We ‘ve got the 3 days expedition with Tribe Banua’s Mike team . We sailed from El Nido to Coron passing through breathtaking islands. You see better spots respect to the usual island hopping tours, cleaner and emptier , but you have to be ready for adventure. Food by Rowee was truly delicious and abundant , the crew was knowledgeable, fun and sweet. Highly recommended

Guide to the Philippines has really helped me to get around Palawan, and always making sure if I was comfortable. That was really nice! Hotels -Hue hotel was perfect! Very nice and comfortable, and great styling. The food was super, and the staff nice. The breakfast options were amazing!!! -For the budget option i was supposed to have another hotel, but because it was so busy, I had to switch to Marianne hotel. A hotel that is not finished yet, and still under construction, so no pool and quite some noise and building site smells. Room was all right, but the cleaning could have been better (water stains on mirror and such). Breakfast was not so good, the second day I even chose to have it somewhere else. Transport The transport was arranged perfectly! Nice drivers and on time. Tours - underground river was amazing! Otherworldly! We were lucky because of the weather, other ones were canceled. Lunch was ok. Apparently people could choose an add on to this tour, and go ziplining. Some chose to do this, resulting in having to wait for quite a while. Could have done without that, -honda bay tour was super! The lunch they prepared was absolutely lovely, and the guide took well care of us. We saw some lovely islands and beautiful beaches! Good atmosphere! - Tour C El Nido : i was supposed to be on another tour but in all confusion, i ender up on this one. It was too crowded, and the boat with 30 capacity had 43 tourists on it. After asking, they had to get extra life jackets from another boat. It was not comfortable with so many people on the boat and on the islands. It really was mass tourism, but at least I saw the beautiful nature! All in all, I am very happy I had the help of Guide to the Philippines and would definitely book again! But no more El Nido! Thank you!

Notice of itinerary change arrived the day before our tour started! Despite having booked and paid 2 months previous, island flights had not been booked. This meant two boat tours on successive days, no rest day and first destination cut short. Too long at the following hotel ( which had a bad drain smell) and a late flight to Manila , this meant hanging around and then arriving 8pm in the dark. Extremely unprofessional. We asked for assistance to book four days following our island tour, a reservation was made and cancelled on our way back to Manila, we made our own reservation. The on site agents were polite and punctual. The weather was nice.

While El Nido and Puerto Princesa mostly offer luxury 5 star resorts, budget accommodation is still easy to find. Same as with Coron – although most hotels will be simple bungalows, you can still book an all inclusive beachfront resort.

Palawan travel essentials.

• Capital : Puerto Princesa
• Flights : There are 3 different airports in Palawan: El Nido Airport, Puerto Princesa City Airport, Francisco Reyes Airport in Busuanga. There are several daily flights from Manila to Puerto Princesa and Busuanga, and 1 daily flight from Cebu to Puerto Princesa. Reaching El Nido directly is more complicated, as only boutique airline run that line namely Airswift. We work with these companies and such flights are included in the packages we offer.
• Ferry : Although there are ferries from Manila, and other destinations to Palawan, it is not recommended at all to take them due to Palawan’s distance from other neighboring islands and provinces. However, taking a ferry is sometimes the only way to get from one island to another. For additional information and help, contact us directly.
• Getting around : The usual way tourists get around Palawan is by vans or buses. There are many vans from different companies which travel from Puerto Princesa to El Nido and back. Trips take between 5 to 6 hours. Taking a bus is slower and more comfortable, but the trip takes between 6 to 8 hours.
• Best time to visit : October to May is the high season in Palawan. The north east winds bring a dry climate to this area. The south east winds bring storms and rains to this region lasting from June to September.
• Nightlife : Palawan is the destination for nature lovers, and for those who seek to escape from society for a while. It is not a good destination for those who like to party. Night life in Palawan is limited to some bars and restaurants you can visit, drink in, and meet new friends. It is only common in the provincial capital Puerto Princesa.
• Local festivals and holidays : Palawan is known for its people’s love of festivals, and therefore there are plenty of festivals in the province.  The Baragatan sa Palawan (every third week of June), is a festivity where numerous people from all of the provinces of Palawan flock to the city of Puerto Princesa to take part in the grand parade. There you can watch dancers in flashy costumes and body paint dancing on the street, celebrating the establishment of the government of Palawan. In the Kulambo festival (March 15 – March 18) El Nido town’s people are parading the streets in colorful costumes, showcasing local delicacies and crafts. When booking with us we will let you know if your travel dates coincide with local festivals. This will give you a unique experience that many travelers to Palawan don’t get.

How to get there?

Taking a ferry to Palawan is a complete waste of time, so the only reasonable way of reaching the island is by air. There are 3 gateways – El Nido Airport, Puerto Princesa City Airport, and Francisco Reyes Airport in Busuanga.

There are several daily flights from Manila to Puerto Princesa and Busuanga. There is also a flight from Cebu city to Puerto Princesa and both flights take 1 hour and 15 minutes. Only Airswift fly to El Nido from Manila daily. This aircraft is smaller than most commercial airlines and can only accommodate 50 passengers. The flight takes 55 minutes and the ticket is very pricey.

Up until now there were no flights connecting El Nido to Puerto Princesa. Land transport was the only way if you are on a budget, however there is also an option to make your transfer into private. Still, taking a flight is a great option for people on a tight itinerary, as it’ll only take you 20 minutes instead of the grueling 5-6 hours van ride.

If you are coming from Boracay, there is also a flight from El Nido at least once daily. With a very limited schedule of flight, it gets sold out quickly as  a lot of tourists find it very convenient to travel to these ideal places with a direct flight instead to connect to another island and to travel the whole day.

What to do in Palawan?

To get a full taste of Palawan, it’s best to visit a few different locations. The most popular destinations on the island are Puerto Princesa, El Nido and Coron . Apart from those, there are many less famous locations, also full of wonderful attractions – such as Port Barton for example. Below we present a quick overview for each area, which will help you figure out how to best plan your trip.

These three destinations are all among the best in the Philippines. The average price is about the same. El Nido and Coron are superior to Puerto Princesa when it comes to island hopping, diving and snorkeling. Puerto Princesa on the other hand is much more tourist friendly – if you’re traveling with children it’s a better choice, and will save you all a lot of hassle.

To summarize, Puerto Princesa is most suitable for families and older people, since you can get almost the same things, but much more conveniently. El Nido is perfect for a romantic vacation, and for adventurers too. Coron is the roughest of the three, and will suit tourists who don’t mind a more spartan vacation. Puerto Princesa – The Best Destination for Families

Puerto Princesa is most renowned for the  underground river national park – a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the new 7 wonders of nature. It’s an 8.2 km (5 miles) long underground cave, famous for its major formations of stalactites and stalagmites. Since the underground river connects directly to the sea, it’s home to an extremely large variety of plants and animals, all concentrated in a small area.

This place is perfect for families and first timers to the Philippines. Getting around is very convenient and there are a lot of child friendly attractions. You can visit the crocodile farm, butterfly garden, Mitra’s ranch and more. You can even go on a firefly watching boat tour through the mangrove forests. Another great attraction is island hopping around Honda Bay. This scenic bay sprinkled with tropical islands is ideal for visiting several islands on a day tour. Lilu Island and Cowrie Island both offer world class beach experience. It’s also a perfect place for snorkeling. Diving is also possible at Puerto Princesa, but we suggest going to El Nido or Coron for a better diving experience.

Two nights is the very minimum required to fully appreciate what this place has to offer, but ideally you’d want to spend 3 nights and 4 days there. Of course, longer stays are warmly encouraged – you can easily spend a whole week here if you’d like. El Nido – Romantic Vacation and Amazing Nature

Peaceful El Nido town is full of beachfront resorts, ranging from the most expensive in the country to cheap hostels and bungalows. Luxury resorts are mostly out of town on private beaches or islands. The most exclusive resorts are all inclusive and only accessible by helicopter or boat. If you wish to stay in El Nido, we advise to book in advance.  Booking with us will get you the best deals  and most value for money so don’t hesitate to call us.

Island hopping in El Nido is a must-do activity. Miniloc Island with its three lagoons is one of the most beautiful and most popular spots. Miniloc is a private island, so the residential part of the island is limited only for resort guests. The lagoons however, are available to the public.

You can only access the secret lagoon by swimming underwater or with a kayak – but it’s worth doing so for the spectacular views. Tall limestone cliffs and crystal blue waters await those who dare explore this secret paradise. El Nido is also one of the best diving spots in the Philippines  so we strongly encourage trying that. If you haven’t done any diving before, you can always try, and even get certified in El Nido. Not many people are lucky enough to be certified in a place where the underwater scene is as spectacular as the landscape surrounding it.

Coron – Best Dive Spots and Secluded Beaches

The easiest way to get to Coron is by flight from Manila, though a ferry from El Nido is also a common route. The fast craft (4-5 hours) is also an option. Most resorts are specialized dive resorts, typically in the smaller islands.

Coron is best known for its breathtaking island hopping, and for being one of the best places in the world for wreck diving (and diving in general). Even if you don’t dive, snorkeling is enough since the water are just teeming with life. You can take one of the tours provided by local shops and resorts or let us build a custom made island hopping tour for you.

If diving is your top priority Coron is the best place to be . You’ll find great diving sites for both novice or experienced divers. The most famous diving spots are the Japanese ship wrecks from WW2 – frozen in time underwater. Other types of diving are also available, like free diving and spearfishing – we’ll be happy to introduce you to the clubs offering these activities.

Other fun activities include hiking up the stairs of Mt. Tapyas and climbing Mt. Darala (it will take 5 hours of hike to reach the summit where you can get a spectacular view of the bay); kayaking, mountain biking, motorbiking, kitesurfing and more. Coron is perfect for those who seek a quieter environment, and an opportunity to admire nature. If you are into diving, you must include this place in your Palawan diving package. But in any case, consider spending at least a few nights in Coron, to experience a different side of Palawan, away from the more crowded tourists spots and beaches. Off the beaten track – Palawan’s less famous attraction

We’ve already presented the most popular locations Palawan has to offer. Still, we are always on the look out for even more exotic and audacious activities that may interest our customers. Traveling from El Nido to Coron is also an adventure in itself. You can do this journey in a most marvelous way with a bangka (a traditional Filipino boat). The tour was absolutely fantastic! Lini was a great guide and made sure that I was having the best time. She was knowledgeable and, through this, she showed she had a passion for the Philippines. She made great recommendations for local restaurants and bars. The local guides that assisted Lini were all fun and very informative, adding that extra level of cultural knowledge. The activities were brilliant! The prison visit, island hopping days, cultural day, private island stays, and included massage all exceeded expectations and I honestly had the best time. The optional activities were also fantastic, the scuba diving in Coron was outstanding and totally recommended. The accommodation was good throughout with large, clean and functional rooms. Many of the meals were included which is always an added bonus. The transport between the locations was in a clean bus but it was a rather full as we had 22 people on the tour. The included transfer to the airport on the last day of the tour was also very useful and arranged by Lini so it was stress-free and seamless.

A Week In Palawan, Philippines

We were very happy with the itinerary and that we had our contact Marice at hand to provide backup incase of any problems. Local tour operators did an excellent job and Marice was in contact daily to provide updates on pickup and tour times. Accomodation was very good especially the hotel in Coron which exceeded our expectations. Both island hopping tours were amazing as were the lunches provided. Would definitely recommend the week in Palawan tour.

10 Days Do The Philippines Adventure Tour - Palawan Islands

Just finished the 10 days Philippines tour carried out by Do You Travel. At the beginning, when we figured out that most participants in our group of travelers are single and/or much younger than us, my wife (62) and I (68) thought we had comitted a mistake selecting this trip. The itinerary, the organisation and, above all, very positive group dynamics proved us wrong! We think the biggest merit for this goes to our tour guide Jovain Orlina! We were observing this young man handling complex organisational issues and even more complex (inter)personal challenges with remarkable ease and with passion at the same time. He had a nice word for everyone, open smile in every situation and he managed to reach full identification with the group as a whole. Jovain became part of us. He resolved all problems with skill and dedication. He made us feel relaxed and confident, he opened our hearts and, together with other members of the group, created relaxed mood throughout the tour. Some distracting events like, for example, overall disatisfaction of one group member with the tour, Jovain dealt with patience, in wise and thoughtful manner. However there is much room for significant improvement of one important aspects of the tour. Accomodation could and should be better! The food was for the most part ok, but some selected hotels were not even able to serve a decent breakfast. Rooms were small and in some cases not very clean. Overall, great tour, great group and excellent guide made us enjoy this trip a lot. The best part of the tour was a 3-day cruising expedition from El Nido to Coron on board of Tropical Paradise 7 boat. Excellent cook, skillfull, discrete and attentive crew made us feel thrilled and safe. This was a memorable experience, indeed. Thank you Jovain, thank you Do You Travel. ????

This was a great itinerary! My only regret is that it wasn't longer - Palawan is beautiful and I didn't want to leave. El Nido was gorgeous and in my opinion better than Puerto Princesa. The hostel in El Nido (Our Melting Pot) was great - super social and full of young backpackers. It was also on the main strip, so there were loads of restaurants and bars, and it was about 5 min walk away from the beach. The tour there is just fab and the lagoons are beautiful. Lunch was included (there was a grill on the back of the boat, so we just anchored up in a quiet stretch of water and ate there). In Puerto I did the underground river tour which was amazing and I've never seen anything quite like it. The tour ended a little early and we were given the option to do a zipline from one island to another - so much fun and definitely recommended if you have the chance! The hotel in Puerto was a B&B and was very homely and friendly, however it was a little further away from the centre of town so there were not as many things to do within walking distance. Be aware that this tour is very self-directed and a lot of the time you have to get yourself from Point A to Point B - i.e. you are not ferried around in a group. The tours and transfers are public tours so you're in a group which changes every day, and not in a consistent tour group (which was totally fine for me, but just to be aware of). The transfers between Puerto and El Nido took around 5-6 hours in a van, the roads are very windy and bumpy so it wasn't the most comfortable - but there is a stop half way, and the views along the coastal road were really great. Overall - a great intro to Palawan with some amazing sights.

This was one of the best trips I've done. The itinerary was the perfect mix of activities and down time & I felt, hit the key places I'd travel to if doing it fully solo. Whilst the tour itself and the people I met on it were a big part of me having the best time, it wouldn't have been the same without our tour leader Andri. He helped join the group together before we even started and made everyone feel included once we got there. He was the best mix of chilled and reliable, super knowledgeable and put the needs of the group first like the wonderfully caring human he is. We always knew what we were doing and when and it felt like he made the trip run so smoothly - I only had to worry about turning up and having a good time. If you're thinking about booking this DO IT (and pray you'll have Andri has your leader)

The City of Puerto Princesa has a lot more to offer. Its attractions range from historical sites to natural parks. There are also tourist attractions that offer hands-on experiences and pasalubongs. Indeed, the Puerto Princess City Tour is interesting and worthwhile.

Plaza cuartel, cathedral & baywalk  – check-out three attractions with one running tour. the plaza cuartel is a city park and also a historical site. it is the palawan massacre site during the world war ii. still, present at the park are remnants of an old garrison and tunnels. next to the park, is the old yet beautiful cathedral of the city. along the way, you will pass by the baywalk. it is where most locals and some tourists spend their free time – chatting, eating, or simply watching the sunset., mitra’s ranch – owned by the late senator ramon mitra. this tourist destination is located at the sta. monica heights. it is open to the public and its view deck offers a majestic view of the whole city., binuatan creations – a factory of traditional weaving where guests can participate in a hands-on experience. guests can also buy various souvenirs at binuatan creations., baker’s hill – also located at the sta. monica heights. this small bakery then is actually now a theme park. nevertheless, it is still best known for their delicious and reasonably-priced baked goodies. tourists can also buy food products pasalubong at baker’s hill., palawan wildlife rescue and conservation center or palawan butterfly garden – the palawan wildlife rescue and conservation center studies palawan endangered species. although it is used to be the crocodile farming institute, the place also houses other animals. inside is a mini-zoo where several species of mammals, birds, and reptiles are also found. the palawan butterfly garden conserves native butterflies. it is a great place to have a closer interaction with butterflies and nature itself. there are also different species of animals in the garden such as walking sticks and scorpions., underground river tour.

The Underground River is part of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. It is the most popular attraction in Puerto Princesa. It is even known and admired globally. In 1999, the UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site. And in 2012, it was voted as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. The Underground River Tour starts from a short hike or boat ride at Sabang Town unto the Puerto Princesa Underground River.

Hi, Can anyone give advise or recommend a van service to Puerto Princesa that only takes 8-12 passengers and doesn’t pick up along the way?

Our van on the way here stopped every 10 minutes to pick up/drop off and had 17 people at some points and we don’t want to make the same mistake again.

Daytripper has the best reputation.

Hi tommo, we had 3 trips with Daytripper during 6 weeks in Palawan recently, and they have not upgraded their 2x 10 seater Vans or 12 seater coach for several years, but it has been under new ownership since October last year, the service is still great, but unfortunately they still only operate the same 3 vehicles only between PPS and El Nido, and they have not expanded as i thought the new owner may have done.

They still offer a van service from PPS to Port Barton, but you don't take their van, you still go by the Deep Moon Resort Van, one trip per day each way.

We had one trip from Port Barton to PPS with Recaro and and it was a great trip, and their van was fairly new, the driver was good, and the seats were like aircraft recliners, and not packed in like sardines.

The advantage of Recaro, and some of the other bigger van operators is their service shedules, they have 1 hourly vans between PPS and El Nido, and at least 5 trips from PPS to Port Barton, and El Nido and Port Barton.

To anyone taking a Van from PPS to El Nido, do not go to the bus terminal at San Jose to find one, that place is now in such a filthy rotten state it is almost impossible to find your way around, even i was shocked at how bad it has become since we last saw it 5 years ago, just try to book one from the airport, or pre-book one before you arrive.

If you don't mind me asking, how is El Nido in this weather? Just got to Puerto Princessa today and am wondering if it is worth it to plan a trip to El Nido considering the rainy weather. Is it worth it?

Hi Glenpinn, I hope you don't mind me asking. How did you book with Recaro? Are they available to book from the airport or can i book in advance? I will be travelling in December and I'm pretty keen to get the transfers sorted so we aren't wasting our time there.

Hi, we booked the Recaro van while we was at Port Barton, we met a guy next to the coast guard office next to the beach, who had a small Recaro booking desk, and he arranged everything, so we didn't have to take the trike to the transit terminal at the back of town to book it.

We booked the 8am trip the day before, but there were still a few seats left on our van after we boarded.

There is 3 main van services operating between Port Barton and PPS, and also to El Nido, one has a trip every hour from 6am till 5pm, the other 2 has about 5 or 6 to each of those destinations per day, so you should not miss out, but i still recommend booking your seats at least the day before you leave, or book your return trip on the same day that you arrive in Port Barton, before you take the trike from the transit terminal into the town proper.

The new transit terminal in Port Barton can get very hectic, and the reps from the van services will be waking around trying to drum up business, just go to one of the ticket desks and check out the available options first, and buy your ticket at their desk..

The trike ride into town is 20 Peso, and takes about 3 minutes.
