Just a quick question regarding the use of gift card payments.
My sister has booked her holiday online with Thomas Cook and I'd like to know if I buy her a TC gift card for Christmas, will she be able to redeem it instore against the holiday booked online?
Many thanks,
Do you mean Worldwide Travel Vouchers? If so, no she can't (unless things have changed recently). She would have to send them off to the address on the vouchers to be redeemed.
Hi LeylandS,
No, I mean an actual gift card bought in one of the high street TC shops. I popped in there last week to check that they do them and they do.
I suppose I should pop into town and go in and ask them, eh?
Thanks for your reply :)
I didn't think they did gift cards only gift vouchers (worldwide)? As you say, best to check in store, but often bookings done online aren't dealt with in store, for obvious reasons. They didn't get the business in the first place so why deal with those bookings?
Just a quick update in case anybody else is interested in this advice.
I went into Thomas Cook over the weekend and asked if a Thomas Cook gift card payment will be accepted in a high street branch against a holiday booked online and the answer is yes.
Thomas Cook gift cards are due in high street branches from the end of this month.
Hmmm. Another quick update for anyone who's interested; TC now saying their new gift cards won't be in until the end of December!
Somebody in their marketing team needs their knuckles rapped for not having them in place for Christmas!

What to do with Thomas Cook traveller’s cheques
I have had some Thomas Cook traveller’s cheques in sterling for many years that I kept for emergency use abroad. Are they of any value?
I also have some other American Express traveller’s cheques. Is there any advantage in keeping them or should I cash them in? Martin Bellman, London
Martin is not the only person who has contacted The Times since the collapse of Thomas Cook to ask if their traveller’s cheques are still worth the paper they are printed on. It seems that the demise of the world’s oldest tour operator jogged quite a few readers’ minds that stuffed in the back of the sock drawer they still have a clutch of these old travel essentials.
I must admit I was slightly surprised by this, naively believing that traveller’s cheques would have been consigned to history. Thomas Cook, a cabinet maker and former Baptist preacher, was a pioneer of the traveller cheque. His story begins in July 1841 when he chartered a train to take Temperance supporters 12 miles from Leicester to a meeting in Loughborough.
In 1855 Cook went international, organising trips to Europe and then North America, and in 1874 launched the “circular note”, the precursor of traveller’s cheques, which could be cashed overseas for local currency. In 1994 Thomas Cook acquired Interpayment Services Limited, a subsidiary of Barclays bank, to become the largest supplier of traveller’s cheques outside the US.
The demise of Thomas Cook travel agency on the high street and in the skies has not killed traveller’s cheques. Travelex, which bought Thomas Cook’s travel money business in 2000, will still accept the cheques, albeit for a 5 per cent fee. I would recommend cashing them in, along with any others you might have knocking about, and treat yourself to a night out.
The hundreds of thousands of customers with advance Thomas Cook bookings that were automatically cancelled on September 23, when the company went into liquidation, and that are Atol protected can begin claiming for full refunds from Monday.
The Civil Aviation Authority has an online form that will go live when the claims process begins. Follow instructions at thomascook.caa.co.uk , under the section headed Customers yet to travel out of the UK.
Beware scammers who are trying to defraud Thomas Cook customers. Go direct to the CAA website and do not engage with third parties that claim they will help with a refund. If you have trouble, call the CAA on 0300 303 2800. If you have a travel question you would like answered email [email protected]

'I have £2,300 in Thomas Cook vouchers - can I get a refund?' Your rights
The closure of 178-year-old travel operator Thomas Cook has marked the end of an era - but will you still be able to use gift cards that were purchased before its collapse? Here's what you need to know
- 12:57, 23 Sep 2019
- Updated 14:21, 23 Sep 2019
Thomas Cook has collapsed after a year long battle to sell its airline arm and rebuild itself as a hotels giant.
The company fell into liquidation in the early hours of Monday morning, after failing to secure the additional £200million funding it needed to stay afloat.
"Thomas Cook UK Plc and associated UK entities have entered Compulsory Liquidation and are now under the control of the Official Receiver," the Thomas Cook website now explains.
"The UK business has ceased trading with immediate effect and all future flights and holidays are cancelled."
Peter Fankhauser, chief executive of Thomas Cook, added: "We have worked exhaustively in the past few days to resolve the outstanding issues on an agreement to secure Thomas Cook’s future for its employees, customers and suppliers.
"Although a deal had been largely agreed, an additional facility requested in the last few days of negotiations presented a challenge that ultimately proved insurmountable.
"It is a matter of profound regret to me and the rest of the board that we were not successful. I would like to apologise to our millions of customers, and thousands of employees, suppliers and partners who have supported us for many years."
The company has now requested that its ordinary shares be suspended and that trading on the London Stock Exchange be ceased with immediate effect.
But what does this mean for those with gift cards that are yet to be spent?
Thomas Cook vouchers - will I get my money back?
Mirror reader Guy Cooper says he's been left devastated after discovering his £2,300 in Thomas Cook vouchers are now worthless.
The 59 year-old, who turns 60 on Tuesday, said he woke up to the news this morning, after already fearing the worst.
"I've been saving them up for five years," Guy told Mirror Money .
He amassed the vouchers through his employer, who offered them as part of a wider rewards scheme.
"I had planned to book a once in a lifetime holiday to New York or Vegas with my wife Elaine for next year," Guy said.
"It was supposed to be part of my retirement celebrations."
However, Guy now fears he's lost it all. If you're in a similar situation, it's important to know that gift cards are no longer valid.
However, you do have rights.
While it's extremely unlikely that you'll be able to claim the money back as a refund, there is a chance that whoever bought you the card, in this case Guy's employer, will be able to recoup the original cost from their credit-card issuer or bank.
If they paid in cash , it is unlikely that any money will come back.
If they paid by Paypal , they can open a case for a refund with the service online.
If they paid by credit card , they may be able to make a claim under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.
If this applies to you, contact your card provider and tell them that you want to make a section 75 claim.
The price of the goods or service must be greater than £100 - so there should be no issue with Thomas Cook claims.
If they paid by direct debit , they may be able to claim under the ‘chargeback scheme’.
This is similar to a section 75 claim but is a voluntary scheme that all the debit card providers have signed up to.
There is a time limit on chargeback claims - typically 120 days from the transaction processing date, or from when you expected to receive the goods/service if it’s being delivered.
On a separate note, if you booked your holiday with a gift card, your holiday will be Atol protected, meaning you will qualify for a refund.
For those with a Thomas Cook Cash Passport prepaid Lyk card, your money is safe.
These cards are issued by Wirecard Card Solutions Ltd and operated separately from Thomas Cook. Wirecard is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Thomas Cook vouchers aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on after the company collapses
- Alice Grahns , Digital Consumer Reporter
- Published : 12:37, 24 Sep 2019
- Updated : 13:33, 24 Sep 2019
THE collapse of Thomas Cook has left customers unable to spend their gift cards and vouchers with the tour operator.
Thomas Cook vouchers had been given out by some employers as part of benefits schemes, while others have been handed gift cards by their loved ones.
Thomas Cook went bust in the early hours of Monday after it failed to stump up £200million required by creditors.
The collapse sparked the UK's biggest repatriation effort since World War Two , with around 150,000 Brits stranded abroad.
But if you'd saved up vouchers to go on your dream holiday but never got round to spending them - or you spent them but didn't get to go on your trip before the firm went under - then you still have rights.
Martyn James - consumer expert at complaints tool Resolver told The Sun: "We don't know what will happen so you shouldn't put them in the bin.
"The Thomas Cook brand could be revived or sold to a competitor, so the cards could become usable again."
If you don't want to sit it out and wait, there are other options you can try and use to get your money back.
I've used my gift vouchers but never got to go on my trip
If you've already used your vouchers to pay for a package holiday but you've not been on your trip, you are ATOL-protected and will get the cash refunded.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will set up a service that manages all ATOL refunds by September 30 - customers can get updates on thomascook.caa.co.uk .
Generally, you'll need to complete a claim form and provide proof of the booking, of the ATOL- protection, and of vouchers you've handed to Thomas Cook.
I've got gift vouchers but haven't used them yet
If you've not yet used your gift cards, they have now become worthless as you can no longer redeem them.
But they still have some value, Mr James told The Sun.
In this scenario, customers have three options to try and get their money back, which we outline below.
Apply to be a creditor
You can apply to the Official Receiver, the body managing the closure of Thomas Cook, to be a creditor.
This means you're owed cash by the company for goods or services that you haven't received.
To register as a creditor, you need to complete a "Proof of Debt" form on Gov.uk , including details of how much you've lost out.
You'll then need to send it to administrator AlixPartners - there's also a downloadable form available on its website.
Just keep in mind that this process puts you at the end of a long queue of creditors, Mr James said.
This means you might only get back very little of the vouchers' worth and the process could take months or even years.
Make a Section 75 claim under the Consumer Credit Act
If you don't want to wait around for that, and Mr James advises you not to, another route is to make a Section 75 claim.
This applies to you or whoever gave you the gift cards or vouchers - as long as they paid for them by credit card.
Just keep in mind that the purchase must have cost between £100 and £30,000, and not all credit card providers will refund you.
To make a claim, contact your credit card provider - your first port of call should be its customer services team - and tell them you want to make a claim under Section 75.
It should then send you a claim form which you can fill in and your provider will use to process your application.
Claim back money under the "chargeback" scheme"
If you paid for the vouchers by debit card - or by credit card and the total comes to less than £100 - you may be able to claim under the "chargeback" scheme.
There is a time limit on chargeback claims though - typically 120 days from the transaction processing date, or from when you expected to receive the goods if it’s being delivered.
Also be aware that unlike Section 75, this is not a legal requirement.
To claim, contact your debit card provider for more information.
Can I still use my Thomas Cook prepaid travel card?
If you have a "Thomas Cook Cash Passport", which is a prepaid Lyk card, you'll be pleased to know that the cards are still valid.
This is because they are issued by Wirecard Card Solutions Ltd and operated separately from Thomas Cook.
But if Wirecard, which is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, went bust then you may lose out.

Airlines and travel firms have been accused of ripping off Thomas Cook customers as prices have tripled since the collapse.
Thomas Cook hotel staff also threatened to call the Spanish police if they don't pay their £1,100 bill, according to a Brit holidaymaker.
Meanwhile, bosses of the tour operator have pocketed £47million in pay and bonuses since 2007.

We have booked a holiday online through Thomas Cook, hoping to use their travel vouchers that we have. Although the vouchers are easy to buy online, they are not easy, and perhaps impossible to redeem. We paid for the holiday in full and posted the vouchers for a refund by (expensive) special delivery as required by Thomas Cook. They say they will refund within 28 days but we have been waiting way beyond that so far, and given the run around by phone (expensive 0845 number) and on their chat web site. We keep getting asked for more information and the same information over and over again, one piece at a time (e.g. where did we send the vouchers - we sent them to the address they gave and they signed for them as received). It seems we are getting a run around purely as a (perpetual ?) delaying tactic. We see many similar complaints on the chat site from people who are still waiting for refund after many months and being given the same sort of runaround or being ignored. In one chat, we found a comment from the Thomas Cook person to the effect that every time they are contacted the 28 days starts again. Meanwhile we have paid the credit card bill, which means we have paid Thomas Cook twice for this holiday. We have also incurred the expenses of special delivery and an 0845 phone number. The means of redeeming these vouchers including a 28 day wait would be ridiculous in itself, but the fact that it appears that we now have to contemplate legal action to recover our money is inexcusable.
Hello Steve M
Welcome to the Holiday Travel forum.
Sorry to hear of your experience. However, it would be better to post the above on one of the existing (open) threads for Thomas Cook. By adding your experience to an existing thread instead of starting a new one, you make it easier for Ta members and visitors to find and read about your experience with Thomas cook and you help us keep the forums tidier and cleaner, which benefits all.
In the future, you can do this by first making a search for 'thomas cook' on the Tripadvisor main page or any number of other forums just like this one. On this forum alone there are three pages of 'thomas cook' threads. Here is one that would have been quite appropriate for your issue.
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g1-i12334-k5850594-o20-Thomas_Cook_Flexible_Trips_think_twice_before_using-Holiday_Travel.html
Thanks in advance for your consideration and I'm sorry to hear of your experience.
I posted here as it is specifically about travel vouchers, which I thought was worthy of flagging up. When I searched, I could not find comment on this exact topic and the comment you suggest is about a different aspect of Thomas Cook service, although I agree that both reflect on customer experience with that company.
Hi Steve M,
Whilst you maybe right about finding a specific thread on Thomas Cook Travel Vouchers, the advice as mentioned by BradJill is to categorise topics of discussion using the various travel agencies as the title.
In a forum which displays the 20 most current threads, having a separate thread for each product for each travel agency, would effectively 'clutter' the forum to a point where it would become very user unfriendly. It would add thousands of pages to the site.. In your particular case, should you follow BradJills advice, a search using key words will bring up your post on a Thomas Cook thread, and at the same time, assist with the housekeeping of the forum immensely.
I'm on your side here. I want to know whether its worth following their advice for vouchers, but I don't trust them.
Trip Advisor don't give a damn, looking at their replies. They just want a neat and tidy forum. Well it isn't, and it never will be.
Welcome to the Holiday Travel forum on Tripadvisor.
Would you please explain your comments (post 4)
>>>>>>>>Trip Advisor don't give a damn, looking at their replies. <<<<<<<<
Very much look forward to your reply.
I suspect you don't actually understand what TA forums are all about.
I would respectfully suggest that before you post hasty, ill advised comments, and disrespect the forum in such terms, you take a few moments to find out a little more about the site, the specific forum boards and the ethos of more experienced posters offering helpful advice and support .
If you have any specific objections to TA, then I wonder why you even bothered to register and comment on something you clearly know very little about.
To the OP, I hope you find a way of resolving your issues with the company, and that you come back to us and let us know how you get on.
That was very well put! Welcome to the forum and by all means, stick around!
As some time has now passed, I just wondered how the OP got on with his grievance against Thomas Cook?
I'm sure it would be useful to other TA members if we could be told....

I am wondering if anyone has suffered the same issue as myself with Thomas Cook - We have been given a present of Thomas Cook Worldwide vouchers and wish to book a trip with them online.
According to Thomas Cook although it advises on the voucher you can use them online that is only if you pay the full amount up front then post your vouchers off for a refund within 28 days?????
What is the point of a gift voucher?? I went in to a Thomas Cook store who then advised me they cannot match the prices on their own website and would be £175 more to book with them as they use a different system and it is usually double the price in store!
I just find this ridiculous and seem to be finding it impossible to get in touch with someone who can deal with this from a customer relations side. Does anyone have any contact information I could use?
You can book your holiday on line then pay for it by credit/debit card. You then send your vouchers off special delivery to Thomas cook. They will then refund your card to the value of your vouchers. Address can be found on there website type in how to use Thomas cook worldwide vouchers.
I tried in the shop too but they said they couldn't take them in there???
Hope that helps
We unfortunately destroyed £1000 of TC travel Vouchers. The local branch say there is no refund proceedure.Do you have a contact address? These were given to The Rotary Club of Stokesley to use for Charitable fund raising.I cannot believe there is no refund proceedure.Any help?

DO NOT BUY THESE VOUCHERS
Same sort of problem. We have booked a holiday and had to pay in full and post vouchers for refund by (expensive) special delivery as required by Thomas Cook. We see many similar complaints on the chat site from people still waiting after many months. We found buried in one chat the comment from the Thomas Cook person that every time they are contacted the 28 days starts again. Meanwhile we have paid the credit card bill which means we have paid Thomas Cook twice for this holiday. The means of redeeming these vouchers including a 28 day wait would be ridiculous in itself, but the fact that it appears that we are now contemplating legal action to recover our money is inexcusable.
Can anyone give me a contact address for TC worldwide travel re vouchers
Unfortunately not. But the whole thing seems a massive con.
You should be able to quote your voucher numbers online, in multiple boxes. Ridiculous. No wonder they are going under.
I would need a bit of help here..I was given 200GBP worth of these vouchers as a gift when I still lived in the UK about 6years ago..I have relocated to SYD and there is no TC over here...these vouchers have been sitting in my drawer for the whole time...how can I reedem them or ask for an exchange for any other voucher?
I am experiencing this exact same thing. Missold, as the rules of use are not made clear, otherwise nobody would buy them, and misrepresentation of prices.
So frustrating. They have the cash already. No need to fulfill their part of the bargain by allowing me to spend them.
I can use them in store, as I discovered yesterday, after an hours travel each way, but only if I pay an over inflated price, which is almost double to their advertised price on line.
Blackmail, misrepresentation, missold. All I want is a room at the price they advertise.
Its up to the store
Won £1000 worth of vouchers as a prize on a Christmas draw. A couple of years later tried to use them for a long weekend in EuroDisney and was informed to pay in full for the holiday and cash in the vouchers afterwards. Was then told to go to a store for refund who took the vouchers off me to confirm whether they had been stolen. It took a couple of months of telephone calls that gave me the impression that they did not intend to refund my money until I threatened taking them to the small claims court which seemed to work.
