Questions & answers (0), is 3 days/2 nights the longest itinerary in halong bay.

No. There are 3 or 4-night itineraries on Halong bay cruises as well. However, 2-night is one of the 2 most common itineraries.

If I booked 1 night, can I extend one more night on Halong Bay cruises?

Yes. You can surely extend one more night. However, the different program between the 1-night and 2-night itinerary is Day 2. You should ask for an extension in advance of your travel date. In case you are on the cruise already, the duration extension is subject to availability and you may experience the repeated itinerary.

If my parents will not join many activities, is 3 days/2 nights suitable for them?

Yes. 3 days/2 nights is suitable for all travelers. The itinerary is not only for more activities but also more relaxation and a less rushed itinerary. Your parents can absolutely enjoy the time onboard and view Halong Bay.

How many meals are included in a 3 day 2 night itinerary?

The 3 day 2 night itinerary will include lunch-dinner on Day 1, breakfast-lunch-dinner on Day 2, and breakfast-lunch on Day 3.

Are lunches and dinners on the 1st and 2nd night the same?

No. For all 3 day 2 night passengers, the lunch and dinner on the 2nd night will be changed. Kindly note that the lunch on Day 2 is usually served on the day boat.

Do we change the cruise on Day 2?

Usually, a small boat will pick you up on Day 2 for excursions until the afternoon. You will come back to your main boat at around 3:00 - 4:00 pm depending on each itinerary.

Can we skip the morning activities and just join the afternoon ones on Day 2?

No. On Day 2, the day boat will pick you up for excursions and you will not have access to your cruise until afternoon. If you do not move to the day boat in the morning, you will stay on the cruise while it comes back to the cruise pier, drops off the current passengers, and picks up new ones.

Is there the same cooking class and sunset party on the 2nd night?

Yes. Onboard activities are repeated no matter the short or long itineraries. You can join once again or choose to join on the first or second night. Besides, since Day 2 is usually more active than other days, you are suggested to join these activities on the first and simply rest and relax on the second night.

Which cruises include a biking trip to Viet Hai Village? Do we stay for one night on Cat Ba island in a 3 day 2 night itinerary?

Many cruises offer a biking trip to Viet Hai Village such as Heritage, Orchid, Genesis, Elite of the Seas, Scarlet Pearl, etc. There are currently no cruises offering 1 night on Cat Ba Island. You just visit Cat Ba Island in the daytime and overnight onboard.

Which is best for 3 days and 2 nights, Halong, Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long Bay?

All three bays offer a variety of activities on a 3 day 2 night itinerary. Depending on your preference, if you want to see the renowned World’s Heritage Site with more bustling attractions, choose Halong bay. If you prefer more quietness and secluded attractions, Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay would be ideal.

3 Day Cruise Itinerary

Though more costly than an overnight trip, 3 day 2 night itinerary is widely favored by visitors who can afford both time and budget. Similar to 2 day 1 night itineraries, a 3 day 2 night itinerary also starts at noon on the first day and ends at that time on the third day. As a result, travelers will have a total of almost 48 hours on the boat.

Why is a 3 day 2 night itinerary recommended?

Access to more secluded part of the Bay

The shorter duration offers access to classic stopping points  of Halong bay so you will run into more tourists along the way. On the other hand, a 2-night itinerary brings you to visit the much further areas and enjoy the unbeatable tranquility on the second day. Moreover, since there are not many guests choosing 2 nights, the second day would be the highlight of the whole trip thanks to the maximum privacy and less-crowded attractions.

  • Leisurely schedule

Although the 1-night trip offers both recreation and relaxation activities, visitors still find it a bit busy due to the continuous transfer from/to Hanoi in 2 days and a bunch of onboard activities to try. Choosing a 2-night itinerary will provide you with more resting time among activities. Better still, you can take advantage of the repeated onboard activities on the first or second night to choose the most suitable time to join without missing any.

What activities are included in 3 day 2 night itinerary?

Normally, Day 1 and 3 in the 2-night itinerary are the same as Day 1 and 2 in the 1-night itinerary. The difference is on Day 2 when visitors are transferred to a smaller boat to easily access further parts of the bay. Guests join the day boat for excursions and come back to the big boat in the late afternoon.

After check-in onboard, travelers check in the cabin and rest a bit before lunch is served in the dining area. The ship starts cruising to Halong Bay, crosses some signature islands and islets of the bay, and arrives at the first stop at the time you finish your lunch. Travelers have around 1 - 1.5 hours at the first point. Some cruises include 2 outdoor activities in the afternoon while some have only one and provide more time for relaxation.

After excursions, guests are invited to take advantage of onboard facilities such as a spacious sundeck for sunset watching, a swimming pool for relaxing, a mini golf course or club for entertaining, and so on.

A cooking class, sunset party, or Happy Hour are unmissable activities before dinner. In the evening, no shortage of recreational and relaxation programs are available such as squid fishing, massage service, games, etc. End of Day 1.

Starting with Taichi on the sundeck, Day 2 is full of outdoor activities. After savoring breakfast, a Day boat picks you up for excursions. It could be a full day of kayaking and swimming or leisurely lay down on a pristine beach. Those who book a Lan Ha Bay cruise may join a cycling trip on Cat Ba Island as well.

A Vietnamese-styled lunch will be served on the day boat. You continue the afternoon activities or can opt to stay on the boat to rest, sightsee and enjoy the serenity of the secluded area.

The day trip will finish at around 15:00-16:00 and you will come back to your main vessel, relax in the cabin or join the trip with new passengers.

The last day to enjoy Halong bay also starts with a Taichi session on the top deck. Light breakfast is served while the ship cruises to the last attraction in the itinerary. You also spend 1 hour discovering the bay and then come back to freshen up and pack your luggage for check out. You will enjoy an early lunch in the dining area before disembarking at around 11:00.

Halong Bay Cruise 3-Days 2-Nights: How to Pick the Best One! Reviews & Top Tips!

Posted on Last updated: October 30, 2023

Looking for the best 3-day 2-night cruises in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam? You’ve come to the right place!

In this article I have outlined everything you need to know to choose the perfect Halong Bay cruise for you. Including a detailed 3-day itinerary, tour reviews, different types of boat to choose from, and more.

Halong Bay is one of the most famous spots in Vietnam, and it’s easy to see why. With its unique landscape, floating villages and stunning natural beauty, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime destination.

Cruises in Ha Long Bay can be pretty expensive, especially 2-night ones, so it’s only natural to wonder whether they’re worth it and how to pick the best one.

We did our 2-night cruise in Halong Bay with Aspira Cruises. It was expensive and touristy, but still a great experience. However, there are some things I wish I’d known before booking our Halong Bay cruise.

So what are you waiting for? Dive in, learn from my mistakes, and start planning your perfect overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam!

What is Ha Long Bay?

Halong Bay is a beautiful bucket list destination in northern Vietnam.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994, the emerald waters of this large bay are dotted with thousands of limestone rock formations, hidden caves, dreamy beaches and small islands.

It’s a must-see stop on every Vietnam itinerary, and it’s easy to see why. Despite the popularity among travellers, which can make the bay rather busy, Halong’s magic remains.

Due to the popularity of Ha Long Bay, many cruises have started exploring also the neighbouring bays, namely Bai Tu Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay.

When choosing your 3-day 2-night cruise in Halong Bay, make sure to check the itinerary, as it will likely also include stops at the lesser known bays around it.

How to get to Halong Bay

The easiest way to reach Ha Long Bay is by car, bus or shuttle bus transfer from Hanoi. It takes around 2 hours to drive from Hanoi.

You can opt to travel independently from Hanoi to Halong Bay via the public bus or private car, and then simply board your cruise when you arrive.

However, most tours will often include a transfer to and from Hanoi Old Quarter as part of the price. If it’s not already included, they can often add it for a small price.

If the difference isn’t much, I personally prefer to travel with the transfer organised by the cruise, since if there are any delays due to traffic, the cruise will have to wait for you. If you make your way independently and are delayed, you’re not guaranteed that the cruise won’t have set off without you.

How to choose the right Halong Bay 3-day cruise

Probably the biggest deciding factor is going to be your budget. On the most basic level, if you want your Halong Bay cruise to be three days and two nights of luxury, then you can expect to spend more.

But it’s not  all  about money. Essentially, it’s a choice between a few different elements:

Type of boat: The question here is basically the difference between a traditional boat versus a modern yacht with nice cabins. It may sound simple, but it’s true: the nicer the boat, the more you pay!

Itinerary: The itineraries are all fairly similar, but there can be small differences and variations that can mean you go for one cruise over another. Check itineraries carefully and decide based on what you’d like to do most.

Target audience: Do you want to cruise on a party boat? Or would you like a more tranquil Halong Bay cruise for couples?

The bottom line here is don’t book a party cruise if you want to chill, and definitely don’t opt for something mature and quiet if you want to have a wild time!

Best Halong Bay 2-nights 3-days cruises

Here are some of the best 2-night 3-day cruises in Ha Long Bay that you will find online.

5-star Aspira Cruise: Luxury 3 Day-2 Night Halong-Lan Ha Bay

We did our Halong Bay tour with Aspira Cruise, and I was pretty happy with our experience. Step aboard this beautiful luxury boat , and head off on an adventure to remember.

One of the best cruises in Halong Bay , the Aspira Cruise boat boasts spacious rooms with balconies, and even fancy bathrooms with a bath tub and view over the bay.

On top of that, you also get to enjoy all of the tasty food served in the onboard restaurant, top quality great service and a top deck with a pool & lots of outdoor seating.

If you’re looking for a cheaper option, while still having a luxury experience, Phoenix Cruise is a great alternative.

The decor of the rooms is a bit more dated, and they don’t have private balconies or bath tubs, but they’re still spacious and the service onboard is that of a 4-star hotel.

The itinerary is very thorough, including many of the same stops as Aspira Cruise, and the price includes all meals and activities. It’s a more affordable luxury cruise.

Halong Bay: 3-Day 2-Night 4-Star Cruise with Transfer

Rosa Boutique Cruise might be a 4-star ship, but the decor of the ship and service definitely resemble that of a 5-star cruise. This option also includes the transfer from Hanoi in the price.

Not only do you get a polished private room all to yourself, but the cruise also comes with meals included in the packages. You won’t get bored either, as activities include cooking classes, kayaking and even a happy hour.

Halong Bay 3-Days 2-Nights Cruise Itinerary

So what do you actually do for three days in Ha Long Bay? This is the exact itinerary we did during our Aspira Cruise . I included exact timings so you know how the days are structured.

Read on to learn all about the best three day two night cruise in Halong Bay , with plenty of information about what’s included on a cruise, as well as the various activities you can expect to do on your trip.

Ha Long Bay Cruise Day 1

9:00: Get picked up in Hanoi – Halong Bay cruises from Hanoi begin early in the morning and start with you being picked up from your accommodation.

You’ll make the two and a half hour journey (usually in an airconditioned minivan) by road up to Halong Bay. Once you arrive at the dock, it can take a while to check in and actually get on to the boat.

12:30: Lunch onboard – By midday, you should be out on the water and off on the adventure around Halong Bay.

A delicious buffet lunch and welcome drink will be served up on board your cruise ship and you can spend a while soaking up the beautiful surroundings.

15:30: Explore on a kayak – It’s time to get active with a trip out on a kayak to Light & Dark Cave.

The caves aren’t actually a cave, instead you pass through a short cave-like tunnel before arriving in a huge “hidden” lagoon surrounded by cliffs. It’s really stunning and a fun way to spend the afternoon.

If you don’t know how to kayak, you can also jump onboard a bamboo boat that gets rowed by local people. That way, you can still experience the beauty of Light & Dark Cave, without having to paddle yourself.

17:30: Free time – After a busy day of travel and exploring Halong Bay, it’s time to return to the boat and chill out.

Relax on the deck and watch as the sun sets over the famous jutting peaks, take a swim around the cruise ship or perhaps enjoy the swimming pool. There is also a spa onboard, so you could also take advantage of the massage services.

18: Vietnamese cooking demonstration – What better place to learn how to cook a classic Vietnamese dish or two than surrounded by the iconic Halong Bay scenery.

The onboard cooking class will be led by a local cook who’ll teach you and a small group how to whip up some mouthwatering meals.

19: Dinner – Finally, it’s time to enjoy the fruits of your labour and sit down to a meal with your fellow passengers.

Dining on the deck under the stars is the perfect way to round up a day of discovery in northern Vietnam.

21: Night squid fishing – The day isn’t over quite yet. Nighttime brings the chance to catch fresh squid in the waters surrounding the boat.

Learn the ropes from the guides on board and try your luck at catching squid that live in the bay.

Ha Long Bay Cruise Day 2

6:30: Tai Chi class – Rise and Shine. The second day of your Halong Bay cruise begins by seizing the day and joining a morning Tai Chi session on the sundeck of the ship.

Greeting the day by taking part in this moving meditation is the ideal way to really appreciate where you are and prepare yourself for a day full of discovery ahead.

7:30: Breakfast – You’ve moved your body, now it’s time to fuel up with some fresh breakfast along with your fellow passengers.

8:30: Transfer to Cat Ba Island – Next up, you’re going to head off on a cruise to Cat Ba Island and around Halong Bay.

This part of the trip isn’t done on the main cruise ship, instead, you get transferred to a smaller day cruise ship. The cruise through Halong Bay is very scenic so you’re going to want to snap a lot of pictures.

On arriving at Cat Ba Island, you’ll be given a bike to cycle to Viet Hai Village. The route is very pretty with lush forests clinging to limestone cliffs that are surrounded by rice paddies.

At the local village, there’s the chance to see traditional houses and experience a more laid-back, rural way of life.

12: Back to the cruise ship for lunch – After a busy morning, lunch is enjoyed back onboard the smaller cruise ship. Make sure to fill up as an active afternoon awaits.

14: Kayak to Ba Trai Dao – It’s time to get back out on the water on a kayak and explore more of Halong Bay’s hidden gems.

Your guide will lead you to Ba Trai Dao, another attractive lagoon area that’s similar to Light & Dark Cave.

17:30: Back to Aspira Cruise main boat – At the end of the day, you’ll be taken back to the main cruise ship where you can spend some time unwinding on board after an action-packed day.

19:30: Dinner – One of the best things about a Halong Bay two night cruise is that you get to really soak up the scenery of the area.

Spending a second night on the ship allows you to kick back, unwind and soak up the area’s natural beauty. And there’s no better way to do that than to enjoy a delicious meal with your fellow passengers.

Ha Long Bay Cruise Day 3

6:30: Sunrise Tai Chi lesson – Another beautiful morning on your Halong Bay three day cruise starts with Tai Chi at sunrise.

7:30: Breakfast – Enjoy a tasty breakfast on the boat and get ready for your last day of adventure in Halong.

8:30: Kayaking to a fishing village or swimming to Ba Trai Dao Beach – The last activity of your trip will usually involve taking a kayak out to explore a local fishing village, or you might spend a few hours swimming around the picturesque Ba Trai Dao Beach.

11:30: Disembark & return to port – It’s time to head back to the bustling streets of Hanoi or you might be making your way on your Vietnam itinerary.

What does a Halong Bay overnight cruise include?

Halong Bay cruise itineraries vary depending on the company you use.

Most cruise tour companies will include the same sorts of activities. Think kayaking, cooking classes and swim stops. For a more in-depth itinerary, you might want to spend a little more and book a Halong Bay luxury cruise.

Before booking your cruise make sure to check what’s included in the price. Generally speaking, most cruises will include all activities, transfers and all meals.

One thing ours didn’t include was drinks, so just bear in mind you’ll have to pay extra for both alcoholic and soft drinks.

Is a Halong Bay 2-night cruise worth it?

Honestly? I would say no. I think it’s definitely worth the time, money and effort to visit Ha Long Bay, but embarking on a one-night Halong Bay cruise is enough.

In my opinion one night is enough, as it gives you enough time to see what the beautiful scenery has to offer.

One reason that a Halong Bay two night cruise isn’t really worth it is the activities. You end up repeating pretty much the same activities over the three days you’re onboard.

The extra day isn’t used to go somewhere new or completely different, as it needs to stay in the area to receive the new 1-night guests. You just end up doing and seeing more of the same.

Plus, Ha Long Bay cruises are all pretty expensive, even the cheaper options. It doesn’t make much sense to spend so much more to not receive anything more.

In short, one night is enough to see all the good bits: see Halong Bay at sunset, experience the bay at night time, all while having a luxury stay onboard the boat.

Two nights just has a much higher price tag than seems reasonable for more of the same.

What to pack for a Halong Bay cruise

Passport/visa documents: You usually need these to book a Halong Bay cruise in the first place, and you may actually be turned away if you don’t have them with you when you embark. Best to bring just in case.

Raincoat : This is a Southeast Asia essential for wet season travel. Nobody wants to get soaked when you’re out trying to sightsee, or trying to have a luxurious time aboard a boat!

Sunscreen : And when it’s sunny you’ll want sunscreen to protect from sunburn and harmful UV rays.

Sunhat and sunglasses : Same reason as above. It’s not fun getting sunburnt!

3 daagse cruise halong bay

Traditional cruise boats in Halong Bay, Vietnam

Traditional cruise boats in Halong Bay, Vietnam

Hiking shoes : Some sturdy footwear that you know won’t slip on rocks is a good idea for hiking activities on a Halong Bay cruise.

Water bottle : Many cruises give you complimentary water, but if you have a decently sized refillable bottle of your own, fill that before you come so you have a reserve supply.

Power bank : If you join an overnight cruise you will have sockets to charge in your cabin, but if it’s a day cruise you might not have easy access. So better safe than sorry, you don’t want your phone dying on you as you snap pictures of Halong Bay!

Adapter : There are actually three different plug types used in Vietnam, so it’s best just to get a universal adapter so you’re prepared.

Best time to visit Halong Bay

For the best chance of fine, dry days, October to November is the best time to explore Halong Bay. Temperatures are mild and the rain usually stays away.

Visiting anytime between February to April may be cheaper, but it also means that the famous bay won’t look anywhere near as impressive when compared to the dry season as there’s a lot of drizzle and fog.

While some would argue that the misty gives Ha Long Bay an air of ethereal and mysterious beauty, having visited in March (we were constantly surrounded by grey fog and covered by grey skies), I would argue that’s not true and visiting in dry season is better.

High season runs between May to September, and sees crowds of domestic tourists also making their way to the region.

Final thoughts on the best 3-day 2-night cruise Halong Bay

There you have it, the ultimate guide to doing a 3-day 2-night cruise in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam! Have you done an overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

Ha Long Bay is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and famous sights in Vietnam. However, while I definitely recommend joining an overnight cruise, I don’t personally think a 2-night cruise is worth it.

Save some money, and put that budget towards seeing other beautiful places in Vietnam like Ninh Binh (with its iconic sights like Hang Mua Viewpoint , Bich Dong Pagoda and Bai Dinh Pagoda ), or Sapa .

Because at the end of the day, the extra day will just have you repeating more of the same activities. One night will be enough to kayak through the caves, see the stunning views and enjoy a luxurious cruise experience.

I hope you found my guide about Halong Bay cruises useful, and that it will help you choose the perfect 2-night 3-day Ha Long Bay cruise for you!

WHAT KEEP OUR CRUISES GOING

3 daagse cruise halong bay

Wow!!! Best way to finish our holiday and highly recommend. Chin our cruise Manager was spot on throughout our trip. He was super friendly and helpful. The cruise boat was just amazing, we loved every second of it. Plenty of free time to chill in your room or on the top deck, the food was incredible, I felt like I was fine dining. We don’t eat fish and the Chef changed our menu for us and it was such a lovely touch, thank you.

It was a wonderful cruise. Great staff which was super helpful and professional. The boat was great and the cabine was super clean, big, luxurious with tasteful decoration and a really nice balcony which looked out on the bay. The food was good. The activities were super well organised as well. Also, Alex from BestPriceTravel was helpful, friendly, professional, and super reactive. 100% recommend.

Amazing... A cruise through one of the most beautiful bays I have ever seen in my life. The itinerary of activities is very well thought out so you can enjoy the boat, the sea and have free time to enjoy the views. The cabin is first class with a white and gray wood decoration. The staff is very nice and makes your trip an unforgettable experience. Besides the boat is barely for about 20 people, which makes your experience more personal. It is something that I would doit again without thinking. This time 4-5 days.

Important notes.

Day 1 : Hanoi – Haiphong – Halong Bay – Lan Ha Bay (Lunch+Dinner).

09h00: You will be collected from Hanoi Old Quarter to take the highway to Dinh Vu Port, Haiphong where we arrive at around 11h30. You can take special tea at Orchid Cruise’s lounge by warm welcome.

12h00: Transfer by tender to the ORCHID CRUISE . On the way to the main boat, you will have a chance to see Cai Trap canal.

Halong Bay is steeped in culture from hundreds of years ago. The bay has remained unchanged for centuries, with beautiful seas and impressive islands.

12h40: Your Halong Bay Cruise boat proceeds to Da Chong islet, where you can see a lighthouse built by the French over 100 years ago. We have lunch before continuing our journey via the islets of Con Vit and Gia Luan. These amazing limestone karst formations rise up out of the sea in an impressive manner. This area is untouched, as not many cruise ships use the route via the Cat Ba Island - Thoi Quyt area - Coc Ngoi islet - through Cua Van to Ba Trai Dao area.

14h45: We progress to Ba Trai Dao beach area of Lan Ha Bay a separate part of Halong Bay. This is a quiet tourist paradise in Vietnam. The region is known for its pristine beaches and spectacular beauty, having about 400 fascinating islands. Unlike the main, Ha Long Bay, the islands of Lan Ha Bay are forested, and most are small in stature.

15h00: We take you for a trip in the small coracles, used by fishermen for centuries. You will learn how they go about their trade, casting the nets, whilst navigating the waters in their tiny craft.

Alternatively you may prefer to try your hand at kayaking or simply just enjoy a swim. This is a great experience, immersed in the crystal clear waters of the bay, in the Ba Trai Dao area (this program applies between the months of April and November).

In the winter months, (December to March) Tourists instead, may visit Viet Hai village with guide. You will take the bicycle trip along the village path and go through rain forests and dark tunnel. Enjoy stunning scenery of rice fields on the way. Stop at the village to relax. Visit an ancient local house, made from straw, mud, bamboo…you will have chance to see the local life on a valley of local people. Optional electric cart service is available (at an extra cost).

17h45: Returning your Halong Bay Cruise boat you can watch the magnificent sunset over the Gulf of Tonkin. Onboard you may join a traditional cooking class. Our chef will instruct you in the making of some Vietnam dishes. In the early evening the boat has its Happy Hour deal.

19:30: Dinner is served. Enjoy delicious local food prepared and served for you by our wonderful onboard catering staff. This is a delightful meal in an intimate romantic setting.

21h30: Enjoy the landscape of the bay at night up on the top deck. Relax whilst enjoying drinks from the bar. Try your hand at night squid fishing, watching a movie in the restaurant or register for our massage services. Overnight on Orchid Cruise Halong Bay .

Option: Massage service available. Please book with Cruise Manager directly (please see massage menu)

23h00: End of Day One program.

09h45: Visitors then return to your Halong Bay Cruise boat for check-out procedures.

The most popular options are the budget-friendly day trips and the 2-day, 1-night cruises, but we personally recommend spending the extra time (and money) to go on a 3-day, 2-night cruise. With this option, you not only get the luxury of spending an extra night on the boat, you also get to join a day cruise and explore further into the bay for a more immersive experience. That said, consider what kind of experience you want—whether it’s a quick tour or an immersive journey with activities like kayaking, cave exploring, and Tai Chi at sunrise, the beauty of Halong Bay is sure to leave you speechless.

Note:  When you book a cruise through a booking site like GetYourGuide  or Viator , unless the listing specifically states the name of the cruise company/boat, there is no way to know what boat you are booking and you won’t be made aware of what boat you are booked on until arrival. For example, if the listing says “3-Day 2 Night Ha Long Bay 5-Star Cruise”  you could be booked on any of the cruises classified as a 5-Star Luxury Cruise. However, if it says the boat’s name in the listing, that is the boat you will be booked on. All of that to say, if you have a specific boat that you want to cruise on, we recommend booking directly with that company. If the specific boat doesn’t matter to you, then booking with GetYourGuide  or Viator  can be a hassle-free way to book your Halong Bay cruise.

2. Plan Your Transportation

Most Halong Bay cruise operators offer transportation to and from your starting destination but it does need to be arranged in advance. Thankfully, they make it pretty easy! You’ll just need to select the transportation add-on when booking. This is what we did and it worked out perfectly. We were picked up by a limousine bus from our hotel in the Old Quarter of Hanoi and transported 2.5 hours to our cruise’s departure point in Halong Bay. And while there are more budget-friendly transportation options, the convenience and extra peace of mind that this method provides are well worth the extra cost in our opinion.

3. Check the Weather Forecast

Halong Bay’s weather can be unpredictable, with fog, rain, and even the occasional storm. The best time to visit is September-November and March-May when the weather is cooler and drier. That said, we visited in March and it was cloudy, rainy, and foggy for the majority of our visit. So regardless of when you’re visiting, check the forecast a few days before your trip to avoid any surprises.

4. Pack Smart and Light

Space on the boats can be somewhat limited, so packing smart and light is a must, but don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, a bathing suit, sunglasses, a hat, insect repellent, nicer clothes for dinners onboard, and a light jacket depending on the season you visit. Also, remember that throughout your cruise, you’ll likely be partaking in a variety of activities that require different attire so keep that in mind when packing. Be sure to check the cruise schedule and activities so you’ll know what you’re in for, and check out our Halong Bay Packing List  for ideas on what to bring!

5. Prepare for Limited Connectivity

Wi-Fi is available on most cruise boats, but the connection can be spotty and cell phone connection isn’t likely. As long as you know that going in, you can prepare accordingly and embrace the opportunity to disconnect and immerse yourself in the stunning surroundings, and enjoy some digital detox. And when you’re back on dry land and in need of cell connection, we recommend purchasing an eSIM from Sim Local !

6. Be Ready for Early Mornings

Halong Bay cruises often start early, with some boats departing as early as sunrise. Once you’re on board, that doesn’t change. Whether it’s sunrise Tai Chi or an early morning kayak tour if you want to take advantage of all that your cruise offers, you’ll probably be waking up with the birds. And while waking up at the crack of dawn might not be your idea of a vacation, the serene morning views are worth it. Plus, you’ll have the rest of the day to relax and explore!

7. Expect Crowds

I wish I could say that Halong Bay is all rainbows and butterflies, and while it is stunning and well worth a visit, it is far from a hidden gem. In fact, more than 2.5 million people visit the UNESCO World Heritage site each year, so be prepared for large crowds and long lines at some of the area's more popular sights like Titop Island, Sung Sot Cave, and certain kayak excursions to name a few. This is why we recommend spending the extra time and money to go on a 3-day, 2-night cruise. This way you’ll get to venture further into the bay and explore areas that many of the shorter cruises never make it to.

8. Try the Local Cuisine

Meals are typically included with your cruise package, which makes for a fantastic opportunity to sample different Vietnamese dishes. Expect fresh seafood, delicious spring rolls, and other local specialties. We especially enjoyed the spring rolls (fresh and fried), the Cha Muc (Grilled Chopped Squid) , and the fresh local fruit! If you have dietary restrictions, be sure to inform your cruise operator in advance.

9. Don’t Miss the Nightlife on Board

Most cruises offer evening entertainment like squid fishing, karaoke, or just stargazing from the deck. Regardless of the activity, it can be a fun way to meet other travelers as you wind down after a day of exploring, and it adds an extra layer to your Halong Bay experience.

10. Bring Cash for Tips and Extras

While most of your cruise expenses will be covered, it’s customary to tip the crew. Additionally, if you plan to purchase drinks or souvenirs, or participate in optional activities, having some cash on hand is helpful.

A Halong Bay cruise is more than just a sightseeing tour; it’s an unforgettable experience that allows you to connect with nature, enjoy local culture, and escape the hustle and bustle of the big city.
