English Premier League: Chelsea dent Tottenham's top-four hopes with win at Stamford Bridge

Goal highlights. Credits: Image - Getty Images; Video - Sky Sport

Pinpoint headed goals from Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson have earned Chelsea a 2-0 victory over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League, dealing a blow to Spurs' hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League.

Former academy defender Chalobah diverted the ball expertly into the top corner from a Conor Gallagher free-kick 35 metres out in the 24th minute, giving Chelsea a deserved lead, after sustained pressure from the home side, with chances for Mykhailo Mudryk, Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke.

Spurs defender Micky van de Ven kept his side in the match, with last-ditch tackles in the area and a clearance off the line.

Tottenham's Australian coach Ange Postecoglou looked furious in the dugout throughout the first 45 minutes, and his side came out of the second half with greater verve and determination, but efforts by Son Heung-min and Pedro Porro were blocked and saved.

Senegal's Jackson calmed home nerves against the run of play in the 72nd minute when he was on hand to head home after a free kick from Chelsea top scorer Cole Palmer hit the bar and bounced down.

The three points, taking them to eighth, were vital for the push by Chelsea, under former Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino, towards a Europa League place after a disappointing season but left Tottenham seven points adrift of the top four.

More from Newshub

"We are in a good place," Pochettino told the BBC. "We have amazing professionals working on set-pieces.

"The team really showed in the way we wanted to build this way to play."

He has described the first half as fantastic: "Then you have to contain and suffer."

Postecoglou has taken responsibility for the defeat.

"I feel like we've lost a bit of belief and conviction in our football, and that is on me to change that," he told Sky Sports. "We were nowhere near good enough, that is on me."

Tottenham have a poor record against their southwest London rivals. They lost the home fixture last November 4-1 and have won only one of their last 10 meetings.

Team news | Chelsea vs Spurs | Skipp back in fold for Stamford Bridge trip

Oliver Skipp will be back in the fold and available for selection when we take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday.

The Academy graduate and boyhood Spurs fan unfortunately missed Sunday's north London derby clash with Arsenal having picked up a knock in training last week .

However, Head Coach Ange Postecoglou has today confirmed that the midfielder has recovered from that issue and will be an option for him when we make the trip to west London.

While Oliver will return to the squad, Ange had disappointing news as he confirmed that both Ben Davies and Timo Werner will both now miss the rest of the campaign after they both picked up injuries in the clash with Arsenal.

Timo and Ben join long-term absentees Destiny Udogie (quadriceps), Manor Solomon (knee), Fraser Forster (foot) and Ryan Sessegnon (hamstring).

Tottenham were ‘so far off it’ in defeat at Chelsea, says angry Ange Postecoglou

  • Angry Spurs manager says his side lacked ‘positive mindset’
  • Pochettino defiant after statement win over his former club

Ange Postecoglou admitted Tottenham had the wrong mindset after their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League were hit by a limp 2-0 loss to Chelsea .

Spurs, who lie seven points below fourth-placed Aston Villa with four games to go, were woefully short of fight on a damaging night. Their frailties at set pieces were exposed again and although they have a game in hand on Villa, Postecoglou had no complaints about Chelsea extending his side’s losing run to three matches.

“It wasn’t a great night for us,” the Spurs manager said. “We didn’t play anywhere near the football and didn’t have the mindset that I expect us to have. That’s on me, I’ve got to take responsibility for that.

“I’m the one putting them out there and preparing them for it. When we’re so far off it, I’ve got to look at myself and see how I’m preparing this team for it. We lacked a real conviction and positive mindset in our football. We didn’t really have any fluency, any sort of aggression with and without the ball. It’s a bit unlike us.”

Postecoglou, who takes his side to Anfield on Sunday, refused to be drawn on whether he is worried about the deterioration of his side’s form. “It is what it is,” he said. “I don’t think in those terms. It’s my responsibility to prepare the team every game and make sure we meet certain levels. We didn’t do it today so that lies at my feet and I’ve got to fix that.”

Mauricio Pochettino, who savoured victory over his former team, felt Chelsea produced their best performance of the season. “It is the most happy I’ve been,” Chelsea’s head coach said. “In the way we play, the way we compete, that is what we wanted from the beginning of the season.”

Chelsea, who are up to eighth, are three points behind sixth-placed Manchester United and still have hope of qualifying for Europe. But Pochettino added that whether he will be in charge next season is not up to him.

after newsletter promotion

“It’s difficult to see every single week that I am under scrutiny and judgment,” he said. “It’s not my decision whether to be here or not. We’ll see if we have time to build.”
