East Coast travel FAQs

Do i need a visa to travel to united states.

It depends on where you’re from. Many countries now operate under the United States Visa Waiver Program, meaning a visa isn’t required for stays of up to 90 days for travel purposes. There are 40 participating countries, including the United Kingdom , Australia , New Zealand, Germany and Spain.

If you're eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, you must obtain a letter of authorization before you travel to the States. This can be obtained by submitting an application through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation ( ESTA ).

If you’re a national from a non-participating country of the Visa Waiver Program, you must apply for a non-immigrant visa. Please see the Department of State website for more information.

If you have traveled to Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on or after 1 March 2011, you are ineligible and must apply for a non-immigrant visa instead.

People from a participating country who are also citizens of Cuba, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Syria or Sudan must also apply for a non-immigrant visa.

Is tipping customary in the US?

Tipping is very much a part of the culture in the United States. Tips are expected at restaurants, cafes and diners, as well as by taxi drivers, valet attendants, porters and hotel maids.

People working in the service industry generally receive low wages and therefore rely upon tips as a major source of income.

In general, leave 15 to 20% of the bill at places serving food and a few dollars to bartenders and hotel staff who provide a personal service like carrying bags or cleaning your room.

What is the internet access like in the US?

Internet access is excellent in the US, and internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my cell phone while in the US?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in most parts of the US although coverage may be patchy in remote, mountainous areas like national parks and canyons. Ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive.

What are the toilets like in the US?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in the US.

What is ATM access like in the US?

ATMs are common in the US, so finding one won't be a problem in most towns and cities.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Welcome to Eastern United States

The east coast of the United States is where it all started in 1925... when a traveling salesman named Arthur Tauck designed a new kind of "vacation". We have grown by leaps and bounds since then with journeys now on all seven continents, but it is the east coast region that we hold close to our hearts. Enriching travel experiences exist in... the wilderness of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park... aboard a Maine lobsterman's boat as he hauls in his catch... at a clambake on Cape Cod... and on our journeys that capture the kaleidoscope of fall colors throughout this entire region.

Ken burns american journeys, exclusive to tauck – telling the american story through ken burns american journeys.

Filmmakers Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan, America's premier storytellers, work alongside Tauck's team of tour architects to meticulously craft enriching travel experiences throughout the US. They bring to life the themes and stories from their award-winning documentary films, sharing exclusive insights into the people, places and events that shaped the history of the United States, taking guests' travel experiences to a deeper level. Together, we've created over 100 original film vignettes, developed new tours and Tauck Ken Burns Events, and enhanced existing special Events.

New York, New York

There's no other like it... discovering new york city with tauck.

On "The Hudson Valley," New York City is… seeing Rockefeller Center, Times Square, Radio City Music Hall, the Chrysler and Empire State buildings… learning the story of the construction of a Rockefeller Center skyscraper right after the 1929 stock market crash as you view the city from 70 floors up… visiting the poignant National September 11 Memorial & Museum, set within the footprints of the Twin Towers… meeting a NYPD detective who shares insights on the tragedy of 9/11 and the recovery efforts that followed…

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Only on cape cod....

If you had to boil down "New England" into one place, it might be Cape Cod, extending from the Massachusetts mainland out into the Atlantic. Near the spot where the Pilgrims first landed, it's home to Cape Cod National Seashore, protecting dunes, beaches, marshes, ponds, historic lighthouses and wild cranberry bogs; Provincetown on the tip of the Cape, once a key whaling town, now world-renowned as an arts colony and major summer resort known simply as "P-Town;" and a delicious regional specialty plucked directly from local waters which you may know as "lobster," but locals call "lobstahh."

Boston, Massachusetts

Along the historic streets of boston.

History is indeed alive around every corner of Boston, Massachusetts, often called America's "cradle of liberty"… on green Boston Common, at the Old North Church and Faneuil Hall, along the cobblestone streets of Beacon Hill, in the diverse neighborhoods of the North End with ethnic flavors all their own, aboard "Old Ironsides" at the USS Constitution Museum… and at beloved Fenway Park, Major League Baseball's oldest stadium, home of the Red Sox since 1912…

20 Best Places to Visit on the East Coast of the USA

Written by Shandley McMurray Updated Mar 20, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Author Shandley McMurray lived in New York City and is currently based in Connecticut. She travels the East Coast in search of stellar beaches and pretty parks.

America's East Coast is a marvel. From Maine in the north to Florida in the south, its rugged natural beauty and bustling cities beg to be explored. Whether you're a fan of skiing , kayaking, eating, shopping, or visiting museums, you'll find a slew of fun things to do in the best places to visit on the East Coast.

This stunning coastal region is home to some of America's most incredible attractions . We're talking alligator-filled canals in the Florida Everglades , winding trails and lakes in Maine's Acadia National Park , and the bright lights and thousands of stores in New York City . No wonder so many tourists flock to America's Atlantic shores.

From watching a musical on Broadway to visiting the White House to climbing one of the Smoky Mountains or lounging on the soft, golden sand of Florida's best beaches , you won't ever get bored on America's East Coast, we promise!

For more sightseeing ideas, see our list of the best places to visit on the East Coast of the USA.

1. New York, New York

2. boston, massachusetts, 3. miami, florida, 4. acadia national park, maine, 5. washington, d.c., 6. baltimore, maryland, 7. shenandoah national park, virginia, 8. charleston, south carolina, 9. savannah, georgia, 10. philadelphia, pennsylvania, 11. charlotte, north carolina, 12. myrtle beach, south carolina, 13. the outer banks, north carolina, 14. orlando, florida, 15. great smoky mountains national park, tennessee and north carolina, 16. everglades national park, florida, 17. lake placid, ny, 18. niagara falls, new york, 19. martha's vineyard, massachusetts, 20. stowe, vermont, map of places to visit on the east coast of the usa.

New York City

Gourmet restaurants, famous tourist attractions, fabulous street art, and designer duds — New York has them all and so much more. Whatever you're looking for, you'll find it in the Big Apple, guaranteed. The only problem you'll face is running out of time to do everything.

You'll want to sightsee (hello Empire State Building , Statue of Liberty , and Brooklyn Bridge ), shop, see a show, and reward your palate with some of the world's tastiest food (we're salivating over Gramercy Tavern and Daniel ). When you're through with all of that, you'll need to make time for the long list of stellar museums . The Metropolitan Museum of Art , MOMA , Guggenheim , and American Museum of Natural History all top the list.

Short on cash? There's plenty to do that won't dent your pocketbook. A few of our fave free activities include watching the sunset from a rooftop patio, wandering the paths of Central Park , walking the High Line , window shopping in SOHO , and people-watching from a park bench in Union Square .

Our advice: plan your itinerary before leaving home. That way you won't waste precious seconds standing on a street corner deciding where to go next. Plus, if you buy your tickets online (i.e. to Broadway shows or major attractions) you'll find much better prices. With so many exciting things to do in New York, it's not surprising that it's been deemed one of the best places to visit on the East Coast.

Note: The best time to visit New York City is between April and June or September through November. This way, you'll avoid the sweltering temps and smell of rotting garbage that permeate the city in summer, and the crowds and high prices that permeate this season.

Boston, Massachusetts

It's easy to fall in love with Boston in any season. The city's cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and beautiful harbor beckon visitors to grab their cameras and stay a while. In the heart of the town center, charming Quincy Market invites tourists to sample delicious foods and practice a bit of retail therapy.

One of the top things to do in this revolutionary city is walk the Freedom Trail . Winding its way around the center, this famous path passes 16 important historic sites (like the Old State House , Paul Revere House , Boston Common , and the site of the Boston Massacre ), all of which bring the past to life.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace is where it's at. With buskers, street performers, food stalls, and eclectic shops, you could spend hours in this fun spot. When walking around, don't miss out on Beacon Hill , the city's most captivating neighborhood. And plan to spend time in Boston's most popular parks ; a picnic is highly recommended.

Whether you're a baseball fan or not, Fenway Park is worth a visit if only to see the Green Monster up close. This 37-foot green wall boasts a historic hand-operated scoreboard.

Tip: the Boston Ghosts & Gravestones Nighttime Trolley Tour is a fun and unforgettable thing to do at night.

View of Miami's skyline across the water

One of the top tourist destinations in the U.S. , Miami is a place to see and be seen. Its streets are lined with funky and high-end shops, Art Deco buildings, and beautiful people. People flock to this coastal Floridian town for a variety of reasons.

Miami Beach is the top draw. Its soft, white sand beckons bathing-suit clad bodies to sprawl out for a day spent frolicking in and out of the warm turquoise water.

The boardwalk, situated behind South Beach , is a source of entertainment in and of itself. From rollerblading grandfathers wearing speedos to stiletto-clad fashionistas carrying dogs in their purses, anything goes.

Not a fan of buzzy beaches? Miami boasts a variety of quieter, yet beautiful beaches ideal for enjoying a fun day at the shore with the family.

Next up is the South Beach neighborhood's trendy Art Deco Historic District. This is a perfect place to spend time when you're sick of feeling sand between your toes. It's where you'll find a ton of shops, restaurants, and a happening nighttime scene.

With so many tourist attractions in Miami , there's no chance of getting bored. To make the most of your trip, though, it's important to time it right. April is one of the best months to visit, as the weather is ideal for exploring and the crowds have thinned (except over Easter).

The Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse in Acadia National Park, Maine

It's easy to lose yourself in Acadia National Park, and not just in the physical sense. The beauty on offer in this natural wonderland is so spectacular, you'll forget you ever had a worry.

The only national park in New England and the first national park in the east of the US, Acadia boasts immense forests and a dramatic coastline. No wonder it's become one of the top 10 most visited national parks in the US--it is deemed one of the country's best national parks , after all.

With 158 miles of hiking trails and over 70 miles of roads (both motor and carriage) to explore, visitors should plan to spend a good deal of time here. Many choose to camp overnight.

Those who prefer to sleep in a comfy bed should stay in nearby Bar Harbor, an adorable town often used as a base for exploring the park.

Cherry blossoms and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Best known for its role as the nation's capital, Washington is packed with iconic monuments and memorials. The city's top four tourist attractions include, the White House , Capitol Building , Washington Monument , and the Lincoln Memorial . You haven't really been to Washington if you haven't seen these.

There are a ton of other visit-worthy attractions , especially for those in search of first-hand political history. The vast National Mall houses most of the city's grandest icons, including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Women's Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, and American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial.

One of the city's biggest draws, though, has less to do with the political climate. Its renowned museums and galleries are some of the best in the world. Don't miss the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum , the National Gallery of Art , or the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History .

Tourists would be amiss for skipping out on a few hours spent wandering through the city's pretty parks . Pack a picnic to make the visit more enjoyable. Want to make your trip even more memorable? Visit between late March and early April, which is the best time to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom.

Baltimore, Maryland

Nicknamed "Charm City," Baltimore may well be one of the friendliest places in the U.S. A port town featuring a good mix of the historic (like Fort McHenry , which inspired the National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner ) and trendy (like boutique hotels and eclectic shops), Baltimore is worth a visit at any time of the year.

Top attractions worth visiting include Walters Art Museum , the National Aquarium, and the American Visionary Art Museum . You'll find most of the action in the Inner Harbor , which was updated in the late 70s. Today, the harbor bustles with visitors to its fun stores and impressive eateries. Most of the excitement, though, can be found outside. Street performers and musicians hosting open-air concerts are regulars at this hub.

Shenandoah National Park

Nature's calling, and it wants you to get outside — now! That would be an easy feat if you lived close to Virginia's top tourist attraction , the spectacular Shenandoah National Park. With beautiful wildflowers, giant rolling hills, cascading waterfalls, and verdant forests, there's nothing to dislike in this natural paradise. Keep quiet and look closely; you might even spot a deer, black bear, or bobcat.

Before settling in for one of Shenandoah's beautiful hiking trails , visit one of the park's two visitor centers: Dickey Ridge or Harry F. Byrd . The park covers a whopping 200,000 acres, so you'll want a map to help guide you.

Not big on hiking? Don't worry, there are 400 miles worth of trails to choose from in varying forms of length and intensity. Beginners will favor Traces , which is less than two miles each way, while a more advanced hiker may opt for the more strenuous White Oak Canyon (over nine miles return).

As one of the most popular places to visit for a weekend getaway , it's best to book a hotel early to ensure you have a place to stay if you're visiting in the high season.

Charleston, South Carolina

Every local you meet seems to wear a smile that extends from ear to ear, and they speak in a Southern drawl that's utterly enticing. They'll direct you through the town's brick-laid streets to its most stellar attractions , like the harbor's Waterfront Park , Middleton Place , and Magnolia Plantation & Gardens .

Hop on a carriage ride through the Historic District . With over 1,400 ancient structures to ogle, Charleston transports each visitor back in time to its tumultuous heyday during the 18 th century. With a variety of top resorts to choose from, tourists will be ensured of a comfy place to rest at the end of a busy day.

Sunrise on the waterfront in Savannah

Walking through Savannah's tree-lined cobbled streets is akin to jumping out of a page in Gone with the Wind . Moss-laden oak trees usher you around the city's main attractions , offering a comforting piece of shade in the numerous public squares and parks.

Historic Bull Street , home to City Hall , also houses Chippewa Square , which you might recognize from the film Forrest Gump .

Don't miss Forsyth Park , a mid-19 th -century marvel featuring a huge cast-iron fountain. You'll also want to add the National Museum of the Mighty Eight Air Force and Telfair Academy to your "to-see" list.

While visiting a cemetery may not top your "things to do" list, Bonaventure Cemetery will change your mind. The stone monuments, obelisks, and lush blooms are so beautiful, you'll forget that some believe this place is haunted.

Downtown Philadelphia

Like Washington, D.C., Philadelphia (a.k.a. Philly) is best known for its role in US history (in particular during colonial and revolutionary times). It was here that the Declaration of Independence was signed (at Independence Hall ). Eleven years later, the Constitution was created right here.

Today, you'll find a wide mix of modern skyscrapers and bright art murals juxtaposed with historic redbrick terrace buildings and narrow cobblestone streets. The Liberty Bell Pavilion houses the liberty bell, a long-held symbol of freedom and independence. Philadelphia's Magic Gardens , an incredible immersive mixed media experience, features walls (and floors) covered in mosaics.

Hop in a horse and buggy and ride through Independence National Historical Park , or shop for local produce, Amish bread, clothes, and jewelry at the Reading Terminal Market . There are plenty of fun things to do in Philadelphia .

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach is the crowning glory of South Carolina, and one of its most popular places to visit . Its neon lights, constant musical entertainment, giant spinning Ferris wheel (a.k.a. SkyWheel ), and boardwalk games feel (and look) as if a fairy lit them up with a magic wand. Basically, Myrtle Beach is like New York's Coney Island or England's Brighton Beach on steroids.

The fantastical stretch of this top South Carolina beach is called the Grand Strand , and it proffers visitors 60 miles of sun-drenched sand on which to relax. When they become bored (which isn't likely due to the vast people-watching on offer), beachgoers can avail themselves of the multitude of kitsch — from mini-putt courses to souvenir shops to WonderWorks Myrtle Beach .

Ripley's Aquarium is worth a visit, as is the Priates Voyage , a dinner show you won't forget. The city is packed with so many fun things to do for couples and families, that it's hard to leave.

It's easy to see why so many people make the Outer Banks their summer holiday destination. Offering over 100 miles of quietly gorgeous coastal scenery, charming villages, adorable rental cottages, and authentic restaurants, this locale is both invigorating and revitalizing.

A string of slivered barrier islands are connected to the mainland by bridges, making their beaches feel more dreamy and exclusive . Also known as OBX, the Outer Banks is a perfect place to unwind and leave the hustle and bustle of busy city life behind you.

The 20 Prettiest Beach Towns In The South

From Texas to Virginia, these coastal towns are picture perfect.

best east coast usa tours

Robbie Caponetto

There are many reasons to fall in love with a particular beach . It could be a haven for shell-seekers. Or the perfect place to catch some waves. Maybe the sand feels extra soft between your toes. Or it could be one of the prettiest spots you've ever laid eyes on, like this collection of beaches.

Some of the most picturesque shorelines in the country are these spots found throughout the Southern coasts. Many of these beaches are longtime favorites, like St. Augustine or Port Aransas. Others, like Ocean Springs or Grand Isle, might be less familiar. The one thing that they all have in common is their breathtaking beauty.

Whether you prefer the Gulf or Atlantic beaches on the east coast , there's a stretch of sand and sea on this list that's sure to inspire your next vacation . Or at least give you somewhere gorgeous to dream about.

Alabama: Fairhope

This gem on Mobile Bay along the shimmering Gulf of Mexico has a charming little downtown complete with a waterfront park, a pair of lovely beaches, and a fishing pier. An added (and somewhat secret) charm: Point Clear is located just to the south, with a stunning bayside walking path that begins from the equally picturesque and gracious Grand Hotel Golf Resort and Spa.

Delaware: Rehoboth Beach

If you can’t imagine a getaway without your favorite furry friend, set your sights on Delaware’s Rehoboth Beach. You’ll want to stay at the Canalside Inn where Fido’s welcome and dog amenities are plentiful. Hit the beach and when you come back, Canalside Inn has outdoor doggie showers to rinse off those sandy paws.

Delaware: Bethany Beach

Bethany Beach is a family-friendly town with its nostalgic, pedestrian-only boardwalk and mile-long strand right on the Atlantic. The Delaware shoreline delights with mechanical cleaning three times a week to maintain the real postcard image of the Atlantic Shoreline. Nearby coastal towns offer shopping, hiking, and museums sharing the area's history, making this a great summertime escape for the entire family.

Florida: Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island is what beach town dreams are made of. You won't find any hotel chains or condominium towers here, just a collection of tropical-style homes and friendly neighbors who wave from golf carts. Stretching from the bay to the gulf, Pine Avenue is the perfect place to shop funky boutiques, dine at local cafes, and get a feel for that ultimate island lifestyle. Make sure to grab a Margarita Donut or some other crazy confection from The Donut Experiment for breakfast.

Florida: St. Augustine

From the ramparts of its 17th-century Castillo de San Marcos to the old-world streetscapes of the historic district and its oak-canopied roads, this storied city on Florida's Atlantic coastline is nearly picture-perfect. This scenic town includes seven white-sand beautiful beaches, stretching from Vilano Beach in the north to Crescent Beach in the south. Ghost tours and horse-drawn carriage rides transport you into the past, adding old-world charm to this breathtaking beachy town.

Georgia: Tybee Island

This barrier island beach town is a stone's throw from the numerous refinements of Savannah. Tybee Island offers the perfect complement of colorful and tiny cottages, seafood shacks, and miles of wide Atlantic-facing beaches. Sneak in a visit on the North Beach Birding Trail near Tybee's famous lighthouse.

Georgia: St. Simons Island

Getty Images/DorothyBlahnik

One of Georgia's largest barrier islands, St. Simons Island, is known for its wide variety of things to do. In addition to typical water activities like fishing, swimming, and kayaking, there's also plenty to explore in town, including art and antique shops, farmer's markets, wine tastings, live music, and great restaurants. The Pier Village downtown is great for spending an afternoon shopping, strolling, and sipping. Learn more about the island's history at Fort Frederica National Monument, the WWII museum, and the historic St. Simons Island Lighthouse.

Louisiana: Grand Isle

Perched near the toe of Louisiana's boot, this barrier island has survived more than its share of challenges from both Mother Nature (hurricanes) and Modern Man (oil spills). But Grand Isle has survived. Renowned for its fishing and bird habitat, this beautiful town is a little-known gem on the Gulf of Mexico.

Louisiana: North Beach

If the Great Lakes prove anything, it's that an ocean isn't necessary to have a perfect beach day. Located on Louisiana's Lake Charles , there's always something happening on the white sand shores of North Beach. A scenic promenade on the lakeshore links three popular Lake Charles parks, where events and festivals are hosted year-round. The beach is popular for beach volleyball, beachcombing, and picnicking. Plus, you won't have to worry about saltwater stinging your eyes!

Maryland: St. Michaels

This gorgeous Eastern Shore enclave has everything in spades—a spectacular waterfront resort, a stunning maritime museum, a humming little downtown, and charming historic homes. It seems Chesapeake Bay's broad and captivating vistas are everywhere within sight.

Mississippi: Ocean Springs

Lined with live oaks and old-fashioned, busy storefronts, this artsy town on the Gulf of Mexico has no commercial development marring its shoreline. The streets lead to a pale-sand public beach with a fishing pier, a charming park, and glistening views of the delicate and pristine Gulf Islands. It is equally known for its arts and festivals, and downtown is home to many independent shops and galleries.

Mississippi: Bay St. Louis

This quirky town on the Mississippi coast is a haven for creatives and an oasis for anyone looking for a quiet vacation. Just 51 miles away from New Orleans, Bay St. Louis couldn't feel further from the hustle and bustle. It's positioned on the Mississippi Sound, an embayment of the Gulf of Mexico, which provides an awe-worthy stretch of white-sand beach with virtually no crowds. Come happy hour, grab a seat at Daiquiri Shak for—you guessed it—daiquiris, which come in over a dozen different flavors. Then, grab a lobster roll from Thorny Oyster.

North Carolina: Southport

There are scenic postcards, and then there's Southport, which has them beat. In this tiny harbor town near the Cape Fear River outlet, you'll find white cottages with red roofs, stately sea captains' homes, two lighthouses, and water in seemingly every direction. Catch the ferry and visit Bald Head Island , which is so private that even cars are not allowed on the island.

North Carolina: Carolina Beach

It's not just all about the fun to be had driving on the broad sands of this southern coast getaway at the northern end of Pleasure Island; or hitting its vintage boardwalk (which features old-school amusement rides in summer), lively beach bars, and superb seafood spots. This classic summer vacation spot is also home to natural gifts, including Carolina Beach State Park, with some of the area's finest fishing and the Flytrap Trail, named for the carnivorous Venus Flytrap plants along its path.

South Carolina: Sullivan's Island

At the mouth of Charleston Harbor, this tiny, primarily residential community sits along 3.3 miles of Atlantic shoreline. Sullivan's Island is a quiet, Lowcountry jewel with stunning beach houses in gracious lines along protected beaches. This hidden gem is a thoughtful mix of preserved nature and modern-day adventure.

South Carolina: Fripp Island

Courtesy Discover South Carolina

Only three and a half miles long and about a half-mile wide, Fripp Island is a sanctuary worth seeing. Located just 25 minutes from Beaufort, South Carolina, here you'll find the perfect place to put your towel down on laidback beaches, only leaving to visit a handful of restaurants or do something sporty like tennis, golf, or boating. You'll also find a popular trail maintained by the Audubon Club that not only gives great views of land and water wildlife, but of more than 175 bird species.

Texas: Galveston

Strung along a narrow barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston is a beautiful blend of graceful Victorian and early 20th-century mansions, bungalows, cottages, and a stunning historic downtown lined with tall palm trees and live oaks. To explore an exotic locale without leaving the states, visit the Moody Gardens. The conservation, rehabilitation, and recreational hub is home to tropical animal species from the rainforest and aquatic attractions.

Texas: Port Aransas

This sleepy fishing village has long been a nostalgic vacation spot for generations of Texas families. Perhaps the biggest draw of Port Aransas is its broad, walkable beachfronts with firm sand, gentle surf, and warm water that lasts well into the fall months. Beach activities range from sandcastle building to surfing lessons. And you can't forget what the town is best known for--fishing. Closer to the shore and in the bay, the daily catch could include redfish, flounder, black drum, and trout. Farther out in the Gulf waters, offshore trophies such as tuna, kingfish, sailfish, and marlin prove bountiful game.

Virginia: Cape Charles

Fronting the Chesapeake Bay, this once-sleepy beach town with stately Victorian houses is transformed from its days as a former railroad hub to a small-town vacation destination. Located at the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula, white-sand beaches line the coast of one of "America's Happiest Seaside Towns." Vacation-goers are sparking the economy, and restaurants, breweries, and shops are popping up to meet this demand.

Virginia: Assateague Island

Joesboy/Getty Images

Assateague Island National Seashore stretches 37 miles along the Atlantic and is home to a herd of roaming wild horses. A favorite place for enjoying white-sand beaches overlooking the Atlantic, Tom's Cove, and Assateague Bay, the island is located on the Eastern Shore and is also home to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, where you'll find hiking trails, marshes, and the Assateague Lighthouse. Next door on Chincoteague Island, you can enjoy the only resort island in Virginia . In these coastal areas, you're invited to lounge on the beaches, see the sunset, and glimpse a wild pony or two.

Barely 10 miles from the picturesque city of Asheville and part of the Asheville metropolitan area, Weaverville ups the scenic quotient even further. Dubbed "America's Favorite Drive," the Blue Ridge Parkway is 15 minutes from Weaverville's Main Street.

Resting in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with breathtaking views of Great Smoky Mountain National Park, the town has a fall foliage show that lasts for many weeks, like a kaleidoscope of leaf colors, with one of the longest autumn color seasons in the country.

During most of October, fall colors are easy to find all along the Blue Ridge Parkway, from 2,200 feet to 6,000+ feet in elevation. Visitors should expect slow traffic in the fall, especially on Saturdays and Sundays. Lake Louise is a five-acre artificial lake that comes alive in fall with bursts of orange, red, and gold color.

This Southern City Was Named the Best Place to Live on the U.S. East Coast

The standings are part of The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Index.

Atlanta has been going through a growth spurt. Earlier this year, the Georgia capital’s metropolitan area was named one of the country’s biggest in population growth, according to the U.S. Census Bureau , gaining nearly 69,000 residents between 2022 and 2023. It’s no surprise so many people are migrating to the area, as it was just named the second-best U.S. city to live in by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Global Liveability Index . (The only American city that ranked higher was Honolulu, making Atlanta the No. 1 on the East Coast.)

The annual study by The Economist Group’s research division looks at 30 living standard factors in 173 cities, considering areas like infrastructure; health care; stability; education; and culture and environment. In particular, Atlanta ranked especially high for infrastructure, stability, and culture.

Atlanta also made the EIU study’s list of biggest movers up in the rankings over the last year, rising four positions up to No. 29. The only other U.S. city to jump up so many spots was Pittsburgh, which also leaped four spots to No. 30.

One of the main draws is that business is steady in Atlanta, which was named the best metro area to start a business by LinkedIn last fall . It’s home to major corporations like Delta, Coca-Cola, and Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport — the latter of which is the state’s largest employer with more than 63,000 employees.

The area’s film and television industry has also been thriving, with more than a dozen studios in the region, including the 330-acre Tyler Perry Studios , which the filmmaker took over in 2015; the nearly 1,000-acre Trilith Studios , which has become the go-to home base for superhero movies; and the shiny new Assembly Studios , which just opened in November.

Despite its moniker of "Hotlanta," the climate is actually quite temperate , with an average annual temperature of 61 degrees. Though July can average 89 degrees and January can hit 34 degrees. That said, there are typically more than 300 days of sunny weather, making it well-suited for outdoor activities.

One of the best places to experience it is on the 22-mile BeltLine trail system on a former railway track, including stops at Ponce City Market and Piedmont Park. And just outside of Atlanta is Sandy Springs , an under-the-radar suburb famous for its green spaces and trails.

Following Honolulu and Atlanta, the rest of the top 10 U.S. most livable cities were Pittsburgh; Seattle; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Boston; Miami; San Francisco; and Minneapolis.

You Won’t Want to Miss August’s Rare Super Blue Moon. Here’s How and When You Can See It

O n the heels of  the exciting Perseid meteor shower, the public will be graced with another thrilling night sky moment.

On Monday evening, you’ll have more of a reason than usual to gaze up at the sky, as August’s rare super blue moon will take center stage for the pleasure of photographers, astronomers, and casual viewers.

Here's what to know about the celestial event:

What is a super blue moon?

A super blue moon is simultaneously a full moon, blue moon, and a super moon.

The first of these three is pretty well known to us: a phase in the lunar cycle in which the Earth, sun, and moon are aligned with the Earth in the middle, so the moon is fully illuminated on Earth.

A blue moon is not about the color of the moon, but instead the frequency of the full moon. There are two definitions of a blue moon—the first describes when there are two full moons in a single month. Since the moon’s cycle is 29.5 days, and our average calendar month is 30-31 days, it is incredibly rare to have two full moons in one single month, but it is possible, happening every two to three years, according to NASA. Around 3% of full moons are blue moons.

There are also seasonal blue moons, in which a calendar season contains four full moons instead of the usual three, and the blue moon is the third of the four full moons. August’s full moon is of this variety. The next seasonal blue moon is expected in May 2027.

The super moon part refers to the moon's orbit, which brings it slightly closer to Earth this month, making it appear bigger and brighter. This occurs since the moon’s orbit around the Earth is elliptical instead of just a circle, and thus there are times when the moon is further and closer to our planet.

During the moon’s closest approach to Earth, it can appear approximately 14% larger and shine 30% brighter than when at its farthest point in the orbit. This will be the first of four consecutive super moons this year, and it is less rare than the blue moon, occurring three or four times a year.

August’s full moon is often called the Sturgeon moon , dubbed by the Algonquin Native American tribe living in the Great Lakes area and throughout what is now known as the northeastern United States. They named the full moon after sturgeons—a type of large fish—which were most plentiful in the lakes during the month of August.

How and when can you see August’s super blue moon?

The full moon's peak will occur on Monday afternoon, according to NASA , at 2:26 p.m. EDT and 11:26 a.m. PT. It will appear for three days, from Sunday morning until early Wednesday morning.

Though the moon will be visible to the naked eye, Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Ariz., says that telescope and binocular viewers will be able to see even more detail on the lunar surface than usual.

How rare is a super blue moon?

According to NASA, the combination of the super moon and the blue moon is rare, and the time between their occurrences is quite “irregular” and could be as much as 20 years, with 10 years between the average.

Though we had a super blue moon somewhat recently, in August 2023, NASA predicts the next super blue moons will occur in January and March 2037. All the more reason to make sure you don’t miss 2024’s offering.

Carnival, Royal Caribbean and more change cruise itineraries amid Hurricane Ernesto

Portrait of Nathan Diller

Cruise lines are changing itineraries in an effort to avoid Hurricane Ernesto . The storm brought heavy rain and wind to Puerto Rico Wednesday, leaving close to half the island without power and prompting flash flood warnings. The Virgin Islands also felt the impacts.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Pride ship, which left from Baltimore for a Bermuda cruise on Sunday, moved its visit to the island up by one day, arriving on Tuesday and leaving on Thursday, the cruise line said.

Carnival Magic skipped a planned stop in San Juan on Wednesday and will make an additional stop in Nassau in the Bahamas on Friday. The ship left Miami on Sunday for an Eastern Caribbean cruise.

“As the safety of our guests and crew is our priority, we will continue to watch the storm and factor in guidance from the National Hurricane Center, U.S. Coast Guard and the local port authorities to provide timely updates as more information becomes available,” the cruise line said in a news release .

Norwegian Cruise Line rerouted Eastern Caribbean cruises on its Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Breakaway ships to the Western Caribbean, according to a spokesperson. The ships departed from Miami on Monday and Sunday, respectively.

Their new itineraries include Roatan in Honduras, Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico and Harvest Caye in Belize (Sky will also stop in Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios in Jamaica).

Norwegian Joy , which left for a Bermuda cruise from New York on Sunday, arrived at the island on Tuesday, one day ahead of schedule. While the ship will spend two nights at the Royal Naval Dockyard as planned, it will depart Thursday, a day earlier than planned.

“The safety and security of our guests, crew and the communities we visit is a top priority,” a spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Royal Caribbean International’s Rhapsody of the Seas will make planned stops on its Southern Caribbean cruise in a different order, but no ports were canceled, according to a spokesperson for the line’s parent company, Royal Caribbean Group . The ship departed from San Juan on Sunday.

Icon of the Seas , which departed from Miami on Saturday, is sailing a Western Caribbean itinerary rather than an Eastern Caribbean cruise as planned. Stops include Cozumel, Costa Maya and Roatan.

Symphony of the Seas, which left from Bayonne, New Jersey , for an Eastern Caribbean cruise on Friday, will also visit Nassau rather than Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.

Compared with the Midwest, East Coast cities don’t offer the most affordable living, but they do provide access to top-notch health care, booming job markets and attractive amenities that make for a high quality of life. The East Coast also presents a variety of settings to choose from, whether you’re looking for a beach town, historical city, quiet inland town or metropolitan center.

Each East Coast city has different pros and cons you’ll need to weigh to determine what matters most to you. You may opt for a lower cost of living in Pennsylvania or a higher salary in the Northeast.

To help you determine the place in this part of the country that’s the best fit for you, we looked at the metro areas within 100 miles of the Atlantic coast that rank highest among the Best Places to Live , which considers factors including affordability, job market and desirability, among others.

The 25 Best Places to Live on the East Coast are:

25. York, Pennsylvania

One of the more inland cities on this list, York is a small city that provides an affordable option for residents who commute to Maryland. York is within an hour or so of Baltimore and less than 100 miles to the ocean, though closest to upper Chesapeake Bay. York itself provides a quieter setting, with its famous Central Market farmers market, breweries, live performances and a thriving arts scene. In the overall Best Places to Live rankings, York ranked 17th for net migration, growing its population by 3.34% between 2021 and 2022. The median home price of $106,688 is well below the national average of $281,900, but its median household income of $47,487 is also notably lower than the national median of $75,149.
