Jury Hears Ex-Politician on Trial for Murder Amassed Photos, ID Records About Slain Vegas Reporter

A Nevada jury heard testimony that Las Vegas police found hundreds of photos of a slain investigative journalist’s home and neighborhood, along with screen shots of his identification records, on the cellphone and computer of a Democratic politician accused of killing him in September 2022

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Hundreds of photos of a slain investigative journalist's home and neighborhood were found on the cellphone and computer of a local Democratic politician accused of “lying in wait” and killing the reporter, who had written several articles critical of the official, a Nevada jury was told Monday.

Other photos taken from Robert Telles' devices included an image of a single gray athletic shoe with a distinctive black pattern and a shot of Telles' work computer at the Clark County Public Administrator and Guardian office with results of internet searches through a password-protected site that retrieved slain reporter Jeff German’s name, home address, vehicle registration and date of birth.

Prosecutor Christopher Hamner noted for jurors that photo was taken Aug. 23, 2022 — less than two weeks before German was slashed and stabbed to death in a side yard of his home.

“This image came out of Mr. Telles' phone?” Hamner asked Matthew Hovanec, a Las Vegas digital forensics supervisor who testified Monday about “extracting” the data from Telles’ devices.

“It did,” Hovanec responded.

Detective Justine Gatus, the primary Las Vegas police homicide investigator of German's death, was the main — and final — witness called Monday as prosecutors rested their case after four days of testimony from more than two dozen witnesses.

Telles has pleaded not guilty to murder and faces the possibility of life in prison if the jury finds him guilty. Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty.

Telles insists he didn’t kill German and was framed for the crime. He intends to testify, defense lawyer Robert Draskovich said Monday, and is expected to take the witness stand to cap his own defense case, possibly Tuesday afternoon.

Gatus cited Las Vegas Review-Journal articles about Telles and the county office that German wrote, published in May and June 2022, about a county office in turmoil .

“They weren't flattering,” the detective observed.

Social media posts by Telles at the same time derided German and the articles as false depictions of his efforts to fight corruption amid a political and social “old guard” real estate network.

Gatus testified that the gray sneaker with a Nike logo and four black marks on the sole was “identical” to one jurors saw earlier in neighbors’ security camera images of a figure wearing orange who slipped into a side yard of German’s home where German was later found dead on Labor Day weekend 2022.

Neither an orange shirt nor a murder weapon was entered as evidence in the case. But one of those shoes, cut to pieces and bearing spots of blood from an unidentified source, was found in plastic shopping bag in Telles' home following his arrest.

German's killing in September 2022 , at age 69, made him the the only reporter killed in the U.S. among 69 news media workers killed worldwide that year, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists . German spent 44 years covering Las Vegas mobsters and public officials at the Las Vegas Sun and then at the rival Review-Journal.

About 10 of his family members and friends have attended each day of Telles' trial, but have not spoken publicly about the killing. They declined as a group on Monday to comment.

Jurors last week heard from forensic scientists who said Telles’ DNA was found beneath German’s fingernails, and saw security video of the suspect driving through German’s neighborhood.

2 tourists killed in hit-and-run on Fremont Street in Las Vegas, police say

LAS VEGAS ( KVVU /Gray News) – Two people were killed in a hit-and-run on Fremont Street in Las Vegas, police said.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the crash happened around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators found that the couple were in a crosswalk, but they were not walking in accordance with the signal. The two people were hit by a red SUV, which did have a green light but did not yield to the people in the roadway.

Witnesses told police the vehicle continued driving after hitting the couple. Investigators believe the driver was impaired at the time of the crash.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman died later at the hospital.

Police said thanks to surveillance cameras throughout the area, they were able to quickly track down the red SUV and arrest the driver. She was identified as 28-year-old Mykael Terrell, who is an area resident.

Terrell is facing DUI and hit-and-run charges.

Officials said the two people who died at the scene were tourists. The 44-year-old man was from Monument, Minnesota, and the 51-year-old woman was from Hobbs, New Mexico.

Suspect in deadly Las Vegas stabbings attacked to 'let the anger out': Arrest report

The suspect, 32-year-old Yoni Barrios, is in custody. No motive is known.

The suspect in the stabbing spree that left two dead and six others injured allegedly stabbed his victims so he could "let the anger out," according to an arrest report.

The suspect, who had recently arrived in Las Vegas, chose his targets at random, a source told ABC News.

The attacks started outside a Las Vegas casino midday Thursday. Detectives believe there was an exchange of some sort between the suspect and the first victim, Maris Mareen DiGiovanni, a street performer, prior to the stabbings, the source said.

Surveillance footage captured the suspect, 32-year-old Yoni Barrios, briefly going inside the Wynn Casino, before he approached a group of performers, including DiGiovanni, who were standing outside nearby, according to an arrest report.

He reportedly told detectives he asked to take a picture with them, removing a black carbon knife from a suitcase and telling the women he was a chef, according to the arrest report.

In interviews with police, the surviving performers said he made them feel uncomfortable, according to the police report. Barrios reportedly told police he thought they were laughing at them and making fun of his clothing. He became angry and stabbed the first victim in the chest, according to the report.

"Barrios started running and looking for groups of people so he could 'let the anger out,'" the arrest report stated.

At one point, a victim who was stabbed told police that Barrios said "sorry man" as he attacked him, according to the report.

Barrios allegedly told police that he knew none of the victims and was hoping police would shoot him, the arrest report said.

Barrios was taken into custody within a "matter of minutes" by a security guard and police officer after fleeing the scene, police said. A large kitchen knife used in the incident was recovered from the scene, police said.

He was booked on two counts of open murder with a deadly weapon and six counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, police said.

Barrios was ordered held without bail during a court appearance Friday afternoon and is scheduled to next appear in court on Tuesday. Attorney information was not immediately available.

Police believe Barrios acted alone, adding that a motive is unknown.

During questioning by detectives, the suspect allegedly confessed and said he was sorry and acknowledged what he did was wrong, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation. He allegedly did not have a coherent explanation, making it seem that he had snapped, the official said.

Detectives are also seeing if multiple phones the suspect had on him might reveal information about the attack or the suspect's recent activities, the official said.

The victims include both locals and tourists, Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said during a press briefing Thursday.

Three victims were in critical condition and another three in stable condition Thursday night, police said.

The initial stabbing, which took place around 11:40 a.m. local time, occurred on the sidewalk along Las Vegas Boulevard, Deputy Chief James LaRochelle told reporters.

Video surveillance showed the suspect stab several victims, including DiGiovanni, according to the arrest report. The suspect then ran south along the sidewalk, where he stabbed victim Brent Hallet in the back, killing him, according to the arrest report.

The suspect continued running south, stabbing two more victims, before turning east along Sands Avenue, where he stabbed two more victims, according to the report.

Hallet was pronounced dead at the scene, and DiGiovanni died after being transported to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, according to the arrest report.

The Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner identified the two people who died as Hallett, 47, and DiGiovanni, 30, both of Las Vegas.

Hallett died from a stab wound to the back and DiGiovanni died from a stab wound to the chest, the office said Friday, ruling the manner of death for both victims homicide.

Barrios is believed to be from Guatemala and had traveled through Mexico and was in California prior to arriving in Las Vegas, according to the law enforcement source. Authorities are investigating whether he was in the U.S. legally, the source said.

Barrios had arrived in Las Vegas approximately two days before the attack, according to the arrest report.

He arrived on the Strip Thursday morning, toting a suitcase that included his knives and dressed in what appeared to be a chef's uniform, according to the arrest report. In an interview with detectives, Barrios reportedly said he asked chauffeurs at Wynn for a ride back to California. He then walked into the hotel and asked a janitor about job opportunities and to contact Immigration and Customs Enforcement for him "so he could return home to Guatemala," according to the report.

He reportedly told a security guard he was attempting to sell his knives so he could get money to return to Guatemala, to which the security guard at the casino allegedly responded: go jump in front of a train, according to the report.

Barrios allegedly has a criminal history in California, including driving under the influence and a domestic violence episode, but nothing that would have made a noticeable risk to the community, the source said.

He is believed to have had a wife and children in California and went to Vegas to stay with a male friend, the source said. Detectives are investigating what that relationship was and seeking out other acquaintances, according to the source.

Picture-taking showgirls among victims in deadly Vegas stabbing, witness says

Las Vegas Metro Police Department said a person was taken into custody Thursday.

WABC logo

LAS VEGAS -- Two people have died and at least six others were injured on Thursday in what Las Vegas police called a series of unprovoked stabbings in the town's popular tourism center.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said its officers responded to a stabbing with multiple victims in front of a casino in the 3100 block of South Las Vegas Boulevard at about 11:42 a.m.

This block comprises notable casino properties such as Resorts World Las Vegas, the Wynn, and Encore Las Vegas, as well as a nearby shopping strip.

LVMPD initially tweeted that at least six victims were immediately located, with one declared dead.

The police department later tweeted that other victims were being transported to area hospitals with an unknown extent of injuries.

In a later briefing with reporters, LVMPD raised the death toll to two people and the number of injured to six, three of whom are in critical condition. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second died at University Medical Center.

A suspect was taken into custody, and police shut down roadways to comb for evidence.

Police said the suspect, identified late Thursday as 32-year-old Yoni Barrios, had a significant amount of blood on his sleeves at the time of the arrest.

Police have not yet identified a motive, but they believe a large kitchen knife was used to carry out the attacks. They added that the scene is secure and there is no further danger to the public.

Stabbings committed over half block of Strip, police say

In a mid-afternoon briefing at LVMPD headquarters, police leadership illustrated what appeared to be a trail of crime on sidewalks typically filled with both tourists and local, outdoor entertainers trying to earn money.

The initial stabbing was unprovoked and happened on the sidewalk next to the Wynn hotel, Deputy Chief James LaRochelle said.

The suspect, whom LaRochelle described as someone who recently visited town, continued southbound, leaving behind five additional victims at different points.

The man then headed off the Strip along a street next to the Palazzo hotel-casino, where another victim was wounded, LaRochelle said. This took place all while he was followed by concerned citizens.

The rampage went on until a security guard and a police officer took the man into custody in a matter of minutes next to the Palazzo's parking garage entrance, Sheriff Joe Lombardo added.

Police mentioned the suspect identified himself verbally.

The police department also presented a video showing the man fleeing amid the chaos he allegedly caused.

Photo-taking 'showgirls' among victims, bystanders say

The sheriff noted that the victims were a combination of Las Vegas locals and tourists.

Witnesses told Las Vegas TV stations that the stabbings occurred in multiple locations, and some of the victims appeared to be showgirls who take pictures with tourists on the Strip.

Pierre Fandrich told KTNV that he did not see the stabbing suspect as he was walking along the Strip. But he said he thought he heard "three or four showgirls laughing," although it turned out to be screaming.

Fandrich said he saw "a lot of blood" as one woman ran across the bridge, one was on the ground, and another had a stab wound on her back as she tried to help the fallen woman.

Fandrich also told KTNV that he thought one of the victims fell from the bridge because there was so much blood on the ground.

Mass stabbings come days after grim anniversary

The mass crime event comes five days removed from the area marking five years since a gunman shot at country music festivalgoers from a high-rise hotel on Oct. 1, 2017.

The incident left 58 people dead, marking it as the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

Inside the Case of Las Vegas Reporter’s Fatal Stabbing. Why Prosecutors Say a Local Politician Killed Him

Jeff German had published a set of stories exposing turmoil within the public administrator’s office. On Sept. 3, 2022, the reporter was found dead outside his home

A Las Vegas trial in which prosecutors claim the 2022 killing of a local reporter was committed by an elected official he was investigating is now underway, with opening statements starting Wednesday, Aug. 14.

Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German was found stabbed to death outside his home Sept. 3, 2022.

At the time the 69-year-old — a venerable voice in Sin City media with a four-decade journalism career focused on local politics and crime — was pursuing a story investigating then-Clark County Public Administrator Robert Telles , a Democrat who had just lost his reelection bid, following German’s earlier set of stories alleging Telles had an inappropriate relationship with a staffer.

In an article that May, German described Telles’s office as “mired in turmoil and internal dissension over the past two years, with allegations of emotional stress, bullying and favoritism leading to secret videotaping of the boss and a co-worker outside the office.”

Shortly after German's death, Thomas Pitaro likened his friend to “a pit bull,” telling PEOPLE in an interview that the reporter “wasn't afraid to take on big issues in Las Vegas.”

“If he bit on a story, he didn't let go of it until he got the whole damn thing,” he added.

In the days after German’s killing, police released surveillance video of a person dressed in a reflective orange jacket and wide-brimmed straw hat, carrying a duffle bag.

Investigators recovered a matching straw hat matching, as well as a pair of shoes the suspect was described as wearing, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Captain Dori Koren said at a press conference at the time.

“There is apparent blood on the shoes and the shoes were cut in a manner to try and destroy evidence,” Koren told reporters, adding that the hat was “also cut in a manner that was likely to destroy the evidence.”

Police believed the suspect had taken off in a distinctive maroon GMC Yukon Denali — complete with chrome handles, a sunroof and a luggage rack.

At trial, prosecutors plan to present DNA evidence collected from under the reporter’s fingernails, which they allege matches that of Telles, per the AP.

“It's surreal — I never saw it coming,” Ozzie Fumo, a defense attorney who was friends with both men, told PEOPLE in 2022 . “If I would've thought in any way that [Telles] would've been capable of doing something like this, of course, I would've warned Jeff. It's shocking. I guess I didn't know Robert as well as I thought.”

Telles has pleaded not guilty to murder, claiming he was framed in a botched police investigation, per the AP.

In an email to PEOPLE Wednesday, his defense lawyer, Robert Draskovich said he “maintains his innocence and wants to tell his story to the jury.”

If convicted, Telles faces a life sentence.

Telles’s frustration with German’s reporting was well-documented on social media, PEOPLE previously reported .

That June, Telles wrote in a Tweet that has since been deleted: "*Wife hears rustling in the trash* Her: 'Honey, is there a wild animal in the trash?' Me: 'No, dear. Looks like it's @JGermanRJ going through our trash for his 4th story on me.' Oh, Jeff…”

And in another now-deleted Tweet, he called German a “typical bully,” who slung “100 pounds of BS,” adding: “You'd think he'd have better things to do.”

At the September 2022 press conference, Koren alleged German was exposing “potential wrongdoing” which had “upset” Telles, adding: “Telles was also upset that there was additional reporting that was pending.”

Of 69 reporters killed across the globe in 2022, German was the only journalist slain in the U.S., according to data collected by the Committee to Protect Journalists .

Following his death, the Review-Journal 's executive editor Glenn Cook called the reporter “the gold standard of the news business.”

Cook continued: “It's hard to imagine what Las Vegas would be like today without his many years of shining a bright light on dark places.”

Video surveillance obtained from the hotel showed Medof arriving at the hotel around 2:12 a.m. His girlfriend, identified as Stephanie Duarte, arrived around 2:25 a.m.

The motel clerk told police that Duarte asked if Medof had been looking for her and seemed nervous.

A couple in the room next door told police they were awakened by the sounds of a fight between 2 and 3 a.m.

Police officers observed that Medof had red marks on his rib cage, back, shoulders and knees. Various abrasions were also observed on Medof's bicep, left elbow, knees and the top of his right foot.

The arrest reports also noted that Duarte's body was already in rigor mortis when they arrived, indicating she had been dead for a few hours before a call was placed for help.

Medof refused to answer any questions at the police station and requested an attorney.

The Clark County coroner has not officially identified the victim or released her cause of death.

Medof is scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. July 15.

Two Canadians, a mother of four and a man just days away from his 24th birthday, were among dozens of people killed in Las Vegas when a gunman opened fire from a 32nd- floor hotel room on a large crowd gathered across the road at an outdoor country music festival Sunday night.

Jessica Klymchuk, of Valleyview, Alta., and Jordan McIldoon, 23, of Maple Ridge, B.C., were among the 58 people who died in the horrific attack that also left more than 500 others injured, including an unknown number of Canadians.

Klymchuk was an educational assistant, librarian and bus driver for St. Stephen’s School, said the Holy Family Catholic Regional Division.

“The scope of this tragedy is worldwide and we are feeling its impact here at home,” the division’s superintendent, Betty Turpin, said in a statement.

The scope of this tragedy is worldwide and we are feeling its impact here at home

A post on Klymchuk’s Facebook page says she got engaged in April, and was in Vegas with her fiance.

In British Columbia, a family member confirmed McIldoon was among the dead.

“It’s a terrible thing,” said the relative, who asked his name not be used. “I don’t handle it very well.”

McIldoon would have turned 24 on Friday and was a month shy of completing a course to qualify as a heavy-duty mechanic. His parents travelled to Nevada on Monday to retrieve his body, the relative said.

I am with a young man who died in my arms

In a Facebook posting that could not immediately be verified, Heather Gooze of Las Vegas said she was outside the festival grounds when the Canadian passed away.

“I am with a young man who died in my arms! RIP Jordan McIldoon from British Columbia,” Gooze wrote. “I can’t believe this just happened!!!”

Those who were at the outdoor festival when the shooting occurred said it was only when the performer on stage dropped his microphone and ran that the true horror of what was unfolding dawned on the crowd. Their first thoughts as the sound of automatic gunfire resounded through the area turned to fireworks, many said.

“We heard the shots get fired, we saw the smoke,” Ashley Fowler, who was with friends, told the K-Rock radio station in St. John’s, N.L. “Everyone thought it was fireworks at the show until Jason Aldean dropped his mic and ran from the stage, so everyone started to run.”

As the panic- and fear-stricken crowd of more than 22,000 at the Route 91 Harvest Festival scrambled for their lives, some found themselves running into a wall of people, or a fence with barbed wire around the airport. A local man with a truck attached a rope to the fence and pulled it down, Fowler said.

“They literally have to divert any planes landing in Las Vegas to Arizona because we’re all standing on the runway running from the shooters,” said Fowler, who got separated from her friends in the panic. “I’m in so much shock.”

Police identified the man who opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel as Stephen Paddock, 64, of Mesquite, Nev., less than two hours from Las Vegas. SWAT teams using explosives stormed his hotel room and found he had killed himself, authorities said. He had as many as 10 guns with him, including rifles, they said.

Jody Ansell, of Stonewall, Man., was among the injured. She said in a Facebook message from her hospital bed that she was recovering.

“I was shot in the right arm and the medical staff are taking care of me,” Ansell said.

Mikey McBryan, of Hay River, N.W.T., and his girlfriend were just leaving the casino at Mandalay Bay when officers with guns drawn began yelling at them to get out because of shooters in the building. McBryan said they ran across the road to behind a large electrical transformer outside a gas station.

“It now seems like a foolish idea but we didn’t know what was going on,” McBryan said in an interview. “Everyone was kind of in a daze.”

McBryan said he didn’t hear any gunfire, but remembers waves of screaming as hundreds of people from the concert began descending on the area and police set up roadblocks.

In a statement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the government denounced the “senseless and cowardly act of violence.

“Our hearts break for our American friends and neighbours today,” Trudeau said.

Police have warned that identifying bodies from the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history will be a “long, laborious process.”

Global Affairs Canada said it was aware of the two Canadian fatalities and had sent a team of consular officials to Las Vegas to help those in need.

Other Canadians at the concert or the hotel included Victoria’s chief of police Del Manak and his family, and the leader of the Opposition Yukon party, Stacey Hassard. They were not hurt.

Las Vegas is a popular tourist destination for Canadians. Visitors from Canada made up nearly half of international tourists who arrived in the city by air last year, according to the Las Vegas Visitor Authority.

Video from ride-share driver captures ‘random’ killing of Las Vegas carpet cleaner

L AS VEGAS (KLAS) — A shocking video 8 News Now obtained shows the moments a carpet cleaner was gunned down in the southwest Las Vegas valley in what police described as a random killing.

Kayla Alery, 27, was indicted on July 31 by a Clark County Grand Jury.

A ride-share driver parked inside an apartment complex near Fort Apache Road and Twain Avenue captured video of the March 26 shooting.

“Sh**, holy sh**,” the driver is heard saying on video. “Oh my God.”

The Las Vegas Metro Police Department identified the person shot and killed as 41-year-old Raul Cardoza-Lopez. He was at the apartment complex with his brother giving a resident an estimate on a carpet cleaning job.

“This appears to be a random incident, completely innocent hard-working human being,”  Metro Lt. Jason Johannson said in March. “He was here at work. He was shot and killed while doing his job.”

8 News Now obtained three videos that the Clark County District Attorney’s office submitted to a grand jury as part of the evidence for its case. Alery is charged in the death of Cardoza-Lopez.

Police alleged that Alery immediately ran out of the complex armed with a gun after shooting Cardoza-Lopez. She was eventually located by a Metro helicopter.

“He’s running, we’re going to go at him to make sure he doesn’t run away,” officers said over the radio.

In the shooting’s aftermath, officers described the suspect as a man.

“Hands up, he’s walking toward units now,” an officer said. “He does have something heavy in his front hoodie pocket, just so you know.”

Video from the police helicopter shows Alery surrounded by police with their guns drawn. She gets down to her knees and police find a handgun tucked in her waistband.

According to records from the Nevada Department of Corrections,  Alery was paroled from prison in December of 2023 and ordered not to have any weapons.

Alery told officers she didn’t remember where she got the gun.

Court documents show the Clark County District Attorney’s office may be seeking the death penalty against Alery.

Motorcyclist dies on 215 beltway after hitting pickup truck

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - A 17-year-old motorcyclist died after hitting a pickup truck on the 215 beltway, Nevada State Police says.

The crash happened Thursday on I-215 west of the Aviary Way overpass. This is between Aliante Parkway and Decatur Boulevard.

Police said the motorcyclist, identified by the Clark County coroner as Isaiah Banuelos, traveled westbound weaving through traffic and splitting lanes at a “high rate of speed.”

Banuelos noticed that traffic was slowing down and braked. According to police, this caused the motorcycle to overturn and eject the rider. He hit the right rear of a Dodge Ram.

The crash caused the Ram to rotate. But the driver made a controlled stop on to the left shoulder of the westbound 215.

The driver of the Ram stayed on scene and cooperated with officers.

Police said Banuelos died at the scene. FOX5 verified a GoFundMe for Banuelos. Those interested could find it here .

The investigation is being conducted by the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol - Traffic Homicide Unit.

2024 Year to date: The Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Southern Command has investigated 47 fatal crashes resulting in 55 fatalities.

Man, 65, killed in southeast Las Vegas crash

A 65-year-old man died following a suspected DUI crash early Saturday in southeast Las Vegas.

(Bizuayehu Tesfaye/Las Vegas Review-Journal) @bizutesfaye

The crash occurred around 12:07 a.m. on South Las Vegas Boulevard at the intersection of East Pyle Avenue, according to a Metropolitan Department news release.

Police said evidence at the scene indicated that a Nissan Rogue was traveling northbound on Las Vegas Boulevard, approaching Pyle Avenue. A Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling southbound on Las Vegas Boulevard approaching the intersection failed to yield the right of way and made an abrupt eastbound turn crossing the Nissan’s path. The front of the Nissan collided with the right side of the Jeep.

The driver of the Nissan was transported to University Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the Jeep showed signs of impairment and was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center for DUI, resulting in death, the news release said.

The death marks the 93rd traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction in 2024.

The crash remained under investigation by Metro’s Collision Investigation Section.
