Ultimate Guide To Disney Cruise Child Care and Kids Clubs

By Lisa Gilmore Leave a Comment

Ah, you’ve booked a cruise. You’re thinking of relaxing poolside, tasty beverages adorned with little umbrellas, exotic destinations, and child care.

disney fantasy cruise child care

The Disney Wish

Wait, what? Child care? Why would child care thoughts pop up in a cruise daydream?  Well, when you’re booking a Disney Cruise, why  wouldn’t world-class child care be one of your top vacation fantasies?

The name and brand of Disney has proven itself time and time again when it comes to family-friendly entertainment and family-friendly vacations, and on a Disney Cruise , these two concepts merge into a synergetic force, giving your family a vacation tailor-made for each individual as well as your whole family unit.

Mickey and Minnie on the Disney Wish!

That’s a big brag. Ok, let’s back it up by looking at the child care and kid’s clubs aboard the Disney Cruise Line ships to see what all they offer, and why your kids may never want to leave these custom-designed areas on the ships!

The Disney Cruise Line  fleet is comprised of  five world-class ships : the  Disney Magic , the  Disney Wonder , the  Disney Dream , the  Disney Fantasy,  and the newest ship in the fleet: the  Disney Wish .   The fleet will be joined by the  Disney Treasure in 2024, and Disney Cruise Line has also   recently purchased the Global Dream cruise ship .  Each ship has a classic cruise line theme from the glory days of those turn of the (20th) century transatlantic luxury cruiseliners, but with modern twists and amenities.

All of the cruise ships provide youth and teen clubs to keep the kids entertained during the cruise. There’s even a nursery for those wee ones (for an extra fee). Each youth club is tailored to a different age range and includes different entertainment elements. And each ship has its own unique take on each space.

Yes, there’s even a spot for your baby! So, if you’re looking to book a massage or enjoy a nice dinner with your partner, or even take a nap (because we know you’d love an undisturbed 3-hour nap), you can take your tyke to the nursery.

Once you get that spot secured, you can rest assured that your little one will have a fun, safe, and Disney-riffic time. This nursery spot is different than the kids clubs for the older children, there is a per-hour charge with a minimum of 1 hour. For additional children in the same family, the charge is a little less per hour for an additional child. And cancellation fees do apply if you cancel your arrangements without at least 4 hours notice.

There are two main rooms in the nursery. An activity room filled with perfect items for tiny hands, like horns to honk, wheels to spin, and buttons to push. The second room has the lights turned down for a calm setting, perfect for naptime.

The reservations are set for a capacity of four infants (those not yet walking) and 16 toddlers, depending on the number of counselors on hand. Parents are required to provide their own diapers, baby wipes, extra clothing/pajamas, pre-made bottles of milk/formula, baby food in jars, sippy cups, and security items such as blankets, pacifiers, or a favorite toy, and everything should be labeled with the child’s name — just like any daycare or child care facility at home. The nursery counselors use the chat feature in the DCL app to communicate any needs or situations to parents.

To book your child’s time in the nursery, you’ll want to make a reservation as soon as you can, since space is so limited. Depending on your Stateroom or your Castaway Club status, you can start booking his option between 75-120 days out. Or, check on Embarkation Day for any availability. Daily operating hours may vary, so check the Disney Cruise Line Navigator mobile app while on board the ship.

Disney’s Oceaneer Club (Ages 3 to 12):

When kids are checked into the Oceaneer Club, they enter a common hub area and other themed activity rooms split off from this main room.  A stage in the main area provides a platform for kids to express their creativity and storytelling, and is the centerpiece of the Club when Disney characters stop by to visit! There are large-screen TV showing movies that may feature a surprise Disney character interaction from time to time!

In the different rooms that split off from the main hub, kids can play in Andy’s Room (Wonder, Magic, Fantasy, Dream), Star Wars: Command Post (Fantasy), Marvel Superhero Academy (Wish, Wonder, Magic, Fantasy ), Pixie Hollow (Magic, Fantasy, Dream), Disney Infinity Game Room (Dream),  Star Wars: Millennium Falcon (Dream), Disney Junior (Wonder, Magic), Frozen Adventures (Wonder), Fairytale Hall (Wish), Walt Disney Imagineering Lab (Wish), Mickey & Minnie’s Captain’s Deck (Wish), or Star Wars: Cargo Bay  (Wish).

Disney’s Oceaneer Lab (Ages 3 to 12):

Is another spot for when your young crew is feeling creative. Your junior Imagineers can create in Animator’s Studio (Dream, Fantasy, Magic), Craft Studio (Dream, Fantasy, Magic), Media Room (Dream, Fantasy, Wonder), Playmation (Dream), The Wheelhouse (Dream, Fantasy), Sound Studio (Fantasy), Captain’s Workshop (Magic), Navigation Game Station (Magic), Marvel Avenger Academy  (Wonder),  Andy’s Room  (Wonder), Frozen Adventures (Wonder).

The Disney Wish includes an Imagineering Lab for kids!

The Club and Lab are connected with a secure, kids-only hallway, so children can go between the two areas freely. Be sure to pre-register your kids (through the Disney Cruise Line website) for access to these kids clubs before your cruise, so they can be that much closer to experiencing these fun spaces!

Edge (Ages 11-14)

Tweens have their own space aboard Disney ships. Located in different nooks and secret spots around the ships, these tween clubs provide kids with a chance to hang out with others their age, play games, have dance or karaoke parties, and engage in counselor-led activities, or just hang out and play video games. Their own little mini vacation within a vacation.

disney fantasy cruise child care

This tweens-only space is open from 9AM – midnight daily. Disney GETS how much the kids love technology and there is no shortage of it here! Tweens can play video games, sing karaoke, watch TV, and use the computer lab. The space is filled with couches for hanging out, arts and crafts tables, and flat-screen TVs. Counselors will keep the kids busy until midnight with activities, so you may never see your kid the whole cruise long!

Vibe (Ages 14-17)

While designated as a teens-only hangout, Vibe is chaperoned by some of the coolest counselors at sea, in a laid-back way that allows teens to feel as unrestricted and comfortable as they can possibly be.

disney fantasy cruise child care

This is a club built with teens in mind, where technology and social media reign supreme. Giant screens (complete with surround sound) for watching their favorite films or even concerts, plus so many fantastic selfie backgrounds!

“Bar” area

And it wouldn’t be a full club if it didn’t have refreshments like the adult night-clubs do (just non-alcoholic versions, like soda, coffee, and smoothies).

If you’re cruising on the Dream or Fantasy, Vibe extends to a private deck area outside! Poolside deck chairs and loungers offer sunbathing, and access to two wading pools, fountains, jets, and misters. Competitive teens can try their hands at ping pong and foosball.

Additional Spaces

You could argue that the whole ship offers something for everyone, but there are even more spaces beyond just designated kids clubs that are tailored for each unique demographic.

On the Disney Wish , tweens and teens can enjoy Hideaway , a unique “third teen/tween space” adjacent to Vibe. It’s a sort of flex space that can be opened to the teen club or closed off for tween-only events.

disney fantasy cruise child care

There is also  Hero Zone   on the Disney Wish, which isn’t kid-exclusive (it’s a great event space for the whole family), but it is conveniently close to the Vibe, which is a not-so-mini indoor sports hub. Kids can challenge each other in friendly competition with basketball, soccer, and a variety of table-top games, including Ping-Pong, air hockey, foosball, and shuffleboard.

Chill Spa for Teens is located inside Senses Spa onboard the Disney Dream, Fantasy, and Magic , exclusive for cruisers ages 13 – 17.  This spa-within-a-spa has a unique space with treatment rooms, showers, and a separate seating area just for the teen clientele. There is also a menu of services tailor-made for their relaxation and pampering needs, including facials, massages, body treatments, manicures, and pedicures.

The Chill Spa does cost extra, so make sure your kiddos save up their allowances for this treatment!

Adults who want to stop by these locations just to get a peek at what the fun is all about can stop by during open house days/hours.  The kids clubs on Disney Cruise Line are pretty amazing, so you’ll want to stop by those open houses, even if you’re just a big kid at heart.

If you're planning a Disney Cruise with babies and toddlers, you'll want to make sure you have all the information you need to make the most of the onboard nursery. It's a Small World Nursery is the Disney Cruise Nursery, and my definitive guide has everything you need to know about this magical space for the little ones in your party. From hours of operation to age restrictions to tips from this sleepy dad, I've got you covered. Then you can have some much-needed adult time, go to a show or Palo, or maybe just take a long nap. For a more general guide to infants on Disney Cruises, check this post out .

If you have one or more of these, you’ll want to know about it’s a small world nursery

Overview of it’s a small world nursery

Hours of operation: varies daily and by ship, opens as early as 8am and closes as late at 12 am. (they will open earlier if you have an excursion that begins before 8am).

it’s a small world nursery (intentionally lowercase) is the onboard childcare facility for infants and toddlers on Disney Cruise Line ships. The nursery is staffed by trained childcare professionals who provide a safe and fun environment for children to play and learn while parents enjoy some time to themselves. So far for us, each ship has had at least one cast member from the UK, giving us the added comfort of pretending she is a Gen Z Mary Poppins.

On the first day of the cruise, the nursery hosts an open house where parents can enter into the area to play WITH their child. My wife loves this option because it helps the babies get used to the environment while in the comfort of their parent’s presence. Then, the baby recognizes the environment and is excited to continue exploring at drop off. We use the nursery every day we are on the ship because it provides open space and developmentally appropriate toys for our son. It’s tough to explore the small staterooms, and our toy options are usually limited. Plus, the shows may be too loud or overstimulating, and dinner can be downright boring.

disney fantasy cruise child care

The dining staff was accomodating, but he’d probably be more comfortable in a crib in the dimly lit nursery.

On the 4 original Disney Cruise ships (Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, Disney Magic, and Disney Wonder), the nursery’s theme is inspired (obviously) by the It’s a Small World ride at the Disney Parks. It has three distinct areas: an acclimation area (to get babies adjusted to the new environment), a play area, and a napping area. The play area has a 3D façade based on the Small World ride with interactive surprises for the kids. For the sanity of the cast members, the song is not on repeat.

it's a small world nursery

On the new Disney Wish, the small world theming is maintained but supplemented by stylized versions of Marvel, Disney, and Pixar characters inspired by animator Mary Blair. The nursery is located on deck 5 for the original ships. On the Disney Wish, all of the youth activities areas have been moved to Deck 2 to improve traffic flow.

As I mentioned, the name is always lowercase. I guess that’s to attract shorter cruise guests. it’s a small world! nursery also uses an exclamation point right in the middle of the word, but that would look ridiculous, and I would feel like I was yelling at you at random intervals, so I’ll stick to not punctuating it. They named it that way because the rides at Disneyland and Disney World have the exclamation point! (See it’s weird if I start punctuating it like that!)

Age, Cost, and other Preliminaries

The it's a small world nursery is available for children ages 6 months to 3 years old (or one year on some longer cruises, which is also the minimum age for babies on the respective itineraries). unlike the youth activities, the it’s a small world nursery does come with an additional cost., the cost is: ·  $9 per hour for the first child ·  $8 per hour for each additional child in the same family..

If you need to cancel a reservation, do so 4 hours in advance for no charge. If you no-show for a reservation, you’ll be charged full price. If you cancel within 4 hours, you’ll be charged half price. However, we missed a couple of reservations, and I don’t think they charged us. The rate is so cheap compared to everything else on the boat, that we may not have noticed.

Additionally, children must have no signs of illness to be admitted to the nursery. If your child becomes ill or otherwise inconsolable, the cast members will contact you via the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App, so you’ll need to keep your phone with you. Then, you’ll have to be cleared by the medical team before your baby can return. This happened when our little guy had a “protein spill,” luckily for us, it was just an inordinate amount of spit up, no fever, and he was cleared to return later that day.

The nursery cast members will also use the app to notify you of when your nursery reservation is upcoming and when it is about to end.

The it’s a small world nursery is welcoming of children with special needs, but they are not specifically trained for special needs care and cannot provide a one-to-one ratio.

A baby wearing a onesie that looks like it has a bowtie, sunglasses, and watch. Toddler on a Disney Cruise.

Reservations for it’s a small world are recommended and can be made online through the app (before your cruise) or onboard the ship (in person or by stateroom phone).

To ensure you get the most out of your Disney Cruise with infants and toddlers, it's important to make reservations for the it's a small world nursery prior to your cruise. Reservations can be made online or onboard the ship, but it's recommended to book as early as possible to secure your preferred times.

Here’s the earliest you can book before your cruise, based on your Castaway Club or Concierge level:

Up to 130 days ahead for concierge and pearl castaway club guests, up to 120 days ahead for platinum castaway club guests, up to 105 days ahead for gold castaway club guests, up to 90 days ahead for silver castaway club guests, up to 75 days ahead for all other guests.

You’re currently allowed to book up to 10 hours prior to boarding. IMPORTANT: This DOES NOT MEAN you only get 10 hours during your cruise. The rest of your booking (as many hours as you want) can be done once you board the ship. Therefore, IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT to go directly to it’s a small world once you board the boat to secure the rest of the nursery times you want . On most cruises, reservations will fill up, especially for days at sea.

Pro Second Dad to the Right Tip : Have a plan beforehand of what you want, so that you can rush through the booking process both beforehand and once onboard. Again, GO DIRECTLY THERE when you get onboard, or else the other parents will take all the good spots. Get more reservations than you think you’ll need. You can always cancel them later.

Another Tip: If you’re comfortable with it, you can leave your child on the ship when you’re in port. If you have a booked excursion, you get a guaranteed reservation for the nursery even if it’s full. You can also leave your child at the nursery during Castaway Cay, but there is no guaranteed reservation. However, if you leave the boat, you must have your phone connected to a network to receive calls, in case of emergency. It will be a real phone call, not through the app, if you are off of the ship.

dunn river falls excursion disney cruise

We found it significantly easier and safer to climb the Dunn River Falls without an infant

Final Pro Tip: If you discover an adult activity you want to participate in that you didn’t schedule for, drop by the nursery. If they aren’t full or closed, they’ll take your cute bundle of perfection so that you can go play Star Wars Trivia.

What to Expect During Drop-off and Pick-Up

When dropping off your child at the it's a small world nursery, you will need to provide their MagicBand (which the staff will give you) to check them in. You will also need to provide any necessary items such as diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes. The nursery staff will use the Disney Cruise Navigator App if they need to contact you during your child's stay. Finally, you will need to fill out detailed instructions on feeding times, snack choices, and everything you brought with you. This is tedious (but understandable), so make sure you give yourself a couple of minutes before your scheduled activity.

disney fantasy cruise child care

Our buddy playing at it’s a small world nursery. He colored his eyebrows for April Fools.

Another note about drop off: The smaller ships (Wonder and Magic) have limited room for you to leave your stroller. Aboard the Magic last month, they originally wouldn’t let us leave our strollers, but then changed their minds later in the week. If your particular sailing doesn’t allow strollers, it’s probably easier to carry your child to the nursery than walk your stroller back to your stateroom after drop off.

When picking up your child, you will need to present your Key to the World card and sign them out. Only guests you authorize can pick up your child. The nursery staff will provide you with a report of your child's activities and any important information you need to know.

Pro Tip: DO NOT forget to return the Magic Band to the nursery at the end of your cruise. It will refund you the $20 they charged you at the beginning of the trip. The Magic Band is cool, but it won’t work in the parks, so it’s not worth it.

Activities and amenities offered in the nursery

The it's a small world nursery on Disney Cruise Line offers a variety of activities and amenities to keep your little ones happy. Most of the activities are unscheduled and based on your child’s inclinations and mood. These activities and amenities include age-appropriate toys and games, activities such as crafts, movies, scheduled feeding, and napping (at your request or the baby’s request). The nursery also hosts special events such as story time and character visits. My little dude was apparently not a fan of Mickey. Mickey is usually his favorite, so I can only assume it’s because he was hoping the special guest was me.

Our little guy has already sailed twice for a total of 12 nights, and we have been blown away by how awesome the staff is. They are professional and careful, focused on safety within the room as well as during pick up. They are also amazingly friendly and engaged with the babies. If you ride the Disney Fantasy, say hello to Gabby for us. She was amazing. They were quick to contact us if we were needed, as well as helpful to remind us of our scheduled times. Most importantly, our son absolutely loved it there.

I hope your baby loves it there, too. And I hope these tips and guidelines make the process faster and less stressful for you, so that you can spend more time at that Silent DJ party.

Disney Fantasy – It’s a Small World Nursery & Baby Club

Disney Fantasy It's a Small World Nursery & Baby Club

Disney Fantasy It’s a Small World Nursery… You’ll want it to be a small world after all 🙂

One of the facilities I was most interested to check out on our Disney Fantasy cruise , was the It’s a Small World Nursery . Not every family resort or cruise offers infant and baby care , but if they do it’s usually pretty good. Disney Cruise Line ‘s Disney Fantasy was no exception.

It’s not free, like at Beaches Turks & Caicos , but it’s not a full day rate like at Club Med . In fact, the pay-as-you-go rate of $9.00 US per hour is incredibly reasonable. Bub couldn’t wait to go!

disney fantasy it's a small world nursery baby club lobby

The Right Age & Stage

Since he was just shy of his third birthday, I was a little worried that he would find the area a little too babyish. Not the case! He really seemed to enjoy the smaller scale of Small World. When his dad went to pick him up after an hour, he didn’t want to leave…

A good sign, I think!

We let him stay for another hour 😉

It’s a Small World Nursery’s Policies & Procedures:

I spoke with Manda, one of the lovely staff members, about the policies that It’s a Small World Nursery follows. For infants aged 14mos. and younger, the ratio of staff to babies is 1-4. For older babies aged 14mos. and up, the ratio is 1-6. There is usually a staff of 8 standing by, but they can always call someone in if things get busy.

On the Disney Dream , the maximum number of babies they could manage was 28. Manda anticipated the same for the Disney Fantasy . Reservations are recommended, but they take walk-ins as capacity allows.

Procedures & Pricing

As with the Oceaneer Club and Lab , you pre-register your kids online. Check under “My Cruise Plans” in your online cruise profile for the option for registering. Wristbands are not given for the little ones.

The It’s a Small World Nursery is open from 9am to 11pm. Sometimes it opens as early as 7am. They offer open house time during the first two at-sea days.

The fee is $4.50 US for 30 minutes or $9/hour for your first child. Then, it is $4 for 30 minutes or $8/hour for every additional child. Notify them at least 4 hours in advance if you need to cancel or you will be charged the the full amount of your reservation.

disney fantasy it's a small world nursery nap area

Dropping Off…

When dropping off your baby, you leave their food and/or bottles, diapers and wipes, and napping instructions. If your little is not exactly thrilled with being left, the staff will comfort and distract. Manda advised that most usually calm down within a few minutes. However, they page parents for further instructions if the baby cannot be comforted after 15 minutes. If your little cannot be comforted after 30 minutes, the staff will page you to come pick them up.

Illness or Injury

If your baby or toddler falls down and goes boom while in the Disney Fantasy It’s a Small World Nursery , staff will administer ice packs and/or band-aids, and call you straight away. Usually the children are fine to stay but the staff leaves that decision to your discretion.

If a “protein spill” happens (Disney-speak for vomit!) they will call to come pick up your child right away. They can return to the nursery once you’ve received clearance from the medical team. They need to determine if the “protein spill” was a one-time upset stomach, or a virus that could affect the staff and other attendees of the nursery.

disney fantasy it's a small world nursery baby club

How much does It’s a Small World Nursery cost?

The cost of the It’s a Small World Nursery is $9/hour. This is remarkably reasonable, I think, considering the level of care and quality of the surroundings. It’s spotless, and the various zones are so nicely decorated and soothing (and clutter-free). It makes me wish our daycares at home could maintain that level of cleanliness and tidiness.

One thing I noticed about the staff at It’s a Small World (and most of the kids’ staff, actually) is that they’re mostly Brits, Aussies, and Kiwis. I think it’s the accent (think Mary Poppins) that inspires extra confidence in the child care department.

Feeling Confident As a Parent

I wasn’t able to utilize baby and kids clubs at resorts until my firstborn was past the age of two. But that’s me and my helicopter parent tendencies, not lack of confidence in any of the facilities.B ub did great at FDR Resort and his vacation nanny in Jamaica when he was 16mos. But my mother-in-law was also there with him. And I recognize that other (most?) parents are not as hover-y as I am.

Plus, having more kids often means A) you’re more relaxed about leaving them in the care of others; and B) you’re in more need of a break! Knowing there are resorts and cruises like Disney Cruise Line that offer exemplary infant and toddler care is a real bonus for parents who just need some grown-up time.

Disney Cruise Kids Clubs – What You Need to Know Updated 2024

Sharing is caring!

If you have children and are sailing on a Disney cruise you need to know about the amazing clubs they offer for kids.

The Disney Cruise Kids Club really is an amazing facility for all ages from 6 months to age 17.

There are different spaces on all of the Disney Cruise Ships for children of all ages.

I have sailed on many Disney Cruises with kids of all ages for over a decade. And they have all had an amazing time in the kid’s clubs.

Let’s explore what is available for children in the kid’s clubs on a Disney Cruise.

Note that there have been some recent changes to the age groups for each of the kids clubs and a change of policy about flexibility so make sure you read on to see the new rules .

disneycruisekidslcub

Overview of Disney Cruise Line’s Kids Club

Did you know that Disney is one of the very few cruise lines that have a facility to care for children under the age of 3?

One of the biggest reasons why Disney Cruise Line is the top-rated cruise line for families is because of the different kids clubs that they offer on all the ships in the fleet.

Apart from the “it’s a small world” nursery!, Disney Cruise kids clubs do not require reservations and are complimentary for guests.

The Disney Cruise Line provides structured youth activities and programs to meet the needs of both children and families. They are categorized by specific age groups and offer tailored spaces for each group.

Age-Specific Kids Clubs

All youth programs are led by specially trained Disney counselors to create highly immersive and magical clubs.

They facilitate age-appropriate fun and engaging activities in all of the clubs throughout your cruise vacation. Let’s dive into a complete list of Disney Cruise kids’ clubs!

How Long Can Kids Stay at Kids Club on a Disney Cruise?

Your children can stay as long as you want them to at the Kid’s Clubs. There is no limit on the time they can spend there.

If the kid’s clubs are open and your child is happy to be there – they can be there all day if they want to. And they may very well want to.

How Does the Disney Kids Club Work on a Cruise?

There are 5 different Kids Clubs on each Disney Ship :

  • It’s A Small World Nursery 6 months to 3 years – this is the only one with a fee
  • Oceaneer Club ages 3 to 10
  • Oceaneer Lab ages 3 to 10
  • Edge ages 11 to 14
  • Vibe ages 14 to 17

Note that effective on sailings that depart on or after December 21, 2023 the age range in Disney’ Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab changes from 3 to 12 to 3 to 10. With no exceptions.

During youth activities Open House times, guests of all ages are permitted in youth activity spaces, including Disney’s Oceaneer Club, Disney’s Oceaneer Lab, Edge and Vibe.

Guests with children 11 and 12 years old no longer need to complete youth activities registration as part of Online Check-in for these children.

This change is also applicable to Scuttle’s Cove which is the kids club for the younger ones at Castaway Cay. This has also changed from 3 to 12 years of age to 3 to 10 years of age .

It’s A Small World Nursery

“ It’s a small world ” nursery! is available on all of the Disney Cruise ships for children aged from 6 months to 3 years old.

It is the only childcare center on the Disney ships which is not provided free of charge, and you have to book ahead.

Even if you don’t use the Small World Nursery for many hours on your Disney Cruise, it can be great to get a break so you can take advantage of all that a Disney Cruise has for Adults .

The cast members provide nothing short of quality care and unmatched convenience.

While the programs at “it’s a small world” nursery! will vary depending on your child’s mood, activities like story time, movie time, and arts and crafts projects will keep them smiling and engaged. The nursery consists of three distinct areas:

  • Acclimation zone designed to help your little ones adjust to their new environment
  • Main play area that features a 3D facade of the “it’s a small world” attraction that is filled with interactive wonders
  • A separate quiet room for infants and toddlers to take naps.

disneycruiseitsasmallworldnursery

It’s a Small World Nursery that charges $4.50 for each half-hour, and you must book for at least one hour. Therefore, the minimum charge is $9 for the first child.

There is a discount for children who are in the same family as they are only charged $4 per hour. So the minimum charge is $8 per hour for the second child.

Advance reservations are required and can be made online:

  • Up to 120 days ahead for Concierge and Platinum Castaway Club Guests
  • Up to 105 days ahead for Gold Castaway Club Guests
  • Up to 90 days ahead for Silver Castaway Club Guests
  • Up to 75 days ahead for all other Guests

If you don’t make reservations online you can go to the Nursery to see if there is any additional time available.

Numbers are very strictly controlled as there needs to be the correct amount of Cast Members to care for the babies and infants.

If you need to cancel a reservation make sure that you do that at least 4 hours ahead of time or you will pay for all of the sessions that you have booked.

Is Food Provided in the It’s A Small World Nursery?

Juice and crackers are available for snacks for your child.

Lunch and dinner is no longer provided as it used to be prior to the shutdown.

Milk is not provided so you need to bring your own formula and bottles. If you have baby food you can bring this as well.

What Else Will My Child Need for the Nursery on a Disney Cruise?

babiesondisneycruise

You will need to provide diapers, wipes, and pull-ups for your child if they are not potty trained.

Pack a bag that is clearly labeled for your child with extra items such as a change of clothing, a special blanket, a pacifier, or perhaps a favorite toy.

Make sure that you label items because things do sometimes get lost.

If you think that your child may be anxious or not settle well in the Nursery, it can also be a good idea to go to the open house which is held every day.

This can help your child get used to the new environment and the counselors.

Make sure that you download the Navigator’s App as the Counsellors will use this to contact you if you need to pick up your child early.

Counselors can’t give any medication to your child, but there is a trained First Aid Cast Member in the Nursery at all times.

Disney’s Oceaneer Club

disneyoceaneerclub

Children aged between 3 and 12 have a choice between the Oceaneer Club and the Oceaneer Lab. On all of the Disney ships, the Oceaneers Club and Lab are on Deck 5 mid-ship.

The Oceaneer Club is themed for Disney fantasy and imagination, while the Oceaneer Lab is about learning while having fun.

They are separate spaces but are connected by a closed corridor. Your child can move from one space to the other via this corridor. If they need help, the Counsellor will accompany them!

From character-driven performances and special story-telling sessions to larger-than-life play areas and dress-up opportunities, your kids will be delighted to step into a world inhabited by some of their favorite characters.

The Oceaneer Club-themed play spaces include:

  • Andy’s Room
  • Disney Infinity Game Room
  • Pixie Hollow
  • Star Wars: Millennium Falcon
  • Star Wars: Command Post
  • Star Wars: Cargo Bay
  • Marvel Super Hero Academy
  • Disney Junior
  • Mickey and Minnie Captain’s Deck
  • Frozen Adventures
  • Fairytale Hall.

They also provide one-of-a-kind guided group activities to add more enchantment and fantasy:

  • Disney’s Once Upon a Time
  • Puzzle Playtime with Mickey and Friends
  • Jedi Training: Experience the Force
  • Woody’s Round Up
  • Doctor Strange: Defy the Dark Dimension
  • Thor Becoming Worthy
  • Mickey and the Roadster Racers
  • Disney Royal Academy
  • Join the Lion Guard
  • Captain America’s Super Hero 101
  • Walt Disney Imagineering Lab.

Disney Oceaneer’s Lab

You will probably find that your children want to spend every possible moment in the Kids Clubs! There are lots of organized activities, but if your children want to be independent that is fine too.

You can see the daily schedule for the day on the Navigator so you can plan if your child wants to do a particular activity.

The only times that you can spend time in the Oceaneers Clubs as a parent is during Open House. Look at your Navigators for when these times are scheduled.

disney fantasy cruise child care

From highly interactive spaces and games to crazy experiments and all kinds of activities, Disney Oceaneer’s Lab is dedicated to exploration and designed just for kids. The Disney Oceaneer’s Lab-themed play spaces include:

  • Animator’s Studio
  • Craft Studio
  • The Wheelhouse
  • Captain’s Workshop.

They also provide one-of-a-kind guided group activities to add more discovery and learning:

  • Get the Hook!
  • Piston Cup Challenge
  • Anyone Can Cook
  • Super Sloppy Science with Professor Make-O-Mess
  • What Goes Up
  • Zootopia Mystery Trek
  • Stitch’s Space Goo
  • Disney Pals Pajama Party.

Disney Cruise Edge

disneywonderedge

The Edge is for those aged 11 to 14.

Note that whilst there used to be an overlap for kids aged 11 and 12 who could choose to go either to Oceaneers or Edge, this is no longer then case. There is no flexibility with the ages groups.

My children have all formed some long-lasting friendships with people who they met in Disney Cruise Edge because of how the space on each ship is designed to appeal to that age group.

There is a lot of interaction with the Disney counselors for this age group, with an emphasis on smaller groups!

Disney Cruise Edge is designed for tweens to engage in cool and engaging daily activities such as:

  • That’s Hilarious
  • Heroes and Villains
  • Crowning of the Couch Potato
  • A Pirate’s Life for Me
  • Descendant’s Den DJ Spin Off.

From karaoke to video games, puzzles, challenges, and scavenger hunts to arts and crafts, there is something to appeal to all in this Disney Cruise Kids Club age group.

That’s not to mention that Disney characters also visit the Kids Clubs at certain times!

Disney Kids Clubs Vibe

disneywondervibe

Disney Kids Club Vibe is for teens aged from 14 to 17.

To access the Vibe on the Disney Fantasy and the Dream, teenagers have to have their own key card which is specially coded.

On the Disney Magic and the Wonder, the loft-inspired space is in the forward Funnel.

The Disney Fantasy and Dream have wonderful indoor and outdoor spaces that might even make you wish you were a teenager again!

Lastly, the different spaces on the Disney Dream Class ships are perfect for teens to hang out and make friends.

Vibe is a teen-exclusive haven where your kids can chill out, watch TV, listen to music, play group games, and more with cruisers their age. It is fully equipped with multiple flat-screen TVs, video games, board games, and tablets.

From catching some rays to day-and-night dance parties, Vibe also hosts a range of daily fun-filled activities that include:

  • Teen Download
  • Vibe Movie Makers

Is There a Kids Club on Castaway Cay?

Yes, Disney has thought of everything. There is even a Kids Club on their private island Castaway Cay .

When the ship docks in Castaway Cay they can still use the Kids Clubs on board.

However, there is also a place on the island where they can be looked after by the Disney Counsellors. This is a more convenient option if you are planning to spend some of the time with the kids on Castaway Cay, as you don’t have to go back to the ship to collect them.

Scuttle’s Cove is available to any child aged 3 to 10 who is registered with the Kids Clubs.

What is there to do on Castaway Cay?

How To Register for the Disney Cruise Kids Clubs

For any of the kid’s clubs on a Disney Cruise, you do need to register your child.

The easiest way to do this is online. You will have the option to do this once you have paid in full for your cruise.

It does save some time if you do this prior to your cruise.

You can also do this at the terminal on embarkation day. The lines do tend to be quite long for this, but it can keep you occupied whilst you wait for your boarding party to be called.

theedgeondisneyfantasycruisship

You will fill out all the paperwork (it doesn’t take long). You will then get a Disney Cruise Line Youth Activities Magic Band for each child.

This has to be handed back at the end of the cruise or you will be charged.

You can keep the Magic Band as a souvenir if you want, but you will be charged $12.95.

disneykidsclubmagiband

When you get on board the ship there will be an open house.

You can tour all the kid’s clubs at this time – it is a great opportunity to see what is available.

Disney Cruise Lines has a downloadable PDF for younger cruisers so that they can know what to expect on the cruise.

It has some good information and includes some coloring pages that younger children may like.

Safety and Security Measures of the Kids Clubs

Parents can download the Navigator’s App and use it to directly contact the youth counselors at any given time.

Counselors cannot give any medication to your child, but there is a trained First Aid Cast Member in the Nursery at all times.

At Disney Cruise kids clubs, each child has a wristband for identification. These spaces are secure because only adults who you authorize can collect your child and they have to know the password.

Tips for Parents

To give your children the best Disney Cruise kids club experience, we’ve rounded up some of the most practical tips that parents can use in planning their perfect Disney Cruise vacation:

  • Familiarize yourself with the corresponding Disney Cruise kids club ages to find out the best options for your child
  • Explore the different clubs and attend the open houses with your children during their specified times
  • Make sure to provide diapers, wipes, and pull-ups if your child is not potty-trained
  • Use the family playtime hours (8 AM – 9 AM) in the nursery as an opportunity to spend quality time with your toddlers
  • Quiet spaces and movie rooms are always available if your kids need to take a break or a nap!

Disney Cruise Kids Clubs – Final Thoughts

disneycruisekidsclub

The Kid’s Clubs on all of the Disney Ships are excellent.

The environment is well designed, the Counsellors are wonderful and the mix between scheduled activities and free choice of things to do is just right.

Most kids will love it. And parents too!

You do have to be prepared so that your child may not want to spend much time with you! Other children, never really take to it and won’t want to spend time there.

It just depends on the individual.

My eldest, who is now an adult, never really wanted to spend time there. My two sons would spend all the time they possibly could in the kid’s clubs.

Be prepared for either scenario!

One thing which is particularly great about the kid’s clubs is that my sons have formed lasting friendships with people who they have met on the Disney Cruises. It can be a wonderful bonding experience.

Is a 2 year old able to play in Andy’s Room on the Fantasy, with his parents of course, during Open House? Is there an Open House for this room, guess is apart of Oceaneers Club, everyday? Many thanks!

Sunday 14th of January 2024

Yes you can take your 2 year old to the Open House. They are usually scheduled every day and you will find out the time on your Navigator App

Sunday 23rd of July 2023

This may seem a silly question but we're doing our first cruise soon and my child will be 3 1/2. She's worried about how she asks me to come and get her if she's not having fun or she misses me? Do you know what the process is for them letting parents know that a kid wants/needs to be collected? I don't want to be going back every 1/2 hour to check she's ok, but I also want to be able to tell her the plan to reassure her that she won't be stuck there if she's not feeling comfortable

Wednesday 26th of July 2023

Don't worry! The Cast Members at the Kids Club are very aware that this can happen. You will be contacted by text if they need to collect here. You can also spend some time with her at the Open Houses that they have so that she feels more comfortable.

Friday 9th of June 2023

I was wondering what, if any, separation there is in the younger (3 to 12 yr.) club space? We are planning a cruise next year and my daughter will be 4. I want her to have fun in the club space, but if she is around 9, 10, 11, year olds, I can foresee there being possible issues, given the age and size gap. Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you.

Sunday 11th of June 2023

The are different spaces for each age Group so all kids are with the same age Groups. On all the ships there is a corridor connecting the spaces, but this is more for the older children to use so they can go between the different areas if they want. At 4 years old she would be with her own age Group. Disney Kids Clubs really are the best at sea.

Tuesday 24th of January 2023

Just got off magic. They do not feed your kids anything in the kids club. FYI.

Wednesday 25th of January 2023

@Sarah, do you know if they just flat don’t allow eating and drinking there or can I drop off quick food instead of having to pull him out? Also, my son doesn’t have a cell phone. Is there a way for kids to communicate with their parents besides giving them their own device with the navigator app?

Going on the Wonder to Alaska in May for 7 days as my first cruise with a 10 year old and 8 month infant

Thursday 12th of January 2023

Thanks for this post. My only question… Is eating at the kids club for lunch and dinner available every day? I thought I read elsewhere that it was only select days.

Thanks for all the other info. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Monday 16th of January 2023

I don't believe that lunch and dinner in the Kids Clubs is an option at the moment.

Top 14 activities for kids on the Disney Fantasy cruise

By: Author Morgan

Posted on Published: September 5, 2023  - Last updated: October 9, 2023

Wondering what your family will do on your Disney cruise? Looking for Disney Cruise tips ? Here are the top activities for kids on the Disney Fantasy cruise!

We recently got back from a 7 day cruise on the Disney Fantasy with our 3 and 4 year old kids.

It was a 7 day carribbean cruise with 3 full sea days – and I was concerned about being bored on the ship.

After spending a week on the ship, I really realized the depth of everything that the Disney cruises have to offer, and I can hardly imagine going on a shorter cruise!

But, I wanted to write today and share some of my favorite kid-friendly activities to do on the Disney Fantasy cruise ship!

activities for kids on the Disney Fantasy cruise

Top activities for kids on the Disney Fantasy cruise

Here are the top activities for kids to do on Disney cruise ships.

Of course, I have to start with the most obvious – the kids clubs. For kids aged 3-11, that is the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab .

These are dedicated kids spaces that kids can be dropped off and picked up from. At this age, they cannot check themselves out.

On the Disney Fantasy, the Oceaneer Club includes a Tinkerbell inspired craft space, a Star Wars video game room, a Marvel room (with no apparant purpose just some displays), a Toy Story playroom (targeting younger kids), and a light up dance floor.

The Oceaneer’s Lab is an adjoining space that usually attracts the older kids in this range. In there they have more games, labs, and organized activities.

There are scheduled activities and character visits all day every day in the Oceaneer’s space. I suggest you scroll through the app and heart anything that appeals to you, so you will get an alert when it is happening.

Some kids love the kids clubs and never want to leave. Others prefer to stick with their families. Adults are only allowed in the kids clubs during open house hours.

oceaneers club kids club disney fantasy cruise ship

Character Meet and Greets

Another thing that happens all day long on a Disney cruise is character meet and greets . The characters will have scheduled times and locations where they will take photos with kids or adults who wait in line to see them.

My kids especially liked meeting the princesses. Since they didn’t have masks on, they could actually talk to the kids and were very sweet and even remembered them on repeat visits.

Just know that some of the lines can get VERY long. It’s better for an adult to wait in line and then have the kids brought in at the last minute.

Also be careful getting into very long lines – sometimes the character changes mid-line and you might end up meeting someone different than who was at the end of the line when you got into it!

pluto disney fantasy cruise ship

Midship Detective Agency

The Midship Detective Agency was my 4 year olds favorite part of the cruise – he did a total of 6 scavenger hunts over the course of the week.

These are super fun hunts where you go to a main desk on deck 5 or 2 and get a scavenger hunt map. You have to look for framed “paintings” on the wall that are actually screens. They are marked on the map.

Once you get to each, you hold up a special card and a clue is revealed. You get hints or can use them to rule out suspects.

These were fun because they take you all over the ship – its a great way to get to know the layout. Kids and adults loved the mystery and the fun!

doing the midship detective agency scavenger hunt on the disney fantasy cruise ship

Bippity Boppity Boutique

Bippity Boppity Boutique is an additional charge but it seemed to be really popular with the families of elementary aged girls.

This is a salon where kids can get a dramatic prince or princess makeover, with makeup, updo hairstyling, and a royal gown.

We skipped this one because my son was very uninterested and my daughter is a bit young for it. But it seemed very, very popular, especially on sea day.

Know that it is about $200 -$300 per person and that you need to have a reservation in advance, they were completely booked up on our cruise.

family pool disney cruise

Of course, kids are going to love going to the pool. There are 2 kid-friendly pools on the main deck. One is 2 feet deep and one is 5 foot deep.

There are also life jackets available for kids to wear, so you don’t need to bring floaties.

I will say that the pools are VERY small and get VERY crowded. My kids were not into the crowded pools.

In addition to the two main pools, there are 2 smaller pools that my kids much prefer.

One is the fountain area on the side of the pool deck near the soda fountains. I never could figure out the name of this pool, but my daughter loved it!

It has fountains and squirters, is about 6″ deep, has a clear water that looks down into the lower decks of the ship, and was in general not super crowded.

There is also the Funnel Puddle in the “Family Zone”. This area overlooks the adults only pool, so it was tucked away, but it is very clearly marked family (and I asked)!

We had a wonderful time chilling in the Funnel Puddle and were mostly the only ones there each time we went.

Plus, the waitstaff swarms this area much more than the general pool deck, so we made sure to order non-alcoholic frozen beverages for the kids while we hung out in this spot!

nemos reef splash pad disney fantasy

Splash Areas

There are two splash areas on the Fantasy – Nemo’s Reef and AquaLab.

Nemo’s Reef is a lot of large Finding Nemo figures that squirt water out. My daughter once again LOVED this area, splashing and squirting and in general having loads of fun.

There is also a Mr Ray stingray kids can slide down!

This area was generally smaller kids but I think it was labeled as up to age 9.

The AquaLab is on the far side of the ship and has a lot of knobs, levers, and wheels kids can turn and spin to dump buckets of water on themselves.

In general, I found Aqua Lab a bit lame and lackluster compared to even our most basic splash pads at home. I think they could have done it up with more action and more character branding.

But, it’s still an option!

mr rays slide nemos reef splash pad disney fantasy

Water Slides

There are 2 bigger slides on the Fantasy – Mickey’s slide and the AquaDuck.

Mickey’s slide is a yellow tube slide. It’s for kids only. You have to be 38″ tall and less than 5’5″. We saw a 12 year old get turned away for being too tall!

There is generally a medium length line here, but my 4 year old did enjoy doing it when the line was shorter.

The second slide is the Aqua Duck. This is the big tube slide that circles the whole ship.

You must be 48″ tall with an adult or 54″ alone and you ride in a tube.

This slide typically had a long line, it was closed due to wind during most of our sea days, and it was very popular when it wasn’t.

The shortest line times were definitely at night and when we were at ports.

disney fantasy frozen performance

Matinee Performances

One of the unexpected delights on our cruise was that for the two main Broadway-style shows (Aladdin and Frozen), they did a 12:45 afternoon matinee show.

This was perfect for kids who don’t like to stay up late – or who might struggle to be well behaved after dinner.

We actually ended up catching the matinee and the 8:30pm show for each of these shows – making it extra fun!

Movie Theater

One thing that I feel like doesn’t get much attention is the fact that there is a full movie theater on the ship that shows new movies that are currently in theaters.

We were able to see Elemental this way and the ship was also showing Haunted Mansion, Little Mermaid, Indiana Jones, Peter Pan and Wendy, and a few other movies.

My kids love seeing movies and so this was a huge treat and a great thing to do in the afternoons after a morning of swimming.

watching funnelvision on the disney fantasy cruise deck

Funnel Vision

Another option for catching a movie is Funnel Vision – the giant screen on the funnel by the pool. Sit in loungers and watch a movie outdoors!

We watched a movie while eating breakfast, in the pool, and just chilling in the sun. We also went up one night after dinner and watched part of a movie!

goofy golf putt putt disney fantasy cruise ship

Goofy Golf is the 9 hole putt putt course on the Fantasy ship. This is located on the 13th floor – you have to walk up stairs – just above the Aqua Labs.

Putt Putt was a huge hit with my 4 year old and a flop with my 3 year old. Luckily, it’s free so there’s no loss if your kid wants to bail.

It was very windy and very sunny up on that deck, so dress appropriately.

Sports Simulator

There is also a sports simulator where you can throw balls towards a giant screen and pretend to play soccer, football, golf, and more.

This is a small additional fee and you have to book it in advance of the cruise.

We ended up cancelling our reservation because it was during beach time on Castaway Cay, but people seemed to be having a lot of fun playing! I’d say it’s best to book on a sea day!

Deck Parties and Shows

The ship did offer a few deck parties and shows in the evenings. There was a Sail Away party Day 1, two pirate night shows, and a 25th anniversary show. There was also a farewell show the final night.

My kids were not particularly into these and they were mostly after bedtimes, but some older kids seemed to enjoy them.

kids meal macaroni and cheese disney cruise

Eating all day

If your kids like to eat, eating all day might be a great selling point. I saw an approximately 12 year old boy with the fullest plate of pizza I’ve ever seen in my life.

I’d say the buffet – Cabanas – and poolside food – Flo’s Cafe – would be the hit for kids around the clock.

My kids also loved ordering (free) room service and thought it was so cool to eat on our balcony!

There are tons of things for kids to do on the Disney Fantasy – and you will not get bored!

Tips for a disney cruise with a toddler or preschooler.

Are you planning a Disney Cruise with your toddler or preschooler in tow? Maybe you’re questioning whether cruising with a toddler is a good idea, or if you should wait until they’re older. We’ve done a few Disney cruises now with our children at all different milestones. Our first was when our daughter was 1 and our most recent was when our son was 2 and our daughter was 4. I’m happy to share my personal tips for cruising with a toddler or preschool aged child in hopes that they’ll be helpful for you!

Disney Cruise Toddler and Preschooler Tips

I’d like to start by saying that we had an amazing time on every Disney Cruise we’ve been on as a family. If you’re cruising with little ones in tow, you can’t go wrong with a Disney Cruise. They absolutely cater to families and young children and I think that makes the world of difference when it comes to cruising with young children. Plus if your kiddos are Disney fans, they’re destined to feel the magic on a Disney Cruise.

Understand what Childcare Options are Available for You

Disney Cruises offer special childcare options for children of all ages. Toddlers or Preschoolers will be able to spend time in either the Small World Nursery or the Oceaneer Club.

Disney Cruise Small World Nursery

The Small World nursery is available for children aged 6 months – 3 years old. You can reserve the nursery for an additional fee and reservations can be made in advance or same day (if there is availability). Rates are as follows:

  • $4.50 per half hour for the first child
  • note: reservations are a one hour minimum

Disney Cruise Oceaneer Club

The Oceaneer Club is available for children aged 3 – 12 that are fully potty trained. There is no additional cost to utilize the Oceaneer Club.

We’ve used both the Small World Nursery and the Oceaneer Club and they’re both wonderful! The counselors are so sweet and the available toys and entertainment are exactly what you’d expect from Disney; they don’t disappoint!

If your little one is too young for the Oceaneer Club, they can still spend time there with you during the Open House hours they have onboard. My son loved exploring the Oceaneer Club during the Open House when he was 2 and too young to actually be checked in during the day.

Choose your Stateroom Wisely

There are different stateroom categories to consider when booking your Disney Cruise with little ones in tow. We personally like spending the extra money for the Deluxe Family Stateroom (either Verandah or Oceanview).

Not only is your room larger, but you also have an additional murphy bed available. We personally felt better about our kids each sleeping in a bed close to the floor vs using the pull-down ceiling bunk.

If you’re a family of 5, the Deluxe Family Stateroom is a great choice as well!

On our first cruise when we only had one kiddo and she was used to her crib at home, we booked a Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom (not the Family Stateroom) and she slept in the pack n play and that was perfectly fine!

Regardless of stateroom size, bed rails and Pack n Plays are available to request (or you can bring your own).

Early Dining or the Early Show?

When cruising with littles ones that struggle to stay up very late, you may want to consider whether spending time as a family at dinner is priority vs watching the shows together each night.

When you book your cruise you’ll have the choice between the Main Dining or the Second Dining options.

The Main Dining is around 6pm and the Second Dining is around 8pm. The idea is that if you eat during the Main Dining, you would watch the late show. And if you eat during the Second Dining, you would watch the early show.

On our most recent cruise we tried the Second Dining because my daughter had struggled to stay awake for the shows on our previous cruise. She LOVED watching the early show with me and then making our way to the late dining. Our server was wonderful about bringing her food quickly and then she often fell asleep at the table while laying across 2 chairs. It was nice that she got to watch the entire show and also eat before she fell asleep (vs falling asleep and missing the show).

Another option you have available if you choose the Second Seating is the Dine and Play program that the Oceaneer Club hosts. You simply tell your server that you’ll be utilizing Dine and Play. Your server will bring your child’s food more quickly and then a counselor will bring the children to the Oceaneer Club while the adults take their time with their meal.

The Pools & Potty Training

Another thing to keep in mind if you’re cruising with little ones is that they must be potty trained to enjoy the pools. They cannot swim with a swim diaper.

However they can play in the themed splash zones! My kids loved these but it was a whole new world for my daughter when she could finally swim in the pools and enjoy the slides!

Lifevests are available for those who need them while swimming (or you could bring your own from home).

Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay (pronounced Castaway Key) is Disney’s private island and it’s a ton of fun! My kids really enjoyed swimming, playing in the sand, and adventuring around the island.

Scuttle’s Cove is also available at Castaway Cay for children that are aged 3-12 and potty trained. It’s essentially the Oceaneer Club option on the island.

One tip I have for Castaway Cay is that there are a limited number of strollers and wagons available on the island. They’re first come first serve, so grab one early if that would be useful to you.

There’s also a tram that runs on the island and stops at all of the main attractions along the way. It may be worthwhile using the tram if your hands are full and there aren’t any wagons or strollers available.

Don’t Forget to Reserve the Special Extras

There is so much to do on a Disney Cruise that you’ll no-doubt have an amazing time. BUT! There are extras to reserve that you don’t want to miss! While you’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet characters on board, some special character meet-and-greets are by reservation only (no additional charge but you must have a reservation).

You can make these reservations before your cruise however they do go quickly. If you miss out on booking a special character meet-and-greet ahead of time, try to reserve it right when you get on board.

Something else you may want to reserve for your children is an appointment at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or Pirates League onboard. This is an additional fee but it’s a lot of fun and very special.

I hope these tips are helpful if you’re considering a Disney Cruise with your toddler or preschooler! We loved our cruises and my kiddos still talk about all of the fun they had onboard!

If you need help booking your Disney Cruise, I recommend Love of the Magic Vacations ! They’re an amazing agency that I personally use to book our Disney Cruises. They can answer your cruise questions and get you ready to sail! You can request a free vacation quote right here .

Friends and family, you may be traveling with. They provide a bag you put supplies in at every drop-off. There is a single gate, they will come get your babies and also bring them to you at check out after getting the official call once all the procedures are complete. There is a little 2-way mirror you may be able to sneak a peek of your kiddo. No pictures are allowed by parents. Privacy concerns. Characters will come to the Nursery. Sometimes you will even get a pic from a counselor at check out. Super cute!

   5. Reservations. Space is limited. Reservations can be made onboard on a first-come, first-served basis. The best time is during the Open House on Embarkation day. They can be made anytime throughout the cruise. Availability will vary. They play with them, watch movies, make crafts, Characters come and play with them, they can nap, fed bottles, have snacks throughout the day, and serve meals at mealtime.

7. What you need to know. You provide your own supplies. While they do have food, drinks, and snacks, you will have to bring diapers, wipes, ointments, etc. If you run out, Hakuna Matata, you can buy some at the shops. Children with Special Needs are welcome to the nursery! In stateroom , babysitting is now permitted or offered. You will fill out a form with all medical information, allergies, etc. So they are knowledgable about your child’s needs. With the character interaction, if your child has fears, this is a great time to overcome them.

Basically, It’s a Small World Nursery is nothing short of amazing. Even the littles get Disney Magic . Your child is completely cared for. If an issue arises they will be in contact with you. I didn’t know what to expect going into it, but I couldn’t have asked for more. At the beginning of the cruise, my baby was scared of the characters. The picture they took with Minnie, my little was literally running away. By the end, she was running UP to multiple characters. Tiana even told me how she was just in the Nursery playing with her earlier that day. How awesome!

Comparison of Family-Friendly Cruises: Entertainment, Child Care Options, and Family-Oriented Excursions

When planning a vacation that includes young ones, finding a cruise line that caters to the needs of children while still offering entertainment and relaxation for adults can be a pivotal decision. In this comprehensive review, we delve into the family-friendly offerings of some of the leading cruise lines, focusing on their entertainment options, child care services, and excursions that are enjoyable for all ages. Our aim is to help you choose not just any cruise, but one that offers the best value and experience for your family’s unique needs.

1. Disney Cruise Line

Entertainment.

Disney Cruise Line is renowned for its character-driven entertainment, which includes live shows, deck parties, and character meet-and-greets. The Disney Magic , Disney Wonder , Disney Dream , and Disney Fantasy all feature themed cruises such as “Pirate Night,” where families can dress up, participate in themed activities, and enjoy fireworks at sea.

Child Care Options

Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab cater to children ages 3 to 12, offering activities that are not only fun but also educational. For toddlers, there’s the It’s a Small World Nursery, and for teens, Vibe provides a cool escape with video games, movies, and karaoke.

Family-Oriented Excursions

Disney excursions, or “Port Adventures,” are meticulously planned to offer family-friendly activities at various ports. These range from beach outings to cultural tours, all with a touch of Disney magic. Some excursions even include opportunities to meet and interact with characters in picturesque settings.

2. Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean stands out with its innovative ship features such as onboard surf simulators, ice-skating rinks, and zip lines. The entertainment extends to high-quality Broadway shows like “Hairspray” and “Grease,” which are sure to entertain the entire family.

Adventure Ocean is Royal Caribbean’s award-winning kids’ program, offering age-appropriate activities for children aged 3 to 17. The Royal Babies and Tots Nursery provides care for infants aged 6 months to 3 years, ensuring even the youngest family members are catered for.

Royal Caribbean’s shore excursions include adventure-packed activities such as snorkeling, hiking, and wildlife encounters, ideal for families with older children looking to explore and learn about new environments together.

3. Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line is known as “The Fun Ships” for good reason. Their ships feature a variety of fun shows, including family-friendly comedy acts and magic shows. Seuss at Sea, a special program on board, brings beloved Dr. Seuss characters to life, much to the delight of younger passengers.

Camp Ocean, Carnival’s childcare program, entertains kids from 2 to 11 years old with ocean-themed activities. For teens, Club O2 offers a hangout spot with dance parties, video games, and more, while Night Owls allows parents to enjoy a night out, knowing their kids are in good hands until late.

Carnival excels in providing excursions that cater to families, with a wide range of options that are both educational and exciting. Whether it’s exploring ancient ruins or taking part in a family beach day, there’s something for everyone.

4. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line offers a freestyle cruising approach, which is perfect for families who prefer a less structured vacation. Their entertainment includes Broadway shows like “Jersey Boys,” and onboard activities like mini-golf and large aqua parks with thrilling water slides.

The Splash Academy on Norwegian caters to kids from 3 to 12 years old, with activities tailored to different age groups. For teens, Entourage offers a cool retreat with sports, arts, and movie nights. For younger children and babies, Guppies hosts interactive parent-child activities.

Norwegian’s shore excursions are diverse, offering everything from dog-sledding adventures in Alaska to educational tours through historical European cities. These activities are designed to be accessible for families with children of all ages.

5. MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises focuses on multicultural entertainment options suitable for families, including Broadway-style theater productions, live music, and dance shows. They also offer unique Cirque du Soleil shows aboard some of their ships, providing a mesmerizing experience for all ages.

MSC’s Mini and Juniors Clubs cater to children from 3 to 11 years old, offering games, contests, and educational activities. Teens have their dedicated areas with a disco and gaming consoles, ensuring they have their own space to socialize and relax.

MSC’s family excursions are designed to be educational, fun, and safe. They offer a Family Explorer Club, which turns excursions into exciting missions that kids and parents can solve together, making each port visit a memorable adventure.

Choosing the right cruise for a family involves balancing the needs of children with the interests of adults. Disney Cruise Line is unbeatable in terms of thematic, character-driven experiences, while Royal Caribbean leads with innovative entertainment options and activities. Carnival offers a balance of fun and value, making it a popular choice for many families. Norwegian provides flexibility with its freestyle cruising, and MSC Cruises brings a European flair to family cruising, along with unique entertainment options.

Each line has its strengths, so the best choice will depend on what aspects of the cruise experience are most important to you and your family. Whether it’s high-energy adventures, educational excursions, or simply a magical time with characters your children adore, there’s a cruise line that fits your family’s needs.

Best Disney Cruise Activities for Kids

Disney Magic pools

Looking for something fun and magical to do with your kids? A Disney Cruise is the perfect vacation for families! You’ll never be bored with all of the amazing activities onboard the ship, including pirate parties and character meet-and-greets.

In this post, I will list the best Disney Cruise activities for kids, including those geared toward babies, toddlers, and big kids. You can also find tips for booking and enjoying the Disney cruise ship activities onboard!

One of the most fun places to spend time on any Disney cruise ship is the pool deck . There are so many fun activities for kids (and adults) on the pool decks, including water slides, splash pads, and character themed pools.

If your child is 3 years old or older AND potty trained, she can play in the main cruise ship pools. Disney Cruise Line offers small, shallow pools that are the perfect size for smaller kids who are older than 3 and don’t require swim diapers. My four-year-old was even able to stand in the Mickey Pool on the Disney Fantasy cruise ship.

swim vests on Disney Magic Cruise ship

*Insider Tip- If your child can’t quite reach the bottom or if he wants to swim in the deeper pools, Disney Cruise Line provides swim vests right on the pool deck. These are free of charge and readily available for anyone who wants to use them!

Nephews’ Splash Zone on the Disney Magic

Additionally, Disney Cruise Line is one of the only cruise lines that offers baby pool areas for younger children, including those in swim diapers. If you are traveling with toddlers or babies, rest assured that your child will have lots of fun on the pool deck no matter on which Disney cruise ship your family decides to sail.

Disney Cruise Kids Club

Disney Cruise Line offers kids clubs for all ages, including toddlers and babies. The Oceaneer Club and the Oceaneer Lab are located on each of the Disney cruise ships. Childcare at these kids’ clubs is included in the price of your cruise. However, your child must be at least 3 years old AND potty trained to participate in the child care programs.

Oceaneer Lab on Disney Magic

If your child does not meet the requirements, you can visit these super fun youth areas during Open House hours with your child. If you are cruising with a baby or a toddler under the age of three, you still have a child care option. It’s a Small World Nursery is a childcare area for babies and toddlers, and it is located on each of the Disney Cruise Line ships. This child care option is NOT included in the price of your cruise, and you will be charged an hourly fee to use the nursery.

Your kids will undoubtedly enjoy meeting the Disney characters on the cruise ship. Mickey and friends frequently provide meet and greets in all different areas of the ship. Those cruising with a baby or toddler will be happy to know that these lines are nowhere near as long as they are at Disney World.

Pirate Chip and Dale on Disney Cruise

In addition to Mickey and friends, guests on Disney Cruise Line ships may find their favorite princesses as well as characters from Marvel, Star Wars, and more.

Scheduled Activities

If you check the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App each day, you’ll find all sorts of fun activities available for kids. Some of the common entertainment options include game shows, crafts, cooking lessons, and organized sports. If you are sailing with a toddler or baby, you’ll find plenty to do too!

Toddler Time is a special activity that typically takes place once per day on your cruise. If you attend a Toddler Time event, you will find age appropriate toys and climbing features perfect for little ones. This event is free to attend. Just look at the daily schedule of activities on the cruise, and you should see it listed.

Also, Jack Jack’s Diaper Dash is a super adorable and hilarious event that takes place usually once per cruise. The baby race occurs in the atrium and is for those babies who are crawling but not walking.

Broadway Style Shows

One of our family’s favorite activities on Disney ships is the nightly entertainment. Each ship features three main Broadway style shows that are full of excellent performances. We like to grab snacks and popcorn before heading into the theater to enjoy shows like Aladdin , Frozen , and Tangled .

Plus, toddlers have even been known to sit through the shows, which last about an hour. While the DCL Broadway style shows are scheduled for later in the evening, my three-year-old was able to stay up and enjoy the live entertainment. A great tip for those sailing with toddlers is to put your little ones in pajamas before the show in case they fall asleep during the performance!

Dining Entertainment

The dining rooms on the Disney cruise ships are super kid friendly. You’ll find kids menus with activities and coloring pictures available. Plus, many of the main dining rooms even feature live performances and shows while you dine.

You can request a highchair or a booster seat right on your online account before you set sail. Your servers are really helpful with choosing foods for your kids and can even make special changes to the meal if needed. Also, the chef in the kitchen will puree food for you so that you don’t have to worry about packing baby food if you are sailing with a baby.

More Reasons We Love DCL

Disney Cruise Line allows guests to make special requests for their staterooms, including some great options for toddlers and babies. Some of the items you can request include:

  • crib (pack-n-play)
  • diaper genie

We usually request a bed rail for the sofa or bed in our stateroom rather than asking for a crib. Your stateroom host will set up the bed rail each evening while you are at dinner and then will turn the bed back into a couch each morning.

Curtain in Disney Cruise Stateroom with towel animal on bed

Another nice feature for those traveling with kids is the huge curtain in your room that separates the sleeping area from the living space. This is especially useful during nap times because you can lay your toddler down and close the curtain to keep light and noise out. This way you can talk, watch TV, and get ready for dinner without disturbing your baby’s nap.

Additionally, I like to borrow a stroller from Guest Services during our cruises. The hallways on the cruise ships are fairly narrow, so you probably don’t want to bring a really wide stroller with you. A narrow umbrella stroller would work, but we like to have a stroller that reclines for our toddler to nap on the go. The City Mini Baby Jogger that Disney Cruise Line has at Guest Services is perfect! It reclines and provides storage space in the basket under the seat.

Wagons, strollers, and wheelchairs on Castaway Cay

It’s also super compact and light. My favorite feature is that I can collapse it with just one hand and easily carry it around with me. If you choose to borrow the stroller once on the ship, Guest Services will put a charge on your cruise account for around $250. Once you return the stroller to them, they will remove this charge. So, it ends up being free to borrow!

Are kids free on Disney Cruise Line?

One of the most common questions for any family interested in booking a Disney Cruise Line vacation is this one. Are kids free on Disney Cruise Line? Unfortunately, babies, toddlers, and kids are NOT free on Disney Cruise Line no matter their age. Instead, you will pay a cruise fare for your child based on the occupancy of your room.

↓↓ Visit My Etsy Shop ↓↓

Printable Cruise Planner

The first two guests on your stateroom reservation will be charged the full amount. The third and fourth guests on your same room reservation will have a lower rate. So, if you are sailing with only yourself and your infant, you will pay full price for each of you since you are the first two guests on the stateroom reservation.

Since my family and I travel as a party of four, my husband and I pay the full cruise fare as the first two names on our reservation. We then pay the lower rate for our two daughters who are the third and fourth guests on our reservation.

Disney Cruise with a Baby

You may feel hesitant to book a Disney Cruise Line vacation with a baby, and that’s completely understandable. Cruising with a baby comes with a whole new set of questions and concerns that other cruisers may not even consider. Luckily, Disney Cruise Line (along with all other major cruise lines) has an infant policy put in place regarding cruising with a baby.

Disney cruise ship and character statues with text Disney Cruise- Best Vacation with Toddlers

Some of the most common questions you will see about taking a baby on a Disney cruise are as follows: How old does a baby have to be to cruise? Those debating cruising with an infant will want to ensure their child meets the age requirements. Per Disney Cruise Line policy, you are able to bring your baby on a cruise as long as he or she is at least 6 months of age by the day you set sail.

It’s important to note that this is the infant policy for MOST Disney Cruise Line sailings. If you are sailing on a Transatlantic or Panama Canal cruise itinerary, your baby must be at least 1 year old to sail.

Final Thoughts on Disney Cruise Ship Activities for Kids

The Disney Cruise Line crew members do an amazing job of helping your vacation run smoothly. Your nightly dinner servers will entertain your kids with things like making balloon animals and performing magic tricks. The room hosts do an amazing job of keeping your stateroom clean as well. Your stateroom and bathrooms are cleaned and organized each morning while you are out enjoying the ship or a port of call.

Then, while you are at dinner, your stateroom host will return to clean and organize your stateroom with a turndown service. Traveling with kids is never an easy task, but Disney Cruise Line makes it as relaxing as it can be. They tend to take care of everything for your kids, which means the adults can enjoy the trip too!

Disney Cruise With 2 year Old

I Took My Two Year Old On A Disney Cruise And It Was Amazing!

Disney Cruise with a toddler

Up the gangway, we fumbled, sounds of applause echoing in the distance. As we approached the entrance it became clear that the applause was for each guest/family that was being announced while boarding the ship! In true princess fashion, my daughter embraced it, soaking up the first bit of magic like a sponge. Within minutes our anxiety jumped overboard leaving us with one of the most spectacular family vacations full of lifelong memories.

A Guide To A Disney Cruise With A Toddler

Disney Cruise With A Toddler

To help ensure that you make the most of your cruise we have put together a great guide on taking a toddler on a Disney Cruise.  We took our not-fully potty trained, Halloween-loving daughter aboard the Disney Dream for Halloween On The High Seas.

One will quickly discover the first way to secure cruise success with a toddler starts before you step onboard.

Choosing The Perfect Stateroom

Ultimately this will come down to your budget because without a doubt the Concierge Royal Suite would be the ideal room for everyone! Who wouldn’t want a separate bedroom, a dining table, and more than six feet of space to move around in? Sadly, the magical price tag on that is hefty. Since the majority of us are looking for something on the more affordable side here are a few tips when choosing the perfect stateroom on a Disney Cruise with a toddler.

To Veranda or Not To Veranda

Disney Veranda With Toddler

There are actually three types of balconies offered on a Disney Cruise. According to the Disney Cruise Line website:

  • The  standard verandah  features an open-air balcony skirted by an acrylic wall, allowing for a full view of the horizon even while seated.
  • The  whitewall verandah  offers open-air lounging with a solid wall from the deck to the railing. Most of these staterooms are located in the aft portion of the ship.
  • The  navigator’s verandah is enclosed for greater privacy while still affording a stunning view and sea breezes through a large, open-air porthole above the railing

The verandas on a Disney Cruise are designed to be as safe as possible, however, NEVER leave your children unattended on the veranda. The minute we took our little gal out she immediately tried to climb on the furniture. Instant heart attack.

After barricading the furniture into the furthest corner of the balcony we felt at more ease so long as we were with her. We had the whitewall verandah that was a solid wall from the deck to the railing. Overall, the veranda ended up giving our family more of our own space. The balcony doors are childproof and actually quiet.

This brings me to my next point. Get the balcony for you. This is your vacation too! Once your little one goes to sleep for the evening having a place to retreat will make your cruise more enjoyable. Many glasses of wine were enjoyed under the stars on our balcony while our daughter was rocked to sleep by the waves. You can easily see inside the cabin with ease so no monitor is necessary.

Does Size Matter?

Disney Cruise stateroom with verandah

The size will come into play depending on how many people are sleeping in your cabin. The majority of rooms have a couch that converts to a bed with an upper berth pull-down bed.

Cribs and pack-n-plays are available upon request. YES! They do provide them! They also provide Diaper Genies! There is also a heavy curtain that separates the sitting and sleeping areas. Perfect for tots who can’t sleep if they lay their eyes on their parents.

Choose Your Location Wisely

Once you have determined the type of stateroom you will be staying in then you get to pick your location. Here are a few quick things to consider while picking your location:

  • Look at what will be directly above you. Is your stateroom right above the pool area where kids will be running? Or perhaps your room is below the nightclub!
  • Being near the elevator giveth and taketh. Easy access comes with noise. Families waiting for the elevator, elated children running to their staterooms, and the general foot traffic of the entire deck passing by your room.
  • If motion sickness is a concern consider getting a room on one of the lower decks in the middle of the ship.
  • Keep in mind the exact same room can cost more or less depending on where you are located on the ship.

Pre-Registering For Small World Nursery and Oceaneer Kids Club

Disney Cruise with a toddler

In the words of Ursula, “Here’s The Deal….” the youth clubs are included in the price of your cruise BUT your child has to be completely potty trained and three years old or older to be able to attend. If they’re not then you have to go to the Small World Nursery…and PAY!

That’s right angelfish if you want to enjoy a few hours child-free, which I highly recommend, then you will have to register the kiddos in their appropriate areas.  The Small World Nursery does charge for childcare on the Disney Cruise. To see what the going rate is, hop over to the Disney Cruise website.

Keep in mind the Small World Nursery does have a limited about of space so plan accordingly. Especially if you are looking for an evening at an adults-only restaurant. Registration can be completed on embarkation day but who wants to spend time doing paperwork when you could be exploring!  At some point during the first-day families will need to check into the youth clubs to finalize their registration.

Disney Cruise Adventure Packet

Prepare your little cruisers with a Disney Cruise Adventure Packet to get them ready for their time aboard the ship. This is going to be a whole new world for them with new rules and boundaries. Help them understand what is going to happen with this great free packet from Disney.

Book Your Shore Excursions

Guide For Disney Cruise With Toddler

When the time rolls around to book the excursions, you have your primary excursion and a backup ready in the event it is full. That way you don’t have to regroup to see what would work while everything books up around you.

However, I will give you an insider tip: Staying on board while the ship is in port is the best way to have the ship’s amenities to yourself. Pools are practically empty, with no lines for waterslides, food, or anything!

Don’t forget to check out all the great activities there are in Castaway Cay , Disney’s private island.

Book Onboard Experiences

Meeting Tiana

However, after closer examination, I realized that I never had the opportunity to book it. Disney opens up onboard experiences to those who have sailed previously so by the time it came around to first-time cruisers there was nothing left.

Naturally, we would be walking right by this royal event which invoked sheer delight in my daughter who was only met with disappointment when we couldn’t meet them. Now that we have “paid our dues” by getting our first sailing under our belt hopefully we will be able to make reservations next time for prime onboard events.

Other important events to book ahead are the Bibbity-Boppity Boutique, Princess Tea Times, and much-needed spa services for the adults.

Early Dinner Vs Late Dinner

Enchanted Garden

Disney is on a rotational dining plan, meaning that each night you will be having dinner in one of their special themed dining rooms. The location of the cruise may yield different regional menu items. A great example is for those going on a Disney Alaskan Cruise.

Dining Times

There are two dining times that you get to choose from. The main seating is at 5:45 pm and the second seating is at 8:15 pm. The seating times correspond with the showtimes. If you want to catch the early show, sign up for the second seating and vice versa.

This decision was a tough one because after pouring over endless blog posts on which time would be best we ultimately choose to go with the main seating for two reasons. One, because our daughter has always been an early eater and waiting would likely result in a toddler typhoon of misery.  Second, we keep her on a somewhat strict bedtime that was past the time of the second seating.

A few of our cruise mates opted for the second seating because they wanted their kids to see the show and knew the later dining time would fit perfectly. They would have a snack/early dinner at the buffet, show and then if they felt like it they would venture to the later dinner. In the end, it really comes down to what will work best for your family.

Food For Thought

Guide For Disney Cruise With Toddler

  • Keep in mind that you will likely be sharing a table with another family. It is a great way to meet new friends aboard the ship. Special requests can be made if you choose to sit with only your family.
  • In the event you don’t make it to your scheduled dinner time there is always the buffet, bistros, and 24-hour room service available.
  • Disney Cruise lines have mastered the art of entertaining a toddler during dinner. From their own special menu and coloring book, to the entertaining waitstaff helps makes dining out easier.

Download The Disney Cruise App

I recommend downloading this app right now if you have a Disney Cruise booked. The app has everything you need at your fingertips. It even works on the ship so you can pull up the Navigator (The daily schedule of events), make reservations, and so much more.

Toddler ABOARD! Great Activities For Toddlers On A Disney Cruise

Mickey Pool, Aquaduck and Mickey Slide

The Funnel Puddle is a wading pool that is perfect for little ones. I feel this one is not AS crowded as the pools located one deck below. There is also an adults-only pool with a bar that makes for a great escape from the family poolside chaos.

It is now time to answer the ever-popular question of does my child need to be potty-trained to go into the pools on a Disney Cruise?

The answer is yes. Swim diapers are not allowed in the pools and they are monitored. This can be a huge bummer for little ones but Disney has addressed that with an awesome Splash Pad that you can wear a swim diaper in! Our daughter was mostly potty-trained and likely would have done great in the pool but we were not going to chance her having an accident. An accident would mean the entire pool would have to shut down for an extended period of time. That spoils the fun for others and we all paid good money to have fun on vacation.

One awesome thing about Disney is that soft drinks are included! Other cruise lines will often charge by the can, while here they flow like milk and honey. A drink station is conveniently located next to the pools.  There is also free soft serve ice cream located next to Donald’s pool.

Nemo’s Reef, Our Favorite Activity On A Disney Cruise For A Toddler

Splash Area On Disney Cruise with kiddie-slide

Nemo’s reef has a small kiddie-slide, a soft wet-deck surface and best of all it is completely shaded! Fun characters from Finding Nemo are found all throughout the large splash area with tons of fountains, bubblers and pop jets.

The AquaDuck

Tips for a disney cruise

Per the Disney Cruise Line here are the requirements to ride:

  • AquaDuck is designed for Guests 42″ or taller
  • Single riders must be 54″ or taller
  • Children under 7 must ride with someone 14 years of age or older, provided the child is at least 42″ tall
  • No snorkel equipment or swim masks are permitted

Mickey Slide

Another great feature is the Mickey Slide that is designed for guests 4-14 years of age. The Mickey Slide is supported by the massive huge gloved Mickey hand.  The height requirement for the Mickey Slide on the Disney Cruise is between 38″ (3′ 2″) and 64″ (5′ 4″) tall.

Open Houses for Kids Clubs

Be sure to check your Navigator for special shows and events that might be happening. Special deck parties, storytelling, and character greetings will all be listed there. Don’t worry if you miss a character, there is a strong likelihood that they will make random appearances throughout the ship.

Special Toddler Events

Toddler Events On A Disney Cruise

Goofy’s Sports Deck

Looking for a little friendly family competition? Head up to Goofy’s Sports Deck to play a round of mini-golf or shoot some hoops. Sophie preferred to run around the basketball court chasing the basketballs. The mini-golf has nine holes with a goofy twist. Crooked and bent golf clubs are available as golfers attempt to follow in Goofy’s golf lessons.

Fish Extenders

This is not an official Disney Cruise activity but rather something that fellow cruise mates put together prior to sailing. Right outside each statement room is a little fish or sea themed wall hanging. Families that are participating in the Fish Extender hang a nice bag or pocket from the fish for others to drop off little gifts in.

The gifts exchange is set up through an online group. To find a Fish Extender group simply search Facebook for the name of your ship and sail date. Often times families sailing together will only do the exchange between themselves.  We opted to not participate in it this year for a few reasons but mainly because we didn’t have the extra room in our luggage to haul yet even more stuff and Sophie wouldn’t quite appreciate it. Kids did love coming back to their staterooms to see what treats were left in their Fish Extender.

Id love to take a Disney cruise one day. Only reason I haven’t so far is because they’re so expensive compared to other cruise lines. Would you says it’s worth the extra?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post. The Disney Cruise definitely was the priciest cruise we have been on. Honestly, It is worth it if your family enjoys Disney. If not I think another line might be a better fit. My daughter is obsessed with all things Disney, pair that with their outstanding customer services, a splash pad she could use without being potty-trained and having a strong kid-focus made it worth the extra money. Their kid’s clubs are also quite impressive!

I love the perspective of sharing your experience of cruising with a toddler! I am like you in that I encourage people to travel with their children, even if they think that they are too young to remember things. Thanks for sharing!

Great mind think alike! My daughter still talks about it to this day! It’s amazing how much they actually do remember! Keep sharing because I have read many of your articles especially when we visited Disney World for the first time! ☺️

' data-src=

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Disney Cruises and it’s definitely on my family’s bucket list! Looks like a fantastic time!

I can’t recommend them enough! I hope that you get the opportunity to check that off the list sooner than later! ☺️

Disney Fantasy with a 2 year old?

Cool Cruiser

My wife and I are looking at a Disney vacation for summer of 2015 and right now we are leaning towards the 7 night western Caribbean cruise on Disney Fantasy. Our daughter will have just turned two when we go on this cruise. The ports are Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Falmouth, and Castaway Cay.

I've been reading through a lot of reviews and posts and already picked up a lot of information. I understand the pool rules regarding swim diapers, and the nursery situation too, as examples. I am still unsure of the big picture, though.

My wife and I are not planning to drop our daughter off or use childcare in the nursery. We want to have our daughter with at least one of us the whole time. Outside of those staffed nurseries, is there a good selection of activities we can enjoy with our daughter during the day? Play areas, activities, etc, that we can enjoy together? How is the entertainment factor for a two year old on board each day?

Likewise, do shore excursions offer fun options for a two year old? Are there excursions that are designed with cruisers that young in mind? Any feedback on shore time with young toddlers is very helpful.

Finally, any testimonials about the health care are appreciated. Being away from our pediatrician, especially in foreign areas, brings up a little anxiety in case something goes wrong. Any input on the quality of the medical care on board would be helpful and reassuring.

Overall, we just want to feel confident that the days and early evenings with our daughter will be entertaining and safe. We stayed at Animal Kingdom at WDW when she was 9 months old and Disney expertly met all our needs. We are looking at the cruise as a different option, but just have that worry that our daughter might become bored if the entertainment/activity options for her are limited.

Thanks, in advance, for your help. It is greatly appreciated!

You are welcome at any "family" area or family activity. You can go to the Oceaneer's Club with your daughter during "open house" hours. As you noted, there is a splash area to play, toddler exercise session most morning, etc.

LOTS of places to hang out/play,and have fun.

I feel you will have plenty to do. We did 7 nights with our son, who was at the time 9 months and there was a lot of group activities. He would have gotten even more out of it if he was older I think.

We took my grandson on the Fantasy the week after he turned two. He was never bored. He liked the shows, the characters, the water area, everything.

The doctor onboard can take care of anything that might pop up. Unless your child has some medical condition that necessitates special care, you likely will have no need for the doctor.

We did Eastern Caribbean so I can't help with the ports.

BTW, two years later he still talks about the ship.

There are no excursions designed with 2 year olds in mind, but many are suitable for them. You may find "on your own" the better way to go--you can have your own time schedule. If the child is tired, hungry, etc. you can head back to the ship..

The medical care on the ship is excellent. As above, unless your child has some sort of chronic problem, it is unlikely that you will need it, but it is there 24/7 for emergencies and they have regular "office hours" for non-emergency needs.

I took my then 2 year old niece of her first cruise last year and she absolutely loved it. At least once a month she tells me "I need to go back on the Disney boat". She loved the Disney characters, the toddler splash zone, walking around the ship checking out all the areas, watching the babiy races, chit chatting with the cruise staff and the character dance party to name a few. There were so many things going on to choose from.

She did find the shows too loud so we found other things to do.

The day of the Pirate Party, I put her down for a late nap so she would be able to stay awake to enjoy it.

Do not worry there is plenty for a 2 year old to enjoy.

As for the ports, in Grand Cayman we went to the beach at Royal Palms. In Cozumel we went to Playa Mia. Even though she loved the beach she enjoyed the water park more. It was perfect for her age.

She had such a good time we are sailing again in a few weeks.

Just want to say thanks for these replies. So helpful to hear each testimonial as we plan and make some decisions here. You're the best!

We took our daughter on Disney Fantasy at 22 months for the 7 night eastern Caribbean cruise and it was the best family vacation we've had. It was just the 3 of us and we never ran out of things to do. We got off at each stop and explored the beaches and shops early before most people without kids were up and going. Castaway cay was amazing. So many fun places for little ones to play, particularly the splash area and the Dino dig. We went to numerous open houses of the kids clubs and she played and interacted with characters. We got to the character meet and greets right before they started and saw so many characters without long waits. All the pictures we got were a treasure as I look back at my little girl when she was an only child and think about the memories we made. She also started sleeping in a "big bed" on this cruise because our room steward set up the pull out bed with a rail along with the pack n play the first night and she wanted so badly to sleep in the "big bed" so we let her and the day we got home we bought her a big bed and moved out the crib. Sweet memories. I can't say enough good things about our Disney cruise. The dining rooms, the staff, the shows, the fireworks. We loved it all and we kept our daughter with us the whole time and she loved everything just as much.

Thanks again everyone! We wound up booking the cruise and can't wait! We actually opted for the Eastern itinerary in the end. Your feedback was so helpful and hugely appreciated. =)

We took our (then) new two year old on the Wonder last year and he had a blast!! He loved meeting the characters, playing in the splash area, and seeing the shows. He remembers the cruise as the "boat with the ice cream". I know you said you weren't planning on using the nursery but I did want to add that we did use it and he loved it, he would throw fits when we picked him up. They were wonderful there, in fact I am not hesitating to use the nursery some for my baby on our next cruise (she will be 5 months).

Oceanview vs Verandah Comparison: Navigating Your Perfect Cruise Stateroom

Choosing between an oceanview vs. verandah stateroom can be one of the most exciting – and sometimes daunting – decisions when planning your first time going on a Disney cruise or your tenth. As a seasoned cruiser who’s sailed with my wife and two kids on various lines, I’ve experienced the pros and cons of both room types. Let’s dive into the world of cruise accommodations and explore which option might be best for your next nautical adventure!

Understanding Cruise Ship Stateroom Categories

Before we compare oceanview and verandah staterooms, it’s essential to understand the main categories available on most cruise ships. These categories cater to different preferences and budgets:

  • Inside Cabins: No windows and located within the ship’s interior. These are the most budget-friendly, offering a cozy, no-frills experience.
  • Oceanview Cabins: Feature a window or porthole that allows natural light and a view of the sea. They’re priced higher than inside cabins, offering a comfortable middle ground for those wanting to experience the ocean without stepping outside.
  • Balcony (Verandah) Cabins: Come with a private outdoor space equipped with seating. These are more expensive than oceanview cabins, ideal for those who enjoy spending time outdoors in privacy.
  • Suites: The most luxurious option, suites are the largest cabins available, often featuring premium amenities and exclusive perks. These are often referred to as the “Concierge” level on Disney Cruise Line because they offer a higher level of service and convenience.

These four categories are standard across most major cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Carnival, and Disney Cruise Line, though specific names, features, and pricing may vary slightly.

Many consider oceanview and verandah staterooms among the best staterooms on a Disney cruise due to their perfect balance of comfort, views, and value. Let’s explore these options further!

Oceanview Staterooms: A Room with a View

An oceanview stateroom with large round porthole window

Key Features:

  • Window or porthole (non-opening)
  • Natural light and sea views
  • Generally less expensive than verandah rooms
  • Typically located on lower and middle decks

Oceanview staterooms offer a glimpse of the outside world through a window or porthole. On Disney Cruise Line ships, these windows are often quite large, especially in the Deluxe Family Oceanview category. Some even feature a padded seating area in the window – perfect for curling up with a book while watching the waves.

Size and Layout

Oceanview rooms are typically similar in size to inside staterooms, though some lines offer larger “deluxe” or “family” oceanview options. Here’s a breakdown of oceanview stateroom sizes on Disney Cruise Line ships:

  • Disney Magic/Wonder : 214 sq ft
  • Disney Dream/Fantasy : 204 sq ft
  • Disney Wish/Destiny/Treasure : 218 sq ft

These rooms usually feature a queen-size bed, a sitting area with a couch (often convertible for additional sleeping space), and a split bathroom design unique to Disney ships.

  • Budget-conscious cruisers who want natural light
  • Families who need more space than an inside room
  • Cruisers prone to seasickness (seeing the horizon helps!)
  • Those who don’t plan to spend much time in their room

Potential Drawbacks:

  • No private outdoor space
  • Limited fresh air (windows don’t open)
  • Some may have obstructed views (always check before booking)

Verandah Staterooms: Your Private Outdoor Oasis

Deck chairs and a small table on a Disney Cruise Ship verandah

  • Private balcony with seating
  • Floor-to-ceiling glass doors
  • Fresh air and ocean breezes
  • More spacious feel
  • Usually located on higher decks

Verandah staterooms (also called balcony cabins) are a step up from oceanview rooms, offering your own private outdoor space. This can be a game-changer, especially on scenic cruises or warm-weather itineraries.

A Disney Wish Verandah Stateroom

A Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah onboard the Disney Wish

Verandah rooms are often slightly larger than oceanview staterooms, with the added bonus of outdoor space. On Disney ships, verandah staterooms range from about 246 to 299 square feet, including the balcony. The interior layout is similar to oceanview rooms, but with the addition of the balcony access.

  • Cruisers who value private outdoor space
  • Couples looking for romantic moments
  • Families who want extra room to spread out
  • Anyone cruising to scenic destinations (like Alaska or the Norwegian Fjords)
  • Those who enjoy dining or relaxing on their balcony
  • More expensive than oceanview rooms
  • Balcony noise can sometimes be an issue
  • Privacy concerns (though most cruise lines have measures to ensure privacy between balconies)

Comparing Across Cruise Lines

While Disney Cruise Line offers great options, it’s worth considering how they compare to other major cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, and others for your family.

Royal Caribbean

  • Offers “Virtual Balconies” in some inside rooms with floor-to-ceiling HD screens displaying live outside views
  • Unique interior-facing balcony rooms overlooking Central Park or the Promenade on Oasis-class ships
  • “Infinite Verandah” on some newer ships, featuring a floor-to-ceiling window that opens halfway down
  • See our Disney Cruise Line vs. Royal Caribbean page for a comparison

Norwegian Cruise Line

  • “Studio” oceanview rooms designed for solo travelers on some ships
  • “The Haven” – a ship-within-a-ship concept with premium oceanview and balcony suites
  • Some ships feature “The Waterfront,” a promenade that brings the indoors out with oceanfront dining and bars
  • Review our Disney Cruise Line vs. Norwegian article to compare

Carnival Cruise Line

  • Some oceanview rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows
  • Select ships offer “Havana” staterooms with special pool access
  • “Cloud 9 Spa” staterooms (both oceanview and balcony) with special spa perks
  • Read our Disney Cruise Line vs. Carnival Cruise Line comparison for more

MSC Cruises

  • “Yacht Club” suites with exclusive lounge and pool access
  • Some ships feature “Infinite Ocean View” cabins with a panoramic window that slides down to create a balcony-like experience

Factors to Consider When Choosing

When deciding between an oceanview and verandah stateroom, consider the following:

  • Budget: Verandah rooms typically cost more. Is the extra expense worth it for your trip?
  • Itinerary: Will you be cruising somewhere with stunning scenery? A verandah might be more valuable in Alaska than in the Caribbean.
  • Length of cruise: For longer sailings, having private outdoor space can be a nice perk.
  • Time in the room: If you plan to be out and about most of the time, a less expensive oceanview might suffice.
  • Season and weather: A verandah is more enjoyable in warm climates.
  • Ship activities: If the ship has a lot of outdoor spaces and activities, you might not need a private balcony.
  • Personal preferences: Do you value privacy and quiet time? A verandah might be worth the splurge.

For a detailed analysis of the different cabin categories, please refer to our articles on Inside Stateroom vs. Oceanview Stateroom and Deluxe Stateroom vs. Deluxe Family Stateroom .

Our Family’s Experience

Our family has experienced both oceanview and verandah staterooms on various cruises. On our first three-night Disney cruise to the Bahamas, we opted for an oceanview stateroom to save money on shore excursions and other onboard experiences. The large porthole was perfect for our kids to watch sail away and provided plenty of natural light.

For our 7-night Alaska cruise, however, we splurged on a verandah room. It was absolutely worth it to step outside and take in the breathtaking glaciers and wildlife from the privacy of our own balcony. Plus, the extra space was a lifesaver with two energetic kids! That said, the verandah can be surprisingly windy, which isn’t ideal on a “glacier day” when it’s extra cold.

From our experience, when deciding between oceanview vs. verandah staterooms, we’ve found it helpful to consider factors like the itinerary, the length of the cruise, and how much time we plan to spend in our room.

On shorter trips where we’re busy with ship activities, an oceanview stateroom has been more than enough. But for longer voyages or scenic destinations, we’ve found that splurging on a verandah is well worth it for the extra space and private outdoor views.

For example, during themed Disney Cruises like “Halloween on the High Seas,” which our kids absolutely loved, there was so much to do that we barely spent time in our room!

The Bottom Line: Oceanview vs. Verandah

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to choosing between an oceanview and verandah stateroom. Both options have their merits, and the best choice depends on your budget, itinerary, and personal preferences.

If you’re still unsure, consider these final thoughts:

  • Oceanview rooms are a great “middle ground” between inside and verandah staterooms.
  • Verandah rooms offer more flexibility and can enhance your overall cruise experience.
  • Remember to factor in any cruise line promotions—sometimes, you can snag a verandah for close to an oceanview price!
  • Consider splitting the difference on longer cruises by booking a few nights in an oceanview and a few in a verandah.
  • For more helpful hints, see our Best Disney Cruise Ship for Kids , How to Save on Disney Cruises , and the Best Time to Take Disney Cruises .

Remember, no matter which stateroom type you choose, you’re in for a magical experience. From enjoying the delicious Food on Disney Cruises to participating in exciting onboard activities, your cruise vacation will be filled with lasting memories.

At first glance, the Mickey Mouse cocktail looks like a milkshake, but don’t be fooled: this sugary treat has a grown-up twist. In addition to ice cream and cookies, the Mickey Mouse cocktail has a generous serving of vodka, as well as some white chocolate liqueur. Don’t forget to leave two cookies aside to form the signature Mickey ears.

  • The Mad Hatter Martini

Mad Hatter Martini Pinterest 1

Alice In Wonderland is a fun party theme, and this Mad Hatter martini would be a great drink to have at a Wonderland event. In terms of flavor, the Mad Hatter martini has a slightly tropical vibe, incorporating coconut and pineapple ingredients. The yellow from the pineapple juice and the blue curacao liqueur combine to form a classic shade of Mad Hatter green.

  • Princess Aurora Cocktail

Princess Aurora Cocktail

Everyone loves a pink drink, and it doesn’t get pinker than this Princess Aurora cocktail. Inspired by the pink version of Aurora’s dress—apologies to the fans of the blue version—this vodka-based cocktail uses several ingredients to get a gorgeous pink color, including raspberry liqueur and pink food dye. The recipe also calls for edible glitter, reminiscent of the three fairies.

  • Princess and the Frog Cocktail

Princess and the Frog Cocktail

This Baby Yoda cocktail is adorable and would be a great surprise for the next time your friends visit. The recipe gives you instructions on how to turn your drink into a Baby Yoda using brown paper, blueberries, and lime slices.

  • Alice’s Looking Glass

Alice’s Looking Glass

Alice’s Looking Glass will certainly give you a good time at a party. Taking inspiration from the color scheme of Tim Burton’s Alice Through the Looking Glass, the drink consists of three Jell-O shots: purple, orange, and green. Present the Jell-O in a tall cocktail glass and top it with whipped cream for a festive appearance.

  • Cinderella Cocktail

The Cinderella cocktail in this recipe captures the Cinderella aesthetic with its stunning blue color and classy presentation in a martini glass. You can make this drink using vodka and blue curacao. • Elsa’s Frozen Cocktail

Elsa's Frozen Cocktail

Whether it’s the holidays or a regular chilly evening, you can add some magic to your winter with Elsa’s Frozen Cocktail. The recipe is essentially a Long Island Iced Tea that’s turned electric blue due to the inclusion of blue curacao. This boozy beverage isn’t for the faint of heart, but if you feel like you need to let it go one night, this is a great drink to have on hand.

  • Finding Dory Fruit Punch

Finding Dory Fruit Punch

You can make this Finding Dory Fruit Punch recipe alcohol-free or with some liquor added. Made with a few fruit juices (raspberry Sunny D gives it a nice ocean blue color), this drink is satisfyingly simple. The orange sugar on the rim is a cute nod to clownfish.

  • Kuzcotopia Cocktail

Kuzcotopia Cocktail

This recipe for a Kuzcotopia cocktail—an homage to Emperor Kuzco from The Emperor’s New Groove —is surprisingly complex for a Disney-themed drink. The pisco-based beverage has a wide range of specialty ingredients, such as pepper bitters and Aperol. This cocktail looks quite impressive when served in a themed martini glass, regardless of whether or not you’re a fan of early 2000s animated films.

  • The Tinkerbell

The Tinkerbell

Serve this Tinkerbell cocktail at your next Disney or fairy-themed brunch party. Taking a page from the classic mimosa, this cocktail consists of champagne, pineapple juice, and lemonade. To cut through some of the sweetness, the recipe also recommends some Angostura bitters. The main attraction, though, is the edible sparkles that will make your drink appear to be filled with pixie dust.

The Belle

Folks who enjoy limoncello will have a lot of fun with the Belle cocktail, vodka, limoncello, and raspberry liqueur concoction. This drink is well-balanced, with a subtle sweetness that doesn’t overwhelm the citric tartness. If you want to make the Belle theme more explicit, you can add a relevant garnish, such as rose petals.

  • Cruella Daiquiri

Cruella Daiquiri

Cruella De Vil is a classic Disney villain that you can’t help but love. The Cruella Daiquiri has all of the upscale taste you would expect from the fashion mogul. Making the drink itself is easy since it is a basic daiquiri recipe. However, to get that cool dalmatian effect, you will have to carefully apply dots of black food dye to the inside of the glass before pouring in the white liquid.

  • Maleficent Cocktail

Maleficent Cocktail

All you need to make a yummy Maleficent cocktail is some vodka, raspberry liqueur, lime juice, and sprite. However, if you want a fantastical cocktail worthy of the Disney brand, you should also add the recommended purple food coloring and edible glitter. The resulting drink looks like a cloud of Maleficent’s magic powers.

  • Deadpool Shot

Deadpool Shot

These Deadpool shots are a super cool idea for a Marvel-themed party. The drink primarily has a strawberry flavor, featuring both strawberry vodka and strawberry liqueur. These shots will stand out just as much as Deadpool’s edgy humor thanks to the mysterious black absinthe that floats on the top of these drinks.

  • The Lightsaber

The Lightsaber

The Lightsaber is a blue cocktail made with mezcal and blue curacao. If you like sweet and creamy drinks, you’ll appreciate the inclusion of creme de cacao. For the Star Wars theme, you’ll have to hunt around for an integral party supply: a toothpick shaped like a lightsaber.

  • Spiderman Cocktail

Spiderman Cocktail

This Spiderman cocktail uses relatively simple ingredients, but it does require some skill and careful attention to make it properly. When you make a layered cocktail, you’ll have to pour the section in slowly and gingerly, ensuring that the layers do not mix. For this vodka and grenadine drink, use crushed ice to help keep the elements separated.

  • The Ironman

The Ironman

With an eye-catching color gradient and orange sugared rim, the Ironman cocktail is a great signature drink for any superhero party. This cocktail is a little high in alcohol and contains vodka, rum, and tequila, so if you want a lighter beverage, you may want to swap out one of the liquors for more mixers.

  • Captain America Cocktail

Captain America Cocktail

A Captain America cocktail is equally well-suited for a Fourth of July party as it is for a superhero-themed event. Evoking the red, white, and blue popsicles one would get as a child, this layered cocktail incorporates sweet flavors, such as coconut and raspberry. You can also get some colorful sprinkles to decorate the rim for extra pizazz.

  • The Pacific Breeze Moana

The Pacific Breeze Moana

Poison Apple

This Poison Apple cocktail is an allusion to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and can serve as a dramatic drink for any Halloween party. • Mermaid Lemonade

Mermaid Lemonade

For a drink that gives off some Little Mermaid vibes, consider this mermaid lemonade recipe. The glass is playful and fits the mermaid theme, with maybe a mermaid tail design or sea-inspired decorations. The background features a beautiful beach scene with clear blue waters, white sands, and a clear sky, enhancing the magical and refreshing vibe of the Mermaid Lemonade cocktail.
