British Isles Cruise with Princess Cruises (Review) Experience

British Isles Cruise – The UK and Ireland are known for their beautiful landscapes that are picture-perfect. I recently went cruising with Princess Cruises onboard the MS Royal Princess on a British Isles cruise. I still consider myself a newbie to the world of cruising .

I will tell you one thing, it’s a different world travelling on the sea and Princess Cruises just gave me a wonderful experience for a first-time cruiser to make it more relaxed and fun!

I keep telling my friends from abroad that when they want to visit the UK that there is more to see and experience in the UK than just London. Another way of exploring the UK is through the sea on the best cruise lines with the best cruise ship packages onboard.

British Isles Cruise itinerary

Appreciating the beautiful landscape that is just on my doorstep is often something overlooked. I was invited by Princess Cruises to go onboard the Royal Princess around the British Isles.

I was super delighted with this offer and excited to experience everything first-hand. As a first-time cruiser, I had a mix of emotions and excitement not knowing what to expect. As I’m not familiar with the cruising drill yet! I find it so convenient to ease me into cruising because it is one of the popular cruises from UK .

We were also very lucky with the weather. The sun came out to greet us for the whole duration of our cruise. Yes, it was so sunny in Scotland!

English weather has its reputation for being erratic and miserable, however, during our cruise, it was a completely different story!  The sun was out and it was blissful sunny weather in each port of call.

During our British Isles cruise, I saw the rugged limestone cliffs that paint the picturesque beauty of the British landscape. Each port of call opens up another window to show us a glimpse of their heritage and culture.

Living in the UK for a decade and actively travelling around the country made me realise that there is more to see in the British Isles and it’s just on my doorstep.

Here are the ports of call for the British Isles cruise that I did with Princess Cruises. I joined the Royal Princess and embarked on my 6-day cruise from Dublin to Edinburgh .

  • Southampton (England)
  • Cork (Ireland)
  • Dublin (Ireland) — This is where I joined the cruise.
  • Belfast (Northern Ireland
  • Greenock (Scotland)
  • Inverness (Scotland)
  • Edinburgh (Scotland)

Here is the screenshot of my cruise personaliser where you can manage all the things you might need to enhance your cruise experiences like getting your drinks packages, shore excursions, spa appointments and Wi-fi.

Passenger Life onboard Royal Princess

The Balcony cabin where I stayed in Royal Princess exceeded my expectations and more.

My cabin was like a proper land-based hotel room. The cabin is spacious with a double bed, dressing table, cabinets, fridge, TV, shower and toilet. See more of the photos below:

The balcony is equipped with seats and a table and is just enough size for two people.  It was my favourite part of the cabin. The mattress is so comfortable and spacious. It definitely helped me sleep like a baby this bed certainly made me feel at home in my cabin.

For a first-time cruiser on this type of ship, the premium top-class quality of service that I received during my cruise with Princess Cruises really converted me to how I see cruising and life onboard.

Royal Princess is like a floating city and it’s more than just a hotel or merely a cruise ship!  I now understand why people see cruise ships as their second home. People on board from staff to your fellow passengers will make you feel at ease and relaxed. Everyone has cheerful vibes and smiles!

To construct Royal Princess it took:

  •   3 million man hours
  • 37,000 tons of steel More than 3 times the amount of steel in Los Angeles’ Disney Concert Hall
  • 4,000 km (2,484 miles) of electrical cable Enough to travel between the company’s offices near Los Angeles, Calif. and New York City
  • 360,000 liters (95,000 gallons) of paint More than twice what is reportedly used per year on the Golden Gate Bridge
  • 200 tons of marble More than 30 times the amount of marble in Michelangelo’s famous David statues.

There are 16 food outlets onboard that range from all-day dining, buffet, snacks bar and speciality restaurants. You will never be hungry onboard!

The delightful treats, food and drinks are just within your reach in every corner of the ship. Everything is made fresh on board by the skilled hands of the chefs that work tirelessly to deliver these yummy delectable delights onboard. All the main meals are included in the price of your cruise, and that is pretty much the majority of the restaurants onboard.

If you want to have a little fancy evening meal, you can then book a sumptuous dinner in any of the speciality restaurants onboard with an additional cover charge on top of your bill.

You can pre-book this in advance before your cruise, or book on the day of your embarkation. Book it as soon as possible, as they can get pretty full and busy.

steak in crown grill Royal Princess

I highly recommend the steakhouse onboard – Crown Grill . Oh, their steak is definitely the best I have ever had in my life! Food outlets onboard typically serve the most popular British food to give the passengers an extra taste of the British Isles.

On the beverage side, the bars onboard are particularly lively in the evening with the live band and the passengers are looking their best with their fancy frocks.

Drinks are overflowing with your favourite ale, fancy wine and refreshing cocktails and at the Sea View bar, you can also enjoy the talented bartenders with their cocktail-making flair show!

We were honoured to have the chance to visit the galley, where all the food magic happens.

Welcomed and escorted by the Executive Chef and Food and Beverage Manager of Royal Princess, they showed us around the galley and explained how the food preparation flows from the soup kitchen, pastry kitchen, main kitchen and up to the food service stations.

Galley Tour on Royal Princess

Everything works like clockwork and is meticulously planned months in advance and executed with precision from the sourcing of the fresh produce, preparation, cooking and serving of the food.

This is one of the great tours that we did onboard Royal Princess during our British Isles cruise.

Bridge Tour on Royal Princess with the Ship Officers

It was not my first time visiting the bridge of a ship, however, it was my first time checking out the bridge on a gigantic cruise ship like Royal Princess. The officers explained to us how they manoeuvre the ship and how to dock it. If you are into technical nautical stuff this is pretty interesting!

The ship uses a lot of very sophisticated radar technology to make sure the optimum safety and precision of everything onboard. The officers also briefed us on different cruise ship drills and procedures on how they run things on the cruise ship.

Royal Princess has:

  • A top speed of 23 knots Equal to 26.5 miles per hour
  • 15,000KW of transverse (sideways) thruster power The original Love Boat,  Pacific Princess  had a forward propulsion power of about 13,500KW. So Royal Princess can go faster sideways than that ship could travel forward.
  • An anchor that weighs 14 tons
  • The Sea Walk glass is 28mm (1.1 inches) thick More than 4 times thicker than the average car windshield glass

Entertainment and Shore Excursions

You can never run out of things to do on a cruise ship and onshore!

On-Board Entertainment

Royal Princess has a wide variety of onboard entertainment that will surely keep you engaged and entertained, whatever your interests or age might be!

At first, I was a bit sceptical about the activities onboard.  The silly naïve me thought that cruising can be boring and not for an outgoing type.  Well, I was wrong!

The ship is massive and still can’t believe that I can manage to clock in around 10,000 steps just by walking around the ship and checking out different venues of activities and entertainment.

I honestly can’t fathom how many events and activities were going on onboard, especially on a Sea Day where everyone is on board!

Live Theatre show on Princess threatre

In Royal Princess, the majority of the entertainment and activities can be found in the midship atrium area from Decks 5 to 7.

You can find the various activities and entertainment on board of Royal Princess here.

And if you fancy just staying in the comfort of your own cabin, the entertainment can be your great selection of films on your tv.  Wi-Fi is also available onboard, but it can be pricey, so use it wisely.

Shore Excursions

Everyone is looking forward to some great shore excursions when the cruise ship docks at a new port. It is one of the main activities when you go cruising unless you are a DIY person who prefers to do everything at your own pace and arrange it yourself.

Joining Shore excursions are fun and convenient and it can be arranged in advance or just head to the Shore Excursions desk. The group tours tend to be a bit cheaper than the private ones and of course, groups tend to go at a slower pace due to the volume of fellow passengers that are travelling with you during the excursions.

The private tours, on the other hand, are on the pricey side but you get what you pay for. The flexibility and convenience are definitely worth the price not to mention that you can also personalise your shore excursions if you have decided to go for a private tour (as long as you have enough time to do so).

Northern Ireland Shore Excursions on Royal Princess

During the British Isles cruise, all our shore excursions are on private tours so we managed to beat all the queues. So if you have the extra cash, I would recommend the private tours but it doesn’t mean that group tours would be less appealing as you will be visiting the same tour highlights.

If you want to hide and relax from it all, “The Sanctuary” on Deck 17 of Royal Princess is the best place to be.

The Sanctuary Rental Rates on Royal Princess

It’s like having your own private nook with a few fine touches. You can either have your own sunbed or even have your own private cabana for the whole duration of your cruise or for a day! Best of all, it’s only for adults.

The Sanctuary on Royal Princess

Just make sure to keep the noise down, relaxation is going on!

Royal Princess recreational facilities (gym, swimming pool, jogging track, lawn court and much more) are located on Decks 16 to 19 of the ship and the Lotus Spa is located on Deck 5 near the reception and shore excursion desks.

While onboard I tried a superb relaxing spa service from Lotus Spa, I opted for the 1-hour Bamboo Massage.

It was my first time trying the bamboo massage as I thought it was something different and I had never tried it before. I made a little research to make sure that I won’t be getting any surprises during the spa session.

On the day of our spa appointment, we filled out a standard assessment form and then chilled out in the waiting lounge while waiting for our therapist.

The Lotus Spa has its own bathrobes, towels and locker room so if you have to change your clothing or use your own bathrobes, that is perfectly fine. The spa treatment can be summed up in a few words, it is so relaxing and wonderful!

I must say that it is one of my most awaited onboard experiences.  I love being pampered and of course, while onboard will be the best time to do it, maybe during a sea day, just like ours.

Typically, my back gets so tender after a massage but thank goodness for the anti-inflammatory gel that they put on my back after the session, it does make a big difference.  No aching and tenderness for me! I’m such a happy girl after my massage session.

Our pampering session didn’t stop there, we also tried “The Enclave”, a thermal suite after our treatment.   It has some neat heated and water beds, a sauna, hammam, thermal pool and sensory showers.

It’s a great place to wind down after the relaxing spa treatment at the Lotus Spa.

Looks like an interesting itinerary and ship. Although I’ve sailed on several different cruise lines, I’ve not yet been on Princess. Bridge tours are definitely fascinating; on Celebrity Eclipse, they showed us how there’s a glass floor on the wing of the bridge to help them check things out when berthing. I’m not surprised at all with your step count; despite all the great food onboard, I always seem to come home lighter – probably due to mainly sailing big ships, the gym, and plenty of walking ashore.

Yes, it was a great cruise around the British Isles. Surprisingly we had plenty of sunshine as well. It was totally exciting to visiting the bridge and getting new maritime knowledge from the officers.

A great experience you had there! 🙂 I’ve never been on any cruise in my life, yet. Love how you makes your writing interesting. But the Wi-Fi charges are quite expensive, or those are standard charges on cruises?

Yes, the wifi onboard are pretty reasonable compared to the hefty maritime internet.

Cruises are not my type of vacations, I get seasick almost instantly and it makes the whole trip a nightmare. 🙁

Oh dear! So sorry for you. Have you tried taking some seasick tabs they are pretty effective.

Cruises are not my type of vacation since I get seasick almost instantly. The spa section looks great!

I have never been on a cruise (I think, if a high school trip on a boat to Greece doesn’t count as a cruise), and I am not a fan- but the circle you did goes around all the regions I want to visit! Especially Scotland in the sunny weather (and I don’t know why everyone accuses British weather to be miserable, I’ve been to England twice in October, and the weather was pretty nice actually!). Also, didn’t know that the maritime Internet was so expensive, which is maybe a good thing, to completely switch off during your 6 days of cruising.

Oh! You should try it once. It’s a great fun. The British weather is very temperamental, but we were so lucky to have a glorious weather on this cruise.

It sounds like you had a fabulous cruise. Imagine Scotland being sunny! I spent 18 months in the UK and can practically count the number of sunny days on both hands haha. I have never been on a cruise before but this looks like a perfect one, docking at some beautiful places. I also like how you included lots of facts throughout your post. It made it really interesting to read.

This itinerary looks amazing. It literally hits every spot! I’ve only been to London so far (simply because of time restraints every time) but would LOVE to see more (especially the Channel Islands). Definitely adding this to my bucket list. P.S. I originally hail from Ryazan! How did you end up with this name??

I have never been on a cruise but it is something that I have always wanted to try at least once. Royal Princess and Princess Cruises sounds ideally to me. I could definitely do the British Isles and go through the English Channel. I also love the idea of the different drink packages that they have available.

We’re not fans of cruises because we prefer to be on land than on water, but I must say that the itinerary seems interesting! Also I’m surprised to see how large the rooms are on the Royal Princess!

I’ve never really considered the British Isles as a place for a cruise, but that itinerary really peaked my interest! And you’re so lucky you got some sunny days out there. Your balcony room looked so lovely and comfy – between that and the spa it seems like you could be content even if you weren’t blessed with such great weather! I’m not big on cruises, but I do definitely prefer the DIY route for onshore excursions, what about you? What was your favorite stop on the itinerary?

Sounds like a wonderful trip and a unique way to see the British Isles. No better way than on the ship that’s godmother is the duchess, herself. I have not cruised before, but these pictures makes me wan to change that. It looks like a luxury hotel.

Looks like a wonderful trip ; and no better way to see the British Isles than on the ship whose godmother is the duchess herself. I have not cruised before, but this makes me want to. It looks like a luxury hotel.

WHAT TIME OF YEAR DID YOU CRUISE?

Hi Debra, We cruised the British Isles around May. 🙂

Southampton is a port city on England’s south coast. It’s home to the SeaCity Museum, with an interactive model of the Titanic, which departed from Southampton in 1912. Nearby, Southampton City Art Gallery specialises in modern British art. Solent Sky Museum features vintage aircraft like the iconic Spitfire. Tudor House & Garden displays artifacts covering over 800 years of history, including a penny-farthing bike.

Queenstown it was for some decades before reverting to its old Irish name in 1922 - the Cobh (cove) of Cork. Is there anywhere in Ireland more full of poignant memories than this embarkation point for America? From here hundreds of thousands of mostly hungry and penniless Irish men and women left to build a new life, especially in the Famine years of 1844-48. Many thrived and prospered, but many died on the journey in the terrible travelling conditions of the time. It is a pleasant town; its streets climb the steep slope of a hill, the top of which is crowned by the very fine St. Coleman's Cathedral which has a carillon of 47 bells. Cobh is situated on Great Island, one of the three large islands in Cork harbour which are all now joined by roads and bridges - Little Island and Fota are the others. The harbour is one of the largest and safest anywhere, being capable of taking the largest vessels afloat. The great Transatlantic liners used to come in up to the 1950s. On the quayside there is a memorial to the victims of the Lusitania, many of whom are buried in the old church cemetery. The ship was sunk off Kinsale in 1915 by a German submarine, an action which was responsible for bringing the United States of America into the Great War, the survivors were brought back here. Another unhappy association is with the Titanic, 'the safest liner in the world'. Queenstown was her last port of call on her fateful maiden voyage. The Queenstown Story is based in the disused portions of the railway station at Cobh. This highly imaginative visitor attraction tells the story of emigration from Cobh in the period of the famine in 1845 up to the era of the great Liners in the 1950s. The historical role which Cobh harbour has played as a port is also illustrated. At Cobh, one looks over Haulbowline and Spike Islands, formerly the base of the Irish Naval Service. To the east, Cork Harbour leads to East Ferry. Roches Point can be seen to the south. To the south west is the yachting centre of Crosshaven.

Dublin is the capital of Ireland, Irish culture and cuisine. The regional and micro breweries that once flourished, although crowded out of business for the last hundred or so years by Guiness, more for its marketing and transportation triumphs than necessarily for qualitative reasons, are coming back to add local color and variety to the famous old Irish pubs. Ireland has produced some of the world’s greatest writers, and in its traditional folk ballads and rich melodies you can hear the unique elements which form the roots of modern rhythm and blues music.

Belfast offers the buzz and vibrancy of a capital city whilst being a gateway to the rural retreat of Northern Ireland. At the head of Belfast Lough, the city is compact and easy to get around, whether by car or on foot. Like all capital cities, Belfast offers a wide range of accommodation to suit all pockets, from cosy B&Bs around the university, to well appointed riverside self-catering establishments, to city centre boutique hotels. Belfast is teeming with a multitude of stylish bars, gourmet restaurants, trendy clubs and some of the best shopping in the UK. Visitors can enjoy traditional Irish music in a local pub or dance the night away to the latest vibes – the choice is yours! The birthplace of the Titanic, Belfast’s industrial heritage has shaped a city steeped in culture, portrayed at its best at the Ulster Museum, City Hall, the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum and the many buildings still standing. The many parks, gardens and galleries offer a perfect haven to relax. Within a couple of hours of Belfast, visitors can marvel at the Giant’s Causeway, walk the Mountains of Mourne, fish in Fermanagh or visit the many picturesque villages in Northern Ireland - a perfect location to discover the rest of Northern Ireland!

The largest and main settlement in the area is Greenock. Traditionally dependent on heavy industry and manufacturing relating to the shipping trade, Greenock is now one of the largest centres for high technology and modern communications media in Europe. IBM, National Semiconductor, Amazon and T-Mobile One all have their UK or European bases in Greenock. Continued redevelopment of obsolete industrial land has resulted in a comfortable blend of Leisure and Retail services occupying the waterfront area. Greenock has excellent transport links, Clyde Port Authority operate one of the largest container terminals in Scotland which doubles as a busy Cruise ship terminal. The road links provide easy access to Glasgow International Airport (20 mins), Prestwick International Airport (45 mins), the main Caledonian McBrayne Ferry terminal in Gourock and regular freight and passenger Rail transport to Paisley (30 mins) and Glasgow (40mins).

As the main town in Orkney, Kirkwall (ON Kirkjuvagr - Church Bay) makes a good starting point for a visit to the islands. It is first mentioned in the sagas as the dwelling place of Earl Rognvald Brusison about 1035, who built a church dedicated to King Olav of Norway there. The town developed around the Cathedral, and became the administrative and commercial centre, with its access to the North Isles, central position and sheltered harbour in the then much bigger Peedie Sea. Today the winding main Street still follows the shape of the original settlement, and many of the fine old houses with end-on gables date from the 16th to 18th centuries. Narrow lanes run off the Street which has many attractive shops. At Broad Street it opens into the expanse of the grass-covered Kirk Green in front of St Magnus Cathedral. The attractive harbour front is the scene of much activity with ferries and fishing boats. Over the last 200 years the pier has greatly expanded, but the Harbour Basin still retains much of its charm. The Orkney Museum is housed in Tankerness House, parts of which date from the 15th century. This museum is a good starting point from which to gain an insight into Orkney’s rich past. The Tankerness Gardens behind the museum make a pleasant place for a seat on a nice day. St Magnus Cathedral is across the road, and makes an excellent finale to a visit, with its peaceful interior. The nearby Bishop’s and Earl’s Palaces date from Norse and Scottish times. Wideford Hill, just to the west of Kirkwall is situated on the Old Finstown Road. It can be reached by footpath and by road. From the summit most of the North and South Isles, East and West Mainland and Scapa Flow can be seen. Kirkwall is an excellent place to seek out interesting souvenirs or presents, with its wide variety of quality shops stocking knitwear, Orkney jewellery and crafts, local books, as well as many other home-produced items. In addition there is a good selection of Orkney food and drink products such as Highland Park Whisky, Orkney Herring, Orkney Cheese, smoked fish of various kinds and of course the famous Orkney Beef. The Highland Park Visitor Centre on the edge of the town offers visits to the distillery and an excellent audiovisual introduction to Orkney and the making of Highland Park, as well as an enchanting shop which stocks many interesting items.

Invergordon

british isles cruise with princess

Invergordon is a town whose history stretches back through two World Wars and has now developed into a centre for oilrig refurbishment and maintenance. It is also a major port of call for cruise liners, being the only deep water port in the area, 40 liners, with 21,000 visitors from all over the world, berthed in 2004. Ideally situated in the centre of the eastern Highlands, the town's High Street has recently been given a face lift with coloured granite blocks, speed controllers, a new restaurant and a mural has been painted on the Albyn Housing building. There are many places to eat, providing quick take-away food right through to a quality country house hotel and restaurant just inland from the town, Indian and Chinese food is also available as an alternative to the more traditional fayre. There is an Arts Centre, a Leisure and Sports Club, with swimming pool and an 18 hole golf course on the outskirts of town.

Queensferry

british isles cruise with princess

South Queensferry is situated 8 miles west of Edinburgh, on the banks of the Forth Estuary. Its name is thought to have originated from the frequent journeys made by Queen Margaret of Scotland from Dunfermline, in Fife, south to over the estuary towards Edinburgh, in the late 11th century. The burgh prospered and was a leading seaport in the 16th century, as well as being the southern ferry port for the crossings to and from Fife. The town expanded even more in the 1880s during the construction of the Forth Rail Bridge, with its workforce of around 3000.The Navy established a base at the adjacent Port Edgar during the 1st World war. The other famous Forth Bridge, the Road Bridge, was constructed during the 1960s. The central part of the town is still quite old fashioned and retained much of its charm as a protected area. At the western end of the Main Street stands the Jubilee Tower, to comemmorate the 50th year of Queen Victoria's reign. The Hawes Inn lies at the other end of the main street. The Inn has quite a literary heritage. The Scottish novelist, Walter Scott, described the inn in "Antiquary" and Robert Louis Stevenson, another Scottish author, is said to have found the inspiration for his novel "Kidnapped" while a guest at the inn. There is also a 200 year old yew tree in the garden of the inn. South Queensferry is pleasant to visit for a stroll along the main street and to admire the spectacular views of the bridges. In the Summer months tourists can take a ferry to the nearby Inchcolm Island. The town has a good selection of coffee shops and restuarants, several with good views. It can be reached by train from Edinburgh in a few minutes and is around a half hour drive from my home town of Stirling.

The Pros And Cons Of Exploring The British Isles On A Cruise

british isles cruise with princess

  • Cruises and Sailing
  • Destinations
  • Types of Travel
  • United Kingdom

The British Isles aren’t the first place you think of when planning a cruise but, although there are a few reasons why this is the case, there are also lots of reasons why cruising around the British Isles is a great idea. The UK and its islands have some of the most diverse scenery and the most varied coastlines you’ll ever see, and what better way to experience it than from the sea and the waterways? If you’re new to the UK, this is a great way to get an overview of the landscape. If you already live here, it’s the perfect way to see your own country through an entirely new lens. As with anything, there’s good and bad to be said about this. Here’s my take on the pros and cons of cruising around the British Isles.

Sunset at Ynys Llanddwyn island on the coast of Anglesey in North Wales with the mountains of Snowdonia in the distance.

Pro: Experience The UK Coastline From A Whole New Perspective

With its stunning headlands, bays, peninsulas, and islands, the UK has a whole world of varied views and experiences to enjoy. You won’t find a better way to take in more of this stunning scenery than from the water, and even if you know the UK well, you’ll never see it quite like this. On a cruise, you’ll experience the UK and its islands from outside of it, rather than from being within it, and the perspective this gives you on a country is unique. The rugged cliffs, the sandy beaches, the harbors and ports, will all give you a view of island life you haven’t witnessed before. This makes cruising around the UK an entirely different kind of trip, and a new experience.

Gold Hill Shaftesbury Dorset, in the snow.

Con: British Weather Is Unpredictable

There’s no doubt that the British weather can be an issue. Everyone knows Brits go on about the weather a lot, but that’s because it alters so much. The changeable nature of it makes it difficult to know what to pack and you can end up taking something for every season. It’s certainly not simple and you might end up with bulging luggage. Fortunately, there are no luggage restrictions on a cruise so you can pack as much as you need to cover clothing for all eventualities. There are also lots of indoor activities to take part in on a cruise ship if the weather isn’t great while traveling between destinations; a spa treatment, taking part in a Zumba class, a wine tasting session, or hitting the casino. You’re likely to catch some rain on deck, but you can still have fun below.

Pro: Spotting Coastal Wildlife

The coastal seas of the UK attract some wonderful marine life. You can look out for Minke whales off the West Coast of Scotland and over the Irish Sea, and bottlenose dolphins near Land’s End in Cornwall. Or you can spot Harbor porpoise near the North Coast of Wales . Gray seals are also common around UK waters. On the Cornish Coast, you may even be lucky enough to see a basking shark. The UK also has a rich seabird population, affording you the opportunity to view birds you wouldn’t normally get the chance to see. Cruise ships put you right in the middle of the action and give you a much better chance of spotting something unusual. The balcony rooms on Princess Cruises give you the perfect place to keep watch from.

Pro: UK Cruises Are Often Specialist And Themed

You’ll find that cruise ships journeying the British Isles are offering something a little bit different. For example, Ambassador Cruises is running a special Jubilee Cruise in honor of the Queen’s Jubilee this year. This gives you the chance to experience something you’ll never again get the chance to experience, making it completely unique. Guests get to be part of a specially-designed itinerary in celebration of the Queen’s 70th year on the throne. Those onboard the ship, Ambience , will not only enjoy a range of destinations, but will also be joined by royal historians Dicky Arbiter and Penny Junor, who will be mingling and sharing stories about the Queen with first-hand accounts of what she is like.

Con: Specialist Cruises Are Often Not Repeated

With the Queen only celebrating her Platinum Jubilee once, this will be the only time to join this cruise. You have one opportunity only to enjoy the story of her reign and the country she is the queen of, in this unusual way. This particular cruise sets sail in May of this year. And it won’t happen again. This is great if you manage to book a place — you’ll experience something totally unique — but if you don’t, you’ve missed it forever. There’s something to be said for cruise ships that offer a uniform experience, you always know what you’re getting so you know what to expect and you won’t miss out. On the other hand, one-off trips that can’t be replicated have their own charm and give you something you won’t forget.

Birmingham Canals, Wolverhampton, England.

Pro: The Waterways Are Quiet

Cruising on the UK Coastline definitely beats being stuck in a traffic jam on the motorway. If you’re exploring the UK by road, you’ll soon find out how busy it gets, how frustrating it can be being stuck in jams, and how inconvenient it can be having to find motorway services. Even trains can be busy, delayed, and sometimes not running at all. On a cruise ship, you won’t have any of those concerns. From the moment you board, everything is right there at your disposal, and you don’t have to worry about where to eat, where the facilities can be found, and whether your transport is running on time. Your ship is your transport, your hotel, your restaurants, and your entertainment, all in one. And you can do it all in peace and calm. Especially in the UK, you’ll find cruising is quiet and less busy than any other form of transportation.

Medieval fortress Dunvegan Castle (Isle of Skye, Scotland).

Pro: UK Cruises Can Go Where Liners Can’t Go

Specialized and local cruises, like the ones run by Hebridean Adventures , take place on a small converted fishing boat. Cruising on a boat like the MV Monadhliath means you can visit remote and quiet sea lochs that are miles from any roads, and also where larger ships cannot enter. Because UK cruises aren’t traveling through large portions of the ocean, you get to see the tucked away bits of the coastline and you can cruise into waterways and lakes. I recommend taking along a copy of Amelia Dalton’s book, Mistress and Commander , her story of how she converted an Arctic fishing boat and ran cruises around the remote Scottish Islands. If you want an adventure, a Hebridean cruise is the perfect way to experience the seas and islands.

Con: You Won’t Get Sandy Beaches And Sunbathing

If you like cruising, but you usually take cruises around the Caribbean or the Mediterranean , this one will be a little different. If you love sunbathing on deck and dipping in the pool while the sun beats down above you, be prepared, you won’t get that on a UK cruise. Well, you might, as the weather is unpredictable, but by no means guaranteed. However, if you think you’ll miss out on sandy beaches altogether, you’d be wrong. Some itineraries visit Scotland’s most pristine and largely empty, sandy beaches complete with sand dunes and turquoise water. And the Channel Islands like Guernsey certainly offer stunning beaches and, quite often, sunny weather.

The River Cruise boat Windsor Royal cruising along the Thames past Barry Avenue.

Pro: It’s A More Intimate Experience

Cruise ships traveling around the British Isles and river cruise boats in particular, are smaller than regular cruise ships, so cruising feels more intimate. English Holiday Cruises take passengers along some of Britain’s most beautiful waterways where life runs at a slower pace. While they do have the largest boat hotel in the UK, The Edward Elgar, even this one is small and cozy. It has just 11 cabins, so you can really get to know the other guests onboard if you want to. It’s a bit like a floating boutique hotel, with a generous dining room and a compact little bar. If you like the idea of cruising, but also like your getaways to be quiet, this could be the perfect choice.

Con: It’s Not Foreign Travel

It really depends what you’re looking for from your cruise and from your trip, but it has to be said that cruising the British Isles isn’t exactly exotic. As mentioned before, the sun and cocktails on the beach might be in short supply and if you want a “foreign” holiday, this might not be what you’re looking for. However, cruising the British Isles will introduce you to places in the UK and its islands that you wouldn’t normally see. If you’re traveling to the UK from another country for a vacation and taking the cruise while you’re here, you’ll get to see a lot more of the country than you would by staying in one place.

The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary

Looking to get away? There’s no doubt a cruise holiday can be the perfect way to escape from the stresses of the office. Life at sea is already relaxing, but those who want total peace and quiet will enjoy what The Sanctuary has to offer.

The Sanctuary is a quiet, outdoor spot for you to escape to when you simply want to relax and ignore everything else for a little while. This area of the ship is all about health and wellness in a completely stress-free setting. It’s also adults-only, which only adds to the tranquil experience.

You’ll be able to enjoy the very best that the “Serenity Stewards” have to offer. The Serenity Stewards are expert staff on hand to attend to your every need. Whether it’s a refreshing bottle of Evian water or a chilled face towel, a steward will be able to provide it for you.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to services offered at The Sanctuary. Both singles and couples can enjoy a wide variety of massages in a private cabana setting, with offerings including Deep Tissue and Swedish massages.

This is also the perfect place to grab a light snack or healthy beverage, as this area of the ship features a full menu of tasty treats for passengers to take advantage of.

Lotus Spa

Above all, a cruise holiday should be about relaxing – and what better way to do that than in a fully-stocked spa?

The onboard Lotus Spa features a wide range of treatments designed to send travellers to a world of relaxation and harmony. The spa operates on an “a la carte” model, where each service can be booked separately. However, passengers can also opt to schedule a full day of service for themselves if they so desire.

One treatment that every passenger should consider trying is acupuncture. Most cruises in the fleet employ trained acupuncturists who are specialists in the art of locating the body’s pressure points. The system works by poking sterilised needles into these key areas, which in turn release pent up energy and reduce pain.

For something a little more traditional, how about a La Therapie HydraLift Facial? This treatment rejuvenates and refreshes the skin. There’s no better way to look your best for all the pictures you’re sure to be taking while onboard the ship.

Some passengers might instead be in search of a nice massage. The Lotus Spa enhances the massage with its Aroma Stone Therapy programme. By using the heat of the stones in combination with the enticing smells, this treatment relaxes the passenger while simultaneously releasing the stress and tension built up in the muscles.

Fitness Centre

Fitness Centre

The fitness centre offer a wide range of invigorating classes, including such popular options as cycling, Pilates, yoga, stretch, and abs classes. Among the more popular options are TRX Suspension Training- a revolutionary method of functional training using a suspension trainer and bodyweight exercises that originated with the U.S. Navy SEALS – and Body Sculpt Boot Camp, which is designed to be completed with only 1 dumbbell making the continuity from cruise to home easy. Body Sculpt participants can expect to burn up to 700 calories in the 40 minute class, and each receives a take-home poster/programme which outlines all the exercises and breaks the programme up into four manageable workouts.

Other advanced options available on many ships include one-on-one training and body composition analysis. The fitness centre also offers a range of complimentary classes and seminars including Detox for Health & Weight Loss and Relieving Back Pain and Improving Posture with Good Feet.

Lawn Court

A putting green, bocce ball and croquet area available on the top deck.

Princess Sports Central

Princess Sports Central

The multi-sport area on decks 18 and 19 is designed to offer a collection of fun options, including court games, lawn activities and even a lounge for virtual gaming. The Centre Court can be used for basketball, tennis, volleyball and badminton, while baseball fans can even practice their swing at the portable batting cage. Golfers will find a driving range facility, while the simulated laser shooting range offers a new onboard activity. The Game Lounge will offer a comfortable space to meet up for games, including table tennis and virtual gaming with Kinect systems.

The double-lane jogging track features separate paths for runners and walkers. In addition, a circuit programme with unique outdoor exercise stations makes it the perfect place for guests who want to burn a few extra calories or work on strength moves al fresco. This modern outdoor fitness equipment will offer a new option for those who wish to work out on deck and enjoy the sea air. The track area will be decorated with art picturing iconic global travel destinations, giving guests the opportunity to “run around the world.”

Freshwater Pools and Hot Tubs

Freshwater Pools and Hot Tubs

Take a dip in our sparkling freshwater pools and leave your everyday world behind. If passing through as part of a cruise, be sure to head straight for the so-called Golden Mile, which runs from Belfast City Hall to Queen's University, and is where you'll find the majority of the city's historic attractions as well as its best bars, restaurants and cafes.

Day 5 Greenock, Scotland

Greenock, formerly a burgh in the historic county of Renfrewshire, is a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area in Scotland, United Kingdom. Along with Gourock to the west and Port Glasgow to the east, it makes up a continuous urban area. Glasgow is Scotland's largest city and is renowned for its culture, style and the friendliness of its people. It's also famed for its Victorian and art nouveau architecture, a rich legacy of the city's 18th-20th-century prosperity due to trade and shipbuilding. Greenock is industrial town and port, hemmed in by hills. Main town attractions are: Town Hall, Custom House, churches, Sheriff Court, various mansions and the Watt Monument Library. Underheugh Cottage, is a working smallholding that is completely self-reliant. The owners organize various activities such as pig-keeping lessons, nature walks, gardening courses and the opportunity to dress up like an ancient Scottish.

Day 6 Greenock, Scotland

Day 7 kirkwall, scotland.

Kirkwall is the largest town and capital of the Orkney Islands of Scotland. The town has two museums, the larger being Tankerness House Museum, which contains items of local historical interest within one of Scotland's best-preserved sixteenth-century town-houses. At the heart of the town stands St. Magnus Cathedral, which was founded in memory of Saint Magnus Erlendsson, Earl of Orkney 1108-1117 by Earl (later Saint) Rognvald Kali.

Day 8 Invergordon, Scotland

Invergordon is a town and port in Easter Ross, in Ross and Cromarty, Highland, Scotland. Take a short walk into the town center and you'll find impressive murals, overflowing flowerboxes, small shops, cafes, banks, and friendly people happy to have a wee chat. Included in the attractions are Cawdor Castle, Dunrobin Castle, Brodie Castle, Loch Ness and its famous monster "Nessie", Fort George,Dornoch Cathedral, Culloden Battlefield, Falls of Shin Inverewe Gardens.

Day 9 Edinburgh, Scotland

The harbor is an excellent starting place for excursions to the city's Old Town, as well as to the medieval castle and other historic landmarks in the area. The Old Town, which was constructed during the Middle Ages when there was a continual fear of assault, huddles high on the Castle Rock with a view over the surrounding plain below. On the other hand, the New Town is comprised of a breathtakingly beautiful series of streets, crescents, and terraces.

Day 10 At Sea, At Sea

Wonderful day at Sea.

Day 11 Le Havre, France

Le Havre is a love letter to modernism, evoking, more than any other French city, France's postwar energy and optimism. Numerous museums and galleries provide cultural interest, and in summer, there are several beaches for the sun-seekers.

Day 12 Southampton, England

Sail with Princess Cruises from Southampton to British Isles on board Emerald Princess cruise ship. Discover the best of England, Guernsey, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, France on this British Isles cruise and discover amazing Southampton, St. Peter Port, Cork, Dublin, Belfast, Greenock, Greenock, Kirkwall, Invergordon, Edinburgh, Le Havre, Southampton. Emerald Princess leaving Southampton, England for 12 days from July 31, 2023.

We did the British Isles cruise on the Emerald Princes in 2022 and it still ranks as one of our top 5 cruises in my estimation. They are port intensive, so you need to be prepared for an energetic vacation as there is so much to see and do and each destination. Here is an itinerary of what we did on our 4 day stay pre-cruise in London, and then at each port on our cruise:

London: Buckingham Palace

              Westminster Abbey

              Tower of London

              Churchill War Rooms

              Shakespeare's Old Globe Theatre

              St. Paul's Cathedral

              Maritime Museum at Greenwich

Southampton Departure - transfer and tour vis International Friends:  Windsor Castle

Guernsey - Private Tour: Castle Cornet

                                        WWII Sites and Museum

Cobh - Princess Tour: Rock of Cashel

Dublin - Princess Tour: Glendalough Monastic City

                                     Christchurch Cathedral

Belfast - Odyssey Tours: Giants Causeway

                                        Dunluce Castle

                                        Titanic Museum

Liverpool - Wales Tour via Busy Bus: Conwy Castle

                                                           Snowdonia Park

                                                            Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

Invergordon - Private Tour: Dunrobin Castle

                                            Cairn Liath

                                            Falls of Shin

                                            Dornoch Cathedral

Glasgow - Discover Scotland: Sterling Castle

                                                Doune Castle

                                                Village of Luss

                                                Loch Lomond

                                                Trossachs National Park

Edinburgh - used local taxi: Edinburgh Castle

                                            Royal Mile

                                            St. Giles Cathedral

                                            Royal Yacht Brittania

Le Havre - Normandy via Overlord Tours: Omaha Beach

                                                                   American Cemetery

                                                                   Honfleur

Southampton Departure - transfer and tour via EC Minibus:  Stonehenge

It was a busy and action packed cruise vacation, but one I highly recommend!

I love looking at this forum that is all about cruising the British Isles.  Although it is not Princess specific, it is a great source of information!

Sept on the Regal (12 Day with Bruges)  It was Fantastic!

Port intensive so if you are flying in, best to pad it a day to get over jet lag before the cruise starts.

In 2014, we did an around the British Isles cruise on the Ruby and it was one of our favorite cruises. (We loved it so much that we've talked about doing it again.) We went early and stayed in London for several days to see all the sights there and were really glad that we did--so much to see there!

We did privately-arranged tours, rather than Princess ones. In some cases, (like Liverpool and Guernsey), we simply disembarked and walked around. For Cobh, we took a tour (with E-Bus, I think) to Blarney Castle (though we weren't interested in kissing the stone and just walked around the very scenic castle grounds), Charles Fort, Kinsale, and St. Colman's Cathedral).   In Dublin, we shared a taxi with some other cruisers to Trinity College to see the Book of Kells. From there, we were able to catch the HOHO bus to go around town (with stops like the Guinness Storehouse, of course!), then caught a taxi at Trinity College to return to the ship. We also did the Odyssey Tours trip from Belfast to Giants Causeway (and the other things mentioned in the post from karatemom2), as well as the same Discover Scotland tour from Glasgow. We did a WowScotland tour to Inverness, Loch Ness, Culloden Battlefield, Clava Cairns, and Cawdor Castle  (a really good tour!). At South Queensferry pier for Edinburgh, we took the train into town (following directions I found here on CruiseCritic) and then walked to the castle and around town.  From the LeHavre port, we had an amazing small group tour  of the Normandy battlefield beaches, the cemeteries, etc. with Bayeaux Shuttles. (if possible, watch the original "The Longest Day" movie before going here.)

We had been talking about doing a British Isles cruise for years before COVID hit, but never did because they were so expensive as compared to other European cruises. We did the Med a few times, the Baltic, the Adriatic, the Holy Land, Hawaii, even Australia/New Zealand... all cheaper than British Isles.

COVID completely changed our outlook (not being able to cruise for 2+ years). When we saw the British Isles cruises on the Regal for summer 2024, we went ahead and booked. We are on the June 7 cruise out of Southampton. I have been buried in planning for it the past couple of weeks and I think that we have come up with an amazing touring itinerary for pre-cruise, each port, and post-cruise. I am so excited for this trip! I know that it is something I will remember forever.

So tl;dr is: do it! Seize the moment! You never know if this opportunity will be available again and it is a great cruising destination.

We were on the Emerald in May 2022 for this itinerary. One word can't sum it up but here is one: FABULOUS!!!

Our tours were amazing as other posters have said. We did many of those as well. We would love to go again, but we would not go on the Emerald. I think the Regal is doing this now and we love the Regal.

We had the good fortune to do our British Isles cruise on the former Ocean Princess. Such a sweet experience sailing on a ship whose listed capacity was IIRC 670.

We did the British Isles cruise and it was one of the best cruises and I've done more than 50.  If you book it, go in August and attend the Edinburgh Tattoo out of Glasgow.  It is spectacular!

We went on a very similar cruise, although ours also included Cork.  And we agree, it was wonderful!  I would say it was our second favourite (after Alaska), but we've only done eight cruises.  The only disappointment was that we couldn't dock at Invergordon due to rough seas. I'd say Edinburgh was the highlight--it's a breathtaking city. It was closely followed by Cork, where we hired a very entertaining private guide.  (He recommended that we skip the Blarney Stone because we would fight crowds of tourists, and we didn't feel deprived.).  The only missable stop was Le Havre.  Not much to see or do there.

This will sound strange, but there were almost too many ports. We stopped in a different port every day, and it got to be a little exhausting.  Of course, we didn't want to miss any of the destinations, but we are accustomed to have sea days throughout a cruise to relax and recharge.

Hello again. We did this cruise as well and the Emerald was fine by us, but I would also do a Royal class ship in preference.

To the OP @devolve I highly recommend for your stop in Liverpool, do a Lakes District tour. That was one of our best days. Our cruise went to the Orkney Islands as, from memory, they exchanged that stop with Glasgow. Edinburgh was a great stop. We did a ship tour to Paris from Le Havre and thought it was a waste of time as the drive to Paris was about 2 hours and we only had time to the see the sights from a wet bus window. We are doing another cruise from Southampton later in the year and will stop at Paris on the way for a few days an then train it to London. I was going to suggest London activities but just noticed you are from the UK so I'm guessing you don't need any help.

We are also from the UK and we’ve booked the Regal Princess for this Summer. We have always headed for the sun (other than Alaska) and have been to some of the ports on this itinerary, just not on a cruise. It will be great to see it all from a different perspective.

These are great trips, good ports with  interesting tour options.

We live here and will do them every year when the prices drop to sensible levels. Last year NCL undercut Princess so we did them,  year before it was Princess but that was when Plus was £30pppd, now at £50 the base fares need to drop a lot(under £50pppd)

The basic fare for us with BLC saving would be around £83 pppd for a cat BB balcony without Princess plus.

nymshowdown

Highly recommend it. Second favorite cruise I've done behind Alaska. As many have said, port intensive, but it's a good mix of some really great stops and some that are a bit more laid back.

What I loved most was that many of those ports weren't like the typical Mediterranean stops. Coach rides to the cities/highlights were much shorter. The cities, while beautiful, have less to try and cram in with limited time than say a Florence or Rome. Finally, you'll find much less crowding in ports and more tolerable weather compared to a Med cruise. Really makes each stop more enjoyable and less exhausting by the end of the day.

Would love to hear what you've planned for each port itinerary.  We leave on the same trip May 3rd and need to get things pinned down and like to book more local, smaller tours than Princess.  Thanks!

Has anyone booked the saver fare, we have not cruised with Princess for a long time, how does she compare to Cunard.

Okay, here's what I have (note that our itinerary may differ from yours):

Portland - Walk/blue shuttle to Portland Castle, visit D-Day Center, walk/taxi to Tout Quarry Sculpture Park. (Note, most people will be going to Stonehenge or Bath, but we have been to those sites before. I strongly recommend visiting Stonehenge on your own before/after the cruise (easy to reach if you are driving to/from London) as it will be cheaper and easier than taking an expensive tour from port.

Cobh - Private tour to Blarney Castle and Cork

Dublin - Taking DART to Dublin, then HOHO Bus to get around and see sights

Glasgow - Taking train to Glasgow, then HOHO Bus to get around and see sights

Kirkwall - Private tour to see Skara Brae and Maeshowe (Maeshowe not available on big tours)

Invergordon - Private tour to Lochness and Inverness

Edinburgh - Taking train to Edinburgh, then walking between sights

Le Havre - Walking along beach, visiting Maison de l'Armateur, catching Bee Bus to Honfleur (Most people will be visiting Paris, Mont St. Michel and the Normandy Beaches, which we have see many times before, so we wanted something new. I highly recommend Mont St. Michel or the Normandy Beaches via private tour/rental car if you have never been.)

NOTE I do NOT recommend visiting Paris from Le Havre. It's a long journey and you won't see much in the limited time you are there. Instead, it is worthwhile to fly into/out of Paris before/after your cruise and take a few days to see it on your own. You can then take the train to London. If you're sailing out of Dover, you can also take a ferry from Le Havre to Dover (and vice versa).

Or to Mt Saint Michel. If you can stand a 3hr bus ride both ways with 1 stop, it's a beautiful place. Unfortunately we got the "I'm French, so I don't need to be politically correct" tour guide. Thankfully I had cell reception and watched You Tube videos for the ride back 😀

We did Mont St. Michel from Le Havre once using a rental car. Since the ship gets into port very early and stays late (to accommodate the busses that go to Paris) it was very doable.

I DO recommend visiting Paris from Le Havre.  We did it on our BI cruise.  Drove by the Arc de Triomphe, went to the Louvre, had lunch in the Eiffel Tower, and drove along the Champs Elysee.  Wish I could have had more time there but I didn't and probably won't be back although one never knows.

Everyone should do a British Isles cruise on Princess.  We loved ours in August of 2023.  We had fabulous weather to boot.  What a great way to sample Scotland and Ireland.  Once my husband retires this summer, we plan on heading back to Scotland ourselves now that we have gotten a snippet.

The train is an option, but the X99 Cruiselik service ( https://www.lothianbuses.com/cruiselink-x99/ ) takes you into the city centre from the end of Hawes Pier - where the yellow traffic cones are on the left of this picture ( https://maps.app.goo.gl/5eaPB687Tfzcakm3A ) - rather than having to walk up the half-mile path to the rail station at bridge-deck level.

Last year, their £12.00 round-trip ticket also gave free access to all buses in the city (plus many that go outside it) and to the Edinburgh Tram.

We also took the X99 on prior BI cruise. Easy peasy.

I did BI on MSC (don't recommend) in May.

Fell in LOVE--DH & I are doing it on the Regal in April.

Cobh--loved this little town, just hit a couple pubs; will probably take train to Cork this time. Looks like a lovely small city

Dublin--was a fiasco & unable to get off. SUPER excited to go pub hopping this time!

Glasgow--walked around Greenock. FAIL--nothing much in this sleepy town.

Will train to Glasgow this time

Belfast--did HOHO & LOVED it. Fabulous city. Sad it is not on our itinerary

Kirkwall--took the T11 Orkney Tour. FABULOUS & great price

Invergordon--did a Loch Ness/Highlands/Invernesss Tour via invergordon-bustours FANTASTIC

Completely fell in love w/ this area

This time we add Portland, Edinburgh (YEAH) & LeHavre.

We hit LeHavre in Oct on our N. Europe tour. Our friends got off & said "meh".

It was the last day so we relaxed, did laundry & packed. Possibly the same this time.

Welcome to Aurora Expeditions’ The Crown and The Clans

Few rivalries are as passionate and enduring as that between the Scottish and the English. From the formidable reigns of Cnut the Great, Edward the Confessor and William the Conqueror, to the illustrious dynasties of the Tudors, Plantagenets and Windsors, the British monarchy has sculpted the landscape of today’s United Kingdom. Iconic figures such as William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and Mary, Queen of Scots, led their people in the pursuit of independence, yet despite the storied struggles for sovereignty, 21st-century Scotland remains under the rule of an English monarch.

Our exploration ventures deep into the heart of this historical rivalry, tracing its echoes through castles, battlefields, prisons, and palaces. From the tumultuous days of foreign invasions to the zenith of the British Empire and the media-fuelled drama of modern monarchs, we uncover the clandestine affairs, extravagant lifestyles, and captivating unions that have shaped the course of history. Set against the backdrop of Scotland’s resilient clans, whose unwavering cry for freedom has inspired generations, our journey promises a quintessentially British odyssey. Day 2 Edinburgh

Scotland’s capital hosts you today when you explore its ‘royal’ side on your favourite ‘Your Choice’ experience. There’s plenty of time this afternoon to explore the city independently before we gather this evening for a Welcome Event of Scottish proportions.

Steeped in a captivating blend of history that intertwines the Highland clans with centuries-old ties to the British monarchy, Edinburgh is a highlight of any visit to Scotland. Perched dramatically on volcanic hills and dominated by the iconic Edinburgh Castle, the city has served as a strategic stronghold for centuries. Beyond its imposing fortifications, Edinburgh was a hub of political intrigue, and a meeting place where clan leaders negotiated, celebrated, and occasionally clashed. Its proximity to the Highlands made it a natural focal point for these gatherings, underscoring the city’s pivotal role in Scottish clan culture. In addition to its Highland clan dynamics, Edinburgh boasts deep connections to the British monarchy. Holyrood Palace, the Royal Yacht Britannia , and the annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo, exemplify the city’s royal heritage, steeped in centuries-old traditions of pageantry and military prowess.

Today, visitors to the city are encouraged to explore its royal residences and resting places, museums and galleries, and witness firsthand the traditions that have shaped its unique identity. Edinburgh stands as a living testament to Scotland’s past, where the legacies of Highland clans and the British monarchy converge in a historically nuanced yet enduring relationship.

Personalise your exploration with our included ‘Your Choice’ experiences.

Option 1 – Morning experience: The Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle

Scotland’s most famous mile awaits us this morning, promising a fascinating journey as our guide shares quirky tales and local gems. Immerse yourself in the rich Scottish history woven into the medieval labyrinth of cobblestone alleyways and tenements. Along the Royal Mile, discover the captivating St Giles’ Cathedral, the historical Parliament Square, and the storied John Knox House. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is brimming with secrets and unforgettable stories, offering an experience you won’t want to miss.

At the pinnacle of the Royal Mile, follow in the footsteps of kings, queens, soldiers and prisoners as you explore the historical Edinburgh Castle. This former royal residence is brimming with fascinating stories from its past. Perched high on a volcanic rock, the castle had a strategic advantage over invaders and has witnessed many sieges, often switching hands between Britain and Scotland. An iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site, Edinburgh Castle holds many historical treasures, including the Honours of Scotland – the oldest Crown jewels in Britain. Created during the reigns of James IV and James V, these jewels were first used together for the coronation of Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1543. During World War II, the Crown of Scotland was cleverly hidden in a medieval latrine closet in David’s Tower! Our audio tour of the castle is stacked with fascinating facts about this stoic fortress, making it both factual and enjoyable.

Option 2 – Morning experience: The Royal Mile and the Palace of Holyrood

Our morning starts with a visit to Edinburgh’s royal residence. Holyrood Palace has been linked with Scotland’s royal history for centuries. Mary, Queen of Scots, resided there from 1561 to 1567, during a turbulent period marked by political intrigue. The palace was also home to King James VI of Scotland, who later became James I of England, whose unification of the two nations led to the end of the clans. In more recent times, Queen Elizabeth II used Holyrood Palace for official engagements and ceremonies during her annual ‘Holyrood Week’, where she hosted garden parties and met with Scottish dignitaries. The palace’s opulent decor is complemented by its art collection, featuring pieces from the Royal Collection, and its well-preserved historical apartments, which offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Scotland’s royalty.

From Holyrood House, Scotland’s most famous Royal Mile promises a fascinating journey as our guide shares quirky tales and local gems. Immerse yourself in the rich Scottish history woven into the medieval labyrinth of cobblestone alleyways and tenements. Along the Royal Mile, discover the captivating St Giles Cathedral, the historical Parliament Square, and the storied John Knox House. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is brimming with secrets and unforgettable stories, offering an experience you won’t want to miss.

Option 3 – Morning experience: The Royal Yacht Britannia

A Royal residence for over 40 years, the Britannia enchants us with an audio tour of her decks, apartments, bridge and engine room. Launched on 16 April 1953 from the John Brown & Company shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland, the Royal Yacht Britannia served the royal family for over 44 years. It sailed more than a million nautical miles, becoming one of the world’s most famous ships. To Queen Elizabeth II, Britannia was the ideal royal residence for state visits, official receptions, royal honeymoons, and family holidays. For Great Britain, it was a symbol of the Commonwealth and a proud ambassador, generating billions in trade deals. For the royal family and its 220 dedicated crew members, Britannia was a cherished home. When she was decommissioned in 1997, it marked the end of a long tradition of British royal yachts dating back to 1660 and the reign of Charles II.

Meals: Breakfast, Welcome Event canapés

Day 3 Inverness

We head north to ‘clan country’, for an overnight stay in its heartland: Inverness. The Highlands of Scotland invite us to explore Scotland’s own monarchy, with an en-route stop at the royal Scottish city of Stirling and the battlefields of Culloden.

Perched atop Castle Hill, Stirling Castle stands as a symbol of Scotland’s rich history and royal heritage. This grand fortress, once a favoured residence of Scottish kings and queens, played a pivotal role in the Wars of Scottish Independence. It was the childhood home of Mary, Queen of Scots, and witnessed her coronation. The castle was central to the reigns of the Stewart monarchs, particularly King James VI of Scotland, who became King James I of England, uniting the two thrones for the first time. This union eventually led to the Jacobite uprisings and the demise of the clan way of life. Among other sites within the castle, we explore the magnificent Great Hall, Royal Palace, and Chapel Royal, all beautifully restored to reflect its regal past, while discovering the people and events that have shaped both the castles and Scotland’s history.

Our second stop today offers an insight into the clash of the clans and their British rulers, brought alive this afternoon by our local guides. Scottish clans played significant roles in Scotland’s history and politics. Their relationship with the British crown was complex, marked by alliances and conflicts. The clans often supported different royal factions, notably during the Jacobite uprisings in the 17th and 18th centuries, when many clans backed the Stuart claim to the British throne. The defeat of the Jacobites at the notorious Battle of Culloden marked the end of the clan’s power. Subsequent British policies, including the Highland Clearances, dismantled the clan system, by banning tartan, the Gaelic language, bagpipes, and the communal style of living that the clans had enjoyed for centuries. By integrating Scotland more fully into the British state, English rule diminished the clan influence. Today, the clans’ legacy lives on in Scotland’s culture and heritage, with clan gatherings and tartans celebrated worldwide.

Our guided visit to the battleground of Culloden offers a poignant reminder of the bitter feud between the clans and the crown. The Battle of Culloden, fought on 16 April 1746, was the final confrontation of the Jacobite rising, with the fighting resulting in a decisive defeat for the Jacobite forces led by Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) at the hands of the British government troops commanded by the Duke of Cumberland. The estimated number of casualties varies, but it is generally accepted that around 1,500 to 2,000 Jacobites were killed or wounded during the battle, with those who survived being either imprisoned or executed. In contrast, the heavily armoured British government forces suffered significantly fewer casualties, with around 300 killed or wounded. Standing on the ground where the battle was fought affords us an insight into the brutal manner of 18th-century warfare and its everlasting legacy.

Our overnight stop is in the Highland capital of Inverness. Deeply intertwined with Scotland’s rich clan culture, Inverness is the spiritual home to clans such as the MacDonalds, MacLeods and Frasers, who played pivotal roles in shaping the region’s history and identity. From battles fought to alliances forged, these tight-knit family groups lived a feudal lifestyle, with dedication to their ‘laird’ upmost in their minds. Inverness itself served as a strategic clan stronghold and hosted gatherings that defined Highland life, with annual celebrations such as clan reunions and the Highland Games, celebrating traditional sports and music, keeping alive the legacy of Scotland’s vibrant clan culture.

We gather tonight for dinner, where our host will enthral us with tales of past clan clashes and how they continue to influence ‘the highlands’ 21st century lifestyle.

Accommodation: Inverness Hotel

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 4 Embark Troon (Port: Troon)

Pack your camera this morning, as we may encounter an elusive creature. Not men in kilts, but something nearly as Scottish. Undoubtedly Scotland’s most famous freshwater lake, Loch Ness forms part of the Caledonian Canal, which connects the east and west coasts of Scotland. Extending 37 kilometres in length and dropping to a depth of 227 kilometres, its dark, deep waters are the perfect hiding place for its most mysterious resident. The legend of the Loch Ness Monster, often referred to as ‘Nessie’, dates to the 6th century, when the Irish monk St Columba is said to have encountered a large beast in the River Ness. However, it was not until the 19th century the legend truly captured the world’s imagination, when locals reported seeing a large creature in the water, sparking a series of alleged sightings and numerous expeditions to find the elusive monster. Photographs, sonar readings and various pieces of anecdotal evidence have fuelled speculation and mystery, even though scientific proof of Nessie’s existence remains elusive. We skirt Loch Ness and stop briefly for our own opportunity to see the mysterious beast lakeside.

On arrival at Glasgow, we stop to try a ‘wee dram’. Scottish whisky, or Scotch, is more than just a drink; it’s a symbol of Scotland’s rich heritage and craftsmanship. Distilled for centuries, Scotch embodies the country’s rugged landscapes and meticulous traditions. Each sip tells a story, from the peat bogs of Islay to the crystal-clear waters of Speyside. It is thought that Scots consume around 40 million bottles of whisky annually, reflecting its integral role in their daily lives and celebrations. To be officially classed as Scotch whisky, it must be produced in Scotland and matured in oak casks for a minimum of three years. Visiting a distillery offers a glimpse into this age-old process, where you’ll witness the alchemy of malted barley, pure water, and patient ageing. Tasting the whisky, you’ll appreciate the distinct flavours – smoky, sweet, or spicy – which reflect Scotland’s diverse regions. For Scots, whisky is a proud emblem of their cultural identity and history. Join us on a distillery tour to experience this national treasure firsthand, savour its unique character, and understand its significance to Scotland and its people.

We board Douglas Mawson at the Glasgow port of Troon. After boarding, there is time to settle into your cabin before our important safety briefings. This evening, meet your crew and Aurora Expeditions team as we sail west to the United Kingdom’s enclave of Northern Ireland.

Day 5 Londonderry~Derry, Northern Ireland, UK (Port: Londonderry~Derry)

Our overnight sailing takes us to Northern Ireland, and the fascinating city of Londonderry~Derry. Simply known as Derry to the Nationalist (Catholic) population but still referred to as Londonderry by the Unionist (Protestant) population, this ‘border’ town has seen it all. The sectarian ‘Troubles’ of this predominantly Nationalist city may have blemished its reputation, but in recent years these tensions have eased, and although some suburbs retain their sense of division, strolling the streets is safe and the general population are happy to share stories of their stormy past and ambitious future. We come alongside on the river Foyle, the now open, natural border between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Our experiences offer the opportunity to view one of the United Kingdom’s greatest clashes firsthand.

Personalise your exploration with our included ‘Your Choice’ experiences.

Option 1 – Full-day experience: Londonderry~Derry

Our local guides interpret the story of Londonderry~Derry in this excursion, which is a combination of a walking and coach tour. Having lived through the tumultuous times of ‘The Troubles’ as the locals refer to it, their firsthand experiences immerse us in the era, where a word to the wrong person, a stroll on the wrong side of the street or a misplaced glance, could cost you your life. In recent years, the artists and youth of Londonderry~Derry have painted emotive murals on walls around the city. We pass several of these as our guides explain the city’s tumultuous past.

A number of monuments in the Bogside neighbourhood shed even more light on key events, such as the hunger strikes that marred the city. After lunch at a local restaurant, we finish our tour at the guildhall. In the early 1600s, the city defended itself by building towering 7.9-metre-high walls around the original city. They are among the best-preserved fortified walls in Europe. We walk atop a section of the ramparts on the way to Guildhall before returning to the ship.

Option 2 – Full-day experience: Dunluce Castle, Giant’s Causeway

Northern Ireland is blessed with impressive natural scenery: vast valleys, glittering lakes and cliffs hoisted up from the Atlantic. We visit its most famous natural attraction, the Giant’s Causeway. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Giant’s Causeway consists of some 40,000 interlocking basalt columns lifted from the ocean by volcanic activity over 60 million years ago. Of course, according to legend, giants strode across columns over the sea from Scotland, creating what looks like a giant pathway of stepping-stones that start on land and disappear into the ocean. After lunch at a local restaurant, we follow the Scenic Causeway Road to Dunluce Castle. Once the headquarters of the MacDonnell clan, the castle fell victim to a violent storm and was abandoned. Its ruins and spectacular backdrop have been popular recently, after it was used as the Castle of Pyke in the famous series Game of Thrones . Returning to Londonderry~Derry we enjoy a short driving tour before returning to the ship.

We return to the ship for dinner and sail east to Northern Irelands capital city, Belfast.

Day 6 Belfast (Port: Larne)

A popular port for 18th century emigration to the United States, Larne is located around half an hour north of Belfast.

It is fair to say Belfast has endured its share of turbulent times. Famines, disease, invasions and recessions have painted a picture of a resilient city, but it was the more recent period known as ‘The Troubles’ that defined its image of division. Barbed wire, armed soldiers, and constant bomb searches kept tourists away. Today, however, Belfast has transformed, thanks to open political dialogue and foreign investment. The city feels lighter, as if a heavy burden has been lifted from its shoulders.

Spend your morning on a guided tour of the famous Dockyard of Belfast to experience the story of the city’s most famous production: HMS Titanic , or travel south to visit Hillsborough Castle, the royal residence when the monarch visits Northern Ireland. There is time to explore Belfast independently this afternoon. Larne port is located around 30 minutes north of the city. A shuttle bus will operate this afternoon for those who wish to explore Belfast further, prior to our sailing early evening.

Option 1 – Morning experience: The Queen of all ships – The Titanic Experience

Our morning in Belfast is filled with stories of the workers who toiled 14-hour days to build the world’s most glamorous ships. Did their haste affect the fate of the Titanic ? The dockyard’s Titanic Experience, located where the ship was built, may provide some answers. Guided by a local, you will hear why and how the ship was constructed and what happened in its final hours, walking in the footsteps of the designers and shipbuilders. Discover the world-famous story through their eyes. In the self-guided Titanic Experience, uncover the sights, sounds, and stories of the ship, the city, and the people who built her. Learn about the sinking, the aftermath, the quest to find Titanic , and her final resting place, through unique artefacts and replicas of staterooms and social areas. After our tour, you may choose to return to the ship for lunch or stay in Belfast and join our shuttle to the ship this afternoon.

Option 2 – Morning experience: The Royal Residence of Hillsborough Castle

Enjoy a morning at Northern Ireland’s royal residence, Hillsborough Castle. This Georgian mansion, the Northern Ireland residence of His Majesty the King and home to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, is surrounded by stunning woodlands and formal gardens. Built in the 18th century by Wills Hill, the 1st Marquess of Downshire, it has hosted numerous royal visits and state events. We explore elegant rooms like the Throne Room and State Drawing Room, and learn about its role in the Hillsborough Agreement, which led to the Anglo-Irish Agreement of 1985, along with a stroll through the 100-acre grounds, including the Granville Garden, which was frequented by Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret and featured in the TV series The Crown . After our tour we return to the ship at Larne, where you enjoy lunch, with a shuttle to Belfast available this afternoon.

Day 7 Lake District, England, UK (Port: Heysham)

The village of Heysham, located on the northwest coast of England, serves as our gateway to the historical town of Lancaster and the ever-popular Lake District today. Situated near Morecambe Bay in Lancashire, Heysham has been a vital port for fishing and maritime trade since the Viking era. Its working harbour and historical lighthouses reflect its rich seafaring heritage. Nearby, Lancaster Castle, a medieval fortress steeped in history, overlooks the city of Lancaster, just a short distance from Heysham. The castle’s imposing presence highlights the region’s historical significance, serving as a symbol of power and authority through centuries of English history. Heysham’s proximity to the Lake District National Park adds to its allure, offering visitors easy access to the stunning landscapes and outdoor adventures of one of England’s most beloved natural reserves.

Option 1 – Morning experience: England’s Most Royal Castle, Lancaster Castle

Lancaster Castle, often known as John O’ Gaunt’s Castle, is one of the most historically fascinating buildings in the country. Dating back to Roman times, it stands on a hill overlooking the town of Lancaster and the River Lune. Owned by the Duchy of Lancaster, whose Duke is currently His Majesty King Charles III, the castle has hosted numerous royal visitors throughout its storied past. Among its distinguished guests are King John, Robert the Bruce, Edward II, John of Gaunt, Henry IV, James I, Charles II, Queen Victoria, and Queen Elizabeth II. Beyond its royal connections, Lancaster Castle has a dark and complex history. It served as a fully functioning HM Prison until 2011 and witnessed significant events such as the trials of the Lancashire Witches and over 200 executions. The castle’s role in religious persecution and its use as a place of punishment offer a revealing insight into the nation’s evolving attitudes towards crime and justice. Today, we tour Lancaster Castle, delving into its grim past and exploring its rich royal connections, with time this afternoon to relax onboard or explore Heysham.

Option 2 – Full-day experience: Lake District – The royal holiday resort of Windermere

We follow in the footsteps of many a royal holidaymaker today, by spending time in that ‘quintessentially British icon’, the Lake District . Dotted with 16 lakes, meres and waterways, the region of Derwentwater, collectively known as the Lake District, is beloved for its green rolling hills, slate valleys and quaint towns, with Windermere standing as its crown jewel. Stretching over 16 kilometres in length, Windermere has attracted tourists for centuries and inspired generations of poets and authors, including William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Beatrix Potter.

This region holds a special place in the Victorian history of England. Queen Victoria’s visits to the Lake District, particularly to Windermere, were significant in popularising the area as a holiday destination. Her first visit in 1835 marked the beginning of the Lake District’s reputation as a scenic retreat for the British aristocracy and later, for tourists from around the world. The Cockermouth–Keswick–Penrith Railway, which opened for passenger traffic in 1865, brought even more visitors to the Lake District. A flurry of hotels and B&Bs were built, and steamers began to sail the waterways, showcasing a Victorian ambience that remains today.

Queen Victoria returned to the Lake District several times throughout her reign, staying at various estates. Subsequent visits by monarchs such as King George V and Queen Elizabeth II have maintained its allure. Today, we follow in their wake with a boat cruise on the waters of Windermere, a drive through its rolling hills and valleys, and time spent at a village on its shores.

Day 8 Holyhead, Wales, UK (Port: Holyhead)

Located on the Isle of Anglesey in Wales, Holyhead is a port town steeped in maritime heritage. Today, it serves as a gateway to the stunning hinterland of Snowdonia, renowned for its rustic castles and quaint Welsh villages scattered along the rugged coastline and amid the interior’s rural landscapes. Our ‘Your Choice’ options today offer an opportunity to experience a UNESCO World Heritage listed ‘royal site’.

Option 1 – Morning experience: The Prince of Wales - Caernarfon Castle

Caernarfon Castle’s towering silhouette dominates the bay in Gwynedd, Wales, symbolising a triumph for medieval architecture and royal prestige. Built by King Edward I in the late 13th century to assert English dominance over Welsh princes, it was a strategic response to ongoing regional instability. Edward and his military architect, Master James of St George, oversaw the construction of not just the castle but also the town walls and a quay, a unified effort spanning 47 years and costing £25,000 – an immense sum for its time. Today, its imposing walls and polygonal towers stand as a testament to its formidable past.

Beyond its military role, Caernarfon Castle is deeply intertwined with the British royal family. Here, in 1969, the then Prince Charles was invested as the Prince of Wales, continuing a tradition dating back to 1301. This ceremony, steeped in centuries-old ritual and symbolism, underscores the castle’s enduring link to Welsh history and its role in British monarchy pageantry. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Caernarfon Castle invites visitors to explore its battlements, courtyards, and the iconic Eagle Tower, offering a firsthand glimpse into its architectural grandeur and royal connections. A must do for any visitor to Wales.

Option 2 – Morning experience: UNESCO World Heritage Site – Castell Conwy

Located just a 45-minute drive from Holyhead, the medieval fortress of Castell Conwy has towered over the vital crossing of the River Conwy for seven centuries. Our visit today ensures a plethora of royal stories. One of the most impressive medieval fortresses in Europe, Castell Conwy contains the most intact set of medieval royal apartments in Wales, offering a glimpse into the life of the English monarchy during the medieval period. The high curtain wall and eight lofty towers rise almost as impressively as when they were built more than 700 years ago, and thanks to its restored spiral staircases in its great towers, you can walk a complete circuit around the battlements.

In the distance, the craggy mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia) rise, and below you, the harbour and narrow streets of Conwy are still protected by an unbroken 1,400-yard (1.3 km) ring of town walls. The breathtaking views are complemented by the castle’s rich royal history. Built by King Edward I and his master architect James of St George in just four years between 1283 and 1287, Conwy Castle stands alongside Edward’s other great castles at Beaumaris, Harlech, and Caernarfon as a World Heritage Site. Grandiose and steeped in medieval history, Castell Conwy tells a tale of royal life during the dark days of the Middle Ages, making it a must-see for any royal enthusiast.

This afternoon we are in for a real treat: an onboard performance from a Welsh choir. Welsh male mining choirs are a powerful symbol of Wales’ cultural heritage. Originating in the coal-mining communities, these choirs embody the resilience and camaraderie of the miners. Their harmonies, rich and resonant, reflect the soul of the Welsh landscape and its history. Singing traditional hymns and contemporary pieces, these choirs preserve a unique musical tradition. Attending a performance is a moving experience, showcasing the strength and spirit of Welsh communities through song.

Day 9 Waterford, Republic of Ireland (Port: Waterford)

Sailing the Irish sea, we meet the coast near Rosslare and make our way to the popular city of Waterford.

Known as the city where culture meets the ‘ craic’ (that is Irish for a good time), Waterford is a modern city with a layered history. Invaded by the Norsemen in 914 CE, Waterford became a Viking settlement, which is reflected in its people even today. It emerged from the Middle Ages as a trading port with the wealth from goods that came from as far away as Newfoundland, the profits of which funded the construction of the many Georgian mansions that line the city’s streets. A town for those who enjoy a good stroll, Waterford is easy on the eye, offers plenty to see and as its reputation suggests, is full of fun.

Today's 'Your Choice' experiences let you dive into some intriguing regal encounters. Discover the Kennedy family's ancestral stronghold in Wexford, where the Kennedys are considered American royalty, travel to Kilkenny Castle for an intriguing story of nobility gone wrong, or enjoy a visit to every royal family’s favourite crystal producer; Waterford Crystal. We’ll dock at the Port of Waterford, only a handy 10-minute coach shuttle into town, affording you an afternoon exploring Waterford should you wish, before we set sail in the early evening.

Option 1 – Morning experience: Kilkenny Castle

Considered Ireland’s best preserved medieval city, Kilkenny mixes small town intimacy with a big city buzz. The former home to the seat of the medieval Irish parliaments, it rivalled Dublin in importance, which is evident in its imposing Norman buildings and marble-clad facades even today. Few buildings in Ireland can boast a longer history of continuous occupation than Kilkenny’s monolithic castle, and few have a more fascinating family story. Kilkenny Castle’s 800 years of history is associated with the rise and fall of the Marshall and Butler families who rose in nobility from Earls to Dukes. In more recent years they were known for their marriages to famous personalities, such as Winston Churchill’s cousin, and Ellen Stager, an American heiress who brought quite a fortune into the Butler family. However, by 1922 Kilkenny Castle was embroiled in political problems when it was occupied by Republicans and besieged by troops of the Free State. In 1967, the family sold the castle to the Kilkenny Castle Restoration Committee for a mere £50. If you love a good riches-to-rags story, you will enjoy the story of Kilkenny and its powerful peerage.

Option 2 – Morning experience: Viking Waterford and Waterford Crystal

This morning, we embark on a locally guided walking tour of Waterford, a city steeped in history and renowned for its crystal craftsmanship. Known as the Viking Triangle, Waterford’s city centre reflects its roots, dating back 1,100 years when Norse invaders settled here, enriching the area with their trade. Moving through the city’s modern side, with its vibrant mix of pubs, clubs and artisan shops, we explore its centre before joining our artisan tour.  At the House of Waterford Crystal, established in 1783, we witness the artistry behind these world-famous glass creations named after their hometown. From the initial design to the final engraving, we observe master blowers, crystal cutters and engravers at work, gaining insight into the meticulous craftsmanship that defines each masterpiece.

Option 3 – Half day experience: Kennedy Homestead, Wexford, and Johnstown Castle

Built in 1810 as a Gothic Revival masterpiece, Johnstown Castle conceals a history steeped in royal rebellion. Among its notable guests was Oliver Cromwell, who stayed here in 1649 before the infamous Sack of Wexford. His Roundhead army prepared on the castle’s grounds, while the Catholic Esmonde family, were later expelled during Cromwell’s rebellion against the British crown. Purchased by the Grogan family in 1692, Johnstown Castle saw Cornelius Grogan hanged for his role in the 1798 Rebellion as commissary-general for the United Irishmen. In 1810, the estate was restored by John Knox Grogan, who, along with his son Hamilton Knox Grogan-Morgan, transformed it into the Johnstown Castle we see today, built upon the ‘bones’ of a Norman tower house. A visit reveals sumptuous apartments, landscaped grounds and a tale fit for royalty.

Escaping the Great Famine in the 1840s, the Kennedy and Fitzgerald families seized an opportunity, boarding a ship bound for Boston. A century later, their great-grandson, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, made history as the first Catholic President of the United States. During his 1963 visit to Ireland, JFK journeyed to Wexford, retracing his ancestors’ footsteps. Today, we follow his pilgrimage to the small Kennedy homestead, where an interpretative exhibit tells their remarkable story. The centre offers a guided tour featuring audio-visual presentations, a photographic exhibition, and historical displays detailing Patrick Kennedy’s journey as a famine emigrant and the achievements of his descendants.

Day 10 Falmouth, England, UK (Port: Falmouth)

Having explored the fractured past between Ireland and the United Kingdom, we arrive around midday at the quintessential British county of Cornwall. The seafaring folk of Cornwall have traditionally lived around the crags and coves of the county’s coastline in small villages that hug bays and cling to clifftops. Falmouth, with its rich maritime heritage, was established in the 17th century and played a crucial role in naval history, serving as a base for packet ships that carried mail across the British Empire. The town’s natural harbour facilitated its development as a significant maritime centre. Today, Falmouth is a vibrant community known for its maritime activities, including shipbuilding and fishing.

This afternoon, we tender ashore due to tidal restrictions, as mariners have for centuries to join ‘Your Choice’ of Cornish experiences. Once the tide permits, we'll dock to welcome you aboard in the late afternoon and sail for Plymouth early evening.

Option 1 – Afternoon experience: Cornwall’s Maritime Obsession

Visiting the National Maritime Museum Cornwall offers a deep dive into the county’s rich maritime heritage. Located at nearby Falmouth marina, this museum explores Cornwall’s historical significance as a maritime hub, with an emphasis on Falmouth, which in the 1880s was so internationally important that 25 countries had consular representatives there.

The Cornish are deeply connected to the sea, from smugglers and pirates to fishermen and naval personnel. The sea has played a major role in the county’s story, and this museum tells the broader tale of Cornwall, not just its boats. The museum showcases the maritime history of Britain’s first and last port of call, from the packet ships of the late 17th century to the port’s heyday in the 19th century. Modern maritime achievements, including those of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Dame Ellen MacArthur, and the honourable story of Cornwall’s Royal National Lifeboat volunteers, are also highlighted. With interactive exhibits and countless boats on display, a visit here promises to be a fascinating journey into Cornwall’s enduring relationship with the sea.

Option 2 – Afternoon experience: Henry VIII’s Pendennis Castle

Travel back to Tudor Cornwall with a visit to Pendennis Castle. Conveniently located on the Falmouth headland, this historical site was commissioned by Henry VIII to protect his kingdom against the marauding French. The castle is steeped in tales of attack, invasion, and even the odd ghost or two. Remarkably, while the castle was being built, Henry VIII managed to marry three of his wives, divorce one, and behead another, all without halting construction. Built between 1540 and 1545, the castle stands as a testament to Tudor military engineering. It played a crucial role during the English Civil War, enduring a five-month siege before falling to Parliamentarian forces. Over the centuries, Pendennis continued to serve as a military stronghold, seeing action during both World Wars.

Today, the castle offers a glimpse into its storied past with well-preserved fortifications, interactive exhibits, and stunning views of the Fal Estuary. Visitors can explore the castle’s history, from its Tudor origins to its 20th-century defences, making it a fascinating journey through time.

Option 3 – Afternoon experience: Marazion and St Michael’s Mount

This afternoon, we step back in time with a visit to Marazion and St Michael’s Mount. With a coastline perfect for clandestine activities, the village of Marazion, a former haven for smugglers, retains its air of intrigue. Tales of hidden treasures and secret passages add mystery to this hamlet’s charm.

Just offshore lies St Michael’s Mount, an island with a medieval castle steeped in legend and lore. Originally a pilgrimage site in the 8th century, it became a Benedictine monastery in the 12th century, mirroring Mont Saint-Michel in France. Over time, it evolved into a fortified castle, protecting the region from invasions. In the 14th century, following the English Civil War, Colonel John St Aubyn was appointed Captain of the Mount and purchased it in 1659 for £1,900 – a hefty amount at the time. Today, Lord and Lady St Levan – James and Mary St Aubyn – continue the family’s stewardship of this unique place. (Access to St Michael’s Mount is via a causeway, dependent on tides, or by small boat. Visiting times may be affected by the tides and cannot be guaranteed – should this not be feasible on the day we will visit Penzance instead).

Day 11 Plymouth (Tender Port: Plymouth)

Today, we step ashore in a port steeped in maritime history and royal connections: Plymouth. This city’s rich legacy begins with the Mayflower , which set sail from Plymouth in 1620, carrying the first Pilgrims to America. Landing at Plymouth Bay, Massachusetts, this voyage marked a pivotal moment in Europe’s expansion to the ‘New World’, with over 30 million people today tracing their ancestry to its 102 passengers and crew from England and Leiden, Holland. We literally follow in their footsteps, as our tender comes alongside within sight of the very steps they used when boarding the Mayflower , giving us direct access to Plymouth’s centre.

Plymouth’s maritime heritage extends to Sir Francis Drake, a celebrated naval commander and explorer. Famous for circumnavigating the globe and defeating the Spanish Armada in 1588, Drake was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I aboard his ship, the Golden Hind , in Plymouth harbour. Over the centuries, Plymouth’s naval significance has deepened royal ties, with the late Duke of Edinburgh serving as Commodore-in-Chief for Plymouth. This enduring connection underscores Plymouth’s pivotal role in British naval history and its global influence.

Option 1 – Morning experience: The Story of Plymouth

Welcome to Plymouth, a city steeped in maritime heritage. Our locally guided tour starts in the historical Barbican, where the Pilgrim Fathers embarked on the Mayflower in 1620. Standing by the Mayflower Steps, you can almost hear the echoes of their momentous departure to the New World, a journey that would forever link Plymouth to American history. We wander up to Plymouth Hoe, to envision Sir Francis Drake calmly playing bowls as the Spanish Armada approached in 1588. The panoramic views of Plymouth Sound from the Hoe offer a glimpse into the natural harbour that has served as a vital naval base for centuries. On the headland, Plymouth Castle remains a military installation, its silhouette serving as a reminder of the city’s strategic importance through the ages.

Our tour ends at the Royal William Yard. This beautifully restored naval victualling yard, now bustling with restaurants, galleries and shops, perfectly blends Plymouth’s rich maritime past with its vibrant present. Choose to linger here or return to our tender pier, with plenty of time to explore Plymouth further as we sail late afternoon to the Isle of Wight.

Option 2 – Morning experience: HMP Dartmoor

Visiting Dartmoor Prison offers a compelling glimpse into the harrowing history of 19th-century Britain. Built during the Napoleonic Wars, Dartmoor was a response to the appalling conditions on floating prisons, known as ‘hulks’, anchored in Plymouth. Overcrowding, poor sanitation, and inadequate diets on these ships led to high death rates, prompting the construction of a land-based prison. Princetown on Dartmoor was chosen, and the first prisoners arrived on 22 May 1809.

By 1813, Dartmoor Prison was severely overcrowded with the arrival of American prisoners, worsening already dire conditions. Outbreaks of pneumonia, typhoid and smallpox claimed the lives of more than 11,000 Frenchmen and 271 Americans, whose graveyards and memorials are located at the rear of the prison. After the wars ended, prisoners were repatriated, and the prison closed in early 1816. It reopened in 1850 as a penal establishment for criminals. Today, Dartmoor Prison remains operational. Our visit to its museum offers historical insights and exhibits about the prison’s past, presenting one of Britain’s most fascinating and brutal stories.

Option 3 – Morning experience: The Thatched Hamlet of Cockington

An hour’s drive through the Devon countryside brings you to one of southern England's rural gems. Step into the hamlet of Cockington, where the passage of time has stood still. Snug in the heart of Devon, this picture-perfect village offers a rare glimpse into life before Britain’s industrial revolution. The streets lined with charming, thatched cottages transport you into the rural lifestyle of the English nobility and their estate workers. Here, the pace of life remains as slow and simple as it was centuries ago, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a bygone era.

Today, Cockington lovingly preserves its rich heritage while nurturing a vibrant creative community. Along with the village itself, the former aristocratic home, Cockington Court, has been transformed into a hub of craft studios where artisans showcase their skills in dedicated 'making areas' and sell their handcrafted creations.

Day 12 Cowes, Isle of Wight (Tender Port: Cowes)

The Isle of Wight, a favoured summer holiday destination, offers travellers more than Victorian-era seaside towns and sandy beaches. Just three kilometres across the Solent from the Hampshire coast, this 388-square-kilometres island’s strategic location has guarded ports like Southampton and Portsmouth throughout history, from Roman times, through to the Spanish Armada, to the Battle of Britain.

The coastal gem of Cowes hosts us today as we anchor in its famous bay and tender ashore like the royals of olde. This ‘yachty’ town boasts a royal sailing legacy and has hosted the esteemed Cowes Week regatta since 1826. This sailing hub attracts yachties and royalty alike to its renowned waters, home to prestigious sail makers and synonymous with wealth and yachting prestige. Strolling its waterfront streets, we find an eclectic mix of shops and cafes filled with sailing equipment, seaside souvenirs and tasty baked treats respectively.

Early this evening, we sail the Solent, following in the wake of countless ships that have departed from Southampton and Portsmouth over the centuries. These waters have carried emigrants seeking new lives, soldiers heading off to war, and cruise passengers embarking on transatlantic journeys. On board, enjoy a Farewell dinner as we pay homage to our own voyage’s end.

Option 1 – Morning experience: Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s Osborne House

Framed by giant oaks and manicured gardens, Osborne House stands in a northern suburb of Cowes as a splendid testament to the love between a prince and his queen. Built between 1845 and 1851, Osborne House was designed by Prince Albert as a gift for his wife. This Italianate palace reflects their tastes and interests, providing a glimpse into the private lives of these very public figures.

Osborne House served as a family home where the royal couple and their children could escape the formalities of court life. The house features grand state rooms, intimate family rooms, extensive gardens and a private beach fit for a queen. Visitors can explore Queen Victoria’s exclusive apartments, the unique Durbar Room, built by the Queen to honour her attendant Abdul Karim, and the Swiss Cottage, where the royal children learned practical skills.

After Prince Albert’s death in 1861, Queen Victoria found solace at Osborne House, spending much of her later life there. She died at the estate in 1901 at the age of 81. Osborne House also played a significant role in the lives of her successors. King Edward VII and George V enjoyed the seclusion and family-oriented atmosphere, finding it a place where they could relax away from the public eye. Osborne House’s blend of architectural beauty, royal history and personal artefacts make it a fascinating destination for anyone interested in the Victorian era.

Option 2 – Morning experience: Carisbrooke Castle

The popular royal attraction of Carisbrooke Castle hosts us this morning on this locally guided tour. Sitting high at the heart of the Isle of Wight, Carisbrooke Castle served as an artillery fortress, a king’s prison, and a royal summer residence. Its most notable resident, King Charles I, was famously imprisoned here and made a daring but unsuccessful escape attempt before his execution in 1649. The castle later became the home of Princess Beatrice, Queen Victoria’s favourite daughter, who served as its governor, and the beautiful Princess Beatrice Garden is named in her honour. Visitors can explore the historical chapel of St Nicholas and meet the beloved Carisbrooke donkeys, along with visiting the museum, which holds over 30,000 treasures donated by the people of the island. Carisbrooke may be a little ‘themed’ but with its deep royal connections, popular cafe and enthusiastic staff, it makes for a fun ‘Isle of Wight’ morning out.

Option 3 – Morning experience: Cowes – The Crown Jewel of Sailing

We join a locally guided walking tour of Cowes to hear tales of famous yachts, sailors and royal reunions. The name ‘Cowes’ is synonymous with royal yachting, largely due to its strong connection with the British monarchy’s obsession with sailing. This picturesque town has been the centre of yachting since the founding of the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1815, one of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert popularised Cowes as a royal yachting destination, establishing Osborne House nearby as their summer retreat. The annual Cowes Week, one of the longest-running and most famous sailing regattas globally, attracts sailors and European royalty alike, including members of the current British royal family. Britian's sailing heritage is celebrated at Cowes offering visitors a rich insight into the nations illustrious yachting history and royal connections.

Our walking tour will lead us to the Max Aitken Museum, named in honour of the renowned yachtsman and newspaper magnate Sir Max Aitken. Housed in an 18th-century sailmaker's loft originally used by Ratsey & Lapthorn, the museum was acquired and meticulously restored by Sir Max in 1947. It offers a captivating look into the craftsmanship that has established Cowes as a premier yachting destination. Inside, you'll find a rich collection of maritime souvenirs, artifacts, and artworks, providing a unique glimpse into Britain’s esteemed yachting heritage.

Day 13 Disembark Portsmouth (Port: Portsmouth) - London

We cross the Solent overnight and disembark at the naval city of Portsmouth. Our journey takes us on a regal route with a visit to the town of Royal Windsor, where we visit King Charles III’s weekend retreat, Windsor Castle.

Windsor Castle stands as an iconic symbol of British royalty, recognised as the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. Initially constructed by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it has been a royal residence for nearly a millennium. Its majestic architecture, profound historical significance, and role as a functioning royal palace make it a dream for royal aficionados. Throughout history, it has witnessed pivotal events, including rebellions and reprisals, births and burials, weddings and divorces, while during World War II, Windsor Castle provided crucial refuge for the royal family, safeguarding them from the London bombings. In 1992, a devastating fire almost destroying several galleries complete with artwork, prompting Queen Elizabeth II to famously describe the year as her “annus horribilis”.

Today, Windsor Castle remains an active royal residence. It continues to host state visits, ceremonial occasions and commemorations, perpetuating its legacy as an integral part of British heritage. Our visit includes exploring the State Apartments, St George’s Chapel, and the extensive grounds, all of which showcase the castle’s rich history and grandeur before we continue our journey to London.

This evening, you are free to sample some local fare. Perhaps try pheasant pie and risotto, coddled eggs, or foraged wild mushrooms, all said to be King Charles III favourites.
