The Best Girlfriend Weekend Getaways in the USA

As much as I love my solitude, I wouldn’t be who I am without my girlfriends. The women who have helped shape me and who continue to be my biggest cheerleaders hold a very special place in my life, and in my travels. Each year, we make it a point to have an adventure together at least once.

Though I’ve been lucky enough to travel in Thailand and Europe a few times with some of my friends, for the most part we focus on hanging in the USA, where we’re from. Given how much variety there is stateside, there’s no shortage of girlfriend getaways we can pack into a weekend.

Whether your friend group prefers the outdoors, a lively or peaceful atmosphere, something natural, or more of a city vibe, there’s something on this list that can make everyone in your group happy. These are some of our favorite girlfriend weekend getaways:

1. Moab, Utah

This little slice of Utah is one of my favorite places on the entire planet. The town itself has a funky, laid back vibe, but the real magic is out in the multitude of state and national parks in the area. Within a max of 45 minutes from town you’ve got Arches National Park , Dead Horse Point State Park, Canyonlands National Park, and all of the arches and stunning natural areas that border them.

While this is more of an outdoorsy suggestion, many of the more stunning points of interest are overlooks that you can drive right up to, including the famous Mesa Arch, The Windows, the Needles Overlook, and Dead Horse Point. For a more comprehensive list of ideas,  check out this post .

Stay: This is the perfect place for camping, but if you’d rather opt for glamping or a hotel, those options are available too. For a truly unique experience, check out Under Canvas Moab .

Getting There: Fly into Salt Lake City and enjoy the 4-hour drive to Moab. This one is best for long weekends!

2. Orange County, California

As a former resident of Newport Beach in Orange County , I can say with certainty that this is the perfect girlfriend weekend getaway that truly has something for everyone. There’s the gorgeous stretch of coastline, great shopping at Fashion Island, Disneyland is only a 15-minute drive away, and so is Angels Stadium if you’re baseball lovers. Though it’s a bit pricey, you can also take a helicopter ride over the OC for a truly unique viewpoint and the perfect overview of it all.

Stay: VRBO  is a great option in this area if you want to stay on the beach in Newport – and you should!

Getting there: Getting to the coast is easy and painless with a flight into John Wayne Airport (SNA) and a quick drive to one of the beach towns.

3. Washington, D.C.

For East Coast friend groups, DC is an easy one since it’s such a hub for flights from all around the US. There are so many neighborhoods in the city and it’s so rich in history, plus it’s beautiful. I’m a big fan of the free Smithsonian museums, Botanic Garden, and the National Gallery of Art. Here’s a listing of 14 free museums in DC .

If you’re craving some sea views, Annapolis is only 50 minutes away. If your group loves horses, Middleburg, VA is only an hour and 25 minute drive away. Here’s a listing of more ideas .

Stay : Georgetown is a cool college area with great nightlife.

Getting there: Both Washington Dulles and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport work for your DC getaway, though the latter is much closer.

4. Las Vegas, Nevada

Out of all the places on this list, this is the one my girlfriends and I have visited the most often. The airport is so well connected, there’s not shortage of things to do, and it’s also naturally beautiful all around Vegas.

While seeing world-class shows and dancing the day away at pool parties (a favorite of ours) are great ways to spend one’s time, I also highly recommend heading away from the Strip for a day and checking out the Seven Magic Mountains art installation just a 20 minute drive down Interstate 15, or heading north to the Valley of Fire State Park for a sunrise or sunset.

Stay : We usually book the best deal on the Strip, though our favorites are Mandalay Bay and the MGM Grand .

Getting there: Las Vegas McCarran International Airport is super close to the Strip and easy to find flight deals to!

5. Santa Barbara, California

I’ll admit I’m biased towards Santa Barbara, since it’s the college town where I met my girlfriends, but we adore meeting up in SB for a weekend of fun in the sun. Not only are there some of the most gorgeous beaches in the country (Butterfly Beach and Haskell’s), but also there is some of the best shopping on State Street and beautiful hiking trails in Montecito.

Stay: Though Santa Barbara might seem pretty high-end, there are great campgrounds nearby at El Capitan and Gaviota where I see dolphins every single time I camp there, as well as cheaper VRBO options in SB’s neighbor, Goleta.

Getting there: Santa Barbara Airport is so small and lovely to fly into!

6. Austin, Texas

Austin is probably Texas’ most beloved city, not just for the wealth of things to do, but for the alternative vibe. Some of my favorite activities there involve the water, including tubing down the river or visiting Barton Springs, a natural spring-fed pool, with a year-round average temperature of  68°F (20°C). Depending on time of year, make it a point to attend SXSW festival or a Longhorns football game.

Stay: I stayed at the JW Marriott downtown while in Austin and loved the room and location.

Getting there:  Austin–Bergstrom International Airport has plenty of nonstop flights on Southwest Airlines from all around the country, and for cheap!

7. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona is a little artist’s oasis in Arizona with a hippie vibe and a wealth of beautiful day hikes. If your girlfriends enjoy a nice hike now and then but prefer to sleep in a hotel at night, this is the perfect compromise between the outdoorsy and the comfortable, without breaking the bank. Some of the best hikes are the Devil’s Bridge, Bell Rock, and Cathedral Rock. They’re all pretty short, moderate hikes with a big payoff at the end. Stay: There are plenty of cute VRBOs in Sedona to choose from.

Getting there:  Flagstaff International Airport is the closest small commercial airport to Sedona, or fly to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and drive for two hours to reach Sedona.

8.  San Francisco Bay Area, California

This one’s a natural fit for me because so many of my girlfriends live here, so I’ve seen all of the tourist and non-touristy sights in the Bay Area and keep going back! For a great view of the Bay Bridge, head to Baker Beach. If you’re interested in a more alternative vibe, I love Oakland’s Lake Merritt area for its eateries, and on Sundays, Ecstatic Dance is a favorite of ours. In the city, be sure to check out the Painted Ladies for the perfect photo op or walk along The Presidio for some nature. Haight-Ashbury is one of my favorite places to shop and hang out as well!

Stay: SF can be expensive but if you split a  VRBO  it can be a bit more affordable.

Getting there: Both San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Oakland International Airport (OAK) are easy to fly into, though I prefer Oakland since it’s smaller. Pick based on where you’ll spend more time.

9. Ft. Myers, Florida

While Miami might seem like a more likely girlfriend getaway than Ft. Myers, hear me out! This little stretch of beach and accompanying islands on the Gulf Side of Florida has two things that make it perfect for girlfriends who love the water – sailing lessons and kayaking through gorgeous mangroves. Those two things made me fall in love with Ft. Myers and honestly, a weekend of sailing with friends sounds like tons of fun to me! You can learn more about sailing in Ft. Myers here.

Stay: I loved Pink Shell Resort and Marina ‘s huge rooms.

Getting there: Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is an easy 30-minute drive from downtown Ft. Myers.

10. Portland, Oregon

Have you ever heard the slogan, ‘Keep Portland Weird’? That’s what’s so alluring about the city, plus the gorgeous Multnomah waterfalls that are only a 35-minute drive from the city, and a 2.2-mile hike to the top of the falls. Portland is perfect for live music, perusing the books at the largest independent bookstore in the world, Powell’s Books, and the (easy) hike to Mt. Tabor. Here’s a list with more things to do including farmer’s markets and free gardens.

Stay: The Inn at Northrup Station is cute, affordable, and well-loved.

Getting there: Fly into Portland International Airport (PDX).

17 Unique and Affordable Girls’ Weekend Getaways in the U.S.

When you think of girls’ weekend getaways, what comes to mind? Sun, shopping, spa, wine? Sure, me too. Those are always fun things to do with friends. But your next girls’ trip doesn’t need to be to popular but pricey hot spots like Charleston, Nashville, Napa , Santa Fe, Las Vegas, or Key West . It is time to think a little out of the box.

Since the purpose of a girlfriend getaway is the time you spend together, there are so many fun spots to have a girls’ getaway that don’t have to cost an arm-and-a-leg. These are some trip ideas that will also let you try something new, learn something, or have a unique bonding experience in destinations that may never have dawned on you as being perfect for a girls’ trip.

Unique Destinations for Girls’ Weekend Getaways

Living in New England, Maine has become my go-to girls’ weekend getaway destination, especially for my friends that love the outdoors and adventure as much as I do! My friend Kim and I have spent a girl’s trip relaxing at a cabin in Moosehead Lake . Our days were filled with hiking, moose safaris, naps, and laughter while our evenings were spent reading, talking, cooking, and drinking wine together.

My friend Tracy and I took a trip from Portland, Maine to the Inn at Diamond Cove . After enjoying lobster and shopping in Portland, we took the ferry to Great Diamond Island for a relaxing and car-free stay. We spent our days exploring the island, searching for sea glass, and relaxing on private beaches and our evenings enjoying fine dining and beautiful sunsets.

This past summer, my friend Michelle and I had a unique adventure on the Schooner Heritage , a Maine Windjammer that cruises out of Rockland, Maine. We made friends with fellow passengers, helped the crew raise and lower the sails, and enjoyed the scenic views of the Maine coast — topped off with an authentic Maine lobster bake on a deserted beach.

Whether you prefer mountains and lakes or Maine’s rocky coast, there is a unique girls’ trip location waiting for you in Maine.

2. Fort Wayne, Indiana

Fort Wayne has two big claims to fame — Vera Bradley and the Genealogy Center, which is the nation’s second-largest genealogy collection, and a great place to research family history. Yes, the Vera Bradley Annual Outlet Sale is a great time to visit and shop on a girl’s trip, but there is plenty more to enjoy in Fort Wayne for a weekend getaway.

Start off by renting kayaks, bikes, or paddle boards from Fort Wayne Outfitters and explore the riverfront in Promenade Park. Afterward, check out The Landing neighborhood, which used to be where canal boats docked to unload goods. In this new food and entertainment district, you can fill up at The Landing Beer Company or enjoy farm-to-fork dining at Tolon. Fort Wayne is also home to one of the largest Burmese populations outside of Thailand so you may want to sample authentic Burmese dishes at restaurants like Mahnin.

Your gal pals will also love searching out some of the murals that are part of Fort Wayne’s growing public art scene, shopping at great downtown boutiques, and sampling the goods at DeBrand Fine Chocolates.

Where to stay: Fort Wayne’s new boutique hotel — The Bradley , which was created in partnership between Vera Bradley co-founder, Barbara Bradley Baekgaard, and Provenance Hotels.

3. Glacier Country, Montana

If you are looking for an outdoor adventure combined with cute towns, local breweries and distilleries, and one-of-a-kind adventures, head to Glacier Country in Western Montana. My friend Keryn and I recently came back from a Montana girlfriend getaway and we had the best time just reconnecting and enjoying nature.

From the epic views of Glacier National Park to the lesser-trod gems like the Kootenai Falls and Suspension Bridge or Ross Creek Cedars, you won’t run out of room or fun ways to get outdoors. A highlight of our trip was getting to try llama trekking and I’m convinced this is the best way to hike!

Where to stay: For a short stay, fly in and out of Missoula and stay at the Residence Inn Missoula downtown where you can walk to cute boutiques, restaurants, day spas, and cocktail bars. For a small-town setting, book a cabin at Bridge Street Cottages in Big Fork, Montana.

4. Franklin, Tennessee

Just a half-hour south of Nashville lies the cutest little downtown with a great American Main Street that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There is a reason the town has appeared in so many Hallmark movies! In downtown Franklin, you will find unique shops, restaurants, antique stores, entertainment, and the arts. It is also a great spot to explore Civil War history or take some tasting tours at local distilleries on a day trip along the Masters & Makers Trail.

If you want to stay active, try paddle boarding on the Harpeth River, bike out to Leiper’s Fork, or challenge yourself at the SOAR Adventure Park.  Nearby you can also explore sections of the Natchez Trace Parkway, a 444-mile “All American” national scenic byway, which follows the course of the ancient trace traveled for centuries by tradesmen and Native Americans from Natchez, Mississippi to Nashville, Tennessee.

A photo with your friends in front of the double arch bridge is the perfect memento for your trip. Be sure to check out the Visit Franklin website to see if you can coordinate your visit with any of the area’s fun festivals or events.

Where to stay: The Harpeth Franklin Downtown , a Curio Collection by Hilton property, which is just steps away from Main Street.

5. El Paso, Texas

El Paso, Texas is one of those unexpected spots for a girls’ getaway. I visited with my friend Kim a few years ago and it was great because she was coming from the West Coast and I was from the East Coast, so we got to meet somewhat in the middle and experience something new. It was a fun mix of adventure, eating, drinking, and shopping in the American Southwest.

You can’t miss browsing at some of the boot factory outlets around town. We even had a chance to watch some of the master bookmakers in action at the Lucchese factory before I snagged a new pair of snazzy boots.

We also explored downtown and had fun with our Instagram poses in front of the many murals. I developed a fondness for all things green chili, while we slugged down margaritas the size of our heads and steaks the size of a platter. Don’t worry, we worked some of it off hiking in Franklin Mountain State Park (even did a little spelunking!) and off-roading at Red Sands, where I learned I’m terrible at driving an ATV. To chill out, we popped into nearby New Mexico for some wine tasting at local wineries.

Where to stay : Hotel Indigo was perfect for a girl’s trip with a rooftop pool and bar and lots of local flair.

6. Buffalo, New York

If you love a destination with a great urban transformation story, it is time to check out Buffalo, New York. In recent years, Buffalo has redeveloped its waterfront and revitalized neighborhoods with over $1 billion in new investment. History lovers can explore the robust history of this region, from its original Senecan inhabitants to its time as the Gateway to the West on the Eerie Canal, to its critical role in the Underground Railroad. Once home to many wealthy industrialists, the city has a number of Frank Lloyd Wright homes and restored architecture.

What may really surprise you is the city’s rising prominence as a foodie destination. Famous for the spicy wings first introduced at the Anchor Bar, there are many other “ must eat” foods in Buffalo, from sponge candy to beef on weck sandwiches. Follow the many food trails, experience the international flavors brought to the city by immigrants from Southeast Asia and Africa, and check out some of the city’s burgeoning craft beer purveyors. Where to stay: Hotel at the Lafayette is a boutique hotel built in 1904. This landmark French Renaissance-style hotel was designed by Louise Blanchard Bethune, the first American female architect, making it perfect for a girls’ weekend.

7. Oceanside, California

If you are looking for a SoCal beach getaway, skip the tourist spots and head to Oceanside. Located between LA and San Diego, you can even access Oceanside on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train for a car-free trip. This beach town has a laid-back vibe with gorgeous beaches, a historic wooden pier, a quaint New England-style harbor, and charming bungalow neighborhoods.

You can explore surf culture at the California Surf Museum, or take a surf lesson and catch some waves yourselves. O’side (as locals affectionately call it), is a perfect spot for outdoor adventures from paddle boarding and biking to bucket list activities like sky diving and helicopter tours. Movie fans will get a kick out of seeing the Top Gun house, while shopping aficionados will enjoy strolling through The Rising Co., a fun makers space/co-op with several noteworthy local artisans such as Rais Case, which makes handmade leather goods. Where to stay: Mission Pacific Hotel has a rooftop pool and a fun bohemian style, and ocean views, and is a fun alternative located in the heart of downtown is The Fin Hotel , part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton. This 26-room boutique hotel is in a historic building with many of the original architectural and design details, but modernized rooms.

8. Outer Banks, North Carolina

The beach house rentals available in the Outer Banks make it a perfect laid-back, girls’ trip destination for a large friend group. This was actually where I used to go with my college girlfriends back in my 20s, but it is still a perfect pick decades later. In addition to enjoying the beach and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, you can get your thrills by trying out hang gliding off the 90-foot sand dunes at Jockey’s Ridge.

Seafood fans can explore the newly-launched North Carolina Oyster Trail, and then stop at a few of the local breweries. A visit to Roanoke will take you back to America’s earliest colonial history, and a climb to the top of America’s tallest brick lighthouse in Cape Hatteras will make a perfect photo opp to remember your trip.

9. Cincinnati, Ohio

The Queen City rises to the top of the list when considering the perfect midwest destination for a girlfriend getaway.  Situated along the scenic Ohio River, Cincinnati surprises visitors with an array of entertainment, an eclectic food scene, and plenty of lively happenings. 

The first stop on any girlfriend getaway is Cincinnati’s historic neighborhood, Over-The-Rhine (OTR). This neighborhood has seen a massive transformation over the past decade, shaping it into today’s incredible destination. OTR is full of boutique shops, cocktail bars, craft breweries, and some of the city’s best food. Don’t miss favorites such as the Eagle’s fried chicken, a classic donut from Holtman’s, or gourmet tacos from Bakersfield. 

Downtown, you will find the Aronoff Center for the Arts for those looking to catch a Broadway performance. Before you the show you can try to snag dinner reservations at nearby Sotto or Nada. 

A girlfriend getaway is never complete without a mimosa or bloody mary! Cincinnati’s brunch scene is booming, offering creative dishes, and fresh local ingredients in an upbeat atmosphere.  Splurge on an exquisite brunch buffet at the Orchids of Palm Court or dine at a must-visit spot like Taste of Belgium. While the Taste of Belgium is known for its decant waffles, they also serve various traditional Belgium recipes with a twist. 

Step into one of Cincinnati’s gorgeous museums and exhibits like the Cincinnati Art Museum in Eden Park, Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal, and the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center.   Enhance your art experience by touring the city with a self-guided walking tour of the downtown Artworks Murals. While there are over 130 murals throughout the city’s regions, many popular ones are found downtown and  OTR. Cap off any visit to Cincinnati with a stroll along the lovely riverwalk at Smale Riverfront Park while enjoying a scoop of Graeter’s Ice Cream. 

Where to stay: 21c Museum Hotel is located in the heart of the Queen City and this unique modern hotel offers a luxurious spa, a beautiful rooftop bar, and a contemporary art museum. 

10. Providence, Rhode Island

The “Creative Capital” of the country’s smallest state is a great New England girls’ weekend destination . Perfect for foodies, you can spend your whole weekend seeking out the city’s best restaurants, breweries, food trucks, and pop-ups. Or, make it easy and take a food tour with Rhode Island Reds.

Get your exercise by biking the East Bay Bike Path, kayaking through downtown with Providence Kayaks, or climbing College Hill and finishing with a walk across the Pedestrian Bridge. The best boutique shopping is found on Westminster Street or in Wayland Square. For relaxation, book a treatment at the Bodhi hydrotherapy spa.

Where to stay: Hotel Providence is an ideal boutique hotel option in the heart of downtown, or pick the Dean Hotel for something funky. The new aLoft Providence also has a great location and a fun roof-top bar.

11. Door County, Wisconsin

If you want a unique destination for a girlfriend getaway, Kirsten from Kids are a Trip suggests heading to Door County, Wisconsin where you will find shopping, delicious food, and a wine trail, as well as countless outdoor adventures. Door County sits at the tip of a peninsula north of Green Bay. Surrounded by water on three sides, the peninsula is a dream getaway with breathtaking scenery, a thriving artist community, and endless opportunities for fun.

Door County is a popular Midwest summer and fall destination. The popular Door County Wine trail, which includes stops at eight local wineries, is a perfect part of a girls’ trip. There are cute local shops all over the peninsula, but take extra time to walk and explore downtown Fish Creek. It’s situated right on the water and there are some lovely restaurants. The historic White Gull Inn has a delicious French toast with cherry cream cheese filling that everyone should try once in their life. 

Be sure to leave time to explore Door County’s five state parks where visitors can try everything from kayaking to exploring the island’s lighthouses (there are 11 of them). Your group should also make plans to attend a local fish boil. Door County was settled by Scandinavian immigrants and a fish boil was part of their culture. Many local restaurants prepare the fish according to traditional methods and tell stories along with the meal. It’s definitely a fun night out.

Door County also has a lavender farm (Washington Island), you-pick orchards (cherries and apples depending on the season), and seasonal festivals. There is truly something for everyone in Door County.

Where to stay: There are vacation rentals all over Door County, but consider choosing a place that is within walking distance of shops and amenities. Ephraim and Fish Creek are good choices. For a hotel stay consider Ashbrooke Hotel in Egg Harbor, Edgewater Resort in Ephraim, or White Gull Inn in Fish Creek. 

12. Excelsior Springs, Missouri

Back in its heyday in the late 1800s, Excelsior Springs drew hundreds of tourists and families hoping to drink or soak in the supposedly healing mineral waters from the dozens of springs and wells on the hillsides. The springs are long closed, but now the Missouri town near Kansas City is a relaxing destination for girlfriends who want a little pampering. Kim from Oh My! Omaha recommends the fabulous spa and accommodations at The Elms Hotel & Spa , a historic hotel. 

The hotel’s lavish outdoor pool is an attraction in the summer, but the indoor spa is a year-round treat. The hotel’s spa is well known for The Grotto, think modern Roman bath with a steam sauna, cold plunge shower, steam shower, and an exfoliation bar. Within walking distance to the hotel, you can stop at a lively brewery called Dubious Claims and hit the shops, including the Willow Springs Mercantile, which features goods made by Missouri artisans.

If wine’s more of your crew’s style, visit the nearby wineries, like VanTill Family Farm & Winery or Fence Stile Winery, which offers private wine cave tours paired with candlelit wine tasting.

13. Tempe, Arizona

If you crave some desert sunshine and a great winter escape, head to Tempe, Arizona for a girls’ trip . This small city just outside of Phoenix is home to Arizona State University, so it has the energy of a college town with the amenities of a city. Hike up to “A” Mountain for a spectacular sunrise or sunset, kayak on Tempe Town Lake, e-bike through the city, and visit the Desert Botanical Gardens.

Make sure to enjoy some great tacos, take pictures by murals, and plan an adventure like hot air ballooning or horseback riding through the desert.

Where to stay: Tempe Mission Palms Hotel and Conference Center is a perfect spot for hiking A mountain or taking the light rail from the airport and it even has a rooftop pool (although only on the second floor.)  If you are looking for something on the trendier side, you will want to stay at either The Westin Tempe , with the tallest rooftop lounge and bar in the East Valley, or the Canopy by Hilton Tempe Downtown , which offers a rooftop pool for guests.

14. Finger Lakes, New York

If your girlfriend group includes a few wine aficionados, skip Napa and head to the Finger Lakes Region in New York. Whether you stay in Ithaca or Watkins Glen on Seneca Lake , you have your choice of wine trails, state parks, and waterfalls.

Make sure you include a sunset cruise on the lake and a visit to a local farm to taste freshly-made cheeses, ice cream, or fresh produce. You can even visit an alpaca farm and take the animals for a stroll.

Where to stay: W atkins Glen Harbor Hotel is located right on Seneca Lake and offers beautiful views, yet is a short walk into downtown or Watkins Glen State Park.

15. Manchester, Vermont

If you want to explore country roads, charming towns, and beautiful scenery, a Vermont girls’ trip is just the thing. Stay in artsy Brattleboro, historic Bennington, shopping-central Manchester, or charming Woodstock. You will find ample hiking to help work off all the cheese, beer, and maple syrup you will sample along the way.

Where to stay: Kimpton Taconic Hotel in Manchester is within walking distance to the town’s many restaurants and shops, including my favorite the Northshire Bookstore. You will also find plenty of designer outlet shopping nearby.

16. Orange Beach, Alabama

During spring break and the summer, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are brimming with families. However, if you can go in the shoulder season, you can still enjoy the soft, white-sand beaches without the crowds (you just may not get much of a suntan.)

Off the water, you can fill your days indulging in the region’s tasty cuisine, visit a spa, or even make your own bath products. From dolphin watching to sunset catamarans, and paddle boards to kayaks, there are so many ways to enjoy Orange Beach. A girl’s trip wouldn’t be complete without an evening at the famous Flor-a-Bama bar.

Where to stay: Rent a condo overlooking the Gulf at Turquoise Place , complete with indoor pools and a lazy river.

17. St. Augustine, Florida

For anyone seeking the fountain of youth (and aren’t well all?), head to St. Augustine, Florida for a girlfriend getaway . Located on Florida’s northeastern “Historic Coast”, is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the United States so it is a great destination for history buffs, but the beach is also nearby.

Have fun exploring the charming downtown on a ghost tour, food tour, or trolley tour. You can also tour local distilleries or try local craft breweries to wash down all that yummy local food.

Where to stay: Stay downtown at the historic St. Francis Inn Bed and Breakfast to easily walk to all the local downtown attractions.

14 Top Girlfriend Getaways

Gather up those college roommates or far-flung female family members for a long-overdue girlfriend getaway of pampering and togetherness. From renting a farmhouse in Tuscany to taking cooking classes on Florida's Amelia Island to camping out in the middle of crowded New York City, each of these trips is ideal for bonding, relaxing, and learning something new. 

Scottsdale, Arizona , has long been synonymous with spa resorts. In fact, Scottsdale is believed to have more spas per capita than any other place in the United States. Unwind at the Willow Stream Spa at   the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess , where the open-air rooftop pool (pictured) is a huge draw. Even if you're not a guest at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa , you can hang out and use its facilities all day just by booking a treatment. And in nearby Paradise Valley, the  Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort  invites contemplative interludes in the meditation garden or by the reflecting pond.

Massages and skin treatments always go over well on girlfriend getaways—but with so many spas around, how can you sort out the good from the so-so? And how can you find the best deals? Search  Spafinder for information on treatments and rates at facilities around the country, or just for ideas for destinations you might not have thought about before. Wine lovers already know about California's Napa and Sonoma. For a different type of wine vacation, head up to Oregon's Willamette Valley   (pictured)   for award-winning vintages or to the  Columbia Gorge region straddling the Washington border for tastings and tours among waterfall-laden scenery. A stay at the Allison Inn & Spa   puts you close to Willamette's 200 vineyards, whereas the historic Columbia Gorge Hotel & Spa   is an hour's drive from Mt. Hood and what oenophiles call "a world of wines in 40 miles." Visit Travel Oregon for suggested routes and planning tips for both the Willamette Valley and Columbia Gorge regions.

It's hard to go wrong with a trip that starts with champagne and pastries. In April, May, August, and October, the Ritz-Carlton on Florida's  Amelia Island  puts on a Salt Cooking School .  Each of these one-day events centers on a certain theme, such as Latin street food or dinner party hors d'oeuvres. Guests arrive at 9am and are treated to breakfast as chefs outline the menu for the day. Everybody leaves with an apron, recipe book, and significantly improved cooking skills. 

Additionally, the hotel offers a weekend-long vacation once a year called the  Salt and Savor Culinary Weekend .  This event, while pricey, is an incredible opportunity to experience two days of hands-on cooking instruction from the chefs of the Ritz-Carlon themselves. The package also includes a daily breakfast, valet parking, more aprons, and take-home recipes.

If you and your friends are serious about food, DISH runs a culinary boot camp  to get cooking skills up to speed. Admittedly, the program is more of a skills-related immersion experience than a by-the-books vacation, but intensive learning can be rewarding—and just think of the incredible dinner parties you'll throw afterwards. Boot camps are offered year-round for two, three, four, or five days at locations in New York, Texas, and California.

For extra-special occasions, Italy is the ultimate destination for a friends' trip. There's no better place to indulge in food and wine while also learning a little bit about art and history. Consider renting a Tuscan farmhouse to immerse yourself in the medieval past; in addition to searching Airbnb and its major competitors for options, don't forget about smaller outfits such as  Papavero Villa Rentals . You'll explore historic cities filled with Gothic architecture and world-renowned artistic treasures, then return to the surrounding countryside to savor wines—and views. No one in the group will ever forget it. 

For those who find New York City  overwhelming at times, Governors Island , a long-abandoned military base in the middle of the Hudson River, is a breath of fresh air. All it takes is a short ferry ride from Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn Bridge Park to be transported to a natural wonder right in the city. Rent a bike from  Blazing Saddles   or a surrey that can accommodate you and up to three friends, and explore the island's parks, art installations, old military buildings, and food vendors, all while taking in prime views of the skyline.

At night, head over to   Collective Governors Island ,  a luxury campsite where tents are tricked out with upscale amenities including Wi-Fi, electrical outlets, and, in some cases, private bathrooms with rain-style spa showers and private decks with reclining chairs. You can have dinner at the onsite restaurant   or barbecue your own eats at a personal grill before grabbing a spot around the communal campfire to make s'mores with your friends and fellow glampers.

Groups that have noble aspirations—and sizable budgets—can reserve a Duchess Room at  Dukes hotel in London . A staff member escorts you to the door and handles all room service and housekeeping inquiries. Small touches—fresh flowers, a fruit bowl, bedroom slippers—can make all the difference after a long flight. The five-star boutique hotel, less than a 15-minute walk from  Buckingham Palace , offers high tea in the afternoon. The 90-room hotel is also close to gourmet food emporium Fortnum & Mason  (a favorite of the royals), along with classic luxury brands such as Chanel and YSL on Old Bond Street.

There's no shortage of all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico. If you've had your fill of those, look further north in the Atlantic and give Bermuda a try.  The Reefs Resort & Club   offers ocean views from every guest room—and from the bathrooms. At this luxury hotel, lounging on the private pink-sand beach is practically required. Exuding warm hospitality, the Reefs serves afternoon tea daily and has resources to help you explore the island. Girlfriend getaway–themed packages may include spa credits or a special three-course dinner at one of three onsite restaurants.

Airfare to Hawaii seems to get cheaper all the time , so there's really no excuse not to fly out at this point. Hit the waves on  Oahu  and spend the night at Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort   to enjoy   lovely views, beaches, and genuine Hawaiian decor. The spacious rooms reflect the rich history of the islands with their outrigger theme. Many neighborhing hotels also sell solid surf packages for short stays. Make sure to take full advantage of the sunset views—and to snag a few delicious drinks—at  Duke's Waikiki .

There is no doubt that the  Prana del Mar  in  Cabo San Lucas  helps guests unplug. Cell phone coverage and Wi-Fi service are spotty, and the eco-friendly retreat generates its own electricity. All of that makes this a good choice for groups seeking a digital detox in order to connect with one another and work on mindfulness and wellness. There are onsite yoga and Pilates classes, plus more active diversions such as hiking, surfing, and horseback riding. You can even sneak out of the enclosure and explore Baja on your own, or—perhaps more in the spirit of things—just stay put and enjoy the beautiful vistas on campus. Weekly rates include seven nights' lodging, airport transfers, three meals a day, and daily yoga classes. 

Go west to  Whitefish , Montana , for Cowgirl Up! , a six-night, women-only retreat in the spring and summer. It's an all-inclusive western fantasy filled with trail rides, horse clinics, good food, and end-of-day massages. Not to mention the lessons—by the time you cowgirl down, you'll not only have become proficient in horseback riding but also in line dancing, barrel racing, skeet shooting, and fly fishing. It’s true that summer is the official season for road trips, but is there really a time that isn’t amazing for a solid vacay? Especially during the winter months when stress is at an all-time high and we actually do have a couple more long weekends to take advantage of, grabbing a friend or two and setting off on an adventure is totally necessary. 

We say carpe the hell of that diem and hit the road with your friends whenever the mood strikes. 

And there is truly nothing like the quintessential “girl’s getaway” — a chance for  you and some of your besties  to ditch work and responsibilities for some much-needed days of female bonding and unabashed girl time. You don’t even have to go that far to get worlds away. Here are 50 girlfriend trips here in the States to add to your travel bucket list.

Alabama: SanRoc Cay

You probably don’t associate Alabama with gorgeous beaches — but you should. The Gulf Coast is packed with lovely beaches, and Orange Beach, home to SanRoc Cay, is massively popular among girlfriend groups for its beach access, cute boutiques and upscale shopping and dining.

Alaska: Cruise

Not every cruise needs to have a Caribbean destination on its itinerary. Alaska is truly one of the last expanses of true wilderness in the country. With all of the fjords, passages and glaciers to explore, an all-inclusive cruise is your ticket to a stress-free getaway with breathtaking views.

Arkansas: Hot Springs

Also known as “The Spa City,” Hot Springs, Arkansas, has a little something for every interest — but the main draw is varsity-level pampering. Get a massage, spend a little time at an oxygen bar or visit one of the many mineral bathhouses.

Arizona: Scottsdale

If Arizona has never been on your list of must-visit places, you should rectify that. There’s gorgeous scenery in between vibrant cities, and Scottsdale itself is packed full of galleries, shopping and crazy fun nightlife. If you don’t want to visit during the 100-degree (and up!) summer months, why not escape from a colder climate in November, where the highs can hit a perfectly pleasant 75 degrees.

California: Sonoma

You probably know why Sonoma is on this list, and yes, it’s mostly the wine. But outdoorsy types will love the extensive hike and bike opportunities, gorgeous climates and breathtaking scenery of Sonoma Valley.

Colorado: Denver

Why Colorado? Decide for yourself: There are tons of outdoors activities, a great art scene  and all types of “greenery” for all levels of adventurousness. When you’re done exploring the city, Estes Park is just a stone’s throw away, literally nestled in the heart of the Rockies, where you can check out cute shops and take in the wildlife.

Delaware: Rehoboth

Rehoboth has an adorable boardwalk overlooking the ocean and a friendly feel to it, but its biggest draw will be for the savvy spenders, since all of the many shopping options come with an unexpected perk: It’s tax-free, year round.

Florida: Naples

Let’s face it: Florida can feel extremely touristy, but that’s only if you hit the usual haunts. Skip Disney World and Miami and head for Naples instead. It’s not much in the way of nightlife, but that’s kind of the point. What it lacks in flash it makes up for in being a low-key escape where you can hang out at the pubs or promenade in the botanical garden.

Georgia: Savannah

Savannah is a tiny, quirky little place that has lots to love. It’s gorgeous, of course, and said to be “The Most Haunted City” in America. Whatever you’re into, it’s got: Head to the River Walk for nightlife and a to-go cup of your favorite cocktail, take a ghost tour, check out the many art galleries or head east to the islands for a little beach time.

Hawaii: Kauai

You really can’t go wrong with Hawaii — the whole place is freakin’ gorgeous. But head for Kauai for Waimea Canyon, cave diving, snorkeling and ATV tours. Once you’re worn out, hit up one of Kauai’s many spas for a little lomilomi.

Idaho: Coeur d’Alene

The Lake City is often overlooked, but it definitely shouldn’t be. It’s got beautiful marinas and tons of boat tours, resorts, skiing and a bonus: It’s only 30 miles from Spokane, if the need for nightlife grabs you.

Illinois: Chicago

Chicago has budget accommodations that feel upscale ( Hotel Allegro ) and upscale lodgings that feel positively palatial ( The Thompson ), which makes accessing the entertainment at Millennium Park, the Observatory and too-many-to-count eateries that satisfy every conceivable taste a breeze.

Indiana: Indianapolis

Indy is too perfect for a highbrow girl’s getaway, from the gondola tours in Ripple to The Fashion Mall, a high end, fashion-only shopping destination featuring Burberry, Coach and Saks Fifth and, of course, a night out at with the Indianapolis Orchestra Symphony.

Iowa: Council Bluffs

Council Bluffs is where you’ll want to head for a lady’s casino weekend if you’re easily overwhelmed by Vegas’s over-the-top glitz and glamour. Horseshoe and Harrah’s both make it easy to have an entire adults-only weekend without ever leaving your resort.

Kansas: Kansas City

Kansas City is a foodie’s destination with tons and tons and tons of local coffee shops, gelato stops, chocolatiers, friendly little pubs and elegant prix fixe restaurants. No Michelin stars in the city yet, but don’t be surprised if that changes soon.

Kentucky: Lexington

Here’s something you might not know: Kentucky is freaking gorgeous. Here’s something you might now know about Lexington: It’s a surprisingly modern, quirky city with a thriving art scene. Artsy types will want to check out the many gorgeous murals in the city and hit NoLi Night Market on the first Friday of every month, or get in on the action with a trip to Kre8now Makerspace .

Louisiana: New Orleans

New Orleans remains one of the best spots for a weekend of ladies-only debauchery. If you want it, NOLA has it: food, music, gorgeous architecture and more than one opportunity to let loose.

Maine: Portland

Ah, the “other” Portland. Maine’s rock beaches are great for girl’s groups who want to swap sand and surf for pebbles and breakers.

Maryland: Annapolis

Annapolis is a wonderfully walkable bay city that is sure to rouse some patriotic stirrings given that it’s home to the Naval Academy. Get brunch, go shopping or just enjoy the waterfront views.

Massachusetts: Salem

It might sound totally corny, but if you can, head to Salem for Halloween. After all, in a city whose main claim to fame is witches, you can’t go wrong with spooky outings, séances and psychic readings all set against beautiful fall foliage.

Michigan: Detroit

Detroit’s been given an unfair rep. It’s had its share of hardships, sure, but the city is experiencing something of a renaissance, and it’s totally perfect for a girls-only getaway. There’s stunning art deco architecture, plenty of downtown spaces that are totally safe even for late night trips and enough free live music during Labor Day weekend to make Detroit a go-to spot that won’t wreck your wallet.

Minnesota: Lake Superior

Don’t let wintry weather keep you from visiting beautiful Lake Superior. If you go in December, you won’t have a single problem finding a swanky resort, like  Bluefin Bay or Larsmont , where you can stay in anything from a cottage to a townhome with a group of your closest girlfriends and enjoy all-season in and outdoor Jacuzzis even in the wintry weather.

Mississippi: Biloxi

Not up for a full-fledged New Orleans trip? Try Biloxi instead, where you can hit the beach, try your luck at a casino or enjoy the more low-key Historic Ocean Springs, just mere minutes from the city.

Missouri: Hermann

Need a little fresh air? Pack a picnic lunch and head to the blossoming wine country of Missouri, where you can enjoy wine flights at local favorite Stone Hill Winery and then rent a bicycle and enjoy a lazy ride on the 225-mile Katy Trail. But maybe not in that order.

Montana: Philipsburg

Channel your inner tween girl and her undying love of horses and grab a bunch of your girlfriends for a stay at a dude ranch. Or would that be a dudette ranch? You won’t be roughing it at a place like The Ranch at Rock Creek , a five star lodge resort situated on 6,600 beautiful acres to ride on.

Nebraska: Omaha

Are you and your ladies less into wine and more into beer, craft or otherwise? You could do much, much worse than Omaha’s extensive selection of microbreweries and distilleries, located all over the city.

Nevada: Las Vegas

Admittedly, this might seem a little cliché, but there is nothing that shouts “girl’s weekend” more than a group of Vegas-bound women. Sometimes, literally. The best part about staying at a casino resort? You don’t have to leave: Everything from gaming to brunch and massages are all in the same spot . That’s handy when you’ve been downing comped drinks since before lunch.

New Hampshire: White Mountains

There really isn’t a bad time to visit New Hampshire. It’s balmy in the summer, breathtaking in the fall and sporty in the winter with skating, skiing and ice fishing on offer. It’s tough to pick a favorite place, what with all the quiet lakeside towns and multiple camping destinations, but you can’t go wrong with the White Mountains, where you can zip line, picnic and hike. Less of an outdoor girl? There’s no sales tax in New Hampshire — ever. Shop away.

New Jersey: Jersey Shore

Don’t let Snooki and company turn you off of the shore. You and your friends will need to book months in advance, but once you get there, you can enjoy never-ending nightlife, sunbathing, gambling, boardwalk shopping and great eats.

New Mexico: Santa Fe

Santa Fe, baby. It’s a vibrant little all-adobe city with no less than 250 art galleries and an opportunity to pick up some art to match your tastes, whether that’s kitschy turquoise baubles or million-dollar masterpieces on Canyon Road. Important: You must not leave Santa Fe without having a mescal margarita somewhere .

New York: Finger Lakes

With tons of vineyards (it’s the state’s largest wine-producing region), beautiful scenery, an observatory and seriously swanky lodgings, the Finger Lakes region in central New York is the perfect downstate escape and an excellent girl’s getaway spot.

North Carolina: Asheville

If you’ve got a diverse group of girlfriends , Asheville has something for everyone. There’s white-water rafting, the genteel Biltmore Estate (with a winery and beautiful garden on its grounds), retail therapy galore and the famous Grove Park Inn Spa for all of your pampering needs.

North Dakota: Bottineau Winter Park

North Dakota is the ultimate winter sports getaway for ladies who love to ski, snowboard, hike or even play a quick pickup game of hockey — and, hands-down, the best place to do it is Bottineau Winter Park in the Turtle Mountains.

Ohio: Yellow Springs

Yellow Springs, Ohio, has a definite hippie vibe to it, giving the whole place a bit of a festival feel. There are open-air markets, true farm-to-table dining, writer’s workshops and tons of live music that covers every genre from jazz to New Age.

Oklahoma: Oklahoma City

Bricktown is Oklahoma City’s entertainment district. It’s safe, totally walkable and you can catch the water taxi up the canal to take in a few of the sights before heading to one of Bricktown’s low-key bars or taverns.

Oregon: Seaside

Just an hour and a half from all of the bustle (and crazy cool architecture) in Portland, Seaside is a great place to wine, dine and just promenade with your girls on well, the Promenade, a mile-and-a-half-long oceanfront walkway.

Pennsylvania: Hershey

Hershey has chocolate. That should be enough to make it a prime girl’s weekend destination, but just in case it isn’t, how about an affordable theme park, gorgeous gardens, tons of shopping and an upscale resort and spa with chocolate-infused treatments like the “whipped cocoa bath?”

Rhode Island: Newport

Everything you need for the perfect girl’s weekend is right on Newport’s waterfront, including great Bloody Marys and brunch spots and cute seaside spas for a perfect mani-pedi.

South Carolina: Hilton Head

Hilton Head Island feels downright tropical next to your standard coastline vacations, with its  lush greenery and palm trees . It’s tucked neatly into the coast with really nice all-inclusive resorts on offer, but if the quiet starts to get to your gang, you can head north to Charleston or south to Savannah and be there before happy hour.

South Dakota: Sioux Falls

Once you’re done soaking in all of the gorgeous scenery at Falls Park, you can head back out into town for the low-key SculptureWalk and grab a nightcap at one of the city’s charming little hole-in-the-wall nightclubs before tucking in for the night.

Tennessee: Nashville

Nashville is a must for girl’s trips and bachelorette parties . If you’re looking for a night of barhopping, dancing and good old-fashioned honky-tonks, you’ll want to hit Broadway. You might not find many locals there, but it’s tough to pass up so many watering holes in one spot. If you were hoping for something slightly more low-key, you can’t go wrong with Belle Meade Plantation, which has on-site wine tasting.

Texas: Lakeway

Just a half hour from Austin, and situated on the nearly rebounded Lake Travis, Lakeway is located in the Hill Country, which has gorgeous views. You can rent a party boat, chill at one of the many spas nearby and enjoy shopping at the local Galleria. If you start to get suburban fever, you can easily head into the city or go for a slightly longer drive to Fredericksburg, a cute little German town, where wineries line highway 290 on your way in.

Utah: St. George

Kelce, 34, helped to amp up the crowd during an auction at the event, revealing his “significant other” Swift, also 34, wanted to offer four tickets to a future Eras Tour show in Miami, Indianapolis or New Orleans when it returns stateside later this year.

“I was just talking to my significant other and we might have one other auction item that wasn’t on the docket. Has anybody heard of the Eras Tour?” Kelce asked the crowd, who responded with cheers and applause.

Auctioneer Harry Santa revealed in a separate Instagram Story that the tickets sold for $80,000.

Mahomes, who established 15 and the Mahomies Foundation in 2019 to help improve children’s lives, then “started launching signed footballs for $10K each!” according to Santa.

It was an exciting return trip to Sin City, where Mahomes and Kelce’s Chiefs won Super Bowl 2024 in February.

Kansas City defeated the San Francisco 49ers in overtime, 25-22, to claim their third championship in five seasons.

Swift cheered on Kelce from Allegiant Stadium, where they shared a celebratory kiss on the field .

The couple then partied into the night with Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, who grew close to Swift this past season.

Swift will head to Europe next month, when the Eras Tour resumes in Paris on May 9.

She and Kelce have been enjoying each other’s company this offseason, which included a PDA-filled getaway to the Bahamas in March and a weekend at Coachella earlier this month.

It’s been speculated Kelce will visit Swift overseas.

Louisville, Kentucky

While there are plenty of urban charms to Louisville , the quiet moments speak most deeply to travelers in fall. Franklin, Tennessee

Vibrant fall foliage, charming small businesses, beautifully restored Victorian-era buildings—what more could you want for a fall getaway? You'll find it hard not to be charmed by fall in Franklin . Enjoy breakfast or lunch at local favorite Merridee's , then explore shopping outpost White's Mercantile . Immerse yourself in fall colors on the hiking trails in Timberland Park, or take the beautiful Natchez Trace Parkway to enjoy the scenery with fewer steps. Charles Barkley Jokes Pelicans Don't Even Deserve Offseason Trip to Cancun

If you're a New Orleans Pelicans fan, Saturday was bad enough. The Pelicans completely came apart in Game 3 of their first-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder , losing 106–85 to go down 3–0.

If you're a New Orleans fan who happens to call Galveston, Texas, home, things became significantly worse after the game.

Hall of Fame forward Charles Barkley lit into the Pelicans on TNT's Inside the NBA , suggesting they had played so poorly as to earn a trip to the Gulf Coast city.

"We're not even gonna send them to Cancun. We're gonna send them to Galveston with that dirty a-- water," Barkley said, referencing the Gulf of Mexico beaches. "Y'all quit. Drive your a-- down to Galveston."

The moment left the panel—including Hall of Fame center Shaquille O'Neal—in such hysterics that the show's crew could be heard laughing in the background.

"We're not even giving them a plane ticket to the beach. We're sending their a-- to Galveston, Texas," Barkley said. "Right where that dirty water washed up on the beach. They can't even get in the water."

In her opening remarks, DG Okonjo-Iweala stressed that – already in 1994 – the TRIPS Agreement articulated the compelling idea that the intellectual property (IP) system exists to promote the mutual interests of both producers and users of technological knowledge in a way that promotes social and economic welfare and that balances rights with obligations. "This idea resonates today as we consider the potential contribution of the IP system to the economic, environmental and social equity objectives set out in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," she said. 

DG Okonjo-Iweala emphasized how this idea of balance in the TRIPS Agreement was vitally important during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the late 1990s, "when access to antiretroviral treatments was literally the difference between life and death for millions of people, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa," she noted. In response to this crisis, the 2001 Doha Declaration on TRIPS and Public Health clarified that flexibilities were a core element of the TRIPS Agreement from the outset, and confirmed that governments could legitimately use compulsory licensing and other policies within the TRIPS framework to improve access to medicines.

Initially viewed as a concession by developing economies, DG Okonjo-Iweala emphasized that the TRIPS Agreement has evolved into a practical tool for development. Developing economies have increasingly tailored TRIPS Agreement implementation to their domestic needs, leveraging IP rights for technology transfer and economic growth. However, she noted that controversy persists, such as debates over TRIPS' role in addressing global inequities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

DG Okonjo-Iweala called for ongoing dialogue on TRIPS within the wider trade policy and development landscape. She encouraged members to learn from past experiences to inform future collaboration and cooperation. She also advocated an inclusive conversation to explore diverse policy options within TRIPS, fostering clarity and understanding among WTO members particularly in times of international public health crises.

"The Decision on the TRIPS Agreement reached by consensus at the 12th Ministerial Conference (in June 2022) was another step in the right direction. It clarified the options with respect to some of the most immediate concerns voiced by members in relation to access to vaccines. Like the Doha Declaration two decades earlier, the MC12 Decision was a reminder of the value, indeed the necessity, of greater clarity and understanding about the options that members have," she said.  

DG Okonjo-Iweaka encouraged members to engage in a dialogue to shape a forward-looking agenda for the international IP system, one that strengthens its linkages with the innovation ecosystem, the creative industries, and the diffusion and uptake of technologies that will be critical for sustainable development.

WIPO Director General Daren Tang also delivered opening remarks. He highlighted the significance of multilateralism, international dialogue and collaboration in achieving milestones such as this 30th anniversary. DG Tang emphasized humanity's long history of invention and creativity, noting the importance of IP systems in connecting ideas with society and the market.

The establishment of international IP treaties, such as the Paris and Berne Conventions, laid the foundation for a global IP framework. "And of course, the TRIPS Agreement was groundbreaking because it was the first to directly connect the world of IP with that of trade and investment. This again ushered in a new chapter in the development of the global IP system," he noted.

DG Tang stressed that the global IP landscape has transformed significantly over the past three decades, with cross-border IP payments reaching nearly a trillion dollars. Traditional IP powerhouses have been joined by emerging economies, reflecting a more diversified IP ecosystem, he said. In this regard, he underlined the recognition of the importance of innovation, technology and entrepreneurship in driving growth, particularly in regions like Asia and Africa.

While acknowledging the need for continuous improvement in agreements like TRIPS, he praised the role of the Agreement in supporting innovation and incentivizing creativity. He also reiterated WIPO's commitment to continue working with the WTO Secretariat and members to further enhance the global IP framework for the benefit of all stakeholders.

The keynote speech was delivered by WTO Deputy Director-General Johanna Hill, who outlined three key themes concerning the TRIPS Agreement and its future relevance. Firstly she noted that there has been a transition in perception, as the Agreement was initially viewed from the perspective of the North-South dichotomy and has transformed now into a balanced multilateral platform.

Secondly, she indicated that implementing the TRIPS Agreement has matured beyond mere legal compliance to a nuanced understanding that allows for tailored policy and legal development according to domestic needs. In this context, developing economies have shown significant agency in defining and asserting their interests within the framework of the TRIPS Agreement.

Finally, she pointed to the evolution of IP and trade against a background of a technological revolution, notably with the emergence of the internet and the digital economy. TRIPS negotiations, initially focused on the value of IP in traded goods, have expanded to encompass broader digital and intangible goods, reflecting a profound shift in the global IP landscape.

The challenge ahead, DDG Hill added, is how to continue delivering in a radically transformed technological, economic and geopolitical environment, even if the bedrock principles of a balanced and effective IP system remain the same. 

"I believe we have a common responsibility and an exciting opportunity to reflect on the practical lessons from the TRIPS implementation over the past three decades. I think we also have to apply these lessons in a positive collaborative way to bring about the improvements in social and economic welfare that TRIPS calls for. The WTO Secretariat team stands ready to support these efforts, just as it has steadfastly done for the past three decades," she said.

Antony Taubman, Director of the WTO's Intellectual Property, Government Procurement and Competition Division, provided an overview of the TRIPS Agreement from the Secretariat's perspective. He noted the over 6,000 legislative notifications provided by members in the last 30 years on their distinct approaches to implementing TRIPS principles. He encouraged members to use them as a practical policy resource and valuable source of information for policymakers. He also highlighted the value of discussions on IP matters in the Trade Policy Review mechanism.

In a panel discussion moderated by the Chair of the Council for TRIPS, Ambassador Pimchanok Pitfield of Thailand, member representatives shared their perspectives on TRIPS implementation and the operation of the Council. They also reflected on future areas of work for members in the TRIPS context.

In a final panel discussion chaired by Mr Taubman, representatives from international organizations, non-governmental organizations, academia and the private sector discussed the impact of the TRIPS Agreement and the future challenges for IP policy at a time of dramatic technological change.
