The 15 Best Food Shows Of 2022

scene from the bear

In a world where there rarely appear to be enough hours in a day to work, leisure, and, yes, cook, we find ourselves watching television. Food television — shows teaching viewers how to cook a recipe, travel shows that bring awareness to the worldwide variation in cuisines, or cutthroat competitions that present the best of the best chefs and restauranteurs preparing signature dishes to impress a panel of even more famous judges — are an essential part of a foodie's life and media consumption (or ours at least). Besides the obvious learning and entertaining aspects, we find ourselves immersed in the ability to live vicariously through the plates of others.

This year, we have seen a wide variety of shows both emerge and release new seasons of classic food T.V. favorites . Here are our reviews for the best food shows in 2022 — perfect for viewers who like a balance of competition, culture, and company.

The Great British Baking Show

Baking contestant with display

The " Great British Baking Show " is a 10-week baking showdown between 12 of Britain's best amateur bakers. Each week, bakers are required to produce a signature piece based on a recipe of their choosing, followed by a technical challenge where each baker is given paired-down instructions of the same recipe. The showstopper challenge caps out each week, in which bakers are asked to create dazzling work with both talented baking and design skill. These three challenges are set around a theme chosen by producers (with input from judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood) such as biscuit week, bread week, and caramel week. One baker is eliminated at the end of each week and the rest truck on for another week in the baking tent.

It is hard not to love the premise of the " Great British Baking Show ," as well as the sheer joy of many of the amateurs who are just happy to be baking each week. We've found this show less cutthroat than American cooking shows like "MasterChef" and "Chopped," but still emblematic of a learning opportunity for viewers and competitors alike.

Chef's Table: Pizza

If you're looking for a lighter food show, your best bet is to tune into comedian Nicole Byer's " Nailed It! " This show, judged with some legitimacy from pastry chef Jacques Torres, is made to put an end to cutthroat kitchen shows entirely. Some of the worst (yes, you read that correctly) amateur bakers in America are invited to compete for a $10,000 prize — for creating look-alike pastry masterpieces. However, the results of these challenges are not only laughable, but also reflective of some of the worst times you've probably ever had stress-baking for an important occasion.

This show wouldn't be complete without its hosts and the laughs it delivers. Nicole Byer is not only hysterical, but seems to be genuinely having the time of her life hosting each episode — which makes it all the more funny. The nature of the series is chaotic and not always the most organized (like many of the baker's final presentations), but it is guaranteed to give even the worst bakers hope for success.

Nicole Byer and Nailed It! cast

Pizza fans, this one is for you. "Best in Dough" appeared for its first season on Hulu and Disney+ in 2022 and has since produced several episodes that challenge the way viewers think about a simple pizza pie. Host Wells Adams (from Bachelor in Paradise) brings in panels of other judges to usher competitors through three rounds of pizza making. Not only do the challenges vary each week, but there is a lot of variation in the competitors battling for the $10,000 prize. The show has featured Nonnas (Italian grandmothers), batches of college students, and deep dish rivals from the American midwest. Producers have honed in on the challenges specific to pizza, which makes this show more unique than other cooking competitions. For example, competitors in one episode have to put a spin on frozen pizza without changing the crust, while in another, pizza traditionalists have to harness techniques from outside the box to upgrade their pizza into something new.

Overall, "Best in Dough" has the benefit of being a novel show with a more specific plot than other cooking competitions. We're hopeful to see what slice the show will dish next.

You rarely see competitive food shows revolving around beverages. " Drink Masters " is here to fill that gap. Each week, contestants use their mixology experience to craft alcoholic beverages that transcend martinis and Long Island iced teas. The prize of $100,000, as well as the title of "Ultimate Drink Master" is at stake with every passing week. Host Tone Bell is joined by a panel of judges for each round and uses a keen sense of humor and wit to keep viewers engaged — and entertained.

For folks just diving into mixology, "Drink Masters" reveals how culinary ingredients, like the foods we eat rather than drink, have become more ubiquitous for mixologists. The show highlights fruits and botanicals, as well as themed weeks that you would see on other traditional cooking shows. Reality Blurred notes that Drink Masters also obscures the line between just shaking a beverage and pouring it into a glass and transforming mixology into a beautiful art that is worthy of celebration.

" The Bear " on FX has all of the properties of a good show — great casting, a heartfelt storyline, and connections to the emotions and identity of the audience. Each episode follows the life of Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto, a young professional chef who returned home to Chicago to run his family's sandwich shop following the death of his brother. Carmy has to find a balance between running a small business, figuring out a new family dynamic, and developing himself into the young man he wants to be.

Although food is at the center of this show, it is not the only feature of it. The Bear is a heartfelt, emotional, fast-paced, and raw show that emulates many of the emotions experienced in the back-of-house at a nonfictional restaurant. "The Bear" is also underlined by elements of a family as Carmy builds connections with the rough-edged kitchen crew at the shop — a similar phenomenon that glues folks working in the restaurant industry together. In short, if you've worked in a kitchen before, you'll relate to many of the themes expressed in "The Bear."

The " Tiny Chef Show " is a light, food-infused television show for children. Each episode follows Tiny Chef, a tiny herbivore, who teaches children all about plant-based cooking. Tiny Chef is voiced by RuPaul and includes problem-solving, kitchen safety, and friendship for audiences above the age of four. Besides absorbing knowledge about cooking, viewers are immersed in Tiny Chef's tree stump community with his friends Henry the snail, assistant cook Olly, and pet Ruby the caterpillar.

Each episode of the show follows the same format — a "dish of the day" for what will be prepared, a "what's in the bag" segment discussing ingredients, and a "dish with chef" where Tiny Chef interviews a celebrity guest. This show keeps things lighthearted with Tiny Chef's exit line "Love you so much, bye!" Although the young audience of the show may not remember much about how to make pancakes or snap-pea stir fry, viewers will remember Tiny Chef's commitment to his friends and why having fun (while being safe) is important in the kitchen.

" Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy " premiered on CNN in 2021. In the most recent season of the show, the American actor and filmmaker traveled to Sardinia, Calabria, Puglia, and Liguria to explore the culinary history and flavors of each region. Although the food is no doubt tantalizing (after all, who wouldn't love learning about the rich history of San Marzano tomatoes), Stanley Tucci provides an undoubtedly sensual flair to the way he talks about the relationship between food and Italian culture.

A review published in The Dartmouth notes that the show emphasizes a connection to place-based learning, as well as a commitment to representing a wide diversity of guests. You'll find each episode packed with Michelin-star-rated chefs, local purveyors, and food enthusiasts alike. There is something for everyone on this show, and you will walk away learning so much about Italian culture and the food that makes the country's regions so unique from one another.

A show starring host Michelle Obama? Count us in! Waffles & Mochi is a streaming show for kids on Netflix that focuses on kid-friendly cooking. Puppet hosts Waffle and Mochi travel from the "land of frozen foods" (a stab at the political liberalism experienced with Obama's "Let's Move Campaign"), to an animated neighborhood in New York where Obama helps the two puppets learn about foods like mushrooms, tomatoes, and eggs. Episodes feature food media figures like Samin Nosrat (author of "Salt Fat Acid Heat") and chef José Andrés. Each episode ends with a tidbit and a moral — such as eating foods like salt in moderation or the importance of having patience (in making pickles).

While there are some drawbacks to the information being presented in the show (including and most notably, the assumption that eating certain foods is a choice rather than a major systemic equity issue), there's a lot of positive information about eating with knowledge and working with others presented in the show, which is a premise that makes Waffles & Mochi one of the best cooking shows to watch on Netflix for kids.

Many of the shows we've selected travel to Europe frequently, but " Take Out with Lisa Ling " is one of the very few shows set entirely around Asian cuisine. The HBO Max original series features journalist Lisa Ling as she travels across America looking for the stories of Asian Americans who have contributed to the institution of takeout food in America — much like Lisa's own family. The show tells the unique stories behind the Asian influence on American culinary industries. One particularly poignant example was Lisa's travel to Louisiana where Asian Americans first settled in 1763. The Filipino decedents from this area contributed indescribably to the shrimp industry in the Gulf, as well as the culinary traditions around seafood in the Southern United States.

"Take Out with Lisa Ling" has all of the elements of an effective cultural docu-series — a charming host, clear historical connection, and a reclaimed narrative that has largely been lost to both time and misinformation.

"Top Chef," released for season 19 in 2022, is back with new competitors in Houston. Hosts Padma Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio, and Gail Simmons are joined by guest judges to evaluate competitors' performance on varying challenges that make this show seem like a part reality television show and a part cooking show. Over time, audiences grow attached to competitors and have an investment in the competitors' success throughout the season. The subliminal focus on food and cooking through a similar structure to Bravo's other top-performing show "Project Runway" makes "Top Chef" one of the best cooking shows of all time .

There are favorable reviews for this season of "Top Chef" compared to other seasons, as noted by Variety. The show has calmed down in terms of fits of anger and battery from its contestants. Variety notes that the focus of the show has steadily shifted toward making really great food rather than the raging stress and violence that plagues (and ultimately makes or breaks) other competitive cooking shows.

" Fast Foodies " on truTV is a reality show that first appeared in 2021 and renewed for a second season in 2022. Each episode features cooking show chef alumni Jeremy Ford, Kristen Kish, and Justin Sutherland as the chefs try to re-create a celebrity guest's favorite fast food with a few innovative twists. There are three rounds to each competition, including the "copycat round" in which the chefs make a dish as similar as possible to the guest's favorite, and the "remix round" in which the chefs have to make a remix on the dish — along with a bit of challenge from their competitors. The winner receives the "chompionship" trophy while the losers eat a gnarly slurry of ingredients or face other minor punishments.

From a viewer's perspective, it is cool to see what some of the celebrity guests' favorite fast food indulgences are (like "Community" actor Joel McHale 's love of the Portillo's Chicago-style hot dog), as well as laugh at the childlike nature of the show. If you want a quick laugh with not much investment in the series, "Fast Foodies" is the way to go.

HBO's " The Big Brunch " is trying to reinvent how we think about brunch food. Hosted by "Schitt's Creek" star Dan Levy, competitors are charged to cook their best spins on classic brunch dishes in a two-round showdown for a $300,000 prize. Levy, an avid brunch enthusiast, handpicked the 10 competitors on the show and was the executive producer (via Guilty Eats ) — which is a major draw for folks who adore Levy's sense of humor and wittiness.

Although "The Big Brunch" was released in the middle of November for its first season, it has already seen tremendous praise from folks looking for a more relaxed and earnest cooking show. There is a wide diversity of contestants represented on the show, Guilty Eats notes, as well as an emphasis on the characters as individuals rather than cooking machines. Decider adds the first episode of the season was rather tame and gave off the same aura as Top Chef, where the competitors are challenged to make dishes that represent themselves and their individual journey through food. It's a feel-good cooking show — with a lot of delicious food shots thrown into it.

" Somebody Feed Phil " follows the journey of "Everybody Loves Raymond" producer Phil Rosenthal traveling and eating around the world. Season six of the show was released in 2022 and includes locations in Philadelphia, Croatia, Austin, Santiago, and Nashville — as well as a tribute piece to Phil's parents who inspired him to create the show.

Overall, the show is more lighthearted than other travel cooking shows (like Anthony Bourdain's " Parts Unknown "), and features a lot of Phil's goofy faces along the way. "Somebody Feed Phil's" producers balance the historical context of foods and culinary traditions globally but have the time to insert heartfelt pieces into each episode — including the conversations Phil has with his parents at the end of each episode. One of the draws of this show is that Phil Rosenthal appears to have a very little educational background in cooking — he's just a man excited about traveling and eating around the world. It's the unbridled enthusiasm that many cooking and travel shows neglect to offer.

"Chefs vs. Wild" on Hulu was released for its first season in 2022. Each episode features two chefs dropped in the wilderness and are "forced" to forage and cook restaurant-worthy meals for a panel of judges. Each chef is paired with a survivalist who is literate in the area to help them forage for ingredients for two days. For each meal, a protein is provided (in the first episode, it's elk heart and loins — so not the chicken breasts you are familiar with), but the chefs must find the other ingredients for the appetizer, entree, and dessert components.

Fans of "Chefs vs. Wild" are likely more familiar with shows like "Man vs. Wild" and "Naked & Afraid," where wilderness is a major factor in the performance of the competitors. As a result, "Chefs vs. Wild" is less structured than "Chopped" or "Iron Chef." But, you'll still find a bit of cutthroat competitiveness and classic reality television drama out there in the wilderness.

I Am Tired of Watching People Go to Italy

Major networks, I am pleading: There are other countries

Bald man wearing sunglasses walks down a street surrounded by old buildings.

Everyone is in Italy this year — including Alison Roman, whose new cooking series will, like half the people my Instagram feed, take us on a tour of the Amalfi Coast. CNN announced yesterday that Roman’s four-episode (More Than) A Cooking Show , which was originally slated for the now-defunct CNN+, will hit CNN this fall. The show will invite audiences into Roman’s New York kitchen and to join her on her travels abroad. Sure, that sounds fun, if a bit familiar.

Between Bobby and Giada in Italy ; Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy ; episodes of Chef’s Table , Somebody Feed Phil , Top Chef , and Salt Fat Acid Heat , I can’t help but feel a little Italy-ed out in recent years, like I’ve hit my capacity for watching clips of cheesemaking or people eating perfectly crisped Neapolitan pizza. (And that doesn’t even include Italy’s dominance over fictional food-adjacent shows like Netflix’s upcoming From Scratch and the second season of HBO’s hospitality-themed The White Lotus .) Now, I’m no stranger to dreaming up my own Eat Pray Love spaghetti scene , and the green-eyed monster and I were in close company this summer as I scrolled past so many friends and influencers’ Lake Como weddings and rented villas.

Yet it’s all starting to feel repetitive, especially when one considers how infrequently this in-depth treatment is given to other countries. Italy and France, for that matter, are countries and cuisines whose regionality is given its due in the food landscape of the United States — while so many places in the world remain simplified in the culinary imagination: a visit in a food series episode here and there, usually relying on the same biggest-name cities and chefs.

It’s as though major networks, wanting a guaranteed hit, see the success of all this Italy-centric TV and think, great, let’s do that again — which is almost certainly what’s happening (streaming overload led Time to claim last year , “Welcome to TV’s era of peak redundancy”). CNN is a perfect example of that: Not only is Roman’s Italy show dropping this fall, featuring the Amalfi Coast, but so is the continuation of Tucci’s, which will explore Italy’s regions further after going to Tuscany, Naples, the Amalfi Coast, Rome, Bologna, Milan, and Sicily last year.

It all feels a little safe: Showing potential travelers from the U.S. food that is already pretty familiar, in a country that feels like a safe bet, thus reinforcing Western expectations about which cuisines are valuable and which countries worth traveling to. I’m happy to imagine Italian beach moments a la The Talented Mr. Ripley , but what other daydreams could we have if food travel shows dared to delve deeper into places less frequently depicted?

BEST TRAVEL AND FOOD SHOWS STREAMING NOW; SALIVATE FROM YOUR COUCH

new travel food shows 2022

I Love Food. I love eating it. I love cooking it. I love searching back alleys for it. I love trying it – all of it! To me, Food and Travel just go hand in hand. Two of life’s most fabulous pleasures. Two of life’s most fabulous treasures.

International travel is off the cards for us all right now, but that doesn’t mean we have to stop exploring. With some of the best travel shows streaming on Netflix, we have the world at our fingertips – with episodes that take us from markets in Mexico to hawker stalls in Singapore to the farthest reaches of the Arctic, and to BBQ joints in Kansas City. Whether you’d rather follow the late, great Anthony Bourdain, Sir David Attenborough, David Chang, Samin Nosrat, Samantha Brown, Jeff Goldblum, or the Fab Five along the way is up to you. Below are some of my favourite travel shows involving journeys by land, air, and sea—and lots, and lots and lots of eating.

Parts Unknown

You simply cannot have a list of the best travel shows and not feature the late, great Anthony Bourdain . In fact, he’s on our list more than once. In Parts Unknown , the chef and travel personality circled the world many times over, in search of music, culture, humour, history, and—of course—really good food. Over 12 seasons (the last aired posthumously), Bourdain visited the indigenous Andes with Eric Ripert , the Sochi Winter Olympics, the Mississippi Delta, and, most famously, Hanoi with then-president Barack Obama.

Street Food

Made by the same folks behind Chef’s Table (also on this list), this show moves away from formal restaurant kitchens and onto the streets, for a guide to some of the world’s best curb-side meals and snacks. The show’s first season is all about Asia , traveling to nine different countries to meet the people behind the food, like a Michelin-starred street stall serving up tom yum soup, and Truoc (pictured below left), who serves a variety of snail dishes in Ho Chi Minh City. Stops in India, Singapore, the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and Indonesia are also on the itinerary. A second season focuses on Latin America , and is streaming on Netflix now.

Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat

Be sure to watch this show on a full stomach, or you’ll be pausing to bake focaccia or cook tahdig along with affable host and Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat cookbook author Samin Nosrat. (below right). In the four-part show, Nosrat travels the world, making stops in Mexico, Japan, Italy, and her home in California, to discover the properties of each of the show’s title elements. There’s cheese. There’s olive oil. There’s miso. There are tortillas. There’s salsa. And just like that we’re hungry again.

Ugly Delicious

The second season of Ugly Delicious , the David Chang hosted Netflix series debuted in March 2020, taking viewers from Istanbul, to Tokyo, to Sydney, to… Outback Steakhouse? Along the way, he tackles balancing parenthood with restaurant life, cooks with Top Chef ‘s Padma Lakshmi, rubs elbows with comedians, and gets a lesson in not calling all Indian food curries. (If you want more Chang, watch Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner , also on Netlfix, where he joins one famous friend on a food tour of a city, like Chrissy Teigen in Marrakech.)

Chef’s Table

If you’ve ever raised an eyebrow at food as art, set aside some time to watch Chef’s Table , a Netflix original docuseries. Each 50-minute episode profiles one of the world’s most extraordinary chefs (like Dominque Crenn of the Michelin-starred Atelier Crenn in San Francisco, pictured; Peruvian Virgilio Martínez, the owner of Lima’s Central restaurant; and Swede Magnus Nilsson ) as they create impossibly complicated dishes. There are four seasons, and all very much worth a watch.

Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories

Set in a tiny Tokyo diner that’s only open from midnight to 7 a.m., the fictional show follows the Midnight Diner ‘s owner and clientele as they share their trials and joys, all while eating whatever the owner, called Master, dishes up. In the diner, pork miso soup is the go-to, but Master will cook visitors anything they order, as long as he’s got the goods to make it. Episodes are a little over 20 minutes long, so it’s the most binge able of the bunch. Watch with subtitles and don’t—seriously, don’t—watch while hungry.

So stay curious everyone, and hungry! Jemma and the Mai Journeys team…

'Searching for Italy' with Stanley Tucci

When it comes to its original series, CNN has long found a sweet spot in politics and pop culture. Whether the subject is late night TV ( The Story of Late Night ), or a presidential run ( Race for the White House ), the channel has continued to expand its slate in those genres.

CNN’s new 2021-2022 slate continues that trend, but it also notably expands into new genres: Specifically into natural history programming with a show called Patagonia (like you would find on the BBC or, yes Discovery Channel), and an expansion of the travel-food-culture programming with Nomad with Carlton McCoy , a genre that began on the channel with Anthony Bourdain : Parts Unknown and has continued to flourish with Stanley Tucci : Searching For Italy .

Related Stories

Cnn's newest original series sets sights on tv history (exclusive), cnn lands kamala harris and tim walz joint interview.

Amy Entelis, the executive vp of talent and content development for CNN Worldwide, tells The Hollywood Reporter that the channel is hoping the new programming will bring in a different kind of viewer.

“We were looking to spread our wings a bit, we wanted to move into other sorts of subject areas that we have not relied upon in the past at CNN,“ Entelis says. “We could do presidents and history over and over again and it would do well, but we wanted to broaden out, and attract a different kind of audience that might want to come for Patagonia but didn’t necessarily want to come for Lincoln .”

Patagonia is slated to debut in 2022 (yes, the same year Discovery is expected to merge with CNN parent WarnerMedia ), though Entelis notes that “we spent almost a year shooting Patagonia , the year of COVID,” adding that the series will also focus on the people who live in the South American mountain region, in addition to featuring spectacular nature footage.

With Nomad , CNN finds itself facing a different challenge: Bourdain had the travel-food format down when he came to CNN, and Tucci was a renowned actor before eating across Italy. But how do you introduce someone new like McCoy?

Entelis says they were “inspired by his personal story,” from growing up in Washington D.C. and learning to cook from his grandmother, to going to culinary school, to becoming a master sommelier.

“He told that story with so much heart and passion that we felt like it could translate on the screen as he went from pace to place around the world, taking about the things that inspire him,” Entelis says. “It is not the same as hiring someone who has done it many many times, but it is a way to get a very fresh perspective, and a voice you have never heard before. Given the success we have had around Bourdain, around Tucci, we know a lot about how to make the show, and when you find a charismatic person to put at the center of it, it is a pretty good bet.”

This year’s slate also includes a timely series: Jerusalem: City of Faith and Fury . Entelis says it has been in the works for two years.

“It was always planned to be released when it was planned to come out, which was this summer,” she says. “We thought it was more or less a timeless story. We like to take stories that are ever present in the sense that it offers something bigger, deeper, and with more perspective.”

And, of course, CNN is continuing to invest in its wheelhouse of politics and pop culture, with films about Jackie Collins and the U.S womens national soccer team’s fight for pay equality, as well as series about Marilyn Monroe , the sitcom and President Johnson.

“I don’t think we have scratched the surface of either of those genres,” Entelis says.

Most avid travelers experienced a decline in their favorite hobby last year. Inspired by his own Italian heritage, Tucci is so passionate about his journey through the country and the food that he’s tasting, viewers will feel like they’re on the Amalfi Coast themselves. Season one is currently airing on CNN and available on Hulu . A second season has already been planned for 2022.

2. Down To Earth With Zac Efron

While Zac Efron’s adventure show may not be the ultimate in high-brow entertainment, the High School Musical star’s charisma and enthusiasm make Down to Earth an incredibly fun watch. The actor, joined by wellness guru Darin Olien, travels the globe, attempting to learn about sustainability and the environment. He also samples local cuisines and shamelessly indulges in the local tourist activities. All of season one is available now on Netflix, and filming for a second season has already begun.

3. Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted

Watch Gordon Ramsay travel the world, learning old-world methods of cooking from locals, in his new food-based travel show on Disney + . In Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted , viewers experience the chef abandoning his reputation as a loud, hyper-critical judge. Instead, he spends his time learning new techniques and trying new food, incredibly excited to be there and impressed by every meal he tries. Each episode features a new location and new group of welcoming locals excited to share the history of their food. There are two seasons available already, with season three set to air in mid-2021.

4. Our Planet

Narrated by David Attenborough, Netflix’s Our Planet offers an in-depth exploration of the world’s habitats, focusing on the effects of climate change and global warming. While the thesis of the documentary is science-based, the creators’ clear passion for nature shines through. The visuals are absolutely breathtaking, and the show itself is self-reflective and inspirational. With footage from 50 countries, episodes cover jungles, deserts, forests, and virtually every landscape imaginable, virtually guaranteeing a deep dive into any viewer’s favorite destination.

5. Taste The Nation With Padma Lakshmi

Explore the United States with Food Network personality Padma Lakshmi as she seeks to understand the connection between U.S. food and U.S. culture. Every episode features a different American city, where Lakshmi meets with immigrants from around the world, seeking to understand how the diversity of the country’s chefs has shaped what we define as American cuisine. This one-season series is a moving, emotional exploration of culture, heritage, and identity, available for streaming on Hulu .

6. Long Way Up

Reunited for their third joint travel adventure show, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman go on an ambitious motorcycle ride in Apple TV’s Long Way Up . Starting in Ushuaia, a city at the tip of South America, the two friends ride for more than 100 days and 13,000 miles, crossing borders and country lines, making their way into Argentina, Chile, and Peru, all the way up to Central America and Mexico. Fans of Long Way Round and Long Way Down will love this third installment, all of which is available for streaming.

7. Street Food

For another food-based travel show, try Netflix’s Street Food , and its two available seasons, Street Food: Asia and Street Food: Latin America . Each episode takes place in a different city, with interviews of three to four street food chefs and their featured dishes. This show takes a deep dive not only into the cuisine, but primarily into the people who make it, emphasizing the journey of the individual cooks. The featured dishes are often region-specific and emblematic of the conditions and circumstances of both the city and the chef. The show focuses on the vendors’ backstories, teaching viewers about local poverty, history, culture, and identity.

These are just a starting point; there are a lot more shows out there worth a look. All you have to do is go on a surf vacation from the comfort of your couch.

Editor’s Note: Can’t get enough virtual travel? Jordan Palmer has more on Beeyonder , the new travel company created so anyone can travel the world.

Image of Greg Robertson

Greg Robertson has worked as an editor and writer for some of the top newspapers and websites in the country, leading him to live all across the country. He now calls Las Vegas home, but has journeyed from the sunshine of California and the rain in Seattle, to the humidity of Arkansas and the snow of Minnesota. His travels have taken him to Puerto Vallarta, Costa Rica, Spain, and the Dominican Republic, but he's happiest at home with his wife, two daughters, and dog.

I've Watched Basically Every Cooking Show On Netflix, And Some Are Better Than Others — These 15, However, Are Perfection

I've watched a few of these multiple times, and I honestly have zero regrets.

Ross Yoder

BuzzFeed Staff

Ya know what there's truly no shortage of in this life? Netflix cooking shows. I mean, type "food" into the search bar, and the results feel pretty never-ending.

Grid of many different food shows popping on a Netflix search

Lucky for you, food shows are baaaaasically what I live for. As someone who writes about food and cooks for a living, I take my food content very seriously.

When I plop myself on the couch after a long day of work and mindlessly scroll through Netflix to find something to watch, I want to a) be entertained, or b) learn about something I probably wouldn't have investigated otherwise...and in a perfect world, a show will accomplish both at the same time.

I'm happy to report that all the shows in this list fully fulfill one of those two categories — and several hit that sweet spot between both. So whether you're looking to laugh out loud, drool all over your TV, or learn about something altogether extraordinary, I have a feeling you'll find it in one of my all-time favorite Netflix food shows.

1. salt fat acid heat.

A freshly baked focaccia coming out of the oven, while host Samin Nosrat bites into it and smiles while she enjoys it

Type of show: Documentary series

Number of seasons: 1

WHY I LOVE IT: When Netflix announced it was adapting one of my favorite "cookbooks" into a limited series, I just about lost my mind — several rewatches later, I can confirm it's still one of the most wholesome and worthwhile cooking shows out there.

new travel food shows 2022

View this video on YouTube

Samin Nosrat is basically my culinary hero, and once you watch her simply infectious (and equally informative) series, you'll understand exactly why. Nosrat's belief is that once you've mastered the four cornerstones of good cooking (hint: see title), you can cook anything. As someone who cooks pretty much daily, I'd echo her sentiments 100% — in fact, this series (and her book of the same name) are two things I always suggest for anyone looking to get more comfortable in the kitchen.

Salt Fat Acid Heat doesn't aim to venture where "no other cooking show" has ever ventured before. What it does so beautifully is capture Nosrat's genuine love for both the art of cooking and act of enjoying good food, and it broadcasts that passion in a way that's palpable. Have you ever literally cried watching someone bite into a warm piece of freshly baked focaccia? Watch this show, and I can nearly guarantee you'll be able to check that off your bucket list.

2. Nadiya's Time to Eat

Nadiya Hussain from "Nadiya's Time to Eat" talking about her kids demanding pancakes from her on weekdays, and an easy recipe she came up with instead

Type of show: Cooking show

WHY I LOVE IT: Considering she's one of the most beloved Great British Baking Show contestants in the show's history, it's no surprise that Nadiya Hussain's charming, actually helpful, and all-around mouthwatering cooking show is a 10/10.

new travel food shows 2022

Nadiya's Time to Eat is all about "time-smart" tips and tricks for getting delicious food on the table as quickly as possible, all in an effort to make time for — as the title suggests — more important things. Like eating! Unlike other cooking shows that tend to speak to home-cooking enthusiasts as their target audience, Nadiya empathizes with the average person just trying to get a good meal on the table. Her food is undeniably delicious, but you won't have to use a ton of effort or time to make any of it.

In the Nadiya Cinematic Universe (which I can very much get behind), you should also check out her newest Netflix show, Nadiya Bakes , which premiered in 2021. For mega fans of Nadiya's Time to Eat , you can also purchase her cookbook, Time to Eat: Delicious Meals for Busy Lives , which includes many of the recipes featured on the show.

3. Somebody Feed Phil

Phil in "Somebody Feed Phil" eating street food while telling people on the street, "This is fantastic, people. It's so good!!!"

Type of show: Documentary series

Number of seasons: 4

WHY I LOVE IT: In the Bourdain-adjacent world of shows that explore how food, travel, and culture relate to one another, Somebody Feed Phil strikes that perfect balance between "endlessly watchable" and "genuinely informative."

new travel food shows 2022

Phil Rosenthal (best known as the creator of the mega-popular Everybody Loves Raymond ) believes that "food is the great connector," and his travel-bug-inducing show is a beautiful testament to that.

The places he visits and the foods he samples in this docuseries are nothing short of exceptional, and they run the gamut from tasting fried lobster in the Mississippi Delta to harvesting lotus stems in Vietnam. That said, even with all that deliciousness, Rosenthal is the true star of the show here. His natural charisma and curiosity make him the perfect host for a show of this nature, and as feel-good as every episode is, some will downright surprise you with just how moving they are.

4. Waffles + Mochi

Three screenshots from "Waffles + Mochi" on Netflix, featuring Gaten Matarazzao — from "Stranger Things" — making a Stranger Things-related food pun

Type of show: Family-friendly

WHY I LOVE IT: Waffles + Mochi is truly as heartwarming as it gets, and each and every episode feels like the warmest, coziest hug imaginable. Yes, that's coming from an adult.

new travel food shows 2022

Waffles + Mochi follows the title characters — two puppets from "the land of frozen foods" — as they learn all about the wonders of the rest of their grocery store. Their teacher is none other than Michelle Obama . Yep, literally the former First Lady.

Look, even as a fully grown adult, I found this show to be entertaining, heartfelt, and incredibly informative. For the kids, there's no shortage of adorable puppets, mesmerizing visuals, and (no pun intended) easy-to-digest information on foods they might be totally unfamiliar with. For the adults, the series tackles some really important subject matter, like the importance of learning about culturally diverse foods and supporting sustainable food practices. The best part of all? Between the former First Lady herself and guest stars like Zach Galifianakis and Rashida Jones , the cast is beyond star-studded.

If your kids become Waffles + Mochi fans, you can even order one of the show's three companion books, including Follow That Food and the show's official cookbook , which feature a plethora of kid-friendly recipes that just so happen to be healthy.

5. High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America

Host of "High on the Hog" talking to a woman about okra at a market, saying, "Okra is African, because it made the journey with us"

Number of seasons: 1

WHY I LOVE IT: High on the Hog takes the standard format of a food-driven docuseries and turns it into an inspiring showcase of the legacy and importance of African cuisine in American food and culture — and it's as visually stunning as it is raw and emotional.

new travel food shows 2022

As host Stephen Satterfield says in the show's trailer, "A lot of American food has its roots in African American food, traditions, and ingenuity." Based on the book of the same name, High on the Hog eloquently proves Satterfield's point over the course of four inspiring episodes, and each one chips away at just how deep-rooted African American cuisine is in the foods and traditions that grew to define America.

In my opinion, the most incredible aspect of this show is — and realistically, there are many to choose from — its unique ability to convey the emotional connection between the dishes explored and their unique, sometimes painful histories. And if you're yearning for more after finishing up the first season, you'll be thrilled to know that the show was renewed for a second season in August 2021.

6. The Great British Baking Show

A "Great British Baking Show" host asking contestant Liam if he's ever made a certain element before, and him responded with wide, scared eyes...then laughing hysterically and saying that he's "joking"

Type of show: Competition show

Number of seasons: 9

WHY I LOVE IT: Even if cooking competition shows aren't normally your cup of tea, GBBS puts a wholesome twist on a conventional format — and honestly, I dare you not to smile from ear to ear while you watch it. Spoiler alert: It's impossible.

new travel food shows 2022

If you're somehow not on the Great British Baking Show bandwagon yet, I'm sincerely jealous of the nine seasons (!!!) of pure, unadulterated bliss you'll get to enjoy from beginning to end. GBBS was a bit of a "cultural reset," so to speak — it's a far cry from the shows like Chopped and Top Chef that've grown to define the modern-day cooking competition.

Instead of manufacturing drama through ridiculous challenges and occasionally cruel judging, GBBS relies on intimate portraits of its contestants, employs hosts and judges who feel like family, and leans heavily into the British charm to hook its viewers. Nine seasons later, it's clear that they're doing something right. It's feel-good TV at its best, and TBH, I can't think of a single season that's at all subpar. Each and every one is *chef's kiss*.

7. Chef's Table

Chef Grant Achatz in an episode of "Chef's Table," saying, "For the first time ever, I think I can be a chef without tasting," pointing to his head and saying, "It's up here," then pointing to his mouth and saying, "It's not here."

Number of seasons: 6

WHY I LOVE IT: From the highest Michelin-starred highs to the truly unthinkable lows, Chef's Table beautifully captures the inspiring (and occasionally heartbreaking) stories of some of the most talented chefs in the world.

new travel food shows 2022

The chefs featured in Chef's Table are (and I don't say this lightly) nothing short of sheer brilliance. This docuseries offers an intimate, jaw-droppingly gorgeous look into each of their lives and decorated careers — and it does so with a whole lot of humanity, too.

On the outside, each and every episode is visually stunning. I mean, it's so stunning you could probably cry from the sheer beauty of the food these chefs are able to whip up on a nightly basis — and it has multiple Outstanding Cinematography Emmy noms to prove it. However, on the inside , this series also packs in lots of heart. Even the most successful chefs lead lives that are anything but glamorous, and Chef's Table authentically captures exactly what it means to devote your entire life to the culinary world — and what it's like to reach the very top.

8. Nailed It

Nicole Byer describing a Rapunzel cake as "scary," and that "no one's coming to rescue her" while laughing

Type of show: Competition show

WHY I LOVE IT: Watch it because Nicole Byer might just be the most hilarious TV host ever, or watch it because the baking fails actually make you laugh out loud. Either way, this show is hysterical, joyful perfection.

new travel food shows 2022

Nailed It doesn't claim to be the best cooking competition show out there, or the most original. Instead, it delivers on one component better than any other show out there: the laughs. Good lord, the laughs just never stop.

The premise here is simple: In a straight-from-Pinterest twist, contestants are tasked with recreating some seriously complex cakes and confections. I should add that these bakers are anything but professional, so the results are straight-up LOL-worthy. Don't expect Great British Baking Show -level reveals here — Nailed It takes pride in the weird, wacky, and altogether WTF creations.

If the six available seasons aren't enough for you, there's a seemingly never-ending supply of spinoffs, from holiday specials to international versions from all across the globe. If baking fails are your love language, I'm pleased to report that you'll simply never run out of content.

Watch Nailed It here .

9. The Chef Show

Tom Holland slurping down an oyster with Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr.

Number of seasons: 2

WHY I LOVE IT: Come for the impressive celebrity guests (read: the literal Avengers) and stay for the hosts' genuine chemistry...in addition to all that mouthwatering food.

new travel food shows 2022

Tiny bit of backstory here: Jon Favreau's 2014 film Chef was loosely based on the life of Roy Choi, whose food truck Kogi basically became synonymous with the food truck movement. While working on the film as Favreau's culinary advisor, the two became close, and thus the inspiring, charming-as-hell, and super-bingeable The Chef Show was born. Two seasons and four volumes later, it's still just as good as Episode 1.

Even if you're not a cooking die-hard, this show has a little bit of something for everyone. If you're into travel, the pair ventures to some pretty amazing locales to find the best food out there. Are celebs your thing? With guests like Gwyneth Paltrow, Seth Rogen, and even the literal Avengers, there's no shortage. Both of these elements combine with Choi and Favreau's delightful chemistry to create one of the best food-focused docuseries that Netflix has ever released.

10. Taco Chronicles

Caption saying, "It's because it's perfect" over a picture of juicy roasted pork, and a chef exclaiming, "Who doesn't want a taco?" and shrugging while smiling

Numbers of seasons: 2

WHY I LOVE IT: If you're a taco lover — and really, who isn't — there's a whole lot you probably don't realize about them. Taco Chronicles goes deep into the histories and traditions surrounding some of the most popular ones. Warning: It WILL make you hungry.

new travel food shows 2022

At first glance, Taco Chronicles is food porn — and it's reaaaaaally great food porn at that. I mean, visuals of pork being roasted over a hefty open flame and juices running down the side of a homemade corn tortilla?! If that's not heaven, I don't know what is. However, the show goes much deeper than just showcasing some really tantalizing shots of tacos: It also serves as a rich history of the cultures and traditions associated with an internationally adored food.

Each of the 13 available episodes dives head first into one variety of taco, and they get really specific. For example, the pilot goes deep into a taco that lots of folks already know and love — tacos al pastor. While it's one of the most popular taco varieties in Mexico City, you may not know that its roots trace back to when Mediterranean immigrants settled in Mexico. Tacos al pastor became the Mexican equivalent of popular Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes, like Turkish kebabs and Greek gyros. And yes, along with all the fascinating information comes a whole lot of mouthwatering shots of freshly shaved roasted pork. Because duh.

11. School of Chocolate

Host Amaury Guichon asking students if they're "up to the challenge," met with blank stares from the contestant...and Amaury responding with, "You should run"

WHY I LOVE IT: I can pretty much guarantee you've seen chocolatier Amaury Guichon's mega-viral videos on some form of social media — this competition show builds on that content with a twist that's so refreshingly wholesome.

new travel food shows 2022

Let's cut to the chase — the twist here is that, drum roll please, no one goes home! Yep, not a single contestant is eliminated in School of Chocolate , and honestly, I think it adds a lot to the show. Since there are only eight contestants, you end up learning about each and every one of them, and getting to watch each chef grow and improve over the course of the season is oddly satisfying.

If you've ever seen one of his countless viral videos , you know that Amaury Guichon is truly blessed with his ability to make just about anything out of chocolate. His Netflix show reveals that as good as he is at actually making the stuff, he's just as good — if not better — at teaching others to do so. Seriously, Guichon is a gifted mentor, and watching him eloquently teach hard lessons to his students is just as entertaining as watching him build...IDK, an entire tiger out of chocolate or something.

Watch School of Chocolate here .

12. The Final Table

A plate of beautiful food with a judge asking a contestant, "Have you reinvented anything?" and then responding, "No"

WHY I LOVE IT: It's one part Olympics, one part Iron Chef ...but mostly it's just a wildly impressive cooking competition starring mesmerizing chefs from all over the globe.

new travel food shows 2022

I pretty much grew up with Iron Chef — anyone else? If you loved that show like I did, I can basically guarantee you'll be obsessed with The Final Table . Sadly, the show was never renewed for a second season...but the first season was a very worthwhile watch regardless.

In this cooking competition, chefs from all over the world are paired up, and they go head to head with other teams in a series of challenges. Each episode hones in on a different country, and the chefs are tasked with creating an elevated version of that country's "national dish." More so than other competition shows, I found myself rooting for my favorites with all my might, and the drama they face throughout is honestly unreal. I mean, can you imagine the pressure of trying to reimagine your own country's national dish and potentially failing?! It's incredible television from beginning to end.

13. Ugly Delicious

David Chang eating a restaurant and admitting that the service is "bright," with guest Ali Wong. Ali says, "Yeah...like, too bright. Where you worry that the quality is bad. you want them to ignore you!" and David laughs

WHY I LOVE IT: As the title suggests, Ugly Delicious focuses on foods from all over the world that are pretty hard to beat when it comes to taste, even if they're not the most aesthetically pleasing. It's witty as hell, and if you ask me, I think the food still looks pretty darn delicious.

new travel food shows 2022

David Chang's Ugly Delicious is many things — it's a travel show that showcases culturally rich destinations, a sociological deep dive into internationally beloved foods, and most importantly, it's just a really great time. Chang himself is a masterful host, and when you add in incredible guests like Padma Lakshmi and Ali Wong, things get even better.

Each episode focuses on a very specific type of food: In the first season's "fried chicken" episode, Chang samples fried chicken from basically everywhere — from Nashville hot chicken to KFC's China menu, and he even touches on the complex and painful history of "soul food" in America. Ugly Delicious is one of those rare shows that'll make you feel more informed as you move through life while also entertaining you to your core, and in my book, that's a total win.

14. Street Food: Asia and Street Food: Latin America

Chef talking to the camera, saying, "I am meticulous about every dish that I serve," and then shot of her cooking in a wok over an open flame at a street food vendor, saying she "cooks every dish herself"

Number of seasons: 2 separate series

WHY I LOVE IT:

new travel food shows 2022

In 2019, Netflix released Street Food: Asia , a docuseries from the creators of Chef's Table that highlighted various chefs across Asia who devoted their lives to street food. The show was so successful that they filmed a second season in various Latin American countries, spanning everywhere from Argentina to Mexico. The dishes this show showcases are possibly some of the most droolworthy I've ever seen, but the inspiring stories of those who work tirelessly to serve their communities day in and day out are the real draw here.

As awe-inspiring as the food is, the featured chefs that make it are 10 times more so. Since the dishes in Street Food practically make me want to lick my own TV, that's really saying something. In the first season alone, you'll follow a Thai chef who struggled for years until she finally earned a Michelin star, and even a Vietnamese chef who puts her son through college by selling her father's recipe for snails. Each episode is better than the next, and I for one am anxiously awaiting the next drop of Street Food episodes. It truly can't come soon enough.

15. Fresh, Fried and Crispy

Host biting into a burger and leaning heavily on a table, pausing, and saying, "Me and the burger are having a moment"

WHY I LOVE IT: It's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with ONLY fried food, plus a host that I'd give an A+ to if I could. So basically, it's perfection.

new travel food shows 2022

You may know Daym Drops from his viral YouTube food reviews , but if you don't, let's just say that he's got more charisma in his pinky than most people have in their entire body ...so it's no surprise that he makes one hell of a good TV host. In his new Netflix series, Daym visits restaurants across the United States in search of the best fried food out there. TBH, I'd like to visit (and eat at) each and every stop he makes on his journey.

The show itself is campy, tongue-in-cheek, and utterly enjoyable from beginning to end. It's incredibly reminiscent of a very 2022 "Triple D" in terms of its willingness to showcase incredible dishes from just about anywhere, but the fact that it only features fried foods makes things even more decadent. All I know is that after watching Episode 2, I'm planning a trip to Savannah to taste that deep-fried peach ASAP.

The 20 best cooking shows on Netflix

The big red streamer offers a vast menu of delicious fare.

Courtesy of Netflix (2); Tobias Koch/Netflix

Barbecue season is here and Netflix is grilling up a big, juicy plate of cooking content. The way to a person's heart is through their stomach, and you will fall in love with these food-focused series. Offering both ebullient entertainment (see: Is It Cake? ) as well as educated edible analysis (see: The Great British Baking Show and Somebody Feed Phil ) Netflix holds a special place in the hearts of home cooks and food enthusiasts alike.

So, unhinge your jaw and prepare to ingest some premium content: It's time to chow down on EW's list of the 20 best cooking shows on Netflix.

Bake Squad (2021–present)

Bake Squad puts the spotlight on talent, and while there is an element of "competition" (the client has to choose one of the creations), it's all very good-natured. Led by a respected figure in the cooking world (author, baker, and Milk Bar founder Christina Tosi) the Squad is made up of four amazingly artistic, wholly unique bakers creating awesome feats of flour, butter, and sugar.

An exploding cake? Yes! A floating cake? Why not? How about a life-sized chocolate piano, or a giant chocolate dragon egg, or a supersized smash cake? Let's do this! Watching this show feels like hanging out in the kitchen at a really cool bakery, spying on all of the mind-blowingly elaborate techniques. Truly, no idea is too crazy for Bake Squad, and we love them for it.

Best Leftovers Ever! (2020)

A makeover show for leftovers? We can get behind that. Now, a show all about those bits and bobs left in your fridge from last night might not seem like the most highbrow offering on the Netflix cooking show menu, but it just might be the most important. Why? Well, as you probably know, billions of pounds of food is wasted every year in the United States alone — but not if Best Leftovers Ever can help it.

Hosted by actress Jackie Tohn ( Melanie "MelRose" Rosen of GLOW ) , creativity rules here, whether you're turning dinner into breakfast, kid's meals into cocktail apps, or Mexican fare into…gnocchi? By amping up the flavor and presentation, the revolving cast of enthusiastic competitors (an assortment of real folks, from home cooks to personal chefs, battling for a $10,000 prize) really does manage to transform fridge-chilled blah to restaurant-ready yum.

Breakfast Lunch, & Dinner (2019)

Noodles with Weird Barbie ( Kate McKinnon ) in Cambodia? Couscous with Chrissy Teigen in Marrakesh? Yes, please! This show is a slightly decadent and occasionally ridiculous pleasure, like traveling with a true friend. No stress, no drama, no worries about calorie counts, and no pressure to learn stuff. In fact, one of the first things Teigen says upon greeting host David Chang in her (amazing) Moroccan villa is "I shall teach you…no, I won't."

And while Chang + celebrity guest + traveling to a fabulous destination while eating tons of delicious food might have been a clever way to get Netflix to pay for some glam R and R (kidding?), we don't mind one bit, because the result (four jam-packed episodes) is pure escapist fun.

The Chef Show (2019–present)

We admit it: The Chef Show gives us the warm fuzzies. Effortlessly transferring the 2014 movie Chef 's look, feel, color palette, and heart from the big to the small screen, producer and star Jon Favreau connects food to friendship in every frame. Reuniting with his buddy and producing partner, Roy Choi (whose fusion taco truck, Kogi, served as Chef's inspo), this series feels like a true labor of love.

Choi, a creative wizard who taught Favreau how to cook like a pro for the film (bringing him up to speed on everything from knife skills to prep to finishing touches), shares the screen with the actor on all sorts of culinary adventures, from baking bread at Tartine to assembling a giant lasagna. The Chef Show is like a food-series-meets-buddy-comedy, and the result is as irresistible as their famous grilled cheese.

Chef's Table (2015–2019)

An essential staple in any foodie's streaming pantry, Chef's Table is known for stunningly shot in-depth episodes focusing on fantastic fare — and the lives of the cooks who create it. Following one chef per episode, our writer called this globe-spanning series the "gold standard" of cooking shows , "presenting gorgeous dishes and ingredients with sumptuous cinematography that makes every culinary creation look like a beautiful work of art."

Chef's Table has spawned many spin-offs as well, from barbecue to French cuisine. In other words, this Netflix original series makes for perfect dinner-time viewing, whether you're eating cold pizza or a four-course meal.

Flavorful Origins (2020–present)

Remember what we said about Netflix taking a serious approach to cooking shows? Exhibit A would have to be Flavorful Origins. Spanning 40 episodes across three seasons, this Chinese docuseries goes deep, y'all. And you can forget about sweet 'n sour anything; this is a crash course in authentic Chinese cuisine, though the episode names ("Gluten," "Mutton," "Cooked Chopped Entrails of Sheep," "Tofu Cake," etc.) probably gave this away.

The seasons are divided by region ("Chaoshan," "Yunnan," "Gansu") and feel like traveling across China with a knowledgeable guide. A mini cooking school via quick-hit sub-15-minute episodes, this subtitled dive into the awe-inspiring varieties of the nation's food is doggedly un-commercial and a total treat.

Fresh Fried and Crispy (2021)

Impressively bearded, irrepressibly charming, and absolutely willing to take giant bites of uber-crunchy food on camera, Daym Drops is the host with the most enthusiasm. This YouTuber turned Netflix food fanatic travels the U.S. in pursuit of the best in fried fare, sampling heart-stopping delicacies like fried mac 'n cheese, fried Oreos, and something called a "Whale Burger" (which we're not sure we even want to know about).

Drops isn't just super funny, he's fearless, too. Watching him bravely bite into a deep-fried "Rocky Mountain Oyster" (if you know, you know) on the "Denver" episode is truly squirm-inducing fun.

The Great British Baking Show (2010–present)

Mark Bourdillon/Netflix

From its origins on BBC to its first American spot ( PBS ) to its current home on Netflix, everyone's favorite U.K. import continues to highlight British culinary curiosities (Devonshire Splits, Bakewell Tarts, Maids of Honour?) along with the inherent magic of turning basic ingredients into art — and things have only gotten tastier as the series continues.

Because while Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith are still judges (if it ain't broke…), Matt Lucas has been replaced by beloved British morning show host Alison Hammond (known for completely disarming Harrison Ford ). P.S.: the chemistry between Hammond and cohost Noel Fielding is like a Victoria Sponge with extra cream, which is to say, perfect.

Iron Chef: Quest For an Iron Legend (2022)

Who will win the Golden Knife? This Netflix reboot of the Food Network staple proves that Iron Chefs never die, they just get resurrected. Famed host/writer/nerd Alton Brown again takes the reins alongside Top Chef champ Kristen Kish and actor/martial artist Mark Dacascos (returning as "the Chairman") for play-by-plays, oohing and aahing as celebrity chefs face off against, uh, regular ones.

And, yes, this batch of Iron Chefs is on fire: Gabriela Cámara, Curtis Stone, and Dominique Crenn bring stellar credentials from around the globe alongside legendary restaurateur/best-selling author Marcus Samuelsson and one of the OG PBS chefs, Ming Tsai. Together, they bring the noise to Kitchen Stadium once more.

Is It Cake? (2022–present)

Yet another successful meme-to-series transformation (see: Nailed It! ), Is It Cake? scratches our itch for fun while serving up major eye candy…make that eye cake (which admittedly doesn't roll off the tongue as well). Edible optical illusions taken to the Nth degree, this show is an invitation to marvel at an elite force of skilled bakers pulling off the impossible: Disguising dessert as a roll of toilet paper? A shoe? A cash register with money sticking out of it? Yup, and it's all made out of cake!

This is the kind of show you have to see to believe (again, the cash register , guys), and when you do see it, you won't be able to look away. Even if you start yelling something along the lines of "NO WAY!" at the screen, it's okay. We get it. With his mix of aw-shucks sincerity and a slightly sinister grin, Saturday Night Live cast member Mikey Day is the ideal host for such bizarre (yet tasty) proceedings. A third season is now streaming.

K Food Show (2022–present)

Divided into three "seasons" (series?) with just two or three episodes in each installment, this is an incredibly mouth-watering cooking show that we have trouble watching on an empty stomach. Each "season" focuses on a different Korean delicacy ( A Nation of Kimchi , A Nation of Banchan , and A Nation of Broth ), allocating time to fully explore each.

And even though kimchi alone — with its rich history, array of techniques, and variations — is worthy of an epic four-hour feature film, these two sub-60-minute episodes will have to do. K Food Show is a beautiful travelogue of a fascinating country with some seriously incredible food, and watching it is like taking a dream vacation without ever leaving home.

Nadiya's Time to Eat (2019)

Cookbook author Nadiya Hussain, a Great British Baking Show winner, is not just a warm, friendly, creative force in the kitchen, she's also an incredibly soothing presence for new cooks. Time to Eat is the kind of show that not only makes you think, "Hey, I could do that," but "Hey, I WANT to do that," presenting a series of healthy and surprising dishes that are both mouth-watering and super cool (peanut chicken traybake and ingenious noodles in a jar are just two examples).

Hussain, unlike some TV chefs (who shall not be named), never forgets that real home cooks have time-crunched lives, needing to fit meal prep somewhere between jobs, school, commutes, chores, and everything else. Parents (and all busy folks!) around the world owe her a standing ovation.

Nailed It! (2018–present)

Part comedy, part baking show, and 100 percent unbridled silliness, Nailed It! was the first show to spring from a popular Pinterest meme: In this case, home bakers posting snaps of their extremely messed-up creations alongside their inspirations, summing up the ridiculousness of the entire Martha Stewart era in one neat moment. Not to get philosophical, but in these broken and crumbling creations, do we perhaps see…ourselves? Setting impossibly high standards, trying our best, and failing publicly?

Observing DIYers attempt ridiculously complex challenges and with lackluster results isn't just funny, it's also inspiring. (We raise our flour-dusted fists in solidarity.) Because if the show was simply about laughing at people's screw-ups, it would be like biting into one of the dried-out layer cakes the contestants serve to the judges — a tough sell. Enter comedian (and non-baker) Nicole Byer (and her pal, real-life pastry genius Jacques Torres), bringing the necessary warmth needed to set the right tone. Byer's willingness to laugh without coming off as cruel is key to the show's success.

Salt Fat Acid Heat (2018)

Host/cook/author Samin Nosrat's opening statement, "I've spent my entire life in pursuit of flavor," serves as the guiding principle for every moment that follows. Nosrat's brilliantly clear idea — breaking down cooking into four essential elements (the salt, fat, acid, and heat of the title) — is one of those masterful concepts so perfect that you wonder where it's been all your life. Understand these principles and bam , you've unlocked the secret to exceptional meals.

So if you're a newbie, clueless, bored, or simply mystified about the whole "cooking" thing, you owe it to yourself to check this out. One of the shining jewels in the Netflix foodie crown, we give this program (and Nosrat) all the Michelin stars.

Somebody Feed Phil (2018–present)

It may not sound like much on paper — a middle-aged Hollywood producer ( Everybody Loves Raymond , among others) wanders the world, eating. But there's just something about Phil Rosenthal that makes him an ideal host. Is it his personable, big-hearted, and curious nature? Or his wide-eyed pleasure over the deliciousness of whatever he's eating? No matter the reason, the effect is life-affirming humble charm, with the show devoting a large chunk of time to local charities while showcasing Rosenthal's boundless enthusiasm for every taste, sight, and cultural tidbit from his destinations (Austin to Croatia, Seoul to London).

Comedy cameos from his pals ( Ray Romano , Patton Oswalt , Allison Janney , the late Paul Reubens ) are icing on the cake along with a healthy helping of humor.

Street Food (2019–2022)

If you've ever dreamed of eating your way across the world (guilty as charged), Street Food has got you covered. From O'ahu to Lima, Portland to Osaka, this show is a glorious mash-up of food and travel. Viewers can rack up (honorary) frequent-flier miles by witnessing a wild assortment of treats from the streets (vendors, markets, carts, local spots), all of it as delicious and unpretentious as it gets.

Brought to you by Chef's Table masterminds Brian McGinn and David Gelb, this series also puts the spotlight on the cooks (a fascinating bunch!) and their stories.

Where to watch Street Food : Netflix

Sugar Rush (2018–2020)

As the title literally promises, Sugar Rush is a show about making outrageously colorful and decadent desserts in a stress-inducingly short amount of time. This pressure-cooker of a show is a nail-biting, crave-worthy mad dash to the finish line.

One fun perk (besides feasting your eyes on the craziest creations this side of Wonka) is that one of the judges is our favorite inventor, Candace Nelson (creator of the Sprinkles Cupcakes vending machines, thank you very much). Silly, frantic, over-the-top, and probably not very good for you, this show will satisfy your sweetest cravings.

Taco Chronicles (2019–2022)

If you've ever waited in line at a taco truck, you can attest to the infinite possibilities this hand-held mini-meal holds. Bean, queso, guac? Nopales, pico, shrimp? Chorizo, carnitas, fajitas? Yes, chef! All of which is to say that tacos are an obvious subject for a docuseries. The story ideas are as endless as the recipes, and this cooking show does it all, showing off gorgeous variations of the dish from around the world while diving into the rich history.

From birria to asada, puffy to pescado, no matter how much you think you know about tacos, we guarantee you will learn something new. (Like, al pastor came from…shawarma?) Originally from Mexico (where it was known as Las Crónicas del Taco ), this series has a ton of fun with the subject, including a couple of episodes narrated in Spanish by the tacos themselves , in which they (sensually?) declare things like, "take a look at me, enjoy me"?!

Where to watch Taco Chronicles : Netflix

Ugly Delicious (2018–present)

Ugly Delicious , the celebrated culinary travel show starring the charismatic food fanatic (and Momofuku founder) David Chang, brings some serious credentials to the table. Produced by Oscar -winning director Morgan Neville , this is the show to beat, combining striking photography, juicy details, comic touches, and sheer passionate energy that can't be matched. Taking on one topic per episode (tacos, pizza, Thanksgiving) and going deep, the series revels in the finer points and never fails to make us hungry.

As EW's writer puts it , Ugly Delicious "uses food as a gateway for tackling misconceptions, breaking down cultural barriers, and finding common ground in shared experiences." Not only that, but season 2 reveals a nervous new-dad-to-be Chang preparing for his first child in the chef-iest way possible: learning how to make baby food.

Waffles and Mochi (2021–2022)

Globe-trotting puppets, delicious healthy food, and a glowing Michelle Obama ? If you don't have kids, you may have missed this little slice of happiness. But hey, it's never too late to catch up — and we highly recommend you do — because this show is 100 percent pure yum . Did we mention it also features two of the cutest cooking show hosts ever? Live from the freezer, it's Waffles (a blue furry monster with waffle ears) and Mochi (a tiny, baby-voiced pink ball)!

With a supporting cast of characters that includes a singing tomato (who sounds suspiciously like Sia), guest visits from Jack Black , Rashida Jones , Zach Galifianakis , and Gaten Matarazzo , plus celeb chefs like Samin Nosrat and José Andrés, what's not to like?

Woman choosing a travel show on Netflix to watch at home.

If you’re traveling right now, or if some of these shows are not available in your country, use a VPN to access them without any restrictions. To play the shows, open up your VPN app and select a server located in a different state. If the show is available in your country, but you’re currently traveling internationally, choose the server of your home country to enjoy the show.

Now let me tell you why these Netflix travel shows are worth watching and don’t blame me if you get hooked on some (or all) of them.

The best travel shows on Netflix

Lol

The list is divided into travel shows or documentaries focused on nature, food, dark tourism, cycling and cars, photography, family travels, and specific destinations. Enjoy it!

Down to Earth

Down to Earth documentary follows Zac Efron, the actor, and wellness expert Darin Olien as they explore healthy and sustainable practices across different cultures. This documentary showcases the diversity and creativity seen across the globe to make the most of one’s resources.

It’s intriguing and can be inspiring, not only about travel but how we think of sustainability and health.

Street Food Asia

Sometimes the most accessible way to connect to a different culture is food. Asian food holds a special place in the world regarding street food and is probably one of the most universally beloved cuisines today. Street Food Asia takes you on a food journey across Asia and Southeast Asia’s best food cities, including Bangkok, Delhi, Osaka, and Singapore.

Street Food Asia is one of our fave travel shows on Netflix. We love Asia and Asian delights you can only find from street vendors. If you have never visited this part of the world, watch this show, and it will open your mind to a new world of flavors, aromas, and ways of life. If you are craving an Asia trip, watch it and plan international travel soon.

Another great travel and food show on Netflix about food culture.

Somebody Feed Phil

In this series, we follow the creator of Everybody Loves Raymond, Phil Rosenthal, as he explores world cuisines and meets the locals. Phil’s upbeat attitude is probably one of the best parts of the Somebody Feed Phil travel show together with a lot of food scenes that will help your plan your future trip to incredible destinations including Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

On this Netflix travel show, you will visit cities like Bangkok , spend days in Mexico City , see Lisbon , and many more. Well-known travel destinations are pictured with flavors and a local touch.

High on The Hog: Culinary Journey From Africa to America

This show explores African American soul food and its long journey from Africa to North America. It has been dubbed the most engaging history of African American cuisine. It traces the process of cultivating, harvesting, cooking, and serving the food that enslaved Africans brought with them to the States.

This Netflix cultural travel and food show will take you on a true gastronomic journey.

Restaurants on the Edge

As you might be able to guess from the name of the show, these hour-long episodes take us to restaurants that are located in some of the most stunning locations in the world but are struggling with their menus and dishes. They are located on the edge of the world but are also on the edge of closing down.

This travel show on Netflix pictures unique locations and a bit of drama, as you can expect.

Netflix shows about travel, cycling and cars

Biking Borders

This one is for lovers of slow traveling and less-known countries. Two friends go on a 15,000 km bicycle journey worldwide, including the Balkans, Central Asia, and other countries, to build a school in Guatemala.

Rob and I love cycling, so this Netflix travel documentary series is tremendously appealing to us. Biking Borders is also an excellent travel inspiration for those who dream of traveling by bike or going on a cycling holiday. And if this is you, read our article about cycling on Taiwan’s East Coast and cycling in Spain .

Pedal the World

This is another Netflix travel documentary that portrays a world tour on wheels, but this time our protagonist visits 22 countries during his year-long journey, searching for the meaning in life and discovering something new in each country.

Pedal the World is an inspiring and realistic epic road trip that might give you ideas of how you want to spend your life and what really matters.

Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Road Trip

Paul Hollywood studies the ties between popular cars in Europe and their local culture and identity as an actor and a baker. In this short but educational Netflix documentary , Hollywood will visit France, Germany, and Italy.

This isn’t your Netflix show if you are looking for food and baking goods. But if you like cars, speed, a bit of history and traveling in Europe, you will enjoy the ride.

Netflix travel shows about a specific destination

Katla

This travel series focuses on Iceland, specifically the volcano Katla , which began constantly erupting just recently. The show has eight episodes and does a wonderful job portraying Iceland’s breathtaking beauty . Katla serves as a great reminder of all that we still don’t know about the earth.

This Netflix travel show is a powerful trigger for wanderlust, and it will make you want to book a trip to Iceland as soon as possible.

Magic Andes is one of the top travel shows on Netflix right now.

Magic Andes

A documentary following five characters from the Andes, South America’s breathtaking mountains. It is a fascinating series that highlights real people living in communities located under the mountains and paints a nuanced picture of the region of Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia .

Banner for a Netflix travel documentary focused on Guatemala's rich landscape and culture.

Guatemala: Heart of the Mayan World

This documentary focuses on Guatemala’s rich landscape and culture, the territory where 2000 years ago, the fascinating Mayan civilization collapsed. The Mayan influence is still all over Guatemala and Central America, and this documentary does an amazing job of connecting the dots between the past and the present.

Guatemala: Heart of the Mayan World is an inspiring Netflix travel documentary that will add interesting facts to your travel knowledge, and it might make you want to explore more of Latin America.

Zulu Man in Japan

Starring South African rapper Nasty C, this Netflix travel documentary focuses on Japanese culture. The film takes place in Tokyo, where Nasty C explores the city’s go-to places, culture, sounds, and much more.

Zulu Man in Japan was released in 2019. It’s a 44-minute episode, perfect for those days that you want to have just a little dose of wanderlust knowing that you won’t be addicted to long travel series.

The best Netflix travel show for unusual tourists

Dark Tourist

Filmed by journalist David Farrier, the author of the 2016 hit documentary Tickled, Dark Tourist takes a different approach to tourism. Farrier travels to places associated with death or tragedies that have turned these destinations into tourist attractions. You can expect anything from haunted places, nuclear lakes, and unusual and weird destinations. Those spots might not be on your travel bucket list, but it is interesting to know that they exist so you can avoid them on your next holiday.

It’s one of the most-watched travel shows on Netflix, so it’s worth trying.

Netflix show for photography and travel lovers

Tales by Light

Created by Abraham Joffe, this show embraces the art of travel photography and film and the people behind them. This is an Australian documentary/reality travel series on Netflix that follows photographers around the globe as they chase that perfect shot.

This Netflix travel documentary is a good match for those who love photography and travel. It’s perfect for inspiring you to travel and photograph more.

The best Netflix show about traveling with family

Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father

A comedian Jack Whitehall and his uptight father, Michael Whitehall, travel across the world together. The show starts with Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia, with the second season focusing on Eastern Europe. The third season explores the American West, the fourth features Australia, and the fifth is all about the United Kingdom, their homeland. On this last season expect everything from dining with Gordon Ramsay to searching for the Loch Ness monster.

A great Netflix travel show for those thinking of traveling with family. It also sparkes a reflection of our relationships with parents and how travel can be a good way to get together or break apart.

Netflix show that combines travel and design

Banner about the Cabins in the Wild. It is a Netflix streaming show about building cabins in Wales, the UK.

Cabins in the Wild

This show takes place in Wales and follows engineer Dick Strawbridge and craftsman Will Hardie as they inspect eight unique cabins built for a pop-up hotel in Wales. Their final goal is to construct a cabin of their own.

New Food TV Shows to Watch This September

new travel food shows 2022

Food television shows and series debuting in September run the gamut: If you’re into competition shows, there’s a new Bobby Flay one and a new Hulu one around pizza. The lovable misfits of Bob’s Burgers are back for another season. Mary Berry of Great British Baking Show fame has a solo show. And a recipe advice columnist gets a turn as a job in pop culture, with a murder mystery show featuring a cook turned sleuth.

Here’s a look at what else is available to watch in food TV this month.

Bob’s Burgers Season 13 (Streaming on Fox, September 25)

The highly anticipated return of Bob’s Burgers is finally nearing. For the uninitiated, the popular animated comedy series follows Bob Belcher and his family as they navigate the arduous restaurant industry. The restaurant has had to reopen due to a fire, rat infestation, collapsing telephone pole, and in The Bob’s Burgers Movie, a water main break. The creators have said that the movie is canon—meaning the new season may see a “ GRAND RE-RE-RE-RE OPENING ” banner.

Best in Dough (Streaming on Hulu, September 19)

In this new competition show, pizza-obsessed contestants—including mothers and daughters, nonnas, influencers, college students, pitmasters, and more—will showcase their slinging skills in an attempt to win $10,000. Challenges include making pizza with no dough at all and creating “pizza cupcakes.” It’s hosted by Bachelor fan favorite Wells Adams and features judges such as chef Daniele Uditi of Pizzana, chef Millie Peartree, comedian and food influencer Eunji Kim, and baker Bryan Ford.

Hell’s Kitchen: Battle of the Ages (Streaming on Fox, September 29)

Yes, Gordon Ramsay’s show Hell’s Kitchen is still going, and yes you can still watch his blood vessels burst with rage. In this season, the show is dividing up the two teams by age group—40-somethings on the blue team and 20-somethings on the red. All will compete to become head chef at a new Hell’s Kitchen restaurant in Atlantic City.

Recipes for Love and Murder (Streaming on Acorn TV, September 5)

This new mystery is based on Salley Andrew’s book series , Recipes for Love and Murder: A Tannie Maria Mystery . When a woman seeking advice from South African recipe advice columnist Tannie Maria is found dead, Maria and her journalist colleague, Jessie, attempt to solve the small town murder and catch the killer. All the while, Maria will be in the kitchen stirring up apricot jam.

Chef’s Table: Pizza (Streaming on Netflix, September 7)

This season, pizza is getting the Chef’s Table treatment. This show goes beyond the classic marinara-mozzarella combo you may find in a New York slice shop, and makes stops in cities to meet these talented chefs: Chris Bianco (Phoenix), Gabriele Bonci (Rome), Ann Kim (Minneapolis), Franco Pepe (Caiazzao, Italy), Yoshihiro Imai (Kyoto, Japan), and Sarah Minnick (Portland, Oregon).

The Tiny Chef Show (Streaming on Nickelodeon, September 9)

This new stop-motion show features a Tiny Chef serving minuscule dishes in his tiny kitchen. The show is targeted at children: In it, a small felt creature mumbles to himself, takes viewers on a tour around his kitchen, and shares his love of plant-based dishes.

Bobby’s Triple Threat (Streaming on Food Network and Discovery+, September 27)

Bobby Flay is back with a new competition series. This time, Flay has a “top-secret” kitchen, accessible by password only (or through your TV screen), where competitors will face off against three Top Chef alums: Brooke Williamson, Michael Voltaggio, and Tiffany Derry. There are three rounds: In the first two, competitors will be able to choose which of Flay’s chefs they’ll battle, while Flay will choose the ingredients to highlight. But in the last round, ingredients will be up to the competitors, who will have a chance to win $25,000.

Mary Berry: Cook & Share (Streaming on Acorn TV, September 26)

We all know her as a judge on The Great British Baking Show and as the UK’s baking sweetheart, but Mary Berry is now showcasing her original recipes in Mary Berry: Cook & Share. Accompanied by her Cook and Share cookbook, 87-year-old Berry will be traveling to Birmingham, Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, and her mother’s home of Edinburgh to whip up “fuss-free” meals. Expect recipes such as Tear and Share Bread, Ham Toasties, and Honeycomb Chocolate Rocky Road.

One of the best shows on TV is back for another go-round. Apple TV+ just debuted the first trailer for season four of Slow Horses, one of their most critically acclaimed dramas. In the trailer, we see Gary Oldman's Jackson Lamb dealing with the latest catastrophe that his team is facing, as well as some new faces that have joined the cast for season 4.

According to the official logline for the season, it “opens with a bombing that detonates personal secrets, rocking the already unstable foundations of Slough House."

The partnership between Bill Lawrence and Apple TV+ has been incredibly fruitful. The comedy creator has worked with Apple on two great shows, Ted Lasso and Shrinking, which both turned out to be critical and commercial hits for the streaming service. Now, the two have paired up yet again for Bad Monkey, which naturally has many wondering whether this show, which stars Vince Vaughn, will be as successful as Lawrence's first two for Apple. What is Bad Monkey about? The show is based on Carl Hiaasen's 2013 novel of the same name and stars Vaughn as a Florida health inspector who used to work for the Miami Police Department. When he uncovers a mystery involving a human arm caught in a fishing net, he sees a path to getting back on the force.

Horror has probably existed since the beginning of the written word and covers themes ranging from the introspectively personal to the existentially absurd: It’s not just cheap thrills, ghosts, and demons! But sorting out the truly creepy from the quotidian is quite a gargantuan feat.

Because we want you to experience true horror, we’ve narrowed down the past 200 years of scary stories to a concise list of the best classic horror books. Beware, this list isn’t for the faint of heart. Maybe you’ll start hearing ominous sounds coming from the basement or under your bed. Or seeing a grotesque silhouette at the window. Who knows? After reading these books, we dare you to watch the best classic horror movies for the ultimate scare fest. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Breaking news, olive garden brings back never-ending pasta bowl — at an inflation-busting price.

There’s some pasta-tively good news for Olive Garden fans.

The Never Ending Pasta Bowl has returned — and it’s at a pre-inflation price.

Olive Garden's Never Ending Pasta Bowl has returned.

Olive Garden’s fan-favorite officially made a comeback on Monday, Aug. 26, and the in-restaurant promotion is the same price it was in 2022 — starting at $13.99 — after a two-year hiatus.

Available through Nov. 17, customers can enjoy a selection of various pastas, sauces and proteins that add up to 80 different pasta-bilities of combinations — and included unlimited soup or salad and Olive Garden’s famed breadsticks.

Pasta lovers can choose their favorite noodles among fettuccine, spaghetti, rigatoni and angel hair, while sauce options include made-from-scratch creamy mushroom, traditional marinara, five-cheese marinara, traditional meat sauce and Alfredo.

The endless protein toppings are an additional $4.99 and include crispy chicken fritta, meatballs or sausage.

Some customers in the comments of Olive Garden’s Instagram announcement about the return already got their fix of the meal, while others expressed their pre-indulgence excitement.

“Eating my leftovers as I type,” one person wrote. “And gonna go back for more soon.”

“Can never get [past] the first bowl, I just take the next bowl home,” another shared.

“THIS IS A DREAM COME TRUE!!!” someone exclaimed.

“I know a never ending pasta bowl hate to see me coming,” one quipped.

“I have a never ending love for never ending pasta bowl,” a commenter joked.

The return of the deal comes after one Olive Garden customer went viral for a hack to get two pastas for just $6.99.

The diner (@xoxoluciee on TikTok) recently posted that she ordered a kids’ meal, which allowed her to choose pasta as her side and score two noodle dishes for the price of one.

Now, Olive Garden’s Never Ending Pasta Bowl allows for an adult-sized pasta — and as many bowls of it as you want.
