A disabled traveller was left thousands of pounds out of pocket and almost entirely housebound for months after their wheelchair was broken on a flight to Manchester . Winter Mraz, 36, travelled to Manchester Airport after a flight from Los Angeles on April 3.

However, after landing, they noticed their power chair was bent and making a 'squeaky-grinding' noise. After being contacted to check the chair's condition, its manufacturer confirmed it was 'not safe to use' in its broken state.

But when Winter contacted Aer Lingus, they refused to pay compensation for the £2,700 wheelchair. Winter, who was afraid to use their damaged chair for fear of it collapsing, was left unable to leave their home and has had to spend their life savings on taxis and food deliveries.

"I can stand but I cannot walk more than a metre unless it's on safe, known ground," Winter, who is non-binary, said.

"Since March, I've left my house once or twice a month, because I had a doctor's appointment or an unmissable event that I had to go to. It doesn't make up for the £4,500 in savings that's now completely depleted and it doesn't make up for any of the mental and physical stress."

Winter, from Liverpool , was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and Fibromyalgia in 2009. It means they cannot walk more than a few feet without being in pain.

Winter in an elevator

Winter, who is head of design at craft supplies company Sophie & Toffee, contacted the wheelchair manufacturer EZ Lite Cruiser to evaluate the damage following the flight. The company's report, seen by PA Real Life, concluded the chair had suffered 'serious damage to the frame' and 'we recommend the device is replaced as it not safe to use in the current condition'.

Aer Lingus, who has since apologised, initially refused to offer Winter compensation because the damage was not reported at the time of arrival or within seven days. Now, four months later, the airline has agreed to cover the cost of a new chair but will not offer any further compensation.

"Screw this policy, it needs to change," said Winter.

They noticed the issue after arriving in Manchester

They had travelled to Phoenix to sort out the last of their father's personal affairs after he died last year. On April 3, Winter returned to the UK, flying from Los Angeles to Manchester via Dublin with Irish airline Aer Lingus.

Winter's power wheelchair, which was stowed in the hold, was 'fully functional' during the transfer at Dublin airport. "I have to take my wheelchair right up to the gate, where the airplane is," said Winter. "The chair then gets collapsed down and I have to take the batteries on the flight with me. They put it in last, so that it's the first out."

But after arriving in Manchester, after more than 20 hours of travelling, Winter noticed the chair did not feel right. "At this point I'm in an extreme amount of pain, because we've been travelling for over 20 hours and I've had like more than 50 back surgeries, minor and major," said Winter.

Close up of Winter's wheelchair wheels

"They bring the chair up and every single strap and buckle has been undone, so we put the whole thing back together and when I go to sit in it, it settles weird. The wheels are supposed to be straight, but you could see there was a visible tilt...and it just didn't feel right."

Winter said they flagged the issue to the special assistance staff member but was told because it was late at night, none of the desks were open to make a complaint. "He said if it runs that's great, you can get home safely and then, if there's a problem, get an engineer's report and email it to us," explained Winter who did just that.

A report by the wheelchair manufacturer EZ Lite Cruiser concluded: "The photographs received indicate serious damage to the frame where the wheel assemblies both in the front and rear (motors) appear to have been bent in a manner indicative of a large pressure being put on the device, while in the folded position. Each of the wheels seems to have been pressed down with an extreme force causing them to camber outward. We recommend the device is replaced as it is unsafe to use in the current condition."

Winter sent the report to Aer Lingus several times, requesting compensation for the £2,700 chair and the cost of renting a temporary one, which they did not cover.

According to the company's website: "Damage not reported at the time of arrival must be reported through our Post Travel Enquiry form, within seven days of receiving your baggage." Winter was told on May 15 the company could not accept claims after seven days and was therefore unable to offer any compensation.

Winter, who is due to start a Masters at the University of Liverpool in September, has spent months afraid to use the damaged chair for fear it would collapse, only leaving the house a handful of times when necessary and in case of emergencies.

"When it collapses, if I'm sitting in it, I will be hurt and then I will have a huge, broken metal mess that I can't leave or push," said Winter.

Winter and Dana

"I literally don't know what I would do if it collapses under me." As a result, Winter said they cancelled medical appointments, was unable to go food shopping and struggled with work commitments and socialising.

They even missed out on officiating a close friend's wedding on May 25 due to safety concerns. The whole experience also took a heavy toll on Winter's mental health.

"I have gone from being completely independent to having to rely on others to have my basic needs met," said Winter. "It's been a horrendous mental stress and I've been more depressed than I have been since I was a goth in an American high school.

"It got so bad that my friend Dana was sending me text messages reminding me to eat every day because I was that depressed and in that much pain."

Winter left thousands out of pocket

The additional cost of living without being able leave their home has decimated Winter's savings, which have plummeted from £4,500 to just £200.

"At this point I've just drained all of my savings just trying to get around and live, because I can't go to Tesco's or the grocery store, I have to pay for delivery which costs so much more money. Not to mention the sheer amount of Ubers I've had to use."

In a bid to regain independence, Winter's friend Dana, who has a large following on YouTube, launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe which has so far received £3,000, with one person anonymously donating £1,000. "The response has been amazing and has helped put pressure on the company," said Winter.

Four months after Winter reported the damage, Aer Lingus has finally agreed to cover the cost of a new chair, excluding shipping. "I received the payment last night (August 27) but they were happy to let me rot for four-and-a-half months," said Winter.

An Aer Lingus spokesperson said: "Aer Lingus sincerely regrets that this customer's wheelchair was damaged during travel with us. Our policy is that customers report any damage incurred to their property within seven days of travel but we understand that this was not possible in this instance.

"Our customer team liaised directly with this customer to advise them of their options for repair or replacement of the damaged wheelchair. We acknowledge that this issue must have been very stressful for the customer and we apologise for this."

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson speaking to Sky Sports : "You are right. I [still] love Jurgen Klopp. I will love him for the rest of my life, he knows that.

"But the determination, the quality of our manager [Arne Slot] and the way he works... He demands from the team.

"Everyone is working their socks off. It's a third clean sheet in a row. It is not only that we are saving them at the back - the team is working so hard. This is the mentality that the manager wants us to have."

*Alisson hears someone shout in the background*

"We have to go now because the manager wants to speak!"

Alisson then translates the answers from Luis Diaz to Sky Sports : "He's very happy to score goals and help the team. He said the most important thing is the team is doing well and winning these important games.

"He's looking forward to the rest. He is so happy and he wants to keep that rhythm and keep going.

"He says it's what we, as strikers, have to do - score goals and get assists. He will keep working in a humble way to help the team achieve our goals."

Liverpool fully deserved the victory and it's a sobering day for Erik ten Hag, for United's players and the new ownership sitting in the stands on mass - they will be thinking 'are we on track here?'

Mohamed Salah of Liverpool celebrates

Mohamed Salah has scored 10 goals in nine appearances at Old Trafford for Liverpool in all competitions.

He is only the second player to score 10+ goals at a single away ground for Premier League clubs since 1992-93, after Alan Shearer (10 at Elland Road).

The Egyptian has either scored (11) or assisted (six) 17 of Liverpool's last 23 Premier League goals against Manchester United – he has more goal involvements versus the Red Devils (17) than any other player in the competition.

And while we're at it, Salah is the first player to score in five straight away appearances against Manchester United in the Premier League.

Almost the main positive for United is that it was only 3-0. For a while it looked like a proper demolition could be coming.

They were slightly better after making some subs. Amad Diallo was good. But still that was just awful.

Three points from three Premier League games for Erik ten Hag's United.

Match of the Day 2: How Man Utd paid for 'massive mistakes' against Liverpool

Liverpool maintained their flawless start under new manager Arne Slot as they outclassed woeful Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The visitors were on a different level to United in a win so comprehensive that it will bring renewed scrutiny on Slot's fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag, who survived a summer review to win a new contract following last season's FA Cup win.

Liverpool have barely missed a beat since Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp, recording three straight Premier League wins now without conceding a goal, and this was the most impressive display so far.

Trent Alexander-Arnold had already had a goal disallowed for offside before Luis Diaz struck twice in quick succession just before the interval to put Liverpool in complete command.

Casemiro, who endured a first-half nightmare before being replaced, was the culprit twice as he conceded possession, with Diaz heading home Mohamed Salah's cross at the far post after 35 minutes before sweeping in the Egyptian's pass in front of the Stretford End seven minutes later.

Salah, inevitably, got in on the act with his 12th goal in 15 appearances against United after 56 minutes, beating Andre Onana from Dominik Szoboszlai’s pass.

United had opportunities, mainly through Joshua Zirkzee, but there were only occasional moments of anxiety for Liverpool as they put Ten Hag's side firmly in their place.

'I'm not Harry Potter' - Ten Hag defends Man Utd after Liverpool loss

Ten Hag already feeling the heat

Big mistakes and Liverpool were clinical – Ten Hag

United manager Ten Hag wanted a fast start after keeping his job in the summer, an outcome that was surely helped by the FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

The lack of a credible and available alternative also appeared to play into the decision-making process of co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the new Old Trafford hierarchy.

Rather than roar out of the blocks, though, United have snatched a win with a late goal against Fulham at Old Trafford before losing at Brighton, and now they have been swept aside by Liverpool.

There were jeers from United's fans at half-time and the end here, as well as when Ten Hag replaced Alejandro Garnacho with Amad Diallo in the second half.

He had already been forced to make what was effectively a mercy change at half-time, replacing Casemiro after a grim display in which he helped Liverpool score their first two goals by conceding possession too easily.

It made for an uncomfortable afternoon for Ratcliffe, watching grim-faced from the directors' box as the hope of a new start was punctured by the pain of watching Liverpool tear United apart.

There were mitigating circumstances for Ten Hag, with the new signing from Paris St-Germain, Manuel Ugarte, not available to play. Another summer acquisition in Leny Yoro is injured, as are Mason Mount, Luke Shaw and Rasmus Hojlund.

Such factors cannot disguise, however, the lack of quality in this United side as Liverpool taught them a harsh lesson in control, intensity and end product.

This was exemplified by the sight of Casemiro, the once great midfield man at Real Madrid, who looked a spent force last season and would have left in the summer had United been able to find a buyer, playing so poorly that Ten Hag was prepared to send on 20-year-old Toby Collyer to replace him for the second half.

The Premier League season may only be in its infancy but defeats of this nature will inevitably put Ten Hag under the microscope in such a vital campaign – and the problem with handing a manager what effectively appeared to be a stay of execution is that they are always one bad result away from speculation.

This is why this meeting with old adversaries Liverpool was so vital and the manner in which United were beaten may prove to be so significant.

Slot's evolution gathers pace

Slot 'impressed' with hard-working Liverpool

Premier League newcomer Slot made a smooth start at Liverpool with victories away at newly promoted Ipswich Town and at home against Brentford – but a trip to Old Trafford was regarded as the first serious examination of the new post-Klopp era.

This emphatic win came at a ground where Klopp’s Liverpool lost in the FA Cup quarter-final last season and were also held to a draw in April, a result that damaged their chances of challenging Arsenal and Manchester City in the title race.

Those two games were perfect examples of the wonderfully entertaining, but occasionally chaotic, brand of football Klopp delivered at Liverpool as they lost control on both occasions after dominating.

Slot still has all of Liverpool's attacking tools at his disposal but is clearly intent on adding a layer of measured control to their style, which his team showed here as they were never in danger of relinquishing their hold on affairs once Diaz had given them that two-goal advantage.

On the rare occasions United did threaten, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson demonstrated his world-class quality, frustrating the erratic Zirkzee in particular.

In pretty much every other respect, this was business as usual for Liverpool - a side full of threat, especially in the shape of Salah, who has made such a habit of tormenting United and did so again.

This was, however, a complete Liverpool performance which left Slot and his players taking the acclaim of their elated supporters at the final whistle.

And as Slot's name rang out, the Dutchman responded with a modest wave and a clenched fist. There were none of Klopp's trademark fist pumps, but the deafening roars from the travelling fans suggested the new boss has already won those Liverpool hearts.

Match Facts

Manchester United have won just one of their last 12 Premier League meetings with Liverpool (D5 L6), beating them 2-1 at Old Trafford in their third game of the 2022-23 campaign.

Liverpool have lost just one of their last six Premier League away games against Manchester United (W2 D3), while only Manchester City (9) have won away at Old Trafford more often than the Reds (7) in the competition’s history.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, Manchester United have lost 13 of their 35 Premier League games played in September (W19 D3), only losing more often in May since 2013-14 (15). It’s more defeats than they suffered in the month in 76 games under the Scotsman (W45 D19 L12).

Liverpool have won both of their Premier League games 2-0 this season. Twice before have they won each of their first three in a campaign without conceding, doing so in 2013-14 and 2018-19 – they beat Man Utd 1-0 on 1st September in the third game in the former.

No team has had more shots than Liverpool in the Premier League this season (37), while the Reds also have the highest expected goals total (5.3) and the lowest expected goals against total (1) so far.

Liverpool’s Arne Slot and Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag met four times during their time in the Dutch Eredivisie – Slot’s AZ beat Ten Hag’s Ajax twice in 2019-20, before ten Hag twice beat Slot’s Feyenoord side in 2021-22. This is the first Premier League game between two Dutch managers since February 2016, when Guus Hiddink’s Chelsea won 2-1 at Ronald Koeman’s Southampton.

This will be Arne Slot’s first game in charge of Liverpool against Manchester United. None of the Reds’ last nine managers have won their first league meeting with the Red Devils, since Bob Paisley beat them 3-1 in November 1975.
