Gia Lai is a beautiful mountainous province in the northern part of Vietnam’s Central Highlands region. It holds the distinction of being the second largest province in Vietnam.

The best time to visit Gia Lai is during the dry season, which lasts from November to April . During this time, the weather is sunny and pleasant, making it ideal for travel. In November and December , you’ll be greeted with vibrant yellow rice fields, blooming wild sunflowers, and colorful cassava flowers. From February to April , the province is adorned with white coffee flowers, creating a picturesque scene.

Towards the end of the year, you’ll have the opportunity to partake in traditional festivals celebrated by the local ethnic minorities. These festivals include the new rice festival, the harvest festival, the gong festival, the village worship festival, the buffalo crash festival, and more. It’s a great chance to immerse yourself in the rich culture and traditions of the indigenous people.

From May to October , Gia Lai experiences the rainy season, with July to September having prolonged rains. Due to its tropical monsoon climate, Gia Lai tends to have high humidity and rainfall during this time. It’s not recommended to visit during the rainy season, as it can be challenging to move around and explore the landscapes.

Traveling by plane

The quickest way to reach Gia Lai is by airplane. Flights between Hanoi and Pleiku, as well as between Ho Chi Minh City and Pleiku, operate daily. The route from Da Nang to Pleiku has flights on all days except Monday and Wednesday. Here are the estimated prices for specific flight routes:

• The average airfare from Hanoi to Pleiku ranges from 676,000 VND to 1,038,900 VND.
• The average airfare from Ho Chi Minh City to Pleiku ranges from 574,000 VND to 752,900 VND.
• The average airfare from Hai Phong to Pleiku is around 1,018,900 VND.

Pleiku Airport is located approximately 3 kilometers from the city center. Upon arrival, you can arrange for an airport shuttle or take a taxi to reach the city center.

Traveling by coach

Gia Lai has a well-developed road transport system, primarily consisting of national highways. This means you can easily travel to Gia Lai by coach, with ticket prices starting from as low as 250,000 VND.

However, it’s important to note that traveling by coach is an economical option, but it may take longer. If you’re departing from Hanoi, the journey can take approximately 20 hours. You can buy tickets at Giap Bat, Nuoc Ngam stations.

On the other hand, if you’re starting from Ho Chi Minh City, you’ll take Highway 14, passing through Binh Phuoc, Dak Nong, Buon Ma Thuot, and eventually arriving in Pleiku city. It’s a thrilling route that offers beautiful landscapes and the opportunity to explore different regions of Vietnam.

T’Nung Lake

T’Nung Lake is truly a sight to behold. Locals often refer to T’Nung as the “bottomless lake” because its depth remains a mystery. It’s also called “Sea Lake” due to its vast expanse, spanning over 220 hectares.

Chu Dang Ya Volcano

Chu Dang Ya, another inactive volcano from ancient times, offers a mesmerizing experience. The best time to visit this place is when the mountain is adorned with sprawling green fields of taro and sweet potatoes. From late October to early December, the mountainside comes alive with vibrant yellow wild sunflowers. Most backpackers who come to Gia Lai during this period of the year describe this place as a paradise of wild sunflowers.

Yaly Hydroelectric Lake

The Yaly hydropower lake is the second largest hydroelectric plant in Vietnam, right after the Hoa Binh hydropower plant on the Da River. This impressive structure is closely tied to the magnificent Yaly waterfall, one of Vietnam’s largest waterfalls, boasting a staggering height of 42 meters.

Standing on the dam and gazing into the distance, visitors are treated to a panoramic view of the lush Ngoc Linh mountain , adorned with countless trees. Coming here, you can also explore the 600-meter long underground road that cuts through the mountain bed, where colossal ventilators and machinery are placed.

Kon Jang Rang Nature Reserve

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is still safe to travel, affirms the US embassy to Malaysia, negating US academic Bruce Gilley’s claim that it is not.

“There is no change to the US travel advisory, which remains at Level 1, the lowest level out of four,” it said in a statement.

According to the United States Bureau of Consular Affairs, Level 1 is the lowest advisory level for safety and security, between Levels 1 to 4, and 4 being “do not travel”.

At Level 1, travellers are to exercise normal precautions in the country, it said.

Checks by The Star on the US State Department’s website showed that Malaysia has been on Level 1 since its last update on July 24, 2023. Additionally, its country information on Malaysia says that the countries have healthy bilateral ties.

“Economic ties are robust, and there is a long history of people-to-people exchanges. Malaysia has a diverse democracy and is an important partner in US engagement with South-East Asia,” it said.

Earlier this week, US academician Bruce Gilley claimed in a post on X that Malaysia is not safe to travel to.

He said on the social media platform that he had left Malaysia due to safety concerns caused by an “Islamo-fascist mob whipped up by the government there”.

Recently, Universiti Malaya (UM) had invited Gilley to speak, which caused controversy.

Gilley purportedly claimed that Malaysia had pushed for a “second holocaust against the Jewish people” during his talk, and downplayed Malaysia’s ties with the United States.

After the cancellation of all events involving Gilley by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, the academician has since returned to America.

Further sparking outrage, he posted that he will not accept reimbursement for his travels from UM, choosing instead to ask the public to fund his costs via an online platform.

“(Gilley’s) social media post on the safety of travelling in Malaysia is too much. It is irresponsible and can cause anger among all Malaysians,” UM said in a statement.

I’ve been hiking through the Catskill Mountains since I was 2-years-old (OK, maybe I was more of a passenger princess back then), when my parents first bought our house in Narrowsburg, New York. There are a dozen trails within a 30 minute drive from our cabin that cut up the sides of steep inclines and take you wading through knee-high water. One summer weekend two years ago, when my husband, pup, and I planned to spend the weekend out in the woods, I realized I didn’t pack a pair of comfortable, reliable shoes . 

In an act of what I thought was desperation, we stopped in a nearby Walmart to check out the selection and find something that would get me through the weekend. At the time, I didn’t have super high hopes for the pair of $28 boots I bought, but after countless miles and trips up and down the mountain later, they’re still my go-to trail shoes. They’ve been so great, in fact, that my husband has since bought a pair for himself, too.

I grabbed a pair in the gray fog color, but the boots come in four different shades and two widths to suit nearly any style or need. 

These boots have been so good to me, that I’m ashamed to admit that I also didn’t believe that a pair this affordable could be truly waterproof. But, after being caught in several downpours while wearing them, I can say with confidence that they’ve kept my feet largely dry, while the deep, grippy traction on the bottom of each boot prevented me from slipping on slick rocks, too. Plus, this emergency purchase left me with zero time to break them in before hitting the trail for a 4-mile trek, but these shoes are so comfortable that they felt molded to my feet straight out of the box. 

With nearly 3,400 five-star ratings, it’s safe to say that plenty of other hikers agree. One reviewer said they’re so comfortable that while wearing them at home to get a feel for the boots, they forgot they had them on. Another customer added that the inside has ample cushioning to keep your feet comfortable all day long.
