Taylor Swift Eras Tour Reputation Era via Taylor Swift Productions and Silent House Productions

The Eras Tour Was Taylor Swift’s Biggest Outing Yet, But It Was Far From Her First

Image of Lauren Coates

City by city, song by song, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour has quickly become of the highest-grossing (and buzziest) tours in music history. Spanning the entire length of Swift’s discography, Taylor honors each of her previous musical/aesthetic “eras” with a dedicated section on her setlist, allowing fans to relive the feeling of each album, if only for a moment.

But while the Eras Tour brings each album together on one mega-tour, it’s hardly the first time Taylor has been around, or even the first time she’s embarked on a stadium tour. From humble beginnings to sold-out shows across the globe, here’s a breakdown of all of Taylor Swift’s tours, in chronological order.

Fearless Tour

As most Swifties know, Taylor’s first album was a self-titled country pop record with singles like “Teardrops on My Guitar,” “Our Song,” and “Tim McGraw.” Taylor did tour during the release of Taylor Swift, but not as a headliner—she supported her first album by performing as an opening act for larger artists at the time like Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Faith Hill, and Keith Urban.

But while Taylor Swift was her first album, it wasn’t her first tour—that honor belongs to the Fearless Tour, which kicked off in April 2009 and ran through July 2010. The tour played a total of 105 shows (mostly across North America) including limited stops in Asia, Europe, and Australia. Kellie Pickler joined Taylor as an opening act, with artists like then-boyfriend John Mayer, Katy Perry, and Faith Hill appearing at certain performances as surprise guests. Though the tour didn’t get a concert film, Taylor Swift: Journey to Fearless was released as a 3-episode docuseries, documenting the behind-the-scenes of the tour.

Speak Now World Tour

Taylor’s first proper world tour, the Speak Now World Tour , began in February 2011 and featured a total of 111 performances, including seven in Asia and 12 in Europe. In addition to being her first world tour, Speak Now was also Taylor’s first stadium tour and featured more extensive set pieces, choreography, and costuming than the Fearless tour. Speak Now ‘s openers included NeedToBreathe, Hunter Hayes, and Hot Chelle Rae, and it was the first Taylor tour attended by yours truly. A concert film, Taylor Swift: Speak Now World Tour Live , was recorded to accompany the tour.

The Red Tour

Two years later, Taylor was back on the road with the Red Tour, which kicked off in March of 2013 and ran through June of 2014, with a total of 86 performances across the globe. In addition to continuing to bump up the tour’s production value through costuming, choreography, and set design, the Red tour also featured the introduction of surprise songs, which changed night-to-night. Certain Red tour dates also featured Taylor bringing out a surprise guest and singing one of their songs as a duet. Highlights of Red tour guests included Taylor singing “Jenny From the Block” with Jennifer Lopez, “You’re So Vain” with Carly Simon, and “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark” with Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump.

Unlike previous installments, there was no concert film version of the Red tour.

The 1989 World Tour

Following Red was the 1989 World Tour, beginning in May 2015 and ending December of the same year for a total of 85 shows. The 1989 World Tour featured the return of the Surprise Songs mechanic, and hosted Vance Joy, Shawn Mendes, Rae Morris, and Haim as opening acts. Haim would also go on to return as an opening act for the Eras Tour, as well as guest star in the Bejeweled music video and feature on an evermore track.

One of the tour stops in Sydney was recorded for a concert film version of the tour called The 1989 World Tour Live —prior to the Eras Tour, that Sydney performance held the record for Swift’s most-attended performance, with 75,980 Swifties in attendance.

Reputation Stadium Tour

Though Taylor had previously performed at plenty of stadiums on tour, the Reputation Stadium Tour was Swift’s first all-stadium tour, playing May through November of 2018 for a total of 53 shows—her shortest tour to date. Openers for reputation included Camila Cabello, Charli XCX, and Broods, some of whom would join Taylor during the set for “Shake it Off.” As with her previous tours, reputation featured surprise songs at each show and a number of surprise guests at certain performances, this time including Troye Sivan, Selena Gomez, and Niall Horan.

A performance in Arlington was recorded for a concert film called Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour , which was released by (but recently taken off of) Netflix. Fans speculate that reputation leaving Netflix could be related to the fact that Taylor has yet to re-record her masters for reputation .

A sixth tour, Lover Fest, was originally scheduled for April through August of 2020, but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour would’ve featured Swift’s then-first performance in Brazil, and would also have been the first time Swift’s tour dates included stops at previously organized festivals. Because there was no tour, there’s no Lover concert film, but Swift did release City of Lover , a recording of a one-off concert in Paris, as a tv special in May of 2020.

The Eras Tour

Last but certainly not least is, of course, The Eras Tour , which is currently ongoing and kicked off in March of 2023. We’ve previously done a full breakdown of the Eras setlist, which features glimpses into all of Swift’s previous albums, but focuses most heavily on those she was unable to tour because of COVID— Lover, folklore, evermore, and Midnights. A concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour , was released in theaters and is currently available to rent on streaming.

Why 2016 Was the Year the World Turned on Taylor Swift

Why 2016 Was the Year the World Turned on Taylor Swift

When 2016 started, Taylor Swift was arguably at an all-time career high. She had just wrapped the EPIC 1989 world tour, and, after treating the entire tour crew to an Australian vacation as a thank you, she was enjoying some much-deserved downtime.

When she wasn’t completely vegging out at home with her beloved cats , she was enjoying dinners out with her then-boo Calvin Harris (or at least attempting to… ), and rumors about a potential engagement were heating up.

In February, when Kanye West released The Life of Pablo , the lyrics to the song “Famous” caused a ton of controversy. “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that b***h famous,” he rapped, while Taylor remained quiet on the matter as her ever-strong squad rushed to have her back . Kanye (and Kim Kardashian) always maintained that Taylor had given ‘Ye her blessing to use the lyrics.

3rd thing I called Taylor and had a hour long convo with her about the line and she thought it was funny and gave her blessings — KANYE WEST (@kanyewest) February 12, 2016

Then, a few days later at the Grammys, Taylor used her Album of the Year acceptance speech to not only point out that she was the first woman to ever win two Album of the Year Grammys, but to not-so-subtly fire back at Kanye .

“I want to say to the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame,” she said, immediately inspiring even the likes of Reese Witherspoon to jump to their feet (er, tweets) in praise. “But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you will look around and you will know it was you and the people who love you who put you there, and that will be the greatest feeling in the world.”

Tay was on fire, despite her not performing or releasing any new music. Everyone was obsessed with her and Calvin’s adorable relationship, watching them happily celebrate their one-year anniversary and party at Coachella . Her edgy new bleached locks turned heads on her Vogue cover and at the Met Gala . And she was obviously the best bridesmaid ever at her childhood BFF’s wedding.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Taylor and Calvin broke up , and yikes, did it get messy at times . Then seemingly out of nowhere AGAIN, just a few weeks after the breakup, Taylor was dating Tom Hiddleston . This only reignited the narrative that Taylor cycled through relationships for publicity as they suited different arcs in her career. Hiddleswift were suddenly EVERYWHERE in the media (guilty!); conspiracy theories for this strange new relationship started to fly . It seemed contrived, and TBH, people were getting a little bit tired of all Taylor, all the time. The tides were turning, and fast.

And this is when it all unravelled. One of the conspiracies about #Hiddleswift was that the relationship was a distraction for something Taylor knew was coming and wanted to sweep under the carpet: #ReceiptGate.

do u guys follow me on snap chat? u really should ;-) — Kim Kardashian West (@KimKardashian) July 18, 2016

In mid-July, Kim Kardashian used her Snapchat to release part of the phone call between Taylor and Kanye where they discussed the “Famous” lyrics. Taylor said that while she and Kanye had discussed the song, she actually hadn’t agreed to letting Kanye call her a b***h. She released a statement asking to be “excluded from this narrative,” and then she sort of just… disappeared.

While most of Taylor’s loyal squad stood by her , even one of her BFFs, Selena Gomez, remained strangely quiet and seemingly confused about the whole thing. Tom and Taylor slinked out of the public eye and were soon officially over . And so, it seemed, was the world’s love affair with T Swift.

Since then, she has only occasionally taken to social media to wish some of her besties happy birthdays, spend low-key time with them or make rare public appearances to support them at events.

Slowly, through months out of the spotlight, it seems like Tay has been inching back to being on the world’s good side. She’s been dropping hints that a return to her country roots could be on the way, and although the jury is out over how adopting a hip-hop sound would fare, a collaboration with Drake definitely has people intrigued.

Earlier this month, Taylor released her first new music in over two years. Teaming up with Zayn, the two did a duet for the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack , and while the initial reaction was among the “ no one asked for this! ” variety, the song immediately went to #1 on iTunes, meaning that as long as Taylor sticks to the music, the people will listen.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Taylor Swift changed her story about discussing the “Famous” lyrics with Kanye West. Swift’s publicist released a statement to Billboard magazine on the day of West’s song release that read: “Kanye did not call for approval, but to ask Taylor to release his single ‘Famous’ on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message. Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, “I made that bitch famous.’”

Taylor Swift Wows Austin Crowd at Only 2016 Concert

By Chad Swiatecki

Chad Swiatecki

Scattered in the crowd at Taylor Swift ‘s only concert performance of 2016 were plenty of signs from fans attesting to how far they’d traveled to be in Austin on Saturday night. Plenty belonged to residents of far eastern or Pacific states, but the one that verified a trip from Honduras (approx. distance: 1,270 miles) to see Swift live was a pretty stark testament to the level of star power in play.

What the estimated 80,000 fans gathered from all compass points at the Circuit of The Americas race track got was an emphatic statement of why Swift is the recipient of such loyalty from fans all over the globe.

From the moment Swift emerged from jets of colored fog to the drum snap of “New Romantics,” she commanded the huge festival-sized stage in front of her and projected every stalking step, shimmy and perfectly timed wink or hair flip out to the tens of thousands of fans gathered acres away on lawn seating.

Early on Swift acknowledged that the Austin show was her only 2016 show after spending much of the year prior on the world-spanning tour in support of the 1989 album, and that she was looking forward to reconnecting with fans despite recovering from a cold that could have some impact on her vocals.

Taylor Swift, Live Review

However, she persevered throughout much the night, even delivering an extra oomph whenever a song needed an emotional blast and a real soaring vocal.

That was on display for her turn with an acoustic guitar for early-career material “You Belong To Me,” and “Fifteen,” sharing with the audience how much she’s enjoyed her decade-plus of opening her diary and pouring her emotions and romantic mishaps out in front of them.

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Swift’s past history of October even-year releases had many speculating that Saturday’s show might feature new material as a way to build toward her next artistic move, but she stuck to her well-known catalog instead. The only exception came during her three-song turn behind a sparkling white grand piano when she delivered her first-ever live performance of “This Is What You Came For,” the hit she helped pen for her ex beau Calvin Harris and Rihanna.

Now 10 years and a whole lot of well-publicized breakups into her career, Swift appeared to have not just moved on from those stumbles but taken full ownership of them, turning songs like “Blank Space” and “I Knew You Were Trouble” into anthems of experience from a woman proud to be living life fearlessly.

Taylor Swift, Live Review

By the time the closing fireworks on the undeniable dance party of “Shake It Off” signaled the night’s close 80 minutes later, Swift bid farewell as a smiling and thankful conquering hero. Saturday’s show might have been her sole public concert for the entire year, but with a crowd that ranks as one of her largest ever, it showed no drop off or rust from a star determined to remain one of the biggest names in music for a long time to come.

While every year seems larger than life for Taylor Swift, 2016 just seems to take the cake.

Though she didn't drop a new album like expected, the 27-year-old singer definitely had a landmark year, which included three GRAMMYs, two boyfriends, and one super-sized feud.

In honor of her favorite number, here are Swift's 13 biggest moments of 2016:

Out of the Woods

Swift rang in 2016 with a bang, dropping her new music video for "Out of the Woods" -- a song that is presumably about ex-boyfriend Harry Styles. Just a few weeks later, the singer would open the GRAMMYs with the breakup song, bringing us to No. 2.

Days after Kanye West dropped his controversial  "Famous" track, in which he rapped "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex, I made that b**ch famous," the "Shake It Off" singer did anything but shake it off, making the GRAMMYs the perfect stage for her dig against the rapper.

Swift laid low for most of the night, arriving with BFF Selena Gomez, opening the awards show with her song, "Out of the Woods," and leaving all of us to believe she simply wasn't going to address the elephant in the room -- until she called out the rapper (though not by name) during her Album of the Year  acceptance speech for 1989.

"As the first woman to win Album of the Year twice, I want to say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments and your fame," said Swift, who took home two other GRAMMYs that night.

"But if you just focus on the work and you don't let those people sidetrack you, some day when you get where you're going, you'll look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there and that will be the greatest feeling in the world," she concluded.

Swift switched up her look in April, debuting edgy platinum blonde locks on the  cover of Vogue -- and opening up about her then-boyfriend Calvin Harris and her feud with Kanye West.

"I'm in a magical relationship right now. And of course I want it to be ours, and low-key," she shared. "This is the one thing that's been mine about my personal life."

"I think the world is so bored with the saga," Swift said of West. "I don't want to add anything to it, because then there's just more."

First Coachella

Swift followed her "magical relationship" with Harris to Coachella that same month -- her first time at the famous Indio, California, music festival.

"BLEACHELLA," she captioned a sunny snap of herself on Instagram, before cheering on Harris, who headlined the festival this year.

Met Gala Boogie

Swift kept her platinum 'do for another month while co-chairing the Met Gala, where she narrowly escaped a run-in with Kanye West… and famously got down  with her soon-to-be new beau Tom Hiddleston.

Calvin Harris Split

By June 1, the "New Romantics" singer found herself without romance, as she and Harris  went their separate ways. The couple celebrated their one-year anniversary in March, and marked the occasion with a steamy beach getaway shortly after, but they couldn't make paradise last.

While sources at the time claimed that the relationship just didn't work out, the months to come would tell a slightly different story.

Kiss on the Beach

It was the kiss seen 'round the world! Two weeks after her breakup from Harris, Swift seemed to have found another man in Hiddleston, her Met Gala dance partner. The 1989 singer was photographed getting hot and heavy with The Night Manager star outside her Rhode Island mansion, before the two embarked on a whirlwind romance and international love tour.

Fourth of July

The couple couldn't keep their hands off each other during her annual Fourth of July bash in Rhode Island. In addition to her British beau, Swift also hosted Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, Cara Delevingne, Uzo Aduba and Ruby Rose. How's that for a star-studded party?

This Is What You Came For

Swift's songwriting alias, Nils Sjoberg, was revealed on July 13, when her rep confirmed to ET that it was Swift who helped write Harris' hit song, "This Is What You Came For." But drama followd Swift's big reveal, as Harris took to Twitter to unleash a tirade against the singer for trying to manipulate the media.

"I know you're off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy ETC but I'm not that guy, sorry. I won't allow it," he said in one scathing tweet.

Kanye Feud 2.0

The infamous "Taylor Tapes"! Kim Kardashian dropped one hell of a bombshell on July 17 when she released portions of a phone call between West and Swift, during which the singer seemingly approved West's song, "Famous."

Of course, Swift didn't go down without a fight, posting her own response to the video on Instagram, noting that the lyric she had issue with was the word "b**ch," which wasn't shown in Kardashian's clip. "I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative, one that I have never asked to be a part of, since 2009," she wrote.

Hiddlesplit

After a drama-filled summer, ET confirmed in September that Swift and Hiddleston had broken up. "It was an amicable split," a source told ET at the time.

First Concert of the Year

Swift performed her first concert in over a year in October, making headlines when she performed the song she wrote for Harris, "This Is What You Came For."

The GRAMMY winner delivered hit after hit during her one-night-only performance at the Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, but her performance of the Harris song just couldn't be ignored.

"I've never played this song live before, but you know it," she said to the crowd. "Maybe you could sing along, and then I could get to know what that feels like to hear it sung back to me."

Fifty Shades Darker

While she didn't drop a surprise album, T.Swift released new music just before the end of 2016. The singer collaborated with her bestie Gigi Hadid's boyfriend Zayn Malik on the new track , "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" for the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel, Fifty Shades Darker.

With a few days left of 2016, here's hoping we'll get one more Swiftmas gift before the new year. After all, she's got a lot of material to work with.

Taylor performing at the USGP (2016)

On October 22, 2016, in a tightly packed 80-minute set that covered all her hits to date and a host of back catalog favorites, Taylor deftly demonstrated exactly why she’s one of the biggest stars of her generation; with fantastic vocal chops, perfectly choreographed stage routines that were artfully crafted to convey a sense of spontaneity and an uncanny knack for transmitting intimacy across a massive crowd, she wowed the 80'000 fans in attendance. This was her only performance of 2016, and her first show since her “ 1989 World Tour " had  wrapped in December 2015 - and it was ecstatically received.

“Oh hi, Austin, Texas…Welcome to F1 weekend,” Swift said, addressing the screaming masses with casual charm after opening with “New Romantics.” Backed by a five piece band and four backup singers, she segued into “22” unleashing the first of several increasingly explosive fireworks displays that would augment her set. Then she dropped a bombastic rendition of “Blank Space” that began with a surprisingly lovely harmonized intro and an enthusiastic audience singalong.

She encouraged the audience to “Let go of anything that’s stressing us, sing at the top of our lungs and scream when we need to scream,” and the crowd happily obliged throughout the show.

Swift said the crowd for the show numbered 80'000 and gazing out across the massive throng that filled the field in the middle of the track, the figure seemed entirely plausible. Unlike past years when the "Formula One" musical entertainment had been a side attraction to the main event, many fans clearly shelled out for $150 three-day race passes specifically to see Swift. (There were no single-day Saturday general admission tickets sold.) Around 3:30 p.m., as the day’s race activities were beginning to wrap up, distinctively Swiftian crowds, loaded with young girls aplenty, were boarding shuttle buses headed toward the track.

The process of converting the grounds from racetrack to concert venue took somewhat longer than anticipated, and the gate to enter the lawn in front of the Superstage where Swift performed opened 35 minutes late. The crowd became restless and a demanding chant, “Taylor! Taylor! Taylor!” broke out at the front of the line shortly before the gates opened.

Once the lawn section started to fill out, families who opted to spread blankets in the middle to back section of the lawn fared better than those who attempted to navigate the crush of people in the front section where sight lines and breathing room were both tough to come by.

The stage was flanked by a pair of massive screens with a third screen as the backdrop. Visual effects on the screens were relatively minimal throughout the show. Primarily, they served a practical purpose: to transmit the detailed gestures and expressions Swift uses to conjure the many sides of her character to the huge crowd. The secret to Swift’s star power rests in how effectively she draws the audience in, with blown kisses and conspiratorial winks and sincere declarations about exactly how meaningful it is to spend her life “opening her journal and letting you read it.”

At one point, she strapped on an acoustic guitar and dipped into her back catalog, playing songs she said she usually leaves off her setlist including one of her earliest hits “You Belong With Me.” Later she sat at the sparkliest piano in the world for a suite showcasing her raw talent as a musician and songwriter that included passionate renditions of “Sparks Fly” and “Enchanted.”

She mashed up “We Are Never Getting Back Together” and “Bad Blood” in a furious one-two punch that made you shudder for anyone forced to face her withering wrath, but she saved the best message for her haters for the end.

“Do you want to dance?” she asked the audience, before taking the set out with an exhilarating rendition of “Shake It Off” accompanied by an astounding fireworks display that literally lit the night on fire.

There was no surprise album drop, no special guests and no encore, but it didn’t matter. The mood was ebullient as thousands made the long slog across the racetrack to the fleet of shuttles waiting to efficiently ferry them home.

How 2016 Changed Taylor Swift Forever

taylor swift tour 2016

For as long as I've followed celebrity culture, I've cared about Taylor Swift . I'm not a singer, and my foray into songwriting lasted about two weeks during seventh grade, but like countless others, I'm drawn to Swift as an artist and a celebrity. For years, the image she'd created for herself — that of a savvy, empowered feminist in shrewd control of her image — was both fascinating and inspiring. Few other stars, and even fewer women, have had the same power over their audiences as Swift. But over the course of this past year, her constant need to be in control started seeming not like a strength, but a fatal flaw. And instead of fans like myself being able to root for Swift's success, we found ourselves feeling frustrated with and embarrassed for a person intent on playing the victim and incapable of owning up to her mistakes.

This would all come later in the year, though. Back in January, 2016 actually seemed poised to be a relatively quiet year for Swift. The worldwide tour for her album 1989 had ended back in December, and her relationship with Calvin Harris was several calm, scandal-free months in. The biggest headlines she nabbed were about hangouts with BFF Selena Gomez and visits to her new baby godson. Yet, just a few weeks later, that would all change. When Swift took the stage at Feb. 15's Grammy Awards and called out Kanye West for that "Famous" shout-out heard 'round the world, she started a chain of events that, over the course of the year, would make it impossible for fans to support her.

At the time, however, the star's appearance at the show, just days after West rapped "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / I made that b*tch famous" on The Life of Pablo , seemed simply like yet another display of her strength and poise in the face of criticism. West, after all, was not only wrong for calling Swift a "b*tch," but he'd also allegedly used her name in the song without her permission. Swift's rep alleged in a statement that West "did not call for approval, but to ask Taylor to release his single ‘Famous’ on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message. Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, ‘I made that Bitch' famous.’”

Immediately after "Famous" was released, both Swift's star-studded friend group and countless fans came to her defense, condemning West for the offensive lyric and reminding everyone that Swift didn't owe her fame to anyone but herself. So when the star used her Grammys acceptance speech for winning Album of the Year to call out West for undermining her success, it was deemed a feminist victory and a display of her fortitude. As someone who'd supported her throughout her oft-criticized career, it was hard not to feel proud of Swift during that speech; despite unfair attacks that cut at her core, I was so impressed with how she was standing tall and empowering her countless female fans to follow suit.

Slowly, though, things began to unravel. First, there was the Kesha situation. In the midst of the singer's legal battle against the producer Dr. Luke, many stars, like Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande, publicly showed their support for Kesha and rallied others to do the same. Swift, however, stayed silent , which some fans read as a choice to keep her clean image separate from the controversial story. For many people like myself, Swift's inaction was immensely frustrating. Here was a hugely powerful star refusing to come out in support of a peer in need. Yet soon, this disappointment largely vanished, as it was revealed that Swift had donated $250,000 toward Kesha's legal costs . Whether due to the backlash or not, the star's actions satisfied, and shut up, most critics, and appeased her fans who'd hoped she'd use her power to help others with less.

After that, the next few months were relatively scandal-free for Swift. She released "New Romantics," a popular new single. She celebrated her one-year anniversary with Harris. She even earned a "Taylor Swift Award" from Broadcast Music, Inc. , an honor celebrating how she'd "transformed pop culture through her songs, artistry and indomitable spirit." In April, she announced that she would be taking a break from music , and the general reaction was a mix of sadness and understanding. After all, we reasoned, someone as busy and accomplished as Swift certainly deserved some time off.

In May, however, two events occurred that would change how we viewed Swift. First, there was the release of "This Is What You Came For," a song purportedly written by Harris. At the time, Swift wasn't thought to have any involvement other than possibly inspiring the lyrics , but months later, it would be revealed through a series of angry tweets that she'd actually ghostwritten the song and wanted credit for its creation. Secondly, there was the 2016 Met Gala, during which Swift, still dating Harris, was spotted dancing with the actor Tom Hiddleston . The duo's adorable shenanigans were seen as just that: nothing more than innocent fun between two clearly platonic friends. Yet when, less than a month later, Swift and Hiddleston would be revealed as a couple, that night would be viewed in a different, less favorable light.

When those photos of Swift and Hiddleston kissing on the beach came out in early June, it marked the biggest change in Swift's image yet. At first, none of us knew what to think. After all, it wasn't even clear for a while if the photos were real, let alone if they signified that the star had moved on from her recent breakup with Harris — a split handled, at least publicly, with maturity and grace — and toward Hiddleston. But while even today, details of the pair's relationship are still murky, the weeks following those photos' release made one thing all too clear: Swift's apparent intentions, and the narrative she'd created, had become more complicated than any of us fans could've predicted.

All summer long, Swift supporters like myself waffled between defending the star from slut-shaming and questioning what was going in her mind. Her relationship with Hiddleston just didn't make sense. Even if the two were truly in love, Swift wasn't going about in the way she'd handled her previous romances. Instead of focusing on privacy and keeping things low-key, the star was flaunting her new relationship, taking Hiddleston on beach trips, European adventures, and Fourth of July celebrations featuring an "I <3 T.S." T-shirt . It all felt out of character for Swift, someone so in control of her image that letting the public create her story and spread countless rumors just didn't make sense. And as a fan, it was hard to watch. How could someone as self-possessed as her sit back while her public image got torn to shreds?

Things only got more complicated from there. In July, it was revealed that Swift was behind Harris' "This is What You Came For," having used a pseudonym to write the hit song. In a series of tweets, Harris criticized his ex-girlfriend for trying to "bury" him like Katy Perry (her most famous "enemy") and take credit the song in order to make him look bad (Harris had been reportedly calling out Swift in Snapchats). At this, Swift's critics went wild, labeling the star a "snake" for her actions — a title that came with a corresponding emoji and became used to troll her all year long — and deeming her relationship with Hiddleston a media-courting lie.

Yet even with the news about the song, it was still possible for fans to defend Swift's honor. So she wanted credit for a track she wrote — was that so bad? So she was flaunting her new relationship — didn't she deserve to have fun? The criticism felt based in sexism, a ridiculous need by the public to tear Swift apart for dating freely and having a nice time. As I wrote in my own "The Taylor Swift Takedown Needs To Stop & Here's Why" essay back in July, "Not only is it simply offensive, but it goes against everything Swift has supposedly taught us throughout her career — that a woman's worth is not about who she dates or how long the romance lasts."

Even if we didn't fully understand Swift's motives during this time, that didn't mean the criticism was warranted. More than anyone, she understood the importance of being in front of one's own narrative. Everything she said and did, even if it confused us, had to be part of a bigger plan to tell her story exactly the way she wanted it to be told. Otherwise, fans like myself would have to admit that Swift wasn't the person that, for years, we'd all thought she was.

taylor swift tour 2016

But in mid-July, the actions of one Kim Kardashian shattered any illusions we had left. In that "Famous" call, shared on Snapchat by Kardashian to her millions of followers, it became clear that Swift wasn't nearly as in control of her story as we'd thought. Despite what she'd said in that Grammys speech and in her now-infamous "I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative " note, it appears in the Snapchat video (which may not have shown the entire conversation) that she'd actually approved of most, if not all, of West's "Famous" shout-out. And so what seemed to many fans months earlier like an empowering, honest talk about not letting others undermine one's success was now being perceived by many as a deceptive way of making herself look like a victim, and thus the hero of her story.

For longtime fans of Swift who, up until this point, had supported her through thick and thin, the "Famous" call came as a massive blow. It's not that we'd denied she was capable of manipulation; it's that until now, that skill had seemed like an asset, not a character flaw. For years, Swift's ability to take full control of her story and rise above her critics seemed like a wise way of staying in power, the reason she'd achieved such massive success. Now, though, Swift's incessant need to construct her narrative only seemed to show her weakness — and no matter what the truth of her many disputes are, one thing seems to be clear: that she puts maintaining her own narrative first.

taylor swift tour 2016

To realize that there was nothing defensible about Swift's actions was crushing for those of us who'd supported her for so long. If she'd responded to the Snapchat reveal with a humble, mature statement apologizing for and owning up to her actions, at least we would be comforted in knowing that she was seemingly learning from her mistakes and growing up. But instead, the statement Swift released was purely defensive, a way to deflect more blame and ignore reality rather than take responsibility for her actions. It hurt to realize that even in this career-defining situation, Swift couldn't rise to actually become the person she'd long pretended to be.

In order to regain the respect she'd lost from us, Swift would've needed to spend the following months changing her image to that of a humble, honest person who screwed up, but was keen on growing up too. Instead, nothing Swift has publicly done in the time since that Snapchat has shown she has any intention on changing, and it's hugely disappointing to see. At least publicly, she hasn't apologized to West, Harris, or anyone else. She hasn't spoken in interviews or on social media about wanting to change her ways or rid herself of the "victim" narrative once and for all. And she's continued to stay silent about issues that matter, rightfully earning criticism for being one of the few high-profile stars to not post on social media — until the absolute last minute — about the importance of voting in the presidential election .

That's not to say that there was nothing to praise about Swift in recent months. Her breakup with Hiddleston warranted some sadness, and her good deeds, like her hospital donation in the name of Jaime King's son and contribution to a fan's funeral costs , were commendable. On the 10-year anniversary of her debut album, Taylor Swift , the star posted a thank-you to fans that'd make even her biggest critic crack a nostalgia-induced smile. And she even released new music , which, whether or not it was the goal, momentarily distracted the public from her personal life.

But until she owns up to her actions — and it's looking unlikely that she ever will — it will be impossible for us fans to see her in the same light as we did just 12 months ago. For years, Swift made it her mission to be the most in-control celebrity in Hollywood, but the moment that ability slipped out of her hands, she froze. I, and so many others, have supported her through every controversy and every criticism, but the events of 2016 have proven to be the breaking point. It was one thing to root for her when the story Swift worked so hard to control was one of empowerment. But now, that story is simply one of stubbornness, a refusal to admit her mistakes and grow into the person we all, for years, had thought she already was.

Editor's Note: This article previously left out Swift's rep's statement on the Kim Kardashian "Famous" video and incorrectly implied that there is no dispute over the video's apparent meaning.

The Year in Taylor Swift

The Calvin Harris fallout. Hiddleswift. The nuclear Kimye feud.

Hair, Head, Hairstyle, Style, Collage, Fashion, Step cutting, Blond, Hair coloring, Makeover,

Today, Taylor Swift turns 27—and will likely document her squad-filled (or cat-filled) celebrations on social media for the world to see. This was a big year in the life of T.Swift: There was no new album, but there were two breakups, new friends (Blake Lively! Dakota Johnson!), multiple makeovers, three ongoing feuds, and one nuclear Snapchat receipt blowout.

So, in honor of her birthday, here's a month by month recap of the year in Swift. You know some of this will make it onto her next (inevitable) best-selling album.

Swift started the year fresh off the 1989 tour. She and her boyfriend Calvin Harris were still going strong after getting together in March 2015.

  • Swift releases "Out of the Woods" on New Year's Eve night. It has lots of Harry Styles references :
  • Swift releases a very Taylor Swift clothing line in China.
  • She goes out to dinner with Harris on January 12, and a kid crashes their date. His post goes viral:
  • She celebrates her godson Leo Thames' six-month birthday :

This is when the Kimye feud gets reignited, and the Katy Perry feud begins to thaw.

  • Swift's ex Harry Styles starts off the month by tweeting a reference to her and her song "22" on his 22nd birthday. Some call it shade; some call it a peace declaration. Styles doesn't say much more, but his tweet becomes the second-most retweeted of the year :

Text, Font, Azure, Aqua, Electric blue, Screenshot, Web page, Multimedia, Brand, Website,

  • Kanye West releases "Famous" during his Yeezy Season 3 fashion show on February 11, four days before the Grammys. The lyrics "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/I made that bitch famous" shock everyone.
  • Austin Swift, Taylor's brother, immediately trashes his Yeezy shoes in response, in case there was any doubt how the Swift family feels about it:
  • Swift's publicist releases the following statement to BuzzFeed News that night:
Kanye did not call for approval, but to ask Taylor to release his single "Famous" on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message. Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, "I made that bitch famous."
  • West goes on a Twitter rant on Feb. 12 to maintain again that Swift approved the lyrics, despite her rep denying it:

Text, Orange, Colorfulness, Line, Amber, Font, Parallel, Screenshot, Number, Circle,

This all comes back to haunt Swift in July, when Kim Kardashian gets involved.

  • In other feud news, Katy Perry publicly invites Swift to her Spotify pre-Grammys party the Saturday before the show. Apple Music spokesperson Swift— who waged a war against Spotify and free streaming services in 2014 —does not go, but it's an olive branch! (Maybe!)
  • At the Grammys on Feb. 15, Swift takes Selena Gomez as her date (instead of Harris, who she never walks the red carpet with) and debuts a bob :

Clothing, Face, Hairstyle, Shoulder, Dress, Fashion model, Eyelash, Strapless dress, Waist, Style,

  • She wins multiple Grammys, including two before the show .

And during the show, she takes the top honor: Album of the Year. She makes the following speech, which includes a thinly veiled jab at Kanye West:

As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all of the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame . But if you just focus on the work, and you don't let those people sidetrack you, some day when you get where you're going, you'll look around and you'll know that it was you and the people who love you that put you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world.

Gomez is <3 :

  • A week later on the 21st, Demi Lovato calls out Swift on Twitter after Swift―unlike Lovato, Lady Gaga, and Miley Cyrus―said nothing after the New York Supreme Court ruled that Kesha would have to remain under contract with Sony and Dr. Luke, the producer she said emotionally, mentally, and sexually abused her.

Text, Font, Screenshot, Web page, Number,

  • Swift makes a $250,000 donation to Kesha that Sunday "to help with any of her financial needs during this trying time," Swift's rep told Us Weekly . Kesha's mother confirms the donation on Twitter:
  • Lovato remains unimpressed at Swift's silence—and would touch on her exchange with Swift again in October :

Text, Product, Font, Line, Icon, Brand,

Kesha would later appear at Swift's Fourth of July party and spark rumors she and Swift were recording together in September .

  • Harris and Swift celebrate their one-year anniversary. Swift posts a photo of a locket he gives her, captioning the shot "3.6.15 One year down! ❤️." (This, like every Tayvin photo, doesn't not survive the Great Instagram Purge in June .)

Adaptation, Collage, Palm tree, Chain, Arecales, Body jewelry, Love, Tropics,

Harris posts a Snapchat of the cake they had to mark the day:

  • Swift and Harris go on a very-Instagrammed vacation one week later:

Body of water, Coastal and oceanic landforms, People on beach, Shore, Photograph, People in nature, Summer, Ocean, Beach, Tourism,

  • On April 1, Swift releases the best Apple Music commercial ever ( at that time ...):
  • Swift attends the iHeartRadio Awards on April 3. There, she shows she's still no Belieber after Gomez's ex's performance (they don't have the best history, though Bieber made two public attempts to get back in her good graces this year ):

But gets the most attention for her interactions with Harris, whom she sits next to. They hug! She makes heart eyes during his acceptance speech:

And then, for the first time, she publicly thanks her boyfriend Harris during her acceptance speech for best tour . "You know, for the first time, I had the most amazing person to come home to when the spotlight went out and the crowd was all gone," she said. "So I want to thank my boyfriend Adam for that."

  • Days after, Swift releases her final 1989 music video, for "New Romantics." It's tour footage:
  • Swift ends the month by going to Coachella where Harris is playing―as a bleach blonde. She posts a first look at her platinum hair with a jacket featuring the album art for "This Is What You Came For" weeks before it came out:
  • Rihanna (who sings "TIWYCF") joins Harris's performance, and Swift fan girls over her:
  • She and Harris also take 21st birthday girl Gigi Hadid to Coachella with them for a night, via private plane:
  • On April 29, "This Is What You Came For" drops, the song Swift co-wrote with Harris (though no one knew at the time, as she was credited under a pseudonym).
  • Harris does a radio interview for the single, where he's asked by Ryan Seacrest whether he'd ever work with Swift. "You know, we haven't even spoken about it [collaborating]," he tells the host on his radio show . "I can't see it happening, though. No. She's about to take a long break, you know?" That answer comes back to bite him later.
  • Swift starts the month co-hosting the Met Gala, where she and future boyfriend Tom Hiddleston meet.

Suit, Formal wear, Suit trousers, Blazer, Tuxedo, Wind instrument,

They have a dance-off that goes viral when they get together the following month:

  • Hiddleston does his first interview on Swift on the 16th for MTV UK . It's clear from it he has something of a crush on her, based on the four compliments he drops in 53 seconds. "I sat next time to her at dinner that night, and she was very charming. She is amazing," he says.
  • Swift, meanwhile, experiments with a rocker fashion look.

Clothing, Textile, Pattern, Joint, Outerwear, Denim, Style, Bag, Street fashion, Fashion,

She wins the Taylor Swift award at the BMI Awards and accepts it on May 11, looking nothing like herself .

Shoulder, Dress, Waist, Style, Fashion model, Fashion, Eyelash, Blond, Bangs, Model,

  • On May 22, Harris gets in a serious car accident . Swift is reportedly there for him though their relationship is nearing its end. Their breakup is announced less than two weeks later.
  • Swift and Harris end their relationship on June 1. They confirm the news in a tweet (that days later Harris would delete) on the 2nd.

Text, Product, Font, Screenshot,

  • Swift is spotted at a fan's wedding a few days later:
  • Kim Kardashian gives an interview to GQ where she says Swift lied about not knowing about Kanye West's "Famous" lyric about her and that there is footage of the phone call where Swift learned about it.

"She totally knew that that was coming out," Kardashian says. "She wanted to all of a sudden act like she didn't. I swear, my husband gets so much shit for things [when] he really was doing proper protocol and even called to get it approved. What rapper would call a girl that he was rapping a line about to get approval?"

Swift's team gives GQ this statement:

Taylor does not hold anything against Kim Kardashian as she recognizes the pressure Kim must be under and that she is only repeating what she has been told by Kanye West. However, that does not change the fact that much of what Kim is saying is incorrect. Kanye West and Taylor only spoke once on the phone while she was on vacation with her family in January of 2016 and they have never spoken since. Taylor has never denied that conversation took place. It was on that phone call that Kanye West also asked her to release the song on her Twitter account, which she declined to do. Kanye West never told Taylor he was going to use the term 'that bitch' in referencing her. A song cannot be approved if it was never heard. Kanye West never played the song for Taylor Swift. Taylor heard it for the first time when everyone else did and was humiliated. Kim Kardashian's claim that Taylor and her team were aware of being recorded is not true, and Taylor cannot understand why Kanye West, and now Kim Kardashian, will not just leave her alone.
  • On June 15, Harris suddenly starts erasing Swift from his Instagram . He tweets, then deletes, "Oh boy it's about to go down," along with three skull emojis. ....And it does: photos of Swift and Hiddleston kissing on the rocks in Rhode Island appear on The Sun 's cover.
  • Swift does an Instagram purge of all Harris posts from her accounts and goes full throttle into her relationship with Hiddleston. They go to Nashville, where Hiddleston meets Swift's parents , and go to Selena Gomez's concert.
  • Harris meanwhile, appears to answer Instagram users' questions about his relationship and breakup with Swift . He says Swift controlled the media narrative of it, and he's "not jealous [of Tom] sir, [but] FREE" on the 24th.
  • At the same time, Swift is photographed in England, where she meets Hiddleston's family, looking more like her old Taylor Swift self:

Water, People in nature, Jeans, Jacket, Wetsuit, Beach, Adventure, Dry suit, Leather jacket,

  • Kanye West releases his "Famous" music video , featuring a naked, wax Swift. She does not respond.
  • Two days later on the 27th, she and Hiddleston are spotted in Rome.
  • They make out at the Colosseum. They visit the Vatican ! They share breakfast PDA. It's intense...
  • ...And to some, not quite believable. Conspiracy theories start circulating that Hiddleswift was meant to be a media distraction from Kardashian's quote, one that suggests Swift is dishonest.
  • The biggest Taylor Swift party of the year happens in Rhode Island: her Fourth of July extravaganza. Tom Hiddleston joins this one, where he wears his magnificent, memed "I Heart T.S." tank.

Hiddleswift also show a lot of PDA on inflatable slides and porch chairs . Swift, notably, does not post photos of Hiddleston. Her friends do for her:

Photograph, Room, Technology, Elbow, Office equipment, Display device, Snapshot, Computer, Paper product, Office supplies,

  • On July 7, TMZ reports Harris is releasing a song he wrote—"Olé"—about Hiddleswift. Its lyrics suggest Swift cheated on Harris with Hiddleston. ("You've hidden my name in your phone so you can call me to tell me you've been going through hell. Left him alone and you booked in a hotel" and "Low key [a] you won't tell none of your friends about me.") The song comes out on July 8 and does indeed have those lyrics—though whether he wrote it after their breakup is unclear.
  • Swift goes with Hiddleston to Australia, where he's filming his new Thor movie. Two days later, paparazzi catch Hiddleston on his run. He has trouble answering questions about Swift:
  • On July 13, it comes out that Swift did indeed write "TIWYCF" with Harris. Harris confirms the tabloid reports on Twitter and makes a direct appeal to Swift. "I figure if you're happy in your new relationship, you should focus on that instead of trying to tear your ex bf down for something to do. ...I know you're off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy ETC but I'm not that guy, sorry. I won't allow it."

"I've had it with people blatantly treating my husband a certain way and making him look a certain way. And I'm gonna say how I feel...He really did wanna do the right thing."
  • Hiddleston gives his first official interview on Taylor Swift to The Hollywood Reporter a day later. When asked about the Hiddleswift conspiracy theories, he laughs them off. "Well, um. How best to put this? The truth is that Taylor Swift and I are together, and we're very happy. Thanks for asking. That's the truth. It's not a publicity stunt."
  • Kim Kardashian posts a shady tweet before dropping Snapchats of Swift and Kanye West's recorded "Famous" lyric approval phone call on July 17. Swift approves of at least some of the lyrics . A brief excerpt:
KW: For all my Southside n***** that know me best, I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex.
TS: I'm like this close to over exposure...
KW: Oh well this one, I think this is a really cool thing to have, uh...
TS: I know, I mean it's like a compliment kind of.
KW: All I give a fuck about is just you as a person and as a friend I want things that make...
TS: That's sweet.
KW: I don't want to do rap that makes people feel bad.
TS: Um, yeah I mean go with whatever line you think is better. It's obviously very tongue in cheek either way. And I really appreciate you telling me about it, that's really nice.

"It comes down to being authentic," he tells People of dealing with the Hiddleswift hate. "Everything you do you have to make sure you truly believe in it and as long as you know that, it doesn't matter what anyone else says about it because the nature of being a public figure is that everyone will have an opinion about anything you do, and as long as you know why you've done something and you've committed to it with authenticity then you're okay."
  • Hiddleston heads back to Australia solo on the 3rd. It's the beginning of the end for the two of them.

  • Swift reportedly attends Blake Lively's baby shower in Bedford, NY a day before the VMAs.
  • Swift skips the VMAs (she would have faced Kim Kardashian and Kanye West for the first time since the Snapchat scandal, and she didn't win anything).
  • On the 29th, the morning after the show, Swift is photographed serving jury duty in Nashville.
  • News breaks that Hiddleston and Swift split on Sept. 6 . Swift ended it, Us Weekly reports. "Tom wanted the relationship to be more public than she was comfortable with," a source tells the outlet. "Taylor knew the backlash that comes with public displays of affection but Tom didn't listen to her concerns when she brought them up."
  • Swift makes her first public appearance since the Snapchat scandal and Hiddleswift breakup, at Gigi Hadid and Tommy Hilfiger's New York Fashion Week show on Sept. 9.

There, she posts an Instagram of herself lip-syncing to her and Harris's "This Is What You Came For":

  • The DJ releases another breakup song that's maybe about Swift, "My Way," on Sept. 16. The song's lyrics, which are basically, "But in my heart I understand/I made my move and it was all about you/Now I feel so far removed," and "You were the one thing in my way," are pretty similar to the sentiment Harris expressed in July about their breakup .
  • A week later, TMZ reports he and Swift are texting and are (just) friends now , so there's no more bad blood.
  • Swift's other feud with Perry also nears its end. Perry extends a second olive branch- ish on Twitter on Sept. 11 , explaining just how Swift can achieve peace with her. It isn't clear whether Swift has, but the offer stands:

  • Swift ends the month with a rumored visit to the hospital to see Lively after she gives birth to her second child .

This is a solid month for the single squad.

  • Swift is spotted out multiple times in New York City with Cara Delevingne ( newly separated from St. Vincent ) and her friends-turned-new-squad members Suki Waterhouse and Dakota Johnson:
  • Swift does her much-hyped, only concert of 2016 at the Formula One show . She finds her look there (that hair!) and does not, as rumored, drop a new album.

Taylor Swift

  • She does sing "This Is What You Came For" for the first time though! "As a songwriter, the most rewarding feeling in the world is writing something and then having a crowd sing it back to you because they know the words," she tells the crowd before going into it. "It's the coolest thing in the world. And um, I've never played this song live before. But if you know it, maybe you could sing along and then I could get to know what that feels like, to hear a song sung back to me."
  • On Oct. 24, Swift goes to Drake's birthday party, out of nowhere. Some tabloids try to create dating rumors from it, but there's no evidence anything romantic went on.
  • Swift shows her romantic side two days later when she comments on Lively's post for Ryan Reynolds' birthday.
  • Meanwhile, ex Harris releases the music video for "My Way" on Oct. 28.

It is full of Swift references because of course it is:

Furniture, Table, Room, Adaptation, Conversation, Interior design, Sitting, Leisure,

Swift does not respond to it.

  • She ends the month with her friends, borrowing Reynolds' Deadpool costume for a low-key Halloween party in her apartment. Guess who comments on it?

  • A new Swift-written song is revealed to be Little Big Town's "Better Man" on Nov. 1. "She sent us this song, and it was one that was really special to her," Karen Fairchild says in the Facebook Live press conference the group held . Swift confirms the news herself on Instagram that afternoon:

There are hints of her feelings about her Harris breakup (and perhaps Hiddleston) in the lyrics: "But I just miss you, and I just wish you were a better man," for example, could be seen as her way of acknowledging all of Harris' shade-throwing post-breakup . Her ending line "We might still be in love, if you were a better man/Better man" could also be telling.

  • Swift also makes headlines for doing what she does best the day before the election : throwing a celeb-filled birthday party for Lorde. "I am ur kid and u love me so hard i could burst," Lorde writes to Swift on her Instagram.
  • Swift gets attention for staying mum on who she's voting for in the election—and people debate whether she should or shouldn't weigh in on the contentious election . She does advocate voting though. She becomes Google's top searched for "who did _ vote for":
  • On Nov. 20, Drake releases his own Swift-themed Apple Music commercial, giving some explanation for that surprise Swift appearance at his birthday party:
  • Swift spends Thanksgiving in Rhode Island with Broadway pal Todrick Hall . They sing "The Little Mermaid" and share many photos of their celebration on Instagram.
  • Swift and one-time enemy-turned-Gigi Hadid's boyfriend Zayn Malik release Swift's first new song of 2016 : "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" for Fifty Shades Darker .

It tops the iTunes charts in hours.

Christmas and Swift's official birthday party remain. A surprise album could drop! A new romance could come about! Given the precedent set over the last 11 months, Swift will close out 2016 with a bang.

Taylor Swift new album: 2016 release date, new songs, tour, and everything else you need to know

Is it really coming soon?

Headshot of Lewis Corner

Over the past decade, Taylor Swift has gone from a promising country music breakout talent to one of the world's biggest superstars.

But when the music is this good, fans are always hungry for more, more, more. So with that in mind, here's everything we know about Taylor Swift's sixth studio album so far.

Taylor Swift new album: Is it really coming out in 2016?

No-one in the world of pop has had an album release rollout as routine as Taylor Swift. Ever since her self-titled debut album was released in October 2006, she's continued to put out a new record every two years.

NEW YORK, NY - NOVEMBER 22: Taylor Swift performs onstage during the 'Speak Now World Tour' at Madison Square Garden on November 22, 2011 in New York City. Taylor Swift wrapped up the North American leg of her SPEAK NOW WORLD TOUR with two sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden this week. In 2011, the tour played to capacity crowds in stadiums and arenas over 98 shows in 17 countries spanning three continents, and will continue in 2012 with shows Australia and New Zealand.

So it's no wonder that all of the Swifties out there are downright convinced the follow-up to 2014's multi-million-selling 1989 will be released in 2016. Taylor has also put her albums out in the month of October (apart from 2008's Fearless , which was in November), so her fans are adamant it's coming soon.

That's despite Taylor's record label head Scott Borchetta, telling fans that there wouldn't be a new album this year. He has, however, deleted the post since, but that seemed like a pretty definite indication that it might not be with us when we think it will.

That being said, every "insider" in the biz has claimed that big news is coming soon, but take it from us: nothing is confirmed until Taylor Swift tweets it to her 81.4 million Twitter followers. But a surprise drop could end up being one of the biggest pop moments this year.

Taylor Swift new album: What will it sound like?

Considering the mammoth success of Taylor Swift's previous two records – Red and 1989 – it's safe to assume that this whole pop route she's taken with her music is working out nicely.

So we'd imagine Taylor will be sticking with that for a third time, instead of going back to her country roots. Expect a whole new collection of massive pop anthems, chronicling the ups and downs of her past two years.

Taylor Swift at the US Grand Prix

And by that, we're suggesting that T-Swizz will almost certainly address her high-profile relationships with both Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston on this album. She has a reputation for being refreshingly honest with her lyrics, so we'd be stunned if there wasn't at least one heartbreak sing-along.

Along the same line of thinking, Taylor is also good at writing about any part of her life. We'd be shocked if there wasn't a reference to her ongoing feud with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, too. What better way to lay down your side of the story than with a chart-topping hit?

PHOTOSHOP Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Taylor Swift, feud

Again, judging by the reception to her previous two albums, we wouldn't rule out a reunion with pop guru Max Martin. The Swedish producer and songwriter helped mastermind some of her biggest hits like 'Shake It Off', 'I Knew You Were Trouble' and 'Blank Space', so we sure hope they've been back in the studio working their magic together again.

The only clue that we have to suggest that that's exactly what they've been doing is an Instagram post from Kesha. Yep, the singer hinted that she was in the studio working with a big name back in September. "Making a F**K OFF song with a casual Grammy Award-winning secret person," Kesha wrote. "I got a good feeling about this one."

Why do we think she means Taylor? Well, first off everyone knows Taylor is a Grammy winner. But more tellingly, Kesha included 13 emojis as part of the post, and as every good T-Swizz fan knows, that's Taylor's lucky number. Moreover, Kesha's picture saw her pictured in Max Martin's studio, adding further fuel to the fact he's been working on #TS6.

Oh and just in case you heard this new song and thought it was Taylor Swift singing , it isn't. Fans went crazy when Kelsea Ballerini (country singer and one of Taylor's friends) posted this clip on Snapchat, as it certainly does sound like a TS anthem. However, Kelsea had to clear up the confusion and let everyone know that it is actually her singing on the demo.

Taylor Swift tour and tickets: Will she hit the road again?

Considering Taylor Swift's last world tour grossed a casual $250.7 million, it's safe to assume she'll be out playing plenty of headlines shows across the world with her next album.

Taylor Swift

As to when this will happen all depends on when the new music gets released. If we do get a new collection by the end of 2016, there's nothing stopping her from getting out there again as early as March 2017. If the album doesn't arrive until next year, then that obviously pushes think back to the end of 2017.

One show that is confirmed for the next year, though, is her pre-Super Bowl show with AT&T on February 4. Maybe this will be a warm up for her own bigger shows to come shortly after?

Taylor Swift brings Travis Kelce onstage in London for the first time at an Eras Tour show

If anyone thought singing " Karma is the guy on the Chiefs " was as public as Taylor Swift was going to go with her all-star boyfriend, Travis Kelce, think again.

On Sunday night, at the third of her London Eras Tour shows this weekend, Kelce graced the famed diamond walkway at Wembley Stadium in his first-ever onstage appearance. He performed alongside Swift during the intro for "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" in the newly added "Tortured Poets" era of the show .

Taylor Swift is joined on stage by Travis Kelce

As Swift transitions into the last song of the era, she typically acts out a short skit with two of her dancers, after she appears to "drop dead" during the penultimate song in the set, "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived."

One of the dancers carries her to a heart-shaped couch, and they then appear to revive a lifeless Swift, changing her costume from a white gown to a two-piece sequin set and applying her makeup to get her ready for the rest of the show so she can, well, do it with a broken heart.

Kelce proved to be a fearless lover Sunday, joining the trio onstage in full costume, showing off his acting chops as if he were auditioning to be a mainstay for the rest of the tour.

Videos posted to social media showed Kelce first carrying Swift to the couch, then brushing her face with a makeup brush once she was up again. He showed off some dance moves, too, all with a big, goofy smile plastered to his face.

The track, an upbeat pop banger on Swift's latest album, appears to be about the Eras Tour itself and how Swift has been able to put on one of the biggest and most successful concert runs of all time amid a breakup with longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn last year, shortly after the tour began.

Swift herself gave high praise to her beau's performance, saying in a Monday post to Instagram that she was "still cracking up/swooning over" Kelce's stage debut on the Eras Tour.

It had already been a big Eras weekend for Kelce, who was at all three London shows. Swift posted a selfie on Instagram featuring Kelce alongside Prince William, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, who attended the Friday night show .

Kelce and Swift have been linked for nearly a year now, as rumors swirled last summer about a potential relationship after Kelce boldly declared on his podcast, "New Heights," that he tried (and failed) to give Swift a friendship bracelet with his number on it at one of her Kansas City shows.

They went public with their relationship in September when Swift attended a Kansas City Chiefs game against the Chicago Bears, and they have been caught supporting each other and their very public careers ever since.

Taylor Swift's 2nd London Eras Tour Show Sees Travis Kelce, Tom Cruise, Mila Kunis and More 'Shake It Off' Together

The singer's show at London's Wembley Stadium on Saturday, June 22, featured a star-studded crowd

Even A-list stars need to “Shake It Off" sometimes!

During Taylor Swift ’s second Eras Tour show in London on Saturday, June 22, a host of celebrities were captured dancing along to the singer's popular track from her 1989 album.

A video posted on X (formerly Twitter) showed the VIP tent at Wembley Stadium packed with the likes of Tom Cruise , Mila Kunis , Ashton Kutcher , Greta Gerwig , and, of course, Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce — all of whom were showing off their best moves as the pop superstar performed "Shake It Off."

The star-studded clip began with a view of Kunis, 40, shaking her head and bopping along to the beat while wearing a checked shirt, as her husband Kutcher, 46, jumped up and down behind her, pointing at his white T-shirt and raising his arm in the air.

As the camera panned over to the left of the movie star couple, a smiling Cruise, 61, became visible, swaying from side to side as Swift sang the track's chorus. Behind the Mission Impossible actor stood Kelce, 34, with his cap on backward.

But that wasn't the end of the A-list surprises, as right at the end of the video, Barbie director Gerwig, 40, could be seen happily shaking her head along to the track as she danced.

Another video posted online from the "Shake It Off" performance showed that Jason Kelce — who attended both the June 21 and June 22 shows with wife Kylie Kelce — was also having fun in the VIP tent.

The group captured in the fun clip weren't the only famous faces seen at Swift's second London show.

An Instagram snap posted by a fan account showed Rachel Zegler in a selfie image that appeared to have been taken en route to the show. The post also featured a pic of Liam Hemsworth in the audience, which was confirmed by a post on X which showed footage of Hemsworth among the crowd, chatting with others.

Meanwhile, Hugh Grant — who later shared his thanks to Swift in a Sunday, June 23, post on X — was also spotted in the VIP tent at the show, with a fan sharing footage on TikTok of him munching on a snack.

Fifty Shades of Grey actor Jamie Dornan was similarly captured in yet another fan video posted on X, standing in the crowd wearing a white T-shirt.

Elsewhere, during the June 22 Eras Tour performance, Kelce and Cruise were captured in a video having a sweet moment during "Blank Space." The clip showed the Kansas City Chiefs player laughing as he placed his hands on the actor's shoulders, prompting a smiling Cruise to pat one of Kelce's hands.

Swift's Friday night show was an equally epic affair, with Prince William , Prince George and Princess Charlotte attending and even posing with Swift for a photo . The royal trio also took a selfie with the singer and Kelce — which marked the first time the pop superstar has shared a photo of her boyfriend on her social media .

Salma Hayek , Nicola Coughlan , Jonathan Van Ness , Leslie Mann , Cara Camilla Whitehill-Mathieson, Delevingne and Van Ness’ husband Mark Peacock also showed up for Swift the same night.

The singer plays her final London show (for now) on Sunday, June 23, before heading to Ireland with her Eras Tour and then returning to London for more performances in August.

Paul McCartney stepped out Sunday night to support longtime friend Taylor Swift on night three of her Eras Tour shows in London.

Fans caught video of The Beatles singer walking to the VIP floor tent before the "Bejeweled" star took the stage. Donning a black suit, McCartney could be seen excitedly clapping, showing off a wrist full of bracelets and acknowledging the Swifts in attendance.

After a weekend full of surprise A-list appearances, London may officially be the most star-studded Eras Tour stop to date.

On Friday, Prince William celebrated his 42nd birthday with his children Prince George, 10, and Princess Charlotte, 9. According to a selfie shared on social media, the trio met with Swift and her boyfriend Travis Kelce before the show.

"I have my ways of telling, before I even hit the stage, what kind of crowd I'm walking out to see," she said swaying her pink guitar.

The singer-songwriter added she sends her parents out before the show to serve as spies and they report back on the crowd's energy.

"I've got to tell you my dad bursts into the dressing room," she laughed. "Bursts in! He's like, 'Hey, you don't understand. You don't get it. Night one was crazy. It was here. Night two is up here. Night three it's off the charts Tay.'"

The last time Swift and McCartney were publicly spotted together was in a Super Bowl 58 suite when the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers.

The two have been friends for years. In 2020, Swift interviewed McCartney for a "Rolling Stone" series called "Musicians on Musicians."

January 3, 2017: Swift journals that she's been in a secret relationship for three months.

taylor swift tour 2016

The singer included photocopied pages of her diary entries with physical copies of her 2019 album "Lover." One excerpt seemed to reference her relationship with Alwyn.

Dated January 3, 2017, Swift wrote, "I'm essentially based in London, hiding out trying to protect us from the nasty world that just wants to ruin things."

"We have been together and no one has found out for 3 months now," she added. "I want it to stay that way because I don't want anything about this to change."

May 2017: News breaks of their relationship.

taylor swift tour 2016

The Sun broke the news that Swift and Alwyn had been secretly dating for months.

A source told The Sun that the singer flew to see her British beau in London "via private jets and her security has made it a military-like mission to prevent her from being seen."

The outlet also reported, "She's been walking around with Joe in London using disguises, like scarves and hats, to keep her identity under wraps."

November 10, 2017: Swift releases "Reputation," an album apparently inspired by Alwyn.

taylor swift tour 2016

Since news of their relationship broke, fans began scouring Swift's songs and music videos for Easter eggs that point to Alwyn.

These clues date back to 2017's "Reputation," which Swift described as "an album about finding love throughout all the noise."

For example, the numbers "89" and "91" appear alongside each other in the "...Ready For It?" music video , released as a single on September 17, 2017.

Swift was famously born in 1989. The second number likely stands for 1991, Alwyn's birth year. At one point in the video, Swift also types "21" into a keypad; Alwyn's birthday is February 21.

A similar detail was noticed in the music video for "Delicate," another single from "Reputation." Swift dances in front of a visible sign that reads "Joe's Deli."

Several songs on the album, including "Gorgeous" and "New Year's Day," seem to reference to Alwyn's British accent and "ocean-blue eyes."

October 2017: Swift's close friend Ed Sheeran says he approves of her new relationship.

taylor swift tour 2016

The "Shape of You" singer described Alwyn as a "really, really friendly, really good dude" on Capital London's Breakfast Show .

"They are very much in love, they have quite a low-key relationship, which Taylor likes. It's normal, and no one really knows about it right now," he said.

One month later, Alwyn and Swift watched Sheeran perform at London's Jingle Ball. Fans captured videos of the couple slow-dancing to the song "Perfect."

April 2018: Swift performs a cover "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire, which may include a hint about their romance.

taylor swift tour 2016

When Swift recorded a cover of "September" as a Spotify exclusive , she tweaked the first line ("Do you remember the 21st night of September?") to say "the 28th night of September."

For an Easter egg enthusiast like Swift, it's hard to imagine this noticeable switch wasn't meant to send a message. Fans have theorized that September 28 was the day Alwyn professed his love to Swift.

In fact, Swift liked a Tumblr post explaining the theory.

May 2018: Alwyn and Swift share solo shots in the same spot.

taylor swift tour 2016

Although Swift and Alwyn have never shared any photos together, they posted near-identical solo shots on Instagram just one day apart.

Swift shared hers on May 7, 2018 , writing in the caption: "Today I met a cactus."

The following day , Alwyn shared his photo with just a cactus emoji.

November 2018: Swift promotes Alwyn's movie "The Favourite."

taylor swift tour 2016

Alwyn played the role of Baron Masham in the 2018 period drama "The Favourite." Swift hailed the film as "absolutely phenomenal" the day before its release.

She also supported Alwyn leading up to the premiere and accompanied him to the showing at the New York Film Festival in September 2018.

December 2018: Alwyn says it's "flattering" that Swift uses him as inspiration for her music.

taylor swift tour 2016

Swift has built a reputation as a confessional songwriter, drawing lyrical inspiration from her personal life. Fans believe albums such as "Reputation" and "Lover" contain references to Alwyn — although Swift never explicitly confirms who inspires her songs.

In a 2018 interview with The Sunday Times , the actor was asked if being the subject of his girlfriend's songs bothered him.

"No, not at all. No. It's flattering," he replied.

Earlier that month, he defended their privacy in an interview with Esquire . When asked if he was aware of the challenges that come with dating a superstar, Alwyn said he "didn't seek out advice" before getting involved with Swift.

"I know what I feel about it," he explained. "I think there's a very clear line as to what somebody should share, or feel like they have to share, and what they don't want to and shouldn't have to."

August 23, 2019: Swift releases "Lover," her first album that seems to detail a long-term relationship.

taylor swift tour 2016

In an interview with Vogue , Swift described her seventh album as "a love letter to love, in all of its maddening, passionate, exciting, enchanting, horrific, tragic, wonderful glory."

Although she didn't mention Alwyn by name, much of the album seems inspired by their long-term relationship: "I Think He Knows" describes her attraction to a man with "indigo eyes" and "London Boy" is an explicit declaration of love for a Brit. Both the title track and "Paper Rings" drop hints about wanting to get married.

The album closer "Daylight" is especially revealing. Originally planned as the title track, it reveals how Swift's vision of love had changed from passion and heat to comfort and warmth: "And I can still see it all in my head / Back and forth from New York, sneaking in your bed / I once believed love would be burning red / But it's golden."

February 10, 2019: Swift skips the Grammys to attend a BAFTA after-party with Alwyn instead.

taylor swift tour 2016

Swift's "Reputation" was nominated for best pop vocal album at the 2019 Grammys, but she skipped the Los Angeles ceremony to attend the BAFTA Awards after-party in London. ("The Favourite" received seven awards that night.)

Swift congratulated the film's cast in an Instagram post , but Alwyn wasn't pictured.

August 2019: Swift refuses to talk about Alwyn because "our relationship isn't up for discussion."

taylor swift tour 2016

Swift steered clear of her relationship with Alwyn during an August 2019 interview with The Guardian .

"I've learned that if I do, people think it's up for discussion, and our relationship isn't up for discussion," she said.

The singer continued, "If you and I were having a glass of wine right now, we'd be talking about it — but it's just that it goes out into the world. That's where the boundary is, and that's where my life has become manageable. I really want to keep it feeling manageable."

January 5, 2020: The couple make a rare public appearance at the Golden Globes.

taylor swift tour 2016

The couple walked the red carpet separately but sat together at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards .

Swift presented the award for best animated feature film and was nominated for best original song for "Beautiful Ghosts," which was featured in the movie "Cats."

January 31, 2020: Swift's Netflix documentary premieres, featuring a brief scene with Alwyn.

taylor swift tour 2016

The Netflix documentary "Taylor Swift: Miss Americana" doesn't focus on Swift's love life , but she does open up about the beginning of her relationship with Alwyn.

"I also was falling in love with someone who had a really wonderfully normal, balanced, grounded life and we decided together that we wanted our relationship to be private," she says. During this scene, a montage plays showing Swift in a series of home videos, but the person filming is never shown.

The camera crew only catches Alwyn in one brief scene, when Swift runs backstage to hug him after a concert on her Reputation Stadium Tour.

February 12, 2020: Swift kisses Alwyn at the NME Awards.

taylor swift tour 2016

Swift and Alwyn didn't walk the 2020 NME Awards carpet, but they did sit next to each other at the show, which took place at the O2 Academy Brixton in London.

A fan seated above Swift and Alwyn recorded several videos of the couple kissing and hugging. When the pop star won the award for best solo act in the world, she embraced the actor and kissed him once again.

April 2020: Alwyn shares photos of Swift's cat in the early stages of the pandemic.

taylor swift tour 2016

Alwyn provided a rare glimpse into his and Swift's private life by sharing photos of Benjamin Button , one of the pop star's three cats, on his Instagram story.

Although Swift didn't appear, fans recognized Benjamin from her own social media and took it as confirmation the couple were isolating together.

July 24, 2020: Swift surprise-releases her album "Folklore," which credits Alwyn as a cowriter.

taylor swift tour 2016

Swift shocked fans by announcing that she'd release her eighth studio album "Folklore" just one day in advance.

Swift began writing the album in April 2020 while she was quarantined with Alwyn. She told fans that she "poured all of my whims, dreams, fears, and musings" into the music, playing with characters and different perspectives to tell emotional stories.

The album is full of songs about heartbreak, fear, and betrayal, including "The 1," "Peace," and "Hoax."

Upon the album's release, fans grew concerned that Swift was drawing inspiration from her relationship with Alwyn to write these devastating tracks.

However, the 11th track is a sweet love song titled "Invisible String," which seems to specifically reference details about Alwyn's life , like his teenage job at a frozen yogurt shop.

Two songs on the album, "Exile" and "Betty," were credited to a mysterious cowriter named William Bowery. Fans immediately began suspecting that it was a pseudonym for Alwyn , which Swift later confirmed .

"Joe plays piano beautifully, and he's always just playing and making things up and kind of creating things," she revealed in Disney+ film "Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions."

August 2020: Alwyn and Swift reportedly travel to Utah together.

taylor swift tour 2016

Alwyn shared an Instagram photo of himself hiking in Utah in August 2020, and Swift immediately liked the post.

Although she wasn't in the photo, a source told E! News that Swift accompanied Alwyn on the trip.

"Taylor has been based in Nashville, but she just went to Park City, Utah for a few days with Joe," the source said. "They're back in LA."

November 2020: Swift says her relationship with Alwyn allows her to "find bits of normalcy."

taylor swift tour 2016

For her November 2020 cover story for Rolling Stone , Swift discussed her private relationship in a conversation with Paul McCartney.

"In knowing him and being in the relationship I am in now, I have definitely made decisions that have made my life feel more like a real life and less like just a storyline to be commented on in tabloids," she told McCartney.

Swift added: "Whether that's deciding where to live, who to hang out with, when to not take a picture — the idea of privacy feels so strange to try to explain, but it's really just trying to find bits of normalcy."

When the former Beatle asked if Alwyn sympathizes with the reality of Swift's fame, she replied, "Oh, absolutely."

She also confirmed that "Peace," the penultimate track on "Folklore," is "rooted" in her personal life and relationship with Alwyn. She said the song was inspired by "how scary" it can be to carve out a "human life within a public life," especially when the other person has a "grounded, normal way of living."

"I, oftentimes, in my anxieties, can control how I am as a person and how normal I act and rationalize things, but I cannot control if there are 20 photographers outside in the bushes and what they do and if they follow our car and if they interrupt our lives," she said. "I can't control if there's going to be a fake weird headline about us in the news tomorrow."

December 11, 2020: Swift releases "Evermore," featuring more songwriting collaborations with Alwyn.

taylor swift tour 2016

When Swift announced her second surprise album of 2020, she told fans that many of the same collaborators from "Folklore" helped craft "Evermore" — one of them being Alwyn.

The actor is credited (under the same pseudonym) on three "Evermore" tracks : "Champagne Problems," "Coney Island," and "Evermore."

He later said that writing songs with his girlfriend in quarantine  was "as basic as some people made sourdough."

"It was completely off the cuff, an accident," Alwyn told Vulture. "She said, 'Can we try and sit down and get to the end together?' And so we did."

January 2021: The couple is spotted holding hands in London.

taylor swift tour 2016

Swift and Alwyn made a rare public outing together in early January 2021, taking a stroll through North London Public Park with the actor's mother, Elizabeth Alwyn.

The couple held hands, and all three individuals wore masks, as seen in a photograph published by E! News .

An anonymous source told the outlet that Swift has been splitting her time between England and Nashville during the pandemic.

"She is back and forth between Nashville and England spending time with her family and with Joe's family. They take walks in the neighborhood and go on hikes to get fresh air," they said, adding that Alwyn often "comes along."

March 2021: Alwyn supports Swift when she calls out a sexist joke.

taylor swift tour 2016

On the Netflix show "Ginny & Georgia," a teenager tells her mother that she goes "through men faster than Taylor Swift."

After fans took notice of the line in March 2021, which many considered misogynistic, "RESPECT TAYLOR SWIFT" began trending on Twitter.

The musician responded directly, slamming the joke as "lazy" and "deeply sexist" on Twitter .

"How about we stop degrading hard working women by defining this horse shit as FuNnY. Also, @netflix after Miss Americana this outfit doesn't look cute on you," she wrote, adding a broken-heart emoji. "Happy Women's History Month I guess."

Alwyn, who hadn't liked a tweet since November 2020, returned to the social media platform to cosign Swift's message.

March 14, 2021: Swift thanks Alwyn during her Grammys acceptance speech.

taylor swift tour 2016

Swift thanked Alwyn in her acceptance speech after "Folklore" won album of the year at the 2021 Grammy Awards, making her the first woman to win the award three times.

"Joe, who is the first person that I play every single song that I write, and I had the best time writing songs with you in quarantine," she said onstage.

Summer 2021: Swift spends time with Alwyn on set in Ireland.

taylor swift tour 2016

Alwyn's Hulu show "Conversations With Friends" was largely filmed in Dublin , but in July 2021, Alwyn was photographed with his costar Alison Oliver in Bray , a coastal town in the Irish county Wicklow.

Alwyn stars in the adaptation alongside Oliver, Jemima Kirke, and Sasha Lane. While the four actors filmed the 12-episode series, Swift visited the set and spent time with them, Kirke explained during an interview with iNews .

"We all became very close: Joe, me, Sasha, Alison and Taylor — we all became each other's pod," the former "Girls" star explained.

Swift seemed to confirm this in her 2022 song "Sweet Nothing," which was cowritten by Alwyn.

"I spy with my little tired eye / Tiny as a firefly / A pebble that we picked up last July," she sings in the first verse. "Down deep inside your pocket / We almost forgot it / Does it ever miss Wicklow sometimes?"

February 2022: Alwyn says he's "happy in a monogamous relationship."

taylor swift tour 2016

In "Conversations With Friends," Hulu's adaptation of Sally Rooney's debut novel, Alwyn plays Nick, a married actor that has an affair with a college student .

Alwyn discussed the limited series during a media presentation at the Cable and Television Association for Marketing in February 2022. When asked to share his personal opinion on open relationships, the actor responded by saying that such an arrangement seems "exhausting" but also reasoned, "people can do what they want and makes them happy."

He added: "I'm obviously happy in a monogamous relationship."

April 2022: Once again, the actor defends the couple's privacy.

taylor swift tour 2016

During an interview with Elle UK to promote "Conversations With Friends," Alwyn spoke about his decision to keep his relationship with Swift removed from the public sphere .

Alwyn told the magazine that "it's not really" because he wants "to be guarded and private, it's more a response to something else."

"We live in a culture that is so increasingly intrusive," the actor continued. "The more you give — and frankly, even if you don't give it — something will be taken."

May 9, 2022: Alwyn declines to confirm rumors of their engagement.

taylor swift tour 2016

During an interview with Vulture , Alwyn declined to confirm speculation that he and Swift were engaged or already married.

"The truth is, if I had a pound coin for every time someone told me I've been engaged or I'm getting engaged, I would have a lot of pound coins," he said. "If the answer was yes, I wouldn't say. If the answer is no, I wouldn't say."

May 15, 2022: Swift publicly supports Alwyn's career.

taylor swift tour 2016

When "Conversations With Friends" premiered, Swift shared Time's review of the show on her Instagram and wrote that she "can confirm it's phenomenal."

October 7, 2022: Swift references her relationship with Alwyn while teasing her single "Lavender Haze."

taylor swift tour 2016

Ahead of its release, Swift shared a video of herself explaining the inspiration behind her "Midnights" single "Lavender Haze." (It has since been deleted .)

According to the singer, "Lavender Haze" was a "common phrase" used in the '50s to describe being in love.

"That meant you were in that all-encompassing love glow," she said. "Theoretically, when you're in the lavender haze, you'll do anything to stay there."

"I think a lot of people have to deal with this now, not just 'public figures,' because we live in the era of social media," Swift added. "If the world finds out that you're in love with somebody, they're going to weigh in on it."

She added that during her six-year relationship, they've had to ignore "weird rumors, tabloid stuff" in order to "protect the real stuff."

In the song, Swift reveals that she was referring to speculation that she and Alwyn are engaged ,  secretly married , or  planning to have children . ("No deal, that 1950s shit they want from me," she sings.)

The music video also seems to contain several nods to Alwyn , including a vinyl cover bearing the constellation for Pisces, his zodiac sign.

October 21, 2022: Swift releases "Midnights," which includes another song cowritten with Alwyn.

taylor swift tour 2016

Swift said her 10th album contains real details about "sleepless nights scattered throughout my life," immediately distinguishing "Midnights" as more autobiographical than "Folklore" and "Evermore."

The 12th track, "Sweet Nothing," was cowritten by Swift and Alwyn, who is once again credited under the pen name William Bowery.

The lyrics seem to explore tender moments in their relationship, referencing their 2021 trip to Wicklow in the first verse and praising Alwyn's laid-back attitude in the chorus.

Swift uses the common phrase "sweet nothings" as a double entendre; it's typically used to describe the whisperings of a lover , but Swift also uses it to illustrate that her relationship is quiet and nondemanding ("You're in the kitchen humming / All that you ever wanted from me was sweet nothing").

April 8, 2023: Multiple outlets report Swift and Alwyn's breakup.

taylor swift tour 2016

After six years together, Swift and Alwyn went their separate ways.

Entertainment Tonight broke the news while Swift was on the road for The Eras Tour. People and Page Six later confirmed the report.

According to ET, the couple split a few weeks prior. Its source described their breakup as amicable, adding, "It was not dramatic."

"The relationship had just run its course. It's why [Alwyn] hasn't been spotted at any shows," the source said.

Representatives for Swift and Alwyn didn't respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

May 2023: Swift releases the "Midnights" vault track "You're Losing Me," which fans believe was inspired by Alwyn.

taylor swift tour 2016

Less than two months after the breakup made headlines, Swift announced she'd be releasing more music from the "Midnights" era, including a song that was cut from the original tracklist entitled "You're Losing Me."

The lyrics describe two lovers who are drifting apart and unable to communicate . Swift criticizes her muse for ignoring her sadness and neglecting her needs, which culminates in the song's unvarnished bridge: "I wouldn't marry me either / A pathological people pleaser / Who only wanted you to see her."

The song's producer, Jack Antonoff, later revealed that Swift wrote "You're Losing Me" in December 2021 , when she was still publicly dating Alwyn.

In retrospect, fans wonder if "Midnights" hinted at cracks in their relationship.

The album includes songs like "Midnight Rain" and "Bejeweled," which depict Swift as an ambitious, untethered woman. In the latter's music video, Swift declines a wedding proposal and ends up alone in her castle .

The album's extended "3am Edition" also concludes with "Dear Reader," an intimate ballad about Swift's lonely experience with fame . She sings of returning to "a house, not a home, all alone 'cause nobody's there," adding, "No one sees when you lose when you're playing solitaire."

April 19, 2024: Swift releases "The Tortured Poets Department," which may contain clues about her split from Alwyn.

taylor swift tour 2016

Swift's 11th studio album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," contains some of her most uninhibited and forthright lyricism to date.

As usual, Swift has kept the identities of her muses private. But two songs, "So Long, London" and "Loml," appear to be most inspired by Swift's relationship with Alwyn.

"So Long, London" is likely intended as a sequel to "London Boy," an upbeat love song released in 2019 after Swift relocated to the English city.

Swift's new song explores how a familiar place, once so precious, can grow sinister over time. Likewise, a comfortable relationship can grow complacent and resentful. ("You swore that you loved me, but where were the clues? / I died on the altar waiting for the proof.")

"Loml" is similarly preoccupied with erosion. As Swift rehashes the relationship in question, the titular phrase "love of my life" gradually becomes "loss of my life."

June 15, 2024: Alwyn breaks his silence on the breakup in an interview.

taylor swift tour 2016

The actor spoke about his relationship with and split from Swift in an interview with The Sunday Times over a year after their breakup.

"I would hope that anyone and everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and a half years," he said.

The "Kinds of Kindness" actor said that the end of their relationship was a "hard thing to navigate."

"What is unusual and abnormal in this situation is that, one week later, it's suddenly in the public domain, and the outside world is able to weigh in," he added.

Alwyn told the Times that he had made his "peace" with misconceptions surrounding their split, especially after the couple had gone to great lengths to  keep their relationship private .

"As everyone knows, we together — both of us, mutually — decided to keep the more private details of our relationship private. It was never something to commodify, and I see no reason to change that now," Alwyn said. "And, look, this is also a little over a year ago now, and I feel fortunate to be in a really great place in my life, professionally and personally. I feel really good."

Taylor Swift had a surprise for fans attending her Eras Tour at London’s Wembley Stadium on Sunday: her boyfriend and tight end for the Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs, Travis Kelce .

Dressed in a tuxedo with a tailcoat and top hat, Kelce joined Swift on stage for a transitional sketch that leads into the song “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.” In fan videos, he’s seen carrying Swift, urging her into a costume change. He fanned and powdered her face as part of the act.

Last month, in her first Eras Tour concert since the release of “The Tortured Poets Department,” Swift shook up her setlist. At the La Défense Arena in Paris, fans were treated to the inclusion of new songs from the record-breaking album released in April.

The billion-dollar Eras Tour is meant to be a career retrospective, with Swift performing more than 40 tracks reflecting 17 years of recorded music. “The Tortured Poets Department” was her first brand-new release since the tour’s start.
