Hybrid-electric boats in the fjords of Norway

Our ships Brim & Bard are designed and built with two main philosophical pillars in mind: the guest experience and minimising pollution. This has resulted in what Brim Explorer is today. Providing a comfortable, unobstructed and ‘front-row’ experience for all our guests, while at the same time operating eco-friendly tours with hybrid-electric boats on the fjords of Norway.

The synergy and overlap of these two pillars comes to fruition nowhere better than through the silence of our electric engine. Enabling our guest to hear and experience the fjords better, while at the same time minimising pollution in the Norwegian sea and minimising disturbance and noise for marine life in the fjords of Norway.

5 facts about our (hybrid) electric ships:

  • Quiet hybrid-electric engine & propulsion,
  • Panoramic windows in the lounges on both decks,
  • Norwegian design with recycled aluminium,
  • 800 kWh battery pack. Equivalent to 10x Tesla Model S,
  • Designed with the guest experience in mind.

Good people, great tour! Adjust to how you are and makes it a wonderful experience. Wishing them well!!!!

we booked 13 tickets with fjordtours.com - Sognefjord in a Nutshell. that was a mistake. the train operator - Vy - had changed trains, thus seat reservations were changed. fjordtours.com never notified us of the change. we put our luggage and sat down on our original reserved seats in car 8. there were other passengers who said they have our seats. it was confusing as we thought our seats were double booked. one passenger told me that Vy had sent her an email notification about the train change and reassigned seats. i sent an email to fjordtours.com, and got a response that our new assigned seats would be in car 2. why couldn't they let us know in advance instead of 30 minutes after our departure, which had created completely unnecessary chaos onboard? i asked fjordtours.com why we weren't notified? their response? "I hope you have found your seats by now. This is an issue caused by the train operators own reservation system, and it is impossible for us to follow up all customers way ahead. The mistake/changes may happen in between when you made the booking, and the day of travel, so informing everyone is both very time demanding and may even be wrong information we give, since we do not know when this mistake occurs. I hope you understand, and despite this enjoy your tour." that response was a cop out. if they cannot keep their customers updated just like the train operator could, then they shouldn't be in the business to begin with. it was challenging for a group of elderly passengers (between 69 and 80 years old to move from car 8 to car 2 with luggage). both train conductors who asked us to move had apologized for the confusion and inconvenience, and both of them said that fjordtours.com was already notified via email about the train change and reassigned seats. and they said that we should be notified as well. the entire confusing and upsetting experience could have been 100% avoided if fjordtours.com made an effort in passing updates/changes from the train operator to the passengers. we sent complaints to fjordtours.com, and they never responded to resolve the negative experience.

I would be extremely cautious about booking the Norway In a Nutshell tour with Fjordtours. When we got on our initial train from Bergen to Flam, we found out that they had double booked our seats. And this was not only us, per the conductor "it has been happening all summer" due to a glitch with the ticketing system. There were several other passengers on board trying to find seats as well. He suggested that our family of 5 "just find seats wherever we can". Thus started our 5 hour journey of lugging our luggage around to different seats because of other people getting on the train with their seat assignments. What was supposed to be an unforgettable scenic ride with our family members turned into a chaotic and stressful situation. I tried to contact them multiple times to get a partial refund due to our situation, but they have been completely unresponsive.

Avoid it! It's a scam! They sell overpriced public transportation tickets, there is no signaling during transitions from one type of transport to another, and not a single employee from the company is available to answer questions. You need to rush between connections without time for a proper meal, and if you send emails, they will never reply. I had to complete the last leg in a very uncomfortable bus, and they knew about it in advance but didn't communicate the change (even after I sent an email). This completely ruined the already annoying experience of this tour. I advise you to buy the tickets on your own or pay for a proper tour. You will save a lot of money and have much more fun.

What a rip off! They overcharge you by almost 3000 krone or USD $350 for booking you on (public) transportation. They do nothing special for what you can easily book yourself. And quote fine print that is buried under some link (not on the main email) about changes and cancellations (basically they won't do either). I've never met a company who was so unhelpful and focused on keeping every last penny of what they overcharged. For Do-It-Yourself (FIY), first, you will need to decide if you are going Oslo to Bergen or Bergen to Oslo. Choosing the latter: book a train from Bergen to Voss, a bus from Voss to Gudvangen, the Flam Fjord Cruise, a train from Flam to Myrdal and a final train from Myrdal to Oslo. During peak season you'll need to book your cruise and Myrdal/Oslo trains well in advance. Watch the dates/times when you book. I do recommend you stay in Flam overnight. Flam is very beautiful and you can get an amazing dinner at Aegir Pub (if you do not stay at this hotel, you'll need to que up early and wait in line). Buy train tickets at www.vy.no and the cruise at https://www.norwaysbest.com/things-to-do/fjords/fjord-cruise-naeroyfjord/ Here are details about DIY Norway in a Nutshell: https://traveladdicts.net/diy-norway-in-a-nutshell-tour/#:~:text=The%20typical%20route%20is%20from,through%20the%20fjords%20to%20Gudvangen

Everything went great! It was comforting to know someone had our itinerary in order and that we didn't need to figure out where to go on each leg of the journey. Nice to have a car to leave items in (maybe from a purchase) and to have the flexibility to make an unplanned stop. Plus the extra bonus of someone to help wait in lines for you. Very professional, responsive, and reliable company to work with.

We did the Norway in a Nutshell tour with them and it was our favorite that we did in Scandinavia. We did the tour that started in Bergen and ended in Oslo. The entire journey was so scenic. It was really cool to be able to take so many modes of transportation. The least scenic part was probably the first train out of Bergen. Our favorite two legs were the fjord cruise and the Flam railroad. It's not really a tour in the normal sense. They just book your tickets for you. The transfers were easy to find. We did the premium boat cruise and I think it was worth it. The boat was really nice. The inside had really comfortable chairs with outlets everywhere. There was also a cafe inside and bathrooms. The outside had incredible views. We had a couple of hours to explore Flam which was really nice. We had lunch at the local brewery and browsed some of the local shops. It's a long day. We left Bergen around 8 am and didn't get to Oslo until 11 pm. Unfortunately, our last train was delayed so we got in an hour later than expected. This is an amazing tour with incredible views the entire day. It's relaxing and beautiful. I would highly recommend anyone going to Norway to do this tour!

Probably the most majestic, wonderful, and long tours I've ever done in my life. Was such an amazing experience that I honestly, couldn't recommend it enough to someone. Okay, here's the thing- it's a long day. You leave from Oslo Central Station at around 8:25am and finish up by taking a train the Bergen, Norway and arriving at around 9:15pm. In that time you take there trains, a ferry boat and one train during your travel. It's a lot, but it's beautiful. As far as the tour was concerned, it was super easy to navigate. It's a self guided tour. You'll get all your tickets prior giving you the the departure times and whatnot and you basically just follow everything through. There really wasn't a point where I was nervous about being lost or forgotten (I was traveling alone). You're going to see many of the same people with you the entire time- don't truly rely on them though, because the Norway In a Nutshell tour can be used as a hop-on-hop-off tour, so they may be going somewhere you aren't. Tip: bring some snacks and a bottle or two of water with you. It's going to be a few house before you get to Flam which is the main place where I saw any real food being sold. You're going to be hungry, and the food is expensive so it's just saving you some money. Get any window seat you can on the bus or trains. Most sides will feature gorgeous views so you won't miss out. The fjord tour from Flam is obviously the highlight and why many of us took the trip. Absolutely breathtaking. I think I took a thousand photos of the same thing. What's great about it when I was on the ferry was that it was packed so you had the opportunity to walk around, get many photos and really take everything in. Make sure to watch the cloud formations- I've never seen clouds like the ones in Norway as they kept changing and shifting. We called them "dragon clouds" because well, thy looked like dragons. The day is filled with relaxing points as you sit on the trains for awhile as the beautiful countryside passes you. It's a long day for sure, but a beautiful one. I had mixed emotions, do I rest? Do I stare out the window to take it all in? I was wiped out by the end of it. You have the option at the end to take the train back from Bergen to Oslo overnight or stay in Bergen (which is a cheaper option as the flights from Bergen to Oslo are cheap). The only negative, if there is one, is that when you get to the locations, there is isn't much time to really explore. You're go, go, go, go. If you miss the train or bus you're kind of screwed and you don't want that. It was around $300 USD for the tour and worth every single penny. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I loved every minute of it and would recommend it to anyone who is in Norway.

Photo of Erin B.

Trip of a lifetime! There are several options you can choose for your tour. We studied the website and contemplated several different variations before choosing to start in Oslo. I know that some people do this as a round trip in one day, and more power to them, but there is no way on earth I would ever do that (nor would I recommend it for anyone like me who finds long days of sitting on a train/boat/bus to be torturous). I had read several places that you could do this from Oslo to Bergen in about 12 hours but hot damn that would have really been too much sitting around and looking out windows for me, at least. Doing a round-trip to/from Oslo involves taking the night train back and slightly less than 24 hours of constant travel. Godspeed to anyone who wants to try that. As it were, we decided on a one way from Oslo to Bergen over the course of 3 days. We left from Oslo in the morning and took the train to Myrdal on day 1. This train ride was pretty interesting. You can really see the change in scenery as you go from city to county to high in the mountains. You get off the main rail in Myrdal (which is basically just a train station and nothing else) and board the next train down to Flåm. We did stop at the waterfall on the way down, however, as we were visiting in early April, it was frozen solid. Which was interesting. And I understand that during the high tourist season, there's a cheesy water dance by some woman in a costume. Can't say I was disappointed to miss that. The Flåm train was very old timey and interesting. I don't think the workers on this leg of the journey were as happy about their jobs. Since I assume they deal exclusively with tourists, they get a pass on that. We decided to spend two nights in Flåm which was phenomenal. I can certainly see how Flåm may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it was a perfect vacation within a vacation for us. It was off-season, very quiet and quaint, very peaceful and totally relaxing. On Day 3, we resumed the Nutshell tour and hopped on the fjord cruise to Gudvangen. The cruise is outstanding. You can choose indoor or outdoor seating and if the weather is even slightly decent I would highly recommend (literally) grabbing a chair to sit outside. Eventually I had to move indoors because it just got too cold, but the glass enclosure on deck was perfect because you still had decent views. When you get to Gundvagen, your bus is waiting and you head to Voss. The bus ride was somewhat underwhelming to me. Maybe because I was tired or maybe because it was such early spring that it wasn't exactly OMG SCENERY!! (A lot of snow and ice). The bus arrived in Voss and we had to board a train to Bergen. By this point it was getting dark outside and therefore, wasn't a whole lot of interesting things to see during the final train ride. Still, the train was comfy and nice. (The Bergen train station was kind of horrifying though, compared to Oslo). Overall, this was one of the best parts of our trip. A few final tidbits: We carried our luggage with us and I was initially worried about that - there is plenty of room on each leg of the trip so as long as you are a fairly light/moderate packer, you won't have a problem. Make sure you really consider the amount of travel you will have to do in one day if you decide to do a round trip. For me, 12+ hrs of train/bus/boat/train sitting would have been unbearable. If you don't mind a long day of constant travel/transferring, then you should be alright. I loved this trip because it didn't feel like a marathon since we stopped midway to both explore a bit and relax. You will need to inform the tour company if you do plan to stop when you book online. (I found much cheaper hotel prices on Orbitz as opposed to the "deals" on the Nutshell website for what that's worth). They will book your transfers accordingly. If you don't have your tickets mailed to you, you will have to physically go pick them up before you depart on your tour. They will send you the pick-up info when they confirm your reservation. Wear layers and dress warmly. You will be miserable if you are underdressed and cold. Enjoy!

fjord tours proff

Almost every stop in a Norwegian cruise is going to feature tours of the fjords from this company. However, different cities will have different experiences. This review is for the Bergen tour group. Getting on the ship is kind of a chaotic experience. There is a single, out of the way kiosk where tickets are purchased, so the line to buy winds around various buildings. However, if you've prebooked your tickets online, there are separate lines going directly to the ship. All of these lines run down the same dock, so all of the passengers bottlenecked toward the end of the pier where the entrance to the ship was. The staff struggled at times to manage the flow of people, but we eventually made it on the ship and set off. Bergen is a gorgeous city, so the tour ship heading out of the city passed through picturesque sights. The guide periodically narrated about the landscape and history of the region. We passed by a serene looking farm that was the set of an upcoming TV miniseries. The highlight of the trip was around the halfway point. We were able to pull up close enough to one of the waterfalls for one of the crewmembers to collect some water from it and allow everyone to drink. The water was clear and tasted great. We spent the rest of the trip looking for prime picture spots on the ship. Fjord trips in Norway are almost a requirement, and this trip was worth the effort to get there. Four stars for the fjords themselves, but two for the crew's handling of the boarding process balance out to an even three.

I couldn't have planned a better trip to Norway on my own. We loved the structure and assurance of the itinerary while having the flexibility to explore on our own. Travelling in January, Nordic Visitor's emergency number gave us peace of mind in case of bad weather. The hotels were excellent and the locations were very convenient to public transportation and places we wanted to visit. The excursions were fantastic. Want a stress-free adventure? Let Nordic Visitor lead the way.

Nordic Visitor made planning for the trip an incredibly smooth process. In particular, Juliana has been absolutely fantastic to work with. She went over and above to ensure we had a great trip, and we owe the success of our trip to her. She was always available for questions, guidance and was ever so responsive to anything we needed. Thank you for an incredible time, we will return to Nordic Visitor for planning all future trips in the area.

Frequently Asked Questions About Norway Fjord Tours

You may have a few questions about your upcoming tour to the Norwegian fjords, so we’ve answered the most commonly asked ones to save you time. If you want more travel inspiration then check out our Norway Travel Guide , and for booking information read our general  FAQs or our  Booking Terms and Conditions .

1. What created the fjords?

Created in the ice age, fjords were formed when glaciers retreated from land, leaving behind U-shaped valleys and steep cliffs.

2. Where are the fjords in Norway?

Norway is home to more than a thousand fjords and most of these are located on the north and west coasts of Norway. There are no fjords in Norway’s interior east coast or on its south coast.

3. What’s the best way to see the Norwegian fjords?

The fjords of Norway are must-see attractions that are renowned for stunning natural beauty. There are a variety of ways to see them, but the best way will depend on how you prefer to travel.

One of the most popular ways to see Norway is via its reliable and highly-rated railway network and picturesque Norwegian cruise routes . Everything on our tours is arranged for you, so you’ll already have your tickets and timings well in advance of your journey. Our train and cruise packages also give you a great amount of flexibility, with you choosing how much time you want in each area and where you want to add days and activities within the tour.

Another reason to travel this way is for spectacular views. You’ll get to see beautiful landscapes from Northern Europe’s highest railway the Bergen Line (Bergensbanen), and seascapes from the historic Hurtigruten coastal ferry . You can also travel the same scenic coastal route on a more modern Havila voyage .

However, if you want to discover Norway by car and drive the renowned roads such as Ørnevegen ( Eagle Road ) with its beautiful views over the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord , then a self-drive package is for you. With the independence that comes from renting a car, you can visit areas and attractions that are off the beaten path, and dine in restaurants that are further away from the city or town centres. As well as this, your package will include a detailed map of Norway with your accommodations and personalised route marked.

If you want a local guide to take you to each attraction and share their knowledge of Norway, then a small group tour could be an ideal way for you to travel. Unlike many other tour operators, we have smaller groups so that you can spend more time with your guide and don’t feel rushed at any of the attractions. These packages are also more agile as you travel on minibuses which can get you to harder-to-reach areas.

Whichever travel style you prefer, you can put your trust in your dedicated consultant to plan an amazing journey for you and look after all the bookings and logistics.

4. What are the must-see attractions in Norway's fjords?

On your adventure along Norway’s fjords, you get to enjoy the surrounding green areas, fjord villages and plenty of must-see attractions.

UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord is well-known for its beautiful mountains as well as the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil waterfalls. Named after a local folktale, the Seven Sisters waterfall is divided by separate streams that “dance” down the mountainside. The Bridal Veil waterfall drops off a cliff edge, appearing like a delicate thin veil over the rocks.

Another waterfall you should visit is 183-metre high Vøringfossen waterfall. One tip is to view it from the Måbødalen valley where you’ll get a great view of it crashing over the rocks below. This viewpoint will take some walking though, so be sure to bring walking boots and ask your travel consultant about activity levels.

If you’re a nature or geology enthusiast, then you may have heard of the Jostdal glacier (or Jostedalsbreen) the largest icecap in mainland Europe which covers nearly half of Jostedalsbreen National Park. Visit for rocky landscapes, moraines and pretty glacial rivers.

Your trip would not be complete without trips to the many surrounding towns and villages. Stop off at the Old Town of Stavanger for narrow streets and traditional 18th-century houses as well as the oldest church in Norway, Stavanger Cathedral. The charming village of Flåm is nested in Aurlandsfjord and is popular for wildlife watching and as a stop off point for the Flåm Railway .

You can find all these attractions and more in our itineraries, but if want to visit an area or sight that isn’t on the route, speak to your travel consultant to arrange this.

Want more inspiration for your trip to Norway? Read our article on the must-see attractions in Norway  or the best Norway getaways for couples .

5. When is the best time to visit the fjords?

Norway's seasons each carry different benefits that will affect the sightseeing you do, and the activities on your fjord travel wish list.

If you visit from June through August, you’ll get to enjoy the sunshine during the days and nights thanks to the midnight sun phenomena. As well as this, you can join fun activities such as bird watching and kayaking.

The winter months are colder and will require more layers, but the mountains are usually snowy and you’ll have a better chance of seeing the northern lights if you visit between September and March.

Whatever season you choose, our tours have reliable departure dates that can be reserved online.

Read our extensive guide to Norway’s seasons and when to visit, on our blog.

6. What is the best fjord in Norway?

With over a thousand fjords in Norway, it’s difficult to pick the best one. We can certainly share the most popular and well-known ones though, starting with the King of the Fjords, Sognefjord.

The deepest and longest fjord in Norway, Sognefjord stretches over 100 miles inland and is home to the famous Flåm Railway and UNESCO-listed Urnes Stave Church . Aptly named for its magnificent views and vast green landscapes, this fjord is a must-see for nature lovers. The Sognefjord in a Nutshell® route or the more popular Norway in a Nutshell® route are great ways to explore the fjord.

Home to Trolltunga, a famous rock formation and viewing point, Hardangerfjord is a perfect destination for lovers of outdoor activities and hiking. You can even walk behind waterfalls such as Steinsdalsfossen and try the cycling and hiking trails of Hardangervidda National Park.

Named after the colourful city of Trondheim, Trondheim Fjord is one of the most convenient fjords to explore. In the summer, there are plenty of car and passenger ferries that will take you to coastal towns like Kristiansund and the island of Munkholmen.

These are but a few suggestions, discover more beautiful fjords and the best way to visit them in our online guide.

7. Which fjords in Norway are UNESCO sites?

In Norway, two fjords are awarded UNESCO World Heritage status: Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord . Both sit in the western region of Norway and are 120 km apart from one another. They are awarded protected status by UNESCO for being the “most scenically outstanding fjord areas on the planet”.

8. How deep are Norway fjords?

Norway’s fjords have varying depths but the deepest fjord in Norway is Sognefjord, which measures at 1308 metres (4291 feet) from its basin to ground level. To put that into perfective, it’s the length of more than 14 American football fields or taller than 14 Statues of Liberty.

9. What airport to fly into Norway for fjords?

When travelling to Norway’s fjords,  Bergen Airport  is an ideal arrival point as it is situated on the west coast of Norway and close to the likes of Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord. However, Oslo Gardermoen Airport is the most convenient for international flights in and out of Norway and a major transport hub to the rest of Norway.

We advise that you start your tour in Oslo and travel to the fjords, as this would mean you also get to explore Norway’s capital city.

For an in-depth look at Norway’s airports and airlines, check out our travel guide on flights to Norway .

10. Can I choose my arrival date?

Yes, we have a wide range of arrival dates depending on the package and season. All our packages can be purchased online, so you can immediately see if your preferred dates are available. However, if you want to book your trip to Norway longer than a year in advance, contact our travel consultants.

11. How much can I customise my fjord tour?

The amount of customisation you can choose depends on the way you are travelling. Self-guided train and cruise and self-drive tours are more flexible than small group tours as dates are not pre-booked. Our self-drive packages are created with independence in mind, giving you the choice to spend time at the attractions you want. Similarly, our self-guided tours can be altered with extra nights along your journey.

However, for small group tours, you can personalise them by extending your stay at the beginning and end of your journey. You can also alter your trip with additional activities such as kayaking through the fjords and taking a tour of the Stegastein Viewpoint.

12. When should I book my flight tickets?

We suggest that you hold off booking your flights until you’ve received confirmation that your preferred tour is secured. Of course, you can look over flights for timings and dates. Once you’ve had your tour confirmed by your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights.

If you have any questions or if your flights have changed, you can always contact your consultant .

13. What should I pack for my trip?

The weather in Norway can change at a moment's notice, so we advise that you bring plenty of warm layers, waterproofs and accessories like a light backpack for day tours and gloves and insulated socks. You should also bring:

  • Warm jumpers or fleeces
  • Flask or travel cup
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Sensible walking shoes, boots or trainers
  • Warm socks (specifically for winter travel)

For more ideas on how to dress well for the Nordic climate, check out our convenient packing guide .

From Bergen, you have the opportunity to visit Norway’s two largest fjords, the Sognefjord and the Hardangerfjord. Guided Fjord Tours arranges day tours to several destinations in these areas daily from Bergen. We are ready in all seasons to guide you through the most beautiful landscape in the world.

Definitely recommend doing this if you don't have more time to explore the beautiful surroundings of Bregen. Norway is just amazing.

We had a fabulous trip up the fjords crew were lovely and it was managed very well and adjusted according to the weather conditions we thoroughly enjoyed the experience well worth it.

This trip leaves from close to the fish market in the centre of Bergen. The fast catamaran quickly gets you to the narrower part of the fjord where the views are simply breathtaking. We stood outside for much of the trip, but they sell reasonably priced hot drinks on board to warm you up. Highlights are the whirlpools and waterfalls at the far end at Mostraumen.

We had a great time with our tour guide Frode, he was excellent, very knowledgeable and great conversationalist. I highly would recommend this tour for anyone looking to enjoy great views and a delicious lunch.
