Reviews about The Hip Tourist

  • Mike P. January 26, 2023, 8:36 pm Needed some baskets for special guests. Kathy did a fantastic job, the guests loved them. She worked Christmas day to be sure they were done — complaints about communication — this is the Keys we are working our behinds off to get the job done, there just aren't enough of us here willing to work. Great Job Kathy!!!!! 0 0 Reply
  • T M. January 19, 2023, 1:07 am I'm so conflicted as I write this review. Trying to decide between a 2 and a 3 star review. Ultimately the gift I sent for my family's anniversary celebration in Key West was well-received and very unique — which is exactly what I was going for. HOWEVER, the communication with Kathy is challenging at best. She seems to be a one-woman show and takes on all tasks but ends up very scattered through the process and has some misses. I gave her my list of “wants” and “wishes” as a starting point f or the gift. She ended up running around and buying a bunch of the stuff — calling me then telling me she was too busy to talk and then she sends a picture of the package as a done deal. Again, very cool and unique. HOWEVER she never gave me an estimate of the cost!!!!! Granted she could produce all of her receipts but still — no estimate and I felt bad about making any changes since she'd already purchased everything. She refuses to provide an invoice — actually makes you feel like you're offending her by asking — but she expects you to provide your credit card number to her over the phone to pay for it. I did get a picture of all the receipts so I guess I shouldn't complain. Cool idea — and a great way to get a unique gift to someone staying in Key West. But whew! It's a crazy ride. … – show 0 0 Reply
  • Lisa N. December 29, 2022, 8:00 pm If you are going to spend a day walking in Key West, go here first. Rent a dog stroller or baby stroller to carry all your stuff. The store owner is so wonderful and will even deliver to you in Key West. Great service and rates. 0 0 Reply
  • Jennifer B. December 2, 2022, 3:43 am I would agree communication is a bit erratic but I felt like the owner did a really great job overall. We needed a jogging stroller and she delivered it and picked it up seamlessly. I think people need to be patient with a small business and understand that the owner is literally hopping all around delivering, picking up and trying to make all the tourists happy. I think there is a lack of organization but like the rest of the world I'm sure she's short staffed. I suggest you be patient and give grace. … – show 0 0 Reply
  • Stephen W. September 26, 2022, 7:15 pm Called Kathy two days ago and still haven’t got any response. Communication is erratic and inconsistent. We used Hip Tourist last year and we’re pleased with the prices but the service/communication is poor. It took her 3—4 weeks to charge my card for the rentals from our vacation last year. We had to break down and buy our own chairs this year and will have to donate them to the Salvation Army before we leave. Completely unprofessional. 0 0 Reply

  • DANA B. June 14, 2022, 9:14 pm Kathy was so great! She was able to put together the perfect gift display for my boss and his wife. She had great ideas and I was glad I trusted her experience and professionalism. Great job! 0 0 Reply
  • Rose S. May 28, 2022, 1:24 am Although I did not rent from this company, the reason being was she was rude when I spoke with her, didn’t return my calls (several), told me to text my info then never responded, and when I tried to email her the mail box was full and my email couldn’t be delivered. She told me I wasn’t special (regarding returning my call when she said she would) and that she was a one-person enterprise. I think she needs to hire some help. I do not recommend using her services. Babyquip.com as seen on Shark Tank, got back to me within hours and was very courteous and pleasant. And their website was quick and easy. … – show 0 0 Reply
  • Toni H. March 9, 2022, 8:49 pm Should have read this reviews first, I can confidently confirm what everyone else said, the lady I just spoke to was rude, passive aggressive and told me all I needed to know, which is the simple fact I would never use them. First impressions are important and I hope they take these reviews seriously in the future if they want any business at all. 0 0 Reply
  • Chip G. February 11, 2022, 10:35 pm Are you kidding me? She is amazing! Look at that! She delivers beauty and happiness. She fills needs in the community. 0 0 Reply
  • Lucas B. February 8, 2022, 6:23 pm The owner's communication skills were terrible. It took me forever (over a month) to communicate with her what I needed. Even when I was finally able to do that, she did not show up to decorate our room until AFTER our check-in time. I had been telling her said date and time for weeks and she guaranteed the service she could provide. I had her decorate while we were at dinner and it looked good once she finally decorated. It then took multiple days to settle payment. I could not get them to send me an itemized bill or invoice. Instead, days later I get a call from her assistant and she read off the cost of everything and asked for a credit card over the phone. Out of eagerness to be rid of communications with this company, I agreed to the charge and gave them my information. The cost seemed WAY overpriced for what I ordered and for the poor quality of service that was provided. I would never reach out to this company again even if it were my only options. The other reviews confirm it was not just me — this is a common theme. … – show 0 0 Reply
  • Tiara February 7, 2022, 7:31 pm I called this company even after reading the negative reviews as I will be visiting key west for the first time and I wanted to decorate our room for my husband's birthday. After reviewing their website, I called. Before I could even fully explain what I wanted she immediately tried to refer me to someone else and told me how she is sooo busy and basically treated me as if my business wasn't important. Didn't explain what she could provide that would meet my needs as an alternative and let me ma ke the decision. Instead, she talked on and on. Went on to tell me about other vendors and how some won't even talk to you unless you are spending a certain amount of money. I guess perhaps she read my voice and decided how she would treat me. It's a real shame that people have been in business so long and still don't really know what customer service is. Totally bad representation of the “small town” as she referred to it. If my experience in Key West is anything like her, I am not looking forward to this trip. … – show 0 0 Reply
  • Amber S. December 4, 2021, 5:37 pm As mentioned by everyone else, don’t even waste your time. I read the reviews before hand and thought maybe it would work out anyway, and it did not. Cathy took my information, request, credit card info etc and never fulfilled the request. Incredibly disappointing as we were celebrating a 30th birthday. Would have rather been told “no I can’t do it I’m understaffed” so I could’ve found an alternative. 0 0 Reply
  • James W. November 29, 2021, 9:58 pm When I called the person who answered the phone was in the middle of helping a customer. I left my name, number and requested a call back. After a day passed I called back and the same thing happened. The person that answered the phone was in the middle of a conversation helping a customer. I left my name and number and requested a call back. A few more days went by so I called again and the same thing happened. The person was in the middle of helping a customer. This time I was assured a called back and was politely told that I should understand that mornings were their busy time of day. I was once again assured a call back once the person made it back to the store. I AM STILL WAITING!!! … – show 0 0 Reply

  • ebony r. October 20, 2021, 10:41 pm If I could give this woman no stars I would. She is the most rudest person I've ever spoken to. She doesn't allow you to speak. She continues to tell you how busy she is and trying to get to everyone which is her excuse for not returning emails and calls. I must have reached out to her several times this week and each time I had to go over what I wanted EVERY time. She promised to call me back once she got to her office but literally 4 hours has passed and I had to be the one to reach out to her . I told her how rude and unprofessional she was being and not one time did she apologize. I'm totally shocked she's still in business from her ride demeanor and how horrible she is with communication. I literally had to hand up on her because she was not interested in hearing my concerns. I'm so glad I didn't go with this so called business. She had the nerve to tell me “oh I understand how frustrating this is for me but it's even more frustrating for me because you're not the one in this chair doing it”. Like what!!! The Hip Gift Shop

A HIP TRIP Poster Set – Limited Edition

A set of 8, 16” x 20” posters designed and printed in Canada.

80lb Cougar Smooth uncoated paper.

Belisle and Rogers created the seven posters after a lot of back and forth balancing obvious songs with lesser known songs that have great stories behind them like The Dire Wolf poster representing Isle Aux Morts Newfoundland. Every poster presented challenges of showing the community, hinting at aspects of the songs in a subtle way that fans would recognize and discover, and then writing advertising copy that balanced the location, actual things to do in the community as a tourist and put them all together. The other aspect we wanted to look at was to give the posters a modern illustrative look and feel like a modern version of the travel posters from the past.

Intro poster:

The Hip Trip 40th anniversary logo and how to have the logo and locations on a poster without it being completely different than the other posters was a challenge. Using the same style we ended up with a vintage bus traveling to the locations, and added the logo and tour locations to the side of a bus, which worked with the format and brought it all together. Also a chance to bring in Gus the Polar bear as the driver.

Thompson Girl/Churchill Man.

We started with this tried and true fan favourite. Even though it is “Thompson girl” what was visually appealing was based on this girl walking from Churchhill, and exploring what that landscape actually looks like, with Polar Bears watching and Nickel stacks in the background. Definitely wanted to recreate the grey-blue beauty that a lot of Canadians know from long winters.

Bobcaygeon/Bobcaygeon Ont.

We knew this song had to be on there, the challenge was trying to understand what Bobcaygeon kind of looked like, and that a lot of people remember the video. We tried to create a color palette that went beyond a starry night that’s mentioned in the song. We zoned in on the waterway as an unique backdrop after lots of research and created the 2 characters in what was meant to be a goodbye in the early morning. Which why you see the wine bottles and Willie Nelson records on the floor of the house (very small).

100th Meridian/ Brandon Man.

This was an interesting decision because it doesn’t  actually mention Brandon and a few places can claim the 100th Meridian. But the people of Brandon know where it runs.

The poster itself has some of our favourite references starting with Ry Cooder singing a eulogy. The central image had to be based on the corduroy roads and how they continue into the distance. The Raven carrying a muddy old skull was a lyric that can be overlooked because of the quick phrasing, but it seemed like a great addition to the muddy road, patchwork fields and Brandon in the moonlight.

Three Pistols/Algonquin Park Ont.

Of all the posters we knew there was only one image that would work, Tommy Thompson paddling by, period. Like a lot of Canadians we are fans of the group of seven and the story of Tommy spending so much time there was a natural. We decided to try to capture the dimming light mentioned in the song and the landscape full of color. We intentionally added a bit of a Mid Century feel to the style for Tommy Thompson’s era and his painter’s fashion sense complete with pipe.

The Luxury/ Golden BC

The Golden Rim an actual Motel in Golden BC was mentioned in The Luxury when the band passed through and read the signs featuring soft water and color TV. For the poster we imagined the band holding over for a stay. Which of all the posters this is the only one that features the band in a small way. The TV inside the room featuring a lion. The lyrics in this song are so dense and touch on so many themes that we just had to pick the motel as a starting point. Then surround it with dense forested mountains and the bridge found just outside of Golden, using fall colors as a color guide. The poster copy also touches on the lyrics and the community.

Wheat Kings/ Saskatoon Sask

This was the first poster we thought of, then had second thoughts about the lyrics but the descriptions of the prairies was too good to turn down. Again we position the community, sunny Saskatoon in the background and bring the history of the grain elevators into the foreground. It was also a good place to attach the weather vane. We were inspired by the rusty brown elevators, wheat and warm light of the prairies for the color tones. A close look reveals other aspects of the song.

The Dire Wolf/ Isle Aux Morts, Newfoundland

This poster was another challenge to figure how many element we wanted to portray, ultimately the song references the growing sea and the history of ship wrecks off the coast. So we focussed on the stories of Ann Harvey’s family and their Newfoundland dog, Hairyman, who rescued almost 200 souls in two daring rescues in the early 1800’s.

Body of American tourist found on scenic Greek island, latest in a string of missing or dead foreigners

Five foreign tourists on the Greek islands are now missing or dead.

An American tourist was found dead Sunday on a beach on the Greek Island of Mathraki, the latest in a series of foreign tourists found dead or reported missing in the scenic vacation paradise in the past week, authorities said.

The remains of the missing American were discovered at about 1:30 p.m. local time on a beach near the old port of Mathraki Island, the president of the community of Mathraki Island told ABC News.

The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

The man was last seen Tuesday at a tavern in Mathraki, west of Corfu Island, where he was staying with a Greek American friend, investigators told ABC News.

The friend called the police after he returned home Thursday and found the door of the house open, the lights on, and the air conditioning unit running, but there was no sign of the missing American or his identification and travel documents, according to investigators.

Mathraki has no police station or coast guard. Law enforcement officers from Corfu were called in to assist with the investigation.

A coroner was headed to the island Sunday to conduct a preliminary investigation, the president of Mathraki Island said. The body is expected to be taken to nearby Corfu Island, where an autopsy will be performed, officials said.

It's the second time in a week that an American tourist has been reported missing on the Greek Isles.

A search continued Sunday for a retired Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy who has been missing since Tuesday on the Greek Island of Amorgos, officials said. The retired deputy, identified by Greek authorities as 59-year-old Albert Calibet of Hermosa Beach, California, was reported missing when he failed to return from a hike, officials said.

Drone video obtained by ABC Los Angeles station KABC showed rescue crews searching the rocky terrain where they believed Calibet was hiking.

"We're sick to our stomachs, knowing he's out there somewhere," Calibet's girlfriend, Debbie Leshane, told KABC.

Leshane said Calibet called her just before leaving to go on a hike. She said they spoke for about six minutes and that Calibet later sent her a photo about 9:20 a.m. local time Tuesday from the trailhead sign. She said that was the last she heard from him.

On Saturday, a missing 74-year-old Dutch tourist was found dead on the eastern Greek island of Samos, according to The Associated Press .

The body of the Dutch tourist, whose name has not been released, was discovered by firefighters using a drone. He was found lying face down in a ravine 330 yards from the spot where he was last seen walking.

MORE: Second American reported missing from Greek islands, authorities say

Officials said the Dutch tourist was reported by observers to be having some difficulty hiking in the triple-digit heat that has enveloped the islands.

Some of the five tourists missing or found dead were believed to be hiking in blistering temperatures.

On June 9, Dr. Michael Mosley, a noted British TV anchor and author, was found dead on the the island of Symi. A coroner concluded that he had died around June 5, shortly after going for a hike over treacherous, rocky terrain.

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis used a touching photo taken by their mom Kate Middleton to wish their dad Prince William a happy Father’s Day Sunday.

The snap from keen photographer Kate — who is currently battling cancer — shows the three young royals hugging their dad while all four look out at the sea.

Kate Middleton's photo of William and thier kids on Father's Day.

“We love you, Papa. Happy Father’s Day G, C & L,” read the caption on the Prince and Princess of Wales’ official social media accounts.

The post comes one day after Middleton made her first public appearance in months after revealing she’s been battling cancer.

On Saturday, she stood on the balcony at Buckingham Palace between her husband and King Charles III, who announced his own fight against cancer in February.

The two were pictured alongside the rest of the Royal Family waving at the crowd and taking in the traditional military procession during the  annual Trooping the Colour  on Saturday.

Middleton, 42,  announced Friday  that she was feeling well enough to attend, despite saying she has “good days and bad days” following her revelation in March that she was undergoing chemo for an unspecified form of cancer.

As Trooping the Colour got underway, Middleton received a boisterous ovation from thousands of supporters who lined the mall as she and her three children arrived at the event in a carriage.

Trooping the Colour  happens each June as a birthday celebration for the monarch — despite Charles’ real birthday being Nov. 14.

It’s believed to be the first time the royal children have authored a social media post online.

There’s no shortage of yoga poses that are considered hip openers. These well-known postures that are commonly requested by students include shapes that focus on hip external rotation, or turning the thigh bone away from the midline of the body and stretching the muscles along the inner thigh. But that’s not the only way the hip can open. The opposite movement, known as hip internal rotation, turns your thigh bone toward the midline of the body and engages different muscles. And it’s largely missing in traditional yoga.

Anatomy of Hip Internal Rotation

The thigh bone (femur) and hip joint are a ball-and-socket joint, which means the head of the bone sits like a knob in the hip socket. This enables the thigh bone to move in 360 degrees.

the hip tourist photos

When contracted , the hip internal rotation muscles pull the thigh bones toward one another. These include the anterior fibers of the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus, the tensor fasciae latae, adductors, and the pectineus. Although internal rotation is essential to everyday life, many of us experience more limited range of motion here than in external rotation.

Part of this difficulty for yoga practitioners may be due to the fact that only a limited number of poses emphasize the internal rotators, among them Eagle (Garudasana), Hero (Virasana), and Lord of the Fishes (Ardha Matsyendrasana). You may have also experienced teachers encouraging internal rotation in certain poses. For example, in Tadasana (Mountain Pose) , you might hear the cue to internally rotate your hips by “turning your inner thighs toward each other” or “reaching your inner thighs toward the wall behind you” to counteract the body’s tendency toward external rotation.

But you practice external rotation each time you come into Warrior 2 (Virabhadrasana II) or take your front leg into Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Raja Kapotasana) or engage in most standing and seated poses. In a practice that is about finding balance—and not just the kind you experience while standing on one leg—it’s interesting that there isn’t more emphasis on hip internal rotation.

Why You Need Hip Internal Rotation

“This movement is often overlooked in most exercise modalities,” says Antonietta Vicario , yoga teacher and chief training officer at Pvolve, perhaps best known as Jennifer Aniston’s workout regime.

“Our hips need to move through their full range to stay mobile. Any dominance of specific movement patterns can create an imbalance in the body, which can lead to overuse and even injury over time,” says Vicario. “When the hips are tight, other compensatory muscle patterns will take over, which can lead to movement dysfunction.”

The internal hip rotation muscles also contribute to overall well-being before, during, and after menopause, explains Vicario. “During the menopause transition, our bodies start to lose muscle mass. We need to offset this through weight and resistance training,” she says. “Training lower body strength, mobility, and stability proactively protects our movement longevity.”

Practicing internal hip rotation also allows for better blood flow to the back of the joint capsule, explains yoga teacher Nicole Sciacca , which encourages “reduced inflammation, articular resiliency, and lubrication for the joint itself.” A Functional Range Conditioning mobility specialist, and Kinstretch teacher, Sciacca ensures her training includes internal rotation because it helps her hip joints feel better. “After 30-plus years of dance and nearly 20 years of yoga practice, I like to think I’m doing my due diligence in training my internal rotation now,” she says.

Strong hip internal rotators support a well-functioning pelvic floor. Lauren Ohayon is a pelvic floor specialist, yoga teacher, and founder of Restore Your Core and has studied functional range conditioning (FRC), which trains the body in movements that mimic everyday activities. Ohayon has observed many dysfunctional issues in students who lack internal rotation mobility, including lower back pain and a hypertonic (overly tense) pelvic floor, although she is careful to point out that the relationship is not necessarily causal.

Adding internal hip rotation to your yoga repertoire may offer even more unexpected benefits. “The greatest predictors of longevity are the strength and flexibility of our legs,” explains Reuben Chen, MD , board-certified sports medicine physician, holistic pain management expert, and chief medical advisor at Sunrider International .

“It is important to provide some balance to the muscles around the joints, as well as balance to the entire joint,” says Chen. “If there is imbalance in the musculature due to movements that cause extreme motions on the joints, such as with gymnastics or extreme yoga positions, this will cause uneven wear in the joints which can lead to a breakdown of the cartilage.”

Think back to all the time you’ve spent cringing while holding your knees apart in Goddess Pose (Utkata Konasana) and Bound Angle Pose (Baddha Konasana). You may want to start catching up by practicing poses that target the opposite movement.

How Do You Practice Hip Internal Rotation?

Internal rotation stretches aren’t the most comfortable for everyone. “The lack of ‘cushion’ between the head of the femur and the joint capsule itself are what make it such a bizarre feeling for most and that does not typically go away over time,” says Chen. However, he warns students to discern between discomfort and impingement, which is when the head of the femur bone is displaced or jammed into the hip socket.

For example, sometimes in Garudasana (Eagle Pose) , there can be a sharp pressure at the top of the inner thigh bone. Some experience a similar sensation in Virasana (Hero Pose) , which also requires internal rotation. Or you may not. It’s entirely personal based on your unique skeletal structure.

How to Include Hip Internal Rotation in Yoga

Ancient yoga texts, such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Gheranda Samhita, feature an abundance of externally-rotated seated poses. One potential reason why yoga shows a bias toward this type of hip movement is the physical poses were designed to help us sit in meditation. The cross-legged meditation position requires external rotation in the hips.

Contemporary teachers may feel reluctant to adapt or change the “classic” poses in an effort to honor the tradition of yoga. But many well-respected teachers consider bringing a more balanced approach to be aligned with the intention of yoga. “It never seemed right that yoga was very external biased without a balance of internal,” says Ohayon.

Understanding that each pose was made up by someone who saw purpose in its shape can help provide context for the practice at large. Longtime yoga teacher James Morrison explains, “Every yoga pose ever invented is a variation on another yoga pose and/or product of the imagination of the practitioner.”

6 Hip Internal Rotation Exercises for Your Yoga Practice

Although the following exercises for hip internal rotation aren’t found in classic yoga texts, you can easily incorporate them into your practice. If you’re already familiar with some of these movements, consider increasing the frequency with which you practice them.

Woman lying on her back on a yoga mat practicing windshield wipers

1. Windshield Wipers

You may have encountered this pose as a quick stretch at the beginning of yoga class or as a transition in between twists. But when you slow it down, it makes an excellent hip internal rotation stretch. Make sure your feet are wider than hip-width before letting your legs fall to one side. That distance creates space for the internal rotation in the hip of the top thigh.

How to: Lie down on your back, bend your knees, and bring your feet as wide as your mat. Let  your knees fall over to your right side as you roll onto the edges of your feet. Your legs will be staggered. Remain here for 10 breaths. Come back to center and then switch sides. You can also practice this while seated with your hands behind you for support.

To intensify the stretch, explore resting the ankle of your bottom leg on your top thigh and allowing the added weight to help you deepen the twist, although remember to discern between discomfort and pain. If you experience any pain in your knees, immediately release the stretch.

2. Deer Pose

A common yin yoga pose that’s been making its way into some vinyasa classes, Deer brings the hip of the back leg into internal rotation. The stretch is popular among FRC communities, where it’s known as 90-90 given the shape it makes in your legs.

How to: From sitting, bring your right leg in front of you so your shin is almost parallel to the short side of the mat. Bring your left knee out to the side so your thigh is parallel to your front shin and your shin is perpendicular to your thigh. Your legs will be in an “S” shape consisting of two 90-degree angles.

Sit upright and press your fingertips onto the mat or blocks. Stay here or slowly lean your chest forward. Stay here for 10 breaths. If you’re folded forward, slowly walk your hands back and sit upright. Lean onto your right hip and swing your left leg forward. Pause with your legs straight in front of you and then switch sides.

3. Lunge Variation

Ohayon likes to incorporate internal rotation when she teaches a lunge. As with Windshield Wipers, this variation works only when your feet are wide enough apart to allow space for your back leg to internally rotate.

How to: Come into a lunge with your right foot forward and your hands on blocks on either side of your front foot. Shift your back foot to the left about six inches. Begin to internally rotate your back leg so your toes begin to turn inward. As you circle, keep the movement isolated to your thigh bone so your pelvis remains stable and your hip bones continue to face the mat. Your front leg and foot will probably want to roll outward in external rotation, so press into your front heel to counteract that. Imagine your thighs are rolling inward toward each other. Stay here for several breaths.

Return to your lunge and then step through Plank or Downward Facing Dog before switching sides.

Woman practicing Warrior 3 with hands on blocks

4. Warrior 3 (Virabhadrasana III) Variation

Ohayon teaches her students to come into this Warrior 3 variation from the Lunge Variation discussed above, which further strengthens the hip internal rotators of your back leg.

How to: Come into the Lunge Variation above and walk your blocks a few inches in front of your shoulders. Maintain the internal rotation action of your back leg as you slowly lift it and straighten your standing leg, coming into Warrior 3. Your focus is more on internal rotation than balance, so consider keeping your hands on blocks. Stay here for several breaths. Slowly lower your lifted foot alongside your standing foot and come to standing before exploring your other side.

Woman practicing yoga with her legs crossed to focus on hip internal rotation

This exercise challenges not only your hip internal rotation muscles but your balance. Using blocks beneath your hands can help you navigate the field trip to the other side of your mat with more steadiness.

How to: Come into the Lunge Variation above with your right foot forward and your hands on blocks. Begin to walk your hands and blocks to the outside of your right leg and place your blocks beneath your shoulders. Roll onto the outer pinky-toe edge of your left foot. Now roll onto the outer edge of your front right foot. You might need to maintain a bend in your front knee. Start to straighten both legs as you draw your thighs toward each other. Breathe here.

Slowly walk your hands back toward your front foot and come back to a Lunge. If you like, practice Plank or Downward Dog before practicing it on your left side.

6. Three-Legged Dog Circles

You may already practice these slow and subtle circular movements without knowing they’re a form of controlled articular rotation (CARS), a type of movement that can support long-term joint health and mobility. Sciacca and other teachers commonly incorporate CARS into classic poses, such as Downward Facing Dog.

How to: Come into Downward-Facing Dog. Lift your right leg behind you and bend your knee 90 degrees so the bottom of your foot faces the ceiling. Start to make extremely small and slow circles with your thigh bone. Keep your pelvis stable so your hip bones continue to face the mat as you circle, taking your thigh just a few degrees to the right, then inward toward center (this is internal rotation), and then back to starting. Make 5 circles. Come back to Down Dog and switch legs. You can also practice this from hands and knees or standing at a wall.

Sophie rode in a carriage during today's parade along with her daughter, Lady Louise Windsor , who wore a stylish blue and white floral dress and a pale blue hat from Sophie's collection. Though the duo were caught in a bit of rain during the procession, they remained all smiles as they made their appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony with the rest of the royal family.

The wife of Prince Edward —King Charles's youngest brother—Sophie has had a busy roster of events as a working royal in recent months, during the absences of Charles and Kate, both of whom began undergoing cancer treatment earlier this year. While Charles has recently returned to public duties , today has been an exception for Kate, who in a new letter released yesterday clarified that her chemotherapy treatment is expected to last several more months. While it's not currently clear when she might resume full working duties , she also said that she's hoping to make a showing at other royal events throughout the summer, as her health allows.

Hip Anatomy, Function and Common Problems

The hip joint is a ball-and-socket type joint and is formed where the thigh bone (femur) meets the pelvis. The femur has a ball-shaped head on its end that fits into a socket formed in the pelvis, called the acetabulum.  Large ligaments, tendons, and muscles around the hip joint hold the bones (ball and socket) in place and keep it from dislocating.

Hip bones from the front

Normally, a smooth cushion of shiny white hyaline (or articular) cartilage about 1/4 inch thick covers the femoral head and the acetabulum. The articular cartilage is kept slick by fluid made in the synovial membrane (joint lining). Synovial fluid and articular cartilage are a very slippery combination—3 times more slippery than skating on ice and 4 to 10 times more slippery than a metal on plastic hip replacement. Synovial fluid is what allows us to flex our joints under great pressure without wear. Since the cartilage is smooth and slippery, the bones move against each other easily and without pain.

When the cartilage is damaged, whether secondary to osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear type arthritis) or trauma, joint motion can become painful and limited.

The hip joint is one of the largest joints in the body and is a major weight-bearing joint. Weight bearing stresses on the hip during walking can be 5 times a person’s body weight. A healthy hip can support your weight and allow you to move without pain. Changes in the hip from disease or injury will significantly affect your gait and place abnormal stress on joints above and below the hip.

It takes great force to seriously damage the hip because of the strong, large muscles of the thighs that support and move the hip.

Anatomical Terms

Anatomical terms allow us to describe the body and body motions more precisely. Instead of your doctor simply saying that “the patient knee hurts”,  he or she can say that “the patient’s knee hurts anterolaterally”.  Identifying specific areas of pain helps to guide the next steps in treatment or work-up. Below are some anatomic terms doctors use to describe location (applied to the hip):

  • Anterior — the abdominal side (front) of the hip
  • Posterior — the back side of the hip
  • Medial — the side of the hip closest to the spine
  • Lateral — the side of the hip farthest from the spine
  • Abduction — move away from the body (raising the leg away from midline i.e. towards the side)
  • Adduction — move toward the body (lowering the leg toward midline i.e. from the side)
  • example: the knee is proximal to the ankle
  • example: the ankle is distal to the knee
  • Inferior — located beneath, under or below; under surface

Anatomy of the Hip

Joint capsule of the hip

Like the shoulder , the hip is a ball-and-socket joint, but is much more stable. The stability in the hip begins with a deep socket—the acetabulum. Additional stability is provided by the surrounding muscles, hip capsule and associated ligaments.  If you think of the hip joint in layers, the deepest layer is bone, then ligaments of the joint capsule, then muscles are on top. Various nerves and blood vessels supply the muscles and bones of the hip.

Bony Structures of the Hip

The hip is formed where the thigh bone (femur) meets the three bones that make up the pelvis: the ilium, the pubis (pubic bone) and the ischium.  These three bones converge to form the acetabulum, a deep socket on the outer edge of the pelvis. By adulthood, these three bones are completely fused and the pelvis is effectively a single bone.

Acetabulum in the pelvis

The femur is the longest bone in the body. The neck of the femur connects the femoral head with the shaft of the femur.  The neck ends at the greater and lesser trochanters, which are bony prominences of the femur that various muscles attach to. The greater trochanter serves as the site of attachment for the abductor and external rotator muscles which are important stabilizers of the hip joint. This is the prominent part of your hip that you can actually feel on the outer aspect of your thigh. The lesser trochanter serves as the attachment site of the iliopsoas tendon, one of the muscles that allows you to bend your hip.

It is important to remember that the actual hip joint lies deep in the groin area. This is important, because true hip joint issues are typically associated with groin pain.

The Hip Joint

The hip joint is a ball and socket type joint.  The femoral head (ball) fits into the acetabulum (socket) of the pelvis. The large round head of the femur rotates and glides within the acetabulum. The depth of the acetabulum is further increased by a fibrocartilagenous labrum that attaches to the outer rim of the acetabulum. It acts to deepen the socket and to add additional stability to the hip joint.  The labrum can become torn and cause symptoms such as pain, weakness, clicking, and instability of the hip.

Bones of the Hip Joint

There are numerous structures that contribute stability to the hip:

  • The ball and socket bony structure
  • The capsule and its associated ligaments: e.g. iliofemoral ligament, pubofemoral ligament
  • The surrounding muscles including the abductors (gluteus medius and minimus) and external rotators (gemelli muscles, piriformis, the obturators).

Hip Ligaments

The liofemoral ligament in the hip

The stability of the hip is increased by the strong ligaments that encircle the hip (the iliofemoral, pubofemoral, and ischiofemoral ligaments). These ligaments completely encompass the hip joint and form the joint capsule. The iliofemoral ligament is considered by most experts to be the strongest ligament in the body. The ligamentum teres is a small tubular structure that connects the head of the femur to the acetabulum. It contains the  artery of the ligamentum teres. In infants, this serves as a relatively important source of blood supply to the head of the femur.  In adults, the ligamentum teres is thought by most to be more of a vestigial structure that serves little function.

The ischiofemoral ligament of the hip

Muscles of the Hip

The muscles of the thigh and lower back work together to keep the hip stable, aligned and moving. It is the muscles of the hip that allow the movements of the hip:

  • flexion – bend
  • extension – straighten
  • abduction – leg move away from midline
  • adduction – leg moves back towards midline
  • external rotation (allows for the foot to point outwards)
  • internal rotation (allows for the foot to point inward)

The hip muscles are divided up into three basic groups based on their location: anterior muscles (front), posterior (back), and medial (inside). The muscles of the anterior thigh consist of the quadriceps (or quads): vastus medialis, intermedius, lateralis and rectus femoris muscles. The quads make up about 70% of the thigh’s muscle mass. The main functions of the quads are flexion (bending) of the hip and extension (straightening) of the knee.

The gluteal and hamstring muscles, as well as the external rotators of the hip are located in the buttocks and posterior thigh. The gluteal muscles consist of the gluteus maximum, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus. The gluteus maximus is the main hip extensor and helps keep up the normal tone of the fascia lata or iliotibial (IT) band, which is the long, sheet-like tendon on the side of your thigh. It helps with motion of the hip, but perhaps more importantly, acts to help stabilize the knee joint.

Gluteus medius and minimus are the main abductors of the hip —that is, they move the leg away from the midline of the body (using the spine as a midline reference point). They also are the main internal rotators of the hip (i.e. turn the foot inwards). The gluteus medius and minimus are also important stabilizers of the hip joint and help to keep the pelvis level as we walk.

The tensor fascia lata (TFL) is another abductor of the hip, which, along with the gluteus maximus, attaches to the IT band.  The IT band is a common cause of lateral (outside) hip, thigh, and knee pain.

The medial muscles of the hip are involved in the adduction of the leg i.e. bringing the leg back towards the midline. These muscles include the adductors (adductor magnus, adductor longus, adductor brevis, pectineus, gracilis). Obturator externus also helps to adduct the leg.

The external rotator muscles (piriformis, gemelli, obturator internus) of the hip are located in the buttock area and assist in lateral rotation of the hip (out-toeing). Lateral rotation is needed for crossing the legs.

Blood Vessels and Nerves of the Hip

Sciatic nerve

Nerves carry signals from the brain to the muscles to move the hip and carry signals from the muscles back to the brain about pain, pressure and temperature. The main nerves of the hip that supply the muscles in the hip include the femoral, obturator, and sciatic nerves.

The sciatic nerve is the most commonly recognized nerve in the hip and thigh. The sciatic nerve is large—as big around as your thumb—and travels beneath the gluteus maximus down the back of the thigh where it branches to supply the muscles of the leg and foot. Hip dislocations can cause injury to the sciatic nerve.

The blood supply to the hip is extensive and comes from branches of the internal and external iliac arteries: the femoral, obturator, superior and inferior gluteal arteries. The femoral artery is well-known because of its use in cardiac catheterization. You can feel its pulse in your groin area.  It travels from deep within the hip down the thigh and down to the knee. It is the continuation of the external iliac artery which lies within the pelvis. The main blood supply to the femoral head comes from vessels that branch off of the femoral artery:  the lateral and medial femoral circumflex arteries.  Disruption of these arteries can lead to osteonecrosis (bone death) of the femoral head. These arteries can become disrupted with hip fractures and hip dislocations.

Bursae are fluid filled sacs lined with a synovial membrane which produce synovial fluid. Bursae are often found near joints. Their function is to lessen the friction between tendon and bone, ligament and bone, tendons and ligaments, and between muscles. There are as many as 20 bursae around the hip. Inflammation or infection of the bursa called bursitis.

The trochanteric bursa is located between the greater trochanter (the bony prominence on the femur) and the muscles and tendons that cross over the greater trochanter. This bursa can get irritated if the IT band is too tight. This bursa is a common cause of lateral thigh (hip) pain. Two other bursa that can get inflamed are the iliopsoas bursa, located under the iliopsoas muscle and the bursa located over the ischial tuberosity (the bone you sit on).

Common Problems of the Hip

Simple dislocation from upward pressure

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Dislocation (see image above of simple dislocation)
  • Femoroacetabular impingement
  • Labral tear
  • IT band syndrome
  • Snapping hip syndrome
  • Aseptic or Avascular necrosis
  • Congenital Dislocation
  • Acetabular dysplasia
  • Legg-Perthes disease

Surgery of the Hip

  • Hip Replacement
  • Hip arthroscopy
  • Hip fracture fixation
  • Hip preservation surgery

The hip joint is largely responsible for mobility. So any injury, trauma, or disease that affects its function can significantly reduce a person’s independence.

Lastly, there are many conditions in and around the hip and even conditions of the spine, that can cause pain in the hip area.  Therefore, if you suspect that you might be having a problem with your hip(s), don’t hesitate to visit a trusted doctor for further evaluation.

Video Conference Featured Speakers

The SXSW 2024 Conference set the stage for a remarkable celebration of Def Jam Recordings' 40th anniversary. Placed within the Music Careers track, the Featured Session Def Jam Renewed: The Hip-Hop Legend’s Next 40 Years offered attendees a deep dive into the iconic label's history, its current position, and its future. The session was graced by influential figures from within the industry, including Chuck D of Public Enemy, multi-faceted rapper Lady London , and Tunji Balogun , CEO of Def Jam Recordings, with Brian Biniak of Bandcamp as the moderator.

“I think in this era, technology is bringing creatives closer together and I think it’s breaking down walls. And hopefully in the future, we’ll have a more connected global conversation of creatives and music and artists. You can see and hear how different genres are influencing one another. Hip hop is in every genre now.” – Tunji Balogun

Chuck D, known for his groundbreaking work, shared insights into the essence of hip-hop and the pivotal role of talent evaluation in shaping its landscape. He emphasized the need for a strong ecosystem surrounding the artistry, similar to what exists in sports, where individuals outside the game contribute significantly to its strength. Chuck D emphasized, "What hip-hop needs and what the Def Jams need is like a whole bunch of people that are able to evaluate the talent... In music, we need a lot of people that’s outside of the artistry who are favored to sell the game."

Lady London, an artist under Def Jam Recordings, provided a glimpse into her multifaceted approach to her career. Beyond her role as a rapper, Lady London envisions herself as a brand, embracing various facets of creativity and entrepreneurship. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, "...as I began to cultivate not only my career but the foresight I have for myself in the next ten to twenty years, I was like, I would love to be a brand. Beyond my own artistry, brands are forever. I’m not one-dimensional; I’m not just a rapper. I’m all of these things that make up Lady London."

Join the dialogue on the past, present, and future of Def Jam Recordings and gain a deeper appreciation for the visionaries driving its legacy forward. Watch the full Featured Session Def Jam Renewed: The Hip-Hop Legend’s Next 40 Years below.

Everything you need for ‘bleisure’ travel can be found at Hotel Toranomon Hills in Tokyo

Stay, work and play in the hip Azabudai-Toranomon Hills business district, where seamless connectivity, fun dining and local immersions are literally at the hotel’s doorstep.

It was 5pm and the setting sun was cloaking the Tokyo skyline in a rosy glow. At the light-dappled 11th floor lounge of Hotel Toranomon Hills, The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, I may have found the perfect workspace.

The 3,800 sq ft maisonette-style space has long tables, snug sofa seats, plenty of well-placed power outlets and complimentary refreshments. Tapping on the laptop to a panoramic city vista framed by six-metre-high windows was really not too shabby. I had just arrived and was already thinking how to maximise the upper floor’s well-appointed shower rooms and cosy sleeping pods on my day of departure.

According to market research and consulting firm Allied Market Research , the global “bleisure” industry — travel that combines work and pleasure — was estimated at US$315.3 billion (S$425.5 billion) in 2022 and projected to reach US$731.4 billion by 2032. In a 2023 survey by Expedia, 76 per cent of business travellers, especially the millennials (43 per cent) and Gen Zs (38 per cent), said that they plan to incorporate leisure activities into their upcoming trips.

The Unbound Collection is where Hyatt parks its storied luxury independent properties and their first in Tokyo targets those who want work efficiency and connectivity alongside local discovery.

The Shisui hotel makes you want to extend your stay beyond just a daytrip in Nara, Japan

The interiors of Hotel Toranomon Hills were designed by Danish firm Space Copenhagen to be a respite within from the city’s chaotic energy without. Walking to my 14th floor Deluxe Twin Suite from the elevators was like a stroll through torii gates as pearly lamps on matte red walls referencing Japanese lacquer lit up the corridors. Earth tones and muted palettes meet the occasional quirky “melted” disco balls in the lobby and restaurant while the Japanese-Scandinavian aesthetic is expressed in curved furnishings and clean lines in the 205 rooms and suites. A couch and small table next to full-length windows meant that a functional workspace or cosy musing corner was available any time of the day, distracting views included.

In Japan, a floating ryokan that lets guests enjoy stunning views and island-hop

I was half expecting udon curry bowls and run-of-the-mill steaks as most business hotels are wont to offer, but Dutch chef-entrepreneur Sergio Herman , who oversees the hotel’s dining options and has a bevy of Michelin-starred establishments to his name, obviously had loftier ideas.

the hip tourist photos

Le Pristine Tokyo is one part casual fine-dining restaurant and one part all-day cafe. The restaurant menu trots out refined European plates that marry Japanese ingredients with those from Herman’s hometown of Zeeland. Outstanding flavours without ostentation marked dishes such as the signature lobster pasta with handmade orecchiette, clams and squid; venison with foie gras, mizkan and quince; and Jerusalem artichoke with wanashi (a species of Japanese pear) and roasted buckwheat toppings. By the time we reached the collapsed tiramisu, we were reflections of the yummy mess. But a nightcap at the cafe’s bar counter was in order and the affable Vince whipped up a delicious espresso martini with a dash of house-made vanilla syrup to the Kahlua and espresso concoction.

the hip tourist photos

Breakfast at Le Pristine Cafe was equally stellar.  How does one make something as simple as egg white omelettes with spinach, sesame seeds and herbs taste so good? The basic Japanese breakfast of  “tamago kake gohan”  (rice topped or mixed with a raw egg) was upgraded to a superbly savoury “Le Pristine” rice bowl of poached egg, pecorino, speck and gremolata sauce. The stir-fried Asian noodles were pitch-perfect in their aromatic sesame oil and soy sauce seasonings. They were all polished off alongside fruit and pastry pickings from the buffet spread.

LOCAL EXPLORATIONS

The hotel’s convenient location in the 49-storey Toranomon Hills Station Tower makes it a breeze to explore the immediate neighbourhoods and the rest of the city.

the hip tourist photos

From the basement Toranomon Hills subway, the Hibiya line zips you to shopping districts like Ginza and Roppongi within 10 minutes. There’re over 70 retail stores and restaurants in the building itself, including the T-Market Food Hall, a microbrewery and a whisky bar as well as rotating art exhibitions and events at Tokyo Node. Take the link-bridge, whose wide space is decorated with quirky art installations, to Toranomon Hills Business Tower where there are more restaurants, shops and the Toranomon Yokocho, a lively indoor alleyway filled with izakayas and a craft gin distillery. Round the corner from the hotel is the Kikuchi Kanjitsu Memorial Tomo Museum, which showcases ceramic pieces by local artisans, the TeamLab Borderless digtal art museum and the hilltop Atago Shrine for introspective reflection. I found an old-school cafe Coffee Embassy Kamiyacho, which was decked in leather seats and dark wood interiors. As I tucked into my coffee and cinnamon toast with clotted cream to jazz music in the background, there was a different sort of fuzzy warmth to the usual Tokyo jaunt. And I loved that a modern hotel could be found so near to it all.
