My teenage son thought it would be fun. We went to eat and than decided yes. The rates were good. We walked across to there shop and we signed waivers. I was impressed they made us wear disposable hair coverings under our helmets to prevent sharing bugs or diseases. We all got goggles and we were on our way. We did the 1 hour and it was a great time. I’ve done quads on other trips but this group went up and down hills sometimes fast. The guides even stopped for photo oops. My teen daughter and I looked at each other a dozen times during this amazing journey to say “this is an incredible day.” Our tour guide, Hamid, showed us stunning desert vistas and ancient villages, all via an exciting quad ATV. From Ait Ben Haddou to Fint Oasis, we had so many favorite moments, and among them having lunch (best tagine of the trip) overlooking a lush oasis and having a fascinating discussion with Hamid. He has deep knowledge of the area and history and was happy to share with us and answer our many questions. Over our day, Hamid showed not only us but those we met along the way many kindnesses. He taught us how to pour tea properly, introduced us to a women’s artisan collective, took dozens of amazing photos (stopping at so many picturesque spots). We will never forget this day. And it was easy to get to the start point (which is nearly across the street from Ait Ben Haddou) from our riad near Ouarzazate. The communication before the trip was also excellent. Hamid also runs a company that arranges many activities and custom multi-day tours. For our next Morocco trip, Hamid will the first person we call to put together a multi-day tour. 4x4 Sahara Desert

Sahara desert tours by 4×4 – the authentic desert experience.

Our Sahara Desert tours include the remote Erg Chigaga dunes in the Iriqui National Park. Given our connections to the desert region and our background (read more in the section About Us) we consider this to be the authentic Sahara desert experience. The Erg Chigaga dunes lie in the region west of the village of M’hamid El Ghezlane, within the Iriqui National Park.

The dunes of Erg Chigaga are the highlight (2 hours off-road journey from M’hamid village where the tarmac road ends) but the journey across the desert is a wonderful experience and will allow you to appreciate, arguably, some of the finest remote scenery in Morocco. Erg Chigaga dunes reach 300ft in height and span approx. 40km.

Visiting this region of the Sahara, you will complete a circuit across the desert, through the national park, as you will leave Erg Chigaga in the opposite direction, joining the road again at Foum Zguid after 3 hours off-road drive (around 90km), crossing the dried salt lake, Iriqui, and fossil beds. To reach the dunes of Erg Chebbi, next to Merzouga village, you don’t require any specialist driving or knowledge of the area, so many people can rent their own car and drive to Merzouga, then camel-trek a short way to the dunes from the village.

Highlights of the Desert

The terrain of the Sahara is shaped by wind (the wind can be fierce occasionally!), sometimes rain, and includes not only sand dunes, but also hamada, dry valleys & lakes and salt flats. You may also be surprised at seeing so much vegetation in the desert, including Tamarisk and Acacia trees and palms – April and October are green times of year here.

Once we come off-road our driving time each morning/afternoon will be no more than 2 hours at a time and we will be mostly following the rough outline of a piste for vehicles, necessary to respect the delicate environment around us and to make your ride as comfortable as possible. That’s not to say that we can expect to meet a lot of traffic in the desert! This is still wild territory and the driving thrilling – after all the former Paris-Dakar route passed close by.

However, we will likely stop to meet nomadic families that still live in the region and come across other evidence of human existence here; including the abandoned settlement and agricultural land of Erg Smar close to the Draa River bed (where once approx. 35 families lived), a nomads’ cemetery, nomads’ former souk, a marabout (shrine of a holy man), deep wells, and grazing land for animals still used today.

Getting there

It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that travelling into the desert is like crossing a frontier into another land. There’s a real sense of excitement as you see the first traces of sand covering the road in front of you, once you get closer to leaving the tarmac behind and to heading off-road along rough tracks & pistes towards the virtual unknown.

The journey south to the desert is a wonderful adventure in its own right as much as being in the heart of the dunes is. Some of our programs may entail up to 9 hours of driving in a day through spectacular scenery. Our routes cross the Atlas and Anti-Atlas mountain ranges via winding roads to dramatic passes, follow the Draa River valley and date palm oases, traverse barren hamada (stone plateaus) or follow corridors of rock walls.

You will be driving through some truly fascinating scenery, arguably the finest remote scenery in Morocco.

• Exchanging money before your trip can be difficult due to Morocco’s currency laws that prevent you from bringing more than 1000 Moroccan Dirhams in or out of the country (the equivalent of about US$106). Set aside time at the airport upon arrival to exchange your currency.
• Visitors, like Moroccans, are expected to dress conservatively, especially women. Cover your shoulders, knees and chest as much as possible.
• Always ask permission before taking photographs of locals, particularly in rural areas. Some believe cameras can capture a person’s soul using black magic, so asking is always a respectful gesture.
• Be sure to pack layers, as temperatures can drop drastically at night, particularly in the winter. At the same time, daytime temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius in the summer!
• As a Muslim country, Friday is the weekly holy day in Morocco. Many shops will be closed on Fridays (particularly after midday) so locals can attend prayer, so buy what you need beforehand.

Il Marocco è un paese che offre davvero numerosissime attrattive e posti degni di essere visitati.

Se volessimo stilare un elenco dei luoghi più belli da visitare sicuramente al primo posto troveremmo il sud con il deserto sabbioso Erg Chebbi , silenzioso e dagli splendidi colori dorati e le immense oasi di palme, rigogliose e ricche di fascino.

Al Sud, inoltre, è possibile ancora rivivere atmosfere antiche nei villaggi fortificati (Ksar) e nei castelli di fango e paglia (Kasbah) di cui è ricco il paese, senza contare le incredibile gole del Todra , gole intagliate nella montagna con pareti alte fino a 200 metri dove è anche possibile praticare free-climbing e le splendide gole del Dades , con i suoi canyon che non hanno niente da invidiare a quelli statunitensi.

Al secondo posto troveremmo certamente le splendide città imperiali : l’affascinante Marrakech con i suoi colori, i suoi palazzi imperiali e la sua vitalità; la bella Fes , dove nel souk sembra di tornare indietro nel tempo; la deliziosa Meknes , più piccola rispetto alle altre città imperiali, ma comunque un gioiellino da non perdere e la maestosa Rabat , con i suoi palazzi, la bella medina bianca e azzurra e la splendida vista sull’oceano.

Al terzo posto potremmo mettere senz’altro la bella Essaouira, con la sua caratteristica medina bianca patrimonio dell’UNESCO e la costa Atlantica con Agadir, dove si respira l’aria frizzante dell’oceano, si può praticare surf e dove in inverno il clima è sempre mite. Lungo la costa troviamo anche la splendida Legzira beach , dove due grandi archi di pietra si gettano a capofitto nell’oceano, creando un paesaggio suggestivo e di rara bellezza.

Montagne e trekking

Per gli amanti della montagna sull’Alto Atlante si trovano diversi picchi di tutto rispetto: il Toubkal , la vetta più alta, infatti, raggiunge i 4167 metri . Qui è possibile praticare trekking in primavera/estate e sciare in inverno. Anche il Medio Atlante offre panorami mozzafiato a oltre 2000 metri di altezza e neve in inverno per praticare vari sport invernali .

La foresta dei cedri

Nella foresta dei cedri del Marocco, sempre sul Medio Atlante, è inoltre possibile incontrare le famose scimmie di barberia , un tipo di babbuino di media grandezza che vive in questa foresta e si avvicina volentieri ai turisti. All’interno del paese troviamo poi anche le famose cascate di Ouzoud , con il loro salto di oltre 100 metri, che si attestano tra le più alte del Nord Africa.

Deserto sabbioso dell’Erg Chigaga

Senza parlare del Profondo sud con il deserto sabbioso dell’Erg Chigaga , che si estende fino alla Mauritania, la splendida valle del Draa con il suo lunghissimo palmeto, la città di Taroudant con le sue maestose mura e i villaggi berberi di cui è ricco il sud.

Tra le città dobbiamo anche ricordare Casablanca , immensa con i suoi 8 milioni di abitanti e con la sua grandiosa moschea di Hassan II che è la più grande del Marocco, la bianca Tangeri , a ridosso dell’Europa, dove si respira un mix di aria europea e africana.

La belllissima costa mediterranea del Marocco

Non possiamo inoltre dimenticare la bella costa mediterranea con tante spiagge dorate, la splendida cittadina azzurra di Chefchauen , abbarbicata sulle verdeggianti montagne del Rif, a ridosso del Mediterraneo e il famoso sito archeologico romano di Volubilis, patrimonio dell’UNESCO e con numerosi mosaici ben conservati.

Morocco 7 Days Tour From Casablanca

This tour consists of nice, professional driver that will take you from place to place in Morocco, rather than a tour guide that is with you for the entire 7 days. It was challenging to sit in the car for hours day to day though it is a must as some locations are 4-5 hours away from eachother. The tour included must visit cities and great accommodation and hosts. The inclusion of more guided day tours were expected at each location as you're mostly with the driver. Travelling during Ramadan was challenging for tourist food options and also for the driver towards the end of the day. Some incredible sights to see and the highlight has to be Merzouga desert!! Definitely recommend to those short on time wishing to see the highlights.

Totally Morocco Tour from Casablanca

As a group of 3 we found the tour to be friendly informative and relaxed. Our tour guide Sila in Casablanca was really good, funny and patient as we had tour buddy’s that had mobility issues. Worst tour guide in Marrakech needs to be more helpful. Best hotel in Marrakech worst hotel in Kasbah. Overall we had a great time and met some fantastic people and saw some amazing sights. The camel ride was the best! Would book with tour radar again.

Our tour guide, Hamid, was wonderful! He gets 5 stars!! About the tour….. READ CAREFULLY! If you are a lover of history and historic sites, this trip is for you! If you enjoy long car rides through the country, this trip is for you! You will stay in a different riad (hotel) almost every night, so pack lightly. You will drive to each new city every day for 3-9 hours depending on where you are headed. The riads are beautiful- bring your own wash cloths and wipes. There are several tours throughout the day. Sometimes tours end with a visit to the showroom with the expectation that you will purchase goods. The food is delicious! The Sahara Desert was the most memorable! The camel ride was an experience of a lifetime. The vendors sell the most beautiful goods. Try to get shopping done with the tour guide to avoid pushy vendors. Learn how to bargain and understand their money. I enjoyed Marrakesh and definitely want to go back there! My recommendation to Morocco Tours is to communicate more up front. Provide names of hotels, tour guide, phone numbers and changes ahead of time. More communication!!! Again, we LOVE Hamid!!!
