About Iran & Our Special Offers

Persia is a land of four seasons with rich and colorful history, countless monuments, delicious food and hospitality of its people above all. Iran is one of the world’s oldest civilizations, and has been among the world’s most thoughtful and complex civilizations from the very beginning. There are aspects of Iranian civilization that, in one way or another, have touched almost every human being on the planet. But the story of how that happened, and the full significance of those influences, is often unknown and forgotten . Iran is the land of history and culture, not only because of its Pasargad and Persepolis, Chogha Zanbil, Naqsh-e Jahan Square, Yazd, Shiraz, Khuzestan, Isfahan, and its tangible heritage inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List; but also for its millennial civilization and thousands of historical and archeological monuments and sites which demonstrate variety and value of religious and spiritual heritage, rituals, and intact traditions of this country as a sign of authenticity and splendor. Unfortunately, few people have been able to gain such deep impression of Persia.

This short but insightful trip takes us on a journey through the heartland of these empires and ‘behind the veil’ of this much misunderstood country. From the beautiful gardens and shrines of Shiraz, we’ll travel via the atmospheric and timeless remains of the ancient Persian capital of Persepolis to the town of Yazd, with its well-preserved traditional houses and Zoroastrian burial towers. From here we will continue to one of the Middle East’s most spectacular destinations – the C17th and C18th capital of Isfahan. Home not only to some of the region’s finest Islamic architecture and the world’s second largest square, the Mayden-e Imam, this is also a great place to wander through the narrow corridors of the extensive souks with their handicrafts and carpets. But perhaps more memorable than any of this is the warm hospitality of the people we’ll meet along the way. Most Iranians are incredibly well-educated and widely read and will enjoy nothing more than putting the world to rights with passers-by, and for many visitors such interactions will remain their most enduring memories of the country.

This is a varied and rewarding trip which will very much appeal to anyone who has ever wanted to see the treasures of ancient Persia or has ever wondered what life in Iran is really like.

EXPERT TEAM

Accommodation, entrance fees, fitness rating.

As an overall ethos, wherever possible we aim to use characterful accommodation that enhances the overall travel experience, not just offers a bed for the night. This can obviously vary dramatically from country to country and from trip to trip.

On this particular trip we will be comfortable 4* hotels throughout, but most hotels in Iran are functional rather than characterful! Please note that the accommodation mentioned in the itinerary is intended as a guide only and is always subject to availability.

Wild Miles Club

When you book a trip with Wild Frontiers you are awarded points, which are based on the return distance from London to the arrival city of your trip. Points are awarded for all our holidays, including both our escorted group tours and tailor-made trips. When you accrue points, you will qualify for the following discounts on all future bookings:

Day 1 Tour begins in Shiraz

persian freak tour

Accommodation for this night is included due to the arrival times of our suggested flights, in the early hours of Day 2.

Day 2 Shiraz

persian freak tour

Our late morning walking tour includes a visit to the imposing Arg-e Karim Khan Fortress, with its 14-metre high circular towers which dominate the city centre. There will also be time to explore the bazaar and some of Shiraz’s famous gardens and teahouses before soaking up the atmosphere at the tomb of the great Persian poet Hafez.

Day 3 Shiraz - Persepolis - Shiraz

persian freak tour

Today we have the whole day to enjoy what must surely be a highlight of Iran, if not of the entire Middle East: Darius the Great’s fabulous Persepolis. We will also visit the magnificent Achaemenid tombs at Nagsh e Rostam, cut high into cliffs above the ground and facing respectfully towards Persepolis. After ample time exploring the site we will then make our way back to Shiraz for the opportunity to discover more of this beautiful city.

Day 4 Shiraz - Pasargadae - Yazd

persian freak tour

Leaving Shiraz today, we head for Pasargadae with its six-tiered tomb of Cyrus the Great, founder of the great Persian Empire. Later we’ll continue to Yazd in time to watch an eerie sunset from the Towers of Silence, the unique Zoroastrian burial towers.

persian freak tour

Our first port of call is the Bagh-e-Doulat Abad Gardens, which were once a residence of the former ruler Karim Khan Zand. They consist of small pavilions set in peaceful gardens and the tallest Badgir - wind-tower - in town. We'll also visit the magnificent Jameh - Friday - Mosque and the informative Water Museum. There'll then be time to wander the winding old city streets and bazaar, before trying to visit a Zurkhaneh - House of Strength - a mix of Sufism, nationalism, music and sport into this ancient spectacle.

Day 6 Yazd - Isfahan

persian freak tour

We depart for the old Persian capital of Isfahan today. Once known as 'half the world' this is a truly fascinating city and it will be our base for the next three nights. Upon arrival we will check into our hotel, relax and take a leisurely walk to orientate ourselves in this most memorable of cities.

Day 7 Isfahan

persian freak tour

Our sightseeing today will include visits to the Chehel Sotun Palace and Museum, and the magnificent Nasqh Jahan Square. Here we will explore some of the world’s most beautiful mosques, the Imam - Shah - Mosque and the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque. We will also visit the magnificent six-storey Ali Qapu Palace, built in the 16th century to serve as a gateway to the royal palaces that are situated in the parklands beyond.

Day 8 Isfahan

persian freak tour

Today offers us another opportunity to explore this fascinating city. We'll visit the Jameh Mosque, the Armenian Quarter and the many bridges that cross the Zayandeh River. There's plenty of time to explore the local culture, shop in the bazaars or simply relax and people watch.

Day 9 Isfahan - Kashan - Tehran

persian freak tour

We depart Isfahan this morning to make our way to Iran’s cosmopolitan capital, Tehran. En route we’ll stop in Kashan where we visit the Royal Gardens of Fin and the Agha Bozorg Mosque, which was built in the 18th century. The mosque is famous for its imposing dome and large sunken Madrassah, and the large wooden door that guards the entrance is said to have as many studs as there are verses of the Quran. We will also have a chance to visit one of the restored merchant houses for which Kashan is famed. Continuing on to Tehran, we should arrive late this afternoon ahead of our final dinner together - over which we can reminisce about our travels from Shiraz.

Day 10 Tour ends in Tehran

persian freak tour

The tour ends early this morning, when those on the suggested group flights will be transferred to the airport. Depending on the time of your return flights, you may like to visit the sumptuous Golestan Palace, the oldest of Tehran’s historic monuments. A World Heritage Site, this stunning complex of palaces and manicured gardens encompasses more than two centuries of Qajar rule.

ACCOMMODATION USED ON THIS TOUR

Moshir ol mamalek garden hotel, yazd.

Set in a lovely landscaped Persian garden from the Qajar era, featuring flowing water systems and fountains, the traditional Moshir Al Mamalek Garden Hotel compliments ancient Iranian architecture found in the beautiful desert city of Yazd. With vaulted and domed ceilings, murals and tile work the hotel is thoughtfully decorated in keeping with the traditional style and history of the building. Rooms are styled in a local design with traditional, antique furniture. Responsible travel.

With local people, culture and eco-systems in mind, responsible travel and sustainable tourism are at the core of Wild Frontiers. We believe that a successful trip not only delivers a unique and unsurpassable journey for our travellers but also benefits the people and places we visit. When designing our tours, we actively seek out experiences that have a positive impact on the communities and precious environments we visit - from supporting social enterprises; resting our heads in rural homestays; and eating at locally owned restaurants; to helping fund conservation projects that protect wildlife and their habitats.  Visit the Responsible Travel area of our website to read more, including the work of the Wild Frontiers Foundation through which we fundraise to aid community empowerment and education projects.

Challenging Perceptions of Iran

When discussing Responsible Travel with our local suppliers in Iran, the conclusion was that simply travelling to this largely misunderstood country was in fact responsible. That way, you see the beauty of the country for yourself, meet its welcoming locals and taste their delicious cuisine. In addition, all our Iran tours are locally-led – investing in the people that form a part of the communities we visit, opening up conversations and sharing stories with new friends.

Reducing Single Use Plastic

We recognise the environmental issues and challenges around single-use plastic in many countries we visit and are actively working with our partners on the ground to reduce plastic waste on our tours and within the hotels and restaurants we visit. You can help to reduce your personal plastic waste by taking a refillable, filtered water bottle with you on your trip. Filtered water bottles can be refilled from water sources including your hotel room and restaurant taps, drinking fountains and refill stations. Every time you refill your bottle without the use of single-use plastic, you will be helping to reduce waste and protect the environment. Filtered Water Bottles | Wild Frontiers (wildfrontierstravel.com)

Getting There

If you would like us to send you a quote for the suggested tour flights or on any alternative flight that may suit you better, please let us know, noting that for our US clients, we will most likely refer you to one of our preferred partners. For this trip our suggested flights from the UK (subject to change) are shown below.

If you wish to arrange your own flights you are completely free to do so and in this case we can arrange any transfers or supplementary accommodation that you may require. However please note that if you are planning on making your own flight arrangements, we recommend that you first check with us to see if the trip is guaranteed. We then suggest that you purchase flights that are flexible and ideally refundable as due to the nature of adventure travel, itineraries and destination accessibility can change at any time. For more information, please refer to our booking conditions.

Visas & Vaccinations

VISAS Visas are necessary for many of the destinations we travel to and while we aim to provide you with the most up-to-date information, requirements frequently change and as such for the latest advice we advise that you check with the relevant embassies or contact a reputable visa agency. More details can be found here -  https://www.wildfrontierstravel.com/visa

For this tour UK passport holders currently require require a visa for Iran. For those resident in the UK, please note that this will need to be applied for in person through the Iranian Consulate in London. Passports should ideally be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the end of your tour.

Non-UK passport holders or non-UK residents should contact the relevant embassies for individual requirements. It should also be noted that anyone with a passport showing evidence of having visited Israel (including having entered or left Jordan/Egypt from posts which are known to border Israel) are likely to be denied a visa for Iran. Moreover as of January 2016 US policy (subject to change) has stated that anyone wishing to travel to or via the USA is required to apply for a US visa (rather than an ESTA) if they have travelled to Iran since March 2011. The process is fairly straightforward and you can read more about it here –  www.wildfrontierstravel.com/us-visa - but this is just something you will need to aware of if you have future plans to travel to or via the US. VACCINATIONS & ADDITIONAL TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS Vaccinations: There are no mandatory vaccination requirements for travellers to Iran. Malaria is present in some parts of Iran and precautions are essential. For all destinations, please make sure you are up-to-date with any standard vaccinations (e.g. MMR, Hepatitis A, Tetanus) as recommended by your local health care provider. For the most up-to-date information on all vaccination requirements and the most suitable anti-malarial tablets, we strongly suggest that you seek advice from your local travel centre or consult an official travel health website such as  www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk  or  www.travelhealthpro.org.uk Covid Testing: No mandatory testing is currently required for vaccinated or unvaccinated travellers. If necessary further details will be sent out to you upon booking, however ensuring that correct and valid visas & vaccinations are obtained remains the sole responsibility of the client.

If you have more time available, why not arrive early to adjust to a new time zone or just to get a feel for the country before your tour starts? Alternatively, you might choose to allow a few extra days after the tour to relax or to undertake some further exploration. The choice is completely yours and we can usually arrange anything from simply additional accommodation and transfers to full tailor-made itineraries*. Please contact the office for more details and to discuss your requirements.

*Please note bespoke, tailor-made itineraries need to be a minimum of 7 days and we can only offer them in countries where we have a tailor-made expert

Governmental Travel Advice

Many governments issue advice which highlights potential hazards their citizens might experience when travelling abroad. We strongly suggest you refer to your country’s particular advisory site before booking and contact us if you have any queries or concerns. Click to follow links to the advice of the British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) or the US State Department . Non-UK citizens should consult the travel advice of their respective governments.

The FCDO sometimes advises against certain parts of this itinerary. Wild Frontiers has many years’ experience of running trips which contravene FCDO advice but these decisions that are never taken lightly and are always taken in conjunction with our local partners after extensive consultation. As part of the booking process, you will need to sign a disclaimer to confirm you have read the advice, that you are still happy to travel and that you will obtain travel insurance which is not invalidated by the FCDO advice. For more information, please see the Insurance section or contact us. Non-UK clients should be sure to check the travel advice of their own governments as well as the small print of their insurance policies. Should you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Key Information

The weather conditions can be extremely varied in Iran, however, spring and autumn are the best times to visit when the days are mainly warm and sunny. Expect daytime temperatures in the 20s (C) but nights may be cooler at this time of year.

IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?

It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. All our tours have a fitness rating as a guideline but you should check the day-by-day itinerary carefully. In certain instances we may ask you to complete a travel questionnaire before confirming your booking in order to ensure your suitability. Should you have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour then please contact the office.

KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER

Anyone in a reasonable state of health, with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour. However, please bear in mind that there is a reasonable amount of walking involved with the sightseeing.

Please note that if you are a British, USA or Canadian passport holder in order to comply with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) visa regulations it is a mandatory requirement for us to book an airport transfer and a guide to accompany you for any additional time spent in Iran separately to the group. You should be aware that securing adequate insurance for travel to Iran can be challenging, especially for clients of certain nationalities and/or age groups. As such before booking a trip to Iran we would strongly suggest that you fully investigate your insurance options to ensure you are both able to secure suitable insurance and are happy with the level of cover available to you. For more information, please refer to the Insurance section below.

Some clients feel that the variety of food available in Iranian restaurants can get a bit monotonous, but our tour leaders will do their best to vary the menu as much as is possible. Please be advised that on this trip vegetarians and those with special dietary requirements can be catered for, but the selection and variety is likely to be limited. It should also be noted that Iran is a 'dry' country and it is forbidden to take alcohol into the country.

Women should be aware that it will be necessary to follow Iranian dress code whenever in public places, which means being fully covered and wearing a headscarf.

THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL

We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.

TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS

As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!

Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation, but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip.

On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour.

Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.

Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. In addition, you should be aware that securing adequate insurance for travel to Iran can be challenging, especially for clients of certain nationalities and/or age groups. Accordingly before booking a trip to Iran we would strongly suggest that you fully investigate your insurance options to ensure you are both able to secure suitable insurance and are happy with the level of cover available to you. Please see the Insurance section for more details or feel free to contact us for more information.

Your Curiosities Answered: Discover More About Your Persian Adventure

The ideal time for traveling to Iran is typically from April to May and from September to early November. However, due to Iran’s vastness, it’s possible to travel there at any time of the year. For example, during July and August, the west and northwest regions like Tabriz, Kurdistan, Kermanshah, or Hamedan are preferable due to cooler weather. These areas can be mixed with classic routes for a varied experience. The months of November to February are best for visiting southern Iran, known for its natural beauty and tourist attractions. Destinations like Qeshm, Kish, Chabahar, and Bushehr are considered must-see places during this period.

The official currency of Iran is the Iranian Rial (IRR). However, in everyday transactions, Iranians commonly use the term ‘Toman’, where 1 Toman equals 10 Rials. Prices are typically quoted in Tomans. For ease of communication, the term ‘thousand’ is often omitted. For example, a price quoted as 50 Tomans is generally understood to be 50,000 Tomans, translating to 500,000 Rials. This informal method of pricing is a standard practice in Iran, essential for visitors to understand to avoid confusion in transactions.

In Iran, credit cards and international debit cards such as MasterCard or Visa are not supported. However, it is easy to exchange money at the airport, banks, and exchange offices in the cities, or you can choose to carry your money in cash. For those who find carrying cash difficult or insecure,  some companies provide local debit cards.

It’s important to note that some souvenir shops may accept MasterCard , so it could be beneficial to bring your card along when traveling to Iran.

Yes, Iran is known for being both safe and hospitable for tourists. There are no major conflicts or significant security issues that impact tourist areas. Visitors often experience a warm and welcoming attitude from the Iranian people, renowned for their hospitality. However, as with traveling to any country, it’s advisable to be mindful of your belongings and money to prevent petty crimes like pickpocketing. Normal safety precautions, as you would exercise in any travel destination, are recommended to ensure a pleasant and secure visit.

From Ancient Persia To Modern Iran

With over 40 UNESCO World Heritage sites, Iran is a treasure house for some of the most beautiful architecture on the planet. Exquisite architecture reigns supreme. The sublime is the turquoise-tiled domes and lofty minarets at Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan and rightly so but there are utterly magnificent rivals in other parts of the country. Many might think that this eternal beauty is restricted to Islamic monuments like mosques. NO architecture and decorative arts glitter in Caravanserais, gardens, palaces and Bazars.

Kerman Shah Nematollah Vali

Nasir al mulk mosque, why choose us.

The unique culture of Iran and the sweep of its history are revealed in this evocative travelogue of an American family searching for a lost friend in the country of their youth.

Growing up in Tehran in the 1960s, Terence Ward and his brothers were watched over by Hassan, the family’s cook, housekeeper, and cultural guide. After an absence of forty years, Ward embarked on a pilgrimage with his family in search of Hassan. Taking us across the landscape of Iran, he plumbs its unimaginably rich past. Insightful, informative, and moving,  Searching for Hassan  enhances our understanding of the Iran with the story of a family who came to love and admire Iran through their deep affection for its people.

Covering one thousand years of history and an area stretching from the Atlantic to the borders of India and China, Robert Hillenbrand incorporates all the latest discoveries and interpretations in this authoritative guide to the arts of Islam.

From the extraordinary virtuosity of Persian painting in the fifteenth century to the vivid ceramic tradition of Ottoman Iznik―Hillenbrand does justice to both the highlights and the ongoing evolution of the full range of Islamic arts. Supported by a glossary of Islamic terms, a time line, and maps, this book traces the architecture, calligraphy, book illumination, painting, ceramics, textiles, and metalwork of a vastly accomplished and influential civilization.

The Safavid dynasty, which reigned from the late fifteenth to the eighteenth century, links medieval with modern Iran. The Safavids witnessed wide-ranging developments in politics, warfare, science, philosophy, religion, art and architecture. If you remember, one of the highlights of our trip to Iran was Isfahan and most of the monuments we visited there dated back to Safavid period. This book show us a clear picture of social life and politics at the time of Safavid kings in Persia.

The first work to present the riches of all Persian architecture in a single volume, this important book is the result of a lifetime of study by a world recognized authority on Persian art and architecture. Most of the black and white illustrations come from the author’s private archives and have never before been published. Of the 33 color plates, 32 are the harvest of two special expeditions carried on in Persian in 1964 and here reproduced for the first time.

The Cambridge History of Iran is a multi-volume survey of Iranian history published by Cambridge University Press. It was originally published in 1968. It is one of the main source for Persian history, it is recommended for those who are interested in more in-depth knowledge of Persian history. So compared to the book above, it is much more detailed.

The Conference of the Birds or Speech of the Birds, is a long poem of approximately 4500 lines written in Persian by the poet Farid ud-Din Attar, who is commonly known as Attar of Nishapur. During our trip to Iran we talked about the subjects like Sufism and mysticism and Persian mystic poetry. This book talks about philosophical and mystic issues in the language of poetry and Attar very beautifully has dramatized these issues in his stories of the birds.

One of the main aspects of Persian culture that was quite obvious in our tour of Iran was Persian cooking. I promised you to introduce you a good cook book on Persian cooking and I think this is book is the most complete book in English. It is like a treasury of 240 classical and regional Iranian recipes. 120 color photographs intertwined with descriptions of ancient and modern ceremonies, poetry, folk tales, etc.

Journeys in Iran is a travel book written by British travel writer, Jason Elliot. I really like the deeper understanding that Jason Elliot offers in this book the way he analyze Persian art and architecture is very interesting. If you get this book or borrow it from the library, do not forget to read the chapter on Isfahan and the last pages about the Iranian cultural and scientific influence in the history of the world.

Jewel-like colors, rich patterns, precise execution and virtuoso craftsmanship characterize the best of Persian miniature painting: the perfect realization of an ideal world. This fully illustrated book provides a concise account of Persian painting from about 1300 to 1900. Beginning with the materials and tools which enabled the artists to achieve their remarkable effects, Sheila Canby goes on to survey the stylistic development of Persian painting and the influences upon it of over six centuries of Iran’s turbulent history.

Award-winning travel writer Jill Worrall, with her friend Reza Mirkhalaf, a leading tour manager from Tehran, describe an Iran the world has forgotten about. During their journey, Jill and Reza explore the caravanserai that were once a vital part of the silk routes that once crossed Persia, while also encountering many ordinary Iranians. In writing this book, Jill wanted to write about Iran in a way that would give readers a greater insight into the landscapes, landmarks and people of the country at a grassroots level. The title reflects the fact that they were two people of different sexes, different religions and cultures traveling together, yet keeping their travels harmoniously on course. It also refers to the many dichotomies of Iranian life. In the course of their travels, Jill and Reza visit the holiest city in Iran, Mashhad, paddle in the Persian Gulf, pass close by the borders of both Afghanistan and Iraq, stay with local families, play in the snow near Mt Ararat, pray in mosques, read poetry in Shiraz and eat ice creams in Isfahan.

Iran, or Persia as it was formerly known, has been a melting pot of civilizations for centuries. This is an essential book both for visitors to Iran and for those simply with a thirst to learn about and understand this diverse and beautiful land. Travel facts and tips combine with chapters on each of the country’s provinces and sections on Islamic art, architecture, and religion.

This is a fantastic guide book for the historical and Archeological sites in Iran. Though written in 1970s and it might look outdated but it is still one of the main sources for a better understanding of Historical monuments in Iran. Precise information, excellent descriptions and easy to read texts are the main reasons why this book is very popular among visitors to Iran.

Dargavs

The ancient architectural complex in Dargavs in the Republic of North Ossetia definitely deserves to be more well known and would even seem to be a good candidate for full UNESCO World Heritage status. This area has been inhabited since the bronze age and it is thought to be the centre of what was known as Tagauria - which believed to be a society formed of the descendants of Taga, and perhaps even Taga himself lived here. The buildings on the hill were never used as homes, they are in fact tombs and the whole site is a graveyard. For this reason it is often referred to as the City of the Dead.

It is not known for sure when they were built but some experts believe the first ones date back to the 12th century. In total there are just under 100 of them of varying sizes and at the top of the hill is a watchtower. The largest tombs have three layers and each layer has its own window to allow the air to circulate. A warning before you look into these windows though: the bodies are still there. Some now are just skeletons while others have mummified to some degree. What is especially interesting is that some of them are in specially made boats, even though the neighbouring River Gizeldon is not navigable. It is assumed that these boats were needed to take the souls into the next world. In times of plague, those infected would spend their last days in the tombs alongside their dead relatives. All in all this is certainly one of the most mysterious, and let’s be honest creepy, sites in Russia.

Hospitable and sunny Vladikavkaz, the capital of Russia’s Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, captures the heart with its colorful mountain landscapes, historic architecture, kind residents and vibrant local culture.

The city is located on the banks of the Terek River and is almost completely surrounded by mountains which, along with unique Northern Caucasian architecture, make this urban landscape rather irresistible. Upon arrival, luxurious mansions, unusual architecture, parks, museums, theaters, retro trams and cozy eateries serving famous Ossetian meat pies all clamber for visitors’ attention, often pulling them back for further visits.

As the largest city in Russia’s southern Caucasus, Vladikavkaz is the start and ending point for many regional tourist routes, so after enjoying the city sites be sure to continue onward to the surrounding natural attractions .

History of Vladikavkaz

Vladikavkaz Fortress was built in 1784 to provide protection for the Russian Empire along its southern border with Georgia. The name Vladikavkaz means “I own the Caucasus” and was chosen by Catherine the Great after the Russian Empire extended its power into the region. The fort served a vital protective role for many years even as wealthy merchants and retirees began investing in the region’s development, and in 1860 Vladikavkaz attained the status of city. Later in the 19th century, newly laid rail lines in the region led to an economic boom and to an influx of ethnic minorities whose diverse houses of worship and unique architecture can still be seen in the city today.

Vladikavkaz was awarded the title of City of Military Glory after successfully fighting off invading Nazis in World War II. Today it remains an ethnically diverse city with hundreds of Art Noveau and historic buildings. Although no longer a military outpost, Vladikavkaz remains a soulful city with a rich cultural life . Vladikavkaz Architecture

Vladikavkaz, Russia

The city of Vladikavkaz is famous for its architecture, and for good reason. The city grew rapidly between the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century due to the influx of high-ranking retired military personnel who built mansions and summer houses with their hefty pensions. It is believed that the presence of around 75 such individuals led to Vladikavkaz’s historic nickname "City of retired generals".

Today the historic city center is a chain of cozy avenues lined with many of these elegant mansions.

Prospekt Mira

Prospekt Mira (Mira Avenue) in Vladikavkaz is a kilometer-long boulevard which serves as the main pedestrian thoroughfare for the historic city center. It promises a pleasant walk amid slender two- and three-story merchants’ mansions, inviting coffee shops and other convenient photo opps.

Vladikavkaz, Russia

Mukhtarov Mosque

Mukhtarov Mosque , also called Sunni Mosque, is an unmistakable landmark of Vladikavkaz. This delicately carved structure appears to have been lifted from the pages of a fairy tale and is often likened to Cairo mosques of the 10th-12th centuries. Built in the early 20th century, it remains an active mosque to this day.

Imperial Hotel

The main hotel in Vladikavkaz, Imperial Hotel on Mira Avenue has long been a city symbol. The fashionable accommodation was built in 1896, and although there were already 16 hotels in Vladikavkaz at the time, it quickly rose to prominence as the hotel of choice for the city’s most honored guests.

Other famous buildings in central Vladikavkaz include:

  • Oganov Mansion (12 Mira Avenue)
  • Mansion of the Lawyer Boehme (Pavlovsky Lane)
  • Yastremsky Mansion (33 Sovetov Street)
  • Khudyakovs’ Mansion (11 Mira Avenue)
  • English Consulate Building (31 Lenin Street)

As you walk through the center of Vladikavkaz, you cannot miss these unique Northern Caucasian structures which preserve the memory of a bygone era .

Museums and Theaters

Many travelers who come to North Ossetia either visit Vladikavkaz in transit or skip it altogether in their rush to reach the Caucasus Mountains. However, it is here that life can be experienced in full swing and many options for leisurely activities can be found. Museums, theaters, cinemas, concert halls, parks and family entertainment venue all await you in Vladikavkaz.

At Opera and Ballet Theater , one of the largest musical theaters in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, you can enjoy quality opera and ballet performances by professional dancers, singers and musicians.

Vakhtangov Theater is another large public theater that offers performances for both adult audiences and young viewers. The theater opened in 1871 to host performances produced by outstanding Russian playwrights, including an early performance of "Masquerade" by Mikhail Lermontov. Mikhail Bulgakov staged his earliest plays at Vakhtangov Theater, which regularly hosts renowned Russian actors and theatrical figures to this day.

Narty Horse Theater offers highly unusual performances which combine elements of choreography and circus art subtly interwoven with a dramatic plot. This performance will definitely appeal to family members of all ages!

At the North Ossetian Philharmonic , exemplary performances by an all-male choir are held regularly.

National Museum of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania is a museum, research center and exhibition complex with several branches, the main one of which is located in the city center at 11 Mira Avenue. Come get acquainted with a variety of historical findings which date back centuries. In total, the museum complex houses more than 4,000 exhibits which shed light on the history of the region and the peculiarities of the local culture.

M. S. Tuganov Art Museum , located at 12 Mira Avenue next to National Museum of the Republic, has amassed a large collection of works of fine art, including pieces by Levitan, Aivazovsky, Repin, Bryullov, Vereshchagin, Shishkin, Korovin and other acclaimed artists.

Vladikavkaz, Russia

21st-Century Entertainment

As in any other major city in Russia, Vladikavkaz is home to a whole host of modern entertainment venues, including quests, laser clubs, time cafes and more .

Outdoor Vladikavkaz Attractions

While there are plenty of manmade attractions to see in Vladikavkaz, outdoor adventures also await travelers, both beyond city limits and even before you depart the mountain metropolis.

Table Mountain

Table Mountain , which at 3000 meters is the highest ridge in the Caucasus, rises above Vladikavkaz as an unmistakable feature of its natural landscape. Table Mountain is depicted on the coat of arms of both the Republic of Ingushetia and Vladikavkaz, for it is located on the border between the two entities. Due in part to the 4th-8th century ruins located on Table Mountain, North Caucasus residents have long viewed it as symbolic of Olympus.

Vladikavkaz, Russia

Kosta Khetagurov Park

Kosta Khetagurov Park , the oldest park in the entire North Caucasus, consists of upper and lower terraces along the Terek River, shady pathways which provide welcome relief in the summer heat and a calming lake populated with swans. Cafes, boat rides and other entertainment options combine to create a fun and restful atmosphere .

Vladikavkaz Souvenirs

Like the rest of the Caucasus, the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania offers guests an exquisite array of gifts so you can carry the memory of a Vladikavkaz vacation home with you.

Among the most popular gifts are wine vessels in the shape of a horn, which often include an engraving on a metal border and may be either decorative or unpainted. Dishes, coasters, potholders, fragrant spices and delicious local pies are also popular souvenir choices from Vladikavkaz.

Specialty gifts for men include leather belts, wallets and decorative metal plates, all of which are made with embossed patterns, ornamentation or symbols of the republic such as horfreses, leopards, deer or double-headed eagles.

Women can be presented with openwork earrings, bracelets, pendants, combs and hair clips made of wood, as well as textiles or wool shawls in colorful oriental patterns. Ceramic products suitable for everyday use include coffee cups, small teapots, serving bowls and elegant jugs adorned with national motifs.

National costumes for both genders reflect the vibrancy of the North Caucasian culture of Vladikavkaz and can make an excellent souvenir for relatives and friends.
