Rickie Fowler is no stranger to what has become a tradition at Golf Digest—our ranking of the 30 nicest guys on the PGA Tour. In our first edition, in 2013, Fowler finished third, and two years ago the California native was ranked fifth when Jordan Spieth took the top honor. Spieth credited several mentors for helping him navigate the pro ranks at a young age, including our inaugural winner, Steve Stricker. Spieth also singled out Fowler for praise, saying the five-time PGA Tour winner is “unbelievably generous with his time and has more energy than I can ever hope to have.”

Apparently, widespread agreement abounds, because Fowler, 30, heads our 2019 survey, edging U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland and Spieth, respectively . “There are a bunch of good guys on tour,” Fowler says. “I’m just trying to treat people the way my parents taught me to. It’s cool to have my peers view me this way. Very cool, very humbling.”

T-29 Chez Reavie Reavie had a feel-good win at the 2019 Travelers Championship. It was just his second career PGA Tour title, and first in nearly 11 years.

T-29. Max Homa Homa won the Wells Fargo Championship in May and raised money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital for every birdie he hit.

T-27. Zach Johnson The two-time major champion runs the annual Kids On Course Classic through the Zach Johnson Foundation to raise money for a college scholarship fund.

T-27. Kevin Streelman The two-time PGA Tour winner, along with his wife, Courtney, raised money to open two development centers in the African nation of Togo, in addition to co-hosting the Tenth Avenue North Classic, a tournament held annually in Raleigh, N.C., which supports area ministries.

The game has given me pretty much everything I have. To try and give back to the game and these young kids, who are very impressionable, is awesome.”

22. Aaron Baddeley The four-time PGA Tour winner is a supporter of HopeKids, which provides for families who have a child with cancer or other life-threatening medical conditions.

21. Justin Rose Rose founded the Kate and Justin Rose Foundation, which is focused on improving children's lives.

T-19. Peter Malnati Winner of the 2015 Sanderson Farms Championship, Malnati has been a supporter of the Walking For Kids Foundation, which allows PGA Tour pros and sports fans the opportunity to support several children’s charities.

T-19. Charles Howell III Howell supports the Arnold Palmer Medical Center in his adopted home of Orlando.

18. Dylan Frittelli The South African who won the 2019 John Deere Classic played in the inaugural Spirit Charity Challenge at Whispering Pines Golf Club outside of Houston, which benefitted the charity of each player's choice.

17. Danny Lee Lee, after winning his first PGA Tour event in 2015, donated $90,000 to New Zealand Golf to help the development of the game in his home country.

16. Jason Day The former World No. 1 founded the Brighter Days Foundation, which provides funding and resources to deserving projects and organizations in their hometowns.

What Driver is Most Used On the PGA Tour? Top 100 Player Analysis (2023 update)

Graeme Hay

Written by Graeme Hay | Last Updated: 21/05/2024

Rory McIlroy setting up to hit driver at a PGA Tour event

The driver is almost always the most talked about golf club in everyone’s bag.

And a good part of the reason for that is the average golfer often watches with wonder as the best players on the PGA Tour smash the ball seemingly endless distances down the middle of the fairway.

It seemed not that long ago that the 300 yard mark was the benchmark for the very long drivers on tour but now it appears you need to be hitting the ball 400 yards every now and then to be truly considered one of the game’s ‘big hitters’.

So what drivers are the pros using to achieve these huge distances?

We took a look at the top 100 players on the PGA Tour and analysed in detail the driver each of them carries to try and find what is the most common driver set up among the top pros.

Titleist’s TSR3 is the most used driver among the top 100 PGA Tour pros with 16 choosing it, including Justin Thomas and Max Homa. PING’s G430 LST is the next most popular model with 13 playing it while TaylorMade’s Stealth Plus and Callaway’s Paradym Triple Diamond drivers rank equal 3rd with 9 pros each using them.

The make and model of any driver only tells us so much though and when we looked at the drivers being used by this elite group it was fascinating to see the variance in lofts and also the multitude of different shafts being used.

It was also very interesting to note what has changed since we last carried out this detailed analysis two years ago!

Titleist's TSR3 driver

Most Played Driver on PGA Tour? Titleist Are Getting More Popular!

The amount of equipment available to PGA tour players is clearly on a different scale to anything that mere mortal amateurs can aspire to.

If a Tour pro wants to test out a new driver, shaft or set up it’s immediately made available to them and they are able to swap out drivers as often as they want from tournament to tournament or even practice session to practice session.

It’s no surprise therefore that we discovered 24 different models of driver being used by the top 100 pros on the PGA Tour but the big brands of Titleist, PING, TaylorMade and Callaway very much dominate accounting for 90 out of the 100 drivers in play.

Golfing Focus infographic comparing the number of driver models used by the top 100 PGA Tour pros in 2021 and 2023.

What was interesting to note though was that Titleist’s dominance among the big manufacturers has grown since the last time we did this in-depth study a couple of years ago.

Titleist drivers are the most played by the top 100 PGA Tour pros with 33 using them. PING models are the next most popular with 22 picking them. Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods’ driver brand of choice, TaylorMade is used by 19 pros. Callaway drivers are chosen by 16 of this group with Srixon drivers being used by 6 of them.

Compared to two years ago this means an extra 6 out of the top 100 PGA Tour pros (33 in 2023 vs. 27 in 2021) now consider Titleist to be the best drivers for them therefore further reducing the market share of the other big brands among this elite group.

What also becomes very apparent once again when you look in detail at the drivers used by the PGA Tour pros however is the huge number of different set ups and each driver is clearly custom fitted to a very exact extent for each player.

For example even though 13 out of the top 100 use a PING G430 LST driver you can bet your last dollar when you look closely that there will be a unique set up for each player whether that be achieved through an adjustment to the loft, set up or shaft.

It is noticeable also that not all the players are in a rush to move immediately to the latest model of their preferred brand of driver and do continue to play with older drivers.

So to give the full picture of how many and which pros are using which brand and model of driver here is the complete breakdown of the drivers used by the top 100 players on the PGA Tour in order of popularity.

What Degree of Driver Do the Pros Use? It Starts With a 9 Most of the Time

Once upon a time a driver used to come with one loft option and players were stuck with it.

Modern golf technology has obviously moved on hugely since then and the loft options available to golfers now, and especially at the elite PGA Tour level, are incredible.

The Titleist SureFit Hosel system for example features a sleeve and ring set up each with 4 settings and as a result enables 16 unique loft and lie angle combinations with a precision of up to 0.75 degrees between different options.

The players on the PGA Tour are the best in the business and when it comes to the degree of driver they use it seems clear that the exactness with which they approach it and their overall driver set up is part of the reason they are so successful.

9 degrees is the most used driver loft among the top 100 PGA Tour pros with 32 setting up with it, including Rory McIlroy. 14 of this group play a 9.5º loft. The next most played degree of driver is 10.5º chosen by 8 pros with 8º and 10º used by 7 each. 6.5º is the lowest driver loft in the top 100 and 12.1º is the highest.

It is common also for the top pros to change the loft of their driver occasionally depending on what the course they are playing demands but below is the current breakdown of driver lofts played by the top 100 PGA Tour players.

Golfing Focus infographic of the number of different driver brands and lofts being used by the top 100 PGA Tour pros.

What Driver Shaft is Most Used on the PGA Tour? There’s Weight Too!

PGA Tour pros are incredibly precise when it comes to the setup of their drivers and nowhere is that more evident than when it comes to the shafts that they choose to use with the biggest club in their bag.

When we carried out our analysis of the driver shafts being used by the top 100 players on the PGA Tour two years ago we found 70 different models being used and that number has now increased to 73 in 2023.

Fujikura’s Ventus Black 6X is still the most used driver shaft among the top 100 PGA Tour pros with 7 choosing it. The Ventus TR Blue 6X is the next most popular chosen by 5 players. Graphite Design’s Tour AD DI 6X and Fujikura’s Ventus Black 7X shafts are the third most common with three pros each picking them.

That almost every one of the top 100 pros is using a shaft that is unique to them however shows how must care the best players in the world take when it comes to making their choice and that attention to detail is again clearly evident when it comes to the driver shaft weights they use.

The most popular driver shaft weight used by the top 100 PGA Tour pros is 65g with 14 players selecting it, including Jordan Speith. 10 each use heavier shafts of 68g or 76g with 69g shafts the next most common weight being used by 7 pros . 56g is the lightest driver shaft among the top 100 with 90g the heaviest.

Interestingly while our analysis of the shafts the best pros on Tour use across all their clubs (which you can see here ) shows that True Temper is the shaft choice amongst the irons used by the top 100 this is not the case with driver shafts.

Once again when it came to driver shafts we found Fujikura models are the most popular driver shaft brand increasing their share among the top 100 PGA Tour pros from 28 two years ago to 34 in 2023.

Mitsubishi driver shafts, including the Tensei and Diamana series, remain the second most used in this elite group with 25 golfers using them.

True Temper shafts meanwhile are only the 3rd most popular in the drivers of the top 100 PGA Tour pros with 15 choosing them and all opting for shafts within the Project X HZRDUS range

Graphite Design driver shafts by comparison are the choice of 13 of this group.

Fujikura's Ventus Red, Blue and Black golf shafts

Before you go ….

Knowing what drivers the top pros are using to hit the ball as far as they do is one thing but how much does their equipment explain the huge distances they hit the ball both off the tee and with seemingly every club?

Read our next article to find out the key reasons why the pros hit the ball as far as they do, including how much of a role their clubs play, and how you can potentially add 20 to 30 yards to your own drives!

The all-time leaders in victories on the PGA Tour and  Sam Snead  and  Tiger Woods  — they are currently tied, but Woods is likely to pull ahead soon. Woods is one of two active golfers (along with Phil Mickelson ) inside the Top 10 in career PGA Tour wins. The Top 5 are:

  • Sam Snead, 82 wins
  • Tiger Woods, 82 wins
  • Jack Nicklaus , 63 wins
  • Ben Hogan , 64 wins
  • Arnold Palmer , 62 wins

Those are also the only golfers in PGA Tour history to achieve 60 or more wins. There are seven golfers with 50+ wins, nine with 40 or more victories, 16 with at least 30 wins. Thirty-seven golfers have won 20 or more PGA Tour titles in their careers.

Most PGA Tour Wins: All Golfers with 14 or More Victories

The number in parentheses next to each golfer's win total is the number of major championships won. An asterisk (*) next to a golfer's name indicates that golfer is still active on the PGA Tour.

(The farther back one goes in golf history, the sketchier the record-keeping becomes. For that reason, there are some lists of all-time wins on the web that differ very slightly for some golfers, particularly those below 30 wins, from this list. For example, some sources show Cary Middlecoff with 40 wins and Leo Diegel with 30. However, the numbers in our list above are the official win totals as recognized by the PGA Tour.)

Cut Line: Cutting cards could be in the PGA Tour's future

In this week’s edition, we celebrate the return of Castle Pines to the PGA Tour landscape, Max Homa’s return to social media and a voice of reason to the player-of-the-year conversation.

Something new . To be accurate, Castle Pines was a staple on the PGA Tour from 1986 to 2006 as the host venue of The International, but for a generation of players and fans, this week’s BMW Championship is a mile-high gift.

At 8,130 yards, Castle Pines is the longest course to host a Tour event and the rolling layout just south of Denver is a magical mix of mountain views and monstrous drives.

The guilty pleasure that is golf at altitude produced a 395-yard drive at the first hole for Rory McIlroy on Day 1 — which wasn’t even close to the day’s longest at the par-4 opener (Taylor Pendrith’s 418-yard drive led the day) — and maddening “altitude” math that produced plenty of glorious player-caddie content.

Beyond the compelling mix of thin air and elite athletes, there’s also the benefit of a meaningful tournament being held in a major market with many of the game’s best players, something the current Tour schedule is largely lacking.

Transparency . While the golf media (including your scribe) has spent the last few weeks debating potential PGA Tour player of the year candidates, Xander Schauffele put a bow on the conversation in a very Xander-like way this week.

“I’ve won two times and [Scottie Scheffler has] won seven. We both have a lot of top-10s. That’s kind of how I’m drawing it up. I know that’s how you guys draw it up,” Schauffele said. “He’s been playing unbelievable golf. I feel like we’re all just chasing him. I’ve done probably the best job of getting the closest to him, but it’s still very far away.”

It was an extreme sports-radio way to frame the narrative and ignores how the membership, who vote on player of the year, might view Schauffele winning the FedExCup with a victory next week at East Lake.

But even that scenario likely wouldn’t change many minds when it comes to who deserves the Jack Nicklaus Award. It certainly doesn’t seem relevant to Schauffele.

Made Cut-Did Not Finish (MDF)

Contraction . Change driven by an irrational force seems inevitable with the Tour’s policy board set to review a plan that would significantly reduce the total number of exempt players.

PGA Tour’s Player Advisory Council meets to discuss possible reductions in field sizes, exemptions

The PAC met on Tuesday at Castle Pines Golf Club, site of this week’s BMW Championship.

Rex Hoggard ,

The plan, which was presented to the circuit’s Player Advisory Council this week in Colorado and could be implemented as early as 2026, would reduce field sizes for full-field events to 120 players and, ultimately, cut the number of exempt players to the top 100 (down from the top 125) from the previous season’s FedExCup points list and the top 20 (down from the top 30) from the previous season’s Korn Ferry Tour points list.

Some players have argued that the proposed plan would, in theory, create a more competitive product but only if the signature events, which have been capped between 72 and 80 players, were expanded. Larger signature events would give the players off the Korn Ferry and DP World tours a better chance to compete against the game’s best, but according to one member of the PAC, the Tour isn’t likely to expand signature event field sizes as a tradeoff for smaller tee sheets at full-field events.

Of all the lessons learned over the last three years it is odd that the Tour continues to struggle with the notion that sometimes less isn’t always more.

Tweet (now X) of the week :

Hopped off Twitter a while back cuz I thought it might help my game. Boy was I wrong hoping tomorrow is the day it clicks. At the very least I’m finally going to grow an ass after walking Castle Pines this week — max homa (@Maxhoma) August 22, 2024

We jumped back on social media this week and were welcomed by the “sovereign of social media’s” return to the platform he stepped away from in June .

It appears Homa was hoping his time away would help turn his game around but that wasn’t the case with his best finish a tie for 43 rd at The Open. We’re not sure the toxic pool of social media is the answer to the six-time Tour winner’s woes but at least the rest of us will be entertained.

Something new . New-ish venues, like this week’s playoff stop south of Denver, intensify fan interest and bring elite golf to a market that’s been without for nearly two decades.

It also focuses a spotlight on what’s missing from the postseason — variety. While East Lake and last week’s host, TPC Southwind, have proven to be solid venues with plenty of corporate and fan support, there’s no ignoring the fact the Tour has no regular stops in New York City, Boston or Chicago (three of the top 7 media markets in the United States, according to the 2023-24 Nielsen rankings).

The BMW Championship makes regular stops in the Chicago market and in 2027 the tournament is scheduled to be played at Liberty National in New Jersey, but the lack of variety is noteworthy for a circuit that’s become increasingly focused on a star-driven product.

Atlanta and Memphis are part of the Tour’s fabric, but as the sports world learned during last month’s Olympics in Paris, incorporating an iconic location into a high-level competition makes for a more compelling product.

Things to know

  • Two-time Korn Ferry Tour winner and Korn Ferry Tour Points List leader Matt McCarty follows a bogey-free 8-under 63 with a bogey-free 7-under 64 for a three-stroke lead in his bid for the Three-Victory Promotion.
  • McCarty holds the fourth 36-hole lead of three-plus strokes this season, though none of the previous three leads were converted into a victory.
  • Brian Campbell (T2/-12), one of 10 players declared #TOURBound, stands T2 to match his career-high 36-hole position in a Korn Ferry Tour event; he will join McCarty in Saturday’s final pairing.
  • Korn Ferry Tour winner Ryan Gerard (T4/-11) is T4 or higher through 36 holes for the eighth time this season, four more occurrences than any other player on Tour this season.
  • The 36-hole cut was made at 5-under 137, with 80 professionals advancing to the weekend.
  • Upon conclusion of this week’s Albertsons Boise Open presented by Chevron, the top 144 players on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List will be eligible to compete in the Simmons Bank Open for the Snedeker Foundation, the second of four season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Finals events.

Charting the leader

Matt McCarty (1st/-15)

  • McCarthy holds his second career 36-hole lead/co-lead in a Korn Ferry Tour event (T1/2024 The Ascendant presented by Blue/finished T5).
  • At 15-under 127, he eclipses his previous career-low 36-hole score by four strokes (131/2023 UNC Health Championship presented by STITCH/Rounds 1 and 2).
  • One of two players in the field without a bogey through 36 holes (William Mouw/T8).
  • Bidding to become the 13th player in Korn Ferry Tour history to earn the Three-Victory Promotion; the last player to accomplish the feat was Mito Pereira (2020-21), and the last to accomplish the feat in a single calendar year season was Wesley Bryan (2016).
  • Stands No. 1 on the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour Points List and is one of five multi-time winners this season.
  • One of 10 players already declared #TOURBound and assured of finishing in the top 30 on the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour Points List, thus ensuring they earned PGA TOUR membership for the 2025 season.
  • Entered the week with five top-10s – including two wins – in the last six Korn Ferry Tour events.
  • Finished in the top 75 of the Korn Ferry Tour Points List each of the last two seasons (No. 55 as a rookie in 2022, No. 35 in 2023) and is fully exempt for 2024.
  • Earned Korn Ferry Tour membership for the first time ahead of the 2022 season with a T39 at Final Stage of 2021 Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament (now PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry).
  • Turned professional in 2021 after five seasons at Santa Clara University (2016-21), where he earned three All-West Coast Conference honors (2018, 2019, 2021).

Matt McCarty on whether a shorter course like Hillcrest Country Club plays to his strengths… “Yeah, I mean, I think you can kind of play as aggressive as you want, and if you drive it well while doing that, you can really have some like easy looks. That freedom of just kind of being able to play it a little bit more aggressive is probably nice. You kind of got to do everything well. I haven't hit my wedges too well, but I've been making a lot of, you know, 20‑footers, so it's been good.”

McCarty on if Hillcrest reminds him of other courses he enjoyed success at… “San Jose Country Club; we played out there in college. It's very similar. It's tight. If you drive it well, you can give yourself a lot of good looks. I think being accurate off the tee kind of like plays into my hand a little bit. Yeah, the greens are good, course is in great shape. Rough's kind of penal so you've got to hit good shots or you can make some mistakes”

Additional player notes

  • Brian Campbell (T2/-12), who stands No. 9 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List and is one of 10 players declared #TOURBound, matches his career-high 36-hole position in a Korn Ferry Tour event (2nd/2024 Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper/finished T10).
  • Korn Ferry Tour winner Isaiah Salinda (T2/-12), who stands No. 18 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List, bounces back from a four-putt double bogey at the par-3 17th with a closing birdie at the par-4 18th; his only previous occurrence of being T2 or higher through 36 holes of a Korn Ferry Tour event was as co-leader of the 2024 Panama Championship, which he won by eight strokes.
  • Emilio Gonzalez (T4/-11), who stands No. 68 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List and began the season on a medical extension, establishes a new career-high 36-hole position (previous: T5/2024 Astara Golf Championship presented by Mastercard/finished T8).
  • Korn Ferry Tour winner Ryan Gerard (T4/-11), who stands No. 13 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List, is T4 or higher through 36 holes for the eighth time this season, four more occurrences than any other player on Tour this season; he converted one of those previous instances into a victory at the BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by TD SYNNEX.
  • Kyle Westmoreland (T4/-11), a Class of 2022 Korn Ferry Tour graduate who stands No. 34 on the Points List, is T4 or higher through 36 holes for the fourth time this season; he previously accomplished the feat four times in his 36 career starts on Tour prior to the 2024 season.
  • Former No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking Braden Thornberry (T4/-11), who entered the week at No. 67 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List, stands T4 through 36 holes for the second consecutive event (Magnit Championship/finished T37)
  • Three players who entered the week outside top 144 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List made the cut: No. 154 Bryson Nimmer (T8/-10), No. 148 Morgan Hoffmann (T14/-9), No. 146 Bill Haas (T22/-8)
  • Mason Williams (T33/-7), who stands No. 130 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List, is the only one of the five players without Korn Ferry Tour membership in this week’s field to make the cut
