Playing catch-up: TravelCenters of America kick-starts franchising

Converting existing truck stops to ta model preferred to building from the ground up.

' src=

TravelCenters of America ( NASDAQ: TA ) is pulling the franchise lever to grow its presence on the highway map.

Actively pursuing franchisees to take over existing truck stops is one of CEO Jon Pertchik’s approaches to growing the TA, Petro Stopping Centers and TA Express travel center brands. A new TA Express franchise opened Wednesday in Mount Vernon, Texas.

“The competitors have been eating our lunch in the last few years in terms of adding dots on the map,” Pertchik told FreightWaves in a March interview. Converting existing good-quality independent truck stops in great locations to the TA model is the most efficient way to close the gap, he said.

Long way to go

By the numbers, that gap is large.

Westlake, Ohio-based TA has about 260 locations in 44 states and Canada. Pilot has 750 locations in 44 states and six Canadian provinces and ranked No. 10 on the 2019 Forbes list of America’s largest private companies. Love’s has more than 500 truck stops and convenience stores in 41 states and ranked No.17 on the same list.

“It’s a great alignment of interests,” Pertchik said in the interview. “The independents don’t get access to the big fleet business. By working with us, they do. The flip side is we can be even more successful in serving our fleet customers by having more dots on the map.”

Said Robert Berkstresser, franchise principal of Petro Stopping Centers in Raphine, Virginia, and the TA in Lexington, Virginia: “If you want to compete, you need to be aligned with a successful brand.”

New agreements

TA has signed 18 new franchise agreements under its travel center brands since the beginning of 2019. All are expected to be open by the first quarter of 2021. TA also is negotiating franchise agreements for 13 travel centers in Western and Southern states. It is in later-stage discussions with six locations and has more than 80 other potential franchisees in the pipeline.

Pilot and Love’s are not waiting for TA. Pilot plans 20 new locations this year and 20 more in 2021, CEO Jimmy Haslam said in February. Love’s plans up to 40 new stores this year on top of 29 opened in 2019.

The franchising push is part of a May 1 reorganization in which TA laid off 130 corporate office employees and hired senior vice presidents to oversee business development, information technology and a newly created hospitality department to oversee consolidation of restaurants, gaming and convenience stores.

“Franchising is a key driver for the continued expansion of the business,” Pertchik said. “We believe putting the accelerator on this aspect of operations will allow us to become a growth engine and serve more customers and communities.”

Third generation

Some of TA’s franchises are now run by the grandchildren of the original franchisee, said Dave Raco, TA vice president of Franchise Operations.

“They stay with us,” he said. “We are recognized for our nearly 50 years of business success in the industry, and independent operators around the country are excited to become our partners to share in the same experiences.”

TravelCenters of America Accelerates Expansion, Pursues Franchising Opportunities

In addition, the company announced a new TA Express franchise opening in Mt. Vernon, Texas.

“We believe there are significant opportunities for continued growth through franchising and in early 2020, we began rapidly increasing our engagement efforts and broadening our reach with potential franchisees,” said Jon Pertchik, CEO of TA. “We have a team dedicated to identifying and actively pursuing excellent franchisees who are committed to providing our customers with the services and amenities they’ve come to trust and rely on at our travel centers.”

Since the beginning of 2019, TA has signed 18 new franchise agreements under one of TA’s travel center brands. Four opened in 2019 and in the first half of 2020, eight new franchise sites are open or anticipated to open in the following cities:

  • Kilgore, Texas
  • Salina, Utah
  • Wasco, Ore.
  • West Point, Ga.
  • Mt. Vernon, Texas
  • Vermillion, S.D. (anticipated June opening)
  • Nacogdoches, Texas (anticipated June opening)
  • Lake City, Fla. (anticipated June opening)

TA expects an additional six will open by the end of the first quarter of 2021. Other cities TA expects to be part of its franchise expansion this year include Huntington, Ore.; Cookeville, Tenn.; Edgerton, Kan. and South Houston, Texas.

In addition, TA is currently negotiating franchise agreements for 13 travel centers across states in the western and southern U.S. The company is also engaged in later stages of discussions with operators of another six locations, and has more than 80 other potential franchisees in the pipeline across states including California, Texas, Nevada and Missouri.

“We have some of the best independent travel operators in the country operating under franchise agreements and in many cases, we are now working with the grandchildren of the original franchise principals,” said Dave Raco, Vice President of Franchise Operations. “They stay with us. We are recognized for our nearly 50 years of business success in the industry and independent operators around the country are excited to become our partners to share in the same experiences.”

“My relationship with TravelCenters of America has allowed me to thrive in a highly competitive market. If you want to compete, you need to be aligned with a successful brand,” said Robert Berkstresser, franchise principal of Petro Stopping Centers in Raphine, Virginia and the TA in Lexington, Virginia. “The ability to join in the network-wide fuel and loyalty programs makes us an attractive option to drivers and large fleets. TA and my team share the same commitment to the trucking community and because we’re aligned, my chances of success are dramatically heightened. I’m proud to be a TravelCenters of America franchisee.”

On May 1, 2020, TA made a series of announcements, including a company-wide reorganization, all key steps in a new strategic, long-term plan to improve operational efficiency and profitability.

“Franchising is an integral part of our new strategic plan and a key driver for the continued expansion of the business,” said Pertchik. “We believe putting the accelerator on this aspect of operations will allow us to become a growth engine and serve more customers and communities.”

TravelCenters of America Now Accepting Nominations for the 2025 Citizen Driver Award

August 14, 2024 // Franchising.com // WESTLAKE, OH - TravelCenters of America is now accepting Citizen Driver® nominations! This is the 15th year of the program that TA created to recognize professional drivers who demonstrate traits that bring a high level of respect to the truck driving profession, including good citizenship, safety, health and wellness, community involvement and leadership.

As part of the honor, Citizen Driver Award winners may select a TA, Petro Stopping Center or TA Express location to be dedicated in their name, allowing their story to be continuously displayed for all travelers that pass through. In addition, the winner will receive $5,000 in prize money and TA will make a $2,500 donation to each winner’s organization of choice.

Nominations are being accepted through October 7, 2024. Professional truck drivers can nominate themselves for this award. A panel of trucking professionals will review all the nominees to select the finalists.

The Citizen Driver Program puts a spotlight on some of the most extraordinary drivers today and illustrates the fine examples of professionalism embedded in the truck driving profession. Over 150 nominations for the Citizen Driver award were received last year, from fleet owners and executives, professional drivers, trucking organization members and trucking industry suppliers.

To date, 44 Citizen Drivers have been awarded with this prestigious honor.

TravelCenters of America Acquires 2 Franchises for $45 Million

Love’s Travel Stops opens a Waterloo, New York, location.

April 15, 2022

Travel Centers of America Location

WESTLAKE, Ohio, & OKLAHOMA CITY— TravelCenters of America (TA) has completed the acquisition of two travel center locations for $45 million, according to a news release. The company has acquired Petro Raphine in Virginia and TA Lexington, which were previous TA franchise locations that opened in 2011.

TA said it expects to realize significantly more cashflow from owning these locations than as franchise locations and forecasts these locations will generate about $9 million of site-level earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in 2023.

The Petro Raphine site is under renovation to add 170 new truck parking spaces and expand its existing retail space. Following the work anticipated to be completed this summer, TA expects Petro Raphine to be one of the nation’s largest travel centers based on its nearly 900 truck parking spaces.

“Investing in growth through the addition of company-owned sites is one of our key priorities for capital deployment this year,” said Jonathan Pertchik, chief executive officer of TA. “Located along a busy and strategic highway corridor which serves professional truck drivers, four-wheel travelers and the local communities, we expect these sites to exceed our minimum return thresholds. With the size and breadth of offerings at Petro Raphine, we are adding a flagship location to our company-owned sites and will also benefit from the experienced managers at these locations joining our company.”

Meanwhile, Love’s Travel Stops has opened a location in Waterloo, New York, with 78 truck parking spaces and adding 75 jobs to Seneca County, according to a news release. In honor of the grand opening, Love’s will donate $2,000 to the Seneca County House of Concern.

“The store in Waterloo will offer the amenities Love’s is known for like fresh food and drinks and today’s latest technologies in its Mobile to Go Zone,” said Greg Love, co-CEO of Love’s. “We’re pleased to serve customers at our fifth location in New York and help get them back on the road quickly and safely.”

The 11,000+ square-foot location is open 24/7 and offers various amenities, including a Wendy’s restaurant and a Subway restaurant, opening April 18. The location also has seven RV parking spaces, eight diesel bays, seven showers, laundry facilities, a CAT scale, Speedco (opening later), bean-to-cup gourmet coffee, Mobile to Go Zone with the latest GPS, headsets and smartphone accessories, as well as a dog park.

In January, Love’s said it plans to open more than 40 locations and add more than 3,000 truck parking spaces and 3,000 jobs in 2022.

In 2021, the company opened 38 new locations, added over 3,000 truck parking spaces and donated several million dollars to support its core customer—professional truck drivers, sick and homeless children, veterans and more.
