The Silk Road Travel Guide

Turkistan has been an important place of pilgrimage since Timurid times. The mausoleum of the Sufi saint Yasawi attracts pilgrims from all over Kazakhstan, as well as neighbouring countries.

If you are crossing Kazakhstan east-west, Turkistan makes for an interesting stop-over to bear witness to religious practice in Kazakhstan today, and to marvel at the monstrous dimensions of the mausoleum.

Table of Contents

Turkistan used to be known as Yassi. It was an unimportant place until it became the final resting place of the revered Sufi teacher Ahmet Yasawi (Ahmet of Yassi) in the 12th century. Things really took off when Timur came to visit on a pilgrimage in 1389 and ordered the construction of a mausoleum .

The mausoleum remained unfinished upon Timur’s death in 1405. Nonetheless, it is an imposing and beautiful building that echoes the Bibi Khanym mosque and the Gur Emir in Samarkand .

In 2021, plans to turn sleepy Turkistan into a tourist destination started taking shape with the construction of the Karavansaray retail and theme park. It is a bold development in a (tourism) desert. Time will tell if it will become successful like Dubai or Vegas, or stand empty like Turkmenistan’s Awaza.

Things to see and do

Mausoleum of khoja ahmed yassawi.

Turco-Mongol potentate Timur commissioned this impressive brick and tile mausoleum in 1389 for the 12th-century Sufi poet and teacher Khoja Ahmed Yasawi.  While never completed, the newly-renovated structure still shines with blue, white, and turquoise tilework, set amidst grassy lawns and flowerbeds.

According to locals, three trips to the mausoleum is as good as one Umrah to Mecca, and the site is still a major pilgrimage destination for Muslims across Central Asia.  Inside, among other artifacts, you’ll find an enormous bronze kazan made of an alloy of seven metals (iron, zinc, lead, tin, gold, silver and copper) returned to Kazakhstan from the Hermitage’s collection, as well as the tombs of Kazakh khans and sages.

Tickets are 200 tenge for adults; while inside, women should cover their heads, and men their shoulders.

Mausoleum complex

Over the centuries, the mausoleum has attracted more construction. Next to the Yasawi Mausoleum sits the 15th-century mausoleum of one of the daughters of Timur’s grandson Ulugbek, Rabia Sultan Begim.

In front of the mausoleum complex is the square mausoleum of Kazakh leader Esim Khan. South, on top of a slight hill, is the Friday mosque and next to it, a low-slung modern-looking building with a green cupola that shelters the Hilvet underground mosque, built around the tiny cave cell where Yasawi is said to have spent the last years of his life meditating.

Karavansaray

Turkistan’s city fathers inaugurated this $200-million open-air shopping and entertainment complex a short walk from the Yasawi Mausoleum in April 2021.

Operated by the Rixos group, Karavansaray is a crossover between a shopping mall and a theme park. If you think that sounds awful, know that you are not the audience. This is a development aimed at local daytrippers and people from Tashkent , Bishkek , Almaty and Astana.

If you and/or your kids do enjoy this sort of thing, you can take a boat trip on the canal, ride the rides at the family entertainment center, catch the equestrian show at the arena, or see the 8D movie (are you still settling for 7D?) in the Golden Egg cinema.

Farab Library

Named after Baghdad polymath Al-Farabi, this university library ( Gmaps ) is a pleasant modern space to lounge with a book and get away from it all.

The display on Turkic scripts in the ground floor atrium and exhibit on Turkistan history on the third floor are worth a look. The ground floor hosts the Visit Turkistan concept store.

A large and atmospheric bazaar is located on Tauke Khan avenue west of the mausoleum complex.  The local kurt – hard, salty balls of dried sour cream – is well-thought of.  A “food court” of shashlik stands and sellers of asip , a rice and liver sausage, is a good place for a cheap meal on the go.

Accommodation

sultan travel turkistan

Turkistan now has several really good hotels. For the 5-star experience, both Rixos and Karavansaray deliver. In the midrange, Hampton by Hilton is beautifully designed, while the Silk Way Hotel team loves going the extra mile for its guests.

Hostels come and go in Kazakhstan. The VIP Hostel is new since 2021. The best choice at the moment of updating.

Shared taxi and minibus

If you are coming from Shymkent, the quickest way to bridge the 170 km is by shared taxi or minibus, taking about 3 hours along the highway. Leaves when full, which should not take too long on an average day.

Turkestan is connected by direct  train , westwards with Kyzylorda (8-9 hr),   Aqtobe  (26 hr hr),  Uralsk  (39 hr), Atyrau (24 hr), Aktau (37 hr). To the east, trains run to Shymkent (4 hr) and  Almaty  (17-20 hr).

Less comfortable, more expensive long-distance buses to most of these destinations are available as well.

Completed in late 2020, the Turkistan airport connects to destinations within Kazakhstan.

A Short Guide to Turkistan, Kazakhstan

sultan travel turkistan

This post is also available in: Dutch

Turkistan in Kazakhstan, also known as Turkestan or Turkiston, is a city in the Kazakh Desert. Don’t confuse this location with the region between Siberia and Tibet in Central Asia. This guide is for the city Turkistan that is located in Kazakhstan, 160 kilometers from Shymkent.

This little guide to Turkistan is mostly to inspire you to visit this special place in Kazakhstan, Central Asia and provides some basic information. In Turkistan, a relatively well preserved 1600-year-old city, you’ll find ancient mausoleums, archaeological sites and other fascinating human creations. This article includes the highlights of Turkistan: the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, Mausoleum of Rabiga-Sultan Begum, Hilvet Semi-Underground Mosque and The new mosque.  All these highlights are located very close to each other and can easily be visited in one day. If you have some extra time, you can also visit other ancient cities located on the Silk Road.  Next to some photos, I also share some useful info for your visit, such as how to travel to Turkistan and where to sleep. Enjoy!

Be sure to also check out our other articles on Kazakhstan: Two week Itinerary for Kazakhstan 20 Things to do in Almaty

The Highlights of Turkistan, Kazakhstan

1. mausoleum of khoja ahmed yasawi.

The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi is definitely the highlight of Turkistan. It’s Kazakhstan’s greatest architectural monument and most important pilgrimage site. The mausoleum is dedicated to the first great Turkic Muslim holy man, Kozha Akhmed Yasaui and was built by Timur in the late 14th century. Even though this building is unfinished, as Timor died before it was completed, it’s still one of the most beautiful mosaic work you’ll ever encounter.

It isn’t allowed to take photos inside of the Mausoleum, so we only took about a hundred and fifty shots of the beautiful exterior of the building. A small selection can be found below.

2. Mausoleum of Rabigha-Sultan Begum

Located in front of the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, you can find the Mausoleum of Rabigha-Sultan Begum. Rabigha-Sultan Begum was a great-granddaughter of Timur and the wife of the Khan, a 15th-century leader of the then-nomadic Uzbeks.

The Mausoleum of Rabigha-Sultan Begum is a lot smaller than the the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. It isn’t actually the original building, but a replica. The original Mausoleum of Rabigha-Sultan Begum was from the 15th century and torn down in 1898.

3. Hilvet Semi-Underground Mosque

The Hilvet Semi-Underground Mosque can be found on the same grounds as the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. The semi-underground mosque is where Khoja Ahmed Yasawi lived at the end of his life. Here you’ll also find a miniature of the mosque. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any photos inside of the semi-underground mosque.

4. The new mosque: Hoca Ahmet Yesevi Mosque

This new mosque in Turkistan was built in the name of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. Unlike the other structures in Turkistan, this mosque has just recently been built and opened. Unfortunately, I can’t find lot of information on this mosque, but I do know that it is a place of worship, so if you go in make sure to cover yourself properly (hair, shoulders and knees).

The architecture of the new mosque is of course a lot more modern, but definitely also impressive. Even though it doesn’t have a historical value, it’s still very interesting to visit and the building does have a lot of beautiful details. And while you’re so close to it, why not just have a little peek inside?

5. Ancient cities and mausoleums around Turkistan

Next to the beautiful Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi and the other impressive structures on its grounds, there are also interesting places to visit around the city of Turkistan, such as ruins of ancient cities. There are two noteworthy ancient cities, namely Sauran and Otrar. We only visited Otrar and went to the Fortress of Shakhristan and Arystan Bab Mausoleum.

Fortress of Shakhristan

sultan travel turkistan

There were a lot of fortresses in medieval Otrar. This is the gate of the fortress of Shakhristan. Unfortunately, it’s only a replica of the real thing. Next to this replica of the gate of Shakhristan, there isn’t much to see but a lot of bricks and mud.

Arystan Bab Mausoleum

In the city of Otrar you can find the Aystan Bab Mausoleum. Arystan Bab was the mentor of Khojda Ahmed Yassawi and the pilgrimage to the great mausoleum in Turkistan is often followed by a visit to the mausoleum of his teacher.

How to travel to Turkistan

Travel by train to turkistan.

There is a train stop in Turkistan, which makes it possible to travel from Almaty or other big cities. Here you can find train tickets and information about the time, cost and more.

Travel by plane to Turkistan

It is also possible to fly to Shymkent, a city that lies 160 kilometers from Turkistan. From here you can easily travel to Turkistan by taxi.

Travel by minivan to Turkistan

There are minivans leaving from Shymkent to Turkistan that mostly leave in the morning time. Ask your hotel or host about this option, as we haven’t tried it ourselves and aren’t sure where to find them.

Travel by car to Turkistan

Of course you can also travel to Turkistan with a your own or rented car from anywhere. The biggest city nearby is Shymkent, so it would be best to rent a car from here, either with or without driver. There are also tours that can take you to Turkistan.

sultan travel turkistan

Where to stay in Turkistan

You can decide to stay in Shymkent and go on a day trip to Turkistan, or you can decide to book a hotel in Turkistan. As we couldn’t find any hotels to book upfront in Turkistan, we decided to stay in Shymkent. We found one hotel in Turkistan online called Hotel Edem, with kind of mixed review – check it out here .

We also weren’t super happy about our hotel stay in Shymkent, so I did some research and found these two Shymkent hotels that seem to be okay:

  • Aidana Plaza Hotel : Great location, free WiFi, Buffet Breakfast and a comfortable private room.
  • Shymkent Hotel : Great location, free WiFi, has a swimming pool and apparently a great breakfast.

That were some of the highlights of Turkistan and some practical information for your visit! Most of all, enjoy your time in Turkistan and take in all the history and culture of the place.

The world’s ninth-biggest country is the most economically advanced of the ‘stans’, thanks to its abundant reserves of oil and most other valuable minerals. That money has transformed the capital Nur-Sultan, on the windswept northern steppe, into a 21st-century showpiece with a profusion of bold futuristic architecture. Travelers will find some fantastic restaurants and accommodation amongst the leafy avenues of Almaty too; its biggest city also boasts the chic ALZhiR Museum-Memorial Complex, glossy shopping centres and hedonistic nightlife. But it's beyond the cities that you'll find the greatest travel adventures, whether hiking in the high mountains and green valleys of the Tian Shan, searching for wildlife on the lake-dotted steppe, enjoying homespun hospitality in village guesthouses, or jolting across the western deserts to remote underground mosques.

Hoca Ahmet Yesevi Mosque in Turkistan

By Nylah Lee 26th September 2023

From Karavansaray to the Aziret Sultan Complex, Kazakh tour guide Daulet Meldekhanov shares five unmissable stops on a visit to the city of Turkistan.

Pressed against the borders of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, the southern Kazakh city of Turkistan (or Turkestan) is an ancient archaeological gem perched on the Eurasian Steppe. Fragments of Kazakhstani history are obscured within grand minarets and beneath sandy ruins. The mausoleums of 12th-century Sufi mystics soar into the sky, and colourful bazaars spread acres wide, dotting the rich downtown core with Kazakh art and cuisine.

THE SPECIALIST

From Shymkent to Turkistan, Daulet Meldekhanov has been guiding tourists through southern region of Kazakhstan since 2016.

Literally meaning “land of the Turks”, Turkistan was first settled as early as the 6th Century by former Turkic nomads who used it as a caravan stop along the Silk Road. The city once known as Shavgar and Yasī claimed its modern title in the 16th century, when it became the capital of the Kazakh Khanate until its Russian conquest in 1864. Today’s Turkistan is comprised of various groups of Turkic descendants, from Kazakhs to Uzbeks, which are bonded by an Islamic history so strong that the Cooperation Council of Turkic-Speaking States considers it  the spiritual capital of the Turkic world .

Daulet Meldekhanov has spent the past seven years as a guide for Silk Road tour operator  Advantour , leading customised guided tours designed to immerse travellers in Turkistan’s history and culture.

“Turkistan is such a unique city,” Meldekhanov said. “According to archaeological excavation, we [now believe] that there are more than 2,000 years of Turkistan.”

1. Best way to travel: Turkistan Station

The  Turkistan Railway Station  is a captivating site, known for its uniquely rounded archway and eye-catching mint-coloured accent walls. It was influenced by 20th-century Soviet constructivist architecture integrated with Kazakh tile, and connects to the southern stretch of the Orenburg-Tashkent Railroad, the piece of the vast Russian Trans-Caspian Railway network that traces the path of the Silk Road deep into Central Asia.

According to Meldekhanov, Turkistani Railways are some of the most authentic examples of Russian architecture combined with that of Kazakhstan, and visitors can catch a scenic ride throughout Turkistan and the surrounding cities of Kazakhstan.

The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi is an architectural marvel (Credit: Education Images/Getty Images)

The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi is an architectural marvel (Credit: Education Images/Getty Images)

Located within the Azret Sultan Museum, the  Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi  is an architectural marvel that was built between 1389 and 1404 and remains unfinished. It was constructed for and subsequently named after Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. This renowned poet, philosopher and mystic helped spread the Sufi branch of Islam throughout the Turkic-speaking world. Following Yasawi’s death in 1166, his resting placed served as sacred ground for Sufi Silk Road travellers.

“Here, we can admire more than 600 years of Muslim heritage,” Meldekhanov said. “We can see the original fragments of the walls and even some original decorations from [the] 14th Century.”

Inscribed on the  Unesco World Heritage list , the tiled mausoleum towers 38.7m high and is capped with a turquoise dome that’s the largest in Central Asia. Considered one of the best-preserved architectural feats from the Timurid Empire that ruled the area in the 14th Century, the 35-room mausoleum holds ancient Persian paintings, a carpeted mosque and intricate stonework mirroring that of the monument’s exterior. The structure was built near the conclusion of the Silk Road era, etching its 1,500-year architectural influence into its colourful mosaic tile.

“While much of the Silk Road has faded into history, the Khoja Ahmed Yasawi mausoleum stands as a main testament to its past glory,” said Murod Nazarov, Meldekhanov’s colleague at Advantours.

3. Best historic tour: The  Azret Sultan Museum

If the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi has history buffs itching for more, the surrounding  Azret Sultan Reserve-Museum  won’t disappoint. Stretching a staggering 1,235 acres and featuring a dizzying array of written, architectural and cultural artefacts, the museum was designed to help  popularise the national history of Kazakhstan . Given its size, it may take several trips to see the collection’s full breadth, but Meldekhanov recommends a few places to start.

Beneath the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi lies the  Hilvet , Yasawi’s hand-dug, semi-underground mosque that would become a cradle for Sufism. Yasawi’s private room – illuminated by streams of sunlight that penetrate its 4m depth – was meticulously crafted to sustain his secluded prayer routine.  Unesco  has dubbed the mosque a “second Mecca”, as it remains an important destination for Sufi pilgrims and is an awe-inspiring example of Kazakh architecture.

Another of the museum’s gems is its bathhouses. Eighty metres from the mausoleum and mosque, visitors can enter the brick walls of the east bathhouse that dates to 1580-1590. Until as recently as 1979, the structure was a functioning hot-water bath system where visitors could cleanse before reaching the central mausoleum. Although water no longer runs through it, the bathhouse still stands as an exhibit in the museum.

Meldekhanov also recommends admiring the walls of the Chillakhana, a dome-shaped brick structure that once held sacred rituals and can only be accessed with a local guide.  The Mausoleum of Rabiya Sultan Begim , specially built for descendants of Turkic conqueror Timurlane, is another World Heritage site that Meldekhanov believes is worth a stop.

4. Best entertainment experience: The Karavansaray Complex

While sometimes called the “Kazakh Venice” by locals for its romantic canal, the city’s  Karavansaray  complex offers much more than moonlit gondola tours.

Located on Bekzat Sattarkhanov Avenue, a strip named for  the late Kazakh Olympic boxer , Karavansaray is a five-star hotel, an epicentre of cultural pride and hospitality and a world of Turkistani entertainment all in one. With a variety of shows and entertainment packages available, Meldekhanov urges guests to stay for the night-time boat parade re-enacting the tragic saga of  Kyz-Zhibek and Tolgen , a story that he says is the Kazakh equivalent of Romeo and Juliet.

“We also have a very interesting show programme in the Karavansary complex, which is the Flying Theatre,” said Meldekhanov. “[During this show], you are [like a] phoenix bird flying above Kazakhstan like a rocket. The show has eight dimensions, so without any glasses, you can see, you can, feel, smell and breathe in everything.”

This show takes place inside Samruk Flying Theatre, a massive, golden egg-shaped building perched atop a “nest”. The performance immerses guests in a multidimensional journey through several eras of Kazakh history, including a simulated trip through the Silk Road.

Children are also welcome to join in the Karavansaray by taking a pony ride, navigating the rope course and catching air in the trampoline park.

5. Best for Kazakh cuisine: Kuanysh Bazaar

Whether it’s for a refreshing drink, a satisfying meal or an ornate souvenir, Meldekhanov encourages travellers to stop at one of Turkistan’s many bazaars. “You can find a wide variety of food, fresh fruits, vegetables, outfits and much more” at each of these markets, Meldekhanov said, but he recommends starting at  Kuanysh Bazaar .

Just a 10 minute drive from the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, this open-air market offers a wealth of Kazakh art and food. Masterfully embroidered textiles and unique pottery line the booths of local vendors, and the mouth-watering aromas of stews and roasts fill the air, reflecting the Kazakh affinity for meat.

“We joke that [Kazakhstan] takes second place for [meat consumption], and everybody asks who is the first,” said Meldekhanov. “It’s the wolf!”

Meldekhanov recommends searching the market for his personal favourite dish,  beshbarmak , which is made of dough (typically egg noodles), onion and finely chopped boiled meat (traditionally horse). Derived from the Kazakh phrase meaning “five fingers” – an ode to the nomads who traditionally ate with their hands – beshbarmak combines the pride and history of Kazakhstan in a single dish. According to Meldekhanov, even the consumption of horse meat serves as a reminder that the people of Kazakhstan were the first to domesticate the animal.

"Spiritual Capital in Turkistan"

Turkistan tourism.

Turkistan, located in a region with the same name, is a city and the administrative center of Turkistan Region of Kazakhstan. It is located in the southern part of Kazakhstan near the Syr Darya River, approximately 160 kilometers north of the border with Uzbekistan.

Turkistan's most important historical and cultural site is the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Due to his profound influence and to commemorate his legacy, the city transformed into a major center for spiritual development and Islamic learning for the people of the Kazakh steppes.  In the 1390s, Timur, the Turco-Mongol leader and founder of the Timurid dynasty, built a remarkable domed mausoleum over Yassawi's burial site. Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi stands as one of Kazakhstan's remarkable architectural landmarks.  The city boasts some more important historic sites, including an ancient bathhouse and four mausoleums. One of these mausoleums honors Rabiya Sultan Begim, who was Timur's great-granddaughter. The other three mausoleums are dedicated to Kazakh khans, showing their significance in the region's history.

Sultan Han, Silk Road, Turkey

Last Updated on May 7, 2019

In the middle of the  flat, flat plain  between  Konya  and  Aksaray , at a lonely point on the ancient  Silk Road ,  Seljuk Turkish  Sultan Alaettin Keykubad I built a caravanserai, or caravan way-station between 1229 and 1236.

It was named, appropriately, the  Sultan Han  ( han meaning caravanserai).

This  truck-stop-for-camels  was no doubt impressive, but it was in 1278 after a  fire  had damaged the original building that the great caravanserai took its present shape. It is the largest  Seljuk caravanserai  in Turkey, and well worth a stop  to see if you are traveling between  Aksaray  (or  Cappadocia ) and  Konya .

In the last half-century, the little village that grew up around the  Sultan Han  has grown into a  town (Sultanhanı) with basic services such as shops, fuel stations, restaurants, tea houses, etc. It is 42 km (26 miles, 45 minutes) west of  Aksaray , and 110 km (68 miles, 1-3/4 hours) east of  Konya .

The  Sultan Han  is a prime example of the  Seljuk Turkish caravanserai  with its lofty, elaborately-worked  portal framed by utterly plain but massive  walls ; its stone-paved  courtyard  surrounded with rooms that served as treasury, refectory, hamam, repair shops and sleeping quarters.

The design, as always, is elegant in its simplicity.

At the center of the courtyard is a  mescit (small mosque) raised above the tumult of animals and men. You can ascend to the mescit by either side of the twin staircase on the west side. The steps are huge.

To the right as you enter is a  portico  for storage of goods and for sleeping in warmer weather.

Beyond the courtyard is the huge  enclosed hall  of the caravanserai with its nave and side aisles supported by four rows of eight pillars and a forest of arches. A  dome  or  lantern  at the center of the nave lets in light and pigeons.

The  Sultan Han  has been repaired and restored numerous times in its eight centuries of existence, most recently within the past half century.

To visit the Sultan Han, turn off the Aksaray-Konya highway and enter the town of Sultanhani. Soon you’ll see the caravanserai hulking at its center. The Sultan Han is supposedly open from 09:00 am to 18:30 (6:30 pm), for  TL 5, but you may find it open earlier or later, depending on the guardian.
