Destination Must-See's

Morocco ms1

Rick’s Cafe:

Featured in the blockbuster movie Casablanca from 1942, a visit to this restaurant is sure to spark your nostalgia. Feel like you’ve stepped into the movie as you surround yourself in the scenery reminiscent of the film. Although this is a recreation, not where it was filmed, your imagination will take hold as you watch the film on repeat and get a taste of what it was like back in the day.

Morocco ms2

Casablanca:

Morocco’s largest city, main port and most cosmopolitan city, this bustling metropolis and economic hub is sprinkled with tree-lined parks and charming colonial architecture. Its most famous landmark is the elaborate Hassan II Mosque, one of the world’s largest mosques built on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

Morocco ms3

Mud brick homes:

These homes have been used throughout the world but are extremely popular in the Middle East, India and North Africa. A mud brick is made of mud or clay that is mixed with straw and hardened by baking it in the sun or a kiln. It is very inexpensive and is environmentally friendly. And most importantly, keeps houses cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Morocco ms4

Moroccan people:

The Berber people are Morocco’s original inhabitants but it has been touched by many cultures because of its location. As a result, its people are amongst the friendliest and most hospitable people in the world. Today, it is considered an Arab nation, but you can see the diversity of the country, particularly in the variety of languages spoken – French, Spanish, Arabic and Berber dialects.

Destination Must-Do's

Morocco md1

Enjoy the cuisine:

When visiting Morocco you have to try a local favorite – stuffed bread. It is comparable to a flat bread sandwich in America with a Moroccan touch. This savory meal is filled with traditional fillings including beef or lamb suet, onions, parsley, and Moroccan spices – ginger, white pepper, coriander, turmeric, allspice, and cinnamon.

Morocco md2

See the Markets:

Souks, local markets, immerse you in the culture of morocco. Every Moroccan town has a souk quarter typically named after the day of the week they are open. No matter where you are you will find busy aisles lined with vendors selling many types of products – rugs, jewelry, metals, wood and pottery, clothing, leather goods and fresh food.

Morocco md3

Visit Rug Makers:

Traditionally, Moroccan rugs were hand woven and tied by the Berber tribe women and can take up to a year to complete. Some rugs are made as a floor covering and others are woven to hang from the wall like a tapestry. Rug designs typically depict a piece of history passed down from generation to generation, or tell the story of the weaver’s life, representing things from femininity to spirituality.

Morocco md4

Feed the Monkeys:

Learn all about MonkeyWatch, a primate eco-tourism, anti-poaching conservation program run by the Moroccan Primate Foundation in Ifrane National Park. It works to protect the Barbary apes and macaques that live in the forests of the park. Visitors will even get a chance to feed these wonderful creatures.

Expert Advice

diana

If you have some extra time before your tour begins to explore Casablanca, you’ll find plenty to do! Venture out to Safi, a port that has been of importance since Roman times, and view its grand ramparts and the fortress of Dar el Bahar.

Morocco e2

You’ll find many unique gifts in the souks (local markets). When venturing out during the day, it is typically very warm so be sure to wear loose, breathable but conservative clothing. In Moroccan culture, long skirts or slacks would be appropriate, but please no short hemlines, tank tops or tight fitting clothing.

Morocco e3

You’re in for a treat as you discover the flavors of Morocco! Be sure to try fish tagine, a mqualli (or sauce made with ginger, saffron and oil) combined with chermoula, olives and preserved lemons to add some zest and extra flavor!

A former imperial city known as the ‘Red City’, Marrakesh is filled with treasures. See Morocco’s largest traditional souk (market) where you can learn the art of haggling, visit the grand Bahia Palace, and soak up the energy of Djemaa el Fna Square in the Old Quarter, where you’ll find acrobats, camels and palm readers.

Enjoy a visit to the Royal Palace in Rabat

We’ll take you for a drive along the coast to the capital of Rabat, where our Local Specialists will reveal all the wonders of the city. Visit the 17th century Royal Palace, where the king of Morocco lives, and see the royal guards at the entrance, with flowerbeds, fountains and antique cannons.

Take in panoramic views of Dades Valley and Berber villages

We’ll travel into the Sahara to see the brilliant desert sunset and meet the local Berber tribesmen, before spending the night surrounded by the spectacular Atlas Mountains.

Wander around Fez

Connect with the symbolic heart of Morocco in Fez, the oldest imperial city in the country. Our top 5 things to do in Morocco

Our Morocco holiday packages delve into the vivid culture of the country, with visits to a traditional tannery, the souks of Marrakesh, and the Berber villages of the Sahara.

Dar Si Said

Housed in a 19th century palace, Dar Si Said is a fantastic folklore museum in Marrakesh. You’ll discover Islamic architecture and artisan craftwork, including an Andalusian fountain basin that’s more than 1,000 years old. It’s also surrounded by several courtyards and gardens where you’ll find ornate stucco, tiled mosaics and carved wooden ceilings.

A former royal palace converted into a museum in 1915, Dar Batha was the first museum in Morocco. The beautiful building now contains around 6,000 collections of zellige tiles, embroidery, jewellery, coins, carved wood, carpets and a large collection of the famous cobalt-blue ceramics of Fez.

Mohammed VI Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art

Located in Rabat, this museum of contemporary and modern art contains an excellent collection of Moroccon and international art. It’s housed in a gleaming white building inspired by Arab-Moorish architecture, and you can see the works of 200 Moroccan artists including Ahmed Yacoubi and Hassan Hajjaj.

Best museums in Morocco

Our Morocco guided tours will reveal the country’s vivid culture and history through its museums, including a museum of Moroccan art and a former royal palace.

Tagine has been part of Moroccan culture for hundreds of years. It’s a delicious stew-like dish made of slow-cooked meat, like chicken or fish, and vegetables or fruit. The dish is named after the North African clay or ceramic pot in which the dish is cooked.

Also known as sikuk or seksu, couscous is the beloved national food of Morocco. It’s a dish of steamed balls of crushed semolina, flavoured with herbs and spices, and served with meats and vegetables. Most Moroccan families eat couscous on Fridays, although you can sample this tasty dish any day of the week.

Fish Chermoula

Chermoula is a thick relish or marinade, used as the foundation of many Moroccan dishes. It’s made with a variety of herbs and spices like cumin, paprika, parsley and pepper, and is classically used to flavor fish and seafood dishes, such as fried sardines and fish tagine.

What to pack for Morocco

People packing for a tour

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Adaptor plug

In Morocco, the standard voltage is 220 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type C and E. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.

Modest clothing

When visiting Morocco, you’ll need to wear modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Bring light, loose clothes for the heat and warm layers for chilly desert nights.

A scarf is useful for everyone as it keeps the sun and sand off your face, while women can use it to cover their head when visiting mosques.

Slip-on sandals

In Morocco, you’ll need comfortable sandals that you can easily slip off when entering homes, hammams and some traditional restaurants.

Sunscreen & sunglasses

The sun can be intense in Morocco, so protect your eyes with UV-protected sunglasses and your skin with SPF 30 or higher.

Best of Morocco

15 days | all the best bits of morocco, from colourful cities and medinas to the mountains and the desert.

Three travellers sit on a high overlook looking out over blue painted buildings of Chefchaouen

If you’re looking for a two-week adventure full of Morocco’s highlights, this trip is for you! From sacred sites and bustling medinas to the expanse of the Sahara, you’ll be hitting all the popular hotspots and stopping for air in some of the country’s best scenery. Wander in the lanes of the blue city Chefchaouen, explore the Roman ruins of Volubilis and find the cultural heart of Morocco in Fes. Drive through everchanging scenery (look out for Barbary apes and nomadic shepherds along the way), ride a camel towards a desert sunset, hike through lush palm groves in Todra Valley, discover popular filming locations in World Heritage-listed Ait Benhaddou, kick back and unwind in seaside Essaouria and top it all off with the street food bazaars and performers in Djemaa el-Fna Square in Marrakech.

Trip overview

  • Trek through the dramatic red dunes of the Sahara Desert on a camel’s back, experiencing an unforgettable sunset – then stay under a blanket of North African stars in a desert camp.
  • Embrace the Atlantic breeze in the coastal town of Tangier and see the vivid blue hues of Chefchaouen over sunset, while you explore the houses and laneways of this surreal city.
  • Stay in a traditional Amazigh homestay high in the Atlas Mountains and enjoy a homecooked meal of Moroccan favourites, learning about the culture and traditions of an Indigenous population who’ve stood the test of time.
  • Kick back in the coastal town of Essaouira and discover the winding laneways at your own pace. Then, meet a local fisherman by the seaside and learn about his life and this traditional practice.
  • Explore the old medina of Marrakech and the labyrinthine medina of bustling Fes with knowledgable local guides, discovering the myriad of sights, smells and sounds along zigzagging lanes. Then, discover the colourful chaos of Djemaa el-Fna Square.
  • Don’t let the heat keep you from exploring the world! Summer temperatures can be extremely high in Morocco (over 40°C), which can make things uncomfortable. It’s essential to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat, and drink plenty of water.
  • Ramadan is an annual month-long festival, during which travel can be a rewarding cultural experience, however some regular services may not be available during the day, such as restaurants or cafes, and occasionally travel can be disrupted by events. Your leader will adjust the itinerary accordingly, but please consider this when selecting your travel dates. You’ll find dates and further information in the ‘Climate and seasonal information’ section of the Essential Trip Information.
  • There are a couple of long travel days on this trip, particularly the day travelling to the Sahara Desert. Rest stops will be made on the way and you’ll be rewarded with great views on the drive itself.

View the itinerary for departures between 01 January 2024 - 31 December 2024

Salaam Aleikum! Welcome to Morocco. Your adventure begins today with a welcome meeting at 6 pm in the famed city of Casablanca. If you’d like to explore the city and all it has to offer, it’s recommended that you arrive a day or two early. Modelled after Marseille in France, this city is famous for its art deco buildings and the modern Hassan II Mosque. If you have time, wander the old medina and the city walls, then jump in a taxi to visit the Quartiers des Habous – the new medina. Finish the day with a walk along the Corniche, watching the locals play football on the beach or taking it easy at one of the many great cafes.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Casablanca - The Medina and Beyond Urban Adventure - MAD700
  • Casablanca - Jewish Museum (entrance fee) - MAD50
  • Casablanca - Villa des Arts Gallery & Museum (entrance fee) - Free
  • Casablanca - Hassan II Mosque - MAD130

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Please be aware that some of our travellers in Casablanca are being approached by locals offering excursions before their Intrepid trip commences. This has been particularly prevalent in and around the hotels used by Intrepid. These guides are in no way connected to Intrepid Travel, and we cannot guarantee the safety or quality standards of their tours. We strongly advise customers against joining any tour offered by unauthorised guides.

This morning, take the TGV fast train to the coastal town of Tangier – a place of strategic importance to the Mediterranean as a gateway to Africa. Head out on a short orientation walk with your leader, then enjoy some free time exploring the town. Maybe duck into Café Hafa, which has hosted celebrities in the past like Sean Connery, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Why not enjoy the epic view overlooking the Gibraltar while you partake in the national brew of Morocco – a steaming cup of mint tea? In the afternoon, take a private transfer to the beautiful Chefchaouen. Set against a wide valley and nestled between two peaks in the stunning Rif Mountains, much of Chefchaouen was recreated by Andalusian refugees escaping the Reconquista – so you might just feel like you're in the hills of Spain. Follow your leader on an orientation walk and head to a great sunset viewpoint overlooking the town. In the evening, if you're feeling peckish, the local goat’s cheese is a popular treat.

  • Chefchaouen - Leader-led orientation walk
  • Chefchaouen - Sunset viewpoint
  • Tangier - Leader-led orientation walk

Your travel time today will be approximately 5 hours.

Today is a free day in Chefchaouen. Maybe take a guided tour of the sights, sounds and smells of the medina, or sample the delicious local specialties (the orange juice is delicious!) at a cafe in the Plaza Uta el-Hammam. Alternatively, you might prefer to get out of town and enjoy a hike and picnic in the surrounding hills. The hiking tour outside of the city is a popular option, as you can leave the shades of blue for a journey across the Rif Mountains and join your guide to Akchour Falls – a gorgeous natural wonder, abundant with lush mountains, rivers and waterfalls. In the evening, how about tucking into a tagine at a local restaurant or visiting a hammam – a traditional Moroccan spa? The night is yours to enjoy.

This morning, take a private transfer and travel through rolling hills and olive groves to the archaeological site of Volubilis. This was once a provincial Roman capital, and the remains make an undeniably impressive sight. Take a tour around the ruins with a local guide, which look spectacular in the sunlight. Don’t forget to take your camera today, as the town is filled with fantastic mosaics along the Decumanus Maximus, many of which remain fully intact. Drive onwards to Fes, where you'll spend the next two nights. Fes is the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco – vibrant, noisy and fascinating – it really is a feast for the senses. The evening is then free for you to spend how you’d like.

  • Volubilis - Entrance and guided tour

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours. Remember to pack drinking water, a hat, sunglasses and sun cream for your tour of Volubilis, as it may get very hot and you will be exposed to the sun.

Take a guided group walking tour of the Old City this morning, known locally as Fes el Bali. Step back into the Middle Ages in the labyrinth of the medina, which is alive with craftsmen, markets, tanneries and mosques. Pass donkeys piled high with goods (this is one of the largest car-free urban zones in the world) and explore the specialty sections that divide the souk. Look out for the Medersa Bou Inania – one of the city's most beautiful buildings, recently restored and now open to tourists. Visit Medresse el Attarine and the splendid Funduk Nejjarine – a beautifully restored 18th-century inn. You'll also see the famous tannery, known for the iconic view overlooking its dye pits, and a ceramics factory where you can see potters working traditionally. In the evening, why not join your group and try some Moroccan specialities like harira (chickpea soup) and chicken-stuffed pastillas with couscous?

  • Fes - Medina walking tour
  • Fes - Medersa El Attarine
  • Fes - Funduq al-Najjarin
  • Fes - Tannery visit

There will be 5 to 6 hours of walking today, but this is an integral part of experiencing Fes to the fullest.

Today's experience is also filled with shopping experiences at a few carefully selected places. If shopping is not your thing, don’t worry! Discuss other options with your tour leader beforehand and they’ll accommodate you. You may have some free time to explore at your own pace, but keep in mind that your leader won't be able to set a meeting point inside the medina as it can be quite challenging to navigate the old alleyways. If you decide to explore on your own, you can easily catch up with the group at the hotel.

Today, you’ll travel towards the mighty Sahara. It is a long drive, but there will be many opportunities to stop and admire views of local kasbahs and palmeries (valleys lush with date palms, fields and orchards). You may also have the chance to pass by nomads along their journey – these free-spirited people are born to move with their animal flocks under the open sky and they never stay settled in one place for long. Continue through barren mountainsides and fertile valleys, pausing in frontier towns like Erfoud and Rissani before reaching the end of the road at the small Saharan settlement of Merzouga. With a backdrop of the orange-coloured Erg Chebbi sand dunes, the charming Saharan village of Merzouga feels wonderfully isolated, like the modern world has left it behind. Store your main baggage in your overnight camp on the edge of the desert and mount a camel to watch the breathtaking sunset from a unique perspective, among the rolling dunes of the expansive desert. Spend the night in a desert camp under the North African stars and enjoy a homecooked feast by the fire.

  • Desert Camp (Multishare) (1 night)
  • Sahara Desert - Sunset Camel Ride

Your travel time today will be approximately 8 hours.

The camp is simple, with bedding and basic toilet facilities. The blankets are warm enough for most travellers between April and October, but you may like to bring your own sleeping sheet and an extra jumper from November to March if you prefer. Electricity is not available in the camp, so it’s important to come prepared with phones, cameras and everything else you may need fully charged.

The camel ride is a highlight for most in Morocco, but if you’d prefer not to, it's possible to walk alongside the caravan on the sand instead. The walk takes about an hour and is not very demanding, so you will manage with just a basic level of fitness.

Walk up the nearest dune for a spectacular sunrise over the Sahara, break your fast with traditional food, and begin the drive to Todra Gorge. On the way visit the oasis museum of El Khorbat, before continuing on to the beautiful Todra Valley, dotted with mud-brick villages perched on hillsides. The remarkable scenery – sprawling green valleys and rocks sculpted into stunning formations by the wind – will be your home for the next two nights. This area is best discovered on foot, so you’ll take a short walk through the surrounding farmland.

  • El Khorbat – Oasis Museum
  • El Khorbat – Kasbah village visit
  • Sahara - Sunrise

Today, enjoy free time to explore the Todra Valley. A guided hike through the gorge and over a nearby mountain pass is highly recommended. There are a couple of circuits to choose from, but the most popular choice is a 10 km circuit that will take around 4 hours. Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll walk a trail that isn't too challenging if you have a moderate fitness level. Pass Amazigh villages, meeting locals along the way. The surrounding mountains and the famous Rose Valley in the distance make a sensational setting for a day of discovery on foot. For lunch, you can join some local ladies in their mudbrick kasbah – a fantastic opportunity to see how people live in this largely unchanged culture. If you’d rather relax, then you can simply lounge by the hotel pool and enjoy the views over the lush palmeries and soaring cliff faces.

  • Todra Gorge - Half day hike - MAD250
  • Todra Gorge - Lunch in a mudbrick kasbah - MAD100
  • Todra Gorge - Henna Tattooing - MAD50
  • Todra Gorge - Hamam (Public Baths) - MAD100

The optional walk around Todra Gorge takes place over rocky terrain and the first part is more challenging as it winds over a steady incline. Going back down may be slippery, especially after a rainy day. Please be prepared with good walking shoes or boots and ensure you have a moderate fitness level.

Today, travel south to Ait Benhaddou. The scenic drive takes you past ancient kasbah ruins, former colonial military outposts, austere mountains and valleys of palm trees. Stop for lunch in Ouarzazate, where movies such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Sheltering Sky and Black Hawk Down were filmed. If there’s time, you might like to take a tour of the Atlas Movie Studios. Arrive at Ait Benhaddou – once an important stop for caravans carrying salt across the Sahara. Visit the grand kasbah with your trip leader – an impressive example of clay architecture that has been listed as a World Heritage site. In the late afternoon, enjoy Morocco's most famous cuisine with your group – couscous and tagine cooked by your host at the guesthouse where you’ll spend the night.

  • Guesthouse (1 night)
  • Ait Benhaddou - Leader-led ksar walk
  • Ouarazate - Atlas Movie Studios - MAD80
  • Ouarzazate - Kasbah Taourirt - MAD20

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

This morning, journey over the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2260 metres above sea level) to Toubkal National Park, home to the highest mountain in North Africa. Pass snow-capped mountains and valleys in full flower along the way. At the end of the road, you’ll reach the rural village of Imlil, where you can store your main luggage and load a daypack onto a pack mule. Immerse yourself in traditional mountain village life with a short trek up to the peaceful village of Aroumd. Far from the reach of the modern world and sitting on a rocky outcrop, this town is a gorgeous place for an I’m-so-far-from-home moment. With stunning views across the High Atlas Mountains, you’ll have a unique opportunity to experience traditional Amazigh culture and spend the night in a family-run mountain home (or gite) at the foot of Mount Toubkal. Surrounded by the smell of woodstoves and bread, meet the host family and enjoy some traditional Amazigh hospitality and mouth-watering home-cooked food.

  • Gite Homestay (Multishare) (1 night)

If you feel uncomfortable with the walk through the villages, you can opt to ride a mule instead or a car may be organized at an extra cost if you let your tour leader know in advance. You may choose to bring sturdy boots if you prefer but a pair of good walking shoes with rigid and grippy soles will be sufficient.

Facilities at the homestay are shared (both the bathroom and sleeping arrangements) but cosy, comfortable and definitely a better way to immerse yourself in the culture than a hotel.

Wake up early this morning for a refreshing hike through Imlil’s outlying villages – to Sidi Chamharouch. Explore rural Amazigh villages, twisting mule tracks and breathtaking mountain landscapes. Stop for breaks among imposing cliff faces and eventually reach Sidi Chamharouch – a pilgrimage site with a waterfall, a stream and a few simple houses. Enjoy a slow-cooked tagine made by a local for lunch, while enjoying incredible views of the Atlas Mountains. Take the opportunity to rest for a while and swap stories with the locals, before hiking back to Aroumd. Later, head towards the Atlantic Coast to the old fishing town of Essaouira. Sandstone walkways contrast whitewashed houses, bright blue sky and the surrounding beaches and dunes. This artists' town was once home to sizeable British and Jewish populations, and its charm has seduced people like Orson Welles and Jimi Hendrix, who (according to local legend) spent much of his time here in the 1960s. Your tour leader will guide you through some options for the rest of the day – the seafood auctions are always a fun thing to see. Maybe you’d like to visit one of the small local cafes and do a spot of people-watching. Tonight, you’re free to indulge in a fresh seafood dinner or stroll by the beach in the evening light.

  • Atlas Mountains - Half-day hike
  • Atlas Mountains – Local lunch with mountain view

Today, join a local guide for a walking tour through the old medina, Jewish mellah, port and Skala (sea wall). Essaouira is one of the oldest port cities in the country, and fishing here is still quite traditional. You’ll have the chance to meet one of the expert fishermen in the port, who will tell the group all about their story and show you some of the tricks they use, what type of fish to catch and what seasons mean to them. After, enjoy some free time. These narrow streets, mostly free of cars, feel like the days of sea pirates are not too distant. Browse the little shops and art galleries that dot the town and discover the gorgeous scent of the burled Thuya wood – delicately formed and inlaid here, gaining a reputation as one of Essaouira’s specialities. The scent of the oils that are used to polish the coloured wood permeates the air, making walking through these streets incredibly pleasant. Why not order a freshly cooked plate of the day’s freshest catch for lunch? Later, maybe indulge in a hammam (Moroccan bathhouse and spa) or relax at your accommodation.

This morning after breakfast, take a shared local bus to Marrakech – the ancient, exotic city wrapped in European modernity. Embark on a walking tour with your trip leader through the bustling medina to meet local shop owners and craftsmen and learn the secrets of navigating through the zigzagging lanes. Stop to try different snacks and local favourites, like Moroccan doughnuts and mint tea, traditional bread, olives, nuts, dates and orange juice, and harira (chickpea soup). Be enticed by the alluring scents and brilliant colours of the spice markets, the sounds of the musicians, the rich folds of carpets, and the beautifully perfumed gardens. Tonight, maybe join the pulsing crowds for dinner at the famous Djemaa el-Fna Square – one of the largest public spaces in the world and unique to Marrakech. When night falls on this square, it transforms into a hive of activity. Henna painters, performers and storytellers share the square with a street food bazaar packed with stalls loaded with Moroccan delicacies. For dinner tonight, you might like to try the local snail soup and finish your evening with a cup of tea in a rooftop restaurant overlooking the square.

  • Marrakech - Medina walking tour
  • Marrakech - Tasting Trail

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

It’s time to explore Marrakech at your own pace, today. In the seemingly endless mosaic of souqs, each is devoted to a separate trade – pottery, woodwork, copper, leather, carpets or spices. Watch skilled artisans perfect their craft, practice your haggling skills or take a break from the hustle to share a tagine with your new friends. Maybe visit Koutoubia Mosque and its 12th-century minaret, which was the famous prototype for the Giralda tower in Seville. Wander through the tropical gardens of the French painter Jacques Majorelle (now owned by Yves Saint Laurent) or check out the Palais Bahia, a superb example of Muslim architecture. This evening, you’ll likely be drawn back to the Djemaa el-Fna and its surrounding medina for dinner at one of the many outdoor restaurants lining the square – a perfect spot for a farewell dinner.

Entering a desert encampment after a sunset camel ride, you see only the glowing Berber tents carpeted with kilims. Cumin-scented stew simmers over a campfire. And away from the native singers and the circle of light, the sky is simply amazing. Not until a morning breeze stirs your tent’s flap do you see in full light how stunning your desert setting is. Our Morocco travel adventure is full of surprises and this is just one of the many we share with you. Colossal Saharan dunes. Cool cedar-forested mountains. Narrow gorges with ribbon-like oases in their depths. And the Kasbah? It’s the word for fortress and a restored one from the Middle Ages is actually one of our hotels. The marvelous news is that, for all its surprises and adventure, Morocco travel also delivers everything you expect. We take in the vivid, noisy markets as we travel. Morocco offers warm hospitality from a culture accustomed to the diversity of Berber, Arab, Jewish, African and Mediterranean influences. You may also be surprised to know that the climate is moderate; this is the coolest and most welcoming of the African nations.

• Go on foot at eye level to explore Fès’ labyrinthine 9th-century Medina.

• Savor the cuisine influenced by French, Portuguese, Arabic and Berber peoples at a variety of exceptional meals, including La Maison Bleue, one of Morocco’s finest restaurants.

• Walk through olive groves outside of Fès’ to visit the countryside home of friends who welcome you in for a memorable lunch.

• Cross the Middle Atlas Mountains where walks lead you through cedar forests and alongside shepherds moving their sheep and goats up and down the cinematic hillsides.

• Walk with a Berber tribesman through verdant countryside to an ancient village for a visit with local school children.

• Climb on to your own camel for a cinematic ride to the 1,000-foot-high sand dunes of Merzouga.

• Time the arrival to your private luxury encampment in the Saharan desert for sunset.

• Marvel at the otherworldly setting of your gourmet dinner under the star-filled skies.

• Follow the desert’s edge to a spectacular oasis where your footpaths are the same as the local women who walk to market in colorful dresses that match the vibrant bougainvillea that flourishes here.

• Channel your inner Indiana Jones as you visit a remarkable clay city on the caravan trail to Timbuktu.

• Walk among and between countryside villages in the Ourika Valley, following scenic paths that crisscross rivers and lead to tea with a family in their home.

• Explore Marrakesh like a native, following in the footsteps of Ives Saint Laurent at his home and gardens, and shopping in the world-famous souks for carpets, tribal jewelry and Moroccan crafts.

• Celebrate your final evening with cocktails and dinner in an elegant private residence.

Morocco Guided Tours & Guided Vacations

EXPERIENCE WITH TAUCK

A day of immersion in Berber culture and cuisine, including dining, music, and entertainment under desert tent, and a camel ride

TAUCK VALUE INCLUDES

Lunch in a terraced home in Moulay Idriss near the ruins at Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Lunch at Rick's Cafe in Casablanca, modeled on the one in the film Casablanca

Exclusive dinners in beautiful riads in Fes – rooftop farewell reception (weather permitting) in Marrakech

Choice of a Moroccan cooking class, a photography tour of coastal gem Essaouira, or a pampering hammam spa treatment

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Active components such as hiking, bicycling and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two to three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Experiences of a lifetime

Experience the heart of Morocco, Africa at Europe's doorstep… ancient cities, medinas, kasbahs, and souks… windswept coastline and desert treasures… on a 10-day journey through a timeless land...

Visit the leather tanneries of fes, a trip through time at the ancient leather tanneries of fes.

Like an artist's tray of paints, the huge vats of dyes that decorate the urban landscape around the redolent tanneries of Fes are awe-inspiring... no less than the processes the tanners use to dye and dry leather, virtually unchanged since medieval times. The tanners' tools include water, limestone, pigeon droppings, and their bare feet and hands to knead and dye the leather to its required consistency, which may eventually grace the souks of the medina as exquisite purses and slippers.

Dinner in the desert, Berber-style

Travel by 4x4 vehicle to a berber-style dinner in a desert camp.

In the desert outside Marrakech, ancient Berber villages preserve time-honored folkways and rituals – like the traditional Moroccan tea ceremony – that have survived for centuries. Ride aboard a 4x4 vehicle to one of these villages for tea with the village chief and a crash-course in Berber culture. Then it's on to our desert camp, where dinner is served Berber-style under a tent with musical entertainment. Experience local customs like riding a camel... smoking shisha (using a hubbly-bubbly pipe, or hookah, to smoke flavored tobacco)... or having your hands or feet decorated with traditional henna designs!

Four Seasons Resort Marrakech

Nights 6, 7, 8 and 9

Capturing the magic of Marrakech...

Imagine a place where you can lose yourself in the magic of Marrakech from the comfort of a luxury resort. A place where Moorish gardens surround silvery swimming pools... where jasmine and roses perfume the air... where exotic experiences are part of daily life and where your wish is our pleasure. Imagine Four Seasons Resort Marrakech... where traditional values and contemporary comforts unite.

Tauck filled every day with the variety and culture of the country we enjoy and have come to expect. The architecture was amazing and the food was fabulous!

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Morocco; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Morocco to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We strongly recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Morocco. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally , please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries on the itinerary to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

To enjoy this active tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. We recommend that you pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in to appreciate fully what Morocco has to offer.

Active components such as hiking, bicycling and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two-to-three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty. Your journey is moderately paced, and may include some early morning hotel departures and extended motorcoach travel.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

It's hot and sunny for most of the year in Morocco. During the peak summer months it gets uncomfortably hot especially in Marrakech, Fes and southwest Morocco. Rabat and Casablanca are a bit more comfortable in the peak of summer because they benefit from a cooler ocean breeze.

What To Pack

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

As Morocco is a Muslim country, dressing modestly will make both you and the people you meet on your travels more comfortable.  Generally this means covering the shoulders and knees.  Women will need to cover their hair only when we visit the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca.  Scarves will be provided on the tour.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey to Morocco:

  • Cotton, cotton/synthetic and linen clothing
  • Light weight shirts, pants, capri pants and dresses
  • Light jacket or sweater
  • Jacket and tie and casually-elegant attire for fine dining
  • Comfortable walking shoes that will work well on uneven or cobblestone pavement
  • Shoes will only need to be removed when the tour visits the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca.  Please bring at least one pair of socks for this visit.
  • Hat (a wide brimmed hat is recommended)
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Soap leaves, travel packets of tissues, handkerchiefs and hand sanitizer
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

Morocco - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Morocco is an exotic country - from ancient towns to chaotic cities, from remote villages to gorgeous coast, there are so many sights to see.

Morocco is an exotic country that never stops amazing you with its sights and surrounds. From ancient towns to chaotic cities, from remote villages to gorgeous coastal resorts, the country presents a variety of things to see and do that are sure to cater to all kinds of travelers.

Beautiful golden sand beaches, a long coastline that borders the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, four majestic mountains, vast open expanses of the great Sahara Desert, exotic vineyards and cascading rivers; some of the many beautiful things a tour to Morocco willoffer. Once you’re done with that natural beauty, you can also choose from urban explorations, desert towns such as Ouarzazate (yes, this is the town featured in movies like Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Kingdom of Heaven).

Tour Highlights

  • Stroll the blue streets of Chefchaouen
  • Ride a camel through the Sahara Desert
  • Shop in the leather bazaar in old Fes
  • Watch snake charmers at the Djemma el Fna square in Marrakech
  • Relax in the steam bath of a traditional hammam

Travel Tips

  • Exchanging money before your trip can be difficult due to Morocco’s currency laws that prevent you from bringing more than 1000 Moroccan Dirhams in or out of the country (the equivalent of about US$106). Set aside time at the airport upon arrival to exchange your currency.
  • Visitors, like Moroccans, are expected to dress conservatively, especially women. Cover your shoulders, knees and chest as much as possible.
  • Always ask permission before taking photographs of locals, particularly in rural areas. Some believe cameras can capture a person’s soul using black magic, so asking is always a respectful gesture.
  • Be sure to pack layers, as temperatures can drop drastically at night, particularly in the winter. At the same time, daytime temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius in the summer!
  • As a Muslim country, Friday is the weekly holy day in Morocco. Many shops will be closed on Fridays (particularly after midday) so locals can attend prayer, so buy what you need beforehand.

Morocco has seasonal weather so please do check up on the  best time to visit Morocco  before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Morocco, do check out our Morocco Travel Guide for more information.

Ten days in Morocco is the ideal duration to explore the highlights and visit the top destinations of the country. Rabat in Morocco

Morocco — Top destinations to visit

  • Blast through the Moroccan Sahara Dunes:  Covering 30 percent of the African continent, the Sahara Desert is one of Morocco’s top attractions. Explore the Moroccan Sahara Desert as there are endless adventures and activities you can enjoy in this sea of sand. From multi-day camel treks and sandboarding through the shifting dunes to spending nights beneath the stars at a Berber desert camp, the Sahara is a smorgasbord of fun adventures.
  • Visit ancient tanneries in Fez: The ancient art of tanning leather in Fez has changed little since the 11th century. The unmistakable smell of the tannery pits floats in the air for miles. Visit Fez which is home to three vast tanneries that create one of Morocco’s most extraordinary sights. The city’s largest and oldest tannery is the Chouara Tannery. Located in the Fes el Bali near the Saffarin Madrasa, the facility is a sight to behold, with its hundreds of stone vats filled with leather. You will be given a sprig of mint to place in your nose to mask the smell but be prepared for an assault on the senses. A guide will take you through the tannery, and you will be able to get up close to watch the whole medieval process.
  • Shop for souvenirs at Jemaa el-Fna Marrakech: Located in the heart of Marrakech’s ancient medina (old city), Jemma el-Fna is a vibrant, bustling marketplace and the beating heart of the city. Dating back to the 11th century, the square is one of the main cultural spaces in Marrakesh and has been designated as a Unesco Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This is the place to find a range of treasures, from leather goods and brass cups to handmade jewelry. In the evening, the square comes alive with storytellers, snake charmers, Chleuh dancing boys, magicians, and traditional medicine men. But do keep your wits about you and avoid carrying valuables when visiting Marrakech .
  • Wander the Blue Alleys of Chefchaouen:  Nestled in the Rif Mountains of northwest Morocco, explore the city of Chefchaouen , or Chaouen is famous for its extraordinary blue-hued buildings. Founded in 1471, the city only began to turn blue in 1492 when Jewish immigrants settled in the city and brought a tradition of painting buildings blue. Wander around the cobblestone lanes and marvel at the beauty of the blue buildings. Visit the 15th-century fortress of Kasbah with its red walls and dark dungeons. Sunrise and sunset are magical times of the day in this city. Be sure to capture them with your camera. Visit the pretty Ras El Maa waterfall for a cool dip in the fresh mountain water.
  • Relax in a Casablanca beach resort:  Kick back and relax at one of the luxurious beach resorts while you travel to Casablanca . This cosmopolitan city is often overlooked in favor of Marrakech, but it has so much to offer and beautiful beaches are just one of them. Boasting beautiful views of the ocean, most resorts here have gorgeous swimming pools, lush tropical gardens, and deluxe spas. You will also find fantastic restaurants serving top-notch local cuisine and buzzing bars.
  • Relish the magnificent architecture of Rabat: Explore Rabat , the capital of Morocco which is known for its striking and unusual architecture, and if you are a lover of design, then wandering around the city is a must. Blending ancient history and striking modernity, the city is home to an eclectic mix of Arabic and Western architecture ranging from the Abul Hassan Medersa dating back to the 1300s to the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Rabat built in 1921. Stroll around the spectacular Andalusian gardens in the Kasbah of the Oudaias for a moment’s respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Morocco is arguably the place to experience the biggest and most incredible culture shock if you don’t want to fly too far away (at least from Eastern Canada). This North African nation has great attractions, both cultural and natural, to make for an epic and very unique trip.

I loved my many weeks in Morocco on 3 separate trips, and I still haven’t explored so many of the amazing places.

It’s also quite inexpensive, being one of the 30 best affordable countries to travel to for less than $40 total per day . To continue our accommodation prices feature , we’ll share a separate post with many lodging price examples for these Moroccan destinations soon .

Here are the 12 best destinations in Morocco.

Map of the 12 best destinations in Morocco

Morocco is a country a bit larger than Newfoundland and Labrador in size. It has 38 million inhabitants, which is almost the same as Canada.

Here’s a map to locate all the destinations in this post.

Map of Morocco showing the location and photos of the 12 best destinations and announcing the prices examples will come soon.

1. Casablanca

Nicknamed the “White City,” Casablanca is Morocco’s largest city, with around 4.3 million people in its metropolitan area (about the same as Montreal).

White building with an arched entrance in a street in Casablanca, Morocco.

Founded in the 7 th century, it’s the country’s main economic and financial hub, featuring one of the largest man-made harbors in the world! I was pleasantly surprised by the city.

You can explore the impressive Hassan II Mosque, one of the biggest mosques ever built that I found very impressive to see, or the vibrant markets of the Old Medina.

You will enjoy the scenic Corniche with its lovely cafés and parks. Don’t miss the Art Deco architecture in the Maarif neighborhood and the iconic Rick’s Café, inspired by the movie “Casablanca”.

2. Marrakech

Often called the “Red City,” Marrakech (sometimes spelled Marrakesh) is one of the country’s 4 historical imperial cities and a gateway to the Atlas Mountains and Sahara desert.

Cars parked on the street in Marrakech, Morocco, near a brown concrete building with a mosque in the background.

While it is just Morocco’s 4 th - or 5 th -largest metropolitan area (depending on definitions), it’s the most visited by foreign travelers. Its population is around 1 million, slightly more than Winnipeg or Québec City.

The Medina of Marrakech is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its vibrant souks and the busy Jemaa el-Fnaa central square. Get lost in the splendid Jardin Majorelle and Bahia Palace, or relax in a hammam to immerse yourself even more in the local atmosphere. If you want to enjoy the nightlife, head to the Gueliz and Hivernage districts.

You can read our 10 places to visit in Marrakech for more details.

Fès (sometimes spelled Fes or Fez) is known as the “Mecca of the West” or the “Athens of Africa” and is considered Morocco’s spiritual and cultural heart. It has many mosques, Islamic schools called “madrasa,” and traditional crafts. Fès is also an imperial city.

You’ll notice that the architecture varies a lot between Fès el-Bali and Fès el-Jdid, 2 distinct maze-like medinas, and newer areas like Ville Nouvelle (New Fès). The combined medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is even one of the largest urban car-free areas in the world! It was like stepping back in time.

During your stay, you can explore stunning madrasas like Bou Inania and Al-Attarine or admire (and smell!) the artisanal leather factories at places like Chouara Tannery and the Dar Batha Museum.

Tangier (sometimes spelled Tangiers or Tanger) is located in northern Morocco on the Strait of Gibraltar. It’s famous for its beaches, café culture, historic port, and lively Medina.

In the 20 th century, due to its status as an international zone belonging to no country, it was a popular meeting place for spies and diplomats, as well as artists and writers who often gathered at iconic spots like Café Hafa.

Start your visit by exploring the souks and the Kasbah area for panoramic views of the coastline. At the Museum of Moroccan Arts and Antiquities, you’ll learn everything about Tangier’s rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions.

Tangier Beach and Achakkar Beach are perfect for sunbathing or water sports. I really enjoyed the city, which is just a short 1-hour ferry ride from Spain.

8. Merzouga

Merzouga is a small village in southeastern Morocco. It’s famous for its breathtaking Sahara Desert views and for being the gateway to the famous Erg Chebbi sand dunes.

Here, you’ll find peace and quiet away from the big cities.

Thrill-seekers can try sandboarding, quad biking, and 4×4 excursions. At night, staying in traditional Berber desert camps offers a chance to enjoy local hospitality and listen to traditional music under the stars.

9. Ouarzazate

Ouarzazate is Morocco’s Hollywood, with many studios and locations for filming movies and TV shows taking advantage of the unique architecture and landscape.

For example, the Taourirt Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah have been featured in many films.

Ouarzazate is also known as the gateway to the Sahara Desert. Outdoor enthusiasts love the surrounding beautiful valleys, palm oases, and the dramatic views of the Atlas Mountains.

10. Tinerhir

Tinerhir, also known as Tinghir, is a town in Morocco’s eastern High Atlas Mountains. This location is famous for being very close to the iconic Todgha Gorge.

View of Todgha Gorge in Tinghir, Morocco.

This amazing canyon, carved by the Todgha River, has limestone walls over 400 meters high, making it a paradise for climbers and hikers!

In addition to the gorge, you can visit the palm groves or explore the town for traditional Berber architecture, small markets, and cozy cafés.

11. Essaouira

Essaouira is a coastal city in western Morocco. It was built on fortified walls surrounding its historic Medina.

It’s earned UNESCO World Heritage status for good reasons — it’s beautiful and rich in history. People love it for its arts scene, beaches, fishing traditions, and its annual Gnawa and World Music Festival.

You can climb the Skala de la Ville ramparts for panoramic views of the ocean and the blue and white Medina. It’s a great destination if you love art galleries, fresh seafood, or water sports like windsurfing and kiteboarding.

In southern Morocco, the major coastal city of Agadir is famous for its beaches and climate, as well as its unique Amazigh (Berber) culture. Ethnic Berbers predate the arrival of Arabs in Morocco and represent 30% of the country’s population, with many in the Agadir area.

The city has a very modern layout, which you don’t find often in Moroccan cities. Check out the wide boulevards, sandy beaches, and awesome views from the Kasbah (Agadir Oufella). Then, you can buy spices, fabrics, and souvenirs at the bustling Souk El Had market.

It’s also a great spot for day trips to the Atlas Mountains — the city is near the foot of the mountains — and desert adventures.
