Red wooden cottage amongst the trees reflected in the lake in rural Finland

With winter skies painted in dancing lights, a capital city steeped in Nordic culture and plenty of chic Scandinavian style, there's much more to this northern gem than snow and saunas.

Best time to visit finland.

Finland has pleasant summers, with July being the warmest month (temperatures usually average around 59°F).

Outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking and fishing are popular during summer and spring.

In Lapland midsummer is also the time of the midnight sun, a phenomenon where the sun barely sets.

Winter runs from November to March and during this time expect plenty of snowfall - perfect for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and sledding. With temperatures regularly hitting -4°F, Finland's winters are particularly cold, so pack accordingly if traveling at this time.

Geography and environment

Finland is home to large tracts of forest, a multitude of pure lakes and hundreds of islands, making it one of nature's most blessed landscapes.

The north of Finland (known as Lapland) is characterized by relatively flat terrain, demarcated by long rivers and due to its Arctic location, extreme snowfall and ice can be found, particularly in winter.

Bordering   Sweden ,   Norway   and   Russia , Finland also has long stretches of coastline along the Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia.

The coastal areas are home to thousands of rocky islands (which are mostly uninhabited) while the interior of the country is dominated by forests and lakes.

Finland is home to some of the world's best fresh produce, and the variety of berries on offer is astounding. Blessed with ideal climatic conditions for berry-growing, visitors can expect to snap up superior tasting, fresh cloudberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and lingonberries, See them offered fresh at markets and shops, served alongside meals in sauces, jams and spreads or baked in delicious pies.

3. Kaalikaaryleet

These baked cabbage rolls are a standard entry on most Finnish restaurant menus. Featuring ground beef, rice, onion and cream wrapped in cabbage rolls and served with cranberry or lingonberry sauce, they may be hard to pronounce but they sure are easy to eat.

4. Graavilohi

Finland has a proud heritage steeped in fishing, so it's no surprise that the quality of seafood is very high. This simple meal of salted salmon doesn't need any dressings or condiments as the pure, natural flavors of the salmon are the main attraction.

These sweet bread treats have numerous varieties, from cinnamon, to almonds and raisins. Typically eaten with a coffee, pulla are an inexpensive cafe snack - a great, budget choice in a notoriously expensive country.

Finland FAQ's

Finland is often ranked number one for being the happiest country in the world, as the Finns have high incomes, health care for all, and a top education system. Finland is famous for it's spectacular Lapland, the northern lights, Saunas, majestic forests, quirky food and for being the home of Santa Claus.

One of the most appealing things about Finland is its beautiful nature. Breathtaking expanses of forest, picturesque lakes, and stunning skies attract visitors from all over. The land is supremely unspoiled, making the landscape here stand out from other, more populated countries. There are plenty of outdoor things to do in Finland, from canoeing and kayaking to hiking and skiing. But it’s not just the wilderness that makes Finland so appealing; its cities are fantastic as well. A famously liberal and innovative country, cities like Helsinki , Tampere , and Turku are lively and forward-thinking rich in design, delicious cuisine, and trendy bars. And you can`t miss the official home of Santa in Rovaniemi , situated near the Arctic Circle, you'll also discover a lively nightlife and world-class museums here. The Finnish Lapland Region lies in Finland's far north country above the Artic Circle, making winters in this area cold and long, and dark. The region is home to Santa Claus, his elves, herds of reindeer, and the indigenous Same people, who have inhabited the region for thousands of years. The lively towns and ski resorts is just minutes away from the peace and quiet of the wild wilderness. Some towns that can be found in this region: Rovaniemi , Kuusamo and Akaslompolo . The Finnish Lakeland region, situated on the eastern and central parts of Finland, boasts a blue labyrinth of lakes, islands, rivers and canals. The region is interspersed with forests and ridges stretching for hundreds of miles in a peaceful and spectacularly landscape just waiting to be explored. Some towns that can be found in this region: Jyvaskyla , Tampere , and Kuopio . The Western Finland Coast offers visitors with an authentic experience of Finnish culture and history. Stretching for over 300 miles, Finland's west coast is home to an assortment of historic towns such as Oulu, Vaasa, Pori and the Unesco-protected Rauma, founded at the height of the Swedish empire. From the scattered islands of the archipelago in the south, over the cultivated plains of Ostrobothnia, to the rolling hills with their unique aapa bogs, this region offers a range of Finnish landscapes with plenty of outdoor adventure to be had. Some towns that can be found in this region: Oulu , Vaasa , and Pori . The Southern Finland Coast lies by the Gulf of Finland, stretching into the Lakeland of interior Finland. It is a destination on the rise with a lot to offer, especially in terms of untouched arctic and subartic nature. It is also the most populous part of the country, including the urban sprawl around Helsinki. Discover the fantastic ensemble of islands and islets scattered over a fascinating archipelago, colorful Scandinavian wooden houses, and thousands of lakes and dense forests. Some towns that can be found in this region: Kotka and Kouvola .

Contrary to what many travelers believe, Finland`s climate is quite diverse and varied throughout the year. Not surprisingly, July is the country's warmest month and February is the coldest. While temperatures in the winter months rarely climb over 30 degrees Fahrenheit, the chance to see the Northern Lights also makes this a great time to visit Finland. However, the fairly warm summers provide great opportunities to explore the culture and wilderness of the country, and late spring, especially May and June, are the most pleasant months in Finland. Finns take their summer vacations in July, which means higher prices, some business closures, and the need for advance reservations.

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

Finland`s a large country and traveling can be expensive. Public transportation is well organized, comfortable and often new, and advance bookings are rarely necessary outside the biggest holiday periods. By Train: Trains are operated by Finnish State Railways. Comfortable Express and InterCity trains, plus faster, tilting Pendolino trains, serve the principal cities several times a day. If you`re travelling by night train, we recommend to go for the more expensive sleeper cars if you plan on getting any rest, as no provision is made for sleeping in the ordinary seated carriages. Elsewhere, especially on east–west hauls through sparsely populated regions, trains are often tiny or replaced by buses on which rail passes are still valid. InterRail passes are valid on all trains. The best timetable is the Rail Pocket Guide published by VR and available from all train stations and tourist offices. Bu Bus: Buses cover the whole country, but are most useful in the north. Tickets can be purchased at bus stations and most travel agents; only ordinary one-way tickets can be bought on board. Visit www.matkahuolto.fi , which lists all bus routes or ask for the timetable, available at all main bus stations. By Bicycle: Cycling can be an enjoyable way to see the country at close quarters and the only considerable hills are in the far north. You can take your bike along with you on an InterCity train for about a €10 fee (reservations rarely necessary), and most youth hostels, campsites and some hotels and tourist offices offer bike rental from around €15 per day; there may also be a deposit of around €30.

The currency of Finland is the Euro.

Finnish and Swedish are the two official languages of Finland. English is quite widely spoken in Finland, though not quite as prevalent as the other Scandinavian countries. Just under three quarters of Finns report being able to speak English, many of them fluently, which is a very high proportion in itself and compares favorably to most other countries outside of Scandinavia. We suggest you get a good English-Finnish guidebook and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, excuse me and numbers 1-10.

Finland - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Winter is a good time to plan a holiday to Finland

Spending holidays in Finland is like visiting a winter wonderland. However, this northern European nation rarely gets the attention it deserves. Finland is one of the most outstanding and breath-taking countries in the world. In winter, its snow-covered forests, frozen valleys, and endless horizons will transport you to a fairy-tale world. During the summer, tree lines as far as the eye can see, clear blue skies, and untouched lakes will make you want to stay forever. A trip to Finland needs to be in your travel bucket list if it isn’t already. Don’t miss out on some of the most breath-taking landscapes on earth.

Travel Highlights

  • Visit Suomenlinna, which is an 18th century sea fortress and a UNESCO world heritage site.
  • Visit Helsinki Senate Square, a must-see in every visit to Helsinki.
  • Rovaniemi is the “official” home of Santa Claus, and a mere one hour flight from Helsinki .
  • Högberget’s Cave is another outstanding sight that was formed during an ice age.
  • The Legendary Gold Fields of Lapland is full of myths and adventure.

Travel Tips

  • Finland is the land of saunas. It would be a crime to not seek one out while visiting. The country claims to have roughly 3.5 million saunas in all of Finland, which is equivalent to a sauna for every 1.6 people.
  • Thanks to the strong influences from Sweden and Russia, Finnish architecture is one of the most breath-taking ones in Europe. Go for a walk around Helsinki and admire the architecture, especially works by Alvar Aalto.
  • If you’re looking to connect with nature, there’s no better place than Finland. Pack appropriately and head out to the Finnish archipelago for an amazing experience.
  • If you’re not planning on driving, then it’s a good idea to obtain a Rail Pass while in Finland. These passes could save you quite a bit on transportation, and help you get around the country easily.
  • For those who want to visit Finland on a budget, opt for the Fall and Winter months. Prices at these times are, as you might expect, much cheaper than the high season. Frozen Finnish landscapes are truly mesmerizing, which makes it absolutely worth it.
  • If you’re hunting for northern lights, then the winter months are the best times to visit. Sign up for a northern light safari, and go out hunting for northern lights on a snowmobile!

Finland has seasonal weather so please do check up on best time to visit Finland before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Finland, do check out our Finland Travel Guide for more information.

Located in central Helsinki, this concert venue is a monumental ode to nature and light, cloaked in gleaming strips of Carrara marble. Your Local Specialist might even let you in on the secret of its optical illusion.

Indulge in Helsinki's Market Hall for local flavors

Enjoy a drink at Café Esplanad

Sweeten up your Finland trip with a visit to Café Esplanad, known for their giant cinnamon rolls (a Finnish pastry called Korvapuusti), that are freshly baked in the café. You’ll find a bubbling European atmosphere inside the store, or you can bask in the sunshine on the outdoor terrace.

Visit the Chapel of Silence

Take a moment for quiet reflection at the Chapel of Silence (also known as Kamppi Chapel). Located at the core of Helsinki, this small contemporary building inspires tranquility, with its curved wooden facade and a shielding interior. A peaceful retreat amidst the hubbub of the city, this is a magical place to pause and take a breath.

Stroll through Helsinki's Design District

Of all Helsinki attractions, the city’s Design District is one of the most alluring. Set in the center of Helsinki, the district is a web of creativity covering over 25 streets and 200 buildings. Discover artistic boutiques, visit the Design Museum, one of the oldest museums in the world, and sample Finnish cuisine in the vibrant cafes.

Our top 5 things to do in Finland

In a city that’s famed for its architecture and cuisine, you can spend hours exploring Helsinki’s streets. Wander aromatic markets and sweeping boulevards as you sample sweet pastries. Here are our favorite activities when we’re out on a trip, and our guests love them too.

Mannerheim Museum

Located in an impressive residential area in Helsinki, the Mannerheim Museum was established to preserve and showcase items from the life and times of Baron Gustaf Mannerheim, a famous president of Finland. The museum is located in the former home of Mannerheim, who lived there from from 1924 to 1951.

Seurasaari Island & Open Air Museum

Discover traditional Finnish rural life in the beautiful countryside at the Seurasaari Island & Open Air Museum. Located on an island just a few kilometers from Helsinki, you’ll find cottages, cabins, farmsteads and manors from the past four centuries. The buildings feature original furniture and dress that have been brought in from all over the country.

Luonnontieteellinen Museo

Housed in a former cadet school built in 1913, the Luonnontieteellinen Museo (Natural History Museum of Helsinki) contains a variety of zoological collections including skeletons, prehistoric remains and taxidermied animals. You’ll find an incredible taxidermied African elephant, a moose statue and an exhibition of Finnish nature.

Best museums in Finland

Every trip to Finland offers the chance to explore its intriguing museums. Discover the life of Baron Mannerheim, see a taxidermied African elephant, or roam the countryside in an open-air museum.

A traditional Finnish specialty, Lohikeitto is a delicious creamy soup made with chunks of salmon, leeks, boiled potatoes, topped with a sprinkling of dill. Simple and hearty, this well-loved dish is the perfect way to warm up your Finland tour.

Fried Baltic Herring

Found only in the Baltic sea, Baltic herring is one of the most popular fish species eaten in Finland. You can try it smoked, salted, pickled or baked, and it’s delicious when fried - doused in a creamy batter and fried in butter until crispy.

Karelian Pasty

Karelian pasties or pies are among the best-loved traditional Finnish dishes. Handmade with a thin rye crust, they are commonly filled with rice and carrots or mashed potatoes, and spread with an egg butter before eating them hot out of the oven.

Best food in Finland

Finnish cuisine is a highlight of all of our Finland travel experiences, with creamy soups, dark rye breads, buttery pastries, and plenty of fish like smoked salmon and fried herring.

What to pack for Finland

People packing for a tour

Water and windproof clothes

Protect yourself from Finland’s unpredictable weather with water and windproof clothes and a scarf - the Finns wear scarves all year round, so you’ll fit in with the locals.

Comfortable shoes

Whether you’re walking the streets of Helsinki or exploring forest trails, you’ll need a comfortable pair of shoes. If you’re visiting in winter, waterproof shoes are best for the snow.

An essential item all year round, sunglasses will protect your eyes from the bright Midnight Sun in summer, and the glaring snow in winter.

Finland is a photographer’s dream, from the city architecture to the Northern Lights. Remember to pack a waterproof bag for your equipment and bring extra batteries as they die faster in cold weather.

An adaptor plug

Voltage in Finland is 220V and the sockets are of Type C or F, with standard European 2-pin plugs.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and toiletry bottles.

More information about finland.

Finland holidays are to be transported to the winter since even in the warmer months of the summer you will need to take your coat and gloves with you, as when the afternoon comes you can feel the chill in the air. It is a friendly country where lovers of winter activities and sports will find a wide range of possibilities, especially the farther north you travel.

Located in northern Europe , and with coastlines on the Baltic Sea, the nation of Finland is the most sparsely populated country in the European Union and is known around the world for its unique natural phenomena, such as the Northern Lights and the midnight sun , and for being the home of Santa Claus , who lives in Rovaniemi, in the northernmost region of Finnish Lapland. Year-round, visitors flock to this region to meet the man himself, who is often accompanied by his famous reindeer.

A Nordic country sandwiched between Norway, Russia,  and Sweden, a  Finland vacation package is the perfect winter escape. The capital, Helsinki, located on the south coast, is bursting with cultural institutions, museums, churches, and home to the impressive Helsinki Cathedral , the symbol of the city.

Other large cities include Espoo and Tampere , although a lot of Finland tour packages tend to focus on its amazing countryside or the numerous ski resorts, of which there are at least 75 , the largest of which are located in Lapland with unspoiled blankets of snow from December to April. Composed of 19 regions, each with their own regional councils, Finland stands out from other European countries for its unique culture and landscape.

History of Finland

Inhabited since approximately 9000 BC, around the end of the last Ice-Age , hunter-gatherer communities were the first settlers on the territory and ancient artifacts and stone tools show that these communities shared a lot in common with other Baltic and Russian civilizations at the time.

From the 8th century onwards, Finland was considered a trading power of the Baltics , exporting wares such as fur to the courts of Europe. In the 12th century, the influence of neighboring nations, particular Sweden , began to grow, as the Swedish colonized coastal Finland during the Northern Crusades , introducing Christianity and imparting elements of culture which are still seen today, for example in the prevalence of the Swedish language.

Visitors on a Finland holiday package will also notice the distinct Russian influence, evident in some of the architecture found in the capital, such as the imposing Senate Square and Orthodox churches like the Upenskin Cathedral. The main period of Russian influence in Finland began in 1809 , when the country was incorporated into the Russian Empire, during the Golden Years of the Tsars . The country managed to shake off Russian control following the Russian Revolution in 1917, which sparked a period of intense civil war in Finland , although the Finnish Republic was declared at the end of 1918.

The Second World War also had repercussions for Finland as it was during this time that Russian forces again occupied a number of islands and regions under Finnish territory and later demanded war reparations. In order to afford the demands of the Russians, the country quickly industrialized, leading to prompt development and the adoption of a number of Nordic models to suit the revitalized economy, in particular, the Nordic welfare state model.

Nowadays, Finland is considered one of the world’s most prosperous countries, with a fantastic education system, a high equality ranking and a strong sense of stability. Like a number of Nordic countries, Finland is admired by much of the world for its way of life, and a trip to Finland is a perfect insight into its culture, history and the daily lives of its citizens.

Nature in Finland

As one of the world’s most northernmost countries, Finland boasts a rich array of diverse landscapes and brilliant natural attractions and National Parks. Magical seasonal changes are characteristic of Finland, with long summer days, the revival of nature in the spring, leafy autumn months and snowy winters.

A large amount of the country is barely developed, promising an abundance of wildlife and unimaginably beautiful countryside. A quarter of the country is located within the Arctic Circle , and in the northernmost regions, the Midnight Sun endures for around 70 consecutive days in the summer, with the sun remaining above the horizon for over two months.

To experience this natural phenomenon is an extremely attractive prospect for travelers on a Finland holiday package; there are very few places on earth where the sun shines eternally for such a long period of time. Another rare natural phenomenon is the iconic Northern Lights , most visible during autumn and spring in Lapland , where the dazzling, dancing colors of solar flares can be seen as frequently as every other night if the sky is clear. With around 60 native mammals , a trip to Finland is ideal for animal lovers who want to catch sight of some of the country’s most iconic wild animals such as the grey wolf, wolverines and the majestic brown bear, of which there are approximately 1,500.

A real icon of the country, brown bears can be found in the ‘Wild East’ where, during the summer, sightings are almost guaranteed. Finland’s national bird, the whooper swan is another wildlife highlight, whilst the country’s marine life is characterized by populations of whales , seals,  and seabirds.

Known as the Land of a Thousand Lakes, although there are actually as many as 188,000 lakes , covering 10% of the country’s territory, Finn’s traditionally head to lakeside cottages in the summer to soak up the abundance of nature and swim in the glistening water. Two of the most prominent lakes in the country are Lake Inari and Lake Saimaa , the latter of which is home to the endangered Ringed Seal, and the only place in the world where these unique freshwater seals can be found.

Despite balmy summers, those preparing for a holiday to Finland during the winter must be prepared to face its frigid temperatures. Although the capital city and south of the country are no match for the weather experienced in the more northern regions, the mean daily temperature can still sit below zero for the entire winter period, whilst up in Lapland, home of Sami people , the harshest winter nights can see temperatures fall as low as minus 45 degrees Celsius! The great outdoors is truly respected and celebrated in Finland .

Culture in Finland

Finland is often heralded for its positive community spirit and open-minded culture, making it a pleasant country to holiday in and to a great place to get to know the locals. Not only was it the first European country to grant universal suffrage in 1906 , allowing everyone to vote, it is also known for its progressive laws and policies and enshrines many unique freedoms for the benefit of its citizens.

One example of this is the Finnish concept of ‘ Everyman’s Rights’ which ensures that everyone, including visitors, has the right to roam freely around the countryside and natural areas such as forests, lakes, and rivers without the permission of landowners, proof of the significance of the great outdoors to the Finnish. Even Finnish Design , world-renowned for its practicality and pleasing aesthetics, integrate natural shapes, materials, and designs in order to bring nature into everyday life.

The role of religion is also at the heart of Finnish culture; as much as 70% of the population are members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church , and the capital of Helsinki is home to a wonderful array of religious institutions, cathedrals, and churches, many of which are unmissable sightseeing destinations on a tour of Finland.

The sauna is perhaps the most iconic element of the country’s cultural landscape; there are so many saunas in Finland that the number equates to one per household and there is even a sauna inside the parliament buildings! With the purpose of relaxation and rejuvenation, a visit to a sauna is a must-do activity on a Finland holiday package , if only because it is the best way to interact with the locals.

Finally, it is true that the country is considered one of the safest in the world, the good nature of its people ensure that it might be one of the few places on earth where lost items such as wallets are almost always returned to their rightful owners!

The land of the midnight sun, Finland captivates visitors with its imaginative approach to nature. Despite the intense nature of its winters, the country embraces the snow, ice, frozen lakes and darkness to become one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. Experience the dazzle of the Northern Lights , go skiing under the midnight sun and refresh yourself in a glistening lake on a warm summers evening on a trip to Finland.

Whether you're ready to relax in the sauna or explore Helsinki's vibrant Design District, Finland has what you didn't know you needed. From endless light to endless night, discover what makes Finland's culture unlike anywhere else on the planet.

Helsinki cityscape and Helsinki cathedral at sunset, Finland

The Culture

Finnish culture is similar to neighbouring Nordic countries, yet stands apart from Scandinavia and the rest of Europe . Finnish people can seem reserved at first, but it doesn't mean that they're cold. Finns are considered good listeners, so interrupting is seen as impolite. However, it's not common to strike up conversation with strangers on the street.

An essential part Finland's one-of-a-kind culture revolves around saunas. Stripping off your clothes and sweating with friends might seem strange to outsiders, but saunas play a role in business and social interactions alike. The time spent in the sauna is up to your tolerance level, and can be followed up with a dip in the lake or roll in the snow. Be sure to drink plenty of water afterward, as you'll be sweating a lot!

Egalitarianism is paramount to Finnish culture. As a European leader in gender equality, men and women participate equally in all parts of Finnish society. A strong belief in the social welfare system helps reinforce this equality.

The Best Time to Visit

Finland is a place of contrast. In June, the skies stay bright all night with very few hours of actual darkness. In December, the country plunges into darkness, illuminated by the dancing colours of the Northern Lights.

Finnish summers are a time for celebration. Most cultural events and festivals occur during this time, with lots of sunshine and warm to hot weather. The country comes alive during Vappu, a countrywide celebration during the first day of summer.

Winter is a great time to explore Finland's snowy landscapes, hit the ski slopes, and warm up in the sauna. Snow begins to fall in November and can last until May. February-March are better for winter exploration as they have more daylight than December-January.

Fall brings crisper temperatures but leaves turn beautiful hues of red, orange, and gold. Spring varies, and can see snowstorms in the north while wildflowers begin to spread throughout the south.

Fall and spring are the best times to see the Northern Lights. However, in Lapland, the lights shine about every other clear night between September and March. Your best chances of seeing the Northern Lights are on clear starry nights, so keep an eye on the skies and watch the show!

Things to Know

Contrary to popular belief, Finland is technically not a part of Scandinavia . Finland is among the "Nordic countries" but few Finns care to make the distinction.

Finnish is spoken by the majority of the population, but Finland is actually a bilingual country. A Swedish-speaking minority makes up 5% of the population, so maps often bear both Finnish and Swedish names. You can also hear Sami languages spoken across Lapland in the north.

Food & Drink

Due to their proximity, Sweden and Russia have had considerable influence on Finnish cuisine. Traditional Finnish cuisine revolves around potatoes, fish, pork, milk, butter, and rye bread. Nowadays, contemporary creations and traditional styles fuse together in Finnish kitchens, making dining out a fashionable yet comforting affair.

Fresh and local ingredients sourced directly from fields and waters are highly valued. Berries are an important staple of Finnish food culture, either eaten fresh in the summer or preserved into jams for the winter months. Fish, caught fresh from the chilly waters of the Baltic Sea, makes an appearance in many Finnish dishes. Smoked fish is a specialty of the archipelago, but there are plenty of tasty bites like pickled Baltic herring, or kalakukko, a sort of fish pie. Towards the end of summer, try rapu, a boiled crayfish flavoured with dill that's popular during the season.

While Finnish coffee might not have any particular traditions, Finns are the world's largest consumers of coffee per capita. The average Finn drinks four cups per day. Do as the Finns do and pair your coffee break with korvapuusti, a Finnish cinnamon roll, or pulla, a cardamom-flavoured bread. Yet, this is not Finland's national drink — milk takes that honour, and it's sometimes served curdled!

We were very pleased with the service provided by our travel consultant, Sofia. She was very prompt in replying to all our queries. We enjoyed the itinerary where different experiences were offered - various train rides and cruises. The hotels were good, all centrally located and spacious with very good breakfasts provided. Everything is planned for with detailed information, maps and vouchers. All we needed to do was present ourselves at the various venues. We felt assured that there is someone who knows our plans and who we could call upon should we require any assistance. I would definitely recommend Nordic Visitor to anyone who wants to go Scandinavia on a free-and-easy yet have all the hassle of planning taken care of.
