Disney Cruise Stateroom Guarantee – What Is It and Will It Save Me Money?

Sharing is caring!

Have you ever wondered what a Disney Cruise Stateroom Guarantee is?

You might have heard of something called a Stateroom Guarantee, or read about a GTY, IGT, OGT, or even a VGT.

What do these words and abbreviations actually mean? And can knowing about them actually save you money on your Disney Cruise?

Here is a guide to help you understand firstly what a Guaranteed Stateroom or Cabin actually is so that you can make a decision of whether it is the right option for you.

Disney Cruise Staterooms

Usually, when you book a cruise stateroom you pick a specific one. Usually, but not if you book a Disney Cruise Stateroom Guarantee.

disneywondertour

A cruise ship is not like a hotel where you book a type of room and it is assigned when you check-in. Usually, you will book a specific stateroom so you will know exactly where you will be on the ship.

However, sometimes Disney will offer Guaranteed Staterooms for select sailings.

This doesn’t happen on all Disney sailings. Guaranteed staterooms are usually offered closer to the sail dates. Disney will have assessed that they aren’t selling staterooms at the rate they wanted to, so will start to offer discounted Guaranteed Staterooms.

Many Disney cruises sell out so they will not offer Guaranteed rates.

Disneywondertowelanimal

The first decision that you need to make is which type of stateroom you want with these choices:

  • An Inside Stateroom
  • An Outside Stateroom
  • A Stateroom with a Verandah or Balcony

There are also Concierge staterooms on all Disney ships but we won’t talk about those here as you will never be offered a Guaranteed Stateroom for Concierge.

If you want to see more about the specific advantages and features of each type of stateroom on a Disney Cruise then we have put this together for you in our Disney Cruise Stateroom Guide .

Here are some abbreviations you may see:

  • GTY – Guaranteed Stateroom
  • IGT – Guaranteed Inside Stateroom
  • OGT – Guaranteed Outside Stateroom
  • VGT Guaranteed Verandah Stateroom

Why Would You Book A Stateroom Guarantee on a Disney Cruise?

Sometimes you don’t have a choice as that is all that is available in the category that you want.

However, the best reason to book a cruise stateroom guarantee is to save money .

gty cruise disney

Let’s look at an actual example with prices.

If you take a 5-night San Diego cruise leaving on 8th April 2022 we can look at how much you could save with a Guarantee Stateroom.

If you look at the prices below you will see that the “headline rates” for that sailing start at

  • Inside Stateroom $2,413
  • Outside Stateroom $2,843
  • Verandah Stateroom $3,533

gty cruise disney

If you look a little deeper and see how much the individual Categories of stateroom are, then you can see that both Guaranteed and pick your own stateroom choices are available.

The rates for an Inside stateroom start anywhere between $2,413 and $3,353. A difference of $940 for a 5-night cruise.

The difference between a Standard Inside Stateroom and a Deluxe Inside stateroom is that the Standard stateroom does not have a split bath.

So you can see here that if you are prepared to let Disney allocate a Standard Inside Stateroom you will pay $2413 instead of $3,193.

The difference between the Deluxe Inside Stateroom and the Deluxe Guaranteed is a bit unusual. Here the Guaranteed Stateroom costs more money.

The reason this is because there will always be different prices within categories. Some locations are seen as better than others. The higher up in the ship you are, usually the higher the price.

What is probably happening here is that the Deluxe Guaranteed Staterooms are in a better position on the ship. The ones where you can pick your stateroom are most probably on Deck 1.

gty cruise disney

Here you can see below the terms and conditions that you have to accept if you book a Guaranteed Stateroom with Disney Cruise Lines.

You need to be aware of the restrictions that you will accept in return for a lower rate.

The wording below is for the Guaranteed Inside Stateroom “with Restrictions”. The Deluxe Inside Stateroom – Guaranteed – is more expensive and does not have these restrictions.

gty cruise disney

Below you can see the starting rates for Oceanview Staterooms for that sailing.

You can save almost $900 if you book a Guaranteed Oceanview Room with Restrictions instead of a Deluxe Oceanview where you pick your stateroom location.

gty cruise disney

As you can see below you can save $700 if you book a Guaranteed Verandah Stateroom.

gty cruise disney

You need to note that the Category that is Guaranteed is the 7A which is the Navigators verandah. These are unique to Disney Wonder and Wish.

They have an enclosed Verandah with benches on either side. You do have access to fresh air, but the experience is very different from most of the other balconies on the ship.

So if you book a category 7A you do have to be prepared that you will be given one of these staterooms.

When Will I Know Where My Stateroom Is Located?

The whole point of booking a Guaranteed Stateroom is that you will now know where your stateroom is located when you book.

You will have to wait to find out.

But how long will you have to wait to see which exact stateroom number you have been allocated?

There is no exact answer to this, but usually, it is around 7 to 14 days before sailing.

It can be as late as the actual day of sailing so you only find out when you check-in at the port. This is rare though.

Most times you will know at least a day before and often a week or two in advance of your sailing.

Will I Get an Upgrade?

Well, it’s highly unlikely that you will.

gty cruise disney

Therefore you should never think that you will get an upgrade if you book a guaranteed stateroom.

it sometimes happens. You may book a Guaranteed Standard Inside Stateroom and get an upgrade to a Deluxe. Or even if you are very lucky an upgrade to an Outside Stateroom (although this is rare).

However, you aren’t going to book a guaranteed inside stateroom and find yourself magically upgraded to the Walt Disney Suite. Or even a Verandah!

I Need More Than One Stateroom – Should I Book a Guaranteed Stateroom?

Not unless you realize that the staterooms in your group could be very far apart from each other.

Disney Wish Staterooms

If you book more than one Guaranteed Stateroom even though they are on the same booking, you could be located in very different areas of the ship. You could have one stateroom on Deck 2 and another on Dec 7.

Having said this, Disney really does try to place you as close together as possible.

I have done this a couple of times and once we were on the same deck but 12 staterooms down the hall. Another time one was on Deck 5 and the other almost below them on Deck 4. This was fine for us as it was with my adult children, but this might not work so well for other family groups.

What If I Do Not Like the Location of the Guarantee Stateroom I Have Been Allocated?

What if after taking a chance, you don’t like the stateroom you have been allocated. You really wanted Deck 7 but you got Deck 1. You got port side but you wanted starboard.

Disney wish Staterooms

There is nothing you can do, except upgrade to a non Guarantee Stateroom, if one is even available.

The whole point of the Guaranteed Stateroom concept is that you give up the option to choose your stateroom and have one allocated to you. If you have taken the chance and don’t get the stateroom that you want, then you will have to accept it.

The only exception to this is if you can upgrade. But you will have to pay extra for this and there will be a limited selection. This would usually mean a costly upgrade payment so you can choose your exact stateroom.

Disney Dream Stateroom

Also, be aware that by the time you know what your stateroom allocation is there may be very limited options available to be booked. You will have a limited choice of staterooms as it is very possible that most are sold out at that stage. It may even be that everything is booked and you don’t change.

Always be sure when you book a Guaranteed Stateroom that you will be happy with any stateroom that you are allocated. It will save you money but it is a trade-off as you do take a risk.

Who Should Book a Disney Cruise Guaranteed Stateroom?

  • Guests who want to save money and are prepared to trade this for not booking a specific stateroom.
  • Those who will be happy with any stateroom within the category they booked.
  • Possibly have cruised before so they know their own individual needs and expectations for a stateroom.

Who Should NOT Book a Disney Cruise Guaranteed Stateroom?

  • If you are expecting an upgrade.
  • If a certain stateroom location is important to you.
  • You want your party to have rooms next to or even close to you.

The Hidden Gem of Disney Cruise Line Pricing – Guarantee Rates

The lowest prices on Disney Cruise Line voyages are typically found within the first few days after they are released, more than a year before sailing. Today we’ll look at the ins and outs of GT rates – another great way to save money on a Disney cruise for those who can’t book that far in advance.

There are many reasons why guests might not be able to make a cruise reservation early enough to take advantage of those opening-day rates:

  • Your work schedule might not allow you to reserve vacation time that far in advance.
  • Your family composition might be changing.
  • Your child’s school schedule is not yet available.
  • You’re working through a medical issue (pandemic-related or otherwise).
  • Your financial situation is in flux.

If you’re not able to book more than a year out, then one of the next best ways to save on Disney Cruise Line rates is to look for the hidden gem of DCL pricing – the Guarantee Rate. There are four versions of GTY rates on Disney Cruise Line:

  • General GTY
  • IGT – Inside Guarantee
  • OGT – Oceanview Guarantee
  • VGT – Verandah Guarantee

What do IGT, VGT, OGT, and GTY actually mean?

A little background first: When you book most hotel stays, you’re guaranteeing that you’ll have a room at the hotel. Sometimes this is a room of a particular type or configuration (a concierge suite or a king-sized bed, for example), but rarely are you booking a specific room number.

Conversely, on Disney Cruise Line, most of the time you ARE booking a specific room for your sailing – you know from the moment you place your deposit that you’ll be in stateroom 6090 , for example.

DCL Guarantee Rates are like the hotel booking situation – you’re guaranteeing that you’ll get a room, usually a room of a specific type (inside, verandah, etc.), but you won’t know exactly which room you’ll be in at the time of booking. Additionally, there are caveats associated with these fares: most guarantee rates are non-refundable, for example.

The upshot is – with a Guarantee Rate, Disney chooses your stateroom, not you. You’re sure to get at least the category of stateroom you’ve selected. You may get a better room, though this is unlikely. For some Guarantee Rates (all but the GTY), you’ll have some restrictions to your sailing. In exchange for forfeiting your room selection and accepting the restrictions, you’re likely to save money.

How is GTY different from IGT, OGT, and VGT?

GTY is not the same thing as IGT, OGT, or VGT rates. GTY is a category status, not a discount or particular price rate. When a stateroom category (such as Deluxe Family Verandah, for example) gets close to full, Disney stops letting guests choose a particular stateroom. Instead, your booking will say GTY instead of an actual stateroom number. That means you are guaranteed whatever specific category (i.e., 9C, 7A, 4B) you booked – or better.

Wait, what?

General GTY bookings are more specific than IGT, OGT, and VGT bookings. With a GTY booking, you’re picking a stateroom  category , such as 10A which is a Deluxe Inside Stateroom. With IGT, OGT, and VGT rates, you’re picking a stateroom  type, such as Inside, Oceanview, or Verandah.

With GTY, you can pick a 10A Deluxe Inside Stateroom and you will get a 10A or above. Unlike the risk you take when you book an IGT rate, you will not get an 11 Standard Inside Stateroom under any circumstances when you book a 10A GTY. As long as you are outside the penalty period, you can also make whatever changes you like to your reservation. You can change names, drop someone, change the sail date, cancel, etc. There’s no great advantage to picking a stateroom in GTY status. It’s not cheaper, and it also does not increase your odds of being upgraded.

Common Questions about IGT, OGT, and VGT rates

Are there any red flags about booking “guarantee” rates.

GT bookings are “restricted rate.” This means you cannot make changes to your reservation such as taking off a guest or changing dates. You also must pay in full at the time of booking, no matter how far into the future the cruise is. Disney is charging you a lower rate in exchange for you giving up the normal flexibility you get when you pay the standard fee. If you’re not 100% sure about your travel dates or your travel party, then booking Guarantee is not for you.

Can I request a room when I opt for a Guarantee rate?

You can make non-room-related requests such as dining times or special dietary accommodations, but you can’t make requests regarding your room features or location. If you’re passionate about the specifics of your room, Guarantee booking might not be for you.

If you happen to strongly dislike your stateroom assignment, it might be possible to upgrade your room. IF your sailing has space, and IF you get to the terminal early, and IF there are still upgrades available when you check in, just like every other interested passenger, you may be able to get a discounted upgrade in the terminal. Booking one of these rates does not leave you ineligible for these great deals. Also, if you booked an IGT and there is an OGT or VGT available, Disney will sometimes let you upgrade to the more expensive restricted rate.

When will I find out which stateroom I’ve been assigned?

Some Guarantee guests will start seeing their actual room numbers appear in their DCL accounts about a month prior to sailing, but Disney may assign your room as close as three days before you sail. I’ve sailed Guarantee several times and have usually gotten my room assignment about three weeks in advance.

Note: You won’t get an email from DCL saying “We’ve assigned your room.” You have to proactively check your account to find out your stateroom number.

How much can I save with a Guarantee Rate?

During the last week of September 2022, I looked at the December 2, 2022 7-Night Very Merrytime Western Caribbean Cruise from Galveston on the Magic for a party of two adults.

gty cruise disney

Right off the bat, you’ll see that regular rates for Deluxe Oceanview Staterooms start at $3,260 and Guaranteed Oceanview Staterooms (OGT) with Restrictions start at $2,350 – a difference of at least $910 .

The specifics of the OGT rate and its restrictions are well-documented before you check out.

gty cruise disney

If you want to choose your own stateroom instead and remove some restrictions, you’ll have more things to decide and lots more money to pay.

gty cruise disney

Also during the last week of September 2022, I looked at the October 22, 2022 7-Night Halloween on the High Seas Western Caribbean Cruise from Port Canaveral on the Fantasy for a party of two adults. If you want a verandah stateroom, the opportunity for savings is even greater. Guarantee Rate (VGT) rooms start at $2,973, while regular rate rooms at this level start at $4,135 – a difference of $1,162.

gty cruise disney

To be fair, the Guarantee Rate room you end up in might be slightly inferior to one you would have chosen yourself. The verandah might have an obstructed view, a slightly smaller footprint, or you might be on deck other than the one you prefer.

On the other hand, your most ideal of all possible rooms could cost even more. To reserve a specific Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah on Deck 10 midship, you’ll have to pay at least $4,947 – or $1,974 more than the Guarantee Rate. That’s a huge chunk of change that could be used for port excursions, adult dining, and spa time. Or it could be the difference between going on vacation or not going on vacation.

More Questions About Guarantee Rates

Saving thousands of dollars sounds AMAZING! Why doesn’t everyone book with Guarantee Rates?

As enticing as these rates sound, they’re not for everyone. Here are some reasons:

  • Guarantee rates typically start coming online at 3-4 months before sailing. If you’re 100% set on going on a particular sailing, you might not want to wait that long to book.
  • Not all sailings will offer Guarantee rates. If a particular sailing is a strong seller, they might not need to have Guarantee rate offerings.
  • You have a strong preference for niche stateroom type. For example, I have a friend who often travels with her adult child with autism. When sailing on the Dream or Fantasy, she likes the Category 8A Oceanview rooms that have two TVs and a large single bathroom that gives her extra space to help bathe her child. There are very few of these unique rooms and she won’t leave getting one up to chance.
  • You need a wheelchair-accessible room. If you need a room with particular accessibility accommodations, then you can’t leave stateroom selection up to chance.
  • You have motion sickness issues. Some guests swear that lower-deck midship staterooms are best to ward off motion sickness. If you want to be sure of getting this location, don’t leave it up to chance.
  • You prefer a unique stateroom feature. For example, some staterooms on Deck 5 of the Dream have huge verandahs. If sitting on your verandah is your cruising highlight, then you may want to lock in that particular selection
  • You’re traveling with a large party. For example, if you’re traveling with a family reunion taking up a dozen staterooms, you may want them all to be near each other and thus want to choose your location.

Guarantee Rates sound appealing. Should I just book my sailing now, or wait for a Guarantee rate?

Again, if you have the opportunity to book a year or more in advance, those rates will likely be your most economical option. If you didn’t plan this far in advance, you can periodically look at how full your sailing is. If you see loads of availability five or six months out, and you’re willing to gamble a little, you might want to wait a bit to book. Guarantee Rates are typically offered 60-90 days before a ship sails, occasionally sooner. If your sailing still has a ton of stateroom categories and choices available as it gets close to final payment date, there’s a decent chance that a GT rate will be offered.

I booked a sailing and now I see that my room category has cheaper Guarantee Rates available. Should I rebook?

Maybe. Maybe not.

If you’re outside the payment penalty period, you can rebook and apply whatever amount you’ve already paid to a new booking. If you’re inside the payment penalty period (which is the most common time when you’ll see Guarantee Rates offered), then you have some math to do. You’ll likely have to pay a penalty for canceling your existing reservation and rebooking at the lower rate. You might lose your deposit, or substantially more than your deposit if you rebook.

I’m still confused by all this. What can I do?

An experienced travel agent can walk you through all your options with any DCL booking, including one with Guarantee Rates. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need assistance.

What Is Stateroom GTY On Disney Cruise

Introduction

Going on a cruise vacation is an exciting and memorable experience. One of the key aspects of planning a cruise is selecting the right stateroom. Disney Cruise Line offers a unique accommodation option called Stateroom Guaranteed (GTY) that can add a level of excitement and surprise to your trip.

Unlike traditional stateroom bookings, where you can choose a specific room category and location, opting for a Stateroom GTY allows Disney Cruise Line to assign you a stateroom closer to your sailing date. This means that you won’t know the exact location and category of your stateroom until just before your departure.

While this may sound unconventional, the Stateroom GTY option offers several benefits and can be an excellent choice for some cruisers. In this article, we will explore what Stateroom GTY is, how it works on Disney Cruise Line, and the pros and cons of opting for this accommodation option.

What is Stateroom GTY?

Stateroom GTY, short for Stateroom Guaranteed, is an accommodation option offered by Disney Cruise Line. It differs from the traditional stateroom booking process because you do not select a specific stateroom category or location when making your reservation. Instead, you are guaranteed a stateroom of a specific category and minimum amenities, but the exact room assignment is left to the discretion of the cruise line.

When you opt for a Stateroom GTY, you choose a specific category, such as an Inside, Oceanview, or Balcony stateroom, but you do not have control over the exact room number, deck, or location. This can add an element of surprise and adventure to your cruise experience.

It’s essential to understand that the Stateroom GTY option does not mean you will be upgraded to a higher category stateroom. Instead, it allows Disney Cruise Line to allocate rooms based on availability and optimize the ship’s occupancy.

Keep in mind that Stateroom GTY options may vary by cruise line and itinerary. Disney Cruise Line typically offers Stateroom GTY on select sailings, and the availability is limited. It’s always recommended to check the cruise line’s official website or consult with a travel agent to determine if Stateroom GTY is an option for your specific cruise.

How does Stateroom GTY work on Disney Cruise?

Once you have booked a Stateroom GTY on a Disney Cruise, the process works as follows:

  • The cruise line will assign you a stateroom of the category you selected. You will receive your stateroom assignment shortly before your sailing date.
  • Your stateroom will meet the minimum requirements of the category you chose. For example, if you opted for an Oceanview stateroom, you will be guaranteed a stateroom with a window or porthole to provide a view of the ocean.
  • The exact location of your stateroom could be anywhere within the category you selected. It could be on any deck, forward or aft, or in a central location. The assignment is determined based on availability and at the discretion of Disney Cruise Line.
  • Disney Cruise Line will not entertain specific requests for stateroom location or adjacent staterooms when you book a Stateroom GTY. This is because the cruise line assigns rooms based on availability and occupancy optimization.
  • It’s important to note that there is a possibility of receiving a room upgrade when you book a Stateroom GTY. While not guaranteed, it can happen if there are cancellations or changes to the original bookings. However, it’s essential to have realistic expectations and not count on an upgrade as part of the Stateroom GTY experience.

Overall, Stateroom GTY offers a sense of anticipation and surprise, as you won’t know the exact location and details of your stateroom until just before your cruise. It’s a unique way to add a bit of adventure to your vacation while enjoying the same amenities and services offered to all guests onboard.

Pros and Cons of opting for Stateroom GTY

Choosing a Stateroom GTY on a Disney Cruise has its advantages and disadvantages. Let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons:

  • Potential cost savings: Booking a Stateroom GTY often comes with a lower price tag compared to selecting a specific stateroom. This can be appealing for budget-conscious cruisers looking to save some money while still enjoying a fantastic cruise experience.
  • Surprise and adventure: Not knowing the exact location of your stateroom until close to your sailing date can add an element of excitement and surprise to your vacation. It can be thrilling to discover your accommodations onboard and explore the ship from a different perspective.
  • Optimal use of ship occupancy: Stateroom GTY allows the cruise line to optimize the ship’s occupancy by assigning rooms based on availability. This can be beneficial for guests who prioritize a lower cost or are flexible with their stateroom preferences.
  • Lack of control over location: Opting for Stateroom GTY means surrendering the ability to choose the exact location and deck of your stateroom. This may not be ideal for guests who prefer a specific area of the ship or have preferences for being close to certain amenities.
  • Potential for undesirable room placement: While Disney Cruise Line aims to provide comfortable accommodations, there is a possibility of being assigned a stateroom in a less desirable location, such as near high-traffic areas or noisy sections of the ship. However, keep in mind that undesirable placements are relatively rare.
  • Inability to request specific room features: When choosing a Stateroom GTY, you cannot request specific features or amenities, such as an adjoining room or a specific bed configuration. The cruise line assigns rooms based on availability and their discretion, which may not always align with your preferences.

Ultimately, the decision to opt for a Stateroom GTY comes down to personal preferences and priorities. If you’re seeking cost savings and an element of surprise, and you’re flexible with room location, a Stateroom GTY might be an excellent choice. However, if having control over your stateroom’s exact location and features is essential to you, it’s advisable to book a specific stateroom category instead.

Is Stateroom GTY the right choice for you?

Deciding whether Stateroom GTY is the right choice for your Disney Cruise experience depends on your personal preferences and priorities. Consider the following factors to determine if it aligns with your needs:

Flexibility:

Opting for Stateroom GTY requires a certain level of flexibility. If you are open to being surprised by your stateroom assignment and are not particular about the exact location or features of your accommodations, then Stateroom GTY can be a great fit. It adds an element of adventure and excitement to your cruise.

For those looking to save some money on their cruise, Stateroom GTY can be an attractive option. It often comes with a lower price tag compared to selecting a specific stateroom category, allowing you to allocate your budget towards other aspects of your vacation.

Room location:

If having control over the exact location of your stateroom is important to you, then Stateroom GTY may not be the ideal choice. Keep in mind that while the cruise line aims to provide comfortable accommodations, you won’t have the ability to request specific deck placements or proximity to specific amenities. If being in a certain part of the ship is crucial, booking a specific stateroom category would better suit your needs.

Adventure and surprise:

If the excitement of not knowing your stateroom assignment until close to your sailing date appeals to you, Stateroom GTY can offer a sense of adventure. Exploring the ship from a different perspective and discovering your accommodations onboard can add a unique touch to your cruise experience.

Ultimately, the decision to choose a Stateroom GTY or not depends on your individual preferences and priorities for your Disney Cruise. If you value flexibility, potential cost savings, and the thrill of surprise, then Stateroom GTY could be the right choice for you. However, if having control over the exact location of your stateroom and specific room features is essential, you may prefer to book a specific stateroom category instead.

Opting for a Stateroom GTY on a Disney Cruise can be an exciting and cost-effective choice for those seeking a touch of adventure and surprise in their vacation. By relinquishing control over the exact location and features of your stateroom, you open yourself up to the possibility of enjoying potential cost savings and the joy of discovering your accommodations onboard.

While there are pros and cons to consider, such as the lack of control over room placement and the potential for undesirable locations, Stateroom GTY can be a fantastic option for cruisers who prioritize flexibility and are open to unexpected experiences. The potential for room upgrades further adds to the allure, although it is important not to count on them as guaranteed.

Before deciding on a Stateroom GTY, it is essential to reflect on your priorities and preferences. If having control over your stateroom’s location and specific features is crucial to you, booking a specific stateroom category may be a better fit. However, if you are willing to embrace surprise, enjoy potential cost savings, and have an adventurous spirit, then Stateroom GTY can be a thrilling choice for your Disney Cruise.

Remember, it’s always advisable to check with the cruise line or consult with a travel agent to gather the most up-to-date information and determine the availability of Stateroom GTY for your desired sailing date. With careful consideration, you can make the right choice that aligns with your vacation goals and ensures a memorable and enjoyable Disney Cruise experience.

  • GTY stands for ‘guarantee’ and guarantees a room in a specific category.
  • GTY staterooms offer flexibility and potential savings.
  • There is no control over room location or specific room features with GTY staterooms.
  • Booking a GTY stateroom requires flexibility and planning.

Understanding the Acronym GTY

So, you’re probably wondering what in the world ‘GTY’ means on a Disney Cruise Line, right? Well, let me break it down for you: GTY is actually short for ‘Guarantee.’

When you book a GTY stateroom, it means that you are guaranteed a room in a specific category or higher, but you won’t know the exact room number or location until closer to your sailing date.

There are advantages and disadvantages to choosing a GTY stateroom. On the positive side, you may receive an upgrade to a higher category without paying the higher price. This can be a great way to save money and enjoy a better room. However, the downside is that you have less control over your room location and specific amenities.

Exploring the benefits of GTY staterooms, let’s dive into the perks of this option.

Exploring the Benefits of GTY Staterooms

Discover the incredible advantages of choosing a GTY stateroom on your Disney cruise, allowing you to enjoy a flexible and exciting experience onboard. When you choose a GTY stateroom, you have the flexibility to let Disney Cruise Line assign your stateroom any time before your sailing date. This means you may receive a higher category stateroom than what you originally booked, at no additional cost! Upgrade opportunities like this are just one of the many benefits of choosing a GTY stateroom.

To give you an idea of the potential upgrades, take a look at the table below:

With these flexibility benefits and upgrade opportunities, choosing a GTY stateroom truly enhances your Disney cruise experience. In the next section, we will delve into how GTY staterooms work and the process behind them.

How GTY Staterooms Work

Get ready to learn how GTY staterooms work and experience the excitement of letting Disney Cruise Line assign your stateroom before your sailing date. Understanding GTY reservations is essential when considering the advantages of GTY staterooms.

With a GTY reservation, you are guaranteed a stateroom within the category you select or better, depending on availability. This means that you may receive an upgrade to a higher category stateroom without any additional cost.

Disney Cruise Line assigns staterooms based on availability closer to your sail date, allowing for flexibility and potential savings. By choosing a GTY stateroom, you have the opportunity to enjoy a better stateroom than you initially booked, enhancing your cruise experience.

Now, let’s delve into the flexibility and savings that come with GTY staterooms, and discover even more benefits.

Flexibility and Savings with GTY

When you choose a GTY stateroom, you’ll enjoy flexibility and potential savings, allowing you to enhance your cruise experience.

The flexibility advantages of a GTY stateroom mean that you don’t have to select a specific room category when booking your cruise. Instead, you will be guaranteed a room within the category or higher, depending on availability. This gives you the opportunity to potentially receive a complimentary upgrade to a higher category stateroom, providing you with even more luxurious accommodations.

Not only does this add to the excitement of your cruise, but it also offers cost-effective options for those who are open to different room locations. By choosing a GTY stateroom, you can take advantage of the flexibility and savings it offers, creating a memorable and enjoyable cruise experience.

As we explore the potential upgrades with GTY, you’ll discover even more ways to make your cruise extraordinary.

Potential Upgrades with GTY

Little did they know, choosing a GTY stateroom could potentially lead to a downgrade instead of an upgrade. While there are potential upgrades that come with a GTY booking on a Disney Cruise Line, it’s important to consider both the benefits and drawbacks.

One of the main benefits is the possibility of being upgraded to a higher category stateroom at no additional cost. This can be a great way to enjoy a higher level of luxury without having to pay the full price. However, it’s important to note that there is also a chance of being downgraded to a lower category stateroom if there is limited availability. This is something to keep in mind when making the decision to book a GTY stateroom.

Moving on to the availability and limitations of GTY…

Availability and Limitations of GTY

Keep in mind that availability and limitations of GTY staterooms can greatly impact your cruise experience, so it’s crucial to consider all factors before making a decision.

When it comes to availability, GTY staterooms are usually offered when the ship is close to sailing and all other stateroom categories are sold out. However, it’s important to note that the number of GTY staterooms is limited, and they are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Additionally, there may be restrictions associated with GTY staterooms. For example, you may not have the option to choose your exact stateroom location or bed configuration. Furthermore, GTY staterooms are typically non-refundable and cannot be changed once assigned.

Considering these availability and restrictions, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons before opting for a GTY stateroom.

In the next section, I will provide helpful tips for booking a GTY stateroom without sacrificing your preferences.

Tips for Booking a GTY Stateroom

One helpful tip for booking a GTY stateroom is to research the average upgrade rate, which is around 70% according to industry experts. This means that there’s a high chance of being upgraded to a higher category stateroom when you book a GTY. However, it’s important to keep in mind that there are both advantages and disadvantages to booking a GTY.

One advantage is that you can often secure a lower price compared to booking a specific stateroom category. This can be a great option if you’re flexible with your accommodations and don’t have any specific preferences. Additionally, booking a GTY can also be exciting as you never know what kind of stateroom you’ll be assigned.

On the other hand, a disadvantage of booking a GTY is that you won’t have control over the exact location or specific features of your stateroom. This may not be ideal if you have specific needs or preferences, such as wanting a stateroom near certain amenities or with a particular view.

With these advantages and disadvantages in mind, let’s dive into some frequently asked questions about GTY staterooms.

Stateroom Categories: Explained

It’s just as simple as booking a stateroom, right? As you start to shop for your next cruise, options abound and seriously confuse. Let’s make some sense of ‘all that is stateroom’ on Disney Cruise Line.

There are four general stateroom categories : Concierge, Oceanview with Verandah, Oceanview and Inside . Within each category and within each ship, there are different options to choose from.

Inside (Categories: 10, 11)

  • Located on the Interior of the ship
  • No exterior views *Dream/Fantasy “Magic Portholes”
  • 169-204 sqft

Oceanview (Categories: 8, 9)

  • One large or two small portholes
  • Exterior/ocean views
  • 204-241 sqft

Verandah (Categories: 4, 5, 6, 7)

  • Private balconies
  • Floor to ceiling windows
  • 246-299 sqft

Concierge (Categories: V, T, S, R)

  • Suites with balconies
  • Some with separate living/sleeping areas
  • 306-1781 sq ft
  • Concierge services

There are now  six stateroom types : Standard, Deluxe, Deluxe Family, Deluxe Family Concierge, 1- or 2- Bedroom Suites, Royal Suite. Your family size and space preferences typically play a major role in selecting stateroom type. Listed below are the stateroom type differentiators:

Standard (Inside Category: 11)

  • Traditional bathroom

Deluxe (Inside Category: 10, Oceanview Category: 9, Verandah Category: 5, 6, 7)

Deluxe Family (Oceanview Category: 8, Verandah Category: 4)

  • Sleep up to 5

Deluxe Family Concierge (Concierge Category: V)

  • Concierge service

1- or 2- Bedroom Suites (Concierge Categories: S, T)

  • Split living/sleeping
  • Large balconies

Royal Suite (Concierge Category: R)

  • Each ship has 2
  • Luxurious, spacious
  • Large balcony with private whirlpool tub (Dream and Fantasy)

What’s the difference between a Category 4A and 4E? The letters A, B, C, D, and E generally distinguish where on the ship the staterooms are located, with the letter A being the most desired location, for example, midship on a higher deck.

Navigator Verandah’s Category 7A

The Magic and Wonder category 7A staterooms only sleep 3

The Fantasy and Dream category 7A’s sleep 3-4

But what about this Category 8A on the Dream & Fantasy? There are 12 of these rooms on each ship. These are different as they are larger than the average Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom, have a split room set-up BUT no split bath .

gty cruise disney

Just to keep things interesting, there are a small number of very specific stateroom categories boasting distinct features:

Obstructed/Limited Ocean Views: These rooms have portholes with – you guessed it – partially obstructed views. These rooms are less expensive than their unobstructed-viewed counterparts. Found: Oceanview Category 9C and 9D on the Disney Dream/Fantasy

Oversized Verandah Rooms: Extra balcony space and people rave about these staterooms in our Facebook group discussions. Found: Verandah Category 4E and 5E on the Disney Dream/Fantasy

Navigator’s Verandah: Enclosed verandah with open air porthole. Found: Verandah Category 7A

Whitewall Verandah: The verandah has a solid white wall from deck to railing instead of the standard clear view throughout. Found: Verandah Category 5E, 6A, 6B

Booking with Restrictions? We Got You

IGT = Inside Stateroom with Restrictions OGT = Outside Stateroom with restrictions VGT = Guaranteed Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah

When booking these restricted-fare category staterooms, please note the following:

  • New bookings only. Existing reservations cannot be modified to these new categories.
  • You are reserving a stateroom within the selected stateroom type: Inside, Oceanview or Verandah*.
  • Disney Cruise Line will assign your specific stateroom at a later time, based on remaining availability.
  • Specific stateroom requests will not be accommodated.
  • Full payment is required at the time of booking for all Guests and is non-refundable.
  • Sail date and stateroom category changes are not permitted.
  • The stateroom offer cannot be combined with any other discounted or promotional offer.
  • Full legal names of all Guests are required at time of booking and no name changes are allowed.

* Most Verandah staterooms include a private verandah with a clear plexiglass wall; some may include a solid white wall depending upon location. A limited number of Oceanview and Verandah staterooms may include a partially obstructed view.

Selecting “Choose Guaranty” guarantees the ship, sailing date and rate. A Category XXX stateroom will be assigned by the time documents are received. Selecting “Choose Guaranty” does not guarantee the stateroom will be on a particular deck or, for multiple staterooms, that the staterooms will be located near each other.

GTY reservations have no restrictions as it is a normal booking. Same rules apply as they do to any booking that has an assigned stateroom.

**Also note that you can be assigned an accessible stateroom without a split bath.

What Is GTY And Should I Book It?

I’ve had this question many times over the years – “What does GTY mean?” or “What is a guaranteed cabin?”  Simply put, GTY or guarantee just means that you are booking either a certain type of room or minimum category of room on a cruise.  There are two times where this will happen.

First is when you book a particular category on a ship and all of the room numbers have been assigned.  Cruise lines know that everyone who books a particular date will not actually sail on that particular date.  They want to fill up the ships however.  After years of filling up cruises, they have a pretty good idea of the percentage of reservations that will cancel before the cruise date.  Once all the room numbers have been taken, they feel comfortable selling a certain percentage of rooms above the total number of rooms in a category.  Once that number is hit though, the category is sold out.  So what happens if they guess wrong and not as many people cancel their reservation?  The rooms that can’t be assigned within a category will be upgraded to a higher category, for no additional cost.  This doesn’t mean if you received a GTY assignment that you have a better shot of getting an upgrade than someone who got a stateroom assigned.  The cruise line could say Family A (with an assignment) booked a long time ago so we will offer them an upgrade and give Family B (with a GTY) their current stateroom.

Rooms of this sort are generally not reduced in price.  Yes, you are taking a risk that you’ll get a room that you aren’t happy with but you could get an upgrade.

The second type of GTY is a guaranteed room type.  Generally speaking this is inside, ocean view or balcony.  For these you will book a guaranteed room type and you could be assigned a room in any of the categories of that same type.  A guaranteed inside will mean you will get an inside cabin – any inside cabin, but it is not likely you would get an ocean view or balcony.

These rooms are discounted, many times not coming available until much closer to the cruise date.  There can be restrictions with these rooms as well.  With Disney Cruise Line, the restricted guaranteed staterooms cannot be put on a courtesy hold.  You must have all the correct names, dates of birth, etc. at the time of booking.  Name changes are not permitted and full payment is due at the time of booking.  The reservation is non-refundable.  These can be great deals when you are sure of your travel plans.

I know that some people have a problem with discounts like these coming out after the final payments are due as they are not able to take advantage of the discount if they booked far in advance.  The reason that you book far in advance is to get a lower price than most, guarantee your room location and assignment and get started on the planning.  The discounted rates are used to fill up the ships.  These are really for last minute planners.  Be aware that some cruise lines will not allow you to get a better rate if one comes available once you have booked.  Many will not allow you to cancel and rebook as well.

With most GTY assignments, you have little recourse to get a new room assignment once your room is assigned.  You should only book a room that is on GTY if you are willing to accept what you get assigned, regardless of where it is on the ship.  Additionally, you may not receive your assignment until very close to sailing.  With the first type of GTYs, I have seen room assignments around 30 days or more prior to a sailing.  With the second type, I have seen it go until a day or two before the sailing.

What is a “Guarantee” (GTY) Stateroom or Cabin on a Cruise?

Written by Julie Wright . Posted in Did you know? , General , Tips , Uncategorized

ATTENTION: This blog was recently updated with new information in August 2019.

A Guarantee Stateroom or Cabin is an unassigned room on a ship. It can be the perfect choice for some people, but you need to know the difference between an unassigned room and an assigned room. Being informed of your cabin means there are no surprises when you board the cruise ship.

Cruise lines use this technique to manage their stateroom inventory. They guarantee you’ll have a stateroom in the desired category but wait until close into the sail date to actually assign you a cabin. This way they have the option of assigning you a cabin that hasn’t been previously booked. It’s very much like when you arrive at a hotel to check into your reserved room. You know the type of accommodation you’ll get, but not the actual room number.

An assigned stateroom is exactly what it sounds like. You get to choose a specific cabin from the ship’s deck plan, and claim it for your cruise. You’ll almost always pay more for an assigned stateroom, but in some situations, it’s more than worth it.

What are the advantages of booking an assigned room?

There are lots of reasons why someone would want an assigned stateroom. Families traveling together in more than one cabin may want to be in close proximity to each other for obvious reasons; If purchased early enough connecting staterooms may even be available. Some people like being on higher decks so they use the stairs and elevators less often. Some want to be close to the elevators, others don’t. Some prefer one side of the ship versus the other. Some like the middle of the ship so it’s an equal distance walk to anywhere on any deck. It’s all about personal preference and that list of preferences could go on and on.

What are the advantages of booking a Guarantee Stateroom?

If you like to know you’ve secured the absolute lowest stateroom fare for your cruise vacation, then reserving a Guarantee Stateroom may be the right choice for you. Even though you won’t know your actual stateroom assignment until shortly before the sail date, you will be guaranteed a stateroom of equal category or better than what you paid for. That means you could get an upgrade, but don’t let that be the reason you book a guarantee. It will be a nice surprise if you do but the best reason is that you get to save money. Your accommodations will be exactly the same in size and amenities as if you’d paid more for an assigned room. The cruise lines simply reward you with a lower price for giving them the flexibility to manage their inventory.

So if the location of the room you stay in isn’t important because you plan to spend your time on the deck, at the spa, restaurants, shows, casino, lounges, activities or exploring the ports-of-call – then get a guarantee stateroom.

Last Minute Cruises can sometimes be the cheapest cruise deal.

Sometimes, but not always, the cheapest cruise deal is a Last Minute Cruise. You won't get a wide selection of stateroom categories or a chance to select your stateroom location but if your schedule is flexible you just might find a cheap cruise price on a last minute cruise. Last minute cruises are cruises leaving in the next 90 days. The cruise line really wants to fill those last few staterooms and sometimes will offer them at a discount cruise price in exchange for you giving up your right to a full selection of cabin categories or deck locations. What is a guarantee or "We Pick" stateroom and how does it work?

At times we may offer you the option of making a ‘Guarantee’ (GTY) booking. This means you may book a stateroom of a guaranteed category type (Interior, Oceanview, Balcony or Suite) on your chosen ship and cruise.

However, the exact stateroom, number, and location of the stateroom on the ship will be allocated by us (at our discretion) and at any time up until checking in at the port.

Guests booked in GTY cabins may not be berthed with other travelling parties due to availability. Staterooms allocated may be subject to obstructed views.

Please note that on Oasis & Icon Class ships, you may be assigned a Neighborhood View Balcony stateroom  (Central Park, Boardwalk or Surfside) . These staterooms are assigned based on availability.

Such promotional GTY categories are defined as follows:

  • WS       Suite/Deluxe
  • XB        Balcony Stateroom
  • XN        Neighborhood View Balcony Stateroom (Oasis & Icon Class Only)
  • YO        Ocean View Stateroom
  • ZI          Interior Stateroom

For back-to-back cruises, please note: If you book 2 or more cruises to be taken consecutively and either one or all cruises are booked under a GTY basis, you may be allocated different staterooms on each cruise, therefore necessitating the need to move between staterooms on the changeover day between your consecutive cruises.

I only book a Disney cruise if it's going to the company's private island, Castaway Cay

  • I've taken eight Disney cruises, and I always book a sailing that stops at  Castaway Cay .
  • Castaway Cay is the company's private island and I love its adults-only beach area.
  • You can buy exclusive merch on the island and see Disney characters in special themed costumes.

Insider Today

Cruise bookings are predicted to reach record highs this year, but not all itineraries are created equally — especially if you're looking to sail with Disney Cruise Line.

Over the past decade, I've taken eight Disney cruises with my family and friends. When I book, I always make sure Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay, is on the port of call.

Here's why you might want to do the same.

I love that the ship docks right at the island, so there are no tender ships involved

One of the biggest perks of Castaway Cay is that the ship docks right at the island.

Some other cruise line's private islands, like Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay, don't have a dock, so cruisers must take tender ships (small boats) from the cruise ship to the island.

I hate taking tender ships, which can feel like a bit of a time sink, so this is a big bonus to me.

Getting around the island is easy with the complimentary tram

Castaway Cay is about 1,000 acres — though not all of it's developed — so it can take a while to talk to and from the ship to different spots on the island.

Fortunately, the island has a complimentary tram that I always use to get around the island.

The tram takes cruisers from a station near the ship to two other tram stops for the family beaches, and one tram stop at the adults-only beach .

This makes getting around the island with all of my beach gear easy.

Related stories

Speaking of gear, at Castaway Cay, cruisegoers can borrow free towels as soon as they get off of the ship. There are plenty of towel-return stations around the island, so I also never have to carry wet, sandy towels back on the ship.

I always stop to see the Disney characters in their cute beachwear

I enjoy seeing the Disney characters on the ship, but love seeing Mickey and his pals even more at Castaway Cay.

Characters usually meet in the morning from around 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., but exact times can always be found on the Disney Cruise Line app.

The best part about seeing the characters is that the lines to take pictures with them are never long. On a recent sailing, I saw Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Pluto all in 30 minutes. That would never happen in a Disney park.

And if you're a fellow character hunter like me, Mickey and the gang all have Castaway Cay exclusive outfits, which are adorable and make for great family photos.

I always take advantage of every chance to hang out at the adults-only beach

One thing I love about Disney Cruise Line and Castaway Cay is that there are plenty of adults-only spaces where kids are strictly not allowed. On the island, that spot is Serenity Bay Beach.

This peaceful chair-lined beach is a quiet spot away from the family beach, where I can sit back and enjoy the view or take a chair down to the water and let the waves crash over me.

Plus, just off Serenity Bay Beach is a fun beachside bar serving up drinks and snacks.

There's also the adults-only lunch spot where I always enjoy a beachside barbecue. My favorite things on the lunch menu are the ribs and macaroni salad .

Before returning to the ship, I send a postcard from the island and check out the special merchandise

I always make a point to stop in at the various shops near the family beach to see the Castaway Cay merchandise. On a recent trip, the shops had everything from spirit jerseys and T-shirts to Christmas ornaments and swimsuits.

And, before I head back to the ship, I stop at the Castaway Cay post office to send postcards back home.

The postcards I use can be found in the desk drawer of Disney Cruise Line staterooms, and are free to take. If you don't want to send the cute postcards off, you can also keep them as souvenirs.

Disney Cruise Line Employee Faces Child Pornography Charge

Tirso Neri, 44, was charged with possession of pornography and transportation of child pornography.

Broward County Sheriff's Office

A Disney Cruise Line employee faces criminal charges on allegations he possessed child sex abuse material.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security took Tirso Neri, 44, of the Philippines, into custody at the Port Everglades port in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Monday.

He has been charged with possession of pornography and transportation of child pornography, per a federal criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE.

Neri worked on the Disney Dream ship.

According to the complaint, authorities discovered sexually explicit photographs and videos of young children on two of his cellphones: a Samsung Galaxy and an Oppo smartphone.

The child sex abuse material was found in December after the ship docked in Fort Lauderdale. The cruise started in the Bahamas.

Authorities discovered on the Samsung a folder “titled with the name of an apparent victim that contained numerous sexually explicit pictures and videos of an Asian girl who appeared to be under 18 years of age,” per the complaint.

Authorities said the folder appeared to have been downloaded around August 2019.

Neri told authorities that he belonged to several social media chat groups and had downloaded adult pornography.

However, when authorities asked Neri about folders found on the Samsung phone that allegedly contained child sex abuse images, Neri claimed “sometimes he obtains folders in the chat groups and saves them to his phone without looking at them and then deletes them after,” per the complaint.

Authorities said they conducted forensic examinations on the phones and found numerous images of child sex abuse material on Neri’s Oppo smartphone, including videos “that were saved in a folder titled ‘Private.”

“In accordance with our zero-tolerance policy for this kind of alleged behavior, this individual is no longer with the company,” the Disney cruise line told PEOPLE in an emailed statement.

It is unclear if he has entered pleas or retained an attorney.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual abuse, text "STRENGTH" to the Crisis Text Line at 741-741 to be connected to a certified crisis counselor.

Pregnant Woman Evacuated From Disney Cruise Ship

The US Coast Guard has released dramatic footage of the moment a pregnant woman was airlifted from a Disney cruise ship after suffering "health complications".

A MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter was filmed landing on the bow of the Disney Fantasy ship that was sailing 180 miles northwest of Aguadilla in Puerto Rico .

The coastguard said in a statement: "The medevac patient was a 35-year-old pregnant woman, US citizen, who experienced health complications and required a higher level of medical care ashore."

In a video shared on social media, a member of the helicopter crew is seen attaching the stretcher to a rope which is then hoisted, lifting the passenger into the aircraft.

The pregnant passenger was taken to Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, where emergency service personnel were waiting, the US Coast Guard said.

She was later transported to the Centro Medico Hospital to receive treatment.

"Our crew was able to quickly, safely, and efficiently execute a long-range medevac for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required," Lieutenant Commander Todd Stephens said.

"This case demonstrates the value of good crew resource management and the capabilities of our Jayhawk helicopter."

Ensign Michael Riccio, the coastguard's leader for the case, added: "We are glad everything came together to help this passenger."

Third Disney Cruise Line crew member arrested on child pornography charges

gty cruise disney

A third Disney Cruise Line crew member was arrested Monday on child pornography charges.

Law enforcement found sexually explicit pictures and videos of minors on two phones belonging to Tirso Neri, who was working on the Disney Dream. The material featured both teenagers and young children, according to an affidavit signed by Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Eric Stowers.

Neri, 44, told investigators that he downloaded and bought links for files containing adult pornography via group chats on Telegram and Facebook Messenger. When asked about folders on one of his phones, including one that depicted sexually explicit images of a 17-year-old girl, he said he must have saved it to his phone without looking at it after receiving it in one of the group chats.

A further forensic examination showed that files in the folder had been viewed by the phone’s user, according to the document. Law enforcement also found numerous other folders “titled in the names of various females.”

Neri, who is a citizen of the Philippines, is charged with transportation of child pornography and possession of child pornography.

“In accordance with our zero-tolerance policy for this kind of alleged behavior, this individual is no longer with the company,” the cruise line told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. An attorney listed for Neri did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sexual assault on cruises: Reported incidents rose last year, according to federal data

The news comes after two other Disney Cruise Line crew members were arrested on child pornography charges in January. A cruise ship dancer was arrested on similar charges earlier this month, but law enforcement did not specify what ship he was working on.

Weddings? Burials at sea? Unexpected things you can do on a cruise ship besides cruising

When thinking of a cruise , we generally imagine sailing away for a relaxing vacation of sun and fun. Lots of food, perhaps a drink with an umbrella in it and the magnificent ocean.

We're lucky in Florida, home to some of the world's busiest cruise ports including PortMiami, Port Canaveral , Port Everglades, Port Tampa Bay, JAXPORT, and Port of Palm Beach. There is also a port in Key West, but this is mainly used for cruise ship calls rather than a homeport.

Most people know cruises offer a great value and are nearly all-inclusive with good food , accommodations and entertainment. Add to that exotic ports of call and shore excursions that strike all fancies, from beach bums to adrenaline junkies.

But there are some lesser-known accommodations available on most cruise ships .

From joyous occasions to celebrations of life, here are some extraordinary services cruise ships offer.

You can get married on a cruise ship

Want to say "I do" onboard a majestic ship or at an exotic location?

You can do that on a cruise ship and be on your honeymoon at the same time.

Many cruise lines, including Disney Cruise Lines , Carnival and Royal Caribbean , offer weddings and wedding renewals aboard the ship or at scenic tropical locations.

Your guests don't even have to cruise with you.

For example, 50 non-sailing guests can take part in weddings aboard Carnival Cruise Line ships before the cruise sails from the port of embarkation.

Royal Caribbean allows for 75 of 150 wedding guests to be non-sailing. NCL permits up to 10 non-sailing guests free of charge, but a reception must be booked if you have up to 50 guests who are not sailing.

Check with your cruise line for availability and details.

Burial at sea: Scattering a loved one's ashes from a cruise ship

A loved one's remains can be buried at sea during a cruise.

Several cruise lines allow for the scattering of cremated remains from their ships, provided the guest can produce the decedent's death and cremation certificates.

The remains are generally required to be in a biodegradable urn and some cruise lines require the entire urn to be tossed into the sea.

Cruise lines work with guests to determine burial time and place. Guests are usually taken to a more secluded part of the ship and given privacy for scattering the remains.

Contact your cruise line before boarding for availability and policies.

Cruise ships have jails. Can you get arrested on a cruise ship?

While there are a lot of perks for traveling via cruise ship, there are some facilities available on most cruise ships that may surprise you.

For example, many cruise ships have a small jail, called a brig. The brig is generally located on one of the bottom decks.

Misbehavior or breaking the law on a cruise ship can see you confined to your cabin or locked up in the brig.

Do cruise ships have hospitals?

Most cruise ships sailing from U.S. ports have medical facilities, including a doctor, on board to treat minor illnesses and injuries, and to stabilize patients with more serious health issues until they can be transferred to land-based facilities.

While available, medical care on a cruise ship is not free . Your land-based health insurance is generally not accepted on board and medical service fees are charged to your sailing account.

Your health insurance may not cover you while you're on the ship and out of the country. Check with your provider before boarding and look into travel health insurance for concerns over recouping any out-of-pocket costs.

Is there a morgue on cruise ships?

Morbidly, yes, there's a morgue on board. It's legally required , according to Readers Digest .

In case of a death, the body is stored in the morgue until it can be transferred off the ship.

GTY with restrictions

Cool Cruiser

I have a question about guaranteed rooms with restrictions, so that I know whether it’s something I’d consider or not.

I’m perfectly happy with having a room assigned to me - we stayed in an inside room on the Magic last year and loved our trip, so I’m not too fussy. I’m thinking of a GTY verandah - I’d be happy with white wall / navigator’s verandah, and all the verandah staterooms are on convenient decks. We’d be looking at the Magic again, so it’s not like you’re ever far from anything, even if you’re right at the front / back of the boat.

I’m also happy paying in full on booking, but I’m just worried about losing our money if we were unable to travel, eg if we were denied boarding after testing positive for covid. Does the Disney refund policy for covid-related issues still apply to GTY with restrictions, or do those bookings mean no refunds under any circumstances?

What if we had to cancel for any other unavoidable reason, eg serious illness other than covid? Would good quality travel insurance cover you in that instance? I have a great annual worldwide travel policy which ticks all the usual boxes and more, but I’m not sure what to look for in the T&Cs to see if they’d cover us having to cancel a non-refundable booking. Are they likely to tell us we shouldn’t have booked non-refundable and refuse to pay out?*

*Hopefully we’d just be able to get on our cruise as planned and none of this will ever matter. Covid has just highlighted how quickly and easily everything can go wrong for people.

First, let's clear up this:

GTY - that's a booking made of a specific category guarantee (for example, 6A GTY).  These are made available once a certain percentage of rooms within a category have been booked.

*GT - last minute, restricted fares.  Must pay in full at booking, non-refundable.

The current DCL COVID policies will refund even the *GT bookings if a person is denied boarding due to COVID.

Travel insurance polices may or may not cover COVID cancellations.  They *usually* will cover most illness related cancellations.  You must check the policy you wish to purchase (or already have) to see what's covered.

Oops, sorry, I’ve just realised it was a VGT that I was looking at. It’s only a vague idea at the moment - never considered it before and I clearly haven’t wrapped my head around the correct terminology yet!

That’s really useful (and good) to know about DCL’s covid policy. Being turned away would be horrible, but even worse if they kept your money too.

My insurance does cover covid issues including cancellations as well as other illnesses etc, but I actually meant to ask about whether it would cover me for a non-refundable booking if we couldn’t travel for one of those other covered reasons. (I don’t think I’m explaining my question very well.) As I mentioned, I do have a great worldwide annual travel insurance policy which ticks all the usual recommended boxes / amounts and more, including cruise travel, but I just don’t know what to look for in the policy to see if non-refundable bookings are covered. I suppose it’s really the same as having to cancel any booking that incurs cancellation fees, and I know those would be covered - I think I’m just overthinking it all, and worrying that they’d say ‘non-refundable’ means you’ve waived your right to claim on insurance.

I'm not an authority, but travel insurance (for cancellation purposes) would/should cover regardless of whether the original reservation was non-refundable.  The idea is to recover what you would be out should you not be able to take your trip due to (whatever) covered circumstances.

  1. Disney Cruise Stateroom Guarantee

This doesn't happen on all Disney sailings. Guaranteed staterooms are usually offered closer to the sail dates. Disney will have assessed that they aren't selling staterooms at the rate they wanted to, so will start to offer discounted Guaranteed Staterooms. Many Disney cruises sell out so they will not offer Guaranteed rates.

  2. The Hidden Gem of Disney Cruise Line Pricing

  5. What does 'GTY' mean???

GTY is short for Guarantee. Some guests book a stateroom without knowing the exact room number, which is called a "Guarantee", because Disney guarantees that it will be in the category the guest pays for or better. This is a nice way to book a room if a guest is not too particular about the location of the stateroom.

  6. What Does Gty Mean On Disney Cruise Line

After delving into the world of GTY staterooms on Disney Cruise Line, it's clear that this option offers incredible flexibility and savings for passengers. 7. Choosing Cruise Ship Rooms: What is a GTY Cabin?

This method of designating rooms is the technique cruise ships use to manage their stateroom inventory. 12. What Is GTY And Should I Book It?

Simply put, GTY or guarantee just means that you are booking either a certain type of room or minimum category of room on a cruise. There are two times where this will happen. 15. Does someone know how GTY staterooms work?

Shmoo here said: Once a certain percentage of rooms within a specific category are booked, the category goes GTY (guarantee). You can still select the category, but you cannot select a specific room. DCL will assign a room of AT LEAST the category you've booked or better at a later date. Most GTY bookings get the category room they've booked.
