It's the Journey, Not the Destination—or Is It?

Culture influences our focus on the past, present, or future..

Current culture in the United States emphasizes a focus on the present . “It’s the journey, not the destination”. It’s not where you’ve been or where you’re going. What is important is where you are now.

Scripture in the Book of Matthew tells us to be like birds who don’t worry. Worrying cannot add a single hour to our lives. A popular song when I was young told us to “ live for today and don’t worry ‘bout tomorrow”. Recent research shows that mindfulness meditation , which focuses on the present, reduces depression .

But what if the destination is better than the journey? Arriving in Hawaii is much better than the plane trip there. And being in Hawaii is much better than the plane trip back. The plane trips are tolerable only by anticipating being in Hawaii or good memories of being there. Sometimes where you’ve been or where you’re going is better than where you are.

A focus on the present sometimes has negative consequences. In a study of over 72,000 social media users, a focus on the present was associated with depression. In contrast, those who focused on the future were less likely to be depressed. If the present is unpleasant, an ability to see past it can be helpful. Eleanor Roosevelt said that the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams .

Research shows that focusing on the past can also have mental health benefits. These include recovery from depression and trauma . Analyzing a past problem can provide a perspective on it. As George Santayana famously said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it".

Not everyone is as focused on the present as people in the United States are. People from East Asia have been found to be more focused on the past and future than people in the United States. This is because the past and future provide a context for the present. People in East Asia tend to be more interdependent than those in the United States. Relationships are highly valued. So, focusing on the past and future guides one to behave in a way that will maintain relationships.

A key reason that people in the United States are more focused on the present than people in East Asia is that they are also focused on themselves . People in the United States tend to be independent . They are not as concerned about how their present behavior will affect past or future relationships. But an extreme focus on the self— narcissism —can result in depression for oneself and for others .

A balance between the past, present, and future is needed. And a balance between the self and others. Where you’ve been, where you are, and where you are going are all important. And who you’re with.

More About Journey

What does  journey mean.

A journey is a trip, especially one to a faraway place that takes place over a long period of time.

The word trip can refer to any instance of traveling from one place to another, no matter how long or short it is. The word journey , though, typically implies a long trip—one that’s at least several hours, and perhaps several months or even years. It also often implies adventure—a journey might even be a quest . A journey may or may not have a planned destination other than whatever lies ahead.

The word is also commonly used in a figurative way to liken any lengthy process or progress to such a trip, as in Life is a journey, with many interesting detours.

Journey can also be used as a verb meaning to make a long trip, as in We must journey to the land beyond the mountains.

Example: My favorite books are about people who make epic journeys around the world.

Where does  journey come from?

The first records of the word journey come from around the 1200s. It comes from the Middle English word journee , meaning “day,” ultimately from unattested Vulgar Latin diurnāta , meaning “a day’s time” or “a day’s work.” In English, the meaning of the word journey originally meant something like “a day’s travel,” but eventually came to mean “a long trip.”

A journey can last a day but the word usually refers to longer trips. The word is sometimes preceded with the mode of transportation that’s used, as in The city is reachable only by a long train journey. Discussion of journeys often involves their destination or purpose. When people say, “It’s the journey , not the destination,” they mean that the significance and value of a journey is what happens along the way, from moment to moment, as opposed to the achievement of its ultimate goal.

The Profound Symbolism of The Journey: Exploring the Deeper Meanings Behind Life’s Adventures

Symbols are powerful tools that help us understand and navigate the world around us. They can represent complex ideas and emotions in a simple and universal way. From ancient cave paintings to modern-day logos, symbols have been used throughout history to communicate and convey meaning. Understanding symbolism can help us connect with our own inner wisdom and intuition.

Symbols have the ability to transcend language barriers and cultural differences. They speak to our subconscious mind, bypassing the rational thinking process and tapping into our emotions. For example, a red stop sign is universally understood as a symbol for danger or caution, regardless of language or culture. Similarly, a heart shape is universally recognized as a symbol for love and affection.

Symbols also have the power to evoke strong emotions and memories. The sight of a national flag can stir up feelings of patriotism and pride, while a wedding ring can symbolize love and commitment. By understanding the symbolism behind these objects, we can tap into the deeper meanings they hold and connect with our own experiences and emotions.

Key Takeaways

  • Symbolism plays a powerful role in our lives.
  • Archetypal symbols help us understand the collective unconscious.
  • The hero’s journey is a metaphor for life.
  • Overcoming obstacles and challenges is necessary for growth.
  • Dreams can reveal secrets of the unconscious.

Archetypal Symbols: Understanding the Collective Unconscious

Archetypes are universal symbols that are present in all cultures and societies. They represent fundamental human experiences and emotions. Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist, believed that these archetypes are part of the collective unconscious, a shared reservoir of knowledge and experiences that all humans inherit.

Some common archetypal symbols include the mother figure, representing nurturing and protection; the wise old man, representing wisdom and guidance; and the shadow, representing our hidden desires and fears. These archetypes can be found in myths, fairy tales, and religious texts from around the world.

Understanding archetypes can help us connect with our own unconscious and tap into our deepest desires and fears. By recognizing these universal symbols in our own lives, we can gain insight into our own motivations and behaviors. For example, recognizing the mother archetype in ourselves can help us understand our nurturing and caring tendencies, while recognizing the shadow archetype can help us confront and integrate our hidden fears and desires.

The Journey as a Metaphor for Life: Exploring the Hero’s Journey

The hero’s journey is a universal story structure that can be found in myths and legends from around the world. It represents the journey of self-discovery and transformation that we all go through in life. The hero’s journey is divided into several stages, each representing a different aspect of the journey.

The first stage of the hero’s journey is the call to adventure. This is the moment when we are called to leave our comfort zone and embark on a new journey. It can be scary and overwhelming, but it is also an opportunity for growth and transformation. Embracing the call to adventure can help us overcome our fears and discover our true potential.

The next stage of the hero’s journey is the threshold guardians. These are the obstacles and challenges that we encounter on our journey. They can represent our own fears and doubts, or external forces that try to hold us back. Overcoming threshold guardians is an important part of the hero’s journey, and it can help us build resilience and confidence.

The Call to Adventure: Embracing Change and Transformation

The call to adventure is the moment when we are called to leave our comfort zone and embark on a new journey. It can come in many forms, such as a job offer, a new relationship, or a personal challenge. The call to adventure often brings with it a sense of excitement and anticipation, but it can also be accompanied by fear and uncertainty.

Embracing the call to adventure requires us to step outside of our comfort zone and embrace change. It requires us to let go of what is familiar and safe, and venture into the unknown. This can be scary and overwhelming, but it is also an opportunity for growth and transformation.

By embracing the call to adventure, we open ourselves up to new experiences and opportunities. We allow ourselves to learn and grow, and we discover our true potential. Embracing the call to adventure is not always easy, but it is necessary if we want to live a fulfilling and meaningful life.

Threshold Guardians: Overcoming Obstacles and Challenges

Threshold guardians are the obstacles and challenges that we encounter on our journey. They can represent our own fears and doubts, or external forces that try to hold us back. These threshold guardians can take many forms, such as self-doubt, criticism from others, or unexpected setbacks.

Overcoming threshold guardians is an important part of the hero’s journey. It requires us to confront our fears and push through our limitations. It requires us to believe in ourselves and our abilities, even when faced with adversity.

By overcoming threshold guardians, we build resilience and confidence. We learn that we are capable of overcoming obstacles and achieving our goals. We discover our own strengths and abilities, and we become more confident in our ability to navigate the challenges of life.

Allies and Mentors: Finding Support and Guidance Along the Way

Allies and mentors are the people who help us on our journey. They can provide us with guidance, support, and wisdom. These allies and mentors can come in many forms, such as friends, family members, teachers, or even strangers.

Finding allies and mentors is essential for navigating the challenges of the hero’s journey. They can provide us with a different perspective, offer advice and support, and help us stay motivated and focused on our goals.

By finding allies and mentors, we gain access to their knowledge and experience. We learn from their mistakes and successes, and we benefit from their guidance and support. Finding allies and mentors can help us navigate the challenges of the hero’s journey with greater ease and confidence.

The Abyss: Facing Our Fears and Confronting the Shadow Self

The abyss is the moment of greatest challenge and transformation in the hero’s journey. It represents the moment when we must confront our deepest fears and face our shadow self. The shadow self is the part of ourselves that we often try to hide or deny, but it is an essential part of who we are.

Facing the abyss can be terrifying, as it requires us to confront our deepest fears and insecurities. It requires us to acknowledge and accept our shadow self, and to integrate it into our conscious awareness.

However, facing the abyss is also an opportunity for profound growth and transformation. By confronting our fears and embracing our shadow self, we can release old patterns and beliefs that no longer serve us. We can let go of limiting beliefs and behaviors, and step into our true power and potential.

The Return: Integrating Our Experiences and Sharing Our Wisdom

The return is the final stage of the hero’s journey, when we return to our ordinary lives with new knowledge and wisdom. It represents the integration of our experiences and the sharing of our wisdom with others.

The return is not just about returning to our old lives, but about integrating our experiences into who we have become. It is about bringing back the lessons and insights we have gained on our journey, and using them to create a more meaningful and purposeful life.

The return can help us find meaning and purpose in our lives. It can inspire others to embark on their own hero’s journey, and it can create a ripple effect of positive change in the world.

The Symbolic Language of Dreams: Unlocking the Secrets of the Unconscious

Dreams are a powerful source of symbolism and meaning. They can help us connect with our own unconscious and tap into our deepest desires and fears. Dreams often use symbols to communicate messages from our subconscious mind.

Understanding the symbolic language of dreams can help us gain insight into our own lives and experiences. By analyzing the symbols and themes in our dreams, we can uncover hidden meanings and messages. We can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our motivations, and we can use this knowledge to make positive changes in our lives.

Embracing the Journey and Finding Meaning in Life’s Adventures

The hero’s journey is a powerful metaphor for the journey of life. It represents the call to adventure, the overcoming of obstacles, the finding of allies and mentors, the facing of the abyss, and the integration of our experiences.

By understanding the power of symbolism and the hero’s journey, we can connect with our own inner wisdom and navigate the challenges of life with courage and resilience. We can embrace the call to adventure, overcome obstacles, find allies and mentors, face the abyss, and integrate our experiences. In doing so, we can find meaning and purpose in our lives, and inspire others to embark on their own hero’s journey.

Etymology

journey (n.)

c. 1200, "a defined course of traveling; one's path in life," from Old French journée "a day's length; day's work or travel" (12c.), from Vulgar Latin * diurnum "day," noun use of neuter of Latin diurnus "of one day" (from dies "day," from PIE root *dyeu- "to shine"). The French fem, suffix -ée , from Latin -ata , was joined to nouns in French to make nouns expressing the quantity contained in the original noun, and thus also relations of times ( soirée , matinée , année ) or objects produced.

Meaning "act of traveling by land or sea" is c. 1300. In Middle English it also meant "a day" (c. 1400); a day's work (mid-14c.); "distance traveled in one day" (mid-13c.), and as recently as Johnson (1755) the primary sense was still "the travel of a day." From the Vulgar Latin word also come Spanish jornada , Italian giornata .

mid-14c., "travel from one place to another," from Anglo-French journeyer , Old French journoiier "work by day; go, walk, travel," from journée "a day's work or travel" (see journey (n.)). Related: Journeyed ; journeying .

SABBATH DAY’s JOURNEY ( σαββάτον ὁδός , sabbath journey, sabbath day’s journey ). A measure of distance, somewhat similar to the Egyp. unit of 1000 double steps, which served as the limit of travel on the sabbath. The phrase became a common expression for a relatively short distance.

The distance has been generally reckoned as 2000 cubits or approximately 2/3 of a m. Acts 1:12 , the only instance of its occurrence in the Bible, specifies its length as the distance from Mt. Olivet to Jerusalem. (From the Eastern gate of Jerusalem to the present site of the Church of the Ascension on Mt. Olivet is slightly over 1/2 m.)

It is assumed that the regulation had its origin in the Mosaic period in the injunction to the Israelite not to leave camp to collect manna on the sabbath ( Exod 16:29 ). In the Jerusalem Targ. this command reads: “Let no man go walking from the place beyond 2000 cubits on the seventh day.” There are other regulations to which appeal is made in an effort to locate the origin of this practice or precept. One is the provision that the area belonging to the Levitical cities included land which extended from the wall 2000 cubits on every side ( Num 35:5 ). Another is the supposed distance that separated the Ark and the people both on the march and at camp ( Josh 3:4 ). As far as this specific regulation is concerned, it applied only to leaving the city, the prescribed distance being measured from the city gate. Within the city proper, no matter how large it might be, there was no such limitation.

The original intent of the provision was to insure a quiet, leisurely Sabbath and to keep it from becoming a harried and busy day ( Exod 16:29 ). It was also designed to keep the Israelitish worshiper in the area of the center of his worship. The motive was noble but, unfortunately, it resulted in a barren legalism. As a consequence, there were casuistic schemes to circumvent it. It did, however, permit a legitimate exception. If one were caught at a distance on a journey, he might travel to the nearest shelter for safety. But there were deliberate schemes to by-pass the rule. One such scheme was to select a tree or a stone at a distance, place some food there, and declare: “Let this be my residence.”

Behind the Meaning of “Wheel in the Sky,” by Journey

by Alex Hopper May 14, 2022, 10:03 am

“Wheel in the Sky” appeared on Journey’s fourth record, Infinity —the first album to feature frontman Steve Perry on vocals. The anthemic track, along with the rest of the album, pushed the band into the limelight, acting as a predecessor to decades of high-pulsing rock classics.

Videos by American Songwriter

Meaning Behind the Lyrics

According to Journey’s Time3 compilation, “Wheel in the Sky” began as a yearning poem written by bassist Ross Valory’s wife, Diane. Originally titled, “Wheels In My Mind,” Valory’s first iteration spoke about the isolation of missing her husband while he was away. The poem was then rewritten by former lead vocalist Robert Fleischman to reflect the grind of life on the road as a rock band.

The lyrics are philosophical to boot, speaking about a man desperate to get home, the fear of losing a significant other, and the ever-turning wheels of time.

Haven’t been home in a year or more I hope she holds on a little longer Sent a letter on a long summer day Made of silver, not of clay I’ve been runnin’ down this dusty road

While Fleischman carved out the lyrics, Perry eventually recorded the track after joining the group. In a 2014 interview with Louder , Perry recalls experiencing an intense tour schedule in 1978 – completing a 298 show run and “not coming home for almost a year.” That’s enough to make anyone sympathize with the lyrics I’ve been trying to make it home, I can’t take this very much longer.

While the verses take a more oblique viewpoint, the chorus paints a straightforward metaphor about the unstoppable nature of time.

Ooh, the wheel in the sky keeps on turnin’ I don’t know where I’ll be tomorrow Wheel in the sky keeps on turnin’

Guitarist Neal Schon’s acoustic melody for “Wheel in the Sky” was transformed into the arena-rock anthem we know it as today with the help of Roy Thomas Baker – a famed English producer whose other credits include the likes of the incomparable “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

“What Roy gave us was the opportunity to try different textures and ideas,” Perry told the outlet. “But the foundational aspect of the songs and the arrangements were done. Roy really gave us a direction, and from there the band found itself.”

The band released three modestly selling albums before Perry. Journey , Look Into The Future, and Next all had more of a prog-rock sound before Perry’s wailing vocals came into the mix. Perry brought with him concise songs that worked in a singles market, complete with catchy, unforgettable hooks. Not coincidentally, “Wheel in the Sky” became the first Journey song to chart in the Hot 100.

“I remember clearly “Wheel In The Sky” being the first single,” Perry recalled. “Neal [Schon] and I went to this pizza place, and I went over to the jukebox and saw a Wheel In the Sky vinyl 45 in the machine – an ecstatic feeling.

He continued: “I didn’t tell Neal, I just put two quarters in, pushed the button, and sat down, and the song started. Neal looked at me and started laughing. It was a monumental moment. Back then if you were started to show up in jukeboxes it was a sign that you might be finally starting to happen.”

  • Spiritual Meaning Of Seeing An Owl During The Day

By: Author Bulgarea Candin

Posted on Last updated: April 27, 2024

Imagine walking through a tranquil forest or even your own backyard, when suddenly, against the odds of nature, you encounter an owl serenely observing the world in the full light of day.

This moment, unexpected and rare, holds an otherworldly beauty and a profound spiritual significance.

Owls, creatures of majestic silence and deep wisdom, are traditionally nocturnal, and their appearance during daylight hours is as enchanting as it is thought-provoking.

Such encounters invite us on a reflective journey to uncover the layers of meaning behind this anomaly.

They urge us to consider the owl not just as an animal, but as a symbol of intuition, transformation, and insight, offering a unique lens through which to view our lives and our spiritual path.

Spiritual Meaning Of Seeing An Owl During The Day

In many cultures, owls are revered as keepers of wisdom and guardians of the unseen realms, their presence a sign of profound insight and mystic knowledge.

When these nocturnal creatures make their appearance under the sun, it’s as though they bridge the gap between the known and the unknown, the light and the shadow, guiding us towards a greater understanding of our inner truths and the mysteries that surround us.

This unexpected encounter with a daylight owl invites us to pause and reflect, to look beyond the surface of our daily lives and to contemplate the deeper spiritual messages being offered.

Spiritual Meaning Of Seeing An Owl During The Day

The owl’s presence during the day challenges the conventional boundaries between night and day, the seen and unseen, reminding us that wisdom and insight can come to us in the most unexpected ways and times.

Furthermore, the sighting of an owl in daylight can be seen as a sign of transition and transformation. Owls, with their keen vision and silent flight, are master navigators of the night, representing an ability to see through deception and illusion to the truth that lies beneath.

When we encounter these majestic birds in the light of day, it symbolizes a call to awaken, to shed light on the shadows we have ignored and to face the changes that are unfolding in our own lives with courage and clarity.

This symbolic encounter also speaks to the power of solitude and introspection.

Owls are often solitary creatures, and their appearance during the day serves as a reminder of the strength found in quietude and the importance of taking time for personal reflection.

Spiritual Meaning Of Seeing An Owl During The Day

The spiritual meaning of seeing an owl during the day also encompasses the theme of synchronicity and the interconnectedness of all things.

This rare event may appear as a simple coincidence, but upon closer examination, it reveals itself as a meaningful alignment, a message tailored specifically for us at that moment in our lives.

10 Ways To Open Your Third Eye Fast

It’s a reminder that the universe communicates with us in myriad ways, and that by paying attention to the signs and symbols that appear on our journey, we can align more closely with our destiny and the universal energies that guide us.

The Silent Observer: Lessons in Mindfulness and Presence

Spiritual Meaning Of Seeing An Owl During The Day

This majestic bird, with its deep, penetrating gaze, embodies the essence of being truly present, undisturbed by the noise of the world.

When we are lucky enough to witness such a creature in the light of day, it’s as though we are being directly invited to slow down and attune ourselves more deeply to the moment.

Mindfulness, the art of being fully present and engaged with whatever we are doing at the moment, without judgment or distraction, is mirrored in the way an owl surveys its surroundings.

It does not rush or become flustered; instead, it sits quietly, observing and taking in every detail.

This teaches us the value of pausing, even amidst the chaos of our daily routines, to truly observe and listen—to the people we are with, the natural world around us, and importantly, to our own inner experiences.

Spiritual Meaning Of Seeing An Owl During The Day

These details, which we might otherwise overlook, become sources of joy and wonder. Furthermore, this practice allows us to become more aware of our thoughts and emotions, observing them without getting caught up in their narrative.

Just as an owl watches without interfering, we learn to witness our mental and emotional states without immediate reaction, creating space for clarity and understanding.

This cultivation of presence and mindfulness, inspired by the owl’s silent vigil, extends into our interactions with others.

In becoming silent observers, we develop a deeper empathy and connection, able to truly listen and engage with people without the constant urge to respond or judge.

Spiritual Meaning Of Seeing An Owl During The Day

Furthermore, the practice of mindfulness, as exemplified by the owl during the day, encourages us to face life’s challenges with a greater sense of calm and equanimity.

Just as the owl does not shy away from the daylight, stepping out of its comfort zone, we too can learn to approach uncomfortable or difficult situations with a sense of stillness and observation, rather than immediate reaction.

This approach can transform our experience of stress, anxiety, and fear, offering a path through which we can navigate the complexities of life with grace and resilience.

Guardian of Secrets: Unlocking the Mysteries Within

Spiritual Meaning Of Seeing An Owl During The Day

This mystical creature, steeped in symbolism and lore, becomes a catalyst for a deep and introspective voyage into the self, urging us to peel back the layers of our own existence to uncover the truths that lie beneath.

This journey inward is not always an easy one, for it requires us to confront aspects of ourselves that we may have chosen to ignore or hide away—our shadows.

The owl, with its silent flight and penetrating gaze, symbolizes the ability to traverse the darkness and bring light to the unseen.

Spiritual Meaning Of Seeing An Owl During The Day

These shadows, though often perceived as negative, hold the key to our complete self-understanding and growth.

By acknowledging and integrating these parts of ourselves, we unlock the door to healing and transformation.

Furthermore, the owl’s emergence in the light of day beckons us to explore the mysteries that lie within, to ask the deeper questions of who we are and what our purpose might be.

It prompts an exploration of our inner world, our values, dreams, and aspirations.

Spiritual Meaning Of Seeing An Owl During The Day

The owl, in its wisdom, teaches us that within the quietude of self-exploration, we can hear the whispers of our true calling and begin to align more closely with our authentic selves.

In addition to personal revelations, the owl’s presence during daylight may also signify the uncovering of universal truths and the interconnectedness of life.

It reminds us that just as it moves silently through the world, observing and interacting without disturbing the delicate balance of nature, we too are part of a larger whole.

This realization fosters a sense of responsibility and stewardship, encouraging us to live in harmony with the world around us and to seek ways in which we can contribute positively to the collective.

Spiritual Meaning Of Seeing An Owl During The Day

This act of unlocking is not a singular event but a continuous process of inquiry, reflection, and growth.

It is a journey that requires courage, honesty, and openness, as we venture into the unknown territories of our being.

Yet, the rewards of this inward exploration are immeasurable, leading to a deeper understanding of self, a heightened sense of purpose, and a profound connection to the universe.

Messengers of the Divine: Heeding the Call to Spiritual Awakening

The sighting of an owl during the broad light of day breaks through the ordinary rhythm of our lives like a beacon, illuminating a path less traveled—the path to spiritual awakening.

Spiritual Meaning Of Seeing An Owl During The Day

The owl, revered across cultures and ages for its deep connection to wisdom and the nocturnal realm, becomes a messenger when it ventures into daylight, signifying the dissolution of boundaries between the tangible and the ethereal, the mundane and the sacred.

This encounter is far from coincidental; it is charged with significance, urging us to pause and reflect on our spiritual journey.

It beckons us to explore the deeper aspects of our existence, to question the nature of reality and our place within it.

The owl’s presence is a call to awaken—to shed the layers of illusion that cloud our perception and to see the world, and ourselves, with renewed clarity.

It invites us to open our hearts and minds to the possibility of a life enriched by a sense of connection to something greater than ourselves, to cultivate a relationship with the divine spark that resides within each of us and permeates the universe.

Spiritual Meaning Of Seeing An Owl During The Day

This process of awakening is deeply personal and unique to each individual, yet it is also universal, reflecting the collective yearning for meaning, purpose, and connection.

The owl, as a messenger of the divine, encourages us to trust in this process, to follow the intuitive nudges that guide us towards self-discovery and enlightenment.

Engaging with the spiritual messages that the owl brings can transform our perspective on life.

It can lead us to recognize the interconnectedness of all things, to appreciate the beauty and sanctity of the natural world, and to understand our role as stewards of the Earth.

This newfound awareness can inspire us to live more consciously, to make choices that reflect our values and contribute to the greater good.

It challenges us to rise above the superficial concerns of the ego and to align our actions with higher principles—love, compassion, and service.

Spiritual Meaning Of Seeing An Owl During The Day

It can be found in simple moments of connection, in the beauty of a sunset, in the laughter of a child, in the silence of a starry night.

By attuning ourselves to these moments, by cultivating a sense of wonder and gratitude, we open ourselves to a more profound experience of life, filled with joy, meaning, and a sense of belonging to the vast, mysterious cosmos.

In essence, the daytime sighting of an owl is a gift, a divine invitation to awaken to the fullness of our spiritual potential.

It calls us to explore the depths of our being, to connect with the universal truths that bind us, and to live a life that reflects the light of our innermost essence.

By heeding this call, we step into a more expansive and luminous reality, where every moment is an opportunity to encounter the divine, to grow, and to contribute to the unfolding of a more conscious, compassionate world.

The Houses of Parliament and over Westminster Bridge in London with the sunsetting in the background.

Rwanda bill: what does the latest delay mean?

Flights have been pushed back to summer after the House of Lords spoke out for Afghans and refugees – here’s what to expect over the coming weeks

Rishi Sunak’s plan to fly people seeking asylum to Rwanda this spring appears to have been put back to the summer after House of Lords insisted on changes to the scheme .

On Thursday the prime minister’s spokesperson said the Lords were responsible for any delay after attaching unwanted amendments to the deportation bill.

Pressed on whether spring was still the target, the spokesperson told reporters: “I’m not going to get ahead of the bill passing, which obviously we’ve seen again last night has continued to be held up.”

Below, we examine what the impact will be on the scheme and what will happen next.

Where does the latest delay leave the Rwanda deportation bill?

The bill, with two Lords amendments attached, still has to be voted through both houses before it can be given royal assent after being passed between them three times. In parliamentary jargon, it is stuck in “ping pong”.

It will be voted upon by MPs on Monday before moving to the Lords later that day.

The government says it will resist pressure to offer a compromise to peers, who want to ensure that it allows an independent committee to decide whether Rwanda is a safe country, and exempts Afghans who helped British troops from deportation to Rwanda.

What is ‘ping pong’?

The process by which proposed new laws are sent back and forth between the Houses of Parliament – Commons and Lords – if they do not agree on the wording of a bill.

A coalition of cross-bench, Tory rebel and opposition peers are refusing to back down over two issues – the rights of Afghans and scrutiny of the treatment of refugees in east Africa.

Will the bill pass?

The Lords could hold out for more rounds of ping pong – many peers remain furious with the proposed bill.

Usually there is some form of compromise or the Lords give way to the elected chamber. But in theory it could continue until “double insistence” takes place – both sides refuse to back down over an amendment – and then the bill is lost.

This is extremely rare but not without precedent – it happened to the European Parliamentary Elections Bill 1997–98. Government sources believe the Rwanda bill will go through on Monday.

What happens if and when the bill goes through?

It will be a minor political triumph which Sunak is expected to grab with both hands. Expect a press conference or a Downing Street lectern.

When will planes take off for Rwanda?

Home Office sources say that flights are unlikely to take off before late June, more likely July.

Why the delays?

Asylum seekers are expected to challenge their removal on a case-by-case basis, which could lead to their immediate removal from a flight.

The bill allows challenges if a detainee faces a “real, imminent and foreseeable risk of serious irreversible harm if removed to Rwanda”.

People suffering serious mental or physical conditions, victims of torture and anyone who is shown to be suicidal could launch a challenge on these grounds.

Some delays could be due to the appeals process. Many people subject to removal will have eight days to lodge claims and they will need to present compelling evidence to support their case.

Where the Home Office refused the claim without a right to appeal, permission to appeal will need to be obtained within 23 working days.

What other issues have been expressed about deportations?

Lawyers representing asylum seekers are deeply concerned that there will be a risk of suicide among those told they are being removed to Rwanda.

Unions representing border guards have expressed concern that some claimants may resort to attacking their members in order to avoid being deported.

The ISU union – which represents frontline Border Force and immigration workers – said its members were concerned about potential physical resistance from people being taken into detention for Rwanda flights, and on the plane itself.

Lucy Moreton, an ISU professional officer, said: “Given the undertaking that we will not send anyone with a criminal record to Rwanda, and given the high stakes involved, there is serious concern that migrants may take to assaulting staff as a way to avoid removal.”

Any other obstacles before a flight takes off?

Ministers have not confirmed if they have secured the planes which can deport large numbers of people.

Although the Home Office says there are many options on the table, officials have said they are struggling to confirm airlines willing to facilitate mass deportations.

The Times reported on Tuesday that AirTanker, an aviation company that provides a fleet of 14 airbuses to the RAF to fuel and transport the military, is being lined up to take people to Rwanda.

AirTanker – whose involvement in talks over the Rwanda plan was revealed by the Guardian – declined to comment.

exodus in Context

“Experts link lower rents to a possible drop in demand after population losses during a recent exodus from parts of Southern California. As the state’s population has stagnated, some believe demand may cool and dampen rent growth.” — Anthony de Leon, The Los Angeles Times , 14 Mar. 2024

Did You Know?

The Biblical book of Exodus describes the departure of the Israelites from Egypt, so it's no surprise that the word exodus , uncapitalized, has come to refer more generally to any mass departure. Exodus was adopted into English (via Latin) from the Greek word Exodos , which literally means “the road out.” Exodos was formed by combining the prefix ex- , meaning “out of,” and hodos , meaning “road” or “way.” Indeed, many roads led out of hodos into English; other hodos descendants include episode , method , odometer , and period . While exodus is occasionally encountered in reference to an individual’s leaving (e.g., “his/her/their exodus”), such usage is likely to raise the eyebrows of editors who feel it should only refer to the departure en masse of a large group of people, as when novelist Nnedi Okorafor writes in her science fiction novel Lagoon (2015): “Everyone was trying to get somewhere, be it a church, a bar, home or out of Lagos. Then there was the exodus of people … to the parts of the city that had the least chance of flooding if the water rose too high.”
