How to Prep for the Tour de Cure, Presented by Wheaton Precious Metals

May 24, 2024

Found in General ,   Tour de Cure

tour de cure news

It’s time to start preparing for this year’s Tour de Cure, presented by Wheaton Precious Metals, because before you know it, this incredible event will be here.

You should be extremely proud of yourself — you have signed up to raise critical funds to support cancer care and research in B.C. and you are taking part in B.C.’s largest cycling fundraiser!

Whether you’ve taken part before or this is your first time participating, we’ve put together some tips on how to prep for this year’s ride on August 24 to 25.

Physical Prep: A Healthy Body

It’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and body. By exercising regularly and making healthy food choices not only will it help you better engage in physical activity, it can also reduce your risk of cancer .

In the months leading up to the ride, we suggest training consistently. For ideas on how to get started, see our sample training plan, presented by the Tour de Cure team and Wheaton Precious Metals, below.

tour de cure news

Remember, training plans are not one-size-fits-all, so develop a fitness plan that works best for you. We encourage you to exercise both on and off the bike, to work different muscle groups like your glutes, core and hamstrings, and we also recommend that you gradually ramp up your riding to avoid injury.

If possible, sign up for a training session with other riders, so you can get accustomed to group cycling. There will be meet-up training rides with fellow members of the Tour de Cure community in various locations — sign up today !

On the day of the event, make sure you’re adequately fuel l ed with food. You’ll be burning a lot of energy, so ensure you consume enough carbohydrates and proteins the day before a n d the morning of the event . Be mindful of fibre -rich foods on the day of the ride , as they are harder to digest, and stick with foods you tolerate well. Also, make sure to stay well hydrated !

Mental Prep: A Healthy State of Mind

Proper training, hydration and nutrition also contribute to a healthy state of mind, which is crucial for preparing for a ride as epic as the Tour de Cure.

Other simple ways you can help ease your mind ahead of time include familiarizing yourself with the route beforehand, even if it’s just reviewing the route map online, and getting there early on the day of the event. This prep will keep you from feeling frazzled by the time you start your ride.

Another great way to mentally prepare for the ride is to set attainable goals for yourself and to bring your reason for riding — who are you riding for, or why is fundraising for the BC Cancer Foundation important to you? Keep these reasons at the forefront of your mind, as they’ll help you stay motivated in the time leading up to and during the ride. Also, feel free to bring a printed photo, letter or any keepsake with you on the day of the ride.

And remember, this is a ride, not a race. It is more important to enjoy the ride and stay safe, so do not feel any pressure to descend quickly if this makes you feel uncomfortable.

Technical Prep: Safety and Gear

Your bike should be in good operating shape to ensure everything runs safely and smoothly during the ride. Consider the ABC’s — proper level of Air in tires, Brakes recently serviced, and Chain cleaned and lubed. You don’t want to be cycling, only to realize your bike is not properly working. Plan to have your bike serviced in the weeks leading up to the event by a skilled mechanic.

We understand that things may happen to your bike mid-course, though, so don’t worry, there will be mechanical support at each pit stop and along the courses. They’ll help fix more complicated mechanical problems and will only charge for any parts that may be needed.

You will be sharing the road with other riders and drivers, so ensure you are knowledgeable of the proper hand signals.

What to Pack

For the ride you’ll need a bicycle that’s properly fitted for you and a helmet. C heck the expiry date on your helmet in advance —   the rule of thumb is to replace a helmet that is older than five years —   and helmets should ideally have Mips (multi-directional impact protection system) technology for an extra layer of security against concussions .

While using clipless pedals is recommended for better pedalling efficiency, power and control, many Tour de Cure cyclists finish the ride each year on bikes with regular pedals. So, choose the pedal set-up you are most comfortable with.

You should also bring a water bottle, sunscreen, a tow el an d basic bike gear — including tools and supplies to change a flat tire, a pump and repair kit . Snacks and water will be available at pit stops along the course, but feel free to pack any additional sustenance along with you.

We also encourage everyone to be creative with their outfits or costumes!  And be sure to dress appropriately for the weather; we suggest moisture-wicking fabrics to prevent you from getting too sweaty or cold.

tour de cure news

If you’re participating in the overnight camping experience, we recommend packing clothes, toiletries and towels. There will be showers and toilet facilities on site. Tents will be provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer. You will also need to pack any additional camping equipment or sleeping comforts, like a sleeping bag, sleep mat and pillows.

If you haven’t already signed up for the 2024 Tour de Cure and would like to participate, register now to secure your spot — you don’t want to miss out on this beyond epic event!

If you’ve already registered, a Tour de Cure Ride Guide will be emailed to you with more details closer to the date of the event.

American Diabetes Association's Upstate NY Tour de Cure returns to in-person ride

Bicycle riders compete in the American Diabetes Association Upstate New York Tour de Cure.

For the first time in two years, the American Diabetes Association’s Upstate New York Tour de Cure is being held in-person. The annual fundraising bike ride had shifted to a virtual model during the COVID-19 pandemic. WAMC’s Jim Levulis spoke with Jeff Collins, the ADA’s Upstate New York executive director, about the June ride.

Collins: We're really excited. We are back in person, for the first time in two years with the Tour de Cure. You know, we’ve transitioned and now we're actually bringing together all of our participants across from Upstate New York. So we're really excited that on June 11 in Webster, New York, participants from Buffalo, Albany, everywhere in between, are actually going to be able to get together and ride on tour day.

Levulis: And last year was the first that the four communities of Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany joined together for the Tour de Cure. Now the past two years though, the event has been virtual. How has the merger worked out though so far?

Collins: Yeah, so it's been great. I think, you know, it's a testament to the passion and commitment to our mission, that our participants have stuck with us through two virtual years. And they've started developing new relationships with riders from other cities that they may not have known. You know, we're doing everything that we can to ensure everyone has a great tour experience, and we know that not everyone is able to make it to tour day. So we're working with teams and volunteers in some of our communities to offer a ride, you know, if you can't make it done the thruway that day, you know, your team is going to ride locally or another team is going to ride so everyone is going to be out on the road, wearing their ADA gear, their team gear in support of our mission on tour day.

Levulis: And will there be any components of the virtual events from the past two years that will carry forward this year and beyond?

Collins: Yeah, so I think, you know, something we've learned as an organization is the importance of the virtual aspect and the connectivity. I believe we actually have a participant who is living in Washington, so across the country, and they're going to participate in the tour. They're not sure if they're going to make the trip yet, but if not, they can still ride with us on tour day. So you know, all of our events have a virtual component. And we're still finalizing details on how we're going to integrate that on tour day. But we're definitely going to be sharing everyone's social media posts. So we're encouraging everyone to, even if you're not there with us on tour day to post on social media. But you know, we're one upstate, and our theme for this year is ‘we ride together.’ So whether you're with us in person, or you're in a different part of the state, the country, the world, we're all riding together.

Levulis: And how has interest been so far with the return to the in-person ride?

Collins: It's been great. I think people are just super excited to see one another. We have hosted our kickoff in-person. I think everyone's just so excited to connect again, and be with one another. So we're really excited to see the interest. And looking forward to everyone coming out there.

Levulis: This year's event, this year's ride, the main ride is taking place in Webster as you mentioned.  Will the event, the main ride, move to some of the other participating Upstate cities in coming years?

Collins: So it's something we're definitely open to. At this point, we haven't made any decisions. We wanted to kind of see how first year back in-person was going to go. But, nothing's out of the question. You know, we want to be in the communities that we serve. And you know, we're always trying to figure out the best way to do that.

Levulis: And what's the fundraising goal for this year's Tour de Cure?

Collins: Yeah, so our fundraising goal for this year is $750,000. You know, we're heading back on our road to a million dollars to be in the number one tour in the country again, but we're super excited to see the progress so far. And we feel good about reaching that goal.

Levulis: And finally, if I'm interested in taking part in the 2022 Tour de Cure on June 11 th in Webster, what is the best way to do that?

Collins: So you can go to diabetes.org/upstatetour , and you can register. Like I said, you can participate virtually, or you can come join us in Webster. We are offering opportunities for fundraisers to earn free hotel rooms. Everyone who is coming into town has an opportunity for a discounted hotel room. We've even had some teams and participants offer up their homes to fellow riders. So we're really excited and you can go to diabetes.org/upstatetour to register.

Leitgeb is a Type 2 diabetic and has been riding in the event for the last seven years. He has been in the top 10 fundraisers every year he has ridden. His fundraising goal was $5,500. So far, he’s in the top six for fundraisers, coming in at just short of $6,400 so far.

The Tour de Cure starts Saturday, with race options for adults and kids, with the shortest being 12 miles, and the longest being 100.

CTV will be teaming up with  The Tour de Cure ,  presented by Wheaton Precious Metals!

Team CTV has supported this cause from day one and with your help continues to be a force for good with over $1,750,000 raised by over 260 enthusiastic riders over the last 15 years.

We continue this heartfelt tradition in 2024 as we gear up and ride on August 24th from Cloverdale to Chilliwack and then on the 25th to Hope. We will train hard (in the rain), ride hard (everywhere), do loads of laundry, fix dozens of flats, eat gobs of gel packs, plaster boatloads of band-aids and break all sorts of blisters to get ready for this day. (Sounds fun doesn't it?). Some of us won't even have a bike when we sign up!

No matter what the obstacles are we commit with passion to help and support those near and around us that continue to suffer and be affected by cancer. We do it all together and support each other as a team. In so doing we share lots of laughs, make many friends and shed our fair share of tears. It's an event fueled by passion and a passion fueled by hope ... the hope to END CANCER.

The Tour de Cure benefits the BC Cancer Foundation and is B.C.'s largest cycling fundraiser, featuring an unforgettable two-day, fully-supported cycling experience that provides participants with fundraising tools and guidance, overnight camping and meals, plus mechanical and medical support along the route.

Support Team CTV to help break down cancer or commit to riding 200 km from Aug. 24th and 25th, 2024 and join a community that has raised over $100 million for world-leading research and innovation at BC Cancer.

The Tour de Cure isn’t just about crossing the finish line, it’s an invitation for riders of all backgrounds and skill levels to contribute their strength and individuality to a community that rides as one.

Cycling 200 km is hard, but facing cancer is harder.

Noxopharm reports results from Chroma platform drug development program

tour de cure news

Noxopharm (ASX:NOX) has announced progress on its Chroma technology platform, encouraging early drug leads with anticancer activity for glioblastoma and leukaemia.

The company's Chroma drug development program runs in parallel with its Sofra program.

Noxopharm and the University of South Australia (UniSA) recently received a $100,000 grant from Tour de Cure to conduct preclinical work on two novel first-in-class drugs developed via the Chroma platform.

Noxopharm said the drugs have been tested on an extensive biobank of patient-derived tumour explant organoids (GBOs), a state-of-the-art glioblastoma explant model established by Dr Helen Palethorpe and Professor Guillermo Gomez at the Centre for Cancer Biology, UniSA.

Dr Palethorpe said, “Methods to generate and biobank patient-derived explants are very time consuming, technically demanding and time sensitive. We have established and finessed a highly sophisticated method for generating and biobanking these explants, which is essential to maintain the original tumour composition for preclinical testing of novel compounds developed by the Chroma drug development program.”

The company said the Chroma platform was also used to identify a novel drug targeting a gene mutation found in Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) that arises during current standard-of-care treatment. As a consequence of this mutation, the cancer becomes resistant to standard-of-care drugs.

"Early findings show the novel Chroma drug candidate can overcome this common problem of drug resistance, which can happen any time during or after the treatment," said Noxopharm.

CEO Dr Gisela Mautner said, “We are building momentum in the Chroma platform with these results, broadening it out to target glioblastoma as well as explore blood cancers like leukaemia. We intend to progress this research and work closely with the world-class team at UniSA to generate new data and understand these first-in-class drugs more deeply. This is very worthwhile when there is clearly a great need for new approaches, and having several promising drug candidates in simultaneous development also increases commercial opportunities.”

It looks like The Cure are finally teasing their new album

Robert Smith and co's first album in 16 years could finally be round the corner...

The Cure at the NME Awards 2020

Fans have been speculating that The Cure may be teasing an imminent return to music following the band changing their social media logos and updating their website – as well as revealing posts from band members and their relatives.

  • READ MORE:  On the cover – Robert Smith on 40 years of The Cure

Earlier today (September 9), The Cure took to their official social media pages to swap out their previous profile picture for a new one comprised of a brand new band logo with an all-black background. The sudden change of photo has led fans to believe that Robert Smith and co may be announcing some kind of return – which they hope is the long-awaited ‘Songs Of A Lost World’.

Fans quickly took to the comments section under the band’s Facebook update to share their excitement. “Please let it be finally an announcement of the new album!!,” wrote one user while another shared: “Come on gents, announce the new album! I hope we get it soon along with a new tour!”

Another fan wrote: “Come on, new album. I want to hear the studio version of those new songs you played in Leeds 2022.” They were referencing the likes of ‘A Fragile Thing’ , ‘ Another Happy Birthday ‘ and ‘ I Can Never Say Goodbye ‘ which were three of the new tracks the band debuted while on tour in 2022.

The news comes ahead of the release of the band’s two new songs as live recordings that will be a double A-side for climate charity ‘Earth Percent’ .

Released via  Naked Record Club  – a record label that releases limited edition records on sustainable vinyl – ‘The Cure – Novembre: Live in France 2022’ is a double A-Side 12” Eco-Vinyl single featuring two live tracks that were recorded during the French leg of  the band’s ‘Shows Of A Lost World’ tour .

The first song, ‘And Nothing Is Forever’ was recorded live in Montpellier at the Sud de France Arena on November 8 2022, while ‘I Can Never Say Goodbye’ was recorded live in Toulouse, Zénith, on November 13 2022. These are the first new tracks from The Cure in 16 years.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Cure (@thecure)

Back in 2022, The Cure also performed t wo other new tracks titled ‘Alone’ and ‘Endsong’ while kicking off their world tour . All of the unreleased songs are speculated to be featured on the band’s long-awaited new album, ‘ Songs Of A Lost World ‘, which would mark their first LP in 16 years, following from 2008’s ‘ 4:13 Dream ‘.

In a four-star review of their live performance at London’s OVO Arena Wembley during that year , NME shared how Smith took the time to promise “that the new songs ‘won’t be new for much longer.'”

The review also described the new tracks, sharing: “The ticking clock piano rhythms and rolling bass of ‘A Fragile Thing’ accompany the promise that there’s “nothing you can do to change the end”, while ‘Endsong’ is a stunning, sprawling soundscape to portray Smith utterly lost in a universe where there’s “ Nothing left of all I loved ”. The truly devastating heart of the new material previewed comes with ‘I Can Never Say Goodbye’ – where howling guitars match the singer’s fear of “ shadows growing closer now ” as “something wicked this way comes, to steal away my brother’s life ”. You feel that these songs are for those who mean the world to him.”

Speaking to NME backstage at the  BandLab NME Awards 2022 , Smith took the time to exclusively confirm that The Cure’s next album would be titled ‘Songs Of A Lost World’ , sharing: “It’s got artwork, it’s got a running order, it’s almost done! They’re so slow because of vinyl, but it might come in September. I’d rather it just came out. I can’t stand the anticipation.”

He also revealed more about its sister record and his anticipated solo album. “So I’ve been working on two Cure albums, and one of them is finished,” he added. “Unfortunately, it’s the second one that’s finished. [On the other] I’ve got to do four vocals, and there are 10 songs on each album. We’re mixing next month on April 1, so I’ve got three weeks left.”

Asked about the sound of the upcoming records, Smith revealed: “Well the first Cure album is relentless doom and gloom. It’s the doomiest thing that we’ve ever done. The second one is upbeat, and my [solo] one won’t be out until next year.

“I have to keep revisiting it. It’s a thing I’ve wanted to do for so many years. I realise I’ve only got one shot at doing it, so I’ve now started to add real instruments and acoustic instruments, whereas this time two years ago it was literally just feedback – but I’ve kind of grown a bit disenchanted with it. I’d listened to it like three times and I think it’s rubbish.”

At the 2022 Ivor Novellos’ The Cure spoke to NME and confirmed that the album was  “almost finished”.

“Reeves our guitar player has come over from America for the day just to finish a couple of solos, I’ve got to finish a couple of vocals,” Smith revealed. “Essentially it’s a 12 track album. It’s there, it’s kind of half-mixed and half-finished. It’s a weird thing. It’s kind of evolved over the last two years. It hasn’t always been a good thing to have been left alone with it. You pick at it, like picking at seams, and everything falls apart.

He continued: “It’ll be worth the wait. I think it’s the best thing we’ve done, but then I would say that. I’m not doing an Oasis when I say that, ‘IT’S THE BEST FOOKIN’ ALBUM’. A lot of the songs are difficult to sing, and that’s why it’s taken me a while.”

The frontman has long teased  the band’s long-awaited “merciless” new record , which keyboardist Roger O’Donnell previously described as “the most intense, saddest, most dramatic and most emotional record we’ve ever made, and then we can just walk away from it… Listening to the demos, it is that record. I think everybody will be happy with it.”

He continued: “The problem is, it’s 12 years since the last album so it becomes precious. When you’ve got a back catalogue like The Cure, it’s a lot to live up to. Robert has said, ‘if The Cure say any more, it had better be important and it had better be fucking good’.

“It is, it’s going to be an amazing record. I just suggest a little patience.”

Discussing the themes and character of the long-awaited follow-up to 2008’s ‘ 4:13 Dream ‘, Smith said  that the album “doesn’t have very much light on it” and that it sounds “more like ‘Disintegration’ than ‘Head On The Door’.”

“It’s pretty relentless, which will appeal to the hardcore of our audience, but I don’t think we’ll be getting any Number One singles off it or anything like that!” he told  NME , explaining that it was informed by lockdown. “It’s been quite harrowing, like it has for everyone else.”

He continued: “I’ve been more privileged than most, but lockdown and COVID has affected me in as much as I’ve lost an entire generation of aunts and uncles in under a year. It’s things like that which have informed the way I’ve been with the record.”

tour de cure news

Smith previously opened up about how losing his mother, father and brother has inspired the ‘darkness’ within the forthcoming album , telling The Los Angeles Times: “obviously it had an effect on me. It’s not relentlessly doom and gloom. It has soundscapes on it, like ‘Disintegration’, I suppose. I was trying to create a big palette, a big wash of sound.”

Smith added: “The working title was ‘Live From the Moon’, because I was enthralled by the 50th anniversary of the Apollo landing in the summer. We had a big moon hanging in the studio and lunar-related stuff lying around. I’ve always been a stargazer.”

Speaking to NME about his hopes for the album, Smith said : “Before I used to write about stuff that I thought I understood. Now I know I understand it. The lyrics I’ve been writing for this album, for me personally, are more true. They’re more honest. That’s probably why the album itself is a little bit more doom and gloom. I feel I want to do something that expresses the darker side of what I’ve experienced over the last few years – but in a way that will engage people.”

The frontman added: “Some of the albums like ‘Pornography’ and ‘Disintegration’ are kind of relentless. I levelled ‘Disintegration’ with some songs like ‘Lullaby’ and ‘Lovesong’, but I think this one is more like ‘Pornography’ because it hasn’t got any of those songs that lighten the mood at all.”

More news on the band’s upcoming 14th album is expected to follow in the weeks ahead.

Elsewhere, O’Donnell recently revealed that he was diagnosed with blood cancer last year . The keyboardist shared the news last week (September 1) on the first day of Blood Cancer Awareness Month.

He took to his official X/Twitter account to reveal that he was “diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive form of lymphoma” back in September 2023 and has since since recovered.

Robert Smith of The Cure performing live in 2019

Fans of The Cure have began speculating if their anticipated fourteenth album is on the way, after a flurry of mysterious online activity earlier today.

Devotees of the Crawley goth icons have noticed that the band’s website appears to be entirely wiped, save for a new logo which features a lowercase “the” and “CURE” in capitals, written in a typewriter style font.

The new logo is also the profile picture of the band’s social media channels, while the option for fans to sign up to their mailing list suggests that an announcement could be on the way.

It’s entirely possible that the announcement could be the band’s first album since 2008’s 4:13 Dream . The long-gestating project has been teased by frontman Robert Smith across various interviews in recent years.

Hmm…The Cure just updated their logo. The official site too. https://t.co/DTVqunO39c pic.twitter.com/PDtKgBbi36 — Chain of Flowers (@CraigatCoF) September 9, 2024

Or indeed, albums plural. In 2022, Smith said the group had recorded two albums which were poles apart.

The first, titled Songs of the Lost World , was described by Smith as “upbeat”, while the other was described as “relentless doom and gloom…the doomiest thing we’ve ever done.”

He added of the first record later that year: “It’ll be worth the wait. I think it’s the best thing we’ve done, but then I would say that. I’m not doing an Oasis when I say that, ‘IT’S THE BEST FOOKIN’ ALBUM’. A lot of the songs are difficult to sing, and that’s why it’s taken me a while.”

They’ve also been debuting new songs thought to be from the album in recent years too, notably the emotionally charged ‘A Fragile Thing’ at a show in Italy and a further five tracks including ‘Alone’ and the doom-laden ‘Endsong’ at a Wembley Arena show in December 2022.

It remains to be seen if the announcement is both albums, one, or indeed something entirely unrelated.

In other Cure news, the group’s keyboardist Roger O’Donnell revealed late last month that he has spent the past year fighting “a very rare and aggressive form of lymphoma,” but added he is now doing “fine and the prognosis is amazing.”

O’Donnell — who joined the Cure in 1987, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2019, and performed live on the Cure’s North American tour last year before then-unspecified “health reasons” forced him to miss the band’s Latin American tour in November 2023 — opened up about his own cancer battle in an effort to encourage fans to get tested.

“Cancer CAN be beaten but if you are diagnosed early enough you stand a way better chance, so all I have to say is go GET TESTED, if you have the faintest thought you may have symptoms go and get checked out,” O’ Donnell wrote.

“I’m fine and the prognosis is amazing. The mad axe murderer knocked on the door and we didn’t answer.”
