Gobeklitepe

Göbekli Tepe, the site of the world’s oldest temple, is also known as the first humanities cathedral on a hill. It stands as the most important representative of a belief system, dating to the early days of the Neolithic Period over 11,00 years ago.

Göbekli Tepe has cultural, religious and historical significance. Through the discovery of Göbekli Tepe archaeologists have uncovered a well-preserved site that highlights that the coordinated effort to build religious monoliths ultimately led to the development of complex and settled societies. This discovery shows us that society and agriculture did not come before religion as was believed by many, but that religion and sites like Göbekli Tepe allowed complex societies to develop.

The Göbekli Tepe excavation area is over 90,000 square meters (larger than 12 football fields) and the current excavation site viewed by visitors is over 15 metres in depth. From Istanbul, daily private tours are available to Göbekli Tepe. Göbekli Tepe, the nomadic people’s spiritual centre is 1.5 km away from the nearest village, Örencik, and 18 km from the nearest city, Urfa, in South-eastern Turkey.

Mount Nemrut

Mount Nemrut (2150 metres above sea level) is one of Turkey’s most spectacular sites and is a part of Turkey Package tours. Located in the Kahta district between Adiyaman and Malatya, near the Ankar Mountains (Anti Taurus). This site is a visual feast, constructed in 62 BCE by King Antiochus I as a monument to his rule, atop the highest mountain in the region and part of the Kingdom of Commagene. Often referred to as the ‘Throne of Gods’ it is one of the most ambitious sites completed during the Hellenistic period. Today, the sculptural heads sitting atop the mountain, preserved statues and, the beautiful location chosen for a tomb like sanctuary for the king, amazes visitors.

When you join one of our private tours you will explore many interesting aspects of Mount Nemrut including the burial tumulus (altar) located on the Eastern Terrace. Thought to be the tomb of Antiochus 1. The tumulus formed with crushed piles of limestone, unique to this region, gives the impression of a new mountain at the summit extending to the sky. It’s complex design, grand scale and the surrounding sculptures combine Persian, Hellenistic and Anatolian traditions granting it UNESCO World Heritage Protection due to its cultural and construction significance.

Mt Nemrut; At the junction of the East and West civilisations, Nemrut Dagi (Mount Nemrut) is one of the most astounding sites in Turkey: A collection of colossal statues on a remote mountain 2150m high, adorning the temple and tomb of King Antiochus. Nemrut Dağı has since been a significant attraction, with thousands sunrise and sunset visitors to see the stones in the best possible light. It has been designated a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO, and is one of the most important National Parks in the country. In addition to the statues, the entire site includes art from the Commagene civilisation, the Eskikale (Old Castle), Yenikale (New Castle), Karakus Hill and Cendere Bridge. Most people use the nearby towns of Malatya, Kahta or Adiyaman as a base, and the road to the summit is only open from mid-April to mid-October because of heavy snow the rest of the year.

Nemrut Mountain Tour from Cappadocia

1. Day: Nemrut Mountain Tour from Cappadocia

Tours4Turkey Travel provides an opportunity to visit Nemrut mountain from Cappadocia.

Nemrut Dağ (mountain) is the Hierotheseion (temple-tomb and house of the gods) built by the late Hellenistic King Antiochos I of Commagene (69-34 B.C.) as a monument to himself and is among the World Heritage sites listed by UNESCO.

The Hierotheseion of Antiochos I is one of the most ambitious constructions of the Hellenistic period. Its complex design and colossal scale combined to create a project unequalled in the ancient world. A highly developed technology was used to build the colossal statues and orthostats (stelae), the equal of which has not been found anywhere else for this period. The syncretism of its pantheon and the lineage of its kings, which can be traced back through two sets of legends, Greek and Persian, is evidence of the dual origin of this kingdom's culture.

Two separate antique processional routes radiate from the east and west terraces. Five giant seated limestone statues, identified by their inscriptions as deities, face outwards from the tumulus on the upper level of the east and west terraces. These are flanked by a pair of guardian animal statues – a lion and eagle – at each end. The heads of the statues have fallen off to the lower level, which accommodates two rows of sandstone stelae, mounted on pedestals with an altar in front of each stele. One row carries relief sculptures of Antiochos’ paternal Persian ancestors, the other of his maternal Macedonian ancestors.

Mount Nemrut

Tour description

After pick up from Sanliurfa or Adıyaman airport or hotel you will meet your guide and you will begin your tour of this hallowed landscape.

On the way to Mount Nemrut, you will visit 'Black Bird Burial Mound', also known as ‘Karakus Tumulus’, a monumental mausoleum built in 36 BC.

You will also travel over the ancient Roman Bridge at Cendere which is built so well it can still be used today.

Snap photos of the ancient Roman Severan Bridge, and visit the ruins of Arsemia, which date back to 200 BC, to learn about the Commagene Kingdom.

The region that lies between the Taurus Mountains and the Euphrates was called Commagene during the Greek and Roman periods. Commagene was established originally as an independent kingdom in 162 BC by Mithridates Kalinikos I. The kingdom was at the height of its splendor during the period of King Antiochus I (69-36 B. C.), who succeeded Mithridates. Most of the archaeological remains which survive to our times, including the tumulus at the peak of Nemrut Dag, which still refuses to reveal all its secrets, are from the time of Antiochus I. At the cone shape summit of this 200m elevated mountain one can find statues mythical figures of Apollon, Zeus, Hercules, and others.

The highest point in the region at an altitude of 2134m, Mount Nemrut provides a spectacular viewpoint for sunrise or sunset, with the scattered heads of the statues lending a mystical essence to the scene.

There will be free time for lunch and your guide will suggest best places to try some local foods.

After the tour you will be transferred to Sanliurfa or Adıyaman airport or to hotel in Urfa.

Then, we will drive about 1 hour to get to Gaziantep and visit Zeugma Mosaic Museum . The Gaziantep Mosaic Museum has Turkey's finest fully protected mosaics. The museum has beautiful mosaics from Zeugma Ancient City. Zeugma is in the Tentative List of UNESCO since 2021. These mosaics are a 2000 years old and unique in design, colour and perfection. Besides this 1450 m² of mosaics, there are also 140 m² of frescoes, 4 Roman fountains, 20 columns, 4 limestone sculptures, bronze statue of Mars, grave steles, and sarcophagi. Afterward, we will enjoy lunch at the renowned 'Kebapçı Halil Usta Restaurant.' Gaziantep is celebrated for its rich cuisine, particularly its kebabs , and this restaurant has been recognized multiple times as the best kebab restaurant in Turkey.

After lunch, we will embark on a two-hour drive to Harran , an ancient city where Prophet Abraham is believed to have lived for a time. Despite its location in a dry, barren plain, Harran has thrived for 5,000 years. Serving as a vital hub for commerce between Anatolia and Mesopotamia, Harran sustained a prosperous and enduring culture over millennia. The city is renowned for its distinctive adobe beehive houses, its castle, and the remains of an 8th-century university building. Harran has been on the UNESCO Tentative List since 2000. After the visit in Harran, we will drive about 45 minutes to Sanliurfa Center and check-in to the hotel. After some rest at the hotel, we will go out for dinner. Our dinner will be in one of the best restaurants in Sanliurfa: Culcuoglu Restaurant. The restaurant is very famous with its' kebaps and baklava. After having the dinner there, we will drive back to the hotel. Overnight accommodation in Sanliurfa. .

Mount Nemrut

Day 2 ( Visit Gobeklitepe & Karahantepe, sunset in Mt. Nemrut, breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

After breakfast at the hotel, we will take a stroll through the Sanliurfa center. This city has a rich history, as it is said that the Old Testament prophets Jethro, Job, Elijah, and Abraham all resided here. Additionally, the region was the temporary home of Prophet Moses, who worked as a shepherd for seven years before returning to Egypt. This historical connection has earned the city the title of 'The City of Prophets.' During our visit, we will explore the Pool of Prophet Abraham, where it is believed that Abraham, refusing to follow the religion of Nimrod, was thrown into a fire in an attempt to kill him. However, as a follower of God, Abraham emerged unharmed, and miraculously, the fire transformed into water, with the firewood turning into the carps that now inhabit the pool. Our journey will also include a leisurely walk through the streets, which boast a remarkable harmony of diverse cultures and ethnic groups.

We will drive about 30 minutes to get to one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Turkey: Gobeklitepe . Gobekli Tepe is the earliest known evidence of monumental human-made architecture so far. The site has been proved by the scientists that it is the oldest temple in the world from 11,500 years ago. The site features a large number of limestone pillars, many decorated with the stylized image of a T, and archaeoastronomers believe these also served an astronomically aligned function, as well.

The upcoming expedition is set to explore the recently discovered and yet-to-be-fully-excavated site, Karahantepe . Karahantepe, a significant Pre-Pottery Neolithic Site , is located in the Taş Tepeler Region of Southeast Turkey, nestled in the province of Şanlıurfa. The term "Taş Tepeler" translates fittingly to "stone hills," accurately portraying an area hosting numerous archaeological sites, known for its T-shaped anthropomorphic pillars reminiscent of those prominent at Göbekli Tepe. What makes Karahan Tepe intriguing is its connection to the same cultural context as Göbekli Tepe, albeit with distinctive features. In contrast to the more formal, realistic, and intricately crafted imagery found at Göbekli Tepe, the depictions at Karahan Tepe , while still imbued with ritualistic significance, are characterized by a more dynamic quality and less refined rendering.

Following this remarkable visit, we will drive approximately 1 hour to Cevahirhan Restaurant. This 700-year-old historical caravanserai has been beautifully restored and is now renowned as the finest restaurant in Şanlıurfa. After enjoying a delightful lunch there, we will continue our journey with a 1.5-hour drive to our hotel in Adıyaman. After checking in and resting for about an hour, we will embark on a 2-hour drive to the summit of Mount Nemrut. Mount Nemrut has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 . We will hike up to summit about 20 minutes after arriving to the entrance of the national park. After seeing one of the best sunsets in the world , statues of gods and kings, we will drive down from the mount to Kahta for our dinner in a nice restaurant there. Then, the final drive about 45 minutes to get to the hotel and overnight in Adiyaman.

Mount Nemrut
