Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Your passport must have at least six months validity remaining from the date of entry and at least two blank visa pages.

Tourist visas are required.  Tourist visas on arrival are available at certain ports of entry, and generally permit a stay of 30 days. You can extend the visa up to an additional 60 days through the Department of Immigration in Vientiane. At certain ports of entry, you can use an eVisa. See  laoevisa.gov.la  for more information.

To obtain a visa in advance, and for other information about Lao entry requirements, please contact the  Embassy of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic , 2222 S St. NW, Washington DC 20008, tel: 202-332-6416, fax: 202-332-4923.

For a business visa:  Business visas can only be arranged in advance. After you arrive, you can generally extend your business visa for one month. Please contact the  Embassy of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic  for specific information.

You must have a valid entry stamp and be within your authorized period of stay, or have an exit visa, to depart Laos. Otherwise, you will be fined and may be arrested.

If your U.S. passport is lost or stolen in Laos, you must obtain both a replacement passport and an exit visa.  The U.S. Embassy can issue a limited validity replacement passport expeditiously; however, the Lao government requires 3 to 5 working days to issue an exit visa. Contact the Foreigner Control Office at the Department of Immigration in Nong Buek for an exit visa. The office is located on NongBuek-Dongnaxok Rd. Phone: +856 21 212 520. If your lost passport causes you to exceed your authorized period of stay in Laos, you may be subject to overstay fines unless you make prior arrangements with Immigration.

Laos does not allow its citizens to have dual nationality.  Under Lao law, Lao citizens who have been outside of Laos for extended periods or who have taken a second nationality are no longer considered to be Lao citizens. Lao immigration officials may deny entry to or exit from Laos for individuals using multiple passports.

Traveling with children:  Travelers with children are advised to have documentary evidence of your relationship to the child, such as the child’s birth certificate or permission for the child’s travel from the parent(s) or legal guardian, if they are not present.  U.S. citizen children born out of wedlock to a Lao national and a U.S. citizen may experience difficulty departing Laos.

Travelers with HIV/AIDS:  The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Laos.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction , and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

The Embassy recommends U.S. citizens reconsider travel to all of Xaisomboun   Province . U.S. Embassy personnel are restricted from traveling to Xaisomboun Province due to past incidents of violence.

There are large amounts of unexploded ordnance (UXO)   in Laos  left over from the Indochina War.  UXO is found in some parts of Savannakhet, Xieng Khouang, Salavan, Khammouane, Sekong, Champassak, Houaphan, Attapeu, Luang Prabang, and Vientiane provinces. In particular, UXO is found along Route 7 (from Route 13 to the Vietnam border), Route 9 (Savannakhet to the Vietnam border), and Route 20 (Pakse to Salavan). Never pick up unknown metal objects and avoid traveling off well-used roads, tracks, and paths.

Exercise caution in remote areas along the border with Burma.  Bandits, drug traffickers, and other people pursuing illegal activities operate in these border areas.

Find information on  Travel Advisories  on our website.

  • Petty thieves target foreigners  for pickpocketing (especially in tourist hubs) and theft of unattended property, including in vehicles. Thieves on passing motorcycles snatch purses. Petty theft increases during major Lao holidays. Residential break-ins also occur.
  • Scams:  In tourist areas, shop owners may rent motorbikes to tourists, have someone “steal” the motorbike, and charge the tourist for the cost of the “stolen” motorbike. Be cautious of rental arrangements and never provide your passport as collateral.
  • See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information on scams.

Victims of Crime:  U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance. Report crimes to police in the place where the incident took place. You may also contact the Tourist Police at 021-251-128. Tourist Police generally speak English. Contact the U.S. Embassy at 856-21-48-7000; after hours call 856-21-48-7600. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting the crime.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care;
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police;
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent;
  • Explain the local criminal justice process in general terms;
  • Provide a list of local attorneys;
  • Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the U.S. ;
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution;
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home;
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport.

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism:  Laos’ tourism industry infrastructure is very limited, especially outside major cities. Tourists participate in activities at their own risk. Emergency response and subsequent appropriate medical treatment is not available in-country. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more  information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  Laos does not routinely inform the U.S. Embassy of the arrest of U.S. citizens in a timely fashion and does not always allow consular access to arrested individuals. If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information

Police and legal system bribes and informal procedures:  It is common for police to target foreigners to pay bribes for alleged traffic offenses. The Embassy is not usually able to provide assistance in these cases. Foreigners arrested for unruly conduct or damaging private property will often be held in police custody without formal charges being brought against them until they pay an indemnity to the injured party. This process usually takes a minimum of two to three weeks.

Relationships with Lao citizens:  Lao law prohibits cohabitation or sexual contact between foreign citizens and Lao nationals except when the two parties have been married in accordance with Lao Family Law. Any foreigner who cohabitates with or enters into a sexual relationship with a Lao national risks being interrogated, detained, arrested, or fined. Foreigners are not permitted to invite Lao nationals of the opposite sex to their hotel rooms, and police may raid hotel rooms without notice or consent. Foreigners, including U.S. citizens of Lao descent, are not allowed to stay in the homes of Lao nationals, even family, without the prior consent of the village chief and local police.

Foreigners who married a Lao national outside of Laos should have their marriage certificate authenticated at a Lao Embassy in the country where the marriage took place before traveling to Laos.

Possession of, trafficking in, and manufacture of drugs are serious offenses in Laos  and result in lengthy prison sentences or the death penalty. Some restaurants offer “happy” or “special” menu items -- particularly “pizzas” or “shakes” -- that may contain opiates or unknown substances. Consuming these items is illegal.

Adventure Tourism:  Laos has a developing adventure tourism industry that includes, but is not limited to, zip-lining, bungee jumping, rock climbing, and off-road bikes and buggies. Safety standards and training requirements for personnel operating these activities and safety inspections of the equipment may not be equivalent to those required for similar activities in the United States. We recommend that travelers check the safety records of adventure tourism operators. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  adventure travel .

Water Safety:  Travel by speedboat on rivers in Laos is dangerous, especially when water levels are low. White water rafting, kayaking, tubing, and other water-based activities, including swimming in the Mekong, are dangerous. Foreigners have drowned or been seriously injured. Do not participate in any water-based activities while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Please be aware that safety advice will be minimal, and there may not be warning signs at tourist sites.

Hotel Safety:  Some hotels in Laos do not meet U.S. safety standards for security and fire safety.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See our following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report  – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report  – see country reports

  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Laos.

See   our  LGBTQI Travel Information   page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance:   There are no special provisions for persons with mobility issues.  Sidewalks and street crossings are not accessible for people in wheelchairs. Buildings, medical facilities, public transportation, etc. are generally not accessible .

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

For emergency services in Laos, dial 0192 (tourist police) or 0195 (ambulance).

Medical facilities and services in Laos are extremely limited and may not meet basic international standards.

Contact information for hospitals/clinics is found here .

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers accept only cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation. Every year the Embassy sees cases of U.S. citizens who fall ill in Laos and are unable to get necessary health care because they don’t have adequate insurance. Serious medical cases frequently require medical evacuation to private hospitals in Thailand by ground ambulance or air ambulance. Hospitals in Thailand and Laos require large deposits prior to treating patients. The State Department does not pay medical bills.

Border Crossing Hours: All of the land border crossings between Laos and neighboring countries close during the night hours. The Friendship Bridge that connects Vientiane to Nong Khai, Thailand, closes from 10 p.m. – 6 a.m. daily. While it is generally possible for ambulances to cross the Vientiane friendship bridge after hours, it sometimes takes several hours to arrange for the crossing to be opened, even in cases of severe medical emergencies. Travelers should inquire locally about the hours of other border crossings .

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure the medication is legal in Laos.

Air Quality: Visit AirNow Department of State for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:

  • Road accidents are a major cause of death.  Defensive driving is imperative; many drivers pay little attention to traffic laws.
  • Poor driving conditions:  Traffic is chaotic, and road conditions can be rough. Few roads have lane markings, road signs, and stoplights. Drivers widely ignore those that exist. Speeding, reckless passing, and failure to obey traffic laws are common. Many drivers are underage, unlicensed, inexperienced, or uninsured. Driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs is common. Motorcycles carry as many as five people, greatly impeding the drivers' ability to react to traffic. Road conditions worsen during the rainy season and landslides are common, including on major routes connecting provincial capitals.
  • Avoid driving at night . Road construction sites are poorly marked, appear with no warning, and can be difficult to see at night. Roads are poorly illuminated, many vehicles have no operating lights, few bicycles have reflectors, and trucks without reflectors commonly park on unlighted roads.
  • Motorcycles and motorbikes:  The U.S. Embassy prohibits  Embassy personnel in Laos from using motorcycles, motorbikes, and scooters due to a high incidence of accidents and lack of available medical care. You should also consider not using these vehicles.
  • Emergency vehicles:  There are no government ambulance services, and a scarcity of private ambulances makes it difficult for accident victims to receive timely medical attention.
  • Intoxicated drivers:  Drunk driving is rampant, especially in the evening.

Traffic Laws:

  • Traffic accidents:  A driver involved in a traffic accident should remain at the scene and attempt to contact the police or wait for the police to arrive to prepare an accident report. If renting a car or motorcycle, contact the rental company and its insurance agent.
  • Traffic moves on the right, but vehicles use all parts of the road.

Public Transportation:

  • Public transportation  is scarce and the transportation available is very limited after sunset. There are a limited number of buses and shared van/covered pick-up truck services.
  • Inter-city transport  is provided by buses, vans, pickups, and trucks, any of which may be in poor repair.
  • For-hire vehicles:  Taxis or cars-for-hire are available only at major transit hubs such as border crossings and airports. “Tuk-tuks” -- three-wheeled, open-sided vehicles -- are available in tourist areas, but are frequently in poor repair, and drivers generally speak little to no English. Car taxis are also available by phone.

Visit the website of Laos’  national tourist office  and our  road safety page  for more information

Aviation Safety Oversight:  As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Laos, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the Lao civil aviation authority [DLP1]  for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Laos’ air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the   FAA safety assessment page .

Procedure at the Border

When you arrive at the airport, head straight to immigration. The immigration desks equipped to scan the eVisa are marked with an eVisa sign on them. You must approach only these immigration desks. If you approach a non-eVisa immigration desk, you will be asked to go to the desk with the eVisa sign on it.

At the immigration counter (with an eVisa sign on it), you must present your passport and the print of your Laos e-Visa. The immigration officer will scan your eVisa and place a small sticker in your passport containing details of your eVisa.

Land border

Similar to airports, there are immigration counters designated specifically for eVisas. When you arrive at the land border, approach only those immigration countries that have an eVisa sign on them. The officer will scan your eVisa, place a sticker and stamp your passport.

Visa to Laos for Short and Long Term Visitors

Depending on your nationality, there are a few different possible ways to enter Laos. Some countries can take advantage of mutual agreements with Laos and their citizens are allowed to enter the country without any visa for a limited period of time. Some others can be granted a tourist visa on arrival at many entry points, either by land or flying in at the international airports. Few nationalities will need instead to obtain a tourist visa in advance at a Laos’s embassy or consulate.

Visa requirements for entering the country

Either the visa on arrival or the tourist visa obtained in advance will be valid for a maximum of 30 days and can be further extended at an immigration office if you need more time. This guide will help you to navigate among all the options that you have in order to make the whole process of planning your trip to Lao the easier possible.

Citizens coming from countries which are members of ASEAN (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) are not required to get a Visa and they are allowed to stay in Laos for 30 days.

In addition to these also Russia, Japan, Switzerland, Luxemburg, South Korea, Mongolia and all the former countries of the USSR have signed mutual agreements with Lao government that allow their citizens to enter the country without visa. In this case anyway they can stay in Laos only for 15 days.

When entering the country your passport will still be stamped and it has to be valid for 6 months. No additional documents or fees are required other than an application form available at any entry point.

It’s also important to notice that this will be only a free entry stamp and not a free visa, which means that it cannot be extended after the 15 days.

If planning to stay more than that you might want to consider to apply for a visa on arrival or you’ll have to exit and reenter Laos after 15 days. Like a regular tourist visa, the free stamp doesn’t allow you to work and it’s granted only for tourism purposes.

Visa on arrival

The vast majority of foreigners can obtain a visa on arrival at many entry points. Only 29 countries cannot get it and will have to apply in advance for a tourist visa. For a detailed list of these countries please check out the link in the last chapter of this guide.

A visa on arrival is valid for 30 days and can be extended twice (30 more days each time) at any immigration office in Laos. The visa is granted only for tourism purposes and doesn’t allow you to wok nor volunteer while in the country. The documents required are:

  • Original passport with 6 months of validity from the date of entry
  • Application form which will be available at the entry point
  • 2 passport pictures

The visa fee has to be paid in cash in USD, LAK or THB (when entering from Thailand). Depending on your nationality it varies from USD20 (China) to USD42 (Canada). For the majority of the countries it is USD30. When paying in Thai currency, a flat fee of THB1500 is usually required, which is higher than what it should be. Try to have enough USD with you to save some money. If you forget the pictures an additional fee will be required to scan the one on your passport. This can vary at different borders but shouldn’t be more than USD5.

The visa on arrival is available at all the major airports (Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Savannakhet and Pakse) and at all the most popular overland borders from Thailand, Vietnam, China and Cambodia (you can check the list at the end of the page).

Tourist visas obtained in advance

A tourist visa can be obtained in advance at any Lao’s embassy or consulate by anybody whose citizenship doesn’t allow them to get a visa on arrival. While it is possible to get a visa in advance even for people who can get a visa on arrival, there’s not a real advantage in doing that other than not having to wait in a line at the border.

In fact the two visas work exactly the same way, both of them being valid for 30 days. The tourist visa can be also extended twice and of course doesn’t allow to work. All the same documents required for the visa on arrival have to be presented at the embassy which depending on your nationality might require additional papers. Common ones are copy of your itinerary, prove of an exit flight from the country and a reservation in a hotel for at least the first few nights in Laos.

The visa fees are slightly more expensive, usually just a few USD. The whole process can take up to 5 business days, but some embassy offer an express service charging USD15 more. In this case the visa will be obtained in 1 day.

For detailed information about the document required please inquire the Lao’s embassy where you’re planning to apply. It can be done either in your original country or anywhere else you’re travelling before entering Laos.

Visa extensions

Both the visa on arrival and the tourist visa can be extended before the expiring date at the Immigration Department in Vientiane or at the Immigration Office in some major cities (Luang Prabang and Pakse among others). The visa can be extended twice for a maximum of 30 days each time and it costs LAK20000 (roughly USD2,5) for each day. This means that you can decide to extend it only for a few days if you want and you’ll pay only for those days and not for the entire month. An extra processing fee of USD2 will be asked on top of that. The process takes 1 working day, so you’ll have to leave you passport at the office and collect it the next day. 1 passport picture is also required, and an application form available on site has to be filled.

If you want to extend for a whole month it will cost you roughly USD70, so if you’re on a low budget you might consider to simply exit the country and reenter to save a little bit of money.

If you’re travelling to places where no immigration office is available, many travel agencies will be able to get it done for you at an extra fee. In this case be prepared to leave your passport with them for several days.

The visa extension will start from the day your previous one expires even if you go to immigration few days in advance, so you don’t need to go necessary on the last day.

Punishment for overstaying your visa

Overstaying in Laos is not a big deal as long as you’re ready to pay USD10 for any extra day. The fine has to be paid directly at your point of exit. If you need to stay just a few days more than what your visa allows you, overstaying could be easier than searching for an immigration office and go through the whole process. Anyway we would advise you to consider this option only if you’re leaving from an airport or from a major overland boarder like Vientiane. At some less trafficked boarders dishonest immigration officials might charge you more than that, threatening you to take you to jail if you don’t pay it.

Other useful information

When travelling to Laos with an international bus, make sure before you purchase the ticket that the driver will wait at the border for those people who need to apply for a visa on arrival. At busy entry points like Vientiane where the whole process can take 1 hour or more this will not happen, and you will have to rely on public transportation once you’re on the Lao side. Most important of all, don’t leave any bag on the bus even if they guarantee they will wait for you.

At some of the borders after you got your Visa, you’ll be approached by immigration officials asking for an extra USD1 for a not better specified procession or entry fee. We’re not sure this is really necessary and the fact that it happens quite randomly is suspicious, but we wouldn’t start an argument for one dollar.

Useful visa resources

Here’s a few links you might want to check to have further information about visas.

From the official Laos’s immigration department website you can learn more about any type of visa other than the tourist ones ( http://www.immigration.gov.la/visas.html ) and you can get the list of all the entry points where you can obtain a visa on arrival ( http://www.immigration.gov.la/checkpoints.html ).

At the Lao’s official tourism website you can check the list of the countries that cannot get a visa on arrival ( http://www.tourismlaos.org/show.php?Cont_ID=348 ).

Laos Visa On Arrival

Laos visa on arrival online application and requirements, do i need a visa on arrival for laos.

Most foreign visitors are required to obtain a visa in order to enter Laos. Fortunately, there are several options available to tourists. Many nationalities are eligible for a Laos visa on arrival which can be obtained , as the name suggests, directly at the border upon arrival.

The visa on arrival at the border allows for great flexibility in making travel arrangements as visitors do not need to plan their visa ahead. However, it may result in long lines at the airport or other port of entry. Moreover, travelers must carry with them all the relevant documentation and money to cover the visa and may even incur in extra fees on the spot.

That is why an increasing number of tourists opt instead for the online visa application . The very short processing times still allow for last-minute travel plans, but all the bureaucracy, documents, and payments are handled electronically in advance . This significantly reduces waiting times upon arrival and is considered more convenient for passengers who cross the border at eligible points.

Passport/Visa Note: Those requiring visas should obtain them in their home country before travelling to Laos. Visas are available on arrival at  international checkpoints . If you are in Vientiane, your Laos Visa extension can be done at the Immigration Office behind the Joint Development Bank (JDB) on Lane Xang Avenue, opposite the Morning Market. The office is open Monday-Friday, from 8:00am-4:00pm (closed 12:00 to 13:00 at lunchtime). The office is closed for applications on Friday afternoon.

Requirements

  • Your passport
  • One passport type photo
  • Service fee of US$3
  • Application fee of 3,000 kip per person
  • Visa extension fee : $2 per day if you have valid visa, $10 per day if your visa is already expired (overstayed days)

Get a travel agent or specialist provider to do your Laos visa extension for you. Most travel agents can arrange a Laos visa extension for you with a small overhead fee. This varies between providers, so shop around for the best deal.

The process is straight forward, just fill out the application form then submit together with your passport and pay the fees. In normal circumstances your visa is usually ready the same day. If you only plan to stay for a few more days this option could work out best.

If you are in Vientiane it is very easy, you can take a public bus (around 10,000 kip) to the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge. Complete  the immigration procedures on the Lao side; the take the shuttle bus (5,000 kip) to the Thai immigration point and enter Thailand. If you want to come straight back into Laos you simply have to cross the road to the Thai immigration to exit the country. Once again, get the shuttle bus and then arrive at the Lao side, where you can apply for a Laos  Visa on Arrival .

Your passport must have at least 6 months of remaining validity and a blank page for a visa stamp and don’t forget to take enough cash (US dollars) for the visa fee and two passport sized photos.

Laos Tourist Visa on an Arrival with an Indian Passport: 7 Things to Keep in Mind

Laos PDR allows Visa on Arrival for Indian Passport holders for stay up to 30 days . This post tells you on how to score a Laos visa on arrival with an Indian passport as you arrive at one of the international borders of Laos . You may also choose to opt for an E-visa for Laos!

Laos is a beautiful landlocked country located in Southeast Asia. One of the last domino of the Communist regimes around the globe and a very small country, Laos PDR is home to 7 million people.

Laos opened its door to tourists only in 1989, with the surge in new world order as a part of the glasnost program. Ever since, there has been no looking back for Laos as more and more backpackers and explorers set footprints in the pristine mountainous north of Laos!

Laos is known to the travelers’ clan for ethereal set up of the UNESCO world heritage ancient city of Luang Prabang. Beside traveling to Luang Prabang , plenty of other destinations are emerging with new offerings, like remote village of Nong Khiaw , Vang Vieng, the capital of Vientiane, Luang Namtha etc.

Laos allows Visa on Arrival and provision of E-visa for tourists from most of the nations. Here is a detailed list by Laos government.. Visa fee varies depending on the nationality of the tourist. We will discuss a few points you should keep in mind before applying for a Laos visa on Indian Passport. This is based on my personal experience on traveling to Laos.

My experience of scoring a Visa on Arrival at Luang Prabang, Laos!

I reached Luang Prabang at 8 am in the morning by a Bangkok Airways flight. We were provided with an arrival slip to be filled up while at the aircraft that required us to note down the flight we came in, the place we were going to stay and a few details related to the onward journey.

We collected our luggage, reached immigration with the arrival slip and a passport. I was asked for how long my stay is scheduled, where am I planning to go in Laos, where am I going to stay and what do I do. As I said, I write about travels, the immigration officer was amused!

It did not take me more than 5 minutes to get the visa stamped. Visa on Arrival fee in Laos is USD 40.

Laos Visa on Arrival is granted at every International Border Check-point

You can reach Laos by crossing the border by river (think slow boat ride on Mekong river) or an overnight train journey from Bangkok. At every prominent international check point, Visa on Arrival is granted. There are 22 prominent check points where this facility is available.

Visa fee for Laos

Only a handful of countries have visa fees waived off while traveling to Laos. Citizens of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as Japan, South Korea, Russia and Switzerland are the “chosen” ones!

Otherwise, you pay USD 40 for visa fee to enter Laos as a tourist. In case you are traveling at odd hours between 6 am to 8 am or a weekend or a national holiday, you will be charged extra amount, on top on the Visa fee.

Visa duration granted with a Visa on Arrival

Laos Visa on Arrival grants you a stay of 30 days in the country. After 30 days, you need to extend the visa by visiting respective embassy. In case you leave the country before 30 days are over, you need to have a renewed visa on Arrival which in turn would allow you another 30 days in the country.

Things to provide to Immigration to score a Laos visa on an Indian Passport

  • 2 passport size photographs with light or white background
  • Passport with at least 6 months validity or more. The passport needs to be the original one.
  • Proof of accommodation and fund
  • Cash payment for visa fee (USD accepted)

Passport Specification

Dog-earred passports and passports with less than 6 months validity are frowned upon and might revoke your entry to Laos.

Should you want to increase tourist Visa validity in Laos

Visa on arrival in Laos only allows you a stay for up to a period of 30 days. Post which you need to visit the embassy and apply for extension. You may visit Laos PDR embassy in your respective country and apply for an extended tourist visa if you plan to travel long term in Laos.

Apply for an Easy E-visa for Laos instead!

While visa on arrival in Laos is a cakewalk for most, it might turn into a challenge during tourist season when there is a heavy rush at the airport. I had to wait for at least a couple of hours when I was in Mauritius and I wished for an easier entry through Electronic visa like they do in Malaysia !

From 2019, Laos PDR has introduced the new E-Visa system that processes electronic visa applications within 3 business days. Upon approval, the Laos E-visa is valid for the next 60 days. Travelers must visit Laos within 60 days and can opt to travel in Laos for the next 30 days.

Following airports in Laos allow entry to e-visa holders.

  • Wattay International Airport
  • Luang Prabang International Airport
  • Pakse International Airport
  • Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge I
  • Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge II

Armed with a month long Visa at hand, you are free to explore Laos at your own speed. You can spend your days watching life unfold by the banks of the Mekong river. You can leave Luang Prabang and venture into the offbeat interior of Laos. Embrace adventure and learn living as one among nature in simple rustic rural livelihood. You can trace back the remnant of French colonial influence in Luang Prabang, Vientiane. While losing yourself along the unmarked nature trails and hikes, always remember that Laos remains as the most heavily bombed country by the US during the Vietnam war. Many unexploded cluster bombs still remain, not diffused, hidden in her verdant valleys. A killer trap. Keep that in mind and be cognizant as you go ahead and explore!

Hi, I read Your blog and I am very impressed after reading your blog, and your information about visa on arrival is very helpful for me. thank you very much.:)

Hi Madhurima, came across your blog while looking for information on the border crossing from Thailand to Laos with a slow boat on the Mekong. (Congrats on an excellent blog you have got going here. All the best for both the blog and your travels!)

From what I could make out, you flew into Luang Prabang, right? I am yet to come across any blog/vlog or forum where there is first hand information on an Indian (passport) having crossed borders by boat from Thailand to Laos or vice versa. Anyway, just wanted to check with you if you have heard or read about this.

My wife and I were keen to take the slow boat after we leave Chiang Rai for Luang Prabang. Some nagging questions that we have are:

1. I suppose we will, anyway, need to have a return air ticket to show the immigration authorities when we fly in to Bangkok…which we could cancel later. The Thai border authorities, I suppose, should not have a problem with anyone leaving Thailand by a non-air route as long as he/she is wishing the visa dates.

2. Not sure if the immigration authorities on the Laotian side would pose any problems at the Chiang Kong border. Of course, we would have an air ticket ready for our flight out of Laos. But wonder if they might pose any problems (genuine or to just make some money off us!). Officially, can Indians enter Laos through a border crossing (whether over the Mekong or via the Friendship bridge at Nong Khai.

Sorry about the longish query but, because you have done Laos and your blog posts here are quite detailed, was hoping you might be able to shed some light on the matter.

Look forward to your reply. Thanks!

Laos eVisa: More information

Most foreign nationalities need to apply for a Laos visa before traveling. Some nationalities are exempt from this requirement, depending on the number of days they spend in the country: For a stay of less than 15 days, nationals of Japan, Luxembourg, Myanmar and Switzerland can travel to the country with their passport only. For stays of less than 30 days, nationals of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, the Philippines, Russia, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam may travel to the country with their passport only. In both cases, these rules will only apply for tourist trips, and you must respect the agreed length of stay in the country. All other foreign citizens must apply for a tourist visa for their trip to Laos. This visa is valid for 60 days, and will allow you to stay in the country for a maximum of 30 consecutive days, allowing only one entry. You must not lie or omit relevant information in the personal details of your application. Customs authorities will check that everything is correct, and if it is not, they will deny entry to Laos.
