Hilton For The Stay

Go Hilton Team Member travel program

Booking a go hilton stay.

Eligible Team Members and their authorized family / friends must each log in at the Go Hilton booking site with their own Hilton Honors sign-in and password to manage their own reservations.

Tips for Finding Go Hilton Rates

Use the flexible dates feature.

  • Search for a 1-night stay and click the 'My dates are flexible' box, which will let you see rate availability day-by-day in a calendar view for each hotel you select.
  • Ex: If you searched for 3 nights, but only 2 of the nights have the discount available, the search would come up empty. If you do a 1-night search and use flexible dates, you could see availability day-by-day and see the discount for 2 of the 3 nights, which you could book separately if needed.

Mix and match rates

  • Ex: Team Member rate might be available for 1 night and not the next, but the Family & Friends rate might be available for the other night.
  • If searching for 2 rooms doesn't work, try searching for only 1 room as there may be only one room available at the discounted rate on that particular night.

Be flexible

  • Try to book as far in advance as possible to take advantage of all potential availability. If you don't find what you're looking for right away, come back often. Go Hilton rate availability is based on forecasted occupancy, which can change frequently.
  • More rooms might become available closer to the desired stay date, especially within 60 days of arrival, since stay dates farther out in the calendar may be more limited and are often booked quickly.
  • Consider searching for popular destinations during various seasons or nights of the week when availability may be more plentiful.
  • Plan trips around when you find availability for the discounted rates.

Checking in & staying with Go Hilton Rates

  • Team Members must be present at check-in and for the duration of Team Member rate and Family & Friends rate stays booked in their name and Hilton Honors account.
  • Authorized family and friends must be present at check-in and for the duration of Family & Friends rate stays booked in their name and Hilton Honors account.
  • Non-Team Members, family/friends, etc., cannot use Team Member rates.
  • Authorized family/friends can travel without the authorizing Team Member when staying under their own Family & Friends rates, but the family/friends do need to make their own reservations by signing into the Go Hilton booking site with their own Hilton Honors account.

Number of rooms per stay

  • For each hotel stay, eligible Team Members may reserve up to 2 Team Member rate rooms and 2 Family & Friends rate rooms, for a total of up to 4 rooms in their own name and Hilton Honors number.
  • Team Members’ approved family / friends may reserve up to 2 Family & Friends rate rooms per hotel stay (family / friends must make their own bookings with their own Hilton Honors account).
  • "Extra” Team Member and “Extra” Family & Friends rates are combined with and treated like “regular” Team Member and Family & Friends rates for the maximum number of rooms per stay.
  • Program users may not book rooms for themselves at different hotels for the same stay dates regardless of the rate booked.

Number of nights per stay

  • Eligible Team Members can book up to seven consecutive nights at Team Member rates and up to seven consecutive nights at Family & Friends rates.
  • Approved family/friends may book a Family & Friends rate for seven consecutive nights.

Annual allotment of room nights

  • Each eligible Team Member can book and / or use up to 30 room nights per calendar year under Team Member rates and up to 70 room nights per calendar year under Family & Friends rates, for a total of 100 room nights per calendar year.
  • Each room counts as 1 room night.
  • Usage of Family & Friends room nights by approved family / friends counts against the 70 Family & Friends room nights total.
  • "Extra" Team Member rates and "Extra" Family & Friends rates do not count against the annual room night allotments.

Hilton Honors Points, stay credit, & hotel benefits

Go Hilton Team Member and Family & Friends rate stays are eligible to earn Hilton Honors Points on both room rates and incidentals and stay credit toward the next tier status, based on Hilton Honors terms and conditions. Hilton Honors members are eligible for all standard Hilton Honors hotel benefits when staying under Go Hilton rates, including room upgrades at check-in based on tier status and hotel availability.

Hilton Honors Relocation & Recovery (Walk Policy)

Occasionally, a hotel may find itself in an overbooked situation. All Go Hilton Team Member and Family & Friends rate reservations in such situations are to be honored as any other reservation for a Hilton Honors member; Hilton Honors Relocation & Recovery policies apply the same to Team Member and Family & Friends reservations as to any other reservation type for overbooked situations. The guest should be relocated to another local hotel within a reasonable distance with all the usual Hilton Honors walk benefits based on the guest's tier status.

Code of Conduct

  • Eligible participants traveling under the  Go Hilton travel programs are bound to the Hilton Code of Conduct. Eligible Participants are expected to embody Hilton Values and uphold the exceptional reputation of Hilton during every stay at member properties. Eligible Participants will be held accountable for any undue duress placed on the hosting property. Behavior inconsistent with program rules and our HILTON Values may result in loss of these privileges and disciplinary action, up to and including termination. Family and Friends of Eligible Participants who use the Family & Friends Travel Program are also a reflection of the Eligible Participant. Any inappropriate behavior by Family and Friends may also result in loss of these privileges for the family/friend and the Eligible Participant.
  • Access to Go Hilton discounts may not be sold, auctioned, bartered, brokered, purchased, or otherwise transferred.  Any Go Hilton discounts obtained in this manner will be considered to have been fraudulently obtained and deemed void, resulting in cancellation of the reservations.  This applies to Go Hilton Team Member rates and Family & Friends rates. All such activity is strictly prohibited and will result in loss of Go Hilton privileges for the applicable Team Member and/or Family & Friends and can also result in disciplinary action for the Team Member, up to and including termination. Such fraudulent activity will also lead to closure of the applicable Hilton Honors accounts and forfeiture of any Hilton Honors Points, stay credits, or other related rewards associated with those accounts.
  • The following actions will be taken by the Program for any Hilton Honors members who are fraudulently added to a Team Member's Family & Friends list and/or who fraudulently book or use a Team Member's Family & Friends rate room nights without the Team Member's knowledge and consent:  their Go Hilton / Family & Friends rate reservations will be cancelled by the Program; their Hilton Honors account will be closed; and they will forfeit any Hilton Honors Points, stay credits, or other related rewards associated with that Hilton Honors account. The Program will monitor such fraudulent Hilton Honors members going forward, and such fraudulent activity on any new Hilton Honors account the members open will lead to the same treatment as above on the new accounts.
  • Team Members should inform all family and friends they authorize to use the program of the Go Hilton Code of Conduct and all Program Rules.

Hilton

Business Wire

MCLEAN, Va.--( BUSINESS WIRE )--Hilton today debuted Hilton for Business , a new, digital-forward travel program that empowers professionals running small- and medium-sized businesses to simplify travel management while enhancing rewards and discounts for their loyalty.

The global program offers a comprehensive set of tools to enhance the business travel booking and management experience and provide Hilton Honors benefits to business customers and their employees around the world.

Hilton for Business answers a growing need: Hilton data uncovered 75 percent of small- and medium-sized business customers book their own business trips and manage their own travel in-house, without outsourcing. And Hilton’s 2024 Trends Report spotlighted that 80% of global travelers agree that it’s important to be able to book their entire trip online.

“At Hilton, we listen to the needs of our customers and then innovate to provide a superior hotel experience for every stay occasion. This includes our small- and medium-sized business customers who have been looking for a travel platform – and loyalty benefits – that meets their unique set of needs and reduces friction points, from booking to billing,” said Chris Silcock, president, Global Brands and Commercial Services, Hilton. “We’re thrilled to officially launch Hilton for Business today as our strategic solution to enrich the business travel experience for these customers and their employees.”

Small- and medium-sized businesses are now able to discover a more seamless and value-driven business travel experience by engaging with Hilton for Business in the following ways:

Portfolio-wide Discounts

Small- and medium-sized businesses that join Hilton for Business gain access to discounted rates across Hilton’s global portfolio of nearly 7,400 properties both on the website and on the Hilton Honors app.

Travel Rewards for Small Businesses and Their Employees

Through this program, companies will earn milestone bonuses through Hilton’s award-winning loyalty program, Hilton Honors . These include:

  • Companies that enroll in Hilton for Business will receive 7,500 Hilton Honors Bonus Points after any program member completes their first hotel stay.
  • After every 10 nights stayed by a program member, the company receives 5,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points. Those Bonus Points are housed within the business’ company account and can be used to distribute to themselves and/or any member of their Hilton for Business program.
  • Individual travelers, including both owners and employees, will continue to earn their personal Hilton Honors Points and benefits each time they stay.

Rapid Onboarding

When visiting Hilton.com/HiltonforBusiness , small- and medium-sized business owners or travel administrators can register themselves and their companies, through their own Hilton Honors account, to gain access to a comprehensive, and easy-to-use, self-service travel booking and management system. Understanding the frustration many customers have around long and complicated enrollment processes, Hilton for Business registration was built to enable a quick enrollment and verification process. Once registered, the customer and their employees gain access to the booking website and other compelling benefits. At that stage, individual travelers will also be able to create separate personal and business travel profiles within their own Hilton Honors account, enabling seamless differentiation and management between the two profiles.

Seamless Program Management

In addition to enabling any traveler at a company to easily book discounted rates, business owners have full control and can delegate program management to any number of administrators. And adding employees is straightforward – the more employees included in the program, the more benefits the company earns. Businesses can track their upcoming spend, review historical spend, and understand the benefits accumulating as they travel.

Hilton rolls out booking and travel perks for smaller businesses

Cameron Sperance

Hilton's plan to boost its appeal to smaller companies took a big step forward this week with a new global booking platform that can net companies bonus Hilton Honors points.

The hotel giant debuted Hilton for Business, a travel program geared toward small and medium-sized businesses that likely book and manage their own business travel plans. The platform offers members room discounts and Hilton Honors bonus points to the business company account while individual travelers continue to earn points and elite status nights on their personal Hilton Honors account.

This is a signal of just how serious Hilton takes travel demand from smaller companies, as discounted rates for business travel are usually something reserved for large contracts with some of the world's largest companies.

It was not made public if the discounts for small and medium-sized businesses are in the same ballpark as those afforded to large corporations.

"At Hilton, we listen to the needs of our customers and then innovate to provide a superior hotel experience for every stay occasion," Chris Silcock, Hilton's president of global brands and commercial services, said in a prepared statement. "This includes our small- and medium-sized business customers who have been looking for a travel platform - and loyalty benefits - that meets their unique set of needs and reduces friction points, from booking to billing."

The program was first piloted last fall with select customers before its official rollout this week.

How to sign up

A business owner or travel administrator can head to this page on the Hilton website to sign up for the program with their existing Hilton Honors account. The registration process will ask for details like your company's email domain, website and mailing address. As of publication time, I was able to qualify for Hilton for Business pretty easily.

We reached out to Hilton to see if there are other qualifiers, like forming a limited liability company. A company spokesperson noted Hilton is "using a number of criteria and data sources to validate small businesses."

Once you're registered, you'll have access to a portal that tracks annual spending with Hilton, upcoming stays and the total points balance of your company's profile. You'll also have access to a link to share with employees so they can join your company's Hilton for Business program and have access to benefits.

Business owners or travel administrators with access to a company's main account can also transfer points held in the company account to individual employees linked up to the Hilton for Business program.

The benefits

Hilton's main travel perks for signing up for Hilton for Business include 7,500 Hilton Honors bonus points for a company account after any program member completes their first hotel stay.

After every 10 nights stayed by a program member, the company account receives 5,000 Hilton Honors bonus points. As mentioned, those points can then eventually be used from the company account or transferred to any program member within that company's Hilton for Business account.

Hilton also notes that there will be discounts for businesses that sign up for Hilton for Business. A trial search we ran for random nights this winter in Boston indicated there were numerous blackout dates, and there weren't any significant discounts showing relative to those received by just being a regular Hilton Honors member.

Once we looked into dates in March, the Hilton Boston Back Bay in Boston showed a Hilton for Business rate of $324 per night compared to most rates for individual Hilton Honors members starting slightly higher at $334 per night. There was, however, a cheaper non-refundable, advance payment rate of $315 for Hilton Honors members willing to take the risk and lock in.

The Hilton spokesperson didn't provide many details on just how strong the Hilton for Business rates were compared to negotiated rates larger companies enjoy. Further, we still didn't get a full picture of how consistent the discounts would be.

"Discount availability is at the discretion of each property; however, one of the benefits of the Hilton for Business program is last room availability at our hotels around the world," the spokesperson said via email.

Keep in mind that while Hilton is offering bonus points for business owners in this new program, it isn't offering much in the way of immediate loyalty status. For that, your best option is to apply for a credit card that offers immediate Hilton Honors elite status, such as the Hilton Honors American Express Card , which comes with Silver status. You could also apply for the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card , The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card , The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express for Gold status.

You can immediately acquire top-tier Diamond status with Hilton Honors by opening the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card .

The information for the Hilton Honors Aspire Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

This is surprisingly good travel news for Hilton fans and Hilton Honors members who own a smaller business requiring them to travel. Small and medium-sized companies are often left out of the business of corporate travel perks with special rates.

Hilton leaders have repeatedly noted since the worst months of the coronavirus pandemic that there's an increased interest in boosting demand from small and medium-sized companies. The thinking here is larger corporations have the luxury of relying on remote work and video conferencing, which cuts down on the need for in-person visits and travel.

So-called road warriors who need to be on the road for on-site visits are more likely to be found at smaller companies. That's far more reliable revenue for hotel owners and hotel companies like Hilton than corporate travel from bigger businesses that have lagged in recovery.

Prior to the pandemic, Hilton had a split in its total business travel demand where 80% came from small and medium-sized businesses while the remaining 20% stemmed from larger companies. Hilton CEO Christopher Nassetta has noted in recent years a desire to morph that into a 90-10 split, where small and medium-sized businesses gain an even larger share of Hilton's business travel pie.

"With roughly 80% of our typical corporate mix coming from small and medium-sized businesses and with the lagging recovery of larger corporate travel, we've taken the opportunity to continue our further increase our focus on this segment of demand," Nassetta said on an earnings call in late 2021. "This demand is higher rated [and] more resilient, which has helped us to recover more quickly in business transient and should drive rate compression in the future as larger corporate travel picks up."

More recent data indicates the initiative to court small- and medium-sized businesses is showing success, as these companies now account for 85% of Hilton's business travel demand.

Doing whatever one can to further appeal to those businesses can help lock in loyalty to Hilton for years to come.

ESg Strategic Framework

Travel with Purpose is our environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy to drive responsible travel and tourism globally. This framework outlines the priority areas for action within our strategy and serves as a blueprint for how we achieve our goals, organized beneath the three pillars of ESG—Environmental, Social and Governance.

Travel With Purpose - ESG Strategic Framework

TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE 2030 GOALS

In 2018, we set our ambitious Travel with Purpose 2030 Goals to hold ourselves accountable for the environmental and social progress we aim to create in our business. Our 2030 Goals closely align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and include emissions-reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and aligned with the Paris Climate Agreement.

THE DRIVING FORCES BEHIND ESG

Through Travel with Purpose, Hilton aims to redefine and advance sustainable travel by combining the power of our people, who are at the heart of this work, and a robust roster of initiatives, which serves as its backbone. Achieving our ambitious Travel with Purpose 2030 Goals will require deep collaboration and a powerful set of programs.

THE BACKBONE OF TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE

Our robust ESG management system helps track, analyze, and report our environmental and social impact at each of our hotels and corporate offices, as well as our progress. Hotel leaders can also use LightStay to identify improvement actions based on individual hotel performance and the performance of their peers for the metrics tracked in the system.

Our global procurement and supply chain arm develops relationships and negotiates with suppliers around the world to source goods and services at the best combination of price, quality, and service. HSM’s Responsible Sourcing Team helps us make progress on our sourcing goals.

Hilton works closely with partner organizations, such as World Wildlife Fund and the International Youth Foundation, that provide expertise and advance initiatives that create meaningful change for our communities and planet.

The Hilton Global Foundation supports projects around the world led by nonprofit partners and Hilton Team Members who make a positive impact on our communities. Through the Team Member Assistance Fund, HGF also supports Hilton Team Members in the aftermath of disasters or financial hardship due to unexpected personal circumstances.

The Driving Forces of Travel With Purpose

THE HEART OF TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE

It’s our incredible people who turn our commitments into a reality. Our Team Members take action each day to pursue our goals. Whether turning off unused lighting, or recycling soaps, or volunteering at a local nonprofit, there are countless ways each Team Member is empowered to operate our hotels more sustainably and responsibly.

Our owners and developers are critical partners in the advancement of a more sustainable future for the hospitality industry. They collaborate, share program feedback, help pilot new initiatives and are visionary leaders to inspire and drive environmental and social progress. Check out how one Hilton owner is setting an example for a brighter, fossil-fuel free future.

Our guests inspire us to take action so they can travel more sustainably and responsibly. We use guest feedback to shape our ESG initiatives and collaborate with customers to help them achieve their own environmental and social impact goals. Our Meet with Purpose program enables customers to achieve their goals to protect the planet and impact communities.

Each Hilton hotel operates as a hub in its community, convening community members and serving as a gateway for new visitors to the destination. Small businesses, nonprofits, local government leaders, and neighbors engage with our hotels to inform strategies that contribute to local initiatives. Hilton Corporate Discount Codes for Business & Leisure Travel

The Best Hilton Corporate Codes & Discounts (2024)

What are hilton corporate codes, how to book with a hilton corporate rate (business travel), hilton corporate discounts for leisure travel, other hotel corporate codes, faq’s about hotel corporate codes.

As a seasoned business traveler, I have used Hilton corporate codes for years to get a reduced rate when I stay at Hilton properties. These rates are commonly used by consultants and sales reps who travel extensively and work with a variety of companies, many of which have negotiated rates with Hilton.

Here is everything you need to know!

A Hilton Corporate Code is an alpha-numeric code that is used to identify the negotiated rate a company has with Hilton.  These codes are entered in a special rate field at the time of booking to determine the nightly rate a business has negotiated with Hilton.

As long as you are affiliated with the company in some way (employee, customer, vendor), you can take advantage of these negotiated rates.

Hilton has two types of corporate rates.

  • Business Travel : These discounts are meant to be used for business travel during the week (although they often work for weekend travel as well); and
  • Leisure Travel : These discounts are specifically geared toward an employee’s leisure travel.

We will explain both and provide codes and links you can use.

Discount Codes for Business Travel

Below are some of the most popular Corporate Codes for Hilton.  If you are an employee of one of these companies or will visit them for business, you can take advantage of their negotiated rates and use the code.

The codes in the “Acquired Brands” column represent codes that can be used at DoubleTree, Hampton Inn, Homewood Suites, Embassy Suites, and Home2 Suites. (Hilton acquired these brands from Promus Hotel Corporation in 1999).

The codes in the “Hilton Brands” column are associated with traditional and newer Hilton brands such as Hilton Hotels, Conrad, Tapestry, Tru, Waldorf Astoria, Curio Collection, and Hilton Garden Inn.

After all these years I can’t tell you why they haven’t consolidated the corporate codes into one code per company, but they haven’t.

The discount provided with these codes will vary from location to location and can be up to 50% off rack rates.

Consulting firms like Accenture, Deloitte, Capgemini, and IBM have a lot of consultants traveling every week so they are going to have some of the best “chain-wide” or “system-wide” discounts.

However, many large corporations have a lot of visitors traveling in to their location for meetings. In this situation, you can often get a great rate on hotels in their local headquarters vicinity – such as Proctor and Gamble in Cincinnati, Ford Motor Company in Detroit, or Harley Davidson in Milwaukee.

Hilton also offers an airline employee discount code for employees of any airline. The code for this is “AL”, regardless of the airline you work for.

You will need to enter the company’s specific code in the “Corporate Account” box for the corporate rate to apply.  This box can be found when you click on the plus sign in the lower right corner of the booking table, then click on “add special rate codes” to reveal the three special rate code options.

How to enter the Hilton Corporate Discount Codes

Enter your destination and travel dates, then add the code in the Corporate Account box.  Click the “find it” button and the hotels that are offering that rate will show up.

As long as you are affiliated with the company in some way (employee, customer, vendor), you can take advantage of the negotiated rate your company has with Hilton and save a lot of money!

An added benefit is that, unlike discounts offered through Online Travel Agents (OTA’s), corporate rates allow to save money and Hilton Honors members can receive Hilton Honors Elite Benefits , AND earn Hilton Honors Points .

In addition to the codes Hilton provides for business travel, they also have negotiated discounts with a large group of companies for their employees to use for personal travel. The discounts are not as big as the business rates, but they still offer savings off the generally available rates.

Hilton doesn’t have a special name for these rates, but it is essentially the same concept as Marriott’s Breakaway rates .

The Hilton corporate leisure rates do not have specific codes as the business rates do. Rather, each company has its landing page where you can book and the discount code will be pre-populated.

Below is a list of over 200 companies that have negotiated leisure rates with Hilton. The links in the table will take you to the company’s leisure discount landing page, which includes the specifics of its program and benefits.

Most major travel companies (hotels, rental cars, and even airlines) offer negotiated corporate rates. Here are links to the pages listing the corporate rates with each of these brands:

  • Choice Hotels
  • Best Western

What is included with a corporate rate?

Each corporate rate is negotiated separately so they often have different inclusions. Some just offer the discounted rate while others can include free WiFi, shuttle transportation to the office and flexible cancellation policies.

Will you earn Hilton Honors points?

Yes. Corporate rates are considered “qualified rates” and are eligible to earn base points as well as any bonus points associated with a Hilton promotion .

If you want to know how many points you will earn using a business rate, use our Hilton Honors points calculator to find out.

Will Hilton Honors members get elite status benefits?

Yes. As stated in the question above, corporate rates are considered “qualified rates” and are eligible to receive the benefits of your Hilton elite status .

‘hilton for business’ transforms the travel management experience for small- and medium-sized businesses.

Global Program Offers Comprehensive Booking Platform, Discounts, Loyalty Rewards and Seamless Program Management Tools

MCLEAN, Va., January 17, 2024 --( BUSINESS WIRE )--Hilton today debuted Hilton for Business , a new, digital-forward travel program that empowers professionals running small- and medium-sized businesses to simplify travel management while enhancing rewards and discounts for their loyalty.

"At Hilton, we listen to the needs of our customers and then innovate to provide a superior hotel experience for every stay occasion. This includes our small- and medium-sized business customers who have been looking for a travel platform – and loyalty benefits – that meets their unique set of needs and reduces friction points, from booking to billing," said Chris Silcock, president, Global Brands and Commercial Services, Hilton. "We’re thrilled to officially launch Hilton for Business today as our strategic solution to enrich the business travel experience for these customers and their employees."

Companies that enroll in Hilton for Business will receive 7,500 Hilton Honors Bonus Points after any program member completes their first hotel stay.

After every 10 nights stayed by a program member, the company receives 5,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points. Those Bonus Points are housed within the business’ company account and can be used to distribute to themselves and/or any member of their Hilton for Business program.

Individual travelers, including both owners and employees, will continue to earn their personal Hilton Honors Points and benefits each time they stay.

Hilton, Hyatt, and Accor Freeze Hotel Development in Russia

Cameron Sperance , Skift

March 9th, 2022 at 4:03 PM EST

Western hotel companies are still operating in Russia, but this is a notable step for an industry that has been a holdout amid all the companies ditching their presence in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.

Cameron Sperance

Major hotel companies are finally taking a stance on Russia after so many other industries suspended operations in the country after it invaded Ukraine.

Hilton and Hyatt all moved to freeze new developments and suspend investments in Russia, the companies announced Wednesday. Hilton also closed its Moscow corporate office. Accor made a similar move in recent days to suspend all planned openings as well as future developments in Russia, Skift has learned.

IHG also closed its corporate office in Moscow and suspended future investments, development activity, and openings in Russia, the company released in a statement following the initial publication of this story.

Marriott later announced following publication that it, too, would close its Moscow corporate office and pause future hotel openings, development, and investments in Russia. The company noted in a release that its hotels in Russia are owned by third parties and “we continue to evaluate the ability for these hotels to remain open.”

The move comes as the hotel industry faced scrutiny for continuing to operate in Russia after major U.S. and European companies like Airbus, Boeing, and even Starbucks and McDonald’s pulled back from Russia in recent days in light of its invasion of Ukraine. While the announcement notes the hotel companies are freezing development plans in Russia, each of these companies as well as Marriott and IHG still continue to operate hotels there.

“Our hotels have always been part of the fabric of our communities that we serve, and we take seriously our promise to positively impact the places where we live and work,” Hilton said in a release.

“We will continue to evaluate hotel operations in Russia, while complying with applicable sanctions and U.S. government directives as we hope for a resolution to this crisis,” a Hyatt spokesperson said in a statement. “Understanding that many people in Russia face challenges and uncertainty about their future as well, we are determining how best to support and care for our hotel colleagues and current guests in the country.”

“We are deeply saddened and shocked by the war in Ukraine and our thoughts continue to be with all those impacted by these horrific events. IHG has a commitment to look after the people and communities where we have a presence around the world,” IHG noted in its own statement. “We have long-term management or franchise agreements with independent third-party companies that own the hotels in Russia.”

Accor has more than 50 hotels in Russia. Marriott has 28 managed and franchised hotels in Russia, the company’s CEO Anthony Capuano said this week at a J.P. Morgan conference. Hilton has 26.

Company leaders voiced their support of Ukraine and refugees fleeing the country in recent weeks, but they have largely taken a tone of downplaying their respective presence in Russia instead of moving to vacate the country altogether.

“Those hotels represent significantly less than 1 percent of total fee volume. When we look at outbound Russian travelers, they’re meaningfully less than 1 percent of room night generation around the world,” Capuano said at the J.P. Morgan Gaming, Lodging, Restaurant & Leisure Management Access Forum this week. “There’s the human side: We are very focused on the safety of our associates and the safety of our guests in those markets. But from a materiality perspective, in terms of the company’s financial performance, [it is] not particularly significant.”

Accor continues to operate in the country in support of its 3,500 employees there and primarily to offer hotels up as shelter for members of the media as well as non-governmental organizations, according to those familiar with company thinking.

Hilton plans to donate any profits from its Russian operations to humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine. Hilton doesn’t own any of its hotels in the country, but they are still operating, even if they are a small part of the company’s overall business.

Hyatt is sending supplies to Ukrainian people and offering up hotels as refugee shelters across Europe. IHG and other brands are similarly offering up rooms to accommodate refugees and donating to various humanitarian causes assisting in Ukraine. Marriott earmarked $1 million to it’s employee relief fund to support associates impacted by the war in Ukraine and is also supporting humanitarian efforts in the region and offering up hotels to house refugees.

“We deplore the loss of life, widespread impacts to millions of innocent civilians and the humanitarian disaster in Ukraine,” Marriott said in a statement Thursday morning. “We strongly support those working towards peace and an end to the needless suffering.”

While the continued operations in Russia make the hotel industry a  notable holdout  amid the mass exodus of Western brands, hotel experts say there are a variety of financial and pro-West political reasons for why these companies might be staying.

McDonald’s temporarily pulling the plug on its 850 restaurants is a sharper stance, as it nixes food deliveries to the restaurants. But it is harder to hobble a hotel operation, experts say. There is a strong chance the owner of one of these Russian hotels would continue to operate with current branding and just find resources like bedding materials and food from a provider unaffiliated with their brand family.

“I appreciate this is not a great look for them, and I just expect there’s not an awful lot they can do about it,” Richard Clarke, a managing director covering global leisure and hotels at Bernstein said. “A McDonald’s that’s not a McDonald’s is nothing right? You can’t carry on operating McDonald’s because you need McDonald’s to supply you with the food. If Marriott stops providing you with the food, the hotel is still there. It would just be a token effort.”

There is even some Western political upside to maintaining at least some presence in Russia, Clarke added. InterContinental’s first location in Brazil wasn’t just by happenstance. U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt encouraged the chain’s founder, Juan Trippe of Pan Am, to build a chain of luxury hotels for business travelers.

“If we go all the way back as to why the first InterContinental was built, the first InterContinental was built in Brazil and partly funded by the American government because they wanted symbols of American wealth in the center of cities that they worried could convert to communism,” Clarke said. “So maybe their view is sort of saying, ‘Well, actually, there is some advantage of having a big Hyatt, a big Hilton, and a big Marriott in Moscow as this sort of symbol.”

But not everyone is buying the hotel industry’s defense that franchise agreements are why they have no choice but to maintain operations at existing hotels in Russia.

“You have termination clauses in every contract, and the strong companies always build into contracts some clauses that they can call on at anytime,” said Nicolas Graf, associate dean at New York University’s Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality. “I don’t think that’s an issue. For them, it’s about business relationships. I do believe that most of the owners and investors [of the hotels in Russia] are Russian, but some of them may also have properties elsewhere. Maybe it’s more about trying to manage these relationships as long as they can. Once they feel that there will be too much pressure, whether its brand or reputation of political pressure, then they will simply pull out like McDonald’s did.”

[UPDATE]: Following publication of this story, IHG Hotels & Resorts announced it will also suspend hotel development, investments, and openings in Russia as well as close its Moscow corporate office. Marriott made a similar announcement the morning after this story was initially published. This story has been updated.
