Many signs in America are simple and mundane, like speed limit signs or stop signs. You might be so accustomed to seeing these signs that you barely glance at them anymore — and you only do when you need the information. But there are a handful of signs that turn heads and draw tourists. Some of the most known signs in the world are located in America, from California to Louisiana. Here are 10 signs in the United States that have become their own landmarks:

As the world’s most traveled road, Route 66 originally spanned almost 2,500 miles across the United States from Illinois to California. The famous road lives on in songs, movies and television shows. Driving along it is a dream of many travelers. The original was constructed in 1962, but only parts of the first Route 66 remain, the rest having been replaced by the Interstate Highway System in 1985.

beverly hills sign

Known as a glamorous city, Beverly Hills bears the signature shield sign that is recognized as a landmark around the world. There are 33 signposts throughout the city, located in popular areas like Moreno Drive, Beverly Gardens, the Beverly Hills Visitor Center and Little Santa Monica Blvd. Many of the signs are their own tourist attraction as well as marking areas tourists would like to explore.

Probably one of the most famous signs on this list, the Hollywood sign is featured in plenty of shows and movies. Located in Los Angeles, a place known for dreams coming true, the sign has graced the Mount Lee summit since it originated in 1923. It overlooks the Hollywood district and is easily visible, even from a distance. The sign is 110 meters long, and each letter is 14 meters tall. This iconic sign is one of the most recognized and most photographed globally.

This neon sign depicts teens dancing on top of a record. The dancers’ legs move back and forth while music bars flash. Designed for Clayton and Russ Solomon, founders of Tower Records, the sign was one of few that was an exception to the Sacramento city ordinance that outlawed animated signs.

The theater sign in Chicago has also appeared in many movies and television shows. It’s 18 meters tall and has remained since the venue was built in 1921. It’s famous for the entertainment it produces.

Coca-Cola is a widely known brand, and its logo is just as easily recognizable. The Coke sign in Baton Rouge originally remained unlit for years, until a restoration was completed. The owner of the building where the sign hung covered it with a tarp for over a year, claiming that the arts council that completed the restoration had no right to do so. After 15 months, the disagreement was resolved. The sign now shines bright, attracting tourists interested in getting a look at a piece of history.

las vegas city entrance sign

Another widely known sign, the Fabulous Las Vegas sign, welcomes visitors to Sin City and has since 1959. It is 7.6 meters tall, located at 5100 Las Vegas Boulevard South. Many tourists see the sign and its flashing lights as a representation of the fun and glamor that comes with Vegas. It was also added to Nevada’s list of registered historic places in 2013.

Also in Nevada, the Reno Arch is a neon sign which features the city’s motto: “The Biggest Little City in the World.” Reno, similar to Las Vegas, is famous for its casinos. This sign also shares the essence of its location. The original arch was built in 1926 and was twice replaced. The current sign was installed in 1987.

Nevada is not only known for its gambling and casinos, but also for the mysterious Area 51. The Extraterrestrial Highway sign fits that theme. Also known as Nevada State Route 375, this road is a place where many people reported alien encounters and UFO sightings, making it a destination for those interested in the otherworldly. Nevada officially named it Extraterrestrial Highway in April of 1996.

Broadway is one of the biggest attractions in New York City and has signs in varying locations. It is one of the most recognized streets around the world, running 33 miles long. Broadway dates back to 1642 and is famous for its shows and theaters.

These 10 iconic signs in America are only the beginning. There are many more well-known and less-known signs that tourists make a point of visiting on their travels or that are admired by those in the local area. You might be more inclined to visit some of the better-known ones, but it’s important to remember that they’re all famous for a reason. That reason sometimes isn’t visible through an image, but rather through the experience of an in-person sighting.

While the U.S. holds plenty of globally known signs, there are many in other countries that are just as recognizable. Some, like the wildlife signs in Australia, are nothing more than mundane for locals. Others, like the Signpost Forest, are not only a tourist attraction but a common visit for locals as well. And a few, like the Skipping Girl, might be more appreciated by locals than visitors. Take a look at these 10 iconic signs:

animal crossing signs

Australia is widely known for its unique, sometimes strange and often large wildlife. The country is covered in animal warning signs not often seen in other locations. From crocodile warnings to kangaroo and koala crossings, they’re a part of everyday road travel for locals, but they capture the attention of visitors.

While this sign is not as picture perfect as the others, it’s iconic for its closeness to the Melbourne Cricket Ground and tennis center, where the country’s biggest sporting events are held. The clock was broken for numerous years and is on concrete grain storage silos — nothing special. It shows the time and temperature and dates back to when the area was an industrial zone. It’s a landmark since it’s remained for so long.

This sign is leftover from a vinegar company and depicts a little girl, dubbed Little Audrey, in neon lights. At night, a jump rope lights up and flashes around her, making her appear to be jumping it. The original girl was removed back in the 1960s, but people erupted in a mass outcry. In response, she was restored and placed in a new location close to the original. This landmark is so well known that there is a Wikipedia page about the Skipping Girl.

This sign is well-known for representing the essence of Montreal’s bilingual history. “Farine” is the French word for flour, while the company’s name is written in English. The sign represents what many call “Franglais,” a combination of the English and French languages.

Along the Alaska Highway in Canada, the Signpost Forest is an actual forest full of street signs and license plates. It originated in 1942 when Private Carl K. Lindley, who was repairing a damaged signpost in the area, decided to add a sign with the distance to his hometown of Danville, Illinois. Soldiers then followed his example and by 2008, the number of signs reached over 65,000. Anywhere from 2,500 to 4,000 signs are estimated to be added to the landmark every year.

Often known for its reference in the Beatles song, the Penny Lane sign is recognized around the world. John Lennon and Paul McCartney would meet to catch the bus into town here. After they released their song, the original sign was stolen and it became a constant target by thieves. Because of this, “Penny Lane” was instead painted on the bricks above where the sign stood. However, Penny Lane now uses street signs, but occasional thefts do still occur.

Located at all entrances to the London Underground, the red and blue station signs have been used since 1908. They’re internationally recognized and can be bought with some of the station names on them from the Transport for London online shop. Locals refer to the transport as “the tube.” It has been in use since the late 1800s.

This sign is the only sign on the list that does not signify an actual location. It is at Kings Cross Station in London and references the fictional platform used in the Harry Potter series by students to get to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Fans visited this sign so often that it had to be moved from the original location on a platform to a brick wall next to a themed gift shop.

Located in Paris, the Moulin Rouge windmill and sign has been up since 1889. The venue is a cabaret, famous for shows inspired by the circus in its early days. The original location, founded by Charles Zidler and Joseph Oller, burned down in 1915. The new location opened shortly after in 1921. It is still a popular attraction for entertainment.

Valdivieso, a wine brand and vineyard, put up this sign between 1954 and 1955. The sign became an official national monument in 2010. Then, in 2017, there was a controversy that arose from a change in the phrasing of the sign which originally read “Y hoy, por qué no?” (And today, why not?) to “Desde Siempre” (Since always).

While the area surrounding a sign can add to the wonder of it, it can be hard to travel globally to visit all of these. Yet, if you can’t see these signs in person, they are noteworthy enough that you should at least look at pictures of each.

As you can see from this list, signs can be much more than a location guide. Signs, when created correctly, can bring together a community, can represent an area and its people or beliefs and can be a travel destination. Sometimes, the right design can turn heads, like with the Skipping Girl. Sometimes, it’s more about history, like the Route 66 signs. Other times, it’s about the sense people get from seeing it, like the Hollywood sign or the Fabulous Las Vegas sign.

Introduction

When driving on the road, it’s crucial to have clear and visible destination signs to guide you to your desired location. These signs provide valuable information such as the name of the place, the distance to it, and the direction you should take. While we often take these signs for granted, they play a vital role in ensuring smooth navigation and preventing confusion or delays for travelers.

In this article, we will explore the various aspects of destination signs, focusing specifically on their color and shape. Understanding the logic behind these choices can give us insight into the design and functionality of these signs.

Destination signs are carefully crafted to be easily recognizable and distinct from other signage on the road. They need to grab the attention of drivers and passengers alike, providing clear information at a glance. By analyzing the colors and shapes used in destination signs, we can gain a deeper understanding of their purpose and significance.

So, let us embark on a journey into the world of destination signs and uncover the secrets behind their color and shape choices. Join us as we explore how these elements contribute to effective wayfinding and ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience.

Purpose of a Destination Sign

The primary purpose of a destination sign is to provide essential information to road users, guiding them to their intended destination. These signs serve as a communication tool between the road authorities and drivers, helping to ensure safe and efficient navigation on the road network.

Destination signs play a crucial role in providing directions and indicating the names of cities, towns, landmarks, and other important points of interest. They help drivers make informed decisions, allowing them to choose the correct routes and exits based on their desired destination.

Moreover, destination signs assist in promoting traffic flow by reducing congestion and preventing unnecessary lane changes. When drivers have clear and visible signage indicating upcoming exits, they can plan their lane changes in advance, resulting in smoother traffic movements and reducing the risk of accidents.

Destination signs also provide valuable information to tourists and visitors to a particular area. These signs may include symbols or icons that represent popular tourist attractions, national parks, historical sites, or recreational facilities. This helps travelers locate and easily access these points of interest, enhancing their overall experience while exploring a new destination.

Another important purpose of destination signs is to aid emergency services. In the event of an accident or emergency, these signs play a crucial role in guiding first responders to the exact location. Clear and well-placed signage allows emergency services to reach their destination quickly and efficiently, potentially saving valuable time and lives.

Overall, the purpose of a destination sign is to provide clear, concise, and easily understandable information to road users. Whether it’s helping drivers find their way, assisting tourists in exploring new places, or aiding emergency services in reaching their destinations, these signs serve as an essential navigational tool that keeps our roads safe and efficient.

Standard Colors of Destination Signs

Destination signs are designed using specific colors to convey important information and ensure their visibility on the road. These standard colors have been carefully chosen to maximize legibility and communicate the intended message effectively.

One of the most commonly used colors for destination signs is green. Green is typically used to indicate directions to cities, towns, or general destinations. It is a recognizable and calming color that stands out against the surrounding environment. Green destination signs often provide information about the names of upcoming towns or major cities along a particular route.

Blue is another color commonly seen on destination signs. Blue is typically used to indicate services and amenities available at an upcoming exit or interchange. These signs may include information about rest areas, gas stations, food options, lodging, or other essential services. Blue destination signs are designed to provide convenience and ensure that drivers have access to necessary facilities during their journey.

Red is often used for warning signs and information related to emergencies. However, on destination signs, red is used sparingly and usually signifies important landmarks or attractions. Red destination signs may indicate popular tourist destinations, historic sites, or specific points of interest along a route. The bold and attention-grabbing nature of red draws the eye, making these signs easily noticeable.

Additionally, black is commonly used for text and symbols on destination signs, providing a high contrast against the background color. White may be used as a secondary color, providing additional contrast and enhancing visibility at night. The combination of black and white creates a clear and easily readable signage system.

It is important to note that while these colors are widely used and standardized, there may be variations in color choices between different regions or countries. Local regulations or preferences may influence the specific color schemes used for destination signs.

By adhering to these standard colors, destination signs can effectively convey important information to drivers, ensuring safe navigation and providing a consistent experience for road users. These colors have been carefully selected based on their visual impact and ability to grab attention amidst the various stimuli that drivers encounter on the road.

Common Shapes of Destination Signs

Destination signs come in various shapes, each chosen for its distinct purpose and visual impact. The shape of a destination sign not only contributes to its overall aesthetic appeal but also provides important cues to drivers on the road.

One of the most commonly used shapes for destination signs is the rectangular shape. Rectangular signs are easy to read and can display significant amounts of information, such as the names of cities, towns, or landmarks. These signs are often placed at highway exits or interchanges, providing drivers with clear navigation guidance.

Another common shape is the pentagon. Pentagon-shaped signs are typically used to indicate U.S. routes or highways. These signs provide information on major roads and routes, helping drivers identify the appropriate highways to follow when traveling long distances.

Circular signs are also frequently seen on the road, especially for route markers. Circular destination signs typically display numbers or symbols that indicate specific routes or directions. These signs are easily recognizable and help drivers navigate through complex road networks.

Furthermore, square-shaped signs are often used for regulatory or informational purposes. However, square destination signs may also be seen in certain situations, particularly in urban areas or at specific junctions where additional information needs to be conveyed to drivers.

It’s worth mentioning that the shapes of destination signs are standardized to ensure consistency and clarity. When drivers are familiar with the typical shapes associated with certain types of information, it becomes easier for them to quickly identify and comprehend the messages conveyed by the signs.

The use of standardized shapes also helps road authorities and designers in creating a cohesive signage system that is easily understood by drivers from different regions or countries. By following these recognized shapes, destination signs can effectively communicate information to drivers and enhance overall road safety and navigation.

Factors Affecting Color and Shape Choices

The selection of colors and shapes for destination signs is influenced by several factors, all aimed at maximizing visibility and conveying information effectively to drivers. Here are some key factors that play a role in determining these choices:

1. Contrast and Legibility: The color and shape of destination signs should provide a high level of contrast against the surrounding environment, making them easily visible to drivers. The colors and shapes chosen should ensure that the information displayed on the sign can be read and interpreted quickly and accurately, even from a distance.

2. Cultural and Regional Considerations: Destination signs can vary in color and shape based on cultural and regional preferences. Local regulations, traditions, or specific mandates may influence the choice of colors and shapes used in different areas. Adhering to these cultural and regional considerations helps create a sense of familiarity and ensures that the signage system aligns with the expectations of the drivers in that particular location.

3. International Standards: While there may be variations in color and shape choices between countries and regions, certain international standards have been established to promote consistency and enhance road safety for international travelers. These standards ensure that drivers can easily understand and interpret destination signs regardless of their location.

4. Visibility and Recognition: The colors and shapes of destination signs must be recognizable and distinguishable from other road signs to avoid confusion. By using distinct colors and shapes, drivers can quickly identify a destination sign and understand its purpose, even when traveling at high speeds or in challenging weather conditions.

5. Harmonization with Surroundings: Destination signs should blend harmoniously with the overall visual landscape of the road network while still standing out to attract attention. The colors and shapes chosen should complement the surrounding environment without compromising on visibility and legibility.

6. Accessibility for Color-Blind Individuals: Consideration should be given to individuals who are color-blind. Selecting colors with sufficient contrast and incorporating different shapes can aid in conveying information to all road users, regardless of their color vision limitations.

7. Branding and Identity: In some cases, destination signs may incorporate branding elements or regional identities to showcase the unique characteristics of the area. This can include local symbols, logos, or regional artwork, reflecting the culture and heritage of the region while still fulfilling the primary purpose of providing crucial information to drivers.

By considering these factors, road authorities and designers can strategically select colors and shapes for destination signs that effectively communicate information, improve road safety, and enhance the overall travel experience for drivers.

Importance of Clear and Visible Destination Signs

Clear and visible destination signs play a critical role in ensuring safe and efficient navigation on the road. Here are some key reasons why these signs are of utmost importance:

1. Wayfinding and Direction: Destination signs guide drivers in finding their way to their intended destination. By providing clear and concise information about upcoming exits, cities, towns, and landmarks, these signs help drivers make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary detours or confusion. They ensure a smooth and seamless journey by minimizing the chances of getting lost or taking wrong turns.

2. Safety and Accident Prevention: Well-placed and visible destination signs contribute to road safety by reducing the risk of accidents. When drivers can easily identify and understand upcoming exits and routes, they can prepare for lane changes and navigational maneuvers in advance. This prevents sudden or last-minute lane changes, reducing the likelihood of collisions or abrupt braking maneuvers. Clear destination signs enable drivers to maintain a safe and consistent flow of traffic, promoting overall road safety.

3. Efficient Traffic Flow: By providing clear information about upcoming exits and key destinations, destination signs help distribute traffic evenly on the road network. Drivers can plan their routes and choose the most appropriate lanes without causing unnecessary congestion or delays. When drivers are aware of upcoming exits and have ample time to change lanes, traffic flows more smoothly, dispersing evenly across multiple lanes and preventing bottlenecks.

4. Time and Fuel Efficiency: Clear and visible destination signs save drivers time and fuel by ensuring efficient navigation. When drivers can quickly identify the correct exits or routes, they can reach their destinations more directly, eliminating unnecessary detours. This reduces travel time and saves fuel, contributing to both cost savings and environmental sustainability.

5. Tourist and Visitor Experience: Destination signs are essential for tourists and visitors exploring new areas. These signs provide them with valuable information about popular tourist attractions, landmarks, and facilities. Clear signage enables tourists to navigate unfamiliar roads with ease, ensuring a positive travel experience and enabling them to make the most of their visit.

6. Emergency Services and Responders: In the event of an accident or emergency, clear and visible destination signs are crucial for first responders to locate the scene quickly. These signs provide vital information about the nearest exits and landmarks, enabling emergency services to reach the destination promptly and provide necessary assistance. This can potentially save lives and minimize the impact of emergencies.

Overall, clear and visible destination signs are integral to safe, efficient, and stress-free travel. They facilitate wayfinding, promote road safety, and contribute to smoother traffic flow. Whether for everyday commuters, tourists, or emergency responders, these signs ensure that road users can navigate the road network with ease, reaching their destinations with confidence and minimal disruptions.

Destination signs, with their carefully selected colors and shapes, play a crucial role in guiding drivers to their intended destinations. The use of standard colors such as green, blue, and red, along with recognizable shapes like rectangles, pentagons, circles, and squares, ensures that these signs are easily identifiable and comprehensible to road users.

The importance of clear and visible destination signs cannot be overstated. They provide essential information, aid in efficient wayfinding, enhance road safety, and contribute to a positive travel experience. By guiding drivers with accurate directions, these signs reduce the likelihood of accidents, minimize congestion, and promote the smooth flow of traffic.

Factors such as contrast, regional considerations, international standards, and accessibility for color-blind individuals all influence the choices made in relation to colors and shapes. By prioritizing legibility, visibility, and harmony with the surrounding environment, road authorities and designers create a cohesive signage system that effectively communicates information to drivers.

In conclusion, destination signs are not just mere road markers; they are indispensable tools that help drivers navigate unfamiliar roads, find essential services, and reach their destinations efficiently. By carefully selecting colors and shapes that prioritize clarity and visibility, destination signs contribute to a safer, more convenient, and enjoyable travel experience for all road users.

How Signage and Wayfinding Influences Traveling

One of the first things a person should do in unfamiliar territory is to look around for a sign to help orient themselves. Many cities use a type of signage called “wayfinding” to help people — specifically travelers and tourists — familiarize themselves and navigate through foreign areas.

When it comes to practical solutions for wayfinding, there are a variety of durable signs using metal letters across many cities, as well as markers for schools, subdivisions, and offices. Aside from bringing in foot traffic, places such as offices need signage ; different businesses may even need to deploy lobby signs to let visitors know if they are in the correct unit. Each of these applications is an example of wayfinding.

Wayfinding can help visitors find their way to the historical landmarks, attractions, city centers, and more — easing travel anxiety and helping them feel more comfortable in navigating a foreign location.

What Is Wayfinding?

Wayfinding refers to information systems that guide people through a physical environment and enhance their understanding and experience of the space. Using strategically placed directional, identification, and warning signs, travelers can find vital navigational details. Travelers can find their way to landmarks and attractions, but also essential buildings such as hospitals, hotels, and public transit hubs.

Once in these buildings, more strategic wayfinding signage will help direct you to primary locations such as the ER of a hospital, the concierge at a hotel, or to find your gate for a flight. Virtually everyone has experienced the guidance of wayfinding signage, but may not have noticed the strategy behind the scenes of a city’s environmental design.

Essential Wayfinding Features

To be effective, wayfinding signage needs to be concise, clear, and coherent:

  • Concise : signage should provide just enough information to be helpful, without becoming overwhelming or complex.
  • Clear : signage should use images, graphics, or text strategically to communicate as effectively as possible. Ideally, it will communicate simple messages (announcing the name of a location, the path to a destination, “you are here,” a warning or a rule) allowing for a simple design.
  • Coherent : to be useful, wayfinding signage must be appropriately sized, lit, and accessible. If it is placed too high, low, or out of the way, its effectiveness may be diminished.

Wayfinding’s Role in Environmental Design

Environmental design seeks to create spaces that will enhance the natural, social, cultural, and physical environment of particular areas. Through architecture, ecology, psychology, sociology, and urban planning, strategists can express the identity of a city. This effort includes analyzing how the citizens within the city interact with its environment and continually striving to improve processes.

Wayfinding plays a large role in helping a city’s inhabitants not only navigate and find information about the buildings and POI in a city, but also navigate the city’s entire environment as well. This includes finding routes to destinations, tracking their location when en route, and identifying when they’ve reached their location. This navigation can all be done with the calculated placement of signage that marks important places within the city. Not only is this helpful for citizens, but it is extremely beneficial for tourists as well.

Wayfinding Applications for Travel

Signage is foundational for anyone hoping to become familiar with their surroundings. Knowing tourists are at a disadvantage in foreign cities, environmental designers and urban planners understand the value of wayfinding in helping travelers get to where they want to go. If a city wants to be considered a thriving tourist destination, strategic wayfinding signage is essential for the safety, peace, and confidence of navigation for their visitors.

Imagine being dropped into a foreign airport with no gate signs, arrival/departure screens, or arrows pointing to baggage claims — and you only had 40 minutes to get to your plane. It may make you anxious to even think about it. Aside from signage to find routes around a city, wayfinding plays a large part in cutting through the confusion of otherwise complicated operations.

Public Transit

Busses, trains, and subways can be difficult to navigate in your city of residence. For travelers, this difficulty can be magnified tenfold without wayfinding. Maps with highlighted routes, arrows pointing to specific vehicles, and screens telling you when your train is going to take off are instrumental in helping travelers reach their destinations.

Large airports can be heavily populated and have several processes involved — security screening, baggage check, and boarding. To make things go more smoothly, ample amounts of wayfinding signage are used to help direct everything. Digital signage can show flight schedules, updates, and cancellations. Additional signage shows security restrictions and processes. Some signs point you to your gate, terminals, restaurants, and even service dog relief areas.

Hostels, hotels, and resorts can be much easier to find with wayfinding signage. Once there, you can find the check-in station, view offers and events, services, maps, and videos of the estate. Without wayfinding resources, this may be next to impossible — especially if you don’t speak the native language of the place you are visiting.

Navigation Around a Foreign City

As a tourist, it could be difficult to find the Colosseum from your hotel if Rome didn’t have any signs pointing you to the ancient amphitheater, memorial plaques , various “you are here” maps, and clearly marked pedestrian/vehicle routes to get there. This goes for finding almost anything in a foreign city — hospitals, markets, government buildings, fuel stations, and much more.

Wayfinding is unassumingly essential for both cities and travelers. Without this signage, tourists may be subjected to crime, inadequate medical care, and be unaware of access to provisions and lodging — and may choose to leave the city. Cities that strive to provide tactical wayfinding signage can reap the benefits of a thriving tourist industry and the knowledge that its best assets are proudly on display.

Ans: Destination signs can be found on highways, roads, airports, train stations, bus terminals, and other transportation hubs. They are typically placed at strategic points along these routes and facilities to guide travelers.

Q.4 How do destination signs enhance road safety?

Ans: Destination signs enhance road safety by providing clear and concise directions, enabling drivers to anticipate upcoming turns, junctions, or exits in advance. This reduces the likelihood of sudden lane changes or last-minute maneuvers, minimizing the risk of accidents. Destination signs also help drivers stay on the correct route, preventing them from getting lost or making dangerous maneuvers.

Q.5 Do destination signs only help drivers?

Ans: No, destination signs benefit all travelers, including drivers, public transportation commuters, and pedestrians. They guide drivers and commuters to their desired destinations, help pedestrians navigate transportation hubs, and provide valuable information about local attractions and points of interest.

Tourist attraction and drive signs

Tourist signs are brown with a white design that can include route numbers and names or symbols. These signs show that:

  • there is a scenic tourist drive
  • a tourist attraction is coming up on or near the road you are on.

Tourist drive signs

A tourist drive is a scenic drive or route that connects a number of tourist features or natural attractions. The drive can include access to tourist facilities or features, or views of natural attractions, such as mountain peaks, waterfalls or named rock formations.

There are many scenic tourist drives in Queensland. They're marked by tourist drive signs:

  • when approaching the tourist drive
  • when the tourist drive starts
  • along the tourist drive
  • when the tourist drive ends.

Tourist attraction signs

Tourist attraction signs show that tourist features or natural attractions are ahead and how to find them. Attractions that might be marked by a tourist attraction sign are:

  • scenic lookouts
  • walking tracks and viewing platforms
  • historical towns, sites, buildings and monuments
  • waterfalls, rock formations, caves, rivers, dams, lakes, mountains or beaches
  • museums, galleries and art and craft outlets
  • wineries and wine regions

The Destination You Should Visit in 2022, Based on Your Zodiac Sign

By Ashlea Halpern

Lavender fields on the Plateau de Valensole Provence.

Astrocartography is a branch of astrology that shows the exact positioning of the planets at the moment you were born. The premise is that the earth holds a resonant memory of this celestial alignment; knowing your map can help you understand why you feel happier in some places than others. Anyone can produce a free astrocartography map online, but you’ll need a professional like astrocartographer Maya White to actually decode it.

“I first got into astrocartography because I needed help understanding my own life,” says White, who purchased her first astro map in 1976 after spotting an ad in a horoscope magazine. She became a certified practitioner in the late ’80s; now she offers private readings, online learning programs, and astrology retreats.

“If you have an accurate time and place of birth, it’s just amazing what information comes out,” she says, noting that it helped her understand where she should live (currently Florida) and also where to travel (she went to India, for example, because her Sun and Uranus lines crossed there).

Climate preferences, work, social environment, and family always factor into her readings. “There is no value in me telling somebody to move to South Dakota if there’s no way they’d do that,” she says. She also pinpoints so-called “trainwreck zones,” areas of the world where certain planetary lines might make for a less-than-stellar experience. Though nothing beats a personalized reading, your star sign alone can offer insight into the types of trips you enjoy most. We asked White to share destination suggestions for where to go next based on the 12 zodiac signs—because it’s never too soon to start planning.

This gallery has been updated since its original publish date.

Amanpuri Thailand

“Aries is an electric personality that bursts onto the scene with a lot of energy,” says White. “But they crave a variety of things to do because they are easily bored.” Fortunately, there are scores of diversions to keep Aries travelers entertained in Thailand. After knocking out some of Bangkok ’s greatest hits ( Wat Pho , The Grand Palace ), the ram can charge over to Ari , a fashionably hip neighborhood with cafés, boutiques, and galleries galore. This is a sign that appreciates the finer things in life, says White, so splurge on a room at Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River , a 2021 Readers’ Choice winner with a swanky vermouth cocktail bar and dreamy riverside pool. White also suggests flying north to Chiang Mai to shop for artisan crafts or head south to the Thai Islands , where a plethora of indulgent luxury resorts await. “While Aries will get lit up by a frenetic city like Bangkok, they also need to retreat and renew,” she says.

Best Places to Live Vancouver Canada

“Bulls are rigid and don’t like to be inconvenienced,” says White. “It takes a lot of energy to make them break their routine and actually go on vacation.” But like a freight train, once this earth sign gets moving, it’s unstoppable. That’s why White suggests an outdoorsy (but not too wild) destination like Vancouver . It’s easily accessible and Taurus can hunker down in a five-star hotel while still taking advantage of everything the ultra-green metropolis has to offer. That means kayaking at Jericho Beach , ziplining over the treetops at Grouse Mountain , strolling the dizzyingly high Capilano Suspension Bridge , pointing out orcas and humpbacks on a whale-watching tour , or taking an enlightening Talking Trees Tour of Stanley Park, led by a local Coast Salish guide. “Taurus is nurtured and sustained by nature,” explains White. “These activities would be exhilarating because they would pop them out of their comfort zone—but not too much.”

Edinburgh Castle illuminated by summer evening sunshine and framed by the partial silhouettes of surrounding trees

“This mutable air sign is always thinking, thinking, thinking,” says White. That’s why Edinburgh —with its “remarkable cultural depth”—is the perfect match for this intellectually curious sign. The twins tend to prioritize experiences over material things, so a thoughtfully designed, centrally located, and budget-conscious Airbnb would suit them just fine. To keep the gears turning, they can tour the caged graves at Greyfriars Kirkyard and underground tenement buildings of Mary King’s Close , ogle the Crown Jewels at Edinburgh Castle , get lost in the artifacts at the National Museum of Scotland , or climb Arthur’s Seat for spectacular views of the city. “Geminis can be real history buffs,” says White. “And Scotland is bound up in rich European history.”

overhead view of food on black table.

“Cancer needs a great hotel, but good food is equally important,” says White. That’s why she’s drawn to an epicurean getaway like Blackberry Mountain in Walland, Tennessee, the sister spin-off of the acclaimed Blackberry Farm . Nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, the inn draws well-heeled travelers who prize warm hospitality and extraordinary food and drink. After a busy day of hiking, fly fishing, or testing their balance during a paddleboard yoga session, Cancer can tuck into a seasonally inspired Southern meal at the property’s elegant Three Sisters or Firetower restaurants. (The latter boasts 360-degree mountain views, thanks to its perch in a restored forest lookout tower.) With a full belly, they may then “retreat to their protective shell”—which, in Blackberry’s case, looks like a chic cottage with a flagstone terrace, outdoor fireplace, and fine Egyptian linens. That patient Cancer may need to book their visit months in advance only adds to its appeal. “Cancer loves doing something exclusive,” says White. “It’s a way to showcase their personality, taste, and determination.”

The Johri

“Leo is quite prideful when it comes to love and beauty,” says White. “To see the Taj Mahal—built as a monument to love by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal—feeds the lion’s ego.” (There isn’t a Leo alive who wouldn’t secretly wish for the same thing.) After a pampering stay at the Moorish-Mogul Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra, White wants Leos to head east to the glittering jewel of Jaipur and check into The Johri , a new boutique property tucked inside one of the city’s oldest bazaars. Co-founded by Siddharth Kasliwal , ninth-generation owner of The Gem Palace, the inn blends sumptuous Rajasthani furnishings with quirky Wes Anderson-esque twists. Because Leos appreciate over-the-top experiences, she recommends ending the trip with a stay at the Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur, a royal palace plunked in the middle of picturesque Lake Pichola, or joining a safari at Ranthambore National Park to see other big cats—specifically wild tigers —in their natural habitat.

A Classic New England Lighthouse The Bass Harbor Head Light In The First Light Of Dawn Acadia National Park Maine USA

“Virgos like things neat and clean,” says White. “They crave structure and are uncomfortable in messy situations. But they’re also a mutable earth sign, which means they go with the flow.” Acadia National Park in Maine offers the best of all worlds: a beautiful “semi-tamed wilderness” with “well-constructed carriage paths” for easier hiking and biking. Virgo will be smitten by the stellar sunrises, says White, and will love exploring the port towns dotting the coastline—combing for colorful polished rocks at Jasper Beach in Machiasport and shopping for artisan-made furniture and handwoven textiles in Camden and Rockland. (“Virgo really values quality,” she notes.) Come nightfall, a safari-inspired glamping experience like the one offered by Under Canvas Acadia in Surry will help Virgo relax and unwind.

Lavender fields on the Plateau de Valensole Provence.

Libra is a cardinal air sign, ruled by Venus and drawn to all things beauty and art. Enter Provence , with its breathtaking fields of lavender, Impressionistic hilltop villages, and glasses brimming with the finest róse. “This is a very Libran-type society,” says White. “They appreciate good food and gracious service, revel in cultural pleasures, and see life as a canvas waiting to be painted.” (It’s no wonder so many famous artists—Cézanne, Picasso, Van Gogh—found inspiration here.) With their exacting standards, Libras lean into the finest accommodations: Hôtel Crillon le Brave in the foothills of Mont Ventoux trades in old-world charm, decorating its suites with still-lifes by renowned local artist Julian Merrow-Smith (with bowls of fresh fruit to match). Whether they’re shopping for sunflowers at the market in Aix-en-Provence, touring the Roman aqueduct bridge near Nîmes, or popping into a charming boulangerie in the narrow backstreets of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, there’s always something enchanting for Libra to behold.

overlooking the Grand Canyon at sunset

“It’s been a difficult couple of years for everyone,” says White. “But Scorpio, perhaps more than other signs, needs a renewal. They’re constantly listening to everyone else’s problems and took on more than their usual share during the pandemic.” That’s why she’s sending the mercurial scorpion to a place beyond compare: the Grand Canyon . “Scorpios get inspired by being in the presence of something greater than themselves,” she explains. “A natural wonder like the Grand Canyon humbles them and helps them recalibrate.” This is particularly true when they veer off the beaten path. Instead of joining the tourist fray at the South Rim, head to the canyon’s lesser-trafficked North Rim or sign up for an intense multi-day rafting trip on the Colorado River. Post-pandemic, hiking to stunning Havasu falls in the Havasupai Indian Reservation would be a dream come true. (For now, the grounds remain closed to tourism to protect its tribal habitants.)

Herd of elephants in the african savannah

Sagittarius

“Sagittarius loves to travel,” says White of the intrepid archer, a mutable fire sign that’s always on the hunt for its next adventure. After two years of pandemic-related lockdowns, White sees something epic in Sag’s future: a safari to Kruger National Park in South Africa and/or an ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania . “The archer has a wild streak and feels rejuvenated in the presence of animals and birds.” Tackling something physically immersive like a walking safari or climbing expedition would feel especially kinesthetic. “Sagittarius needs a wilderness experience to heal their spirit and deepen their connection with self,” says White. There’s just one caveat: While Sags aren’t terribly uppity about accommodations, they do require decent Wi-Fi. (To hang out with giraffes is amazing and all—but even more satisfying if they can share it on Instagram.)

boats on water

The sea goat is ruled by Saturn, the taskmaster of all planets—so naturally, this serious earth sign wants to feel like the master of their own destiny. “Capricorns also appreciate status,” says White. “They’re not as flashy as Leo, but they’re still climbers—socially and financially.” That’s why White recommends chartering a yacht in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, or other beachy idyll. The Moorings , in particular, catches her eye because the long-running outfitter books crewed yachts with a professional captain and first mate as well as more D.I.Y. adventures where a licensed guest can steer their own ship. In the British Virgin Islands, this means Cap designs their own itinerary, penciling in grotto wading at The Baths National Park in Virgin Gorda or snorkeling with blue-striped grunt at Monkey Point off Guana Island. Captaining one’s own ship is the more affordable option too, which appeals to Cap’s need to control the purse strings.

waterfall to the left of a suspension bridge in Ecuador.

This fixed air sign is ruled by Uranus, the planet of questioning and innovation. “They need to be mentally stimulated,” says White. “They’re deep and eclectic thinkers who prize inventiveness and want to understand the forces that drive creation.” Aquarians also tend to be humanitarian, keen to change the world for the better. White believes a journey to the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon would be eye opening for the inquisitive water bearer. ( Papangu Tours , an Indigenous tour operator, can make the arrangements.) They’re intrigued by other people’s lives and spirituality and would want to educate themselves about the oil, mining, and logging industries threatening sacred jungle land and communities. Aquarius might also like to experience a healing session with an Indigenous shaman. (Experimenting with ayahuasca is optional, as many Aquarians are happy to live vicariously through the transcendental experiences of others.) “This adventure is a total wild card, but one Aquarius would absolutely embrace,” says White. “It’s also a bit of a bragging point. Aquarius likes being different, tackling something others may perceive as strange or crazy.”

North Island a Luxury Collection Resort Seychelles

White calls this mutable sign “the environmentalist of the Zodiac” because they care deeply about the earth and their role in it. Symbolized by two fish swimming in opposite directions, Pisces is naturally drawn to watery destinations—the farther flung, the better. The Seychelles , a small island nation about 1,000 miles off the coast of East Africa, checks all the right boxes: A remote ecological paradise with a host of wildlife and non-motorized water sports to experience. Lock in one of 11 sustainably built, thatched-roof villas at Gold List 2020 winner North Island , sandwiched between a forest of tacamahac trees and a pristine coralline beach, and then go exploring. Pisces, which White calls a “deeply compassionate sign,” would enjoy partaking in a marine conservation program (dugongs and giant tortoises are both protected here) or other voluntourism effort. “They really do care, and want to feel like they’ve contributed,” says White.

Where applicable,  you may asked to liaise with Transport Scotland or one of its operating companies. This is the case for signage requests on trunk roads or motorways.

Further advice and guidance on tourist signs

The purpose of tourist signs is to provide clear directions to enable visitors to reach quality tourist destinations safely by vehicle. Example of tourist destinations include:

Establishments primarily acting as retail outlets (including retail parks, shopping centres and garden centres) are only eligible for tourist signs if recognised by us as a "tourist shop" through our visitor attraction Quality Assurance Scheme in addition to meeting all the other relevant criteria.

Tourist destinations not eligible for tourist signposting:

  • exclusive use venues
  • group accommodation providers
  • where multiple units have a manned reception area and have on-spec accommodation available on a nightly basis
  • where the accommodation is eligible for traffic management or road safety issues in certain circumstances
  • worshiping churches

Frequently asked questions

The information shown on a tourist sign must conform to the designs prescribed in the  Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD) . Effective signs provide clear information allowing visitors to reach a destination safely. A tourist sign will show the name of the business, distance to the business (where appropriate) and the VisitScotland thistle logo. Further information on this can be obtained from your local authority.

If eligible, for existing Quality Assurance members we can issue the accreditation letter within five working days.

We cannot issue a letter of accreditation in advance of a Quality Assurance award being conferred.

If you take over a business that has a tourist sign then you need to meet the criteria to be eligible. This includes continued participation in the relevant Quality Assurance Scheme.

If you sell your business and have a tourist sign, remember to pass the details to the new owner. It will become their responsibility, and they will need to be Quality Assured to retain the sign(s).

To retain eligibility for tourist signposting you must meet the Quality Assurance criteria on an annual basis.

You will be liable to have your sign removed at your cost if:

  • you withdraw from a Quality Assurance Scheme
  • you fail to achieve an award
  • you no longer meet the eligibility criteria

It is advisable to have a realistic understanding of the likely costs.

Costs are influenced by the type of road as well as the distance to the destination.

Prices can start from several hundred pounds for signs on local roads. Prices can escalate to many thousands of pounds for motorway or trunk road signing.

You should have appropriate funding identified before proceeding with an application.

Tourist signs take time to be installed. The process includes approval, agreement on location and number of signs, manufacture of the signs and setting them up. The majority of applications are usually concluded within six months. Occasionally the process can take significantly longer depending on the complexity involved.

To be eligible for signs on the motorway network your establishment should be Quality Assured. It should also receive at least 50,000 visitors each year, or more than 10,000 visitors in the peak month. In either case, these thresholds should have been met in each of the previous three years.

Please note that these visitor number thresholds apply only to motorways. There is no visitor number requirement for non-motorway trunk roads (A class roads).

Adequate car parking to accommodate the volume of vehicles expected to visit is also taken into consideration.

For further information, please  read Transport Scotland's trunk road and motorway tourist signposting guidance .

Moscow metro to be more tourist-friendly

A new floor sign system at the Moscow metro's Pushkinskaya station. Source: Vladimir Pesnya / RIA Novosti

For many years now, Moscow has lagged behind St. Petersburg when it comes to making life easy for tourists, especially where getting around the city is concerned. Whereas the northern capital installed English-language maps, signs and information points throughout its subway system in the late 2000s, the Russian capital’s metro remained a serious challenge for foreign visitors to navigate.

Recent visitors to Moscow may have noticed some signs that change is afoot, however. In many stations of the Moscow subway, signs have appeared on the floor – with large lettering in Russian and English – indicating the direction to follow in order to change lines. Previously, foreign visitors using the Moscow metro had to rely solely upon deciphering the Russian-language signs hanging from the ceilings.

Student volunteers help tourists find their way in Moscow

However, this new solution has a significant drawback. “The floor navigation is visible only to a small stream of people – fewer than three people per meter. During peak hours, this navigation will simply not be noticed,” said Konstantin Trofimenko, Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Studies.

One of the biggest problems for tourists in the Russian capital remains the absence of English translations of the names of subway stations in the station vestibules and on platforms. The Department of Transportation in Moscow has not commented yet as to when this problem will be solved. However, Latin transliterations of station names can already be found in the subway cars themselves.

Finding the right exit

At four of the central stations – Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, Lubyanka and Kuznetsky Most – the city authorities have now installed colorful stands at the exits with schematic diagrams of the station’s concourse and surrounding area, which provide information about the main attractions and infrastructural facilities.

The schematic diagrams are the work of British specialists from the City ID and Billings Jackson Design firms, who have already implemented successful projects in New York and London.

According to Alexei Novichkov, expert at the Design Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics, the design of these information booths raises no objections: The color solutions, font, layout and icons are consistent with international standards.

Kudankulam

However, the stands do have some shortcomings. “Many questions are raised about the fact that the developers of these maps did not apply orientation to the north, and have provided layouts of the surrounding areas with respect to the exits,” says Novichkov. “A system like that is used for road navigators, but most of the ‘paper’ guides and maps are oriented strictly to north. The subway map is also oriented to north, so people may become confused.”

Muscovites and foreign visitors are generally positive about these navigation elements, with most of them citing the numbered exits from the subway as the most useful feature.

The fact is that many Moscow subway stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations of the Moscow subway in particular, Kitay-Gorod, has more than a dozen exits. Previously, these exits were differentiated from each other only with signs in Russian referring to the names of streets and places of interest to which they led – making it easy for tourists and those with poor navigation skills to get confused.

Now, when making an appointment to meet a friend, instead of struggling to find the right spot when they tell you: “I'll meet you at the exit to Solyanka Street,” you can just propose to meet under a specific exit number.

“I’ve lived in Moscow for seven years,” says Angelika, a designer from Voronezh, “but I still don’t always know where to go to find the place I need, so the new schematic diagrams will be very useful. Previously, some subway stations had maps, but not with so much detail.”

Teething problems

Foreigners, meanwhile, focus their attention on other elements. “It is good that the new information boards have QR-codes, which can be ‘read’ by smartphones,” says Florentina, a writer from Vienna. But there are also shortcomings. “The English font of the information on posters and in the captions to theaters and museums is too small – you have to come very close to see it well,” she says.

Pleasant encounters on the streets of Moscow

Florentina was also dissatisfied with the fact that such posters are not provided at all subway stations: “When I was trying to find Tsaritsyno Park (a museum and reserve in the south of Moscow) at a subway station with the same name, it turned out to be quite difficult,” she says.

“There are no maps with landmarks for other areas, such as those already in the city center. There were no clear pointers in the English language, and the passers-by I met did not speak in English, so they could not help me,” she adds.

Officials say that the navigation system is gradually being redeveloped and improved. According to Darya Chuvasheva, a press representative for the Department of Transport of Moscow, the introduction of a unified navigation system will take place in stages.

“By the end of 2014, the system will first appear on the first subway stations on the Circle Line. By the end of 2015, we plan to install the system at all major stopping points, subway stations and transport interchange hubs,” says Chuvasheva.

Un tourism | bringing the world closer.

Unwto 2021: a year in review, 2021: tourism united, resilient and determined.

2021 has been a year of learning and adapting for tourism. It has proven that only by working together can the sector overcome challenges and embrace opportunities.

Gathering the global tourism community and developing concrete actions, UNWTO has led tourism’s response with the vision of not only restarting, but doing so in a more inclusive, innovative and sustainable way.

Jan

January - March

As global tourism faced up to a second year of unprecedented crisis , UNWTO began 2021 by counting the cost so far . At the same time, however, the emergence of vaccines brought hope . The Global Tourism Crisis Committee met to explore what this meant for safe travel and the restart of tourism, while the announcement of the winners of the UNWTO Global Start-up Competition recognized the role culture and creativity will play in tourism’s restart and recovery .

Feb

April - June

Collaboration and innovation were the focusat the start of the second quarter. UNWTO partnered with IATA on a new Destination Tracker to give both tourists and destinations clear, impartial and trusted advice. And a new Start-up Competition was launched to find the best ideas for accelerating rural development through tourism. In May, the launch of the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO generated significant interest from Members in every global region.

Mar 2021

July - September

As destinations in Europe welcomed tourists back for the peak summer season, UNWTO highlighted the role of  digital solutions for the safe restart of the sector. But UNWTO also looked ahead, to a more sustainable future , working with key partners to  reduce plastic waste and consumption across every part of the sector. Together, we celebrated World Tourism Day around the theme of Tourism for Inclusive Growth, a message of solidarity and determination that was echoed on a global scale.

April 2021

October - December

The final quarter of 2021 began with cautious optimism as UNWTO’s Barometer showed signs of improvement in tourist arrival numbers during the summer season in the northern hemisphere. A new partnership with Netflix will bring the message of tourism as a driver of opportunity to a massive global audience, while in November, UNWTO was tourism’s voice at COP26 and signatories to the landmark Glasgow Declaration keep growing. Finally, against the backdrop of the UNWTO General Assembly , the programme of work for the coming biennium was approved and 77% of Members voted to secure a second mandate for the Secretary-General from 2022-2025.

Growing and Moving Forward

UNWTO brings together political leaders from across the globe to deliver a strong, coordinated response. Governments, destinations, fellow UN agencies and international organizations met at key international events joining efforts to rethink tourism. Institutional coordination has proven crucial to find the solutions that build a smarter, greener and safer tourism.

Leaving Nobody Behind

The pledge to ‘ leave nobody behind ’ means nobody should miss out : Not now as we support the sector in the face of crisis, and not in the future as tourism starts again. Tourism is a proven driver of equality and opportunity. And that’s why we turn words into actions, delivering guidelines and action plans , to ensure everyone can enjoy the opportunities tourism brings.

A Shared Vision

Advancing the transformation of the tourism sector , partnerships are the only way forward. In 2021, UNWTO signed agreements with international organizations and the private sector to step our vision for the future of tourism: innovation , education , sustainability , green investment , rural development.

World Tourism Barometer: September 2022

UNWTO updates World Tourism Barometer and reports international tourism back to 60% of pre-pandemic levels from January to July 2022

unwto tourism highlights 2022

Below are excerpts from the September 2022 release of the UNWTO Tourism Barometer :

  • The steady recovery reflects strong pent-up demand for international travel, especially in the months of June and July which are part of the Northern Hemisphere summer season. The easing or lifting of travel restrictions in an increasing number of countries also contributed to boost results.
  • International tourist arrivals almost tripled (+172%) in January-July 2022 compared to the same period of 2021. Numbers climbed from -64% in January 2022 (versus 2019) to -28% in July, the strongest month since the start of the pandemic.
  • Asia and the Pacific (+165%) saw arrivals more than double in the first seven months of 2022, though they remained 86% below 2019 levels.
  • The ongoing recovery can also be seen in outbound tourism spending from major source markets. Expenditure from France was at -12% in January-July 2022 compared to 2019 while spending from Germany stood at -14%. International tourism spending remained at -10% in Belgium, -23% in Italy and -26% in the United States.
  • The uncertain economic environment seems to have reversed prospects for a return to pre-pandemic levels in the near term. 61% of UNWTO Panel of Experts now see a potential return of international arrivals to 2019 levels in 2024 or later while those indicating a return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 has diminished (27%) compared to the May survey (48%).

TOURISM TRENDS 2022

unwto tourism highlights 2022

11 Aug TOURISM TRENDS 2022

The situation for tourism remains rather unusual as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The crisis has marked a significant change for everyone, and above all for tourism, one of sectors hit hardest by the virus. 2020 was the year in which international tourism came to a near-complete standstill, and the only alternatives were domestic and local tourism.

2021 has seen some improvements, but only in a very subtle way as restrictions are still in place and many countries keep their borders fully or partially closed.

It is difficult to make an estimate for 2022 as it is not known how the pandemic will evolve. However, it is possible to talk about the new tourism trends that are likely to emerge over the coming year: – International travel with restrictions still maintained by both destinations and airlines in order to offer 100% security to the consumer.

– Reinforcement of COVID-19 testing; two years after the pandemic, COVID testing will still be in place as a preventive measure. – Conscious travel will be advocated. Travel to more distant destinations, but with prolonged durations of stay, as consumers look to enjoy as much of each place they visit as possible. – Green travel. Climate change is a problem that is present and growing. Consumers now are much more responsible and aware of the reality they live in on daily basis.

– A new trend is the “ed-ventures”. It is about combining education and holidays for the youngest members of the family. While adults may need to telework or attend meetings, their children can be doing workshops and learning in a playful way.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Japan is restricting the view of this famous attraction due to over-tourism

Mt. Fuji and Tokyo skyline

Social media feeds with aesthetic snaps of Mount Fuji will look a lot different very soon, as Japanese authorities have resorted to a drastic measure because of misbehaving tourists.

A spot in the town of Fujikawaguchiko, outside a Lawson convenience store, has become an immensely popular photo op for snapping a particular shot of Mount Fuji behind it.

Although Japan ’s highest mountain can be pictured from many spots around Fujikawaguchiko, this particular point of view entices visitors because of the juxtaposition. While there are approximately 14,000 Lawson stores in the country, only one has the sacred, 3,776-metre active volcano in the background.

But now, this particular view is set to change. A mesh net measuring 2.5 metres (8ft) and spanning 20 metres – about the length of a cricket pitch – will begin construction as early as next week.

‘It’s regrettable we have to do this, because of some tourists who can’t respect the rules,’ an official from Fujikawaguchiko town told AFP via The Guardian . Rowdy tourists are leaving litter behind and are said to be ignoring traffic regulations.

Visitors are also gathering on a stretch of pavement next to the Lawson shop, the official said.

There are over 679,000 posts on Instagram listed under the #mountfuji hashtag. It doesn’t take long to find snaps showing the Lawson store, as well as other pictures of the mountain.

A search for both hashtags #mountfuji and #lawson in the same entry reveals dozens of Instagram users posing in the same spot in the area with the juxtaposed mountain and convenience store shot, which will now be restricted.

An exact number of posts like this is not available to see on the Instagram app, but officials are aware of people going to great lengths to get their own version of the snap. ‘A reputation has spread on social media that this spot is very Japanese, making it a popular photo location,’ the town official said.

A record number of overseas tourists are arriving in Japan and monthly visitors exceeded three million in March for the first time.

Mount Fuji in Japan

Mount Fuji is a hot commodity and this isn’t the first time officials and sought to control tourists to protect it and the surrounding area. It attracts thousands of climbers ever year and in 2023, 221,322 people made the ascent.

But concerns over rubbish and hiker safety has lead to Japanese authorities imposing the new tax. The UNESCO World Heritage site will charge tourists to visit. This summer, beginning on July 1, hikers using the most popular route will be charged ¥2,000 each (£10.50, $13.35) to ease congestion.

The Yoshida trail is the most popular climb, as it’s considered one of the easiest. A 14.5 km loop, it’s easily accessible from Tokyo , and has lots of stops along the way offering refreshments and places to stay.

But Japan’s Yamanashi prefectural government, which oversees the hiking activities , has said a toll is necessary in order to protect the environment.

There will also be a daily limit of 4,000 hikers a day, and you won’t be able to start your climb between the hours of 4pm and 2am.

There are even plans to install a gate at the start of the trail, to ensure everyone pays the fee.

The move to thwart over-tourism around Mount Fuji is the latest action taken in Japan against tourists, after residents of Kyoto’s geisha district banned so-called ‘paparazzi tourists’ earlier this year.

Japan has long been a popular tourist destination, but since reopening its borders in 2022, it’s seen a boom in tourism.
