correct transfer case fluid

  • Add to quote

What fluid should be going in my transfercase? I have a 04 automatic f250 Thanks guys.

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Mercon ATF i think LV or SP

The owners manual says Mercon ATF, but I wouldn't use LV or SP in the transfer case (too thin IMO) and Ford specifically says not to use Mercon V. Ford has a specific transfer case fluid (Motorcraft: XL-12), but I use the Royal Purple SynchroMax. There are other good aftermarket transfer case choices that should work just fine.

Mobil 1 synthetic ATF or the Royal Purple Synchromax would be my choices (have used the Synchromax for over 100k miles). I doubt that you could go wrong with the Motorcraft fluid, it is just that I haven't seen it sold in 1 qt quantities.

Really wouldn't have an opinion on that. It is probably closer to the SP and LV specs, but I am just guessing.

Thanks, as always I respect your opinion and look forward to your no nonsense informative answers.

FYI - Both Mobil 1 Syhthetic ATF and Valvoline Maxlife meet Mercon specifications (per their product sheet). Here is the data on viscosities for the various products: Mobil 1: 40*C - 36.3 cSt 100*C - 7.4 cSt SynchroMax 40*C - 38 cSt 100*C - 7.7 cSt Maxlife 40*C - 28.5 cSt 100*C - 6 cSt Mercon SP 40*C - 27.3 cSt 100*C - 5.7 cSt Mercon LV 40*C - 29.6 cSt 100*C - 6 cSt Ford's Transfer case fluid (XL-12 part #): 40*C - 32.5 cSt I believe that Ford would have recommended SP or LV for the transfer case if it were a good fit. Simply put - they didn't. Instead, they sell their own transfer case fluid (about the same price as SP IIRC). For those reasons, I don't use SP or LV (and also because they are slightly lower viscosity fluids). As you can see above, the Maxlife closely matches the SP and LV (this is one reason people are recommending it as a substitute for LV and SP). I chose to use a slightly more viscous fluid to more closely match the old Mercon Specs. Disclaimer - anytime you go aftermarket on these fluids, there may be some odd chemical additive incompatibility (so there is some risk not using the Ford fluid). I have had good luck with the Synchromax for over 100k miles (changed at 50k, 100k, 150k). I usually will just be quiet about choices like this until I have enough experience with it. 100k miles is a minimum amount of experience for me to recommend anything IMO (and I would prefer 200k miles). Some people certainly may have had that (and more) with the Maxlife in the transfer case. If so, I would love to see it. At that point I would gladly change my mind to it and that would lead me to accept SP and LV in the transfer case also.

Might have to give that synchromax a try. Thanks for the info bismic i enjoy reading your posts :thumb:

I learn something everyday here. Thanks! I would have tried the Mobil had I done more research. I was one of the ones looking for a quality fluid that matched Mercon specs.

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

I use Amsoil or Mobile1 synthetic.

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Would the same thing be for the ZF? Cause if I remember, it also says ATF.

Not 100% sure, but I believe so.^^^

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

I use amsoil in transfer case, differentials, tranny.

Change that transfer case fluid!!

I finally got the plug out of the case yesterday...and drained the fluid. GOOD LORD...this stuff was black and about as thin as water. I'll post up pix of it a bit later...I set some aside to show you guys. But this stuff was nasty. Refilled with 2qrts of Amsoil Synth ATF and I feel much better. If you haven't changed your fluid in awhile...or not sure when it was done...might be something work looking into. I am sure glad I did.

i change my every 30k, and thats abotu when it starts to look a little gross, just fill up with the ford stuff!

For all I know this could have been the fluid that came from the factory. But it was nasty.

I changed mine at 80k and the fluid looked brand new. Refilled with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Mobil 1 Synthetic is ok for the transfer case? Cause I happen to have several quarts in the shed from the wifes old Honda. I think I'll change it this week! :thumbsup

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

once we get into the new place and get settled some....I'm gonna drain every fluid from the truck and redo it....I can just imagine what mine looks like :bubbakevin:bubba

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

The fluid is a 100k oil but if you are launching in 4 wheel I would do 50k. I got everything fixed FYI. THANKS Bill

I don't race or sled pull. Just tote the camper and drive through snow in the winter. Thanks Bill.

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

It's not like you don't have enough ATF .......

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Pepsi

That is some dirty oil I must agree it was due don't need a oil sample for that one. Bill

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Dave, are you going to send out that fluid for analysis?

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Thats some really ugly looking T-case fluid. Glad you got that outta there before some damage occured!

Man...you two fight more than a married couple LOL

I was trying to get along.:bang Bill

:haha :haha :haha Dave was teasing us.

The tranny and t-case are easy enough to access I change those fluids out every 15K miles--some guys might call it overkill but the fluid is cheaper than a new gearbox by a mile.

jvencius said: The tranny and t-case are easy enough to access I change those fluids out every 15K miles--some guys might call it overkill but the fluid is cheaper than a new gearbox by a mile . Click to expand...

I guess I look at it if you put the best in your truck you are covered if you don't get carried away. Bill

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Can you use Mercon SP in the Tcase?

Spec is Mercon V, so I wouldn't. Plus, Mercon SP is a lot more expensive.

Its the Mercon V formula, so it should be fine.

Mine says Multi Vehicle Formula, suitable for use in vehicles that require "Ford* MERCON*, MERCON V, MERCON LV" not recommended for "CVT applications, Mercon® SP, Ford Type F" http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Other_Products/Mobil_1_Synthetic_ATF.aspx

Yeah, same stuff I used.

I hope yours didn't look as nasty as mine did.

Transfer case fluid is a specialized lubricant used in four-wheel drive (4WD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles. Also called a secondary transmission assembly, the transfer case distributes power to all four wheels as needed or selected for traction, off-roading, and more. Much like the engine or transmission utilize specific types of oil, the transfer case is filled with transfer case fluid to keep the gears properly lubricated and protect its internal components against friction and wear. This helps dissipate heat during operation, and allows power to be distributed from the transmission to the front and rear axles, providing the wheels with appropriate torque and improved traction in harsh driving conditions. Though it is possible to check your transfer case fluid level, it's not as easy as it is to check the levels in most engines or transmissions. Be sure to consult your owners manual for specifics about your car's configuration and how to properly check transfer case fluid level and condition. If you have difficulty shifting into or out of four-wheel drive, or if you hear grinding, humming, or growling noises underneath your vehicle during operation, you may need to change your transfer case fluid. Neglecting this problem can lead to transmission or transfer case damage, so it's best to change the fluid as soon as you notice a problem. Your owner's manual or service manual may also specify the service interval and fluid specifications to ensure the longest transfer case life. When you're ready to change or replace the fluid in your transfer case, O'Reilly Auto Parts carries the right types of transfer case fluid for most vehicles and the parts and tools required to complete any transfer case repair.
