Pga tour announces 2016-17 schedule; several changes ahead, share this article.

The PGA Tour released its 2016-17 season schedule on Monday, announcing a series of changes for next year’s series of events.

The majority of 47 tournaments in 2016-17 remain in their usual spots on the calendar, find themselves in the same host locations and hold the same title sponsor.

But some will see alterations.

The Safeway Open (formerly the Frys.com Open), the Genesis Open (formerly the Northern Trust Open), the Grupo Salinas-sponsored WGC-Mexico Championship (formerly the WGC-Cadillac Championship) and the Northern Trust (formerly the Barclays) all have new title sponsorships.

The WGC-Mexico Championship will move from Trump National Doral to an unspecified site in Mexico City. The Wells Fargo Championship will make a one-time move from Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. to Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C., as Quail Hollow prepares to host the 2017 PGA Championship. The U.S. Open will be held at Erin Hills in Hartford, Wis., and the British Open will find its way to Royal Birkdale Golf Club in England.

Other site changes include the Northern Trust’s move from Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y., to  Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury, N.Y., the BMW Championship going to  Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill., and the Quicken Loans National being held at the TPC Potomac (Md.) at Avenel Farm.

Several events will revert back to their usual dates in 2016-17 after being re-ordered in 2015-16 to accommodate for golf’s inclusion in the Olympics.

The PGA Championship will move back two weeks to Aug. 10-13. The others: the Travelers Championship (from the first week of August to June 22-25), the John Deere Classic (from the second week of August to July 13-16), and both the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and Barracuda Championship (from the first week of July to August 3-6).

The fall series of events has changed slightly. The CIMB Classic, WGC-HSBC Champions and the Sanderson Farms Championship are all slightly earlier, while the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open has moved back a bit on the calendar.

The season's final major is here -- a few weeks earlier than normal.

Scheduling and travel concerns due to the cramped Olympic-year schedule aside, the 98th edition of the PGA Championship should be a big-time show for fans. The tournament will boast the  strongest field of any golf tournament in 30 years on a lengthy, par-70 layout that should set up well for some of the game's biggest names and biggest hitters -- like Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, and Dustin Johnson. Jordan Spieth is rounding back into form. Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson just gave golf the best Sunday duel ever at the last major. The last three major champions have been first-time winners all within the World Top 12 -- could the hard-luck Sergio Garcia be next? He hasn't finished outside the top five in a tournament since May. Baltusrol seems ripe for a superstar to take home the title.

But you can't take home the Wanamaker on the first day of the event. Here's what to watch for as things get underway Thursday in Jersey on TNT.

Stars could lead before the TV coverage starts.

Who should you keep an eye on early on Thursday morning if you're following online at PGA.com with the featured groups? One of those groups will assuredly be the pairing of three of the game's biggest stars -- Jason Day, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson. Day and Rory have taken home the last two PGA titles, and are the type of long hitters who are strong off the tee and could do well on Baltusrol's long par-4s.

But both have concerns heading into this week. Day saw the golf course for the first time ever just yesterday.  And while advanced numbers say Rory's still been fantastic this year , he's struggled with having the single round that knocks him out of contention. He'll want to avoid that on Thursday, obviously. Mickelson will come to New Jersey off one of the best major performances of his life -- that he lost. It'll be interesting to see if he has any hangover from the loss to Stenson, at the course where he won the PGA the last time it was here in 2005.

You'll get lots of Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, and Sergio Garcia on your TV.

The headline group for the afternoon will feature one heckuva mix of personalities all coming into the tournament on different terms. Spieth and Watson have struggled in major championships throughout the summer, while Sergio has turned in two top fives. All three are some of the games more, uh, fickle personalities -- so watching them trudge through Baltusrol together could make for quality TV. There will also be that traditional trio of the season's first three major winners -- DJ, Willett, and Stenson -- going at 1:45 p.m ET.

Here's the full broadcast schedule for Thursday. Ernie Johnson and Ian Baker-Finch will be on the call for TNT.

Five things to know: ISPS HANDA - CHAMPIONSHIP

The DP World Tour visits a new course this week in Japan as the ISPS HANDA - CHAMPIONSHIP marks the penultimate regular event of the Asian Swing.

No10

All to play for as Asian Swing continues

The  ISPS HANDA – CHAMPIONSHIP  returns for its second edition in Japan this week, marking the penultimate event in the Asian Swing.

As with the four other Global Swings, the Asian Swing will have its own champion who will earn $200,000 from an overall $1million bonus pool.

Swing champions will also qualify for each of the  Back 9  events, where players will play for increased Race to Dubai ranking points.

The leading DP World Tour member (not otherwise exempt) will also qualify for the  Genesis Scottish Open , the second of five Rolex Series events this season.

But in an another exciting reward for DP World Tour members, those who finish in positions one to three in the final Asian Swing standings (at the conclusion of the Volvo China Open) will be exempt into the  U.S. PGA Championship  at Valhalla Golf Club from May 16-19.

As it stands, Keita Nakajima, Jesper Svensson and Kiradech Aphibarnrat sit in the top three positions on the rankings, but with a tight leaderboard, anyone down to T-58 can go top with a win in Japan.

Mount Fiji provides backdrop to new venue on the DP World Tour

With views of Mount Fuji offering a spectacular backdrop to this year's tournament, Taiheiyo Club Gotemba Course will play host on the DP World Tour for the first time this week, following on from last year's event at PGM Ishioka GC.

The par 70 layout, which plays at 7262 yards and is described by the club as a 'true hillside course', was designed in 1977 by Shunsuke Kato and is the flagship layout of Taineiyo Club's 18 courses. Situated 100km southwest of Tokyo, the course underwent a renovation in 2018 overseen by Rees Jones with consultation from Major Champion Hideki Matsuyama.

No stranger to elite competitions, the course has staged the Taiheiyo Masters on the Japan Golf Tour every year since its opening in 1977. It has also played host to the 2001 World Cup of Golf, won by South African duo Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, and will also stage this year's Asia Pacific Amateur Championship in October.

Japanese stars in action

A host of players will be hoping to become the latest Japanese stars to make their mark after a record-breaking six months that has seen three champions crowned on the DP World Tour.

Keita Nakajima became the latest name to break through at the Hero Indian Open at the end of March, just 49 days after compatriot Rikuya Hoshino earned his own maiden title at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters. Last season, Ryo Hisatsune became just the third player in history - following Hideki Matsuyama (2021 Masters) and Isao Aoki (1983 Panasonic European Open) to lift a DP World Tour title at the 2023 Cazoo Open de France.

With the event co-sanctioned with the Japan Golf Tour, Nakajima is joined in the field this week by 45 other players hoping to impress the home fans at a venue that is very well-known to them. Those include the likes of Takumi Kanaya, Kazuki Higa, Masahiro Kawamura, Ryo Ishikawa (a three-time champion on this course) and Hideto Tanihara (a two-time winner on this course)- who all have several previous top ten finishes in DP World Tour events.

ISPS HANDA continues support of golf

ISPS HANDA was founded by the Japanese philanthropist, Dr Haruhisa Handa, in 2006 in the belief that sport has the power to inspire, transform, and unite people and communities across social, racial and socio-economic barriers.

The DP World Tour and ISPS HANDA have collaborated on several events during a long-standing relationship, in turn raising the profile of golf as an accessible sport for all.

This was seen recently with ISPS HANDA backing the Australian All Abilities Championship – an event that features on the European Tour group’s G4D Tour schedule – at the end of last year.

Previous events ISPS HANDA has supported on the DP World Tour include the ISPS HANDA Wales Open (2012-14 and 2020), ISPS HANDA Perth International (2012-14 and 2016), ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf (2013, 2016, 2018), (ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth (2017-19), ISPA HANDA Vic Open (2019-20), ISPS HANDA UK Championship (2020), ISPS HANDA World Invitational presented by Modest! Golf Management (2021), ISPS HANDA Championship in Spain (2022) and ISPS HANDA World Invitational presented by AVIV Clinics (2019, 21-23).

Inside the field

Matthieu Pavon is the top-ranked player in the field this week, having reached a career-high in the Official World Golf Ranking with a tie for 12th on his Masters debut earlier this month.

The French star, who won his first PGA TOUR title earlier this year, is joined in action by fellow ISPS HANDA ambassadors Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who are also fellow winners on the DP World Tour.

Jesper Svensson, who like Nakajima has won his first DP World Tour title during the Asian Swing, is aiming to strengthen his bid for a first Major start at next month’s U.S. PGA Championship, while Matteo Manassero and Jordan Gumberg are this season’s other winners teeing it up.

New Zealand’s Kazuma Kobori, who has guaranteed DP World Tour status for next season by finishing top of the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit, is another rising star to watch out for.

Former DP World Tour winners Renato Paratore and Tom Lewis are among the Qualifying School graduates looking to make an impression, while could we see a third Challenge Tour graduate from the class of 2023 win this season after Matteo Manassero and Jesper Svensson?

The Five: Stories behind top new teams at Zurich Classic of New Orleans

Need to Know

Change Text Size

Team golf returns to the PGA TOUR spotlight with the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where the intrigue starts with how and why the teams were formed. Some seem obvious, others not so much.

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay – Presidents Cup/Ryder Cup mainstays who won here in 2022 – are running it back, as are defending champions Nick Hardy and Davis Riley. Luke Donald and Edoardo Molinari, captain and vice-captain, respectively, for Europe’s Ryder Cup triumph in Rome, also return.

That said, it’s the duos who will be making their Zurich Classic debuts that could define this tournament. The Five this week explores those new teams, but before we start, here’s a quick reminder of the format:

Each two-man team will play Four-ball (best ball) on Thursday and Foursomes (alternate shot) on Friday. After the cut – 33 teams and ties – they will play Four-ball on Saturday and Foursomes on Sunday.

Now, let’s talk teams.

1. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry

The Irish are headed to New Orleans on something of a whim. As the story goes, McIlroy asked Lowry to play the event during a drunken lunch after the Ryder Cup. “I said after, ‘You wanna play the Zurich together?’” McIlroy told GOLF.com. “And we were like, 'Yeah, let’s do it.'”

Several players seemed to hit a wall in the final round of the RBC Heritage, post-Masters fatigue finally catching up to them, and McIlroy (74, T33) and Lowry (75, T64) were among those who seemed to run out of gas. But if the teams at the Zurich Classic are only as strong as they are close, watch out for these two.

McIlroy, 34, and Lowry, 36, go back a long way. They represented Ireland at the 2007 European Amateur Team Championships. McIlroy turned pro later that year, with Lowry two years behind him, and they’ve remained close since – they were teammates again at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome.

“To see what he does with his time and his game and how he improves day to day… I’m very fortunate to have, in my eyes, one of the greatest players to play the game so close.”

McIlroy echoed a similar sentiment in an interview with the Irish Independent last fall .

“I feel over the last couple of years that Shane's been one of my biggest advocates,” he said. “He's a great person to be around, and a really good influence on me. There's parts of (Lowry) that I really love; I see how he lives his life; I see how he is with his girls, and the relationships he has with the people from home that are still close to him. He enjoys his life and everything he's worked for, and I think spending time with him makes me a better version of myself.”

Maybe that will add up to a victory in NOLA.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry's best highlights from 2024

2. Sahith Theegala and Will Zalatoris

It’s a tandem that makes all the sense in the world, statistically. Zalatoris is one of the best tee-to-green players on the PGA TOUR, while Theegala holds that distinction for his short game. They’re hot, too – Theegala just finished second at the RBC Heritage. (Zalatoris struggled in the final round to finish T44.)

They’ve known each other since their junior golf days back in California. Theegala grew up in Chino Hills, Zalatoris in the Bay Area. Although Zalatoris would move to Dallas, Texas, for his high school years, they continued to run into each other in amateur golf circles.

“I’ve known (Theegala) since I was 12 years old, gone up the ranks together,” Zalatoris said. “Just such a good dude. If anything, I was just hoping he already didn’t have a better offer.”

The pairing made sense in other ways, too, as Theegala’s caddie, Carl Smith, and Zalatoris’ caddie, Joel Stock, stay together on the road. Theegala and Zalatoris, who play practice rounds together and are represented by the same management group, talked about it casually at first, and Zalatoris wasn’t sure he could fit it into his schedule with the Dallas-hosted CJ CUP Byron Nelson the following week. Playing this week in New Orleans would mean six straight weeks of golf through the PGA Championship.

“Then finally I realized, we would have a really good chance of winning,” Zalatoris said. “It’s such a fun week and it was just A plus B equals C. I’m looking forward to it.”

3. Nicolai and Rasmus Højgaard

This one doesn’t need much explanation, right? It would be weird if this weren’t a pairing.

It will be a special week for the Højgaard twins, only one of whom (Nicolai) earned his PGA TOUR status last year. Rasmus finished just outside the top 10 of the DP World Tour Eligibility Ranking.

Rasmus Højgaard on his goal to earn PGA TOUR card

The two will be reunited for the week in New Orleans, which could be a precursor for what’s to come. Rasmus is playing well again on the DP World Tour and is projected to finish inside the top 10 to earn PGA TOUR status for 2025. Nicolai contended at the Masters Tournament (T16).

They won’t be the only tandem with family ties, nor the only twins (Parker and Pierceson Coody).

4. Joel Dahmen and Keith Mitchell

Early clubhouse leader for best vibes of the week, Joel Dahmen and Keith Mitchell’s pairing seemed so obvious that it was shocking that it had never happened before.

Better late than never. "Cashmere Keith" and "Bucket Hat Joel" are taking on New Orleans. Their friendship dates back to their time on the Korn Ferry Tour, where they overlapped in 2016 and 2017, and they’ve remained close on the PGA TOUR, where each has won once.

A solid week would be welcome for both players, as each is comfortably inside the FedExCup top 125, but neither has cracked the pivotal top 50. They may lead the field in fun.

5. Eric Cole and Russ Cochran

It's a curveball here at the end, but one that is well worth it.

Russ Cochran, 65, has been stuck on 599 career PGA TOUR starts for more than a decade. His last PGA TOUR event was the 2013 Sony Open in Hawaii (T41). It looked like that landmark 600th start would never come. Cochran accepted that, but then Cole came calling.

Here’s the backstory: Cole’s caddie is Reed Cochran, Russ’s son, and Cole plays with both father and son back in Tequesta, Florida, a suburb of Jupiter. Cole floated the idea to Russ, who was apprehensive at first. Eventually, Cole wore him down.

“I thought it would be pretty cool to get him his 600th,” said Cole, who finished T33 at the RBC Heritage. “Russ was kinda shaky about it, and then I stayed on him pretty hard and he eventually he came around. He’s been getting ready for it.”

Reed will stay on Cole’s bag, while Russ’s other son, Ryan, will caddie for his dad. Russ played last week’s PGA TOUR Champions event, shooting 73-77 to finish T75 but at least knock some of the rust off at the rain-shortened Invited Celebrity Classic.

Cochran’s first PGA TOUR start came 43 years ago, and the 1991 Centel Western is his lone PGA TOUR win. He has five PGA TOUR Champions victories.

“It’s a cool family week, and in New Orleans it will be a cool celebration of Russ,” Cole said.

Who is the new ‘kid’ on the Korn Ferry Tour? We found out

Miles Russell tips his cap on the 18th green during the final round of the LECOM Suncoast Classic on Sunday in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.

ARLINGTON, Texas – Miles Russell, the 15-year-old golf whiz kid, made headlines on the Korn Ferry Tour last week — the youngest player ever to make a 36-hole cut and record a top-20 finish — but when he arrived at the Veritex Bank Championship Korn Ferry event this week, he was undone by the twin challenges of securing a rental car and locking up a housing arrangement.

“It’s good he needs me for that; they certainly don’t need me for golf,” joked his dad, Joe Russell, a Florida senior living developer, who is here this week along with caddie and longtime instructor Ramon Bescansa.

Of course, dad picked up the check for a Tuesday night dinner at a local Pappadeaux, but other than that, he was resigned to applying sunshine on the range while his son and Bescansa honed their craft next to other players, some more than twice the teen’s age.

Miles Russell, a high school freshman, finished T20 at the LECOM Suncoast Classic last week, and the top-25 finish qualified him for this week, his second Korn Ferry Tour event. He tees off at 2:43 p.m. local. A surprise? Maybe. But Russell’s list of accomplishments are longer than his slightly built 5-foot-7 frame.

The AJGA’s top-ranked junior, he broke Tiger Woods’ record as the youngest player ever to win AJGA Player of the Year and was the youngest ever to win the Junior Players Championship. He captured the Junior PGA Championship by seven shots, played in the Junior Ryder Cup and was named to the first USGA Junior National team. And don’t forget his 17 Florida Junior Golf Tournament wins and upcoming PGA Tour exemption for the fall Bermuda tournament.

Although there’s still room for improvement — at least in some areas.

“I got to get better (with autographs),” he said. “I’ve got to get a lot faster.”

With his bulky TaylorMade staff bag (with his name on it) an NIL deal and promising future, he seems like the typical modern junior golfer, although he’s old school in the fact that he refuses to wear ear buds when he warms up.

“I prefer to hear the sound of the ball coming off the club,” he said.

Both his PGA Tournament mentor, Steve Wheatcroft, who was a member at Russell’s home course, Atlantic Beach Country Club, and Bescansa, have emphasized that no matter how bright his future is, there will be struggles along the way. Wheatcroft also taught him something that could come in handy down the road — the art of trash talk and money games.

“Weathie!” Russell said, when thinking about their sessions together. “He took some money from me and then it turned around and I took some from him.”

Added Atlantic Beach head golf pro Richard Podwalski: “Steve would dog him and trash him and make him tougher. That was his job and he did it well.”

Around Atlantic Beach, Russell’s already made a name for himself.

There was the albatross on the par-5 6th hole last summer, where he holed a 5-wood from 239 yards, only the second in recent club history. (“He was too young to buy drinks after that, so we gave him a piece of framed artwork,” Podwalski said.) He’s already shot 29 multiple times on the front nine of the par-72 course; his low is 62, and Podwalski says 59 isn’t unrealistic. And of course, they’re still talking about his shot during the annual Black Friday shootout last November.

Russell put his tee ball on the 9th directly behind a tree in the right rough, just six inches from the tree roots. No matter. He opened a 3-iron, sent the ball skyward around the tree, curved it and landed it right next to the green. The gallery was stunned; Tour players Doc Redman and Vince Covello shook their heads in amazement.

“I’ve been playing tournament golf for 30 years,” Covello said, “and that’s the greatest shot I’ve ever seen.”

It’s not uncommon to see Russell practicing alone in a bunker for hours or chipping off the cart path. Joe Russell quit playing against his son long ago, but his final match was a memorable one.

“It was the year Tiger and Phil played in The Match on TV, and we decided to have our own match as well,” he said. “He went back to the back tees (at age 11) and he beat me by 10 shots. I said that’s it, I’m done.”

Russell has even learned how to turn a rare disappointment into a positive. In 2016, he shot a six-under 30 in a U.S. Kids regional event, only to lose by a single shot to good friend Graden Lomax, who shot 29. But instead of getting bitter and losing a friendship, he got better, forming the Florida Sunshine Cup with Lomax, where elite junior players come together for a day of fundraising for local charities, including the Nicklaus Family Children’s Hospital, which has raised $300,00 in the last five years.

“It started as a dream, but it has turned out great,” Joe Russell said.

A lot like his first Korn Ferry Tour start.
