok, your phone battery is going to be depleted pretty quickly!

So trust me, you’ll want to pack a portable charger!

Always pack… A waterproof jacket and an umbrella

Probably one of the most important items for what to wear in New York City. A waterproof jacket and an umbrella!

Listen, NYC weather in unpredictable and there’s always a chance of rain in the city.

Instead of wearing those god awful tourist ponchos (you know the ones I mean!) just pack yourself a lightweight waterproof jacket instead and keep it in your bag. Or, an umbrella.

I’ve been caught in summer storms than drenched me head to toe – and I wish I had kept one on me just in case!

Always pack… A secure day bag

I find that bag theft and pick-pocketing isn’t as bad in NYC as other big cities (especially compared to Europe) but it’s worth being safe, so I usually aim to carry a bag that feels secure.

If you’re opting for a rucksack, choose one with slash-proof material and one with secure zip fastenings.

If you’re carrying a handbag, then a secure clasp, or zip should do the trick. I also tend to prefer cross-body bags because they let me keep my hands on my belongings at all times.

I’ve pulled looks for glossy magazines, styled models and celebrities, and written all about the latest trends. And just in case you couldn’t tell from my quick stride and fast-paced lifestyle, my black attire is a dead giveaway that I’m a New Yorker through and through — yes, it’s true that we wear lots of black. What can I say, it’s the secret to effortless looks that can take us from the office to drinks or errands to brunch.

Since I’m always on the pulse of what’s happening in the New York fashion scene, I get asked a lot: What do New Yorkers actually wear these days? If you want to learn how to blend in with the locals and not stick out like a tourist, you’re in the right place, because I know as much about the latest bag shape (the ultra-mini) as much as I do about the latest must-see Broadway show ( Shucked ).

New Yorkers love to walk. We choose it over mass transit to get to work, meet up with friends, or head over a bridge to another borough; walking is our main form of cardio. And despite what you may have seen on TV (I’m looking at you, Sex and the City ) New Yorkers aren’t walking around in stilettos. This makes comfortable yet stylish sneakers a must-own. The good news is there is always some form of sneaker trending to make it easy. 

All white with a retro look, this Reebok sneaker fits right in with the dad sneaker style that’s “in” at the moment. They're also super versatile. I've worn them with dresses, crop flare jeans, and leggings to head to Solidcore Pilates. One of the best parts about New York style is that you can keep things casual, as long as the look isn’t sloppy, so you can take these from walking all day straight to an early evening glass of wine at a wine bar.

To get the effortless New York cool girl vibe, you must own a leather (or faux-leather) jacket — a piece that can read edgy rocker or sophisticated hipster. While mine has been in my wardrobe for years and has proven to be a worthy investment, you don’t need to spend big bucks. Come spring and summer, New Yorkers get outside for picnics, brunching outdoors, or their morning commutes. So I always add a breathable, flowy maxi dress to my outfit rotation to stay fashionable yet comfy in the city heat. This pretty white tiered style is my new addition. Yes, black dresses are a must (see below), but we New Yorkers like to play with shape and color and femininity with dresses. 

The versatile Caslon maxi dress works for everything from bridal showers to the office to picnics in Central Park’s Sheep Meadow. On ultra-hot days, the billowing skirt will keep the air flow and on chilly nights, a denim or leather jacket will layer on beautifully to have dinner streetside. For a similar and less expensive option, this $49 eyelet white maxi dress at Amazon is equally pretty and ready for summer picnics. 

Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag

Ever since the return of the belt bag a few years back, I have been wearing the athleisure staple across my body every day. Not only is it super convenient, but it also helps relieve back pain and allows for a more minimal, easy-to-carry purse. It also keeps my hands free if I need to schlep multiple bags home after a stop at Trader Joe's. 

Lululemon’s Everywhere belt bag is beloved for its sleekness, water-repellent material, and interior and exterior pockets. It's such a popular and highly sought-after belt bag, the black version sells out often. (But luckily, it’s still in stock right now.) I love that the black bag always matches my look, taking me everywhere from Barry’s class in the morning to a concert over a bomber jacket at night. When warm weather hits, I sometimes switch to an ultra-colorful style, like this hip pack from the Cotopaxi x Hoka collaboration, to get a fresh, fun look.

Birdies The Kiwi Sandal

Here’s a style secret for you: New Yorkers love to keep a spare pair of sandals or flats in their bag to spruce up their outfits; they simply wear comfy sneakers to commute and then swap their shoes once at their destination. When the temperature heats up, I opt for a stylish flat sandal like Birdies’ new buckle-front Kiwi Sandals . Known for their comfy styles, this brand is even loved by celebrities (Meghan Markle has been spotted in the brand).

But what I particularly love about these slides is how sleek and lightweight they are. They easily slip into my bag for the office to change into post commute or to have on hand if heels get too much. I also know they will be awesome to pack for vacation since they will take up little to no space in my luggage and work with dresses, shorts, and any beach look. (Note: If you prefer a closed-toe flat, Birdie's suede loafers are a comfy go-to option). 

Buenos Ninos V-neck Jumpsuit

Jumpsuits and rompers are one-and-done pieces that keep your look streamlined and minimal and make getting dressed a dream. In this jumpsuit, I know I will arrive in Queens for a Greek dinner with my sister and friends looking polished and refined, even though I just walked 15 blocks and was squashed in a hot and crowded subway. This style goes from daytime barbecue on a friend's roof in Brooklyn, paired with my favorite Superga platforms , to dinner for a friend's birthday on the Upper East Side, with the addition of a gold belt, and a swap for bright sandals.

Mejuri Tube Medium Hoops

We New Yorkers lead busy lives. I mean, why live in the city if you aren't going to take advantage of the restaurants, bars, walks, shows, etc? I am always thinking of ways to simplify routines and my look so I can transition from plan to plan with ease. After getting two more piercings on my ear a few years ago, I enacted the golden rule of New York: Keep. It. Simple. and decided to wear only gold huggie earrings. Not only are they simple yet stylish, but they are also more comfortable to work out in and sleep on than post-studs. And seriously, less is more here.

I always turn to Mejuri for jewelry options that are approachable in price and style. Their simple medium hoops are always exactly what I am looking for, as are their twisted rings and personal necklaces. Since I have five piercings on my left ear, I also supplement with more affordable earring options from Amazon, like these yellow-plated huggies . For special occasions, or when I feel like making a statement earring, I swap out the pair for these Alexis Bittar crystal twisted hoops . I find this New York-based designer to make the best modern pieces to mix in with your more personal ones.

Everlane Organic Cotton Box-Cut Tee

We all know the beauty of a well-made tee. It's a closet and capsule wardrobe staple that works with a suit for an interview or denim shorts and sandals for an outdoor barbecue. However not all t-shirts are created equal, and I have struggled to find options that complement my body and are not too tight. My favorite tee is the Sno Cone from AYR , a New York-based label. Their tees are my go-to because they hang flatteringly on my body and are made from the softest cotton (Oprah is a fan too). They're a splurge, so I usually wait to buy a new one before a big trip, so I have a fresh tee in all my pictures. 

But equally loved by New Yorkers are Everlane’s excellent, more wallet-friendly T-shirts (this Organic Cotton Box-Cut Tee is highly rated) as well as classics from Madewell . I also love Aday’s silky tees because their wrinkle-free fabric is great for running around the city and perfect for travel.  

Madewell Oversized Straight Hem Shirt

Timeless pieces with a twist are classic New York style, and an oversized button-down shirt is a prime example that embraces the menswear trend with a more relaxed feel. I am eager to try this button-down shirt from Amazon with a similar vibe, and I am also drawn to this style from Madewell since it has a very summery feel. Crafted with an eco-friendly linen blend, I know this will look crisp and feel good when the summer humidity starts. You can pair this with any bottom; wide-leg jeans, loose shorts, mini skirt, or even wear it as a beach cover-up on vacation.

Open Edit Oversize Linen Blend Blazer

Another menswear piece that is a year-round staple is the oversized blazer. New Yorkers’ blazers get a lot of use since they’re equally office appropriate and ready for a night out, depending on what you wear underneath. I am eyeing this oversized linen blazer from Nordstrom to add to my spring-summer rotation. Its lightweight linen blend won't cause me to overheat on my commute but will save me from getting chilly while sitting in an air-conditioned office, restaurant, or subway train. The long length offers more coverage, a must for sitting on subway seats with shorter skirts or shorts, and it creates a flattering line. To change your look, try wearing it “editor style” by draping it over your shoulders without putting your arms through the holes. 

To take the look one step further, you can even add a matching short. (I’m not sure if I am a two-piece suit person, but matching sets are heavily trending in the city.) Or for another variation, try snagging a blazer in another bright and playful color.

Béis Sport Duffle 

Living in the city, I’m always on the go. Between fitness classes, freelance jobs, and after-work plans, I rarely carry just a single bag for all my things, and when I do, I constantly feel like I forgot something. While I have a collection of bags and totes to support my lifestyle, there's currently one bag I have been embracing more than others, the Béis duffel bag . The bag has a spacious interior with zipper pockets that help me keep organized. It can fit my laptop, sweaty activewear, water bottle, Nike cycling shoes, and more. The roomy duffel is currently my travel bag of choice as well. A slip pocket in the back unzips to be a trolley sleeve that sits comfortably on top of my roller carry-on luggage. It’s also the perfect size to fit under the airplane seat and hold all my flight essentials like books, water bottles, and electronics. For anyone visiting New York City, this will be a handy bag to carry any souvenirs while shopping.

Vuori Performance Joggers

Elevated casual is one way I would describe my everyday style, and even the most stylish New Yorkers embrace athleisure, too. A top piece that is always in the mix is refined sweatpants, and the pair I most frequently pull from the drawer is Vuori's Performance Jogger . Not only are they the softest pants I own, but they are also comfortable yet put together. They can take me from a Solidcore Pilates class to the post office; plus, the joggers look equally cute with my running sneakers as they do with my favorite Birkenstocks .

They are also fabulous to sleep in and are always my go-to pair to pack for vacation pajamas since they are also cute and cozy with coverage if you are traveling with friends or family — and bonus: they fold up very thin in your suitcase.

Spanx Flare Jeans 

While I, and other New Yorkers, embraced skinny jeans for years, they’re long gone from the city’s streets. These days, you see wider leg shapes reminiscent of the ’90s or further back. Flare jeans, for example, are heavily embraced. Recently, while walking down Park Avenue en route to an office where I am freelancing, a man passed me and yelled, “What is this, 1969? Are you heading to Woodstock?” That’s a very New York moment — strangers love to share what they think — but the wide-leg jean look I was rocking is everywhere. Spanx has an excellent dark wash flare jean option with hidden shaping technology; I love that this look is super flattering. It is also a zipper-fly style with stretch, so I can comfortably wear it to walk to work, sit all day, and head to happy hour.

Zenni Cat-Eye Sunglasses

After my wallet, phone, and keys, sunglasses are the fourth essential in my bag when I leave the house. Sunglasses are needed year around in the city to keep the sun's glare out of your eyes. Skyscrapers might shade some rays, but they can also reflect them. Shades are also useful for staying incognito from an old coworker or a horrible first date that you would rather avoid. Because although this city is super populated, it becomes small quickly. While I tend to gravitate toward timeless styles like classic aviators or giant oversized shades , I am trying to embrace trendier styles this season. I gravitated towards this cat-eyed style since they felt super summer, with the transparent frames and pink and blue lenses. I also love that the affordable price point allows me to do something out of my comfort zone.

Weaczzy Easy Summer Short Sleeve Casual Dresses V-neck Dress

Little black dresses are far from a secret, but they do become heavy hitters in the spring and summer in New York. Not only do they help us stick to our all-black aesthetic, but their versatility is vast. You can easily dress up a black dress with heels and a leather jacket or down with sneakers and a jean jacket for Saturday brunch with friends. Any black dress with a streamlined silhouette will have you fitting right in, whether in the Williamsbourgh or the West Village.

The good news? As someone who has lived here for the better part of the last two decades, I can tell you firsthand: anything goes. New Yorkers wear anything and everything. Despite what you might have heard elsewhere , there is no such thing as looking like a tourist — unless, of course, you’re unprepared for the weather (or are blocking the sidewalk).

That’s where we come in –– we’re breaking down what to wear in NYC in summer so that you can feel prepared for any weather, activity, and occasion. Read on to organize your suitcase with ease and leave the hard decisions — like where to find the best New York pizza — for when you get here! Happy trails!

New York’s Average Summer Weather

While New York is still a place where you can experience all four seasons, summer has recently extended its stay from mid-May to as late as early October.

That said if you’re wondering what to put on your packing list for NYC in summer, the month of your trip matters.

If you’re headed to the city in May or June, the weather is likely to be warm (between 65-80ish degrees Fahrenheit) but midler than say, July/August, when walking around town is generally — I won’t sugarcoat it — a sweaty experience (between 70-95ish degrees Fahrenheit). September is also usually pretty warm, though generally less humid and breezier than the peak of summer (between 70-80ish degrees Fahrenheit). 

The best advice for what to wear in New York in summer is to be prepared with light (!) layers. While it’s unlikely you’ll need a really heavy sweatshirt (save for a rainy day in May or June), you’ll want to pack a few items that you can throw on while traversing between the effects of our urban heat island and the joy of indoor air conditioning. 

On a micro-level, plan your NYC packing list for summer to account for the neighborhoods you’ll be visiting. Midtown is full of tall skyscrapers that lock in the summer heat, while a stroll through the shaded trails of Central Park or by the Hudson River will feel noticeably cooler.

For this reason, your best bet is to have a few easily portable layers to take you from one activity to the next! 

New York Packing List for Summer

The go-tos for what to wear in nyc in summer.

Now, assuming that you’ve packed your own pajamas, undergarments, and toiletries (please choose your own adventure here!!) it’s time to break down what to wear in New York in summer . 

One thing I’ve learned about living in New York is that you are often out all day — if you’re hoping to see a lot of the city, it’s likely that you’ll be away from your hotel for at least half of the day.

Your New York packing list for summer should include clothes that can easily take you between brunch, a museum, a park stroll, a rooftop happy hour, and a Broadway show. 

My ten cents? The secret to your New York summer packing list is monochromatic, breathable sets — think cotton or linen pants/top sets , shorts and button-up shirts , or one-piece rompers and jumpsuits .

For a more casual New York City itinerary , bodysuits or t-shirts and jean shorts work well, while you may want to throw in a comfortable midi- or maxi-dress if you’re headed to something slightly more formal later on.

A bonus tip on the t-shirt front — a fun way to commemorate your trip and rock some New Yorker style is to buy some merch from your favorite local business. There are dozens of famous delis, bakeries, and bookshops ready and waiting! Not to mention we have some awesome vintage and thrift stores in NYC .

The good news about deciding what to wear in NYC in summer is that in general, New York is a more casual place in the warmer months — it’s simply too warm to be super gussied up. Unless you’re dining at a restaurant that demands suit jackets, it’s very likely that a day-to-night ensemble will work.

If you are making a pit stop to change before going out at night and want to wear a dress, the most used item in my NYC packing list for summer is the humble slip dress .

Dress it up with some jewelry or a comfortable block heel, or keep it casual with sneakers or flat sandals. If you prefer a pant look, try a wide-leg linen trouser or shorts with a crop tank or t-shirt!

The last step of your go-to look should be adding a light summer layer — while my jean jacket gets a ton of use between May and October, a light linen or cotton blazer , oversized button-up, or (very) lightweight sweater to throw on in air conditioning or if there is (hopefully) a light breeze at night. 

What To Wear When It’s Really, Really Hot in NYC 

“It’s ten-thousand degrees, and I don’t want to wear real clothes!” you cry. I hear you. While it’s fun to plan a few lewks in your packing list for NYC in summer, the reality is that there is a chance that you’ll be visiting the city when it feels a little bit like walking through a frying pan.

If you’re stressing out over your New York packing list for summer on the surface of the sun, we have the solution: chic activewear.

And by chic, I really mean whatever activewear you want to rock — when summer hits its peak here, New Yorkers are all united by the fact that we walk and take the subway and need to stay as cool as possible. And all of a sudden, we are all athletes! Ha. 

Personally, the invention of exercise dresses with built-in shorts has changed my life, but your New York summer packing list should include the activewear you like best — a great way to look put together in activewear is to rock a matching activewear set or the frequently- sported track short and a white t-shirt combination.

But in the end, I don’t want to be too prescriptive here — your New York packing list for summer should keep you feeling comfortable and confident above all else — it’s too hot to feel like you’re wearing something you’d never don otherwise. 

If things get really, really, really hot, you also have the option of checking out the city’s beaches . Throw a swimsuit in your suitcase for any impromptu trips to Coney Island or the Rockaways, and keep an eye out for sharks…

New York Summer Packing Accessories 

If you’re wondering what to wear in NYC in summer, your accessories game is perhaps the most important of all.

First and foremost, let’s talk shoes — your NYC packing list for summer should always, always include sneakers. Sneakers are the lifeblood of New York City summers! We’re a city that never sleeps because we are walking around — a lot.

Sneaker culture is very strong in NYC, and while you can certainly take this opportunity to rock your most prized limited-edition Nike, any sneaker — from “Dad shoes”  to classic white Keds — will work for your packing list for NYC in summer along with any of the most comfortable walking shoes for travel . You’ll be on your feet more than you can imagine.

While you could likely get away with only packing a sneaker (save for dining somewhere super fancy!), you may also want to bring a few additional options. Sandals with straps are a great choice for walking around, because frankly, you don’t want your foot to slip out of a flip-flop and meet the not-exactly-clean sidewalks of the Big Apple.

If you want to dress things up, a loafer or a block heel work well, though I wouldn’t recommend wearing them if you’ll be out all day.

If the weather is a little cooler and you’re wondering what to wear in New York in summer that isn’t a sneaker, sandal, or loafer, a fun option is to try a combat boot to add a little edge to your look — however, they will take up a lot of room in your suitcase, so I’d advise not bringing them unless it looks temperate enough to wear them a few times! 

Your New York summer packing list should also include at least one hat — if you’re going to be out all day, you’ll want a little bit of built-in shade!

A baseball hat is not only an easy, timeless accessory, but it won’t take up a ton of space in your suitcase (after all, I’ve already advised you to bring lots of layers… which you’ll need room for). If baseball hats aren’t your thing, an easily foldable or packable sun hat works too!

Your packing list for NYC in summer should also include at least one set of sunglasses — though if you forget them, there are quite a few places to snag a new pair! 

While we’re at it, if you’re wondering what to wear in New York in summer, sunscreen should be at the top of your list. Even though you’re not (necessarily) sitting on the beach, walking around all day will certainly expose you to plenty of UV rays.

I’d recommend bringing some travel-sized spray or liquid sunscreen to apply at the beginning of the day and a handy sunscreen stick for reapplication. 

When it comes to bags, your New York summer packing list should include a few options. For day-to-night itineraries in more casual settings, a lightweight backpack is an excellent way to have everything you need for the day without sacrificing your shoulder to the cause.

If you are out for a shorter amount of time, a tote bag works well, too — New Yorkers love their tote bags, and there’s always the opportunity to pick up some merch from your favorite business, restaurant, or cultural institution! 

If you’re out for a shorter period of time or walking long distances and want to pack light, it’s helpful to stay hands-free by putting a crossbody purse or a crossbody belt bag on your NYC packing list for summer. Believe me, you don’t want to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge with a giant purse. 

When it comes to rain jackets and umbrellas, summer weather in New York can change quickly — I don’t recommend bringing anything too hefty on your NYC packing list for summer, but a small travel umbrella and a lightweight, foldable rain shell are great to keep in your bag if there’s any chance of rain. 

Given the heat, you’ll want to stay properly hydrated — and though you can certainly purchase water bottles out in the world, you will save money if you carry a water bottle .

After all, New York City tap water is some of the best in the country and many public institutions have water fountains! If you don’t want to haul a large reusable bottle around all day, a collapsible water bottle is a good option to stay cool and travel light. 

If there’s one accessory I’d recommend on your NYC packing list for summer above all else — it’s a portable phone charger . When you’re out all day, taking photos, and videos, and using GPS maps to navigate the city, your battery will drain fast.

Whether it’s a plug-in brick or a magnetic case attachment , a portable phone charger will save you time (you don’t want to waste precious vacation hours sitting by an outlet somewhere) and money (those portable chargers at souvenir shops are always overpriced!). 

Whether you have every minute planned or your only plan is to wander the grid, I hope that this list is a helpful starter for what to wear in New York in summer.

And regardless of whether you follow it to T, use some of it, or scoff, “that’s not what I want to wear at all”, I support you — after all, the most important part of dressing like a New Yorker is being yourself!

New York City attracts tourists from all over the world, and while you might be one of them, it doesn’t mean you have to look like it!

When you visit one of the top fashion capitals in the world, your wardrobe needs to be on point. You want to blend in with the stylish locals, but stand out when it matters – and that means packing the perfect mix of trendy, high fashion, and effortless pieces.

Here are a few New York outfits that will make people think you’ve lived there forever:

Keep it Simple

Ironically enough, the first rule to blending in with the chic residents of New York is to stop over-thinking your wardrobe. New Yorkers have a way of using the most basic pieces to create a fashion-forward outfit.

As long as you’re choosing the right fit, you can’t go wrong with a t-shirt and jeans combo. Throw on an oversized, structured coat and apply a bright lip color to transform your basics into an effortlessly chic ensemble.

So, switch out your diamond studs for a wild pair of earrings and trade in your everyday bag for a funky statement piece. After all, where else but New York can you wear a bright red purse with a gold deer dangling from it?

Pack a pair of feminine brogues for the days you spend outdoors, and choose your outfit with that same idea in mind. Think hooded jackets, scarves, and light, loose-fitting sweaters.

Even your makeup should be practical and ready for anything. Opt for a CC cream that moisturizes, evens skin tone, and protects you from the sun’s rays.

When in doubt, pack black. New Yorkers are notorious for dressing head to toe in the color, and that can seem a little dreary to those used to lighter palettes. But don’t fear the dark side!

There’s an easy trick for making an all-black outfit less Scary Spice and more Posh: just mix up your textures. Try pairing a sheer top with patent-leather heels and grab a velvety clutch to add more dimension to your look.

Whether you’re in Midtown, SoHo, or Brooklyn, your NYC outfit will scream, “I live here”. Now go out and own those sidewalks!

Interesting ideas. Great wats to work with and around. To dress for NYC like these ideas are good in autumns. But a big beware if you’re going to NYC in the winter. And summer is the very opposite. Winters can be very cold, and more than that. They can be raw, with super high biting cold winds whipping through and streets and sidewalks can be so messy. So cute shoes, be careful. Be Practical, wear serious non-slip soled waterproof shoes or boots. Thats a must. If you’re attending some major function then fine for cute shoes, just grab an uber or cab and get dropped off door to door. If your taking walking it, or taking the subway then pack your cute stuff and change out when you arrive. Otherwise your cute shoes will no longer be cute, but a wreck. As could the lower part of any pant worn. Sidewalks and streets can really be a challenging mess of slush and grime in wet, snowy winters. And its no joke to need a seriously warm coat, and a hat that will not get blown off of your head. And a warm scarf, gloves. I wear a very long coat or jacket in the winter, one with a faux trimmed hood to cut off the wind from my face. The sharp freezing winds wind through the streets and the tall buildings making the winds worse. And I’m used to freezing cold winters but only with dressing properly. Wearing black is the easiest way to hide and/or rub off any of the mess from being out on winter days.

Headed to NYC for my birthday in 2 months. This gave me some great ideas!

What to Wear in New York City: An NYC Packing List (with SECRET tips from a local)

Not sure what to wear in New York City and desperately searching for the perfect NYC packing list?

Makes sense to me since as a local New Yorker, I can tell you with the utmost assurance that the weather in NYC is manic at best (so always check the weather prior to your New York City trip since it can change rapidly from day to day)

New York City is one of those rare and magical places where you can literally wear just about anything and no one will even look twice.

No, really.

You could walk around in a giant Teletubby suit and people would assume that you’re just a lost, costumed character from Times Square.

Yeah, we’re used to the incredibly weird and totally embrace it. So do the same when creating your very own New York City packing list.

Because let’s be honest:

Where else in the world would you find a no pants day on the subway?

That’s why:

It can be difficult, at best, to create a perfect, NYC packing list if you’re not from the area.

Because seriously:

It can be hard to figure out what constitutes chic, fashion-forward, NYC attire that will help you look and feel like a confident local; a local who desperately avoids eye contact while confidently, and briskly, walking down the street (hint, hint, do this and you will look even MORE like a local). 

Now, I’ll gonna be brutally honest here:

You definitely won’t find me on any New York City Fashion Week catwalk any time soon.

As a native New Yorker who has lived here for well over twenty years, I can show you what to wear in NYC so that you can blend in with the locals.

And lesson number one?

Leave the scrunchy at home. No respectable NYer wears a scrunchie. And if they do, it’s to a SoulCycle Class, while carrying an organic, antioxidant-rich, Kombucha Tea.

So for now:

Just sit back, relax, take off that I heart NY shirt, and grab an authentic, NYC bagel with a smear of cream cheese to satiate your hunger as we swan dive into this local’s guide on what to wear in NYC.

Obviously, you’re gonna need a super sleek, stylish, and totally practical day bag to hold all of your crap while you’re schlepping through NYC on the subway (cabs are way too expensive and there’s a ton of traffic so buses can take forever).

***Overall, NYC is a pretty safe city. I’ve lived here for well over twenty years and have never had a problem with pickpockets or muggers. So, while you don’t need to go out and buy an assortment of crazy anti-theft devices, like a money belt, do use common sense and try to avoid parts of the city that look a bit sketchy.***

Like the rest of the world, we in NYC love a good pair of booty poppin’ skinny jeans.

No NYC packing list would be complete without an uber cute pair of dark skinny jeans.

And in fairness:

No booty pop is needed but they do need to make your butt look cute and make you feel as though you’re wearing the most comfortable pair of sweat pants EVER.

And you’re gonna need a BOATload of comfort after eating all the delicious bagels and pizza that NYC has to offer.

Because if nothing else, NYC knows how to do food right.

That’s why I live and die by these Aviator travel jeans!

Not only are they the most comfortable pair of jeans that I’ve ever worn. but they’re true to size, make you look/feel amazing, and have five insanely large pockets, with zippers, that can fit even your behemoth passport.

But the cherry on top of this sundae of awesome?

These jeans are incredibly well made and will probably last longer than any cockroach on the planet since they’re durable, flexible, and breathable (the heavens open up as a choir of angels sing and rejoice).

Personally:

I go with a dark wash, or black, pair jeans since I think they look a little chicer, but you can’t really go wrong with any of the clothes on Aviator’s site.

The only teeny tiny drawback?

These jeans are $110 a pair. I know, pretty pricey.

These pants are so well made that buying a single pair of these jeans is way cheaper than purchasing jeans of lesser quality every two months.

I know not everyone can afford a $110 pair of jeans. If this sounds like you then check out these Levi’s Gold Label Jeans.

I wore these before I got my Aviator’s and think they’re a viable alternative since they look nice, are true to size, have a comfy elastic waistband (it’s also a control top waist that holds in your muffin top and makes you look a solid 5 pounds lighter), and cost just $25 a pair.

Perfect for any ladies out there who are on a budget but still wanna look and feel GOOD.

3. Fashionable Black Leggings

Anyone who reads my blog knows of my incredible fondness for black leggings.

What’s not to love? They’re comfortable AF, easy to pack, versatile, cheap, and are just an all-around, essential piece of clothing that every woman should pack when traveling to NYC.

Why you may wonder?

Well, you want to be comfortable since you’ll be walking around a lot, especially if you plan on doing any hiking in or near New York City .

You’ll also want to pack a TON of layers since the weather in NYC can change dramatically from one day to the next.

That’s why, leggings are key when packing for NYC.

Just pair them with a nice chunky knit sweater, scarf, and cool pair of boots (no heels, you’ll kill your feet) for a casual look, or dress them up with a nice sequence dress and a glam pair of ballet flats.

Boom, you’re done! Super easy and super comfy.

However, not just any pair of leggings will do. They need to be durable enough not to rip every time you wear them, but they also can’t make you look like you just walked out of a CrossFit class meant for Olympic champions.

Haha, me, do CrossFit? Talk about a JOKE!

Anyway, I love these American Apparel leggings because not only are they uber comfy (even after you wash them and they shrink a bit), but they come up over my stomach and prevent me from sporting a wicked awful muffin top of DOOM!

They cost just $20 and come in colors that I legit, didn’t even know existed. 

So , definitely try these leggings out and let me know what you think.

4. Timberland Boots

I like to be as transparent with my readers as humanly possible.

I’ll be the first one to admit that I haven’t actually worn a pair of Timberlands since I spent my summers working at a stable…in ye olde middle school.

Yeah, it’s been awhile.

However, It would be remiss of me not to mention Timberlands on this NYC packing list since almost every NYer on the planet owns, loves, and worships all that is Timberland.

I’d lose what little NYC street cred I have left if Timberlands didn’t make this list.

Personally though:

I still see them as construction boots and would never wear them outside of a stable.

But, clearly I’m in the minority.

And I do know from personal experience that they are comfortable, durable, and basically the unofficial uniform of New York City.

Which makes sense since the streets of New York City are filthy, making it imperative for everyone to own a quality pair of work boots that will keep their feet warm and dry when the wrath of the polar vortex rains down upon New York City.

Timberlands tend to hold up MUCH better than UGGS in the rain/snow, and come in a variety of different colors and styles that will suit just about anyone.

They now make Timberlands in high heels and colors like pale pink. Need I say more?

I’ve heard that Tims do run a little big so I definitely get a half size smaller than you normally do. 

They’ll still be comfortable but easy to wear with a pair of heavy socks. 

These boots are pretty versatile. So, you can easily wear them with the laces done up, or only half way up, with the tongue sticking out (and they won’t slip out because of the boot’s high ankle).

They also look wicked good with a pair of skinny jeans tucked into the boot or with your socks coming out of the boot and over your skinny jeans (they look awesome with leggings too). 

Definitely a fantastic pair of boots that will make you look and feel like a REAL New Yorker.

5. Official New York Yankees Hat

While I don’t wear a Yankee hat on the reg. (I wear a slightly more polished sunhat instead):

I have owned, worn, and loved one of these hats for a time.

I can absolutely confirm that yes, these hats are amazing and yes, they really are beloved by most NYers all across the city, minus the Mets fans (FYI: NYers refer to NYC as “the city”).

Sorry, but I consider the Yankees more of New York’s team since they’re more internationally known. Guess we can thank Jay-Z for making the Yankee hat an actual “fashion trend”.

And while there are a ton of different Yankees hats out there, this is the only official, Yankees hat that locals will wear, making this a perfect New York City gift idea for any New York lovers out there.

If you REALLY wanna look like a local and wear this hat correctly, then you CANNOT bend the brim and you must keep the sticker on.

Do this and New Yorkers will accept you as one of their own.

But seriously:

I’ve had one for years (not that I really wear it anymore) and it’s comfortable, stylish, durable, and even comes in a variety of colors.

Buying this hat online  is WAY cheaper than buying them at Yankee Stadium.

Feel free to get your NYC swagger on with an official Yankees hat like this.

6. Waterproof Boots

If you’re not in the mood to rock construction worker chic Tims throughout your entire vacay, then you’ll definitely need a pair of boots that are stylish, comfortable, and waterproof since NYC has been getting a lot of rain lately.

And waterproof is a must since you don’t want to get caught in one of those black hole size mud puddles that NYC is infamous for.

My pick for the perfect NYC boot is the UGG Simmens ! Seriously one of the most comfortable and stylish walking shoes that I’ve ever had the pleasure of wearing.

Not only are they cute AF, and mad comfortable to BOOT (get it), but they are waterproof and come with an awesome zipper that helps you quickly and easily remove them at airport security.

They have a wool insole to help keep your feet warm and a rubber sole bottom for added traction.

They’re perfect for almost any season in New York City, except maybe summer when it’s disgustingly hot and humid.

If you’re looking for a pair of boots that can withstand the wear and tear of NYC, but that will still look fab in the process, then these are the boots for you.

My precious…I mean, these boots run a small so I consider ordering a half size larger than you normally do.

7. Raincoat

Definitely check the weather before you leave for NYC because if it says no rain, then obviously there’s no need to pack a raincoat.

This is NYC, so I pinkie promise that you’ll be able to find anything and everything that you could EVER possibly want here.

If there is some sort of freak, Sharknado level crazy storm, just grab a cheap, plastic poncho from a street vendor and call it a day.

They’re like $5 and you can just throw it out when you’re done with it.

If it looks like a tsunami of rain is about to descend upon New York City, or if you visit during spring (March-May), then definitely pack a flattering raincoat that will keep you warm and dry.

And my fave?

The  Cole Haan packable raincoat!  Not only does it neatly and easily fold up into your suitcase, but it also has a removable hood (I love this because I think raincoats always look so much sleeker without a hood) and a charming belt, that when used, gives it a more customizable, feminine fit. P

I also love that the fabric is durable, comfortable, waterproof, and heavy enough to be worn throughout the spring and fall (just wear a sweater underneath during the fall so that you don’t get cold).

This jacket does run a bit small, especially in the back and arms, so try and order a size or two up if you think you might want to buy this jacket.

8.  Lipstick-Sized Portable Charger

Raise your hand if you carry electronics with you on vacation?

(This girl’s hand shoots straight up and almost pokes someone’s eye out)

Yup, just like the rest of my self-indulgent generation, I too am a tech-dependent Millennial who would probably fall down a well or get eaten by a rogue shark if I didn’t have my GPS with me at all times.

It’s beyond imperative that I keep my phone fully charged and ready to go 24/7.

If the battery on my phone actually does die, it’s like a Defcon 5 national emergency.

But Never Fear:

That’s where this pint-sized portable of wonder charger comes in.

Feel free to oh and ah at all (kidding).

So take a deep calming breath, namaste it up, and chillax because this gadget will recharge multiple devices and save you a trip back to your hotel.

The best part though?

This charger is so small that it easily fits inside your makeup bag, leaving space for super important things like that Harry Potter wand that you just HAD to buy

I get it. The Muggle struggle is real (if you hate Harry Potter just ignore this).

9. Electronics with an International Adaptor

Since appliances in the United States run on 110v of electricity and electrical outlets are shaped differently than the rest of the world, anyone living outside of North America (and most of you are not) will need a dual adaptor and current converter when using electronics in New York City.

Don’t get me wrong:

Most laptops, cellphones, and cameras should be totally fine, but many hair dryers, curling irons, and hair straighteners won’t be since they don’t support multiple voltages.

Just to be certain though:

Double check the tag on any appliances and make sure that it explicitly states that the appliance is dual voltage. If it does then you can safely use it in the US without a currency converter.

Obviously, you’ll want to bring your smartphone too, if it isn’t already permanently attached to your hand.

Try and purchase  a sim card  for your unlocked phone prior to your visit so that you don’t get hit with a ton of data overages while using the internet to navigate the not so mean streets of NYC.

Don’t forget to pack a decent pair of headphones, which is the socially acceptable way to ignore people who try and talk to you. Three cheers for social isolation!

I love a good pair of noise-canceling headphones since they drown out all the ambient noise and let me watch my movie/listen to my music in peace.

But any pair of headphones will do. It just depends on your budget. 

Some other electronics that you might want to pack include a tablet with a keyboard, a lightweight laptop, and an e-reader, like a  Kindle . 

Just make sure that you choose wisely and don’t overpack!

10. Camera Gear

While I wouldn’t exactly call NYC picturesque (just look at the garbage heaps and the rats the size of cats), there are a ton of beautiful parks and iconic landmarks that you’ill want to take pictures of.

Unless you want to draw everything by hand, you’ll clearly need camera gear of some sort to commemorate your trip.

I’m not a huge fan of selfie sticks (aka Millennial wands of self-indulgence) since I feel like a total tool when I use them.

As a die-hard solo traveler, with no Instagram husband to speak of, I suck it up, force my eyelids open even before the sun dares come up, and drag one of my favorite travel tripods around with me wherever I go. 

It’s 110% as un-fun as it sounds, but totally worth it once you get a bunch of amazing pictures that make you feel like a slight Instagram baller.

If you still want to use a selfie stick, that’s totally cool. No judgment here. I just don’t like it for me.

Just know that in most major cities, a selfie stick is the hallmark of a naive and unsuspecting tourist.

And speaking of tourist (terrible segway I know):

There are a few other photography essentials that you might want to add to your NYC packing list.

You know, things like spare batteries, spare memory cards, any type of lens you may need, a UV filter, and a great camera bag to store all this expensive gear.

My personal fave just happens to be any of the amazing bags over at GATTA.since they are the highest quality and most stylish camera bags that I’ve everowned.

They’re a bit on the pricey side, but totally worth the investment in my humble opinion.

Because trust me:

I’ve had camera bags break on me, mid-trip and it’s never fun and always anxiety inducing since you’re constantly wondering if today is the day when your camera will finally be destroyed.

I happen to love the Rosewood Camille (above) and the Chloe Noir (smaller, chic, and black).

Both of these camera bags are stylish on the outside, with a fabulous, felt like interior and an adjustable divider that creates a customizable fit to cushion your camera and help protect it from damage.

PSST: Pack extra Ziploc bags to put your wet clothes in or to keep your electronics dry.

11. Collapsible Water Bottle (This item will save you a ton of money on bottled water while visiting NYC)

A collapsible water bottle will never be the sexiest or most exciting item on any travel packing list.

When you visit New York City and begin to realize that a single bottle of water can cost upwards of $3, this reusable water bottle starts to get a whole lot sexier.

Not only does it help you save money on drinks, but it also protects the environment by reducing your overall plastic consumption.

Added bonus?

Ultra-left wing hippies will also stop throwing titanic levels of shade your way as you guzzle down your filthy, mass-produced, environment destroying diet coke (all a joke since I LOVE diet coke).

But why buy THIS water bottle?

Well, it’s a nifty,  collapsible water bottle  that will take up little to no space in your bag when you’re not using it to carry water.

No more bulky water bottles that seem to take up way too much room in your bag.

Just deflate this water bottle, roll it up, and, BAM, you now have a ton of space for other, nifty travel essentials.

Just take the handle strap, pass it under the rolled up water bottle, and then hook the strap to the plastic ring that attaches the strap to the water bottle

And that’s it. Poof, you are now an NYC packing pro.

12. Stylish Walking Shoes

Since New York City is the largest city in the United States, and the ninth largest city in the world (thanks Google), clearly you’ll need to do some walking, even if you take the subway everywhere.

Comfortable but stylish, walking shoes are the key to any outfit when figuring out what to wear in NYC.

And if you do get new shoes, be sure to break them in BEFORE, and not during your trip to New York City.

Because honestly:

I don’t know too many people who go around saying, “Oh gee, I just love blisters and watching my heels bleed from the discomfort of my shoes,”

That’s why: 

You need to treat yo’self and check out the  Steve Madden Women’s Gills Fashion Shoe .

Truthfully though:

I was a bit nervous about buying these shoes since I didn’t think I would like them.

I had previously purchased a pair of  quilted, Steve Madden slip-on sneakers , and they were exactly what I wanted.

They were stylish, comfortable like traditional sneakers, and really easy to slip on and off, which was perfect for the sirport.

Except for one tiny problem…they gave me horrible blisters until I broke them in.

When I finally got these shoes, I wasn’t 100% certain that they would be comfortable.

I diligently researched these shoes before I bought them and ordered a size larger than normal as a preemptive strike against any potential blisters; something that probably wasn’t entirely necessary since the heel has extra padding and is also a bit rounded to prevent blisters.

I’m delighted to report that these shoes are comfortable, last a LONG time, look good with almost any outfit (just be sure to buy a neutral color shoe ) and are easy to put on and take off.

My love for all things Steve Madden has been fully restored! HOORAY!

***Remember to put on no-show socks if you wear these to the airport. Because nobody wants to step on the airport floor in their bare feet. That’s just gross.***

13. Faux Leather Jacket (The perfect addition to any NYC Packing List)

I definitely wouldn’t wear this jacket in the dead of winter when the polar vortex is in town and there’s three feet of snow on the ground.

If you’re looking for a fashionable jacket that will keep you warm and toasty on a cool spring day, then this  Lock and Love Quilted Faux Leather Jacket  is where it’s at. 

Not only does this tailored, faux leather jacket make you look super chic, but it’s also incredibly durable, and made with high-quality stitching that makes it last for what feels like forever.

It’s also black, which is great since New Yorkers will forever love the slimming beauty and power of this magnificent color.

FYI though:

I’m a vegetarian. So, I won’t be wearing real animal products any time soon, which is yet another reason why I adore this imitation leather jacket.

The faux leather used to make this jacket is incredibly high-quality, which is why it actually looks and feels like real leather, and not like a glorified potato sack.

It also comes in pretty much any color you can dream up which is always a bonus.

Be forewarned though:

This company does not do returns. Therefore, if you purchase this jacket, carefully read the reviews and select the size that’s best for you

This jacket is meant to be a form-fitting jacket, but not so form-fitting that you faint due to a lack of oxygen.

I would order a jacket that is two sizes larger than your normal size since it’s better to have a jacket that is too big than too small.

14. Chunky Knit Sweater

Chunky knit sweaters are another one of my not-so-low-key clothing obsessions.

They are even more awesome if you’re traveling to New York City during the summer.

Why, you may rightly wonder, since NYC is disgustingly hot and humid from June through August?

While it may be hot outside, inside of every building in NYC, the AC will be cranked up to sub-Artic temperatures.

Fail to pack something warm during the summer and you’ll spend your entire trip to NYC feeling like you’re about to freeze to death.

And let’s be honest:

If you’re gonna pack something warm to wear anyway, might as well make it something that’s WAY nicer than that grody old sweatshirt of yours with the unintentional thumb holes.

A chunky knit sweater is just a great go-to travel item if the weather suddenly changes and you need something to keep you warm.

You could even MacGyver it up and use your chunky knit sweater as a blanket or a pillow during a long flight.

I love this  sweater from MEROKEETY  since it’s soft, comfy, and drapes over you nicely and not in a living room curtain kind of way (but it doesn’t have any closures which is kind of annoying). 

It fits well, falls just above the knee, has deep pockets for added storage, and a flattering v neck that will make you feel like you’re the reincarnation of Jennifer Aniston.

The stitching is a bit odd and gives it an almost terry cloth look which I am not a fan of.

It also isn’t made for frigid weather.

Therefore, don’t go out in the middle of the winter wearing this, and only this, you know, like one of Jack’s French girls (Get the Titanic reference? No? Right…awkward).

15. Little Black Dress 

When trying to figure out what to wear in New York City:

A women’s travel dresse is always an ABSOLUTE must!

Not only are they easy to pack, but they always make you look and feel AMAZING (like you tried to look good without actually doing anything).

This dress happens to be a  Boatneck Sleeveless Vintage Tea Dress  from one of my favorite designers on Amazon, Grace Karin.

I love their dresses (I have a dress with a short sleeve black top and a white bottom with lemons that I get a ton of compliments on) since they’re high-quality, last forever, true to size, come in any pattern/color imaginable, are reasonably priced at $30 a dress, and hide any bodily imperfections with the help of a pair of   Spanx .

This dress is made of some mystery, magic material that is wrinkle resistant, which is essential for me since I don’t think I’ve ever used an iron in my life.

Just a truly timeless look that might even make someone like Grace Kelly go a bit weak in the knees.

Also, a fantastic piece if you’re planning a fab night out in NYC and want to dress up a bit for a Broadway show (FYI: You can dress up for a Broadway show if you like but you definitely don’t have to. No joke, you could literally wear sweatpants and no one would care. Also, before you purchase Broadway tickets, find out how to get them for half price! )

16. Tide to Go

Since I am a total, un-hot travel mess:

Tide to Go is a total MUST since I’m always spilling something all over myself.

While I can’t save myself from acute spillage of the least attractive kind, I can do a little incognito damage control by whipping out this little cleaning wand of wonder to dab away any evidence of my incredibly un-dainty ways.

I’m a glorified walking disaster, but that doesn’t mean I wanna look like a bag lady while walking down the ever-posh streets of Manhattan.

That’s why I stick with this little miracle and pray for deliverance from my accident-prone ways.

And while we’re at it, add some Advil to your NYC packing list too.

There’s nothing worse than having a pounding headache from a debaucherous night before, with no relief in sight (except maybe a $10, mini-bottle of Advil that you’ll find at the airport).

17. Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is probably THE single most boring thing on the planet to talk about…except when you have a medical emergency and it saves you from a lifetime of debt to a foreign country.

In that instant:

We all want to profess our undying love for travel insurance and tell ignorant travelers about the beauty, wonder, and awe of this modern day mircale.

Or maybe that’s just me.

Hey, all I know is that when the proverbial doo doo (only pretend I said something far more severe) hits the fan, I never regret my decision to play it safe and purchase awesome travel insurance.

But I’ve been there.

I too have been tempted to save a few dollars (or yen, pounds, pesos, euros, etc.) by skipping the travel insurance.

As you get old, wise, and infirmed, you, and your dwindling bank account, quickly see the error of your ways.

So moral of this parent size lecture?

Always get travel insurance, even if it’s not from the company I recommend (COUGH… WORLD NOMADS TRAVEL INSURANCE  IS THE BEST). 

Why, you may wonder?

Well, as a veritable maven of travel mishaps, I’m the type of person who would trip over an escaped tiger and plummet down the side of a cliff, and end up in a full body cast, after a leisurely stroll through the woods. 

And while you probably aren’t an accident-prone disaster like me, you also probably aren’t a psychic who can predict exactly when you’ll need travel insurance.

That’s why you just need to suck it up, put your big girl panties on, and add travel insurance to your NYC packing list.

But what is the best travel insurance out there?

18. Inflatable Neck Pillow

I HATE sleeping on planes. It is literally the worst thing ever. 

I sit there, wide awake, plagued by a perpetual case of insomnia while everyone else is in a blissful slumber, quietly dreaming about our final destination. 

The only thing that makes the entire ordeal even slightly bareable is a neck pillow.

And my pillow of choice is the  inflatable daydreamer neck pillow.

Not only does it give me the neck support that I need to sleep on a plane, but it’s also easy to pack since it occupies a fraction of the space that a normal neck pillow does.

I just deflate it, roll it up, place it in my carry on, and marvel at the space I have for all of my other carry on essentials .

It even has a velvety soft exterior and a built-in air pump for easy inflation.

This little sleep-inducing marvel will help you get the rest you need while taking up minimal real estate in your carry on.

19.  Toiletries

Discussing the finer points of toiletry packing doesn’t exactly make me tingle all over and want to frolic around in jubilee.

I also don’t want to have rats swooning at my feet because I smell like a trash heap while strolling through the streets of NYC.

We should probably discuss toiletries, at least briefly, so that you don’t forget anything ultra-important, like a toothbrush. 

But let’s be real:

You’ll need the same essentials that you would for any other trip around the globe.

Things like a brush, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, deodorant, moisturiser, contact lens solution (if you wear contacts), medication, and any makeup or sanitary products that you can dream up.

If you do have a momentary memory lapse and forget something uber-important, no need for a post-apocalyptic meltdown since NYC has anything you could ever want.

In terms of toiletry bags, I usually just throw all my stuff in a ziplock bag and call it a day since I’m not super glam.

I recently decided to try and be a bit more organized and discovered this fantastic toiletry bag.

Not only does it come with a durable hanging hook that makes everything 10,000 times easier to find, but it also has a sturdy zipper, a breathable mesh pouch, a sturdy handle, and is big enough to hold almost every toiletry imaginable. 

It only costs $16 which is pretty perfect since no one wants to spend a year’s salary on a bag that will only ever sit inside their bathroom or luggage.

***Remember to pack sunscreen in the summer and chapstick in the winter so that your lips don’t shrivel up like the Sahara desert.***

20. A Nice Top

The good thing about NYC is that you can wear pretty much anything and it’s totally okay.

Walk around with a bright, purple mohawk and no one will even look twice.

Rock a huge backpack, an I love NY shirt, white velcro sneakers, and a straw hat, all while carrying a selfie-stick and we’ll all know that you’re a tourist.

Dress to fit the vibe of NYC which is gritty, fast, and exciting. That’s why, I would rock something slightly edgy.

You don’t have to wear anything that has nipple holes and requires pasties, but something with a little extra spark that is still neutral enough to be worn with a jacket or a colorful scarf.

That’s why I love this top.

The unique design of the shoulder gives it a little extra something, but it’s also neutral enough to be worn with some awesome jewelry or a retro-chic jacket.

It’s super soft and loose enough to hide all of your wobbly bits, which I for one am a huge fan of.

And I mean really:

21. The Perfect Carry On Bag to Put Everything in!

I have now had this bag for well over three years:

And besides some minor wear and tear, it’s still in great condition.

Not only is it 100% fully functional, but this bag has also survived my recent foray into digital nomad life for the past three months.

This really is the ONLY piece of luggage that I travel with, besides my day bag. So, you can just imagine how much  this bag has gone through.

One word of caution though:

Yeah, some are actually bigger than others. That’s why:

If you are planning to do carry on only travel only to NYC, then definitely opt for the larger of the two bags.

***HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM! Because while this guide on what to wear in NYC may be super useful, there are also a few things that you do NOT want topack for your trip to NYC. You know things like heavy books (that’s what your kindle is for), everything you own, an I Love NY T-Shirt, a drone (they’re basically banned throughout NYC), super uncomfortable shoes (trust me, you’ll be doing more walking than you EVER thought possible), and anything uber-valuable that might get lost, stolen or damaged.***

22. A Scarf (Pack a light scarf for the summer and a heavy scarf for the winter)

Scarves are probably one of the best travel clothes for women EVER! I mean:

Not only are they small and incredibly easy to pack, but they keep you cool in the sun and warm on a chilly day.

They can give your outfit that perfect pop of color or add a bit of modesty if you’re entering a church like St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

And added bonus?

They never EVER make you feel fat!

If only all clothes were as delightfully wonderful as scarves.

And unlike hats:

Scarves don’t blow away in the wind, are easy to carry, and won’t get ruined if they get squished inside your bag. 

And this scarf? Yeah, it’s kind of sort of special.

Not only is it incredibly light-weight (well ventilated in the summer and warm in the winter), and available in a ton of fantastic colors, but it’s also elegant and long enough to be worn as a scarf, sarong, or headwrap; making this scarf a true carry on essential for any minimalist packer who doesn’t want to overpack!

23. Sunglasses (Perfect for the WINTER and SUMMER)

Whether you’re visiting New York City during the winter or summer: No New York City packing list would be complete without a chic pair of sunglasses to help you channel your inner Audrey Hepburn from Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Because I don’t know about you but:

Nothing makes me look like a self-important, wannabe celebrity faster than a nifty pair of retro, polarized, black sunglasses.

I’m joking though because sunglasses really are the best.

Not only do they protect my light eyes from harmful UV rays, but they also make me look infinitely cooler than I actually am.

Aside from their amazing protective capabilities, sunglasses also expertly hide the luggage-size bags under my eyes that are the  not-so-lovely reminants of a night of debaucherous fun at one of NYC’s many epic, rooftop bars .

24. Shorts or a Skirt for the Summer

While I do love a nice skirt ( this one is particulialry amazing since I’ve gotten about a million compliments on it): I tend to forget that I’m a lady and inadvertantly sit with my legs wide open at the most awkward of time. WHOOPS.

When deciding what to wear in New York City for the summer, I usually prefer a nice pair of shorts to a skirt any day.

And there really is nothing more classic, and comfortable, than a nice pair of Levi jean shorts.

Not only are they the perfect length:

But they also come in a variety of washes that are sure to satisfy a bunch of different personal styles.

 Added bonus?

They even come with this uber-comfortable, elastic waistband that makes them incredibly comfortable to wear, even after an impromptu, self-guided food tour through NYC .

Because yes, these shorts really are pajama level comfortable.

Plus, they’re even better than your typical jeggings since they have a built-in, control top waist that makes any potential muffin tops a thing of the past.

Hip hip hooray!

And unlike normal jeans, these shorts have a medium rise that sucks in your pouch but still gives you enough room to move around comfortably. 

And while they are incredibly strecthy:

They’re also made of a real, jean material and not some cheap AF jegging that everyone knows is fake.

Just an overall great pair of comfortable travel shorts that will cost you a mere $20!

Because let’s keep in NYC level real, who doesn’t love saving money?

25. A Microfiber Towel

Who doesn’t want to picnic it up in one of NYC’s many fantastic green spaces?

Not only is it a great way to save money, but it’s also a fantastic way to experience NYC just like a local.

No one wants to worry about grass stains all over their butt after enjoying a nice picnic lunch in NYC’s immortal Central Park.

And that’s where this handy, microfiber towel comes in.

Not only is this towel enormous, but the microfiber practically dries instantly.

If you’re a super fancy person who books a hotel in NYC with a pool (or if you end up staying at a hostel that charges you to rent a towel), then you can easily use this towel to dry yourself off and still pack it up while its damp since you don;t have to worry about a thin layer of mold forming along the exterior.

A first aid kit is kind of the same thing. Sure, it isn’t the sexiest thing on this list, but it’s super helpful when you are… trapped down a well (where’s Lassie)!

Just Kidding!

It’s infinitely more likely that you’ll get a blister or scrap your knee while biking through Central Park.

So, we’re  not talking Grey’s Anatomy level serious stuff here.

But a travel must have none the less because even though you probably won’t use your first aid kit, it’s still nice to have it if whoops, you accidently cut yourself while shaving.

Give this super nifty, super compact  first aid kit a try since I love it and use it on all my trips.

What to Wear in NYC: Winter Packing List

The winter season in New York City is cold, with daily highs of 44 degrees (on a good day) and lows of 25 degrees, between the months of December and February.

Also be aware of the fact that:

NYC can be quite wet during this time of year, with eight days out of every month typically receiving rain or snow.

That is only a guideline. Do yourself a favor and ALWAYS check the weather forecast before you arrive.

Not only can the weather be warmer than you think (one Christmas it was 70!), but you also don’t want to pack knee-high snow boots if you don’t have to; which is exactly what you’ll need on a snowy day in NYC since the slush puddles here are MASSIVE.

Travel to New York City during the summer and air-conditioning will be your new best friend since NYC is notoriously hot, humid, and disgusting throughout the summer.

Throw in huge crowds and high, peak-season prices and you’ll understand why summer is my least favorite time of year to visit NYC.

Pack light clothing, in colors that repel the sun (like white), as well as sunscreen and a sunhat since average highs are 85 degrees and average lows, are 68 degrees between the months of June and August.

***Also pack a heavy sweatshirt or sweater since every indoor space in NYC cranks up the AC to temperatures that are beyond frigid.***

If you are wondering what to wear in NYC in summer and are worried about the cold, don’t be. Summers in NYC are generally hot and humid. You don’t really need a jacket. The evenings however can bring in a bit of a chill. That’s probably the only time you will need one. Then too, just a jacket will suffice.

What To Wear in NYC In The Summer

Heading to New York City this summer and wondering what to wear? Yeah — we get this question (or questions about various cities like this) all the time. And frankly, whether you’re headed to any big city on the East Coast (NYC, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C.) or even across the pond (Paris, perhaps?), you’re likely going to be dealing with the same kinds of issues: hot city sidewalks radiating heat and even-hotter subway cars.

While I’ve had a cold-weather uniform at the ready for years now, it’s taken me a bit of time to navigate through all of the, uh, unique challenges that summer travel has to offer. Not only do you have to contend with said heat (and again, there’s nothing hotter than some of NYC’s subway platforms), but I’ve noticed that cockroaches tend to come out in full force in the summer months, as does dirt, which has made sandal wearing…not ideal.

And yup, I learned that the hard way.

Traveling To NYC? My Summer Outfit Formula Is A Game-Changer

OK. So, given the long list of things to consider — high heat, intense sun, walkable footwear, cockroaches, dirtier-than-usual subways — my go-to formula for traveling to NYC in the summer centers around one key piece: a really special dress in a natural, lightweight fabric (cotton poplin or linen is best) in a dark color, with interesting design details. This type of dress is durable and hides all manner of dirt, yet it’s breezy and can still be wildly exciting to wear.

And with the amount of walking/dirt/cockroaches in New York City (or similar cities)…I’m always going to recommend sneakers over sandals .

Bottom line? If you’re exploring the big city, why not wear something practical and fabulous? Really, I always do want both.

Hero Piece: A Breezy Black Midi Dress — Yes, Even In Summer

A black (or other dark-colored) dress can be hotter in the sun, but the advantage is that it also hides dirt (or spilled iced coffee) better too. So, I can easily ride the train, sit on park benches, go in & out of subways, eat at a food cart…and still look put-together enough for the MOMA or a chic, little NYC rooftop.

The key is finding a dress that’s also a bit of a statement piece (midi length or longer), with glamorous design details (off-the-shoulder, cutouts) and an overall breezy silhouette to contend with the heat (bonus points for a leg slit).

48 Hours In NYC: Putting The Dress To The Test

A few weeks ago, Mike had a work event in New York, so we took the train up to the city. I packed only my black Staud dress and sneakers (as well as my event outfit) for this quick trip. It was one of those 90-degree weekends, and this outfit turned out to be pretty darn perfect. I was as cool and comfortable as could reasonably be expected, and I appreciated that this dress was decidedly NOT precious…yet still felt glamorous and pretty.

We stayed at the Ink48 Hotel , which has one of the most amazing rooftop bars. Highly recommend. A little shoutout to Sullivan St. Bakery too. I planned on splitting a few things with Mike and then…ate them myself. So.

And if you haven’t yet seen the new Penn Station… WOW . Thanks to COVID, we hadn’t been to NY in quite some time, so stepping out into the gorgeously renovated train station felt a little like stepping into Oz.

Before you figure out what to wear in New York… some insider tips about what to pack for NYC

You’ll be walking a lot more than you would at home, so bring a good pair of sneakers , boots , or flats that you can walk miles in.  Heels, as lovely as they are, are a mistake unless you’re used to wearing them regularly for hours.

People wear a lot of black. There’s nothing wrong with other colors, but the stereotype is just a little true.  That said, feel free to wear whatever you want.  Fashion in New York is famous for a reason, so enjoy it.

We have some of the best shopping in the United States, so if you conveniently forget to bring something, I promise that you’ll be able to find it here!

New York has real seasons, so it’s NYC is cold in winter, ridiculously humid in summer, and kind of perfect in September/April.  As a result, I recommend checking carefully what the weather is in New York City when you’ll be here.  (Don’t worry, you’ll find this out here!)

You don’t need a special outfit everyday, so definitely look up the idea of a capsule wardrobe if you want to minimize packing for New York City (e.g. everything can be mixed/matched/reworn).

If you have plans to go out in New York, you’ll want to wear a nice dress or a nice suit as people get dressed up to go out at nicer bars and/or clubs. You may get rejected at the entrance if you’re not dressed sharp enough. (This is the one time where heels can be an asset!)

There’s no single dress code in New York City. You can dress however you like, whether you want to go classic chic, punk, or girly.  Street harassment is an issue for women in New York City, but don’t let this deter you from wearing what you want.

Pickpocketing is not really a thing in New York, but don’t leave your valuables unattended unless you want someone to take them.  In general, I usually bring my backpack/purse with me if I go to the bathroom although I’ve definitely asked people to watch my stuff for a moment. I swear we’re good people at heart.

Similarly, if someone wants to rob you, you will  know, so be aware of where you are as New York has violent crime (including muggings), although tourists are not typically the target.  In general, if you’re held up, don’t fight back.

However, I want to mention: New York is generally safe, but you need to use common sense.  A money-belt won’t do much as I’ve never met anyone who was pickpocketed, so don’t waste your money on one.

What to pack for New York  ​no matter the season

Your camera and its charger. A good DSLR makes a huge difference for taking good photos although phones are catching up steadily! (If you forget it, there’s plenty of places to buy a camera or a charger too.)

I use the Nikon D3300 , which I’ve had for some years now. It’s one of the better low-end DSLRs and I absolutely love the photo quality.  If you’re more into photos, consider purchasing camera with a wide angle lens.

An umbrella . It’s best not to get caught in the rain, so bring your own umbrella with you, so you don’t end up buying ugly plastic ponchos like many tourists do.  Luckily, there are typically many awnings to duck underneath!

Plug & Converter. If you’re coming from anywhere but North America or Japan, you need the right plug for the US .  In America, we use the two pronged American outlet, however if you’re bringing heavy-duty hardware (like your laptop or hair straightener), it’s good to have a converter to ensure that you don’t fry your electronics.

I recently bought a new adapter for my travels (as many of my electronics are European at this point) and I love having two USB ports for my phone and other electronics to charge simultaneously with my computer.

Phone charger and a battery bank for your phone.  You’re probably planning to be sharing videos/photos and using your phone for google maps.  Don’t forget your charger as using data, location data, and finding wifi can burn through your phone battery.

Medicines. Getting replacements for your drugs might be a bit tricky without a doctor’s note, so pack your medicines carefully!  Doctors in the United States, especially New York, are significantly more expensive than elsewhere, so make sure you pack what you need.

Toiletries. There’s a RiteAid or Walgreen’s basically everywhere, so don’t worry if you forget something, but prices in New York are higher than most cities in the United States.

A guidebook to New York City is a good idea. I always depend on the Lonely Planet guides although for New York, consider getting a book that also shows you the less touristy side to New York. (If you want to save money, you can read my insider tips for New York City for free!)

Your pajamas of course.  

Socks and underwear. (I just love these Japanese inspired socks !)  In general, a pair per day is a good general idea although one spare is good in case your shoes get wet.

A folding reusable bag. You seriously never know when you’ll need to carry a new souvenir, your lunch, or something back to your hotel. Instead of collecting plastic bags, bring your  reusable folding bag !

What to wear in New York City in winter for 1 week

I’ll assume here that you’re figuring what to pack for New York in December, which is when New York fills up for the most magical time of the year. ( Click for tips for the holiday season in NYC !) This is a packing list for a week in New York City during winter.

Quick summary of what to pack for winter in New York City:

• Winter jacket
• 1-2 pairs of pants
• One formal outfit for going out
• Long-sleeve shirts
• One sweater
• Electronics

December in New York is cold. The temperature in New York in December is around 4 degrees Celsius or 39 degrees Fahrenheit.

There can be snow in late November, December, and January, however most days will not be snowing. Still, you want to dress warmly as the wind chill can make it feel colder than it is!

You’ll need to pack a warm jacket for winter in New York City. It gets cold and you should dress appropriately. Ever since we got back from Iceland, I’ve been low-key obsessed with my 3-in-1 jacket since it allows you to unzip it into a normal sweatshirt once you’re indoors.

In general,  a good wool peacoat is fine as long as you layer up properly with at least 1-2 layers underneath. I usually swear a sweater and a t-shirt underneath my peacoats, which work well enough for winter!

1-2 pairs of jeans or pants that keep you toasty! You don’t need to wear snow pants as the snow is mostly out of the way (besides the dirty snow next to the curb).

(New York is good at taking care of the snow most of the time.)  I’m not that prone to getting cold, however, a lined pair of jeans might be good if you’re not used to the snow.

I recommend bringing a good pair of thermal tights if you’re intent on wearing a dress or skirt .  As mentioned before, it’s not that cold and you should be fine wearing a dress if you wear thermal tights.

A good hat.   You’ll be outside walking a lot and it’s good to be warm. I find a fleece-lined hat extra toasty.  If you forget your hat, there’s plenty of places to buy a new one!

A scarf . The wind-chill can be a bit much, so it feels good to hide your neck/face in a cozy scarf!  I really love having a circle scarf as I find that it’s more comfortable to wear it and it’s harder to lose…

Riding boots or comfy booties for the ladies. Given how much you’ll be walking and how one step into a dirty snow pile can leave your sneakers soaking wet, I recommend packing some higher boots (or just knee high boots) as they allow you to layer up with some warm socks.  Recently, over the knee boots have become a trend and I imagine that this is perfect for winter in New York!

If you’re prone to getting cold, you can tuck your jeans into them, and you don’t need to worry about stepping in the wrong puddle. My opinion is that riding boots or booties make so many outfits chic without trying.

For men, an ankle boot works well as it’s both comfy and practical.

One nice formal outfit and nicer pair of shoes for a formal dinner out (or going out to a nicer club/bar). For women, a black cocktail dress is always a safe bet. If you’re not really someone who dresses up much, there are plenty of bars and cafes that don’t have a dress code.

Many of New York’s most exclusive clubs and nightclubs have a stricter dress code where what you wear does make a different on whether you’ll get in.  I personally prefer beer bars and I often wear a winter dress with long-sleeves or a sweater on top of one of my thicker dresses with tights.

5 long-sleeve shirts  to wear underneath your clothes.  I’m a huge fan of layering and I find that a basic cotton long-sleeve shirt is a great basic. You don’t need anything crazy, so I typically buy mine in bulk. I also find that they look great tucked into jeans or a nice skirt.

1 sweater that can be used for layering.  I generally prefer sweaters that button as it makes it easier to wear without being so warm, especially if you have a day where you’re going inside and outside.

Gloves that allow you to use your phone .  When it’s cold out, there’s something so nice about not needing to take off your phone to check something on your phone. 

What to wear in New York City in summer for one week

Quick summary of what to pack for summer in New York City:

• Light jacket
• Comfy airy shoes (sandals/flats)
• For women: 1-2 shorts/skirts
• For women : 2 dresses.
• 3+ shirts. (You don’t realize how sweaty you’ll get!)
• One formal outfit 
• Towel if you plan to picnic.
• Refillable water bottle
• Deodorant 

In the summer, most places keep the AC turned up as the humidity in New York is brutal, so if you get cold easily, you’ll want to pack an extra layer to wear in New York City in the summer….indoors.

A light jacket

I recommend packing a zip-up hoodie or a very light zipped jacket for New York City in summer.  I usually wear a fake-leather jacket on cooler days myself as I feel cool in it.  A light sweater also works!

Comfortable shoes

Comfy shoes are a necessity. Due to the heat and horrible humidity, you’ll want to bring comfy sandals , something open-toed, or flats if you’re not a fan of sandals. If you wear sneakers with socks, you’ll be melting. Break in your shoes first.

Shorts or a skirt

1-2 pairs of shorts or skirts t hat match multiple outfits It’s going to be very hot in New York City in summer, so if you’re wondering what to wear in New York City in summer, be sure to pack at least one pair of shorts.

I find a basic black pair of shorts is an easy/chic item for pack for New York City summers although a breezy A-line skirt also looks chic while keeping you cool.

Dresses for feminine ladies

Ladies: 2 cute dresses . There’s nothing like the humidity in New York in summer and my favorite remedy is to pack a basic cute comfy dress (or three).

The humidity makes you really want to have a breeze, which is why I prefer a loose floral dress that looks good all day/night or a chic vintage inspired dress to wear for summer in New York City. You’d be surprised how colorfully people dress in summer.

A towel or blanket

A towel or picnic blanket or sheet (or borrow one from your hotel). One of the best things to do in New York City summer is to go picnicking in Central Park. Bring something to sit on, maybe bring a wine opener (put it in your suitcase), and enjoy Central Park in summer.

A refillable water bottle

A refillable water bottle . You’ll be drinking a lot of water because New York City in summer is HOT and it’s better for the environment to not keep buying plastic bottles. The tap water in New York is fine, so fill it up from the tap before you leave the house. The water foundations are fine.

A nicer dress for going out

A nice formal outfit for going out. For ladies, a cute outfit or a chic cocktail dress should do the trick. Rooftop bars are the thing in summer and many expect you to dress up properly to go there at night. Maybe some espadrilles to go with it.

Sunglasses since it will be sunny and you want to be able to see!

Strong deodorant

A strong deodorant.  Don’t underestimate the humidity and the heat.  Although air conditioning is good inside… you’ll be thankful for it when you’re riding a crowded subway (which is air conditioned).

What to wear in New York City in fall or spring

Depending on WHEN in fall you’re visiting, I consider spring/fall in New York City to be fairly similar for packing.  Check the weather as it might be colder than you expect.

Quick summary of what to pack for spring or fall in New York City for one week.

• Peacoat/Light jacket
• Comfy shoes (Boots)
• 1-2 dresses.
• 3+ shirts (mix of long-sleeve and short-sleeve depending on weather).
• 1-2 pairs of Jeans
• Hat, scarf, and gloves depending on weather (at minimum a hat).

I have jackets for every season. My fall and spring jacket for New York City is a medium weight wool peacoat  that I can fit a sweater underneath for winter. Although some people would wear a peacoat year-round, I typically save my peacoat for fall from October onwards or before April.

You can always wear an open peacoat in September or April (shoulder season) if you’re concerned about packing too many clothes for New York.  I sometimes find that this can be  too warm.

When it’s less chilly, I often wear a light jacket around New York City (sometimes a light bomber style jacket or a cloth jacket that zippers ). I’m not that prone to getting cold, but this works well for March/April shoulder season in New York City.

1-2 pairs of jeans. Luckily, jeans don’t get too dirty after one day of wear and they’re perfect for when there’s a slight chill in the air, but you want a jacket.  You don’t need to plan to pack a lot for spring in New York City.

A mix of short-sleeve and long-sleeve t-shirts.  New York City is colder towards the end of fall and early spring than a lot of people realize.   I recommend bringing maybe 2 of each depending on how cold you get and the weather then.  You can always layer with a sweater underneath your jacket.

A hat, a light scarf, and gloves depending on how chilly it will be. A hat is always a good idea to pack for fall in New York as the wind chill can get to you.

Sweater or cardigan to put on indoors if you get cold. Although it’s not that cold outside, I usually wear sleeveless/short-sleeve things underneath my jackets, so I always try to bring a cardigan or sweater with me.

It’s also nice for those surprisingly warm days where you don’t want to wear your peacoat, but it’s not warm enough to only wear your t-shirt. Consider packing one light sweater for New York City if you’re bringing only a heavier peacoat with you.

1-2 long-sleeve dresses for a nice night out or just a comfy sightseeing outfit layered with tights and boots.

Riding boots or booties . I find boots both warm and practical to wear in spring or fall in New York City. Just make sure that you break them in before you go.

A nice formal outfit for going out in New York. For ladies, a fashionable outfit or a chic cocktail dress should do the trick. Rooftop bars are big year-round. Maybe pair it with heeled booties and tights.

What not to pack for New York City

All your books.  New York has some fantastic bookstores with  new books  for  used book  prices.

Your entire wardrobe.  A lot of people, including myself, do this thing where they plan one outfit for every single day–and one even for a random occasion (when you get invited to Beyonce’s birthday party).

99% of the time you’ll never use these random articles of clothing that you brought with you to New York City  because , so pack light and plan to buy some awesome stuff in New York City.  

Everything that you don’t pack for New York means more clothes that you get to buy on sale. I’d even recommend on buying a second suitcase if you plan on shopping a lot.

A backpack.  It’s a bit annoying getting on the crowded subway with a backpack when you’re banging into people with your backpack.  Please make sure you’re not taking up a seat with it either.

Your drone. Drones are 100% banned in NYC and unless you want to meet New York’s Finest, leave it at home.

All your makeup.  MAC as well as Sephora exists, so you can even head there before a night out for sampling some new products (or just picking up a new lipstick).  Similarly, many women’s department stores ( think Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Sak’s Fifth Avenue ) offer a free makeover although there will be sales pressure at the end.

In case you forget to pack something for New York…

• Toiletries/Basic Electronics : RiteAid or Walgreen’s
• Clothing/Shoes : Macy’s, Century21, UNIQLO,  TJMaxx, Bloomingdale’s (high-end)
• Camera Gear : B&H Photo.

Hi Suzy, May is already usually getting a bit into summer, so you might want to consider having some flats with jeans and whatever spring colors of your choice along with a jacket/sweater. It’s New York, so wear what colors you wish, but maybe bring a pair of warmer shoes in case you end up cold as it can drop at night. Have a great trip. 🙂 Best, Karen

Hi Lia, I’d bring a light jacket to put on in the evenings, but a pair of closed pair shoes should be fine. So far this summer has been a bit chilly, but it should warm up towards the time you are visiting. Hope that helps! Toronto might be a bit colder than the East coast as a FYI.

Yep! It’s pretty humid although it might not be as hot. You’ll have to check the weather right before you go. I haven’t written yet about them, but I loved Pod39. Really nice relaxed atmosphere!

Hi Nikola, Plan for mostly summer outfits with some layers for when it’s not as nice out. It will be pretty hot, hopefully, but it’s good to have a light jacket and jeans for days for night time or slightly colder days where there’s rain. Hope that helps and enjoy! Hi Karen, It will be hot, but there are lots of places to sit and relax in A/C. Just take it easy and plan for lots of stops. Most buses and subways are air conditioned if you don’t want to walk everywhere. 🙂

Hi, I’m going to N.Y.C for 3 days then Boston for 2 days and lastly Washington D.C for 2 days. My school is taking us in March for spring break and because the trip is a lot of money I need to know how much money i should bring and how to bring it. Sorry if this doesn’t make sense. 🙂

Hi Aria, It really depends on what you’re doing and what is covered in the trip. There’s plenty of ATMs around NYC if you have a debit card. (I don’t usually recommend carrying a lot of cash around.) I’d plan on at least $50 per day for food/attractions at minimum. I’d check with your school about what costs you are responsible for. Have a great trip!

Your article is very helpful – thanks for taking the time to write it. Would like to ask your advice: I’m travelling to NYC in mid-November for a week. Being from the tropics, I’ve not experienced snow before and am not used to temperate climates. What’s the temperature like in mid-November? Would a fleece jacket with layering beneath and normal jeans generally be sufficient? Apologies for the rookie questions, but I worry about underpacking. Thanks for your time! 🙂 By the way, it will be my first time in NYC, and from what I have been reading, it is a truly unique place!

Hi Cathy, I think that a fleece jacket with layering should be okay, but you can always get a jacket in NYC if that doesn’t cut it. Hopefully, it won’t be too bad in November and you’ll have a great trip!

Hi Liz, I tend to prefer to wear a light sweater with a slightly thicker jacket over it. Also, jeans! I find that works well enough as you can open up your jacket or even take it off if you’re feeling warm!

Packing for NYC in the spring can be a confusing affair. The days fluctuate between chilly and mild, so packing the right clothes is essential to make sure you stay comfortable. In an effort to make things easier on you, I’ve created a fool-proof NYC spring packing list from a local’s perspective. Longtime readers know that I’m not one for small talk, so let’s dive right in!

An oversized jean jacket is the quintessential NYC spring clothing essential. Effortlessly easy to style, durable denim provides just the right amount of warmth for the city’s mild spring weather (which tends to kick in around the end of April).

Ideal for layering over everything from casual tees to spring dresses, this is a timeless wardrobe staple great for those wondering what to pack for NYC in the spring. I’m a huge fan of packing light and try to get as much use as possible out of a single item — maxi dresses give me the most bang for my buck. All this to say, maxi dresses are an essential thing to pack for New York City in the spring.

I’ve learned that when packing sweaters, some strategy is required. Too thick, and you’ll pay the price when you find yourself peeling off layers on a subway platform. Too thin, and you’ll feel instant regret when the wind blows and you find yourself ducking into a cafe for shelter.

When thinking about what to wear in New York City in the spring, consider packing sweaters that are breathable and light, they make layering a breeze. Speaking from personal experience, I’ve learned to purchase mostly cashmere-blend sweaters to get me through the chilly morning and evenings.

Long-time readers know that my most worn sweater is this gem (worth every penny), closely followed by this one (which I have in 2 colors). But, at the end of the day, you know how your body deals with cold weather best, so pack whatever feels right to you. If helpful, here’s the exact sweaters I have on rotation in my wardrobe:

Worth Mention: If you’re visiting New York City in the early spring (March 20 through mid-April), you’ll need to pack long-sleeve t-shirts to wear under your sweaters. If you run cold like me, it might be helpful to pack these thermal layers (the only brand I buy) .

Practical and stylish, a classic trench coat is an ideal choice for NYC’s moody spring weather. Spring in the city can be unpredictable, from unannounced showers to fluctuating temperatures, having a coat that’s water-resistant, lightweight and warm is a must when visiting New York City in the spring.

The best part? Trench coats are versatile and stylish enough to transition from casual daytime wear to fancy outings (like nice dinners and Broadway shows). It’s smart, it’s stylish and it doesn’t ask for much, adding a trench coat to your New York City spring outfit ideas is a no-brainer! If interested, here’s my go-to trench coat (I’ve owned it for years, it’s a great deal for the quality).

Plan B: Tailored Blazer

As I get older, I’m noticing that my style tends to lean more relaxed (oversized jean jacket), but if you feel more put together in a blazer, you go, girl! I consider a tailored blazer a staple in my spring NYC wardrobe for casual date nights.

There’s something about a good blazer that makes me feel put together without much effort, I’m all about shortcuts (and this one is a breeze!). Here’s the one blazer I own (yes, really – ha! I’m not fancy enough for two).

If you only take away one bit of advice from this list of New York City spring outfit ideas, let it be this: the best investment you’ll make is purchasing a good quality (preferably stylish) wool coat that will keep you warm in the evenings.

After years of living through chilly winters and springs in NYC, I finally decided to buy a high quality wool coat that looks stylish and doesn’t break the bank. I was so impressed by the quality that I bought another color the following year. All told, I’ve had this navy wool coat for 4 years and it still looks new . I can’t recommend it enough.

With daily March temperatures averaging between 46°F to 55°F, you can’t afford to skimp on a good quality wool coat while planning outfits for NYC in spring.

When people ask me for advice on what to wear in New York City in the spring, without a doubt I always mention that good shoes are non-negotiable. The second your sneakers get wet or your toes freeze because there isn’t enough insulation in your shoes, misery kicks in. You want nothing more than to head back to the hotel and call it an early day.

• Cashmere: Cashmere is considered to be luxurious and softer than traditional wool. Although not quite as warm as wool, it’s a popular light-weight material used in sweaters and scarves.
• Silk: Silk is one of the best materials to wear in New York in the spring of how tightly woven the fabric is when created. This acts like an insulator and keeps your body heat trapped in the fabric.

As most of you know, I just got back from a five-day trip to New York City. I was there for New York Fashion Week attending different shows and events but of course, I also had some time to explore, take photos, and try new restaurants.

Yesterday, I rounded up the outfits I wore to the shows in this blog post and today I’m sharing the other ten outfits. These are toned down a bit and perfect for those “normal” occasions that you’re likely taking part in during your fall trip to NYC.

As per usual, links to everything can be found below  (just click the pink text) , and I tried my best to leave directions to as many photo locations as possible. I hope you love these looks—fair warning, a pair of sneakers for walking is a must! You can change into those cute shoes once arriving at your photo spot. 😉

Off To The Airport

I typically like to wear something a little trendier when heading to the airport but with a full forecast of rain + chilly temperatures I figured keeping things casual was probably best. Here I’m sporting all of my comfy wardrobe-essentials. I rave about these high neck tanks from Express all the time—they work with jeans and heels for a night out and with leggings for an athleisure moment.

These are the Aerie crossover leggings and man are they good! Not only is the waistband super flattering, but they are the perfect weight for this transition season. Plus, they don’t look super athletic-y which I love. I popped on a cute hoodie to keep warm and slipped into my all-time favorite white sneakers from Dolce Vita.

Gal On The Go

I just got new luggage from Samsonite and needed to post a photo to Instagram—naturally, I got dolled up for an epic suitcase shot once arriving in the city. This zebra bubble dress is from Showpo and scored lots of love from you. It has the cutest puff sleeves and a full skirt which I love.

To elongate the legs I’m wearing white heels from Fashion Nova. Sadly they are sold out already but I linked a similar white pair for you to shop. I wore these all week long and somehow made it out without any crazy blisters! Woohoo!

Italian Bistro

On our first night in the city, we went to a show then grabbed dinner at the cutest Italian restaurant. I figured a two-piece set would be perfect for the occasion. This tan one is from Whitefox Boutique and is crazy flattering.

The top is an adorable halter neck moment with an open back and the skirt is a fitted midi that hugs your curves in all the right places. This set definitely needs a pair of heels to help dress it up—I’m wearing my favorite nude ones this time around. Throwing my hair into a claw clip and grabbing a cute crossbody to complete my look!

Laced Up In Leather

Statement pants are the key to my heart. I’ve been eyeing these wrap-around pants for months now. These were a huge trend on last season’s runways and they are slowly but surely making their way into our everyday retailers. I know the ankle detail is unique but I think it adds so much to your average pair of pants. Plus, I love blue leather.

These are another Fashion Nova find and they are fantastic. They run a bit small though so I would recommend sizing up. Because they speak for themselves, I kept the rest of this fit rather simple with just a white tank and simple heels. The perfect fit for drinks with the gals! Or hanging off a mail truck at 8 am…. you decide!

Brunching Babes

Off to brunch in the cutest babydoll dress. I’ve been eyeing the Selki dresses for months now but just can’t justify the hundreds of dollars. When I saw this piece with a similar silhouette for a fraction of the cost, I jumped right on it. It has the cutest fit—with huge puff sleeves and a full skirt, I felt like I was wearing a cute little tutu.

Dinner Date

Orange is slowly but surely becoming my favorite color to wear. I mean come on…. this look is showstopping!!! Believe it or not, this dress is a recent SheIn find and the quality of it is unbelievable. This material is incredibly stretchy, hugging your curves in all the right places and making your booty look amazing.

It has the sweetest ring detail along the center and wraps around the neck for a super unique fit. Plus, the high leg slit helps elongate the legs and makes this piece so much easier to walk in. I love this for a dressy dinner date or even a late fall wedding!

Gelato With The Girls

Grabbed this faux leather dress from Showpo and it did not disappoint! I love how versatile this piece is. I popped it on with my Zina sneakers to grab gelato in Little Italy. However, it would look adorable with sheer tights and booties to dress it up a bit! I’m obsessed.

Stomping Around Soho

I knew I was taking this two-piece set to NYC the second I laid eyes on it. So many content creators I follow have been sharing photos in Soho. The architecture over here is incredible + the soft tones give off all the fall vibes. Of course, we had to trek out Sunday morning for some photos.

This plaid set is adorable. I love the two pieces together but also plan on wearing the skirt with a chunky sweater and boots as fall creeps up. In the meantime, I’m styling the set as intended with my go-to brown leather boots from Franco Sarto and my favorite felt hat. This look screams NYC fall and I couldn’t love it more.

Business Fab

Whitefox Boutique deserves an honorable mention for their sizing because my gosh everything from them fits me like a damn glove! Grabbed these pants in a size XS and with my favorite white fluffy heels on, they are the perfect length. Plus, these heels make every outfit a little more exciting. If you’re looking for a fun yet appropriate ways to dress up your business casual clothes, I highly recommend a statement heel like these!

Subway In Style

What—you’ve never seen a girl this excited to catch the subway?! My either, lol. These shrug sleeve sweaters are all the rage this season. The two-piece sets are so unique and paired with colorful denim you’re sure to be the coolest girl on the block. My jeans are from Fashion Nova and I’m wearing a 0. These straight legs run a little long; I chopped the bottoms to shorten them up a bit + give them a raw hem.

Pop on your favorite white kicks to complete the ultimate city girl outfit. You’re sure to look like a local in this fit.

From being one of the fashion capitals of the world, to a goldmine of modern architecture, to a hub of culture, New York City attracts millions of visitors every year. I am a wannabe New Yorker so naturally, I am the most annoying tourist every time I visit.

No city has captured my heart quite like NYC and no city makes me feel so free to wear what I want. It’s a metropolis for the bold and it thrives on diversity. The city is bustling with culture from Broadway to the Bronx.

If you are planning a trip to New York, here are a few outfit ideas for every stop on your itinerary. Just remember: dare to wear what you love. Mix colors and fabrics! Play around with silhouettes! Defy trends and find your own style.

New York City Look 1: Main Attractions

You just can’t miss the Empire State Building, Times Square, and the Statue of Liberty. Will this make you be a basic tourist? Yes. But these are must see sights if you have never been to The Big Apple.

For the day, sport a tan-based outfit with a cozy turtleneck sweater and matching boots. The chunky heel on these is of the utmost importance, as you will be doing a lot of walking. The bold, red miniskirt is the perfect flavor for fall. Accessorize with a brown shoulder bag and gold jewelry.

NYC Outfit 2: Dinner on the Hudson

One of my favorite memories from NYC is taking a dinner cruise on the Hudson at sunset with my family. The view, the food, the music, and of course, the photo op, all made the night magical.

Who says a little black dress has to be so… little? There’s nothing little about these sleeves, and it’s just the kind of drama NYC craves. Pair it with some teal stilettos that would make Carrie Bradshaw proud! This is a great opportunity to rock some sparkly, silver jewelry as well.

New York City Look 3: Museums

I’ve been to NYC seven times and without fail, every time I make time for a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While there are masterpieces in every room, I always find myself spending hours examining every detail of the Costume Institute’s Exhibit.

You can’t go to New York without going to a museum and if you want to look the part of an art connoisseur, you have to dress like it. Bring a youthful energy to a tweed look with this green and white blazer dress. Finish it off with some ankle leather boots and on-trend ruched bag.

NYC Outfit 4: Jazz Club

Visiting a Jazz club in Harlem is an experience you’ll never forget. You will feel like you’re being transported to another time! The energy is contagious, the music is inspiring, and you’ll want an outfit that makes dancing fun.

A wrap dress will give you the perfect mobility and coverage for a night of dancing (we have Queen Diane Von Furstenberg to thank for that!). Try using complimentary colors like blue and orange. It may seem extravagant, but it will look good because the color theorists say so. I will warn you however, wear heels at your own discretion. We do love a good sneaker option for a night out.

New York City Look 5: Brunch

“On the Upper East Side, we don’t  do  breakfast. We do brunch.” You know you’ve seen a show too many times when you can recall from memory the most irrelevant quotes. [Side note: consider taking a Gossip Girl tour of NYC!]

If you’re planning on going to brunch, a cute floral dress for fall will serve as the base for a perfect outfit. Miranda Priestly might even say “Groundbreaking.” Throw on a fedora and reach for a wine colored purse for dramatic flare.

NYC Outfit 6: Brooklyn Heights Promenade

One of the best views of the city can be found at the Brooklyn Promenade. Really, a tour of Brooklyn should be a day of its own! I love the style there. Everyone always looks so fun and edgy.

Pair a groovy shirt with a throwback 70s print with some comfy knit pants. Pink Converse made of sustainable materials are perfect for hitting the road. Don’t forget some delicate jewelry to finish off your look.

New York City Look 7: Broadway

The stars may not shine in the New York City skies but they sure do on Broadway! Watching one of New York’s iconic musicals is must do for anyone visiting the city. It’s an experience you will never forget.

Dress for the part in some bold sapphire jewelry and hot pink top. Nail the New Yorker look with some sleek leather boots and skirt, and don’t forget the coat that covers it all up for the big reveal when you step into the theater.

NYC Outfit 8: Central Park

Central Park is the set of basically every Law & Order episode and every one’s favorite Instagram location. In all my visits, I still don’t believe I’ve been able to explore the entire city park. It’s so large that I really don’t know how anyone could.

Rachel Green is forever the fashion queen of New York City, so for a day at the park there’s no one better to emulate. A retro skirt with tan boots, a halter top, and a sleek brown leather blazer would make her jump for joy.

New York City Look 9: The High Line

A hidden gem of New York is The High Line which is a testament of the beauty of both nature and the city.

The meat packing district is pretty much as cool as it gets, so don’t be afraid to wear something fun like a coordinated green outfit. Throw on some comfy white sneakers to walk down the former tracks. Styling tip: wear an unexpected color (like lilac) on an already colorful look and then throw on some dark rectangular shades and people will be confusing you for the likes of Gigi Hadid or Kendall Jenner .

NYC Outfit 10: Night Out

No one does night life like New Yorkers. However, it’s very cold in the city at night during the fall, so I suggest you wear some pants and a warm coat like this show-stopping motorcycle jacket.

Go for some deep colors like these wine colored boots and deep emerald velvet corset to contrast with shimmery leather pants . Most of all, make sure you’re comfortable because it will be a long night.

What To Wear in NYC in the Summer

There’s truly nothing like NYC in the summertime! The city feels alive, the parks are full of people sunbathing and hanging with friends, sidewalk streateries are buzzing, and New Yorkers flock to waterfront activities (like sailing on the Hudson River !) Dressing appropriately for summer in NYC can help you feel stylish and comfortable despite the heat and humidity! Today I’m rounding up some of my tried and true summer in New York outfits to help you beat the heat while staying NYC chic.

When dressing for the heat and humidity that comes with being a New Yorker in the summer, I tend to stick to breathable fabrics that don’t show as much sweat. Between walking (almost) everywhere and taking the subway, you will be sweating! I like clothing made from breathable cotton, linen, and silk (or moisture-wicking Nylon) in the summertime. I also tend to stick to silhouettes that allow for movement — think flowy dresses and tanks, anything that doesn’t sit too close to the body and will help you feel less stifled in the NYC heat.

Linen Shorts

Linen shorts are one of the go-to items I reach for during the summer. I love how chic tailored shorts look, plus the lightweight linen fabric is perfect when the temperatures are soaring. It’s nice to feel put together but not be sweltering!

Lightweight Tank

Don’t forget to pack a comfy lightweight tank for a summer trip to New York City. Pair with shorts and skirts or jeans — a classic tank is a mix-and-match workhorse in my wardrobe! Pair this with shorts for the day and change into a trouser or skirt for night.

Denim Shorts

I’m a sucker for a slip dress, the silhouette is just so sleek and it’s easy to dress up or dress down. A slip dress is great to wear to dinner and a show, one of my absolute favorite NYC activities.

Midi length has been one of my go-to dress styles this summer. I think it’s a super flattering length, I can’t get enough!

I adore the smocked Hills House Nap dress. It’s a dress I reach for over and over again on a summer day in NYC! One of those throw-on-and-go items in my closet. Read my Hill House Nap Dress Review for sizing info!

Statement Dress

You can’t make a trip to the Big Apple without a fabulous statement dress! Whether it’s a show, a fun dinner, or another special event — there’s always an occasion to dress up in NYC.

Lightweight Sweater

For those moments when the air conditioning is on full blast, I always tuck a lightweight cardigan into my bag so I’m not freezing.

1. Linen shorts and tank

These Reformation Mason shorts paired with a tank have become my unofficial summer outfit. I’ve gotten tons of wear out of this super affordable ribbed tank . I also love this option from J.Crew and this Everlane tank .

2. Slip dress

The J.Crew Gwyneth slip dress is one of my favs. I think this silhouette with a higher neck line is also so chic, as is this Jenni Kayne slip dress . Also love this linen slip dress option .

3. Midi dress and sandals

While the dress above is sadly sold out, I love this colorful dress with side cutouts (more on my favorite cutout summer dresses here ) , this puff sleeve dress from Abercrombie is a great price, the open back on this dress is so fun (I own and love it!). Paired above with my beloved gold bow mules !

4. Nap dress

The classic Nap Dress is a personal favorite, I also love this version with a sweetheart neckline and this high neck version . See my full Hill House dress collection here !

What to wear in the summer in New York City?

Summer officially begins on June 21st and July and August are always hot months in NYC. And if you are coming to the city and you don’t know how to pack, I’m gonna share some tips. I would say, basically, when you chose your clothes to spend some summer days here in New York, you need to make some adjustments – after all, travel requires comfort. So forget high heels, even wedges. You should bring flats and sneakers because here you will walk a lot, trust me!

The first thing you need to remember when packing to NYC in summer is: leave your coats at home, you will not gonna need them! Keep in mind that summer in New York can be very humid, which will make you feel that absolutely every inch of your body is sticking. But overall, I would say that it is not like that every day. It depends on the year, of course. July and August usually have the highest averages – especially the second half of July and the first half of August. In September, the weather is a delight – it’s another ideal month for those who do not like extremes. Temperatures range from 54 to 70F in May, from 63 to 79 in June, 68 to 84F in July, 67 at 82F in August, and 60 at 75F in September. Although summer officially begins in June, the warm temperature usually starts by the end of May.

What to pack for summer in NYC

I’m gonna list all the items I usually wear over the summer in the city and I’m gonna explain a little bit about each one. Then, I’m gonna show you some outfit ideas!

• Shorts –  denim shorts are among my favorite items for summer outfits. I love the versatility. There is no better combination than denim shorts with a t-shirt to explore the city the whole day. You can also use it with a cotton shirt – it is classic and elegant and you will be ready to go to a rooftop bar at the end of the day and have a drink. You can add more personality by styling with necklaces, tiaras, or bracelets. That’s what I like to do when I use denim shorts and a t-shirt. I particularly love high waist denim shorts and besides t-shirts, I love to wear them with cropped tops and bodysuits. I also suggest  linen or cotton shorts – natural fabrics are always the best choices for summer and these fabrics help to create a more chic outfit.

Shop shorts:

• Dresses – a dress is also another favorite piece for the summer, right? I love how effortless it is and you can pack maxi, midi, or short dresses for your trip to New York City and use them with sneakers, flats, or sandals. Just be careful with short dresses with light fabrics because of the wind. 

Shop dresses:

• Skirts – the same way you can choose the different lengths for the dresses, you can do with skirts. Short, mid, or maxi: it doesn’t matter your preference, these items are also great pieces for your summer outfits in the city. I particularly love the midi and maxi ones because they are very comfortable and you don’t need to worry about accidentally “showing too much” lol. You can mix and match your t-shirts and vary your outfits using either skirts or shorts. When packing, try to plan some outfits on your mind and choose items that can be used with more than one option. 

Shop skirts:

• T-shirts/crop tops – t-shirts and crop tops are my favorite tops for summer and I can mix and match with my shorts and skirts, depending on the day and on my mood. 
• Denim/cotton/linen pants – depending on the time of your trip, you may need pants – maybe for going somewhere at night or for a day at the museum (the air conditioning here is strong, lol!). For summer, I prefer light blue jeans – those with destroyed details are a great choice for the summer season. Linen is also an excellent choice, because it’s really light – and chic!

Shop pants:

• Shoes – as I mentioned, we walk a lot in the city! So, I recommend great sneakers (the white ones are so easy to style!) and flats! Flat sandals can also be a good choice, but only for a day that you are not gonna walk everywhere – like a museum day, for example. I say that because the city streets, sidewalks, and subway stations are not the cleanest ones… High heels are only necessary for places that require a dress code (like some restaurants, rooftops, and dance clubs) and you can usually find out about this on the venue website. And if you allow me to give you some advice: Birkenstock sandals! I was shocked when I discovered how comfy these sandals are! 

Shop shoes:

• Light jacket – a light parka, a denim jacket, or even a cardigan can be good for those days that are not so hot or during a cruise or a boat tour when it is usually windy. 

Shop jackets

• Sunglasses/hats/jewelry – don’t forget to include your favorite fashion accessories – today, I’m very neutral when choosing colors and prints and I prefer to elevate my style using sunglasses, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. You can also use hair props like hats and tiaras.

42 of the Best Small Towns in New York for an Idyllic Getaway

Outside of NYC, you'll find quaint villages and serene waterfront hamlets.

Ah, New York, New York. As they say, a city so nice, they named it twice! But what happens when you want to venture outside that Big Apple and into the rest of New York? State , that is.

Well, the Empire State has plenty to offer.

Out east, there's Long Island—home to Montauk , the Hamptons, and all the beaches and vineyards a summer vacationer could ask for. There, you have chic, luxe hotels, award-winning restaurants, water sports, world-class wine—and the sand between your toes. Venture to the very tip, and they say you've reached the "end of the world." Staring out from Montauk Point Lighthouse, you might just believe it. (Serenity found!)

Where will you find your oasis? Without further ado, we present 42 of our favorite small, charming towns (and picturesque villages, hamlets, and even some sweet cities) in New York State.

Schenectady

Just a stone's throw from Albany, Schenectady boasts a bustling main street, complete with classic architecture and a well-preserved street clock. But perhaps its loveliest place for a stroll would be the Central Park Rose Garden, which features 4,000 rose bushes, a tiered fountain, and even a babbling brook. (Fun fact: Schenectady is where 2012's The Place Beyond the Pines , starring the now-married Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes, was filmed.)

Saranac Lake

Visit this village among the Adirondack Mountains for the cure cottage architecture of the houses that surround the lake and the 1.1-mile Moose Pond Trail. Bonus: It's smooth enough to hike with kids.

As it's placed snugly in the Finger Lakes' wine country, Corning is, of course, a great place for a fine beverage. But our favorite reason to visit is the Corning Museum of Glass. The chic space covers more than 3,500 years of glassmaking history, and you can even watch glassblowers at work and design a glass ornament of your own.

Cooperstown

You know Cooperstown as the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame—and indeed, the Hall's annual Induction Weekend is the town's biggest event. But there's so much more to see and do here. Take in art (at the Fenimore Art Museum) or music (at the Glimmerglass Opera), antique, golf, and even horseback ride. As for where to stay, may we recommend the Otesaga Resort Hotel—an old-school stunner that just so happens to be on the National Register for Historic Places—or the charming Victorian Inn at Cooperstown, pictured here.

Watkins Glen

In Watkins Glen, choose your adventure! In one direction, explore the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, known for its diverse lineup of world-class wines. In the other, visit the Watkins Glen State Park, where you'll find no fewer than 19 waterfalls. (The Gorge Trail, which lines Glen Creek, is known to be particularly easy on the eyes.) And don't miss the colorful Seneca Harbor Park Pier, pictured here, of course.

If you're headed here, one of the Catskills' prettiest locales, it's fair to suspect you're also headed to Mohonk Mountain House. A resort founded by the Smiley Family in 1869, the Victorian castle sits right on the water—which is why so many hop in a kayak as soon as they step outside. Surrounded by so much natural beauty, many choose to hike, but you can also treat yourself to an afternoon tea or a trip to the spa. Don't forget the nearby Historic Huguenot Street, with history preserved from as far back as the mid-17th century, when the area was known as "New Netherland."

Only 90 minutes north of New York City, Beacon is known for its beautifully preserved Victorian homes, as well as its quaint Main Street, filled with shops, restaurants, and art galleries. But no trip is complete without a visit to its enormous contemporary art museum, Dia Beacon. Not only does it feature art and installations from some of the modern greats, including Louise Bourgeois and Michael Heizer, but it also has some very famous fans: BTS' art-loving leader, RM, filmed a concert for his debut solo album, Indigo , inside.

Lake Placid

Lake Placid is the winter sports destination, even hosting the Winter Olympics in both 1932 and 1980 . But if, unlike a certain animated ice queen, the cold does bother you, there are also plenty of pretty shops and restaurants you can stay warm in. As you can see, it's absolutely stunning in the fall too.

Despite the fact that Woodstock—the iconic music and art fair of the '60s—was not actually held in Woodstock, the town has always been considered a home for the artistically inclined (back in the day, you could easily bump into Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan). No surprise, then, that if you visit Woodstock's town center, you'll find music shops and art galleries galore.

Pleasantville

With its pristine downtown—complete with an oversized gazebo, the Pleasantville Diner, The Village Bookstore, and more—you'd be forgiven for mistaking Pleasantville for the set of Gilmore Girls . But this real-world beaut is actually a bit more modern. Look no further than the Jacob Burns Film Center for proof. The five-screen, art-house theater plays films from around the world, while hosting same of the biggest names in cinema: Jason Reitman, Jon Stewart, Ryan Gosling, Anjelica Huston, and Meryl Streep have all come to speak. The town's also less than a 10-minute drive to Blue Hill Stone Barns, arguably the culinary experience of the Hudson Valley, complete with its own highly innovative farm.

The idyllic village of Aurora sits on Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes region. About 700 residents live in the town, and it is also home to Wells College. Plan your stay at The Inns of Aurora , with its impeccable accommodations and delicious dining options, plus activities like archery, kayaking, or touring local wineries. You'll want to spend a full day luxuriating at the spa.

If you love your little, quaint towns with a dash of luxury—particularly in the form of a lush stay—Rhinebeck is for you. Its tree-lined high street is chock-full of speciality shops—including Samuel's Sweet Shop, a classic candy shop owned by none other than actors Paul Rudd, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Hilarie Burton. (Fingers crossed for a sighting!) Once your sweet tooth gets its fix, head back to one of the prettiest hotels in the area: the Parisian-inspired Mirbeau Inn & Spa.

Sleepy Hollow, New York

Yes, we're talking about the Sleepy Hollow! The village is, of course, the setting of Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," aka the tale of the Headless Horseman. Naturally, such a claim to fame comes alive around Halloween. A proper spooky visit includes haunted hayrides, cemetery tours, and yes, a stop by the Headless Horseman Statue .

Historic Greenport Village looks like something out of a harborside fairytale. At The Haborfront Inn, the architecture is a nod to the waterfront boarding houses of yore (with very modern amenities, like a pool and private beach). And for a room right on the Long Island Sound, with a view of the most gorgeous sunset, Sound View Greenport can't be beat. The North Fork area is also home to the famed lavender field, Lavender by the Bay, wineries galore, and an antique carousel that kids will adore.

Andes is truly small—with just over 1,000 residents to its name—but when it comes to charm, it goes big . There's a special focus on fresh ingredients at both the restaurants and the cideries: Wayside Cider & Taproom (pictured here) serves hard ciders made with apples from their orchard. Plus, leaf-peeping in the fall, both in town and throughout the Catskills, is incomparable.

Bovina is one of upstate New York's historic dairy towns, but we don't quite come for the milk. We come for our favorite restaurant: The Brushland Eating House. The restaurant offers a single seating per night to encourage conversation, say owners Sara and Sohail Zandi. "We want it to feel warm, familiar, and friendly," says Sara. With can-lined walls and a piano in the window, they can consider that mission accomplished.

Here, you'll find eclectic antique stores, beloved vintage shops, and lots of quality restaurants. Our pick? The Red Onion, which not only has a lauded vegetarian-friendly menu, but also a Wine Spectator Award. Don't miss the Cantine Dam Falls—and if you love nature and art, you have to see Opus 40 , a massive environment sculpture that Architectural Digest called "one of the largest and most beguiling works of art on the entire continent." Oh, and this lighthouse? It's also the sweetest little bed and breakfast .

Nicknamed "The Friendly City," Hudson has just under 7,000 inhabitants, but that hasn't stopped it from taking over the Hudson Valley. Included on our list of the "Best Small Towns in the U.S.," Hudson has orchards, galleries, breweries, fine antique shopping (our go-to: Red Chair on Warren), and a brand-new boutique hotel called The Maker. And all with a perfect view of the river.

Montauk is known by many Long Islanders as "The End"—and indeed, it is the easternmost part of the island (and, for that matter, New York State). Nevertheless, if you're new to Long Island's famed Hamptons, we'd argue that Montauk is actually a great place to begin . It's just as lovely as any other Hamptons village—one scenic bike ride to the Montauk Point Lighthouse will convince you of that—but it feels a bit more casual and cozy. If you're looking to kick it up a notch though, Gurney's Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa, with its private beach club and ocean-themed spa, will certainly do the trick.

Bridgehampton

While we love the slightly more casual feel throughout Montauk, we are certainly not opposed to the ever-chic Bridgehampton—most especially, their crowning jewel, Topping Rose House. The 19th-century estate splendidly maintains its historic architecture, but there are a few perfectly modern touches too, including a serene lap pool and a Jean-Georges restaurant (farm-to-table, of course).

De la Torre Brothers Are Making the Most of Maximalism

Working and living on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, they shatter entrenched ideas about beauty and good taste.

The wallpapered-room is filled with antiques and a menagerie of blinged-out taxidermy. A 24-foot-long banquet table has been laid out, but the dinner guests seem to have disappeared, leaving their coats behind. On the table: nucleated eyeballs nestling in golden spoons, miniature torsos propped up on cake stands, and baby Kewpie dolls trapped in red goo, like candied desserts. A glass “Capitalist Pig,” one of several profane centerpieces, grins as it defecates gold coins.

The banquet, an installation called “Le Point de Bascule” (“The Tipping Point”) at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, is visually stunning, and also a bit repulsive — and that’s the point. “We’re repulsed by this opulence,” said one of its creators, Einar de la Torre. “But we’re also thinking: ‘God, I wish I’d been invited to this party.’”

The brothers Einar and Jamex de la Torre create mixed-media works of dazzling complexity. Using disparate materials, including blown glass, mass-produced curios, resin castings and photocollage, the siblings, who have collaborated artistically since the 1990s, construct richly detailed, mandala-like installations; lenticular prints that shimmy and explode with movement; and color-saturated glass sculptures embedded with workaday items like dominoes, coins or doll parts.

Pre-Columbian deities, Mexican lucha libre wrestlers, Olmec heads, Slavic water spirits — the de la Torres’ visual universe is vast and pantheistic. The brothers freely mix high and low, in part, they say, to challenge entrenched ideas about beauty and “good taste.”

“In college, there was a lot of minimalism,” Einar, the younger of the siblings, recalled at a recent interview at their studio in Baja California, Mexico. “We thought: how the hell are we ever going to make it in the art world, which wants to distill everything down to the bare bones? We’re kind of the opposite. We wanted to add more meaning.”

Two current exhibitions carry the brothers’ maximalist vision further afield. “Collidoscope,” their touring retrospective, featuring 40 mixed-media works, is at the Corning Museum of Glass, in upstate New York — where the brothers had a recent residency — through early 2025.

“Upward Mobility,” at the McNay Art Museum through Sept. 15, includes, in “Le Point de Bascule,” their first chandeliers — anthropomorphic objects with humanlike arms brandishing broken beer bottles, signaling that the “masses are outside with torches,” Einar said.

In another gallery, two oversize lenticular works underscore the show’s weighty themes — excessive consumption and climate apocalypse — with dark humor and kaleidoscopic exuberance. They began to experiment with lenticular printing, a revolutionary 3-D printing technique, in the late aughts, drawn to the format’s ability to contain many images in one frame. “Coatzilla,” a lenticular print at the McNay Art Museum that the brothers liken to a monster movie poster, depicts the Aztec earth mother goddess, Coatlicue, as a two-headed, Godzilla-like creature. She stomps across Mexico City’s fast-disintegrating downtown, “grumpy,” Einar explained, because humanity has ravaged the world she made.

In “Miclantiputin,” another lenticular, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, is melded with the lantern-jawed Aztec god of the underworld, Mictlantecuhtli. Ribbons of traffic-clogged highways gush from the hybrid monster’s rib cage, and his fingers are intercontinental missiles. In the small, black-box gallery space where the posters hang, a projector shows traffic footage from Mexico City’s Paseo de la Reforma on the floor, encouraging visitors to play out their own monstrous destruction on the capital by stomping on the floor, a commentary on humanity’s monster-like impulse toward destruction. The de la Torre brothers unlock the lenticular’s narrative possibilities — often dismissed as the stuff of playing cards and flickering prayer cards — and its mesmeric qualities.

“I’ve had countless people who are artists, and not only glass artists, tell me the brothers made a significant impact on their artistic practice after they saw them demonstrate or teach at various places around the world,” said Tami Landis, a curator of postwar and contemporary glass at the Corning Museum of Glass.

Recently, working in collaboration with the Corning’s in-house glass artists, the brothers produced dozens of new glass pieces for a mandala-like installation commissioned by the museum. The yet-untitled finished work, which will be unveiled there in November, will “have a large impact on the museum’s galleries,” Landis said.

“They are pushing not only the medium of glass, but the medium of sculpture itself,” Landis added. “They are pushing it by thinking in terms of a multiplicity of layers, which definitely was something you didn’t see as much in the glass field in the early ’80s and ’90s.”

Learning From Godzilla

Born to a Mexican father and a Danish-Mexican mother in the early 1960s, in Guadalajara, in western Mexico, the de la Torre brothers attended Colegio Cervantes, an all-boys Roman Catholic school, where they remember watching Godzilla. Einar, 60, is the more loquacious one; Jamex, 64, the polite, unflappable older brother. Their father was a gifted but troubled architect, “extremely charming to friends and colleagues” but “monstrous” to his family when he drank, Jamex recounted. In 1972, when he was 12, and Einar was 8, their parents separated and their mother took the boys to live with extended family in Southern California.

The culture shock was vivid, but also “wondrous,” Jamex said. Their mother was a certified translator, a wordsmith with a gift for limericks. From her, they inherited a love of wordplay (evident in the brothers’ titles, often featuring portmanteaus or Spanglish puns), and her sense of cultural fluidity, privileging them with an outsider’s insight into both Mexican and American cultures.

They both studied glassblowing at the California State University of Long Beach , falling in love with the medium’s plasticity and immediacy, and the intense spirit of collaboration that working in a “hot shop” demands from glass artists. They found a mentor in the studio glass artist Therman Statom , learning from him the business of being an artist — the minutiae of running a studio and juggling public art projects. Early on, they developed an agnostic view toward labels, neither courting nor rejecting them. “As a young artist, you’re wondering: Are you a craft person? Are you a conceptual artist? Are you Mexicano? Are you Americano? A Chicano?” Einar said. “At some point, we understood that the least we worried about it, the better.”

A ‘Glittering Rubble’ of Destroyed Work

Before transitioning into full-time artmaking, the brothers operated a small glass-work business in Los Angeles for more than a decade, creating custom pieces for museums and crystal shops. They booked their first solo gallery show in 1994, 30 years ago this year, at San Francisco’s Galería de la Raza. In 1995, the unthinkable happened when their solo show at MACLA art space in San Jose, for Latino and Chicano culture, was vandalized. Two years’ worth of their work was smashed to smithereens. Nearly three decades later, they remember that day in surreal detail, including the police sergeant who teared up when he saw the glittering rubble of their shattered work.

Since the 1990s, the brothers have lived and worked on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, traveling once or twice a week between San Diego and their “homebase,” a small ranch abutting the main highway in El Valle de Guadalupe, Baja. They remember El Valle before it became known as Mexican wine country, before the profusion of hip restaurants, wine barrel-shaped rental cottages, and glamping tents now permanently draped over its hillsides.

In the summer, the main road gets so clogged with tourist traffic, it’s hard to leave the ranch, Einar told me during a tour of the property. In late spring, at the cusp of the busy season, the highway is relatively tranquil, and the ranch’s meandering paths are dotted with wild blooming artichoke plants. The brothers are in their studio preparing for an upcoming residency. They travel throughout the year, in demand as visiting artists at top glass art programs like Pilchuck in Washington State. Their studio is cavernous and light-filled, with red brick, glass walls and cathedral ceilings designed to frame the property’s great sprawling oak tree.

Rolling cabinets are filled with spray paint and adhesives. Industrial shelves are stacked with dozens of plastic containers, a quirky ever-expanding archive of material culture: doll parts, ceramic statuettes, plastic insects. Einar frequents a flea market in south San Diego, scavenging for “carefully chosen” objects (a description he prefers to “found objects”). The baubles are as important to their work as any finely wrought sheet of glass.

In conversation, they oscillate between disparate topics — the dismal state of arts funding in Mexico, the crumbling firewall between the worlds of fine art and craft, what great fun it would be to one day mount a show at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The brothers don’t finish each other’s sentences so much as they speak in shorthand. The easy give and take between the two is remarkable, and it becomes quickly evident why a former student once described them as “idea machines.”

“They rebel very militantly against the idea of the lone artist, painting by themselves, lonely and alienated in their garret or studio,” the producer and director Isaac Artenstein told me. “They’re just the opposite.” Artenstein has been working on a documentary about the siblings, titled “De la Torre Brothers: Artists on the Line.”

He recently spent an afternoon filming them at Art-Hell , the glassblowing studio inside the Bread & Salt, an arts center in San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood, where the brothers maintain a satellite studio. “I really know of no other artists like them in the U.S.,” Artenstein said. “The level of work that they do, the complexity, the sense of humor.”

“It’s overwhelming, but in a wonderful way.”
