Information for U.S. Citizens in Russia – Travel Options Out of Russia

U.S. citizens should leave Russia via commercial options still available. The situation on Russian borders is always changing.  We update this page once every three months.

Air travel options for U.S. citizens:

• Be aware the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) downgraded the air safety rating for Russia, as a result of Russia’s Federal Agency for Air Transport failing to meet International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety standards. For more information on this matter, click  here .
• Explore commercial air routing through non-European destinations.
• Ask family and friends outside of Russia to help buy airline tickets. This is especially helpful if credit/debit cards are not working, as described below.
• Consider contacting a global travel company to buy airline tickets.

Travelers may also depart via some of Russia’s land borders. More information is below.

Use of Credit/Debit Cards & Access to Foreign Currency:  International sanctions have been imposed on Russian banks due to Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. As a result, U.S.-issued credit and debit cards will not work in Russia. Travelers may consider using local credit cards, cash, or other forms of payment. Travelers can also ask family and friends outside of Russia to buy their ticket. U.S. citizens should take this into account when making plans.

Be aware the exclusion of Russia from the SWIFT system has made money transfers to/from the United States impossible. The Bank of Russia announced that non-residents from “both friendly and unfriendly countries” may transfer funds abroad in the amount of their wages although there remains a ban on transferring funds abroad for non-residents from “unfriendly countries” that do not work in Russia, as well as legal entities from such states. This ban may be extended beyond its current end date of September 30, 2024. In addition, non-residents may have difficulty withdrawing foreign currency, including USD, from accounts held in Russian banks.

Departing Russia by Air:

If you want to leave Russia by air, be prepared to comply with your destination's entry requirements. Direct flights are now operating from Moscow and other major Russian cities to Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Thailand, India, and other destinations.

Departing Russia by Land:

If you want to leave Russia by land, be prepared to comply with your destination’s entry requirements,  which may differ from the entry requirements for travelers arriving by plane . Travelers should also be aware that not all border crossings may be open. Travelers should check the website of the U.S. Embassy in the country you wish to visit for more information. Departing Russia by Sea:

While ferry availability changes often, some ferries from Russia to other countries may be running, including from Sochi to Trabzon, Turkey.

Visa Requirements for Families with U.S. and Russian Citizen Family Members

The following information may be useful to families with both U.S. and Russian citizen family members that are considering departure options:

No Visa Required for Russian Citizens

Azerbaijan:  Russians do not need a visa to enter Azerbaijan and can stay for up to 90 days.

Bahrain:  Russians can get visas on arrival.

Georgia:  Russian citizens do not need a visa to enter Georgia.

Kazakhstan:  Russian citizens can enter Kazakhstan without a visa by air for up to 90 days but not more than 90 days within a 180-day period.

Mongolia:  Mongolia does not require a visa for temporary (30-day) stays of Russian nationals. It only requires a passport with at least six-months validity.

Qatar:  Russian citizens can enter Qatar visa free for an initial 30-day stay. They have the possibility to extend 30 additional days.

Serbia:  Russians do not need visas to enter Serbia and can stay for up to 30 days.

UAE:  UAE offers visas on arrival for Russian tourists with authorization for a 30-day stay. Russian tourists can extend these visas to 90 days.

Visa Required for Russian Citizens

Estonia:  The Estonian government does not allow Russian citizens with short-term Schengen visas to enter Estonia for tourism, sports, or culture.  The entry restrictions do not apply to Russian citizens who are long-term residents of Estonia or to individuals traveling to Estonia to visit family who are Estonian citizens or long-term residents.  The rules also exempt workers involved in transporting goods and passengers, and also include individuals in certain humanitarian circumstances. Finland:  Russian citizens need a visa to enter Finland. Finland has greatly reduced the acceptance of tourist visas for Russians. Priority is given to those applying for a visa due to family reasons, work, or study. In extreme cases, the Finnish Border Patrol will consider parole entry if the person is transiting Finland or has other extraordinary circumstances.

Latvia:  Visas are required for Russians to enter Latvia. They are currently not being issued except for some specific funerals. For more information, please contact the  Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Lithuania:  Russian citizens need a visa to enter Lithuania. Lithuania is no longer issuing visas to Russian citizens. Lithuania does not allow Russian citizens with short-term Schengen visas to enter Lithuania for tourism, sports, or culture. Exceptions apply for family members of EU nationals, seafarers, people transiting to Kaliningrad, and in other humanitarian situations.

• Azerbaijan's land borders with its neighboring countries remain closed, except for freight transportation. Entry into Azerbaijan is possible only by air.
• Azerbaijan’s national air carrier, AZAL (Azerbaijan Airlines), operates regular flights from Moscow's Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports, St. Petersburg, Astrakhan, Kazan, Mineralniye Vody, Makhachkala, Novosibirsk, Samara, Sochi, Ufa, Volgograd, and Yekaterinburg.

Belarus Do not travel to Belarus due to the Belarusian authorities’ continued facilitation of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the buildup of Russian military forces in Belarus, the arbitrary enforcement of local laws, the potential of civil unrest, the risk of detention, and the Embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to Belarus. • Estonia does not allow air traffic from Russia due to EU sanctions. U.S. citizens may cross into Estonia but family members of other nationalities may need Estonian visas to enter.
• Estonia no longer allows vehicles with Russian Federation license plates to enter Estonia. Drivers and passengers of Russian-plated vehicles may cross the border on foot and must leave the vehicle behind in Russia. The ban does not apply to international passenger transport buses.
• Lux Express continues to offer bus service between St. Petersburg and Tallinn. If you travel by bus from Russia to Estonia, expect longer than normal wait times to cross the border.
• Dual U.S.-Russian citizens have reported difficulties entering Estonia. U.S. citizens with other nationalities should be ready to prove their citizenship and show travel details to Estonian border guards.
• There are currently no ferries operating from Russia to Estonia.
• As of February 1, 2024, the Russian Federation closed the Narva-Ivangorod border crossing for construction. It is closed to all motor vehicle traffic in both directions. Russian authorities say the border may be closed for approximately two and a half years. It is still possible to cross the Narva-Ivangorod border on foot but crossing by vehicle is not possible. Buses still travel between Russia and Estonia, as noted above, but passengers will have to cross the border on foot and transfer to a different bus. In addition, as of May 1, 2024, the Narva-Ivangorod border crossing will be closed at night between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. and no crossings will be permitted during that time, including for pedestrians.
• Vehicles can still cross the Estonian-Russian border at the Koidula-Kunitsina Gora and Luhamaa-Shumilkina border crossings, with limitations imposed on Russian Federation license plates as noted above.

• All land border crossing points between Finland and Russia are closed. Check the Finnish Border Guards website for updated information regarding Finland’s borders and entry requirements, check the Finnish Border Guards website.
• Finland’s national railway operator has suspended service between

• There are currently no ferries operating from Russia to Finland.
• When the border is open, travelers may not cross the land border on foot.

U.S. citizens with expired passports may transit Finland to the United States, but they must contact the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki at  [email protected]  in advance and provide the traveler’s name, arrival time, vehicle information, and U.S. airline ticket information.

Passengers transiting Finland may not cross the border outside regular opening hours except to make connecting flights/ferries.

• Latvia no longer allows entry for Russian-registered and plated private vehicles. This includes those owned or driven by U.S. citizens. We recommend traveling via plane or bus.
• There is direct bus service from Moscow and St. Petersburg to Riga via the Ecolines buses, which depart daily.
• There is no train or ferry service which travels directly from Russia or Belarus to Latvia.

Another service member detained while on unauthorized travel, this time in Venezuela

A U.S. sailor who was in Venezuela without authorization or knowledge of his chain of command was detained by authorities there in recent days, defense officials said. The sailor is the second U.S. service member in five months to be taken into custody during unauthorized travel to a less-than-friendly nation.

A U.S. soldier snuck into Russia in April to meet his girlfriend and was arrested. He remains in Russian custody.

U.S. government officials have not publicly identified the sailor, and no information was immediately available about why he went to Venezuela, though a defense official confirmed he did not inform his chain of command he intended to visit the country. The Defense Department strongly advises U.S. service members against traveling to Venezuela, per State Department guidelines.

“We are aware of reports that a U.S. Navy sailor was detained on or about August 30, 2024, by Venezuelan law enforcement authorities while on personal travel to Venezuela,” a defense official told Task & Purpose on Thursday. “The U.S. Navy is looking into this and working closely with the State Department.”

The U.S. government is trying to get more information from Venezuelan officials about the situation, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby told reporters on Wednesday.

“We’re obviously in touch as appropriate, as you would be, with Venezuelan authorities to try to get more knowledge,” Kirby said.

News of the sailor’s detention comes days after U.S. government officials announced they had seized a plane belonging to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro for alleged sanctions violations.

The State Department, which withdrew all its diplomatic personnel from the U.S. embassy in the country’s capital, Caracas, in March 2019, has issued an advisory urging American citizens to not travel to Venezuela.

“The Department has determined there is a high risk of wrongful detention of U.S. nationals in Venezuela,” the travel advisory reads. “Security forces have detained U.S. citizens for up to five years. The U.S. government is not generally notified of the detention of U.S. citizens in Venezuela or granted access to U.S. citizen prisoners there.”

In December, the U.S. government secured the release of 10 Americans from Venezuela, including six whom it classified as “wrongfully detained,” as part of a prisoner exchange. As part of the agreement, former defense contractor Leonard Glenn Francis — better known by his nickname “Fat Leonard” — was arrested and returned to the United States.

Francis had pleaded guilty to bribery and conspiracy charges in connection with a scandal that rocked the Navy, but he fled the United States in 2022 before he could be sentenced.

At least one other service member is being held in another country after going there on unauthorized leave. Army Staff Sgt. Gordon Black was recently sentenced to nearly four years in prison in Russia on charges for allegedly threatening and stealing from his girlfriend.

Black, who is married and in the process of getting a divorce, flew from South Korea to Russia via China to meet a woman even though U.S. service members are prohibited from traveling to Russia. He had just out-processed from Eighth Army at Camp Humphreys, South Korea and had signed out on Permanent Change of Station to leave to travel to Fort Cavazos, Texas.

Black’s mother Melody Jones told Task & Purpose in May that she believes her son’s girlfriend set him up to be arrested by luring him to Russia. She also begged him not to travel to Russia.

When Jones asked her son if he had received official permission to go to Russia, he did not answer, she said.

“I said, ‘You didn’t, did you?’ And he would never tell me if he did or didn’t,” Jones recalled. “And I told him, ‘You didn’t get permission to go to Russia. There’s no way. They’re not going to let you go there. I said, ‘why don’t you meet in Thailand, China, anywhere but there?’”

Russia’s New Nuclear Missiles Squeeze Response Time

As treaties end, Russia focuses on hypersonic weapons that could “tighten the noose” on current U.S. defenses

It is being republished because of Russia’s claim, reported this past weekend , that it has used hypersonic missiles for the first time, striking targets in Ukraine with its Kinzhal missiles.

Both the United States and Russia last month pulled out of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), a Cold War–era pact that prohibited land-based ballistic or cruise missiles with ranges between 311 and 3,420 miles. That agreement limited just one class of weapons, but it is not the only accord poised to end: The much-broader New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) will expire on February 5 next year, unless both parties agree to extend it—which they may not do .

New START limits the number of missiles the U.S. and Russia deploy , with an eye toward reducing the overall number of nuclear weapons in the world. Without it, for the first time since 1972 there would be no limit on how many warheads either nation can build and deploy. As tensions rise, both countries are looking to modernize their nuclear weapons, and Russia in particular is teasing terrifying new missiles that—if they work—could bypass the U.S.’s elaborate system of ground- and satellite-based defenses.

“The Russians really hate missile defense,” says Jeffrey Lewis, a nuclear policy expert and professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, Calif. “They really don’t like the possibility that they might be outmatched technologically. So there’s a whole battery of Russian programs—from the doomsday torpedoes, to nuclear-powered cruise missiles, to hypersonic reentry vehicles, to anti-satellite weapons.”

Last year Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled six new weapons during a governmental address. The most impressive, according to nuclear experts, were the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle, the nuclear-powered cruise missile Skyfall and the RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). These three are the crown jewels in Russia’s aggressive new nuclear policy, capable—according to Putin—of circumventing U.S. missile defense systems. Currently, American defenses are designed to knock an incoming nuke out of the air before it can hit its target—but this was already a complicated and difficult task before the development of hypersonics.

Although Russia’s new weapons sound frightening, none has actually been deployed yet. They may be ready in the next year or two , but “none of them are fully operational,” says Philip Coyle, a board member of the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation. Coyle (who has also served as U.S. assistant secretary of defense), explains that some have been tested, but “none of them have been so successful that they can claim to have operational capability.”

But that doesn’t mean Coyle is not worried, especially about hypersonic threats. “Some of those would be impossible for United States missile defense systems [to counter],” he says, “especially the hypersonic air-to-ground-system and the hypersonic glide system, both of which [Putin] said had been successfully tested.” The current crop of weapons that defense experts label as hypersonic reach speeds greater than 3,000 mph .

Inside the Nuclear Arsenal

Other countries, including the United States and China, have also tested hypersonic weapons—but it is Russia’s hypersonic glide vehicle, the Avangard, that has garnered the defense community’s most intense attention. Glide vehicles could theoretically combine the maneuverability of a cruise missile with the speed of an ICBM. On a traditional nuclear launch involving an ICBM, a powerful rocket sends the warhead on a trajectory similar to a space launch (long-range ICBMs even go suborbital) before it turns around and plummets to Earth at hypersonic speeds. Glide vehicles like the Avangard would ride an ICBM into the sky, but they would then be released and soar along at the top of the atmosphere—above sensor range—before heading to their targets.

However, not everyone is fretting about high-speed glide vehicles. “I’m not so impressed by those,” Lewis says. He says the vehicles themselves, once released, will no longer be traveling at hypersonic speeds (although other experts disagree with this assessment). “The missile is gliding, so it actually slows down quite a bit and makes a much better target [than traditional ICBMs] for missiles defenses,” Lewis says. The vehicle could supposedly move to evade a defense system, but Lewis remains unconvinced. “It’s great that it can maneuver so that it doesn’t come into the range of missile defenses. But if it does, it’s going to be a much brighter target because it’s moving more slowly and it’ll be superhot,” he says. “The hypersonic gliders people are talking about actually represent slower reentry than what currently exists.”

Instead Lewis worries more about the Skyfall, the nuclear-powered cruise missile carrying a nuclear warhead. “I’m a little bothered by the menagerie of science fiction ideas that the Russians are working on,” he says. “We don’t know much about the technology behind that one (Skyfall), but certainly when the U.S. investigated the idea it was pretty nasty in terms of radiation released just to power it.” According to Putin , the Skyfall is a superpowered Tomahawk cruise missile launched via ground or air. The best Tomahawks can travel 1,550 miles—but with a nuclear reactor powering it, the Skyfall effectively has an unlimited range. Russian military sources reported the country had successfully tested the cruise missile in January 2019; however, U.S. intelligence suggests that it has yet to demonstrate a range greater than 22 miles, and may not reach its full potential for another 10 years.

Still, a radiation-spewing cruise missile with unlimited range is not Russia’s only frightening new weapon. It is also testing the RS-28 Sarmat, a liquid-fueled ICBM designed to brute-force its way through U.S. missile defense systems. The missile is fast, huge—119 feet tall with a weight of more than 220 tons—and full of weapons: It carries a 10-ton payload, big enough to include 24 separate nuclear-tipped Avangard hypersonic glide vehicles.

And the Sarmat is dangerous for reasons beyond its size. According to Coyle it also has a shorter-than-usual boost phase (the period of an ICBM’s launch when it is rocketing into the atmosphere), which gives U.S. missile defenses less time to shoot it down. If a brief launch window is not enough to protect the missile, Coyle says, “[Putin] also said that Sarmat would carry countermeasures designed to confuse U.S. anti-missiles systems.”

Response Time

The Sarmat’s short boost phase exemplifies what really makes these missiles so terrifying: time. Nuclear warheads are always dangerous, but the U.S. has long relied on its ability to create lead time between launch, detection and response. Essentially, the longer the commander-in-chief has to decide how to react to the news of an ICBM launch, the better. The abilities of these new weapons—short boost times, hypersonic speeds and unlimited range—all eat into those precious minutes. “It’s going to tighten the noose around our necks,” Lewis says. “These systems add complexity and reduce decision time. That’s the kind of change that can really threaten stability.”

Meanwhile, the most recent U.S. Nuclear Posture Review and Missile Defense Review promised to develop America’s own hypersonic weapons. The reviews also teased the creation of new sensors, floated the idea of turning the F-35—the new U.S. fighter jet—into an ICBM killer, and suggested developing space-based sensors to augment American missile defense systems. But both reviews were long on theory and short on details. In particular, Coyle says, “The Missile Defense Review is unclear about what it is we would deploy in space.”

As for shoring up U.S. defenses, the Pentagon is trying to develop hypersonic counter-measures. At the moment, the country’s missile defense shield includes a mix of 44 ground-based interceptors ; Terminal High Altitude Area Defense systems deployed in Guam, the United Arab Emirates, Israel and South Korea; and Aegis missile defense systems on U.S. Navy ships around the globe. New plans include everything from thousands of interceptors orbiting the Earth to lasers fired from satellites , and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is actively searching for a “glide-breaker, ” a way to fight against hypersonic glide vehicles like the Avangard.

However, these protections are still theoretical. At the moment, no one has a concrete solution to the threat—and Russia continues to build and test new and potentially devastating nuclear weapons.

How to get to Russia in 2024 (INFOGRAPHIC)

For citizens of 65 countries, a visa is not even required to enter Russia. For the majority of these countries, the length of stay without a visa is up to 90 days; however, for some, it’s shorter, so be sure to check.

In 55 more countries – including countries in Europe and Asia, such as Germany, Denmark, Japan, China – you can apply for an electronic visa to enter Russia. In this case, the length of stay in the country is up to 16 days. We addressed all queries regarding how to do it in detail here and you can find the full list with all countries here .

2. Transport

As of January 2024, 36 countries have direct flights to Russia, among which are Israel, China, Turkey and many others. The majority of European countries, however, are not on this list; they prohibited their airlines from conducting passenger flights to the territory of the Russian Federation. The only European country from where you can board a direct flight to Russia is Serbia.

Three other most popular hubs, from which you can come to Russia on a direct flight:

• Yerevan, Armenia
• Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Aside from that, you can reach Russia also on land transport – with a car, bus or train. However, in 2024, the checkpoint on the border with Finland is currently closed, which was a convenient route for the residents of the Scandinavian nations, while Finland itself is, as of right now, unavailable. 

Several other countries – Estonia, Latvia and Norway – are also contemplating the possibility of closing their borders with Russia, but, for now, this hasn’t happened and the passage is open (we advise you to follow developments closely, however). The route from Georgia to Russia via Vladikavkaz remains one of the most popular land routes, due to which there are still hour-long waiting lines at the border.

3. COVID restrictions, vaccinations & quarantine

In 2022, the government of Russia canceled all restrictions linked to the COVID-19 pandemic; in 2023, it allowed foreign tourists to enter the country without a negative PCR test.

However, there are still occasional random COVID-19 checks at airports, so don’t be surprised if you are asked to get tested.

Ukraine war latest: UK to send hundreds of missiles to Ukraine; Russia fires more than 40 drones overnight

Russian attacks on Ukraine overnight have caused fires and injured at least five people across the country, local authorities report this morning.

Lviv regional authorities said drone debris fell in an industrial zone, setting fire to four trucks. 

Images show fire crews extinguishing a blaze at a site where warehouse facilities were hit during a Russian drone strike in the village of Murovane, in the Lviv region.

Ukraine shot down 27 out of 44 Russian-launched drones overnight, the country's air force has said.

Russia also used two missiles in the attack, the air force added in the statement via Telegram.

Drones attacks have been used by both Ukraine and Russia during the war, with both country's sending drones into each other's territory.

However, in the last few months, the frequency with which both sides send drones over the border has increased.

Ukraine's parliament approved the appointment of a new foreign minister, with the war against Russia poised for what could be a pivotal phase.

Andrii Sybiha, a former ambassador to Turkey, is the country's new chief diplomat. 

He replaced Dmytro Kuleba, who became one of Ukraine's most recognisable faces on the international stage as he petitioned and pleaded with Western countries to support Ukraine's war effort.

Mr Sybiha has been working as Mr Kuleba's deputy since April.

Mr Zelenskyy wants to replace almost a dozen top officials in his biggest government shake-up since Russia's full-scale invasion.

The war, now more than 900 days long, is on the cusp of what could be a key period.

And a likely hard winter lies ahead, testing the country's resolve.

Ukraine's power grid is under severe strain after Russian missiles and drones knocked out around 70% of the country's generation capacity. 

On the battlefield, Ukraine is waiting to see whether the military's gamble with its surprise invasion into Russia's Kursk border region works.

The UK will send 650 missiles to Ukraine in a £162m commitment to the country's defence against Russia, the defence secretary is expected to say during a visit to Germany today.

John Healey will announce Britain's latest commitment to Kyiv's war effort when he meets fellow ministers from across Europe at a defence summit.

The meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group will take place at the US Air Force base in Ramstein, Germany.

Mr Healey will use his first appearance as defence secretary at the latest meeting of the group to reaffirm the new government's commitment to Ukraine.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, the minister said: "This new commitment will give an important boost to Ukraine's air defences and demonstrates our new government's commitment to stepping up support for Ukraine."

He added: "In recent days we have seen the tragic cost of Russia's indiscriminate strikes on Poltava and Lviv. These new UK-made missiles will support Ukraine to defend its people, infrastructure, and territory from Putin's brutal attacks.

"With our international partners today, we will show that we are united for Ukraine. And we will discuss how best we can work together to improve support. Because the security of the UK and Europe starts in Ukraine."

For context : The 650 lightweight multirole missile (LLM) systems is hoped to help boost Ukraine's air defence capabilities as it continues to defend against the Russian invasion and are expected to be delivered by the end of the year.

The UK has delivered hundreds of LLM to Ukraine in the past, and the latest order is expected to be the first part of an effort to step up European defence production in aid of the war effort.

Yesterday Ukrainian politicians voted to appoint nine new ministers, including the foreign minister, in Volodymyr Zelenskyy's biggest government reshuffle since the start of the war.

The shake-up of Ukraine's government saw foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba resign after more than four years in the post after reportedly coming under pressure from Mr Zelenskyy's chief of staff. He was replaced by experienced diplomat Andrii Sybiha.

It comes at a crucial diplomatic moment as Kyiv continues to call on its allies for more help and the Ukrainian president prepares to visit the US to present his "victory plan" to Joe Biden.

In his nightly address, Mr Zelenskyy said the government needed "new energy" and that this autumn would be important for his country.

Also in the past day: 

• Vladimir Putin claimed Kamala Harris was his preferred choice to win the US election in November, saying her "infectious" laugh was a reason to pick her over Donald Trump;
• One person was killed and three others injured in a Russian shelling attack in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk, prosecutors said;
• NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg said Ukraine had achieved "a lot" in its shock invasion of the Kursk border region in Russia a month ago - after Mr Putin said earlier that the operation had failed;
• Meanwhile, the Kremlin claimed, seemingly without evidence, that instructors from different countries had been taking part in military actions and training Ukrainian forces.

It would be "absurd" for the UN-backed International Monetary Fund (IMF) to resume cooperation with Russia, Kyiv has said, following reports the IMF is planning to send its first mission to the country since it invaded Ukraine.

The IMF's Russian representative Aleksei Mozhin told Reuters this week that the mission - the first since 2019 - would go ahead on 16 September.

It will be the first major international financial body to send its official mission to Russia since Moscow sent its troops onto Ukrainian soil.

Ukraine says it is "concerned" at the reports and said it would be "absurd for the main financial institution of the United Nations to legitimise the Russian regime that commits horrific atrocities".

The IMF has been criticised by several Western member states during the war for providing what they say are overly optimistic outlooks about the Russian economy.

Russia's daily casualty rate has increased, with Ukraine's invasion of its Kursk border region partially the cause, the UK defence ministry has said.

In its latest intelligence update, the MoD cited Ukrainian military figures suggesting the average number of Russians killed and wounded increased to 1,187 a day in August.

It added that Russia has "likely suffered over 610,000 casualties" during the war.

"The August 2024 increase in casualty rate is almost certainly due to Ukraine's Kursk operation and continued pressure on the Pokrovsk axis," the MoD said. 

It added that Russian pressure on the frontline would continue, but "their capability constraints will likely continue to reduce their ability to exploit any tactical successes into wider operational gains". 

The MoD also said Russia's casualty rate would likely "continue to average above 1,000 a day throughout September".

It's important to note that Russia and Ukraine separately report battlefield casualty figures which often contradict each other.

Poland has rowed back on its claim that a drone likely entered its airspace during a Russian attack on Ukraine last month.

A Polish army spokesperson said an object that entered the country's airspace early on the morning of 26 August was "most likely a drone" but weather conditions meant it couldn't be identified with complete certainty.

After 10 days of analysis and an extensive search failed to produce any trace of a Russian drone, General Maciej Klisz, head of the Polish army's operational command, said he believed the airspace had not been violated

"As a result of the analytical activities undertaken, I currently state that with a very high probability there was no violation of the airspace of the Republic of Poland on 26 August," he told reporters.

Poland has reported several other airspace violations during Russia's war with Ukraine, and General Klisz warned they could happen again.

The US has charged a Russian TV pundit and his wife over two separate schemes to violate sanctions imposed after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

The Department of Justice alleges that Dimitri Simes, 76, and Anastasia Simes, 55, took part in a plot to violate sanctions "for the benefit of sanctioned Russian broadcaster Channel One Russia", and to launder funds obtained through the scheme.

The couple have a home in the US state of Virginia but "remain at large and are believed to be in Russia", the department said.

Both are charged with one count of conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, one count of violating the act, and a count of conspiracy to commit international money laundering.

They face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
