Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle to start January comedy tour at Oklahoma City's Paycom Center

An upcoming comedy tour headlined by Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle is set to begin later this month in Oklahoma City.

The two prominent comedians are currently scheduled to peform five dates through late January in cities across Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama and South Carolina. The tour will kick off at Oklahoma City's Paycom Center, and tickets go on sale 10 a.m. Friday at ticketmaster.com .

The duo previously had headlined a joint tour in December 2022 , where they made crowds laugh in San Diego, San Francisco and Phoenix. They also toured the U.K in September.

Rock and Chappelle rose to fame in past decades for their comic routines and sketches humorously exposing, diagnosing and lampooning political hypocrisy, racial identity and cultural issues, building on the foundation of predecessors such as Richard Pryor and  George Carlin .

In 2022, however, both men were in the headlines after various controversies.

Last March, Rock was the victim of " the slap heard 'round world ," when actor  Will Smith  walked onstage during the Academy Awards and smacked the comedian across the face in response to a joke Rock made about Smith's wife, actress  Jada Pinkett Smith .

Meanwhile, Chappelle placed himself within a media firestorm, attracting criticism for  jokes on "Saturday Night Live",  in his Netflix special "The Closer" and on other stages that some people condemned as antisemitic  and  transphobic . Chappelle also was the victim of an assault at the Hollywood Bowl in May by a man who claimed his jokes about the LGBTQ community and homelessness were "triggering" and stormed the stage, lunging at Chappelle and tackling the comedian to the ground before security detained him.

According to the venue's website, the Jan. 20 event at Paycom Center is being advertised as a "phone-free experience," where the use of mobile phones, smart watches and other accessories will be prohibited in the performance space.

Once guests arrive at the venue, all mobile devices and accessories are to be secured in individual Yondr pouches that they will be allowed to hold on to throughout the show and then reopen at the end of the event. Guests will only be allowed to access their devices in a designated Phone Use Area at the venue and must re-secure them in the Yondr pouches before returning to the performance area.

"Anyone seen using a device (phone, smart watch or accessories) during the performance will be escorted out of the venue by security," the notice reads. "We appreciate your cooperation in creating a phone-free experience."

Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle set to perform third co-headlining tour following recent controversies

Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle are giving fans an encore, with the comedians heading out on the road together for another joint headlining tour.

The tour, which kicks off Jan. 20 in Oklahoma City , will see Rock and Chappelle play five dates in cities across Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama and South Carolina. Tickets for the tour go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at ticketmaster.com .

The two previously headlined a tour together in December 2022 , performing in San Diego, San Francisco and Phoenix. They also toured the U.K. in September of that same year.

Rock and Chappelle have become known for their comic routines that cannily expose, diagnose and lampoon political, racial and cultural hypocrisy and identity, building on the foundation of such predecessors as Richard Pryor and George Carlin .

In 2022, however, both men were in the headlines in association with various controversies.

Last March, Rock was the victim of the slap heard 'round world , when actor Will Smith walked onstage during the Academy Awards and smacked the comedian across the face in response to a joke Rock made about Smith's wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith .

Meanwhile, Chappelle placed himself within a media firestorm, attracting criticism for jokes on "Saturday Night Live" and on other stages that some people condemned as anti-Semitic and transphobic .

These incidents explain why a press release announcing the show contains unusually strong wording about the prohibition of cellphones and the ownership "rights." While concertgoers "maintain possession of their phones throughout the night," all phones and smart watches are "secured in Yondr pouches that will be unlocked at the end of the show."

"No cellphones, cameras or recording devices will be allowed at this show," states the press release, from Live Nation Entertainment. "Anyone caught with a cellphone in the venue will be immediately ejected."

On ownership rights, the release states that "any jokes and sketches delivered during (the) performance...may not be copied, translated, transmitted, displayed, distributed, or reproduced verbatim" without express prior consent from Pilot Boy Productions, a film and TV production company founded by Chappelle.

The release continues: "Any Use of the Materials without the express prior written consent of Pilot Boy Productions, Inc. is strictly prohibited and shall be subject to all available legal remedies, whether in equity or at law at the cost of anyone who violates this prohibition."

Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle make history on this co-headlining tour

Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle Chris Rock And Dave Chappelle

Why see Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle?

A legendary co-headlining tour.

Two titans of American comedy team up once again for this historic tour! Both lauded in their own right for their contributions to comedy, this co-headlining jaunt gives fans the opportunity to enjoy a set from each of these iconic comedians. Kicking off in Oklahoma, the duo will blow away your January blues - with stops in St. Louis, Alabama and more before wrapping up in South Carolina.

Starting his comedy career in 1984, Rock was spotted by Eddie Murphy in New York, who gave the aspiring comedian his first film role in Beverly Hills Cop II. He later joined SNL, becoming known as one of the show's 'Bad Boys' alongside Adam Sandler, David Spade, and Chris Farley. With mainstream exposure garnered from the show, he spent the 90s and 00's switching between film roles and comedy, earning a name as a raw and unfiltered act, who is unafraid to delve into politics, race, and cultural issues. Now one of the biggest acts in the comedy world, he returned to touring in 2022, taking to the road solo with his first new show since 2017. Still controversial (The 2022 Oscars anyone?) and still undeniably hilarious, don't miss this legendary comic as he joins forces with Chappelle for what is sure to be an unfiltered and exciting event!

Dave Chappelle

Beginning his comedy career in 1991 Chappelle quickly made a name for himself on the New York comedy circuit. Gaining popularity at an unprecedented pace Chappelle hit the big time with  Chappelle's Show  on Comedy Central in 2003. Featuring a range of different comedy sketches the  Chappelle's Show  garnered the star two Emmy nominations .  However, the overwhelming popularity took its toll on the comedian. Becoming angry and upset at the direction his beloved show was going, Dave Chappelle quit and headed off to South Africa for some much-needed rest and reflection.

Over the next half-decade, Chappelle made a few rare TV and stand-up appearances until 2013 when he returned to the comedy circuit! Since 2017 Chappelle's career has hit milestone after milestone, winning two Emmy awards and two Grammy awards for his TV appearances and comedy albums.
