The Death Mechanics for OSRS have changed a lot.

If you are a new or a returning player, it would do you good to read through this article and get familiar with these new mechanics as they are quite different.

How Dying works in OSRS

OSRS’s Death Mechanics have been split up into two phases:

  • The gravestone phase which lasts 15 minutes
  • The Death’s Office phase which has no expiration time.

Gravestones in OSRS

when you die in osrs your items will be kept inside your grave for 15 minutes.

Gravestones are now a part of OSRS meaning that your items are no longer dropped on the floor.

Once you die, you’ll have 15 minutes to run back to your place of death and retrieve your items.

After this 15 minute timer, your loot can be found in the Death’s Office and bought back for a fee depending on the value of the items.

Your gravestone is available in every single world (not only the world you died in).

In case you forgot where you died (e.g. you were AFK) you can find the location of your gravestone using the built-in mini-map of your client.

Here’s a breakdown of the retrieval fee from the GRAVESTONE:

  • Items worth 0 – 100k are FREE to retrieve
  • Items worth 100k – 1M cost 1K to retrieve (500gp for ironmen)
  • Items worth 1M – 10M cost 10k to retrieve (5k for ironmen)
  • Items worth over 10M cost 100k to retrieve (50k for ironmen)

The maximum retrieval fee is capped at 500k.

Ironmen and group ironmen accounts get a 50% discount on the retrieval fee.

Death’s Office

upon death, you can retrieve your lost items from death's office

If you happen to not make it back to your gravestone within the 15-minute time limit, your loot will be available to you inside Death’s Office.

Death’s Office can be found in a number of respawning locations around Gielinor:

  • Lumbridge Graveyard
  • Edgeville Wildy Lever
  • Falador Dungeon

Once there, you’ll be able to retrieve your items by paying a fee.

This fee is worth 5% of the value of the item and only applies to items worth more than 100k.

For example, if you lose an abyssal whip that’s worth 2M, you will have to pay a 100k fee to get it back from death’s office.

Ironmen would have to pay 50k to retrieve the same item.

Thus, while looting from your graveyard is very cheap, looting from Death’s Office can become very pricey when you start losing high-level gear.

OSRS Death Mechanics Visual Guide

If you’re in need of a visual guide, the Old School Team has uploaded a pretty in-depth guide on their YouTube channel which you can watch below.

What happens if you die in the wilderness?

The Wilderness death mechanics haven’t changed that much.

When killed by another player in the Wilderness, you will not receive a gravestone and you will not be able to retrieve your items from Death’s Office.

Just like it has always been, your items will be dropped on the floor for the PKer to loot.

What happens if you die in an instance?

Previously, dying within an instance would cause you to lose ALL items.

With the new death mechanics rework this has been changed and you will now be able to retrieve your items at the deaths office.

Meaning you no longer lose items in any instanced area.

This also applies to quest instances such as Recipe for Disaster, Vorkath, Galvek and others.

What happens if I die at General Graardor?

Dying at General Graardor, alongside other bosses, will cause you to have your gravestone spawned OUTSIDE of the boss room.

This means that you can now simply run back to the God Wars Dungeon and retrieve your items after dying WITHOUT having to acquire the correct amount of kill count.

What happens if I die at Barrows?

If you die at Barrows, you will have 15 minutes to get back to your gravestone and retrieve your items. After that, you will have to retrieve them from Death’s office for a higher fee.

How Long Do Items Stay On The Ground After You Die In Osrs?

Items will stay in your gravestone for 15 minutes once you die in osrs.

After the 15-minute timer has expired you will be able to retrieve your items from death’s office for a fee.

Why should we loot items if they go to Death’s Office anyway?

Retrieving your items from your gravestone is very cheap.

Doing the same thing from Death’s Office however, can get very expensive.

Death’s Office has a 5% fee for every item you lost that has a value of over 100k.

That’s everything you need to know about the current death mechanics in osrs.

These mechanics are very different from just a year ago when it was MUCH easier to lose your items in osrs.

These days, you really cannot lose your items unless you die to a player in the Wilderness.

Instead, you might have to pay a pretty penny to retrieve your items from Death’s Office.

Grim Reaper Office

Death seated inside his office

Death's office is an office owned by Harold Death Esquire , more commonly known as simply Death or the Grim Reaper. It can be accessed via a portal next to the Draynor Village lodestone. It is also accessed when players die for the first time, and during the Some Like It Cold quest.

The office is part of Death's mansion , and appears to be on an island suspended by chains in a void, and is decorated by murals depicting Harold becoming Death. Although it is part of his mansion, due to magic, the rest of the mansion cannot be seen, although a door can be seen leading to it. As its name would imply, Death himself can be found sitting at his desk inside the centre of the office. His pet hellhound Muncher can be found sitting in the corner behind him.

Players must come here in order to start the Soul Reaper activity, and to purchase rewards for it from Death's Store , although a Grim gem can be used to obtain new tasks once the activity has been started. Players also appear here when they die for the first time, in which case Death provides a short tutorial explaining death , respawn points, and gravestones . In the beta, after the first death, players will respawn at Death's office if they have wealth risked upon death. Players can access the River Noumenon through the door behind his desk, following completion of Nomad's Elegy .

The Boss collection log can also be found in here, behind Death's desk.

During Missing, Presumed Death , due to Death's kidnapping, Frank can instead be found in the office, and fulfils the same role as Death himself does.

During Dishonour among Thieves the player finds Nomad here in combat with Death. The player persuades Death to release Nomad and let him join the player. Death allows it because the player saved him during Missing, Presumed Death, but only on the condition Nomad will return here afterwards.
