Las Anmas Ecolodge is a great remote location, like being on a desert island. Food was excellent, yurts were very comfortable, and the scenery was incredible. We kayaked, snorkeled with sea lions, hiked the beautiful surrounding area and generally had a good time.

They ( whale sharks ) are gentle creatures… a once-in-a-lifetime encounter will happen (or many more, in our case).

My daughter and I had a great trip last month with Baja Spirit. We saw almost too many gray whales to count in the first two days of the trip. And Las Animas was remote and beautiful, lots of good food and conversation. Best trip ever! Can’t wait to travel with Baja Spirit again to swim with the whale sharks!

Baja Vacations

If you love exotic locales filled with nature and wildlife, then you have found the right place. The Baja peninsula is one of the most diverse geographical areas of the world and stretches across millions of acres of protected biosphere reserves and sanctuaries. Every year over 97% of the planet’s gray whales, plus thousands of humpback and blue whales, migrate to Baja. John Steinbeck called it “ferocious with life” for its playful sea lions, leaping mobula rays and acrobatic dolphin pods.

Forests of giant cacti cover the coastal cliffs serving as crucial breeding grounds for thousands of seabirds and a thriving array of desert flora and fauna. On the east side is the Sea of Cortez. The “world’s aquarium,” nutrient-dense waters are calm and home to more than 900 fish species and one-third of the planet’s marine mammals. On the west is the Pacific coast, known for its peaceful lagoons like Bahía Magdalena where gray whales make their annual visit to give birth.

What Adventuresmith Travelers Say About Their Trips To Baja California

"Age is just a number” and so 70 new things to do before I reach 70 is my quest. I found the perfect answer with AdventureSmith Explorations. So close to nature. So far away from the rest of the world. This was a special trip with special people.

It was an excellent trip, with a well-maintained, comfortable, beautiful ship and a wonderful crew. An advantage of a small boat is that it can anchor quite close to shore, so kayak trips and skiff trips to the beach are shorter. Everything was wonderful!

Baja is a magical locale and the experience of traveling through the Sea of Cortez on this historical boat was incredibly special and very memorable.

We most enjoyed swimming with the Sea Lions, watching our kids play with them and the trip to watch the whales. And the snorkeling. And the hiking. And the burro ride. And and and.....

Great snorkeling, great food, wonderful beverages, great whale watching, great crew. Getting small groups into snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, or scenic boating was amazing!

We were absolutely delighted with this trip and would not hesitate to book another expedition in the future.

"Age is just a number” and so 70 new things to do before I reach 70 is my quest. I found the perfect answer with AdventureSmith Explorations. Plenty of relaxation, wonderful food immaculately presented, not to mention the exciting activities. I kayaked, snorkeled with whale sharks feeding on plankton, swam with playful sea lion pups, got close up to a baby grey whale, spotted birds plus five types of whale, hiked round cactus, ate marshmallows round a camp fire and only fell off the stand-up paddle board once. So close to nature. So far away from the rest of the world. This was a special trip with special people.

Accommodations Review

The trip of a lifetime on “Westward” ticked at least 20 first time experiences -the main one being living aboard the most beautifully restored 84 year old 87’ Historic Registered Vessel. It felt rather like being transported back to the 1930s as a guest on a friend’s yacht.

Crew & Guides Review

Bill, Tracie and Carlos’ love of Baja and all its wildlife is outstanding. From details of the largest creature on earth, the Blue Whale, to the life of the tiny Lion ant all imparted informally, no lectures. With such a small group and no fixed itinerary Captain Bill can allow for interests, preferences, photo opportunities and can make the best of the weather; you are at sea after all.

Featured in this Traveler Review

  • Westward Voyages in the Sea of Cortez

We did the Loreto to La Paz cruise aboard the Westward in December 2018 - January 2019, with a 2-day rock art trip before the cruise. It was an excellent trip, with a well-maintained, comfortable, beautiful ship and a wonderful crew. A local resident in Loreto recommended the ship. Everything was wonderful!

[I most enjoyed the] rock art: the great mural site is gorgeous, both the hike to it and the images. Swimming with whale sharks: we had an unusually good experience, the sharks are really impressive; snorkeling over schools of sardines and colorful fish; some gorgeous hikes. We did a number of hikes, three or four kayak trips, and three snorkel excursions (fish watching; swim with young sea lions; swim with whale sharks in the La Paz harbor). Hike lengths were up to about 2 miles, on good trails. An advantage of a small boat is that it can anchor quite close to shore, so kayak trips and skiff trips to the beach are shorter.

The boat has snorkel gear and shorty wet suits (with shoulders; if you buy your own, shoulders help keep you warm). You typically spend 2 to 4 hours off the ship during a day; the Westward has an excellent library of several hundred books (field guides, natural history, history, adventure, travel, fiction) covering Baja, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest (if you like to read, you'll find lots to choose from).

Staterooms on the Westward are comfortable; choice does not matter much (we spent little time in them except for sleeping or resting). The enclosed fantail is a great place to watch the scenery. The mid-ship parlor is also very comfortable.

Meals Review

Tracie does an excellent job accommodating dietary needs (we had one pescatarian; most dinners had fish appetizer or soup and main course), but needs details in advance.  Portions are moderate and satisfying (not huge). Excellent use of fresh produce and fish. We tend to eat much more simply; I enjoyed the fine cuisine, but my wife would have preferred a simpler cuisine.

Traveler Advice

There is no wi-fi availability for almost the entire trip, so be prepared to enjoy not being connected! We liked the north-to-south trip, as highlights of the trip (swim with sea lions and whale sharks) came at the end.

Captain Bill is warm, friendly, interesting, and does everything he can to ensure that passengers have a great experience. Chef Tracie is a talented cook, with many years of experience (some in outstanding restaurants), who prepares excellent food, including 3-course dinners, nicely presented, with wine pairings. Our naturalist guide Carlos was born and raised in La Paz, speaks excellent English, and knows the fauna and flora very well. He was exceptionally helpful to my wife, who is less mobile than were the other guests. He also prepared a video with highlights of still photos and videos, distributed to guests as we left. Carlos is exceptionally knowledgeable, good humored, helpful. The thumb drive he gave us has a really wonderful selection of photos and videos (he uses an underwater go-pro, so there are great videos of schools of fish, seal lions, whale sharks).

Our trip on the Westward was wonderful! Captain Bill and his crew were exemplary in all ways, and did their utmost to ensure complete passenger satisfaction on all levels. Baja is a magical locale and the experience of traveling through the Sea of Cortez on this historical boat was incredibly special and very memorable.

Though rooms are very small on the boat, which was to be expected, they are comfortable. The boat wasn't completely finished when we boarded it, so there were a few items missing in the staterooms (i.e. mirrors in the cabins, hooks to hang anything on, door jambs, etc.)

There was also a lot of finishing construction being done on one of the staterooms, so there was some dust and smells, and noises. We were all good sports about it, and amazed at the transformations that occurred during our trip.

Chef Tracie is a magician in the kitchen!  Her meals were incredible --tasty, creative, healthy and filling. It was always so much fun to see what she prepared. It was also fun to watch her work in the kitchen, whipping up cuisine with influences from all over the globe. She also made great use of the fresh fish, scallops and clams that our naturalist guide Carlos secured for her.  Mealtimes were delightful! Tracie also goes out of her way to make sure that passengers' dietary needs are adhered to, so no worries if you are gluten free, vegetarian, lactose intolerant, etc.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

The material provided ahead of time was ample and we particularly appreciated the suggested book list. We did not know, however, that the boat wasn't fully completed until we got on it. We would have appreciated knowing this information prior to our trip.

Our naturalist guide Carlos did a fabulous job introducing us to the flora and fauna of Baja. He is very knowledgeable and interesting, and has a great sense of humor. He patiently answered all of our questions, told us great stories and helped the group in so many ways. He is kind, warm and engaging, with years of experience (kayak guide, snorkeling/diving expert, wildlife specialist, safety/first aid, etc.). We truly enjoyed his company.

Captain Bill is a very experienced seaman who always puts safety first. We felt very secure with him at the helm. He is incredibly personable and a great storyteller, and adds so much to the experience. Bill does everything possible to make his passengers happy and fulfill their needs and wishes. He aims to please, like the rest of his crew, who treat their passengers as family.

The engineer and carpenter, Randy, was also an integral crew member, who added much to the overall experience. He is a very kind man and incredibly skillful at his work, who also possesses a great sense of humor with many stories to tell. We were in awe of the work he did on the ship, while we were onboard.

Follow the guidelines provided in regards to items and clothing to bring, as the list is very thorough. Although there is hiking, heavy hiking boots are not necessary. A pair of gym shoes is fine. Reading some of the books suggested is helpful to provide you with some knowledge of the area prior to your trip. Don't over pack, as you can wash your clothes in your sink and hang them dry up on deck.

Jeremy, Sara, Lindsey, JP, Megan. All very professional, safety conscious, informative, and FUN. It was special seeing familiar faces in the crew and enjoying new ones. Our whole family really enjoyed the experience.

As always everything was great. Thanks! We're ready for the next one.

Great snorkeling, great food, wonderful beverages, great whale watching, great crew.

I thought our cabin was in the perfect location. We had a gorgeous view and no one could walk past our window. We were also close to the lounge and dining room.

Snacks at 4 pm instead of 5 pm or 6 pm would have been nice.

Jeremy did a terrific job of organizing our activities. Getting small groups into snorkeling, or kayaking, or hiking, or scenic boating was amazing! We felt very safe snorkeling.

Your packing list was fine but the boat provided binoculars and water bottles so we didn't need to pack them. [Our Adventure Specialist] was very helpful in choosing a cabin.

  • Baja California's Whales & Sealife
  • Safari Endeavour

This trip was exactly as advertised – among the great whales, so close you could literally touch them. The ship and food were excellent with a superb, very attentive staff.

The room onboard was small but very comfortable.

We really enjoyed the local and organic produce, fresh pastries, and great wine list.

AdventureSmith did a great job, we felt very prepared heading into the trip. We were absolutely delighted with this trip and would not hesitate to book another expedition in the future.

We Do Baja Best Baja Motorcycle and UTV Tours Since 1997

What sets us apart, our philosophy.

Guiding riders since 1997, traveling with a light footprint on the Baja peninsula and safety have always been our top priorities.

We achieve this with smaller, well matched groups using Tim's "no dust speed" passing ranchos and homes with clean laundry hanging and kids waving from their schoolyards begging you to pop wheelies for them!

YES! There's plenty of space to shift up and roost Baja like you came to do, we'll definitely get your heart pounding.

On your journey, you might witness some of the local outreach Baja Bound is known for.

Tim Morton, our owner and guide, was inducted into the Off Road Motorsports Hall of Fame in October of 2021.

His love of Baja California, vast local knowledge, and flawless logistics  are what makes Baja Bound tour rides the premier riding vacation.

Each of Tim's rides is custom tailored for every skill level to enjoy.

Tim is well known for his Baja racing career as a factory rider for

Team Honda, BMW, and Kawasaki.

Although he holds 4 SCORE-International Pro Motorcycle Points Championships, among other titles, he's most proud of his 100% finishing rate with his arrive and race program building top quality race bikes and supporting racers from all over the globe.

Dakar Pros to desert racing Novices have all achieved their racing dreams under Tim's guidance.

The Perfect Match

We never mix Novices with Pros or Experts with Beginners!

If you're not sure where you fit in, just ask. We'll gladly steer you to the group that best fits your ability and adventure vacation goals.

Or, round up your riding buddies for your own private trip.

Don't worry about riding over your head to keep up or getting bored on easy roads all day when you came to roost.

Tim chooses routes based on the skill level of every group and each ride is different. You'll be conquering Baja with riders of similar ability on terrain you'll enjoy and at a pace to keep you challenged yet safe.

DRIVE BAJA RACECARS!

Picture this: You’re behind the wheel of a $100,000+ purpose-built off-road racecar driving at 70 mph over some of the most challenging yet exciting terrain in North America.  Suddenly, a small ridge is approaching fast and you feel a rush of adrenaline as you hit the throttle and lift off, soaring through the air like a professional Baja racer.  As you revel in the incredible gravity-defying moment, you peer over the front of the open-wheeled buggy to see the ground rapidly approaching. You’re committed now; there’s no time to ponder the landing. For those of us in the racing world, this view of Baja is a common experience, though it never gets old.

Wide Open has been leading tours of Baja from the seats of their Baja Challenge cars since 1997. And Wide Open Baja tours aren’t a run of the mill convoy type tour, nor are they for the faint of heart.  After a brief orientation course, tour guests get behind the wheel of their own Baja Challenge car and tour the Baja Peninsula at speeds with which they are comfortable.  Want to drive Baja at 70+ mph? Do it. Not comfortable at that kind of speed? That’s fine, too.  At Wide Open every tour is led by an experienced guide who knows the terrain, knows the vehicles and knows when to stop and let tour members catch up. Whether you have a few hours or a few days, Wide Open Baja has a tour to fit your needs with two destination options.

"Rocky, wild and unpredictable" — why Baja California is ideal offroading country

Unfurling for more than 750 miles down a stick-thin peninsula, Baja California has long been known for water adventures — but new off-roading tours help travellers see it from a different perspective.

Gripping the roof handle and staring silently over the dashboard, I avert my gaze from the 160ft drop to my left. There’s just six inches of dirt road standing between us and the cliff edge: one wrong move from our driver, and the pickup truck we’re in is going straight into the Sea of Cortez.

The first time I visited Mexico’s Baja California, the world’s second-longest peninsula, it was on a backpacking trip through Central America. I hitchhiked and bussed over 650 miles from Tijuana, on the border with the US, to Todos Santos, just short of Baja’s most southerly point, Cabo San Lucas. Travelling along the Carretera Transpeninsular, I stopped at every major town along Baja’s main highway, wine-tasting in Ensenada, whale-watching in Guerrero Negro and swimming with sea lions on Espiritu Santo Island.

During those long drives, I’d stare out at the stark desert landscape for hours: salt-encrusted greasewood shrubs and giant cardón cacti sprouted from swathes of sand and clay-red mountains, which often turned candyfloss pink at sunset. But what caught my eye were the narrow dirt tracks, hundreds of them crisscrossing the desert like a map drawn in the sand, veering off the highway towards sun-baked sierras and hidden turquoise coves. One day, I thought to myself, I’d return to Baja California to see where those roads led.

Five years on, I’ve come to La Paz, in the south of the Baja California peninsula, to join Baja Expeditions’ first-ever overlanding trip. The company has specialised in whale-watching, kayaking and wild camping in the state since the 1970s, but has recently branched out with off-roading tours to encourage visitors to explore the peninsula’s less-visited interior.

A mobula ray jumping out of the ocean into view of the camera.

“People think Baja is just beaches and whales,” says our driver Mike Thorneycroft, a Canadian who moved to Baja California in 2020. “But it’s more than that. These trips are about getting people out of the resorts and into Baja’s least-visited communities, and learning some of their history and culture.”

Mike gets us past the cliff edge safely, manoeuvring around asteroid-sized potholes and boulders with ease as we climb up and over Sierra de la Laguna, part of a mountain range that connects Baja California Sur, the southern state of Baja California, with southern California in the US.

On slightly wider roads, I start to relax and take in the views: unlike the parched desert I’d seen from the highway years ago, these mountains are lush from recent hurricane rains, flourishing with lime-green mesquite trees and pink and yellow wildflowers. We cross arroyos — dry riverbeds that fill up after heavy rainfall — flowing with crystalline water, where orange butterflies and free-roaming piglets from a nearby ranch are taking a drink. A vulture and a flaming red cardinal bird join soon after.

“Baja California is perfect for off-roading,” says Mike, who organises and competes in long-distance off-road rallies across the state. “The roads are rocky, wild and unpredictable, changing quickly in the rainy season. But that’s what makes it exciting.”

Near the former silver-mining town of   El Triunfo, we stop at the Santuario de los Cactus, a community-run garden with some   of the oldest and rarest cacti on earth, including the cardón, the world’s largest cactus. The garden’s grey-moustached volunteer caretaker, Guadalupe ‘Lupe’ Gonzalez, shows us around, pointing out which cacti fruits are edible and how to extract water from their flesh. He also shows us cacti species used to treat kidney stones, stomach aches and open wounds.

“I learnt about the medicinal properties of cacti from the rancheros (ranchers),” says Lupe, caressing the spines of a 400-year-old cactus as if they were whiskers. He’s been caring for the plants here for more than 30 years and offers guided tours of the garden for a small donation. “But this knowledge comes from the Indians. There are none left here now, but we know how to survive in the desert because of them.”

A lone cacti in the desert in Mexico.

Before the Spanish arrived, Baja California was inhabited by three major Indigenous groups: the Cochimí, the Guaycura and the Pericú. Ancient rock paintings in Sierra de San Francisco, around 465 miles north of where I am and described by UNESCO as some of the most impressive collections of rock paintings in the world, suggest that these tribes had lived on the peninsula for at least 10,000 years.

Although the Spanish colonised Baja California much later than Mexico’s mainland, around the late 17th century, the culture and history of these local Indigenous groups was erased more quickly than in the rest of Mexico. Some experts believe this is because the region’s Indigenous groups were nomadic hunter-gatherers, who lacked the big cities and societal structures that helped preserve the legacies of the Mayans and Aztecs in other Mexican states. Today, very few Indigenous groups remain, with most living in the north of Baja California.

After a few hours of driving along the spectacular Barriles Santa Teresa coastal road, we make the steep descent to Palo Blanquito beach, where we’ll be spending the night. It’s a wild strip of sand, where milky-red cliffs crumble into a dazzling turquoise sea studded with volcanic rock. Come sunset, it’s just our truck on the beach and a flock of pelicans floating on the dead-still water, like rubber ducks in a jade-coloured bath. We eat refried beans and chicken burritos under the stars, watching a brilliant-white crescent moon rise over the water. That night, I sleep to the sound of the waves lapping gently at the shoreline.

The next morning, I watch the beach come to life from my tent. As the sun rises above the horizon, the sea turns from liquid silver to light pink, illuminating the inside of the tent with a warm glow. A family of pelicans — each one resembling a light aircraft — skim across the water with mouths agape, hoping to catch one of the flying fish backflipping through the air. Eager to join the action, I roll out of the tent and into the sea, plunging head first into the crystal-clear water with my mask and snorkel. Below the surface is an underwater city made of coral and volcanic rock, and colourful fish: I see a long, translucent cornetfish; a tiny cortez rainbow wrasse; and an enormous shoal of California yellowtail, the soft morning light bouncing off their tinfoil-like skin. It’s tempting to stay longer on this wild, empty beach, lounging on the rocks and floating in the warm turquoise waters as the resident pelicans do. But Mike has packed up camp and started the engine — it’s time to continue our journey through the desert roads of Baja California. “That’s the thing with overlanding,” says Mike, opening the passenger door for me to get in. “There’s always one more road to explore.”

Day 8: Los Islotes, El Bajito.

In the morning you will sail to Isola Espiritu Santo to begin the first of the three diving activities expected in these waters.

Situated half a mile north of Isla Espiritu Santo are Los Islotes, two large rock islets, one of which is a natural arch. Diving through the centre of this natural rock formation, brimming with life, one can expect to see dense shoals of silver sardines, blue and gold King Angel Fish and yellow Surgeon fish amongst golden cup corals. These islets are home to a colony of over 200 Californian Brown Sea lions. These inquisitive creatures, take great interest in those visiting their home. One can often turn to find the pups pulling at your fins, eager to play, showing off and turning circles around our comparatively clumsy underwater movements. The larger bulls become pugnacious and territorial during the mating season, in protection of their harem. Underwater circumnavigation of these islands is invariably exciting and always visually diverse.

Depth: 15-100ft.

Temperature: 75-86

Visibility: 60-100ft.

Level: Novice

After diving, landing on a white sandy beach, for lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon you will return to La Paz.

Day 9: El Bajo.

Second day of diving.

The seamount is located 8.2 miles, 032° degrees from Los Islotes. There are three distinct underwater peaks, arrayed along a three hundred yard line running 120° – 300°, the northern most rising to within 83ft of the surface, the central peak to within 52ft and the southern to within 69ft. The central peak, with its shallow depths and relatively flattop, is the primary dive site and anchoring location. This is one of the premier dive sites in the world for schooling Hammerhead sharks. Schools range from between six to hundreds, traveling in a clockwise direction around the seamount for unknown reasons. While schooling, hammerheads are not aggressive and, reassuringly enough, they actually appear disinterested in divers. As a seamount, El Bajo is home to an abundance of sea life, mass schooling fish (amber jacks, tuna etc), octopus and the impressive Panamic Green moray; a colony of over fifty can be found in a small canyon. Aside from possible encounters with hammerheads,  frequent visitors to the seamount include whale sharks and giant pacific manta rays.

Depth: 60-100ft.

Level: Advanced Open Water Dive.

Day 10: La Reina, La Reinita.

Third day of diving.

A rock islet just north of Isla Cerralvo, with a lighthouse. This site is among the most beautiful in the area. In depths of 80ft (25m) a large reef is found populated by gorgonias of all types, brain corals, large schools of brightly coloured tropical fish, rays, green, zebra & jewelled morays. This is a “must dive” site! This dive is subject to current, but is home to over 8 giant pacific manta rays.

Depth: 80ft.

Level: Novice to Intermediate

Day 11: La Paz – Los Cabos. 135 miles.

The old road to south will take you to the Sea of Cortez, passing by the ancient towns of El Triunfo and San Antonio, still immersed in their historical past, when precious minerals were extracted from the bowels of the mountains. After a short driving on a dirt road, you will arrive to Cabo Pulmo, marine national park, home of an important coral reef . You can contract an exit at the local diving shop or reserve it for the next day.

Temperature: 65°-75°

Visibility: 80ft.

Continuing off-road, driving across the Tropic of Cancer, the incredible trail that parallels the Gulf, will allow you to discover a majestic succession of isolated beaches, before it takes you to the picturesque San Jose del Cabo, access point to the tourist corridor of Cabo San Lucas.

Overnight at the hotel.

Day 12: Los Cabos.

After breakfast, you will have plenty of time for a beautiful glass bottom boat excursion to the famous granite Archway and perhaps to do some shopping. Or you can contact one of the many Diving Shops for a wonderful immersion to the underwater sand falls or go back to Cabo Pulmo, for further immersion.

Day 13: Los Cabos - La Paz. 89 miles.

You will travel north, along the Pacific coast, to visit the mysterious and romantic oasis of Todos Santos, on your way to spend one more night in La Paz.

Day 14: Departure from La Paz.

You will drop the vehicle at the international airport and do the check in for your flight.

Time for another surprising whale watching in the lagoon and also to observe the endemic fauna of the large mangrove swamps. Full board and tent lodging.

Day 9: Laguna San Ignacio – Bahìa Magdalena. 256 miles.

You will follow the path of the Baja 1000, the legendary off road race that blast through the peninsula every year, from north to south and between the treacherous mirages of the immense Tide Flats, you will cross the Laguna on your way to the splendid bay of San Juanico, the green orchards of La Purisima, the farming fields of Ciudad Constituciòn, up to Puerto San Carlos, your fourth whale watching base, on the edge of the immense sand dunes of Bahìa Magdalena.

Day 10: Bahìa Magdalena – La Paz. 170 miles.

Although the Gray Whale rapresents the main attraction in these waters, you will also sail to observe the huge population of this practically virgin ecosystem, like Dolphins, Sea Lions, Frigatebirds, Cormorants, Brown Pelicans, Heermann’s Gulls, Ospreys and Herons. You will go ashore the barrier island, to explore the immense extension of moving dunes and, in the afternoon, you will drive to La Paz, the charming capital of Baja California Sur.

Day 11: La Paz - Los Cabos. 161 miles.

Day 12: Los Cabos – La Paz. 89 miles.

You will enjoy a beautiful glass bottom boat excursion to the famous granite Archway and perhaps some shopping, before to travel north, along the Pacific coast, to visit the misterious, romantic oasis of Todos Santos, on your way to spend one more night in La Paz.

Day 13: Departure from La Paz.

Jones Adventure

Hosted by Keith Jones, one of the leading pioneers of whale watching in Laguna Ojo de Liebre, Baja Sur Mexico!

2023 baja gray whale watching season updates.

We are well prepared for our 2023 gray whale season. It is going to be one of the best ever. Since we are just coming out of the global pandemic we are still taking necessary precautions as we get back to our activities and experience the joy of gray whale watching safely. At Baja Jones Adventures our staff is fully vaccinated to safely provide our services.

Baja Jones Adventures helps you get closer to gray whales with amazing accommodations in our upscale camp on the shore of Laguna Ojo de Liebre. It may surprise you to know that our shoreside accommodations are located on the shore for better access to gray whale watching in Baja. Our campsite makes it easy to have a close encounter with the gray whales during the southerly migration with almost ten times as many whales compared to other winter nursery grounds lagoons.

From our trip package options to the camp accommodations, we make it a point to bring the comfort of a home far away from home. We offer our guests the facilities to have a great time. Apart from heated wood-sided cabin tents optionally equipped with toilets, we added optional ensuite hot water showers to make our guests comfortable as possible in our remote location. Not only will guests enjoy witnessing the whale jumping from our shoreside campsite, but they may have the opportunity to hear the whales breathing at night. All they need to do is to open a sliding window on the cabin tent facing the bay. We also have a terrific chef, regarded as one of the best in the area of Central Baja waiting to serve you delicious meals.

Tour Review: Lindblad Expeditions' Baja California: Among the Great Whales

I t’s a funny thing to know ahead of time that a trip will be a life-changing experience. But one look at the Lindblad Expeditions itinerary Baja California: Among the Great Whales made it clear this was one of those rare times. But as I packed for my trip , I wondered if I had built it up too much in my mind, and that the actual experience might not be able to meet these high expectations.

I needn’t have worried. This excellent expedition cruise helped me reconnect with awe, nature, and gave me space to push my personal boundaries in a safe manner. The ship, the National Geographic Venture, was comfortable, well-appointed, and quickly came to feel like home (always a nice trait on a cruise of more than a few days).

DEEP DIVE: What to know about Lindblad before you book

The primary focus of this seasonal sailing is on whales—it takes place during the time gray and humpback whales are in Baja birthing and nursing their young before taking them north along their migratory route. But whales are just a small part of the incredible spectrum of wildlife you’re likely to see on this tour.

On my early February sailing, in addition to humpback and gray whales, we also saw sea lions, sea turtles, so many fish, dozens of dolphins, and enough birdlife that the birders onboard were nearly always aflutter. There’s also a lot to learn about the Baja California Sur ecosystem.

The safety part felt well-tended, which gave me lots of room to push my personal boundaries. I snorkeled above a swirling school of thousands of shining fish, swam with adolescent sea lions, paddle boarded in uninhabited bays, and (with some help from motion sickness meds), bounced across the waves in a panga (a small local boat) to catch glimpses of gray whales spy hopping.

This cruise felt like a beacon for people who travel with care, curiosity, and a sense of environmental responsibility.

Things to Know About Baja California: Among the Great Whales

  • The staff is large and impressive, and includes a mix of hospitality pros, scientists, and guides, all of whom are professional, personable, and seem to really like their jobs.
  • The photos of the National Geographic Venture on the Lindblad site aren’t bad, but they don’t do it justice. Rooms on the ship are comfortable, feel upscale, and are tended to daily by hospitality staff that keeps everything in tip-top shape. I was way more impressed in person than I thought I would be based on the photos.
  • There’s snorkeling and whale watching, but there’s no snorkeling with whales. Whale watching happens from both the ship’s deck and from small local boats called pangas.
  • The onboard food is great. More on that below, but I was uniformly delighted by the meals.
  • I mentioned it above, but Lindblad’s culture of safety is next level. Whether it was going from the ship to a zodiac, stepping into the water during a beach landing, or snorkeling with sea lions, I always saw and felt the ways in which staff were actively keeping guests safe.
  • Short-sleeve wetsuits, fins, and snorkel sets are provided to each guest along with life jackets.

Tour Highlights

  • Snorkeling in Cabo Pulmo National Park
  • Sunrise snorkeling with sea lions at Los Islotes
  • All the whale watching
  • Photography and naturalist walks on uninhabited islands
  • Learning sessions onboard the ship

Important Details About Baja California: Among the Great Whales

This eight-day expedition cruise trades off going eastbound and westbound around the tip of Baja California Sur. It includes time in Magdalena Bay on the Pacific side of the peninsula (a good jumping-off point to see gray whale mother and baby pairs), and an extended period on the Sea of Cortez.

PICTURE PERFECT: Whale photography tips from a pro

Every day, there’s at least one—and often two—big activities. Snorkeling, whale and wildlife watching trips aboard smaller boats (pangas and zodiacs), a city day in La Paz, and excursions to uninhabited islands and beaches are all on the itinerary. Note that the itinerary can shift depending on weather conditions (on my sailing, high winds meant some of our activities changed on the final day).

Each day felt interesting and varied, and naturalist talks and walks offered chances to learn a ton along the way.

Route Notes

On eastbound sailings, you fly into Loreto (on the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula) and then take the two-and-a-half hour bus ride to San Carlos the Pacific side. On westbound sailings, you fly into Loreto and take a quick shuttle ride to the port to board the boat.

This is a pretty active cruise (though there’s always the option to hang out back at the ship). Activities include snorkeling, and on some of the snorkeling excursions, guests need to be able to use a small ladder to get in and out of the zodiac or panga (a small local boat style). There’s paddle boarding and kayaking, hiking and walking, and a city day in La Paz that includes a cultural performance and dinner. There’s also a lot of whale watching, both from the ship and aboard pangas.

Onboard, there are daily naturalist, photographer, and scientist talks, as well as a nightly meeting where guests and staff gather to recap the day and look ahead to the next day’s activities.

Accessibility

On my sailing, there were guests across the mobility spectrum. A number of the activities required getting into and out of zodiacs, doing water landings at beaches, transferring between boats (from a zodiac to a panga and back again), and some snorkeling excursions used ladders to get back up into small boats. But since it’s a cruise, guests could easily opt to stay on the ship, where there were lovely views, good food, an onboard library, and sun decks. The ship has an elevator, and when it was out of service, crew helped passengers with mobility issues move between the decks.

In my opinion, this sailing is a good fit for families with kids who are relatively responsible and good swimmers. On sailings during school vacations and on those where there’s enough families onboard, Lindblad has a certified field educator onboard who leads kid activities throughout the trip as part of the company’s National Geographic Global Explorers program. The ship has rooms that comfortably fit three, and also has a few adjoining rooms for two that can be configured as a suite for a family of four.

FAMILY ADVENTURES: Our top picks for family-friendly tour companies

The onboard food is great. Breakfast is served as a buffet and lunch and dinner are both a la carte multi-course meals. The vibe in the dining room is casual (no one dresses up) and friendly, and you can sit wherever you like.

Big windows offer great views of the scenery, and the dining room staff are all kind and friendly. Freshly baked bread is served with each meal, and there’s a nice variety of appetizers and main courses daily. The serving sizes are modest in an attempt to reduce food waste, but it’s always ok to ask for another portion or another item.

There’s also a staffed bar in the lounge for drinks (included in the price of the cruise), plus a snacks, coffee, tea, and water area that’s refreshed regularly (and is the place to find the delicious little bags of freshly baked cookies the kitchen puts out). The espresso machine is self-serve, and makes great drinks (including decaf versions of coffee drinks). On most evenings there’s also a cocktail hour with signature drinks and appetizers in the lounge.

The National Geographic Venture has a fitness room, and the wellness coordinator offers daily early morning stretch classes on one of the decks. There are also spa services available for a fee. One of the coolest things offered onboard is the Gear Locker , a treasure trove of cameras, lenses, and other photography equipment available for guests to borrow.

Also available in the lounge: binoculars, sea sickness medication, and ginger candies. The ship is also staffed with a doctor (on my sailing, the doc helped me one night when the waves got bigger and seasickness kicked in). And daily, there’s a paper digest version available of the New York Times (it’s in a cubby near the gift shop).

In each stateroom, bathrooms come equipped with shampoo, conditioner, and body soap; plus a little baggie with SPF lip balm, a bar of exfoliating body soap, a great little loofah thing, and some foot cream.

Best for/Worst for

This tour is absolutely magical for relatively active people who love seeing wildlife and have an interest in conservation. I wouldn’t say you need a high level of fitness, but being able to get on and off a small boat (with help from the very safety conscious crew) is a regular occurrence, and so you’d want to be fairly confident with your ability to do that.

This tour would be tricky for people with significant mobility issues as well as for families with very young children.

A note about seasickness: I am prone to seasickness, but used the scopolamine patch on my sailing and had good results (my only issues came when the patch came off in the shower without me noticing it and after I removed the final patch and had some rebound nausea for about 36 hours). Most people on my sailing didn’t seem particularly effected by the rocking, especially on the more sheltered Sea of Cortez side. Sailing up the Pacific side of Baja California Sur was a bit rough, but once we moved into the protected bays where we spent the rest of the trip, it was fine again.

Johnny Campbell to Lead Honda True Adventure Tour

American Honda announced today that 11-time Baja 1000 winner Johnny Campbell will lead a hybrid influencer/demo-ride event—the Honda True Adventure Tour—next month.

Honda True Adventure Tour

This is a press release from Honda…

Based around an adventure motorcycle ride from Northern Washington to Southern California, the event will feature social-media influencers riding Transalp and Africa Twin adventure bikes, with the group making periodic stops at Honda powersports dealerships for public demo rides. Making guest appearances at different points along the ride will be factory Monster Energy Honda riders Ricky Brabec (a two-time Dakar Rally winner) and Skyler Howes.

Honda True Adventure Tour

A total of approximately 1,500 miles in length, the Honda True Adventure Tour will start May 5 in Lakewood, Washington, with Campbell leading a group of four influencers to overnight stops in the Oregon municipalities of Sisters, Eugene and Coos Bay, before they finish up in Eureka, California. There, a second team of influencers will take the baton for an all-California stint, to include overnight stops in Roseville, Paso Robles and Huntington Beach, before the ride makes a ceremonial finish at the American Honda Collection Hall in Torrance on May 14.

Honda True Adventure Tour

Along the route, the group will stop at a trio of Honda powersports dealerships—Lakewood, Washington’s South Bound Motorsports on May 4; Roseville, California’s Roseville Honda Motorsports on May 11; and Huntington Beach, California’s Huntington Beach Honda on May 14. The public is invited to these stops, where they can meet Campbell and join Honda’s demo team in local rides aboard new Honda powersports models, including Transalps and Africa Twins.

Honda True Adventure Tour

“ADV enthusiasts know that springtime means riding time, so we can’t wait to get started on this adventure extravaganza,” said Jeremy McGuire, Senior Manager of Customer Engagement at American Honda. “With both influencer and demo-ride components, the Honda True Adventure Tour will give participants the opportunity to try out Honda’s adventure models firsthand, and the fact that it’s all being led by off-road legend Johnny Campbell makes it a can’t-miss. We look forward to seeing some great content from the participating influencers, and to spending quality time with our customers at the demo-ride events.”
