Help! 2.5 TD Voyager possible bottom end problem

  • Add to quote

Uh Oh might have a messed up Piston ring, possibly just a rear main seal that needs replacing, but seems eng is being pressurized pushing oil out other places, skippy at idle, runs strong off idle still but appears to be burning oil now too, will check plugs after cool down. who knows maybe ill get lucky with just a vacuum leak ha ha. P.S. top end valve job etc...was done about 2 years ago, new PCV also. Anyone around Tampa / central FL wanna check it out? #DailyDriver Contact easier at My Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.ph...05:2305272732:69&set=a.116587105810203&type=3

Land vehicle Vehicle Car Minivan Van

better yank the plugs and check it out man

yep im betting its a bad ring, land or whatever, ill get an anti plug fouler thingy so at least it wont skip for now

one new plug is oil fouled, its the one closest to the timing belt (#1?).

voyager 2.5 td motor

It will not be a vacuum leak, vacuum on these cars is Central and would affect all 4 cylinders. With a vacuum leak on a 2.2L/2.5L engine you may not even experience any driveabilty issues other than a higher than normal idle unless vacuum to the Map sensor is affected then the car will run poorly and rich. As far as burning oil and fouling plugs... 1)Is the PCV system operating properly with no broken/collapsed/cracked/disconnected hoses? 2)Is there any oil in the hose from the turbo to the throttle body? 3)Is there oil in the airbox? 4)With the engine running and the oil cap removed is there smoke from blowby from the oil cap opening? I have two cylinders that have "Ash" fouling which is from burning oil but not enough to foul the plug with liquid oil and that is most likely an oil ring problem. If you have an issue with an oil ring or valve seal issue there is no way to determine that by normal diagnostics, an oil ring/valve seal issue will not show during a compression test or cylinder leak down test. All you can do is perform diagnostics to determine if there is another issue and if everything checks OK then it will be assumed that the issue is oil ring/valve seal related. Which picture illustrates your fouling plug issue??? http://www.austincc.edu/wkibbe/plugchart.pdf

Suggest a compression test at this point.

oil fouled plug photo is what i have, no sign of gas smell on plug. I heard theres possible issues with replacement valve seals...I had my valve job done almost 2 years ago, i assume it would have messed up well before now right? ...if thats likely then maybe the likely cause is oil ring. The engine has been hot eng knocking at idle for quite a while also. Now i just have to find a central FL TD guy who can do this without breaking the bank, you guys can do all this in the dark, a local shop will take me for a ride lol THX! P.S. PCV is new, i just replaced the 3 hole rubber thingy the PCV inserts into, i havent been all over the system as i have Multiple sclerosis (MS) so its hard for me to crawl all over eng bay & wrench for long

it does have blow by from open oil filler cap while running.

Sooooooo Sorry to hear about the MS. :frown2: Blowby is an indicator of excessive crankcase pressure and is usually an indicator of worn rings or a PCV issue. The only TD member I know in Florida is "charger R/T". (Tim). He is in Avon Park. Not sure if he does side work or can physically help you but he may know someone that can, he is an Extremely Nice guy. Send him a PM, explain your situation and give him a link to this thread.

couple van guys in florida on the FB van group. Best option is to have the motor pulled . remove the head and valve cover and inspect what you can. with blow by and smoke its most likely not going to be a valve stem seal or head problem. locally in jacksonville. i had a 2.5 rebuild for 580$. short block. Although i did the labor myself with a few beer friends. If it is just a single piston and you have more time than money. you could plop the motor on a stand and pull and replace 1 piston. might take a few weeks of piddling with it. but you would only be out a few gaskets and fluids.

masterjr3333 said: If it is just a single piston and you have more time than money.you could plop the motor on a stand and pull and replace 1 piston. Click to expand...

I think a normally fully healthy person could.. A person sufffering from MS may do better plopping the whole thing out. and working on it on a bench. or engine stand.

I had luck reducing blow by using seafoam in my engine oil for one oil change. About 1.5 years ago. Reduced my engine oil loss from 300mL/week to near zero.

interesting, but doesnt really apply to my van as the head etc...was done about 2 years ago. pistons looked good then too
