Membership – How it all works

Live your dream and go on your next hunt without having to pay for high cost outfitters and make new friends along the way.

How can I do that?

  • Do you have access to hunt a local big game species, predators, small game, or waterfowl?
  • Are you able to organize  a hunt and take a  new friend along  hunting with you?
  • Maybe you just have a good piece of hunting property or accommodations that you would be willing to grant accesses to?
  • Would you be willing to trade a hunting experience with a fellow member, so that you could both fulfill your hunting dreams?

If you answered  yes to the questions above then your dream hunt may be closer than you think! There are countless hunters around the world that have access to hunt their local species, but may only dream of having an opportunity to hunt the same animals you hunt all the time.  Some hunters may just want a change of pace, an  opportunity to hunt in a different location, or to try a different style of hunting. Other hunters are  just looking  to make new friendships with like minded people and share great hunting experiences together.

So how does it work? Step 1: Create a profile and share who you are with other members.  Step 2: Create a hunt that you would be willing to trade to other members. Step 3: Search our database of available hunts and setup a trade. Step 4: Have fun, go hunting and make new friends! Step 5: Report back, share pictures and the details  of how your hunt went with fellow members of The Hunt Exchange.

IGUANA HUNT CHARTERS🦎 A UNIQUE AND FUN HUNTING ADVENTURE. ● Max 3 persons per boat! However, if more than 3 we can accommodate a 2nd or 3rd boat for your group. Ask Captain Experiences for more details. Green Iguanas are not native to Florida and are considered invasive species due to their impacts to native wildlife. The Green Iguana is native to South & Central America, Mexico, and some islands of the Caribbean but, once again, because of the popularity of the iguana in the pet trade, they have become invasive in South Florida, Hawaii, Texas, and Puerto Rico. Iguanas are a big problem in Florida as they cause damage to commercial and residential landscape vegetation. Most property owners consider these reptiles as a nuisance. These animals are mostly attracted to plants with flowers, foliage, or any kind of vegetables, and they destroy them. HOW THEY GOT HERE Florida's first green Iguanas likely hitched a ride on Cuban cargo ships transporting goods to Florida. Soon after their arrival, the herbivorous lizards reproduced rapidly and established themselves throughout South and Central Florida. CAN YOU EAT AND WHAT DOES IGUANA TASTE LIKE Iguanas are referred to as the "chicken of the trees," by iguana eaters, because they are said to taste " like chicken ". Many people enjoy the meat from iguanas because of the high levels of protein it provides. In fact, iguana is a pretty lean meat and contains more protein than chicken. It's a common delicacy in Mexico, Central and South America — and in trendy U.S. restaurants that cater to anyone craving a lizard entree. Iguana gourmets in the U.S. are sometimes immigrants from other countries looking for a taste of home. WHY DO PEOPLE HUNT IGUANAS They are invasive and they cause damage to seawalls, sidewalks, landscape foliage and can dig lengthy tunnels causing millions in damages to residents and businesses. Also, they prey on the vulnerbale native Burrowing owls by eating their eggs and drive them out of their homes. Non-native iguanas are multiplying so rapidly in South Florida that a state wildlife agency is now encouraging people to kill them. Book your ultimate hunt adventure! Enjoy and have fun while helping to remove South Florida invasive species. Read More

You will hunt until around 11am or until you limit out! You can expect to find almost every species of Diver ducks and Puddle ducks, also known as dabbling ducks in the Coastal Bend area. The puddle ducks most commonly found are, Pintail, Gadwall, Wigeon, Shoveler, Blue Wing Teal, Green Wing Teal, Mottled Ducks, and there is even the rare opportunity of seeing a Cinamon Teal! The Diving Duck or Divers we most commonly find here in South Texas are Bufflehead, Greater Scaup, Lessor Scaup, Hooded Merganser, Common Merganser, Canvas Back, and Goldeneye. Clearly the area has such a large selection of Waterfowl. You can also easily find the Black Belly Whistling Tree Ducks. On occasion, you can also find a few Lessor Snow Geese and Speckle Belly Goose or White-fronted Goose . Brian will hunt ducks in Corpus Christi Bay, Nueces Bay, Aransas Bay, Redfish Bay, Copano Bay, and Port Bay. Most of his hunts are by airboat, hunting the shallow water back bays, in duck blinds or on mangrove islands. *Worried about bringing the kids?* If this is their first time to hunt, don’t hesitate. Captain Brian has raised four of his own, the youngest just barely able to write his own name; he understands the patience that is required to take them hunting. It is Captain Brian's philosophy that introducing our youth to the outdoors will ensure the future of our wildlife. It will also teach them the correct way to stay safe and be responsible hunters! Hunting in Altha

Join Paul for a Hog hunt sure to please! On this hunt you will be exploring the florida wilderness and have the opportunity to shoot as many hogs as you’re able to. Paul and his team will equip you with all the gear necessary (guns, ammo, night vision equipment, etc.) and then you will set off on this spot-and-stalk style hunt. All of Paul’s hunts are private, so it will be just your group and your guide on this adventure. Paul and his team strive to offer the most authentic hunting experience possible, and so his property is entirely free range. Please note that this package does not include lodging or meals. Your adventure will begin around dusk when you will meet Paul and his team onsite to go over all of the safety rules as well as instructions for all of the gear and equipment. Our night vision equipment includes video capable pulsar thermal scopes and Night Optics D760 6x Gen III night vision. Once you’re comfortable with all the equipment and all questions have been answered, your guide will take you to start the hunt. We have thousands of acres of farmland to hunt on, and your guide will know the best places to start looking for hogs. Between motion activated cameras, baiting, and even word of mouth from local farmers, your guide will drive you to the best locations for hogs throughout 6 hours of thrills under the stars. On brighter nights customers can expect shooting opportunities around 100 yards, and when it’s darker they’ll sneak within 100 yards to get shots as close as possible. Finally, at the end of your hunt Paul and his team will clean and package all of the meat you want to take home free of charge. We’ve been leading night vision hog hunts in the area for almost a decade. Feral hogs are considered an invasive species in Florida, reproducing quickly and wreaking havoc on local crops. In an effort to alleviate this issue, we partner with local farmers, giving us thousands of acres of farm land to patrol and averaging 200+ kills a year. As with any wild animals and any hunting expedition, we cannot guarantee exactly where the hogs will be or that kills will be made. However, we do guarantee our best effort to ensure that you see action and enjoy your hunt. Read More

8 Affordable Hunting Trips for the Budget-Minded Hunter

8 Affordable Hunting Trips for the Budget-Minded Hunter

Many people think that you need big-time money to go on a big game hunting trip. While money can certainly buy you some exciting hunting experiences, you don’t need to break the bank in order to have a great time hunting. Check out our list of affordable hunting trips so that you can find how to have a great time hunting on a budget!

Table of Contents

Hunt Elk in Idaho

Hunt whitetail deer in kansas, hunt antelope in wyoming, hunt turkey in nebraska, moose in alaska, south dakota mule deer, hogs in texas, black bear in idaho, make sure you’re fully equipped for your big hunt.

Idaho may not be the first state that many hunters think of when they think of elk habitats, but there are plenty of good bulls that call Idaho home. Plus, the state provides over-the-counter tags at a first-come, first-serve basis , meaning that anyone has the opportunity to score an elk tag.

In order to find land to hunt elk in Idaho, you want to search in grasses and agriculture fields. There’s a plethora of natural forests, state forests (which are public), and private lands that are a part of the Access Yes! Program . If you have a GPS and a general bearing of your surroundings, you should be able to track down a bull, stalk him and get your chance at a kill.

Why It Made the List

The main reason that Idaho elk hunting made the list is the fact that you can primitively camp in most national forests at no cost. This saves you a good amount of money on lodging, meaning you can save most of your money on the tag, license, and permit (around $600 total), food, fuel, and more.

Price: Less than $1,500

Many hunters have heard the lore of the giant whitetail deer that roam in Kansas — and the stories are true. The entire state is littered with trophy deer, and although the price of a tag is pretty expensive (near $450), the rest of the trip is incredibly affordable, which makes it a great option for anyone looking for one of the best hunting trips on a budget.

The state of Kansas is broken up into four different regions for deer hunting, and the tags are all available through a drawing process. Once you get your tag, there are plenty of options for how you hunt. Depending on your budget, you can cut costs by camping in a tent or an RV, or if you have a little bit of wiggle room, you can stay in hunting lodges or motels. Do your research and find a method that works best for you to get a cheap hunting trip put together!

Price: $500 – $1,000

Have you always wanted to try out hunting antelope in the United States? Wyoming provides you with plenty of opportunities to hunt down some speed goats without breaking the bank.

Wyoming is filled with state land and walk-in areas that you can hunt in. However, you’ll want to accumulate some preference points before you try for a tag since the tags can go pretty quickly. If you aren’t able to get a tag, there are leftover tags available, which will have less public land and less trophy potential, but still a good amount of antelope.

Wyoming is filled with different opportunities for you to hunt antelope at an affordable rate. You can find lodging at a campground for less than $25 per night, and if you prepare correctly (pack food ahead of time) and cut corners, you should be able to tag an antelope for a great price.

Price: $1,000 – $1,250

When it comes to getting a lot of game for your dollar, it’s hard to beat a turkey hunt in Nebraska. In the spring, you are allowed up to three birds per season, and a single turkey permit costs a little over $100. Plus, with modern-day technology and smartphones, you can purchase extra permits on your phone, meaning that you can hypothetically get all three turkeys in the same day for less than $350.

Single Bearded Turkey

If you’re looking for a cheap bow hunt, you’re not going to find many hunts that are more budget-friendly than a Nebraska turkey hunt. Once you’ve got your permits and your bow, the rest of the expenses are minimal. Most turkey hunting can be done on public land, and the state of Nebraska is relatively cheap in terms of lodging. As long as you don’t have to travel too far to get there, it’s an incredibly affordable trip to take.

Price: Less than $500

Many people would assume that any moose hunt would cost well over $3,000 — and when you mention that it’s in Alaska, you would think that it would cost $5,000+. While a tag and license do cost close to $1,000, if you’re willing to put a little bit of work in and walk for a ways, you can swing an entire moose hunt for closer to $2,000, which is a pretty cheap big game hunt.

Obviously, one of the most expensive parts of this hunt will be getting to Alaska. But, once you make it there, you’ll have to put some work in. Lace-up your boots and be prepared to stalk some moose — especially if you are looking for a bigger one.

Price: Around $2,000

Not only is there an abundance of mule deer in South Dakota, but there’s also an abundance in public land, and with reliable populations and relatively light hunting pressure, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get a mule deer without breaking the bank.

A deer license in South Dakota costs just south of $300, but once that’s been paid, you can be generally flexible with the rest of your expenses depending on how comfortable you want to be in your hunt. If you’re hunting near the national forests, you can find lodging for around $60/night. Take some time to do some planning and figure out when and where you want to go for your hunt.

Price: $1,400 – $1,600

Texas is a state unlike any other, so it’s only right that they have a hunting experience that’s completely unique. Not only can you hunt feral hogs in Texas, but you can do so at any time of the year and without a bag limit. Just purchase Item 157 (their “non-resident 5-day special hunting license) for a little less than $50 and you can hunt throughout the week!

There are some public hunting lands that you can utilize, but for the price, your best bet is to work through an outfitter and get put in a position to succeed. With such a low overhead cost and the affordable price of a license, spend the extra money on a good outfitter and make it the most productive week possible!

Price: $500 – $1000

A bear hunt may seem to be the pinnacle of pricey, but it doesn’t have to be! If you’re looking to hunt black bears in the Rocky Mountains, you can do so for a reasonable rate in Idaho from late spring to early summer.

If you want to keep the hunt under $2,000, you’ll have to go without a guide. Thankfully, there are plenty of tags available over the counter in Idaho, and some places even allow you to take two bears. Take to the national forest land and prepare to do some spotting and stalking for a while, but if you are patient, you should get the opportunity to find a nice bear.

Price: $1,500 – $2,000

Does one of these inexpensive hunting trips have you packing your bags and looking at dates? If so, you’ll want to make sure that you’re fully equipped for your big hunt! U.S. tourist faces 12 years in prison after taking ammunition to Turks and Caicos

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.

Other rules you can decide for your Trading Post are :

An Oklahoma tourist says he faces 12 years in prison in the Caribbean after he mistakenly left 4 bullets from a hunting trip in his carry-on duffel bag

  • Ryan Watson was on vacation when he was charged with illegally carrying ammo into Turks and Caicos.
  • He and his wife, Valerie, say the four bullets in their duffel bag were unknowingly left there from a hunting trip.
  • Watson now faces 12 years in prison, alongside several US tourists charged for similar offenses.

Insider Today

An Oklahoma man traveling with his wife in the Caribbean territory of Turks and Caicos faces 12 years in prison after four rounds of ammunition were found in his luggage.

Ryan and Valerie Watson arrived in Turks and Caicos earlier this month to celebrate his 40th birthday with several other couples, their families said in a GoFundMe. NBC Boston reported that the Watsons arrived on April 7.

But the pair, who have two young children, were arrested in the self-governed British territory after airport security found the four bullets in their carry-on duffel bag.

Their families' GoFundMe said the ammo had been left in the bag unintentionally, and was from a prior deer hunting trip.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for white-tailed deer, and I recognized them, and I thought: 'Oh, what a mistake.' I had no idea that they were in there," Ryan Watson told NBC News.

Valerie Watson was released from the charges on Tuesday and flew back to Oklahoma to reunite with her children.

But her husband remains in Turks and Caicos, and was granted $15,000 bail the day after by the local supreme court, according to a police statement.

He now faces 12 years in prison, which is the minimum custodial sentence for bringing firearms or ammunition into Turks and Caicos.

Ryan Watson must stay on the islands and report twice a week to a local police station while waiting for his hearing, which is set for June 7.

Meanwhile, his family is trying to raise $300,000 for his legal fees and housing in the Caribbean.

"Isolated from their family, friends, and children, they face mounting legal fees, living expenses, and the overwhelming stress of their situation," their GoFundMe reads. "The emotional and financial toll is immense, and they are at risk of losing everything."

Related stories

"We were trying to pack board shorts and flip flops," Valerie Watson told CBS News . "Packing ammunition was not at all our intent."

The Watsons did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider through their GoFundMe.

Eight US tourists prosecuted since February

It is illegal to bring firearms or ammunition into Turks and Caicos, and penalties apply regardless of the offender's status or country of origin, according to the local attorney general's chambers.

Several tourists caught under this law were previously let off with just a fine, while at least one was given a prison sentence under the minimum limit.

But in February, a court of appeal ordered that all offenders be given at least the minimum sentence of 12 years in prison.

At least eight tourists from the US have since been prosecuted under this rule, per the attorney general's chambers.

Another American tourist, 31-year-old Tyler Wenrich , was charged on Tuesday with possessing ammunition after he arrived in Turks and Caicos on a cruise ship, according to local police.

"While going through a security checkpoint, it was discovered Mr Wenrich allegedly had ammunition in his possession," a police statement said.

Amid the recent spate of tourist arrests, the US State Department published a September advisory warning US citizens that it wouldn't be able to secure their release if they brought firearms and ammo into Turks and Caicos.

"We strongly encourage you to carefully check your luggage for stray ammunition or forgotten weapons before departing for TCI," the advisory said.

The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider.

Tourism is a key revenue for Turks and Caicos, and in 2019 provided about $787 million, or 65% of the island's GDP, to the territory, per a 2023 report by the Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce.

The Caribbean archipelago is a popular port of call for US cruise ships, and this year has seen a 127% jump in tourist arrivals — the largest increase in the world — compared to 2019, the United Nations World Tourism Organization said in February.

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

American officials, wearing dark suits, walk through a street at night in Shanghai.

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken cheered on the sidelines at a basketball game in Shanghai on Wednesday night, and spent Thursday chatting with students at New York University’s Shanghai campus and meeting American business owners. It all went to emphasize the kind of economic, educational and cultural ties that the United States is pointedly holding up as beneficial for both countries.

But hanging over those pleasantries during his visit to China this week are several steps the U.S. is taking to sever economic ties in areas where the Biden administration says they threaten American interests. And those will be the focus of greater attention from Chinese officials, as well.

Even as the Biden administration tries to stabilize the relationship with China, it is advancing several economic measures that would curb China’s access to the U.S. economy and technology. It is poised to raise tariffs on Chinese steel , solar panels and other crucial products to try to protect American factories from cheap imports. It is weighing further restrictions on China’s access to advanced semiconductors to try to keep Beijing from developing sophisticated artificial intelligence that could be used on the battlefield.

This week, Congress also passed legislation that would force ByteDance, the Chinese owner of TikTok, to sell its stake in the app within nine to 12 months or leave the United States altogether. The president signed it on Wednesday, though the measure is likely to be challenged in court.

Mr. Blinken’s visit, which was expected to take him to Beijing on Friday for high-level government meetings, had a much more cordial tone than on the trip he made to China last year. That trip was the first after a Chinese spy balloon traveled across the United States, tipping the American public into an uproar.

In a meeting with the Shanghai Communist Party secretary Thursday morning, Mr. Blinken said direct engagement between the U.S. and China was both valuable and necessary.

“We have an obligation for our people — indeed an obligation to the world — to manage the relationship between our two countries responsibly,” he said.

Speaking to students at the N.Y.U.’s Shanghai campus later that morning, he said the educational exchanges the students were engaged in provided a “ballast” for a complicated and confrontational relationship.

Since President Biden met with the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, in California in November, the U.S.-China relationship has seemed more stable, with nothing like the dramatic ups and downs of the trade spats under former President Donald J. Trump.

But the Biden administration has still been marching toward a more restrictive economic relationship with China.

That includes controls on semiconductor technology, which are being raised by both sides as a more prominent issue than ever before. The Biden administration has been weighing further export controls, particularly on factories that have been helping produce advanced semiconductors for the Chinese tech giant Huawei.

“By explicitly trying to degrade Chinese tech capabilities, especially on advanced AI, the United States has moved export controls to the forefront of the U.S.-China agenda,” said Emily Benson, a trade expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank.

In a call between Mr. Biden and Mr. Xi earlier this month, both leaders raised the technology controls as matters of central importance.

Mr. Biden emphasized that the United States would continue to take necessary actions to prevent advanced American technologies from being used to undermine its own national security, without unduly limiting trade and investment, according to the White House.

Mr. Xi said that putting new sanctions on China was not “de-risking,” but creating risks. If the United States was bent on “containing China’s hi-tech development and depriving China of its legitimate right to development, China is not going to sit back and watch,” he said, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

U.S. officials say their restrictions are necessary given China’s authoritarian government and statist economic model. But the moves have rankled Chinese leaders and pushed tensions over economic measures to their highest point in years.

The measures are not just emanating from the U.S. government: Susan Shirk, the author of “Overreach: How China Derailed Its Peaceful Rise,” said that China had pivoted toward a more self-sufficient industrial policy, and has been seeking to supplant the United States as a high-tech superpower under Mr. Xi.

“Xi openly acknowledges that while he wants China to be less dependent on other countries, he wants to keep other countries dependent on China ‘as a powerful countermeasure and deterrent’ as he put it, ‘against them cutting off supply,’” Ms. Shirk said.

China, too, has allowed security concerns to affect a greater proportion of its economy, even as Mr. Xi and other Chinese leaders have tried to reassure foreign businesses that their investment is welcome. A new national security law has extended Beijing’s reach into Hong Kong, threatening the city’s status as a financial hub. American executives have been alarmed by China’s investigations of foreign firms, as well as the country’s broader rules against sharing data and information with foreigners.

Despite China’s complaints about the U.S. government’s efforts to crack down on TikTok, China itself has for decades banned other Western social media services. Apple said last week that Beijing had ordered it to remove WhatsApp and Threads from app stores in China.

Mr. Blinken and other U.S. officials have emphasized that American export controls, sanctions and other restrictions being imposed on Chinese tech companies apply to only a small fraction of the broader U.S.-China relationship. Elsewhere, trade is encouraged, they say.

In a report this week, the U.S.-China Business Council, a group of 270 American companies that do business in China, estimated that U.S. exports to China supported more than 900,000 American jobs in 2022, though goods exports fell in 2023 due to China’s lackluster economy, U.S. tariffs and other factors.

“It is important for us to remind U.S. lawmakers and those in influential positions that every state and congressional district in the U.S. maintains its own economic and trade relationship with China, and changes in U.S.-China trade policy should be considered very carefully,” said Craig Allen, the group’s president.

LEAST-DEVELOPED COUNTRIES (LDCS)

The workshop provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on the practical experiences and continuing challenges faced by LDCs in harnessing technological advances for their economic progress. It provided a platform for dialogue on the technological needs and priorities of LDCs, while allowing for an in-depth analysis of technology transfer programmes reported by developed members in furtherance of their commitments under Article 66.2 of the TRIPS Agreement .

Speaking at the opening session of the workshop, WTO Deputy Director-General Johanna Hill indicated that since 2003, when the TRIPS Council agreed on the transparency mechanism for the implementation of Article 66.2 of the TRIPS Agreement, developed members have submitted 318 reports detailing various actions taken or envisaged in terms of technology transfer.

She noted that the WTO Secretariat has been organizing this workshop since 2008 to help LDC members and observers analyze these reports and engage in direct dialogue with the reporting delegations. The reports and the discussions in the TRIPS Council offer a wealth of comprehensive information essential to carry out the necessary detailed analytical work.

Ambassador Pimchanok Pitfield of Thailand, Chair of the Council for TRIPS, further explained that these reports help members understand the range and character of technology transfer mechanisms and can help determine how best to shape programmes to meet LDC priority needs.

Stressing the importance of the connection created between the workshop and the TRIPS Council meeting, she encouraged participants, particularly LDC members, to use the platform to examine the reports in more detail than is possible at formal Council meetings.

Health, agriculture and the environment remained among the identified priority needs, as outlined by Ambassador Kadra Ahmed Hassan of Djibouti, coordinator of the WTO's LDC Group. She also pointed out that the programme was designed to actively involve all participants in the subsequent meeting of the TRIPS Council, thereby increasing the impact of the workshop on the Council's work in this area.
