Maritime Museums Online

Maritime Museums Get Creative with Virtual Resources

With a record number of people going online for information and entertainment, maritime museums the world over have gotten creative with providing resources to support and promote our seafaring heritage. The National Maritime Historical website has become an increasingly valuable resource for students and scholars of all ages.  Every issue of the magazine is available to the public on our Sea History page. In addition to the fully hyperlinked Sea Histor y Index , there are links to hundreds of useful websites for researchers on our Maritime History on the Internet page, digital photo collection sites on our Maritime Images page, more than 200 maritime museums and historic sites on our Museums, Programs & Historic Sites page, our collection of Sea History for Kids features, and a new archive page for our Sea History Today email series.

It has been fun and rewarding to get the word out about all of the incredibly innovative and diverse ways that museums and other organizations are connecting with people online. We’re in awe of the creativity—museums have produced virtual tours and spotlight features about special items in their collections. Organizations with educational programs are reaching out to young kids and students with activities to do at home, videos, and learning modules. Many institutions have made entire collections or archives available online and posted informative and entertaining lectures on their websites and social media pages.  NMHS senior staff writer Shelley Reid has compiled a selection of these offerings below.  Check them out—and let us know of any resources we should add by emailing [email protected] .

Maine Maritime Museum Boat Tours

Location: Bath Region: Maine’s MidCoast & Islands Activities: Boat tours, museum visitation Family Friendly

The Bath area was founded on shipbuilding and the sea. So it’s an ideal place to explore by water.

Maine Maritime Museum has opened its warm-weather boat tours this summer from its location on the banks of the Kennebec River. Leaving from the museum pier, the tour boat Merrymeeting sails on several different excursions down rivers and up the coast. Some trips leave daily while others are scheduled several times a week or weekly. All cruise fees include two-day admission to the museum.

On a short (one hour) ‘Shipyards & Lighthouses Cruise,’ you’ll motor past the adjacent Bath Iron Works, which builds advanced warships for the US Navy, and to diminutive river lighthouses including the Doubling Point Light and Kennebec Range Lights. For lighthouse lovers, there are a pair of longer tours (up to four hours), during which the Merrymeeting sails by up to ten lighthouses, including river lights such as Squirrel Point and off-shore stations such as Seguin Island Light. One weekly tour takes explorers to the boat’s namesake, Merrymeeting Bay, and wends through the bay’s unusual ecosystem, created by a confluence of six coastal rivers.

The Merrymeeting offers an open upper deck and enclosed lower deck. Normally, the little ship can carry 50 passengers. But due to the coronavirus pandemic, that number has been cut to 20 to comply with social-distance guidelines. Face coverings are required on the enclosed lower deck and when social distancing is not possible. Given the smaller passenger count, people are generally able to spread out and enjoy themselves.

Before or after a tour on Merrymeeting , take time to tour the museum itself. With its 20-acre campus - including the former Percy & Small Shipyard - Maine Maritime offers hundreds of exhibits for fans of the state’s deep history of shipbuilding, lobstering and seafaring.

And remember to visit the museum’s riverside lawn to experience New England’s largest sculpture. The white metal installation offers an enormous outline of what was Percy & Small Shipyard’s greatest achievement: the schooner Wyoming, launched in 1909. The sculpture is 444-feet long and has six flagpoles representing the ship’s six masts. When launched, it was the largest wooden sailing vessel built in the United States.

National Maritime Museum

The  National Maritime Museum  Tour is a great intensive on all things British and naval. The Museum itself is all about the past 500 years of British naval power and traditions. Due to the philanthropy of Sammy Ofer, the Museum has been improved and expanded, These improvements include the very smart Museum cafe, where we pause half way through our tour for refreshments. Today the Museum has over 2 million artefacts and is the largest museum of its type in the world. Our tour includes Turner’s wonderful painting of the Battle of Trafalgar, which he completed in the 1820’s. The king at the time, who had the painting commissioned, was apparently not impressed with Turner’s realism depicting some of the horror of war.

National Maritime Museum tour guests

We also are able to experience the Nelson, Navy and Nation gallery with its paintings, weapons and exhibitions – including the jacket Nelson was wearing the day of his death during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. He had been shot by a sniper and died hours later. . We also get to experience the Trade Winds gallery, which tells the story of the rise of the East India Company from its Royal Charter to its finally becoming immensely powerful, wealthy and corrupt.

On this tour we also visit 'Inigo Jones's wonderful Queens House' containing many  beautiful  paintings  including  the famous Queen Elizabeth Armada portrait

“Our guide was wonderful and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Would easily do another tour with Greenwich Royal Tours!”

North Carolina Maritime Museum

A haven for the unconventional history of the Crystal Coast, the museum is the official repository for all of the artifacts discovered on the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship captained by Blackbeard the infamous pirate. With an impressive display of seashells from around the world with 5,000 specimens from more than 100 countries, the museum is also home to an interesting contraption known as the “Life Car,” a mini-submarine used to rescue mariners stranded at sea.

Just across the street from the museum is the Watercraft Center where volunteers actively build and restore boats in an effort to preserve the Crystal Coast’s tradition of “backyard boat-building.” The Watercraft Center also is home to the “Boat in a Day” program, an opportunity for families to build and take home a six-foot boat, known locally as a Harkers Island skiff.

maritime museum tour

Rianna Turner draws her inspiration from unexpected color combinations, interesting compositions and the challenge of combining those elements to create modern impressionistic art that is striking and memorable. Most of her personal pieces provide a nod to her colorful, coastal upbringing in South MS, influenced by not just its subjects, but the feel of simply being near the water. Everything about the coast feels brighter, lighter and happier. She strives to create art that takes viewers to those sweet, southern, good-for-the-soul places. Winning her first art contest at the age of 6, Rianna set her sights on becoming an artist and focused on honing her skills and planning her education accordingly. She graduated in 2002 and again in 2006 from the University of Mobile, with degrees in Communication, Counseling and Fine Art, and later went on to teach painting in different capacities along the coast and throughout the US. Rianna’s art has evolved through the years, but what drives her has remained the same- a deep desire to create and encourage joy and light. She believes it may partly be the people pleaser in her, but states: “mostly it's from a daily grateful heart that loves Jesus and the light, joy and salvation He brings.”

Fun and unique. If you are going to the Naval Aviation Museum, hit this place on your way out. There is a fee but it is a unique experience. Loved it.

I'm a little biased towards historical landmarks/museums but I loved this exhibit! The lighthouse is a well preserved property that lets you overlook the beautiful gulf coast. It has a really neat walkthrough of the old home and such a nice and maintained lawn with gift shop that was a fun visit for about an hour or so. There are typically a couple workers throughout the home and lighthouse that are very knowledge and helpful with answering questions/facts about the historical property!

maritime museum tour

I'm always looking to visit and climb a lighthouse when one is in the area... I didn't know until I was in the area that the lighthouse was actually on the NAS... And when I went to make reservations to visit, I learned that the civilian public is not allowed on NAS due to a student shooting back in 2019... SO, luckily, the lighthouse has been able to make tours available where you are picked up off site and brought onto the NAS and then you can visit and climb the lighthouse, visit the museum and the giftshop. I was very excited about this (but is also where I learned I could not go to the Naval Aviation Museum and I was very sad about that). So, once on the bus, we made it to through the NAS gates, we made it to the lighthouse, on the way, we were not able to stop and visit Fort Barrancas either and could barely see out the tour bus windows (weird tint/wrap with advertising on the outside). We were able to roam the grounds freely, including the museum and lighthouse. We were warned about the climb, 177 steps... I was ready! as I have climbed taller lighthouses... However, these stairs were not ordinary stairs. These were wrought iron with all kinds of open holes, they require secure shoes - no flip flops... And these stairs are 9"... standard stairs are 7 1/2". Doesn't seem like a lot of difference, but.... For someone who is afraid of heights and having to watch each step and looking straight down through all of them, this was not an easy task. Especially if you are going up and someone wants to come down... there was no way in hell I was stepping to the center where there was no place for your feet since it tapered to a point and and NO internal handrail. On top of that, once at the top and you squeeze between the lens and the small opening to the observation deck... it was so narrow, I was hugging the lighthouse behind me. But, I did it! And as I got around and just about to the opening back inside, there is a permanent ladder taking up 3-quarters of the observation deck space where you would normally walk/stand, so I had to go toward the edge of the railing which scared the bejuzzies out of me..... holding on as tight as I could as I rounded the ladder, I stepped back in and took quite a few deep breaths and had a chat with the staff while I was there...which is where I learned about the specifics on the stairs... And on the way down, it was so much worse because I haddddd to look down the entire time and it was (for me) pretty treacherous - but sooooo worth it! The staff on the bus, up at the top of the lighthouse, inside the gift shop and the museum/inn-keepers quarters were all very nice. I bought a few things in the gift shop too! Don't forget to drop some cash in the donation box. I believe once they have the airshow later this year, they hope to reopen the base to the public again so regular folk (non military or escorted by cardholders) can visit the lighthouse AND the Naval Aviation museum both!

Just Perfect. Very Beautiful lighthouse. It is a very magical piratey place indeed mate, when the briney deep mixes with a tad of cold dank weather and that blimey Ft Pickens foggy rolls in, Arrrr! It's a must see in Pirate'cola. My father began in the military here when we were just mere tiny little lads. (You can't get in here, on the base, unless you have a military pass) So, I come with my father, he has a pass. As he was a pilot in the military here. When my father flew choppers in the war he was exposed to agent orange so he gets vertigo when he climbs, so we do not go to the top. We usually hang out at the bottom & have a PB&J while he tells us stories of how he used to fly over & land his little single engine on the National Seashore when there was nothing out here. Anyway, the lighthouse is in perfect condition, well preserved as it's heavily guarded on the base. If your lucky enough to know someone in the Military to get to see the Pirate'cola lighthouse it's one of the most magnificent, if not the prettiest in the country. Highly highly recommend. Queen of Pirate'cola approved.

Foggy Pirate'cola lighthouse.

I'm the same vein as the Naval Aviation Museum across the street, Pensacola Lighthouse is a must see. One of the first last and only operating lighthouses in the Gulf of Mexico, it offers historical punch for all ages. It's fair in admission and, if you're not the faint of heart, has the most amazing view if you can make it to the top! It's beautiful and you can knock out one of your Pelicans in Paradise photo ops!

If you don't have a military ID, don't bother showing up. Under the current administration, civilians are apparently no longer welcome. You won't be allowed past the front gate. Was not that way when we visited 3 years ago. Also, didn't seem like the right hand knew what the left was doing. Got told by the West Gate guard at Pensacola NAS that we could get in the Main Gate. Drove another 10 miles to get there, only to be told by the guard there that civilians are not allowed at all. Would have been nice to know that before we wasted our time and gasoline!

Photo of Manuela P.

What a treat to climb to the top of this amazing lighthouse! 177 steps is not for the faint of heart, though so worth the climb for the views! June 5th 2020 was an amazing day! Both my Dad & husband did their Navy Air training at NAS Pensacola so the visits back are always so special. Though I have been to the grounds of the Maritime Museum many times, I never had the time or opportunity to climb to the top. It was a low volume day so we weren't rushed in any way. When Covid ends, be sure to go see the museum which should be open soon!

It was an awesome experience! The stairs were ok. A little scary but it's fine when you get to the top, an awesome view. The stories of the ghosts and stains are fun if you're trying to get spooked out!

This place is SO FREAKING COOL!!! Big warning though, and I must put this absolutely at the top of my review. If you are scared of heights or tight places, have trouble breathing, have any sort of physical or medical issue that make stairs challenging, or if you're afraid of climbing with very little to hold on to - DO NOT GO UP THE LIGHTHOUSE!!! I hadn't done any research into the experience prior to going, so we kind of hit every obstacle on our visit lol Kids must be a certain height OR age to be able to climb the lighthouse, and you may not baby wear (which is completely understandable after actually going to the top). We didn't know this, so we showed up with my 1 year old in his Tula on my husband's back, our 4 year old, and our 6 year old. Unfortunately, only our 6 year old was tall enough/old enough to go up, so she and I went up together while my husband stayed on the ground with our two other kiddos. When you enter the lighthouse, they have an episode of a ghost hunting show that featured the property playing... very cool!! I had no idea it's supposedly haunted. The stairs are VERY narrow, and there's only a hand rail on one side. Kids must go up in front of you and come down behind you, so most of the way up, I was riddled with anxiety of keeping my daughter safe. If you're going up and others are coming down, they have right of way and priority to use the hand rail. That leaves you with the only option of scooting over and praying you don't tumble down. Along the way up, there are little windows with absolutely stunning views of the beaches and water. Once you get to the top, there's a small catwalk around the lighthouse to enjoy the view. Just don't look down ;) The property itself is very cool and my husband wasn't bored while he waited for us! There are tons of neat artifacts and information about the property and area. There's also a beautifully set up grassy area with lawn games for kids. The visitor center/gift shops has some really, really neat stuff (that of course is really expensive... but still fun to look at and admire!). Admission was slightly high in my opinion, but the property is beautifully maintained and so much history has been preserved that I don't mind contributing to the cause. I definitely recommend coming here if you're in the Pensacola area!

Walking tour along Lake Erie teaches city's history. Owners have plan to add more

Portrait of Jennie Geisler

Who knew that at the foot of the Bicentennial Tower lies Mile Zero of a 600-mile cycling trek from Erie, through Pittsburgh and on to Washington D.C.?

Did you know there was a career-defining personality conflict between War of 1812 veterans Captain Gilbert Knapp and Daniel Dobbins?

Did you know the American ships that fought in the Battle of Lake Erie were made on the bayfront, by Dobbins himself?

Ever wondered about that random, ugly smokestack just sitting between the Bayfront Parkway and Presque Isle Bay?

We could go on and on about what we learned from Heather and Lauren Cass, who have started a business, Tour Erie, a walking tour of Erie's bayfront. Lauren Cass tells the stories of history and glory that fill a 90-minute, 1.25-mile trek with 16 stops.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

"So much has changed down here," said Heather Cass, 52, whose daughter, Lauren, 21, will give the speaking parts of the tour. Heather Cass is a former employee of the Times Publishing Co. She now works in communications at Penn State Behrend, where Lauren is a junior and a tour guide for prospective students and other groups.

Lauren Cass can even tell you how they got a food truck up on the brightly colored deck on Dobbins landing. She has the details and shows the photos to prove it.

Their tour, which is $25 per adult, $10 for kids and free for those 4 and younger, take you quickly from the days of the Eriez Native Americans through the construction of the skywalk between Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel and the convention center.

"We talk about the War of 1812, Presque Isle Birding, Don Jon ship building, Blasco Library and the Maritime Museum, and the cruise boat tour that was recently approved," Heather Cass said.

They had the idea to start a tour business because Lauren loves giving the Behrend tours.

"We just kind of came down here and made a list of things we wanted to touch on," Heather said. "We had to narrow it down. It was a lot."

She said she and Lauren also researched tours in Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Buffalo. She said it was hard to believe that someone else hasn't started an Erie tour like this.

"I said if no one else is going to do it, we'll do it," Heather Cass said.

The Cass' got some help from the Northwest Pennsylvania Innovation Bee Hive Network with startup needs, such as the custom logo meant to recall Lake Erie and waves, as well as 300 rack cards (brochures) and behind-the-scenes paperwork.

"They've helped so much," Heather Cass said. "They helped with the website , I don't know how we could have gotten this far without them."

Heather and Lauren Cass are hoping the tour business takes off and becomes Lauren's future after college.

"For now it's a side gig," Heather Cass said. "We can do as much or as little as we want."

But Lauren makes no bones about the fact that she hopes for it to become her main gig.

"This is what I want to do," she said. "This is the dream, my plan, my future."

The tours run Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m.; Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 p.m. For more information, visit toureriepa.com/tours .

Expansion plans already

Heather and Lauren Cass have no shortage of directions they hope to take with the tour concept. They are ready with a new tour for fall focused on "Eerie Stories, Legends and Lore Sunset Tour," and Heather, a dedicated runner, would like to do a "fitness" tour that goes 3 miles, as well as develop a tour about shipwrecks.

"There's no end to shipwreck stories," she said.

They're also considering tours designed for children that end in a day at the Experience Children's Museum.

"We have millions of ideas," Lauren Cass said. "It's so exciting."

It was previously known as Kuznetsk until 1931, and as Stalinsk until 1961.

Founded in 1618 by men from Tomsk as a Cossack ostrog (fort) on the Tom River , it was initially called Kuznetsky ostrog ( Кузне́цкий острог ). [2] It became the seat of Kuznetsky Uyezd in 1622. [13] Joseph Stalin 's rapid industrialization of the Soviet Union transformed the sleepy town into a major coal mining and industrial center in the 1930s. It merged with Sad Gorod in 1931. From 1931 to 1932, the city was known as Novokuznetsk and between 1932 and 1961 as Stalinsk ( Ста́линск ), after Stalin. As a result of de-Stalinization , it was renamed back to Novokuznetsk .
