Jaunt Coffee Roasters

Ethiopia Kafa Natural

jaunts coffee roasters

Blind Assessment

Deeply sweet, fruit-forward. Bing cherry, dark chocolate, marshmallow, cashew, lime zest in aroma and cup. Sweet structure with bright, juicy acidity; full, creamy-smooth mouthfeel. The cleanly fruit-toned finish shows undertones of cashew and dark chocolate.

Produced at Dehab Mesfin Farm, from selections of indigenous landrace varieties of Arabica long grown in the region, and processed by the natural method (dried in the whole fruit). Jaunt Coffee Roasters is a San Diego-based roaster and café with an extensive coffee and food menu. Visit www.jauntcoffee.com for more information.

Bottom Line

A vibrant, cleanly natural-processed Ethiopia cup, delicately fruit-driven, with an especially rich, creamy mouthfeel.

  • 5/5 Kate G. 2 years ago on Google Could not recommend this place more! The iced Panela latte (w/oat milk) was incredible! I believe his name is Paul, helped me decide what to order and it was perfect! He's also a ray of sunshine, so friendly and enthusiastic :) can't wait to come back to Jaunt! 10/10 cakes and pastries too! They sell out fast so come early! 7 people found this review helpful 👍
  • 4/5 Yo A. 1 year ago on Google • 333 reviews Somewhat disappointing experience. I stopped in on a Sunday to pick up some espresso roast beans for home use. I saw the nearby unit was preparing to ship many packaged bags of coffee, but when I went into the coffee shop itself, I met a barista who didn’t know what type of roast the espresso beans were — the same ones he was using to make the drinks. I was open to suggestions but he kept going to the kitchen in the back to ask someone else for the answers and recommendations. In the end I found out there were -no- bags of espresso beans left for sale at the coffee shop. For fun I tried the orange ginger cold brew, which was sweet. It was tasty, like a chocolate orange, but didn’t seem to have any ginger flavor. I might try again to get beans since the roaster is so well-rated, but no luck the first time. 3 people found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Daniel H. 3 years ago on Google Amazing coffee! I’ve been drinking nothing but Starbucks and now I’ve finally figured out how real coffee is supposed to taste like. They’re really nice people too. They had a “Pay-by-Post-It” board where if you were adversely financially affected by the pandemic, you could pay for your coffee with a post-it note which represented a payment someone else made before hand for that very reason. Very thoughtful and considerate. It was like a pay it forward type of thing. Overall my experience was great! 5/5 stars! 6 people found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Frank O. 9 months ago on Google • 360 reviews Great people, great beans, great vibe, and all around a great place. Super cool spot inside a commercial complex full of small eateries. The guys at the barista bar were really nice and welcoming. Prices were normal, if not slightly on the high side. Nice seating indoor and out and very clean! A bit tucked away but definitely worth the visit. Super cool “donate a coffee drink to someone that comes into the store in need” thing too. 1 person found this review helpful 👍
  • 4/5 Alyssa L. 2 years ago on Google Jaunt is a funky small cafe spot in what appears to be a renovated office park that is working to become a more active spot. The day I went, there was a metal music fair happening that made for some interesting background music! The food is very interesting and varied. It is a little overpriced for the portion sizes - I got one of the empanadas which was delicious but about the size of a dumpling. I got the Honey Bear drink which was delicious. The outdoor seating is plain with just a few patio tables under canopy tents, but it's a sweet spot and I hope to see that area grow and get more vitalized with community events, etc. 4 people found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Jennifer R. 2 years ago on Google Jaunt is one of my favorite coffee shops in San Diego. I love their bacon and egg empanada and Panela Latte (made with sugar cane). The service is always top notch too! They have outside tables you can sit at, or you can take your coffee to-go and walk around Miramar Lake. 3 people found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Noelle H. 10 months ago on Google • 97 reviews This is an amazing coffe spot! From the outside i wouldnt have guess that I was about to have a wonderful experiance, but that's what you can expect of you go here for a coffee. I got the Mexican mocha 😋. It was delicious. The ham and cheese croissant was also yummy. Very nice decore and clean restroom. 2 people found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Wayne L. 1 year ago on Google Great coffee in a fun spot next to a bunch of other interesting places. Really good coffee was quite surprised by it. Also happy they have some great empanadas as well. Coffee and empanadas great combo. Tried out a few pastries and the sausage breakfast burrito to complete my morning coffee run. Small burrito but the salsa and chipotle creme that came with it was good. Would stop by for coffee and empanadas again. 2 people found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Ahmad H. 2 years ago on Google My go to coffee shop and roaster, I usually get whole bean coffee bag different type each time but mainly the Ethiopian. They also have delicious empanadas, and other baked stuff. The Ethiopian coffee is amazing they have multiple varieties/notes. Also their house blend “130 Blend” is delicious. 2 people found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Frank T. 2 years ago on Google First time trying Jaunt Coffee Roasters. A little hidden but an outstanding find. Their coffee is excellent and they offer enough food options for a nice Sunday breakfast. I got a Cortado and my friend got an espresso. Both of us were pleased with our drinks. Will definitely be back 2 people found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Amanda S. 8 months ago on Google • 25 reviews Always visit this shop for a delicious Rosemary latte and empanada when I'm back in San Diego. Love the new space they have moved into that provides so much more seating and a chance to enjoy the beautiful atmosphere. Go enjoy your coffee journey! 1 person found this review helpful 👍
  • 2/5 Shabnam N. 8 months ago on Google • 12 reviews Mediocre at best. Not sure why there’s such a long line for this place. I visited on Sunday, Dec 10th. My flat white came out lukewarm. The s’more croissant was dry. My acai bowl wasn’t even blended, it was just scooped out. Ugh disappointed I spent $30 here. (Photo evidence that I was here) 1 person found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Yue Y. 10 months ago on Google • 8 reviews Very good beans, coffee and food. My girlfriend came to visit and we loved the ube cold brew. I order beans from here too and it’s very solid. The Mexico Oaxaca is a good daily driver medium roast. Their single origin light roasts are good too. I’d like to try the medium dark one sometime. 1 person found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Huynh Anh M. 9 months ago on Google • 3 reviews Jaunt Coffee is truly a remarkable destination for coffee enthusiasts who seek both exceptional flavors and a beautiful ambiance. With their specialty coffee, unique atmosphere, and excellent service, this coffee roastery is definitely worth exploring. I will certainly be returning to Jaunt Coffee in the future, and I highly recommend you visit if you have the opportunity. 1 person found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Priyanka C. 2 years ago on Google It gives that hole in the wall coffee shop feel. It’s at the end of a parking lot not in a complex. Coffee is good, their special latte options are great and seasonal. They have smoothies too. The decor is very refreshing with all the plants. Service was quick even though it was busy weekend morning. The picture is of cortado with a shot of hazelnut vanilla. My current favorite is cortado if you love little stronger coffee than a latte. 1 person found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 chelsea s. 2 years ago on Google I work right by this place, and for once I got to work early soooo I had to try. I got their spiced cold brew and their raspberry pop tart, and both are amazing!! The guys working the counter were super nice, the food selection has a lot to offer, and lots of drinks options. Each coffee is hand made, so just make sure to give yourself some time. Nothing tasty comes quickly. I will definitely be making a point to get to work earlier more often! 1 person found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 J S. 3 years ago on Google Great little hidden gem of a coffee shop, nice outdoor seating, terrific Flat White. Lots of breakfast snacks and breakfast burrito options. Picture attached is their raspberry “pop tart” and very good. 1 person found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Christiane 1 year ago on Google Been going to Jaunt pretty much since they opened & finally brought craft coffee to Mira Mesa. They have delicious empanadas that often sell out, yummy pastries, burritos and the coffee is so good! We often buy their whole beans by the bag to take home and love getting a cortado, iced Americano, and their funky lattes are a fun treat. One of the best aspects is their amazing supportive owner Jimmy, and team leader Christian. The whole staff are so friendly! 1 person found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Felipe B. 1 year ago on Google First time in Jaunt and already love this place! The espresso extremely well executed and the banana muffin was a delicious! The baristas are very friendly! I totally recommend this place! 1 person found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Emily D. 1 year ago on Google Amazing espresso with a dreamy milk texture and flavor. I loved all the fun, house-made syrups. Each one we tried (the rose vanilla, rosemary, cafe de olla and cinnamon cardamom) had an engaging and delicious flavor profile where the taste of both the coffee and the syrups shined. Oh yeah and the empanadas?! TO DIE FOR. The beef and sweet corn + basil just filled my soul. 1 person found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Amanda R. 1 year ago on Google Great coffee. Plan to take your time and enjoy. It felt like an event that was meant to be savored. We didn't have time to grab food but the empanadas looked SO good. Very friendly, nice indoor and outdoor seating. 1 person found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Josh O. 1 year ago on Google Wow, we didn’t expect the line to be out the door. We can see why! The empanadas (beef, chicken, and sweet corn and basil) were so good! Their açaí bowl was, we all really enjoyed how refreshing it was. We got a dirty ube latte and a Costa Rica Terrazu pourover (we had to grab a bag to go!). Highly recommend this place for your morning routine. 1 person found this review helpful 👍
  • 4/5 Bryant D. 3 years ago on Google Spiced cold brew coffee. Never had it you got to try it worth every cent. Good flavor. Little short on the sitting outside we're standing there with friends and chatting. 1 person found this review helpful 👍
  • 5/5 Sara K. 2 years ago on Google Best coffee I've ever had. And that isn't an exaggeration! Skip on buying pre-ground coffee beans at the store. Their roasted coffee to go is to die for. I've never had a bad experience here. They also have delicious acai bowls.
  • 5/5 Audrey N. 2 years ago on Google Love Jaunt Coffee Roasters! I live in North County but it’s always worth a trip for a sip. And they’re also on my way home from work. Service is stellar and the baristas are always so patient and helpful to answer my questions as an amateur enjoyer of coffee.
  • 5/5 C K. 3 years ago on Google Chicken empanada was tasty. Lavender latte was excellent!
  • 5/5 Ajay I. 2 years ago on Google Great place to grab some coffee and snacks and amazing customer service. Highly recommend!
  • 5/5 Earl L. 2 years ago on Google Friendly staff. Great coffee and the empanadas are amazing
  • 4/5 Arthur T. 1 year ago on Google Came by Jaunt Coffee Roasters, recommended by a friend. They are kind of tucked away in a corner. Nice spot, with indoor and outdoor seating. I opted for a cold brew. Standard. Parking in the area is easy to find.
  • 5/5 My L. 1 year ago on Google I love the staff, the people and the energy of this coffee shop. It’s in a plaza with little parking. There’s always a line. Two tables that seat 3 inside and more tables outside under the tent. Dress warm if you’re outside, it’s like a wind tunnel. For food they have breakfast burrito, açaí bowl and empanadas. They are known for their empanadas. We tried beef, chicken, sweet corn & basil. They have really good pastries too. We tried the coconut pandan croissant. Coconut flakes on top with creamy pandan inside. I was hesitant but I loved it. So yummy! So many choices for coffee. I asked for decaf and got a rosemary latte with a beautiful art work inside a take out cup that was still intact when I opened the lid.
  • 5/5 David Cruz (Typo K. 1 year ago on Google My new absolute favorite roaster in San Diego. Quality of the beans, the drinks, and the presentation are top notch. Staff are very friendly and enjoy and take pride in their work. Pourovers and espresso consistently taste great,
  • 4/5 Christopher S. 2 years ago on Google This place felt hidden and out of the way, located in a business park and next to a dirt quarry. So, not the greatest of views or nicest of scenery. Their Panela Latte was super sweet and very good, but the sugar hid the coffee flavor, which I like to taste even in a sweet latte. They had a rather extensive menu and some sweet and savory pastries, which unfortunately we weren't hungry enough to try. Overall, this place seems quaint and nice and gets good traffic for being so secluded. Would go back and would probably try something simpler next time.
  • 5/5 sammy g. 7 months ago on Google • 2 reviews I’m a coffee snob and this cappuccino is was great! Not too hot & perfectly made- delicious! The staff were friendly (which is becoming more and more uncommon lol) These people know what’s up! Great experience overall.

ABC Coffee Roasters – Moscow (RU)

  • August 12, 2019

Before I disembarked my plane in Moscow after an incredible adventure around Central Asia recently, the only time I ever set foot in Mother Russia before was during a short and regrettable visit to Kaliningrad a few years ago. Russia didn’t make a good impression on me then but I also knew that Moscow was a completely different animal and despite its aggressive politics, Russia is an incredibly diverse and exciting country to visit.

One of my missions during the three days that my friends and I spent in the Russian capital was to get under the city’s skin. To try and mix visiting the main tourist attractions with getting lost in the city’s back streets, tumbling into little bars and cafés, discovering its many galleries and meetings locals. After spending the whole morning marvelling at the beauty of the Kremlin and roaming around Red Square, I was heading back towards Arbat when I stumbled upon a beautiful coffee bar called ABC Coffee Roasters.

the_Coffeevine_Moscow_Abc_coffee_Roasters3

As I stood peering in from the outside, I already took mental stock of all the high-end equipment that was on display on the spacious U-shaped bar. From a white Slayer espresso machine to a small Ikawa roaster and a Goat Story dripper to several Brewista kettles, this bar had everything that you’d need to make great coffee. Now the only question was, would it live up to my expectations?

After taking a seat at the bar and ordering a flat white with a fresh pain au chocolat, I observed two skilful baristas moving around the space with a sense of purpose that told volumes about how serious these guys are about making sure that each coffee is perfectly poured. Founders Sergey Rubin and Sofia Rasner really wanted to create something completely unique to Russia that would raise the bar very high. An extensive history in hospitality and design allowed them to combine two significant skill sets to come up with the sleekest looking coffee bar East of Berlin.

“We wanted to create a simple space, a coffee shop that can be opened and adopted to any major city around the world. A space filled with natural raw materials, light and comforting music. The design is primarily JAPANDI style with unique authentic elements found only in the Russian region,” Sofia told me later. I personally thought it was a bit too clinical and could use a few more splashes of colour or plants here and there but maybe in a place where the winters are long and dark, people need cafés that are bright to get them through the day.

the_Coffeevine_Moscow_Abc_coffee_Roasters5

As I sipped on my expertly prepared flat white, I also took a moment to look around the space and noticed a wild mix of patrons ranging from locals and office workers to diplomats and tourists from all over the world. Moscow may already have a fair share of specialty coffee shops and chains offering a better than average cup but there is something incredibly rewarding about finding a coffee bar of this calibre and enjoying the expertise and passion for detail that the baristas put on display that day.

I also asked Sofia about their roasting business and where the roaster was currently located to which she said that they currently still roast in Siberia where the business was originally founded but that they plan to move their Probat roaster to Moscow in the coming months. Also when it comes to roasting, they are trying to set new standards by sourcing directly from a select group of farmers in Panama that they regularly visit and occasionally buying exclusive coffees from Ninety Plus that are roasted on the Ikawa in store.

the_Coffeevine_Moscow_Abc_coffee_Roasters1

While taking the last few sips of my coffee, I surveyed the menu with a bit more detail and discovered a range of signature drinks that include the Raf Osmanthus latte made with cream and a unique Asian flower that is dried, ground and mixed with raw sugar as well as the Taiga Latte named after the forest of the same name that consists of fragrant flavours such as pine cone jam, juniper infusion and is later topped with pine nuts.

Later, as I exited the café and continued my exploration of the Russian capital, I couldn’t help but make parallels between places like 4850 in Amsterdam, Tørnqvist in Hamburg and ABC Coffee Roasters who are, in their own right, pushing specialty coffee to new levels. I think every city needs a place like this and I am excited to see where ABC Coffee Roasters will pop up next.
