New Tata Safari interior review: Any quality concerns? | TOI Auto

The updated Tata Safari boasts a refreshed interior, featuring a redesigned dashboard and enhanced features. This flagship SUV remains available as a six or seven-seater. Our review model had six seats with ventilated captain seats in the second row. The front showcases a new 12.3-inch floating touchscreen, compatible with smartphones, and a 10.25-inch digital colour instrument cluster capable of displaying maps. Tata has incorporated faux wood finishing on the dashboard and included a speedy 45W charging port. While the Safari offers a range of features, any potential quality concerns should be taken into consideration.

Tata Safari facelift interior leaked in new spy images

The interior of the new Safari will have multiple touchscreens with fewer physical buttons.

The Tata Safari facelift is set to receive major design changes both inside and out. Now, new spy images have emerged that reveal the SUV's interior in full detail.

At first glance, the interior of the Safari looks truly modern. The dashboard has a layered design with the central section finished in a contrasting shade.

A large floating touchscreen sits atop the centre console, while the HVAC controls have been integrated into a sleek touch-based unit. Below that is a rotary dial possibly for the drive modes and a stubby gear lever for the 6-speed automatic.

On the driver's side, the Safari facelift will get an all-new 4-spoke steering wheel first seen on the Sierra EV Concept and a digital instrument cluster.

The new interior design adopted by Tata does look upmarket, but the piano black surfaces and screens are a fingerprint magnet. Also, some may prefer to have physical buttons for some of the most basic operations.

The 5-seater Tata Harrier is expected to get a similar interior. Both SUVs will also receive several design updates on the outside.

Following teasers of the exterior of the Harrier and Safari facelifts, Tata Motors has now given us a preview of the interior of the updated SUVs. Bookings for both SUVs will commence on October 6, and the price announcement is expected in the coming weeks. Let’s take a closer look at all that’s new on the inside of the Harrier and Safari facelifts.

• Infotainment screen size could be up to 12.3-inch

The teaser only shows a few key details – an all-new digital instrument cluster that will likely be a 10.25-inch unit, a larger central touchscreen infotainment system, a backlit Tata logo on the steering wheel and an ambient lighting strip underlining the dashboard. Unsurprisingly, some of these elements have been carried forward from the new Nexon range .  

The digital instrument cluster with customisable displays appears identical to the new Nexon, and we expect higher variants of the updated Harrier and Safari to get the larger 12.3-inch screen from the Nexon EV , while lower variants could get the 10.25-inch unit. However, as we have seen in interior spy shots before , the steering wheel with the backlit logo will have four spokes here on the Harrier and Safari instead of two as on the Nexon.

The ambient lighting strip, meanwhile, highlights the defining line of the dashboard, which largely appears unchanged from before but previous spy shots have also suggested all-new details. A new coloured gloss panel will replace the faux wood trim on the outgoing models; and there will also be leatherette padding with contrast double stitching and redesigned central AC vents. The new touch-based HVAC controls with toggle switches will be another element carried forward from the Nexon.

Tata Motors will also redesign the centre console area with a new gear lever and a new rotary drive selector with revised storage spaces. Overall, the interior is expected to see a step up in quality with improved functionality of the software systems.

Tata Safari facelift new exterior details

After only previewing the front fascia of the Harrier and Safari facelifts, Tata Motors also dropped a teaser showing the rear design of the Safari. It will have sleeker tail-lights with a connected LED strip, and an all-new dual-tone bumper with silver inserts and protrusions towards the edges that mimic the front-end design.

Tata Safari, Harrier facelifts powertrain options

Mechanically, both SUVs will continue with the 170hp, 2.0-litre diesel engine mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox, having recently been updated for BS6 Stage II emissions norms. Meanwhile, Tata Motors is working on  petrol  as well as  EV powertrains  for these SUVs, but those are still some time away. Expect more details to trickle in on the Safari and Harrier facelifts in the coming days in the run-up to their launch, which will take place in the coming weeks.

New Tata Safari Interior, Exterior Sketches Reveal Interesting Details

Tata Motors keeps pouring in interesting details of the production-ready new Tata Safari that’s set to debut on 26 th January 2021. After teasing its front grille, the carmaker has now released a new video revealing official sketches of its exterior and interior. The upcoming new Tata 7-seater SUV will feature a large floating infotainment system that’s likely to support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. You can also notice a three-spoke steering wheel featuring signature badge at the centre.

The previous spy pictures reveal that the production-ready 2021 Tata Safari will come with premium Benecke-Kaliko oak brown leather seat upholstery and JBL audio system. Unlike the Harrier, the bigger SUV will have the signature-style oak brown dual-tone dashboard. Some of its other key features will include a 7-inch instrument panel, adjustable driver’s seat, climate control system, auto dimming IRVMs, electronic handbrake, rear armrest with cup holders, cruise control and more.

Similar to the Harrier, the new 2021 Tata Safari SUV is likely to offer several active and passive safety fitments such as electronic stability program, corner stability control, hill hold and hill descent control, roll over mitigation, traction control, Isofix child seat mounts and multiple airbags.  

The official sketches reveal that the new Safari will retain some of the iconic design elements from the original model including the stepped roof and pronounced hood. Upfront, the SUV will feature a slimmer grille and LED split headlamps with LED DRLs. Its other design highlights will include newly-designed alloy wheels, new roof rails, stepped roof, larger windshield, upright tailgate with roof spoiler and revised taillamps.

On the engine front, the new Tata Safari will feature a 170bhp, 2.0L Kryotec turbocharged diesel engine with 6-speed manual and torque convertor automatic gearbox options. It’s the same powertrain that does duty in the Harrier. The carmaker might also introduce new colour schemes to its upcoming 7-seater SUV.

Tata Safari.ev found testing in India: What to expect?

Tata Motors 's Safari.eV, a three-row variant of the Harrier.eV, has been spied during its testing phase. Despite heavy camouflage indicating it's still in development, the design language seems to closely resemble its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart. The test model displayed features like a front grille, connected LED daytime running lights (DRLs), and headlight housing, identical to the ICE version.

It will run on 19-inch wheels

The alloy wheels of the Safari.ev, while slightly different in design, are expected to maintain the same 19-inch size as its ICE version. The rear end is also likely to remain unchanged, featuring identical connected LED taillights. Despite being an electric vehicle, the exterior design elements of the Safari.ev seem to closely follow those of its ICE counterpart.

A look at the interiors

Tata Safari.ev's interior is also predicted to resemble its ICE version, including a dashboard layout and a four-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated 'Tata' logo. The electric SUV will feature a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment panel, a 10.25-inch digital driver's display, dual-zone climate control, ventilated seats, and a panoramic sunroof. For safety, it is expected to get up to seven airbags, a 360-degree-view camera with a blind-spot monitor, electronic stability control (ESC), and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

What about its powertrain?

Tata has not yet disclosed the battery pack and motor specifications for the Safari.ev. However, it is anticipated to offer a claimed range of roughly 500km. The electric SUV will be built on Tata's new Acti.EV platform, which also supports the recently launched Punch.ev. Given that Tata confirmed an all-wheel-drive option for the Harrier.ev, there is speculation that the Safari.ev may offer the same.
