Day 1 - Velliangiri Seven Hills Trek - Your Ultimate Guide

  • Section 1: Poondi Temple to Vellai Vinayakar Temple on 1st Hill
  • Time Taken: Approximately 50 minutes
  • The trek commences at the Poondi Temple, where you'll need to remove your footwear initially. After about 5 minutes of climbing, you can put on your footwear again.
  • The initial climb is steep, so take your time. You can also take a break at the Ganesha shrine on the 1st Hill before proceeding.
  • Section 2: Vellai Vinayakar Temple to Kai Thatti Sonai
  • Time Taken: Approximately 1 hour 10 minutes
  • As you leave the Ganesha temple behind, you'll encounter the "Vazhukku Paarai" or slippery rock after about 20 minutes of climbing. Be cautious, especially in the monsoon. You'll find a small stream to your right shortly after, where you can refill your bottles.
  • This spot is near the Paambatti Siddhar Guhai, a meditation cave. The climb continues moderately until you reach Kai Thatti Sonai, where another water source awaits in a little cave.
  • Section 3: Kai Thatti Sonai to Aandi Sonai
  • Time Taken: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes
  • This section is known for its scenic beauty. About 15 minutes after leaving Kai Thatti Sonai, you'll emerge into the open at a significant altitude, with the Siruvani Valley on your left and the ridge of the hills on your right. 
  • You'll cross a small roadside shrine and notice that stone steps end here. Beyond this point is a mud trail. 
  • Keep following the trail, and on the 5th hill, you'll spot the Bheeman Kali Urundai, a large round stone. 
  • Further ahead, you'll get your first glimpse of the 7th hill summit. After about half an hour, you'll descend to Aandi Sonai.
  • Section 4: Aandi Sonai to Velliangiri Summit
  • Time Taken: Approximately 1 hour
  • Aandi Sonai is where a stream forms a small pool of water. You can take a dip here and refill your bottles slightly upstream. 
  • From here, you'll embark on the steepest part of the trek to reach the summit of the 7th hill. 
  • At the summit lies a Swayambhu Linga. Legend has it that Lord Shiva spent time on this hill, earning it names like "Then Kailayam" or Kailash of the South.

The Velliangiri Mountains, (Tamil: வெள்ளியங்கிரி மலை) a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, are situated at the Western Ghats border of Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu bordering Palakkad District, Kerala. Known as the “Sapthagiri, 7 Hills (Tamil: சப்தகிரி, ஏழுமலை) – Seven Mountains”, these mountains are held and revered on par with spiritually most powerful place on the planet – Mount Kailash, the legendary abode of Lord Shiva. On the top of the Velliangiri Mountains, Shiva is worshipped as Swayambhu, one who is self-created and in this form, he graces the devotees.

Story of Velliangiri

As per the Kachiappar Perur Purana, Lord Shiva in the hill of Kailayam (Mount Kailash), was worshipped by Lord Vishnu-Komuni. The gracious Lord Shiva appeared before him and asked, “What is your wish?” “My eyes have not seen your dance of grace (Aananda Thaandava). So I wish to see that, said Vishnu. Lord Shiva said: “The two sages Patanjali and Vyaghrapada have performed some of their virtues, and I showed them my dance in Vellinangiri.(Om Nama Shivaya)

In the same way, Lord Vishnu obeyed the command of the Lord Shiva, wearing the Rudraksham, Lord Vishnu went to the southwest of Velliangiri hills and worshipped Lord Shiva.

2. Do not throw anything here and there. It is your responsibility to keep the place clean and green

Connectivity

If you are travelling by air, Coimbatore International Airport is the nearest airport which is nearly 50 km away from the destination. Coimbatore Airport is well-served by both domestic and international tourists. From the airport, opt for a private or a shared taxi to get to this popular attraction.

Approximately 33 km away is the Mettupalayam Railway Station and around 29 km away is the Ooty Railway Station. You can enjoy a train service at any of the stations. These 2 stations connect Ooty with the metro cities of India such as Kochi, Jaipur, Puri, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Kanyakumari and more. After arriving in Ooty, experience the further journey through  Nilgiri Toy Train  to have the best time of your life.

Road Ways :

Choose to travel by road if you want to feel the magic of Ooty on your way. There are several private and government-owned buses that operate daily for the convenience of tourists. You can also hire a private vehicle from one of the  leading car rental companies in Ooty  for hassle free commutation within the hill station. However, the entry of the vehicles up to the falls is not allowed, so one must need to trek to reach Catherine Falls.

"You are not going to complete the trek. You will turn back half way through the trek". I'm pretty sure this will be the first words coming out from anyone who knows about the Vellingiri Trek. If you ask me, they are partly right; especially for person like me whos typical day starts and ends without much physical exercises. But, if you have a strong will and a great tea to support you to get there, its not impossible. So here I am sharing how I climbed 7 hills to reach atop the Kailash of the south.

I was asked once to join the trek, a year before by my team mates in office. Doing the usual research about the place before the trek/trip and asking people for suggestions, even the ones who invited me I was scared and turned down the opportunity. A year passed and the same people asked again for the same trek and this time I was determined to at least give a try to this sacred trek. Instead of reading articles and finding reasons to not do the trek, I was reading about the Vellingiri hills rising the hype for that final feel atop the 7th hill near the Vellingiri aandavar (Lord Shiva).

The Shivalinga on the top of the 7th hill is swayambhu which means its was created by its own accord. The Vellingiri hills are considered to be as sacred as the Kailash and hence it's also known by the name Thenkailaya in the local language which translates into "the Kailash of the south". The pilgrimage season starts from February and lasts till May. During the season, there you'll get enough stalls on the trail for quick bites and drinks. Also, a forest check post opens at the entrance of the trail to collect the plastic materials from the pilgrims/trekkers. Keep in mind you are in deep forest area and plastics are harmful to the wildlife. For your safety stick to the trails and stay in groups.

The Trek Experience

Velliangiri temple - poondi.

The trek trail, that starts from the Poondi temple at the foothills of the Vellingiri Hills, approximately 30KMs from Coimbatore town, traverses seven hills to finally reach the adobe of Lord Shiva on the top of 7th Hill. The trek can be categorised as a difficult one as you have to negotiate uphill that are steep enough to push your mind to return from the trek. The season for pilgrimage is close to collect drinkable water from; pambatti sunai on the second hill and kaithatti sunai on the third hill. Refill your bottles with some cool natural water here, take a break and enjoy the night sky above you and views of the Coimbatore city in night lights. The fourth hill takes you straight up to the top of the mountain and be ready to skip a beat as you enter the grasslands at the top with nothing over your head but the starlit sky and the forest and city down the valley.5th and 6th gives you the much wanted relaxation as you proceed as these two are almost plane and you need to climb down the 6th hill. The Vellingiri hills as legends from Mahabharata where the Pandavas are believed to have come during their exile.

The sukku coffee (ginger coffee) gives you the much wanted energy to push yourself further. During your rest breaks, especially on the 5th and 6th hills, feel the sky that now feels like a hand's distance away. I was lucky enough to see a shooting start passing by for the first time in my life up there. Be cautious also as the shola forests nearing the grasslands might have wild animals behind them so do your trek without interfering into their lives. Once you are finished with 6th hill. A small pond awaits you. Freshen up here and start your final ascend. This will be tough, you are this close to your destination yet you are not there. It'll feel like climbing forever but take enough breaks and finally reach the top to get darshan of the swayambhu Vellingiri aandavar. Get some sleep if needed, take rest and start you climb down to reach the foothill before sun gets too hard on you. You can see the sunrise on your way down also.

As it was night I couldn't get enough pics. When on the grasslands, the clouds will be below you and its a sight to be seen during day. Hopefully I will get a chance to go up there during daylight to feel the complete beauty of the trek.

- Carry enough energy bars/snacks with you

- Carry at least two litters of water with you. It wont be enough, but you can fill it on the way

- Carry enough source of light, torch with extra cells as with out them all you can see is darkness around you.

- Get a bamboo stick from the foothills for 30 Rupees and cut to suit you. This is your best friend especially during your climb down where you'd feel the need of extra support.

- Avoid carrying plastics. Take out your snack wraps and take them in paper wraps. The forest check post will provide the required papers to cover your snacks.

- Dont wander around and litter around, you are guest to the forest.

- Finally, help, support and motivate each other.

I had just recovered from a fairly severe flu that I got in February. One of my friends invited me to join him in a trek to Velliangiri hills. I've gone to treks with him before, but they were easy ones. He said that it would be a challenging one. I had wanted to do a trek that was more difficult than previous ones. Also, I wanted to put my body to test again after recovering from the flu. The last challenging thing that I had done was a 3.5 hour, 25k run three months ago and before I got the flu. Hence I decided to join him in this trek. I'm writing this from memory and have perhaps forgotten quite a many details, though the most siginifant experiences remain in memory.

Velliangiri hills is a group of seven hills in Coimbatore. They are sacred hills and there is a temple to Lord Shiva in the seventh hill. The pilgrimage (and trekking) is allowed from February to mid May. During this months, its not raining and there isn't movement of elephants along the way either, making pilgrimage/trekking viable. Entry is controlled by the Forest Department. Also, women from 10-50 years of age are not allowed here by the temple for religious reasons. Menstruating women are considred as 'impure' in Hinduism , restricted from some activities, including entry in many temples (though there are temples in which only women are allowed). The trek starts from a temple at the foot of the first hill.

My friend, I and a couple of his acquaintences came here by joining with a pilgrimage group from Trichy. The group consisted of mainly families from the non-teaching staff of my college. They had hired two vans for the pilgrimage. My friend knew them and they allowed him and his friends to join. Before reaching the Velliangiri hills, we visited a few other temples along the way in Coimbatore.

After a visit to those temples, we reached a temple at the foot of the first Velliangiri hill at the afternoon of the April 1. The group which we accompanied had planned to stay in the temple overnight. Hence during that time, we would trek.

We started the trek around 2:45pm. We had to go through the temple at the foot of the hill. Footwear wasn't allowed inside the temple and hence we carried our shoes in our bags. There was someone selling some bamboo sticks for climbing. The hills were steep and it was recommened to use some sticks for climbing. Once we crossed the temple, we started the trek. Unlike other treks which started of easy, I was immediately confronted by a steep flight of stairs. I started off slowly. My heart was pounding by climbing this steep stairs, but it was not a problem. Being a half marathon runner, climbing up wasn't a problem for me. It would tire me out, but won't cause any other problem. All I had to do was to take breaks now and then to recover. The early summer climate was fairly warm (though not unpleasantly hot) at this point of time.

The afternoon sun lighted the decidious forest in the hills providing a nice scenetic view. The paved stairs soon came to an end. Beyond this the path was uneven, making trekking challenging. After reaching what I thought was the peak of the first hill, there was a short distance of steep descent. I felt a little tired, but could continue. Till this time, I had no idea what lay ahead. Not even the distance.

There were small shacks selling water and fruit juice along the way. A glass of lemon juice cost Rs. 30 (probably fair enough, as they have to carry it all the way here). They provided much needed water for the pilgrims. One of the shacks had the flag of the ruling party (BJP) of the country. Either the shop keeper is a member of the party or the shop is sponsored by them. Since I already had brought plenty of water, I didn't have to buy water from them.

We climbed up and down the hills (I lost count after sometime because there were several ups and downs, though mostly it was an upward trek). The terrain was a mixture of flat, easy walking paths and tough, uneven rocky terrian. The rocky paths made it tough to navigate. The toughest of which was a steep rocky slope about 2 meters, which we had to carefully climb down. There were signifcant fall hazards too - steep cliffs. Falling down in one surely results death. Soon it became twilight. The temparature dropped, but since this was a tropical area, it was tolerable. There were many natural streams and puddles. The water was okay and can be used for drinking if there is no alternative. There was one big puddle which was knee deep. I touched it and it was very very cold! I couldn't keep my hands or feet in more than 10 seconds.

Twilight faded out into darkness. Most of the path was dark and required a torch light. I had brought my bicycle's rechargeable LED lamps for this purpose. Also my mobile phone's LED light also served the purpose. The only places lighted were the water shacks that we periodically came across. I had never trekked in night before and it was challenging to navigate the uneven terrain at night. It took some time to get used to it. Without a torch, navigating the uneven terrain would be very tough as it is difficult to know where to place your leg. Close to 8pm, we reached the Shiva temple at the seventh hill. We had climbed from an altitude of about 500 m at the foot of the first hill to about 1900 m at the top of the seventh hill (saw altitude at using the osmand app) and travelled perhaps about 13 km (according to sources, though in a straight line in a map that does not take into account ups and downs, it was only 5 km). I was a little exhaused after climbing all the seven hills, but the worst is yet to come. The temple had some space to sit. We sat and ate the food that we had brought.

After spending some time here, we started our trek back. I've always had trouble climbing down steep paths. Perhaps due to my relatively short height or some fear. I nervously climb down slopes and this results in me putting too much effort, resulting in my muscles getting tired out eaisily. The trek was mostly downward now. I experienced increasing levels of soreness as I climbed down.

Also I got lost at one point of time. During a break near one of the water shacks(probably in the 5th hill), I set off in the opposite direction. Only after a while I discovered my friends weren't following me. I thought that they might catch up. But they didn't. My suspiction of going into the wrong path heightened after I came across a steep slope which I had traversed earlier. I asked one person for a direction and he pointed out that I had been going in the wrong direction. I turned back. Now I encountered a situation something which I had never experienced before - travelling completely alone in the dark of an unfamiliar land! It was scary, but I prevented myself from panicking and continued. For about fifteen minutes, I saw no one and I was travelling by the light of my mobile phone's light which struggled to penetrate the darkness. I was vividly aware of crossing steep drops. Soon, I came back to the site in which I and my friends took a break. They weren't there and had probably travelled. I found them waiting for me at the next water shack.

My soreness increased as time went by and I became slower than usual. My mobile phone was expending a charge of about 1% for every 5 minutes (network connectivity was disabled to save battery) to power its LED light. I used it for most of the climb down and about halfway down, the battery was down to about 20%. I decided to save it for last and I used a rather bright bicycle lamp. It had a runtime of about 2 hours promised by the manufacturer. I probably had about 3-4 hours of journey left. I decided to use the lamp as much as possible.

In the last quarter of the journey, I experienced levels of pain that I had never experienced before. I would walk for sometime and then stop. It was a nightmare. Till now, I hadn't seen many people. But after midnight, I saw lot of people coming up. Almost everyone had a bamboo stick like me and a torch. I saw kids, young and old men and old women (women of 10-50 years age are not allowed). Most people climb barefoot (I had trekking boots). My friend told me that most pilgrims trek up here only during the night. Starting at afternoon had its advantages though, in that you can take pictures and experience trekking during day and night.

I slowed down so much that my friends, who were weary themselves and wanted to finish the trek as soon as possible, went ahead. The pain I experienced reached unbearable levels. The one think I can compare to is the trial of pain that Lt. Worf of the star ship Enterprise faces in Star Trek. I took plenty of breaks when climbing down in the last part of the trek. Why would people endure so much pain to visit God? Cursing my friend for bringing me to this trek and promising myself that I'd tell him of next day, I lumbered on slowly. The bright torch lasted for about 3 hours. For close to two hours, it was in full brightness and for the last hour, it slowly faded out. After what it seemed like an eternity, around half past 2 at night, I reached the temple in the bottom of the first hill. It was some relief and was completely exhausted.

I vaguely noticed that another group from my college too had come here for trekking. After this, I slept on the floor of the outer part of the temple. The inner part of the temple was already occupied with sleeping people. Not being used to sleeping on the floor and not having brought any bed sheets for this, I didn't get much sleep. After about 3 hours of poor sleep, I woke up at 6am. The group with whom we had travelled from Trichy had arranged breakfast. It was pongal and vadai . It felt good eating after the gruelling trek.

After having breakfast, I didn't feel much at getting angry with my friend for this trek. My soreness had significantly reduced. After having breakfast, we traveled back to Trichy. The return journey had a minor incident - the other vehicle of the group ended up having a tyre burst, which fortunately didn't result in anything serious. I experienced moderate severe levels of soreness ( DOMS ) the next day. This was surprising as I was expecting some sort of injury or inflamation in joints. This remains the most gruelling trek that I've done till date. One day I hope that I'll do even more challenging treks once the coronavirus pandemic is over.

Velliangiri Hills Trek: Women are not allowed to trek this mountain

The scenic visuals of Velliangiri Hills may tempt you to plan a trek, but there’s more to it before you head straight to explore the place. Being one of the toughest treks in South India, Velliangiri near Coimbatore has seven hills with a summit situated at 1,850 meters above sea level.

One of the attractions, apart from the greenery, is the Velliangiri Aandavar temple (Shiva temple), located at the top of the seventh hill. The shrine attracts the public, especially during the month of March when Maha Shivaratri is celebrated. The hills and the trekking routes are closed throughou t the year but open between February and May.

The recent deaths of the trekkers scanning the mountain have led to concerns about the tough terrain and also the lack of preparedness and premedical tests of the enthusiastic trekkers ahead of the trek.

Velliangiri hills: Nine deaths in four months

Between March and May 2024, nine people, including youngsters, died during the Velliangiri trek. The common factors among all the deceased were breathlessness, severe dehydration and heart attack. Some of the victims who had a history of comorbidities of hypertension and diabetes also suffered from fluctuation in blood pressure and blood sugar levels. 

The deaths also hinted at the lack of medical facilities at the base camp to check the health status of the trekkers before their climb.

Following thousands of devotees’ treks up the hills every year, the forest department and the state government have appealed to devotees and trekkers to undergo medical check-ups before planning a trek to the seventh hill.

Velliangiri Hills: Tough terrain, not for everyone

Speaking to Happiest Health , T Suseendranath, Boluvampatti forest range officer (covering Velliangiri hills), said this trek is one of the toughest and is not advisable for those with comorbid conditions. “Last year, six people died during the trek, which rose to nine this year. The majority of them had chronic conditions which worsened during the trek. Devotees are being made aware of the difficulty of the trek and are advised not to go ahead if they have any preexisting medical conditions,” he said.

In February 2024, a 23-year-old man succumbed to cardiac arrest after reaching the sixth hill along with his friends. There were also instances of people dying of breathlessness and severe dehydration . People with severe health complications are often brought down the hill in a dolly and are taken to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital for treatment.  

Health camp at 4 th Hill

The forest department has set up a health camp on the 4 th Velliangiri Hill to aid those in need. “It’s a 6.5-kilometer trek with an elevation of 1,850 meters. Healthcare staff are deployed to provide first aid to those in need,” said Surendranath.

Dr A Nirmala, dean of Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), said that one must know whether they are physically fit and if their body can withstand the stress before planning the journey. “ Many youngsters may have heart ailments or health complications which they may not be aware of. When they choose to do activities such as trekking, which adds more stress to the heart and lungs, it may result in worsening the condition. They could be asymptomatic in planes and may exhibit the symptoms as they climb up the peak,” she said.

Basic life support training is a must

“Everyone must learn the basic life support training to aid during medical emergencies. Though the government is taking steps to train the public, everyone must learn the techniques and be able to perform CPR when needed,” said Dr Nirmala.

To avoid severe dehydration, Dr Nirmala suggests that people prepare themselves well enough before the trek and ensure they are well-h ydrated throughout the trek by drinking plenty of water using an oral rehydration solution .

Senthil Subramaniam, a techie from Bangalore who has been an avid trekker, recalls his experience of the Vellianagiri trek. “I have trekked the hills about three to four times. The first two to three hills are tough to cross and are steep. Due to its difficult terrain, it is always advised to go in groups. Climbing up the hills and sudden changes in altitude can easily make us feel breathless. Without having good stamina or being physically fit, it is impossible to complete the trek,” he told Happiest Health.

“Though it’s hot and humid at the base. The temperature changes as we climb up and can become freezing cold at the top. Not everyone can get acclimatized to this change and often suffer from altitude sickness,” said Subramaniam. He added that if someone is having difficulty climbing up the hill, they should stop and not push themselves.

Following multiple fatalities during the trek, the Tamil Nadu Government released a set of advisories for those visiting Villiangiri. “People with health conditions like wheezing, obesity, diabetes, elders, fever, heart diseases or people who have undergone severe treatments for covid infection must consult the doctors before deciding to trek up the hill,” stated the release. It also suggested that such individuals must avoid trekking.

Velliangiri Hills consists of seven hills with an elevation of 1,850 meters, near Coimbatore, and is considered one of the toughest treks in South India. Thousands of devotees of Lord Shiva visit the hills to offer their prayers at the Velliangiri Aandavar temple situated at the peak between February and May every year, during which multiple deaths are witnessed. The forest department and the state government have advised all the devotees and trekkers to undergo a premedical check-up before planning the trek and avoid it if they have any ailments.

You Have To See This Ancient Grove Of Giant Trees In Idaho With Your Own Eyes

Discover the ancient and serene Hobo Cedar Grove on Moscow Mountain in North Idaho, home to 1,000-year-old cedar trees.

Hiding at the top of Moscow Mountain in North Idaho is a grove of ancient and absolutely beautiful cedar trees. Surprisingly few people know about this magical spot, probably due to it's location. The trails can be hard to locate and will definitely require the use of a forest service map. However, once you do find this place, you won't be sorry you made the extra effort. This place is absolutely majestic, and it's hard to believe it's been hiding in Idaho all this time.

To find the ancient grove, you'll head to the eastern side of Moscow Mountain near Moscow, Idaho.

Trail #255 is the Hobo Cedar Grove Trail. The loop trail has a very gradual gradient, making it perfect for hikers of all ages and skill levels. There are also many benches along the way to stop, rest, and take in the incredible view off the side of the mountain.

These trees are estimated to be up to 1,000 years old! The cedars are simply massive, with most of them about 10 feet in diameter.

Most people probably think they'd have to travel to somewhere like California to see gigantic trees like this. Who knew these cedars were hiding in Idaho's own backyard?

There aren't many cedar groves this old left in the world. Most of them have been destroyed, but the one on top of Moscow Mountain remains. Thankfully.

The first thing that sticks out about the atmosphere is just how serene it is. It's usually never crowded, and it's even likely you'll be the only one in the area.

This is the perfect place to find calm and relaxation in nature. The only sound you'll hear is the rustling of wildlife and the soft rippling of nearby springs.

There's something incredibly humbling about looking up and seeing only the canopies of these majestic trees.

Not to mention the fact that these trees have outlived generations and generations of humans! They were here long before America was even colonized.

The area is well maintained and there is a lot to be explored nearby, including the remains of an old lumber camp! You'll even see remnants of the camp's machinery.

It's crazy that more people don't know about this incredible area. Part of what makes living in Idaho so amazing is stumbling upon these unique hidden treasures that you won't find anywhere else.

Exploring This National Forest In Northern Idaho Is The Definition Of An Underrated Adventure

Do you have a favorite forest in Idaho? With so many options such as the Boise National Forest, Caribou-Targhee National Forest, and even the Hobo Cedar Grove , there are incredible places to surround yourself with nature. But there is one forest located in northern Idaho that is often overlooked. It is the Kaniksu National Forest, and it is an underrated adventure just waiting to be explored.

The Kaniksu National Forest is no small national forest. But, when compared to others in the state, it’s certainly not the largest. This national forest has a total area of more than 1.6 million acres.

In comparison, the Salmon-Challis National Forest is more than 4.2 million acres.

The forest is located in the panhandle and its headquarters are found in Coeur d’Alene. It is one of the three Idaho Panhandle National Forests. Parts of the forest spread into Montana and Washington but more than 50 percent is located in our great state.

There are several popular attractions and natural wonders tucked away in this forest but my personal favorite way to explore is on a hike. The Kaniksu National Forest is home to more than two dozen trails of all difficulties and all lengths so you can easily find an amazing adventure.

Located near Sandpoint, and tucked away in this national forest is Hunt Lake and the Hunt Lake Trail . This trail is 2.2 miles in length and is considered moderate in difficulty.

While beautiful all year long, the views are especially mesmerizing in the fall. The vibrant fall colors create a scene that makes this northern Idaho adventure unforgettable.

This forest is also a delightful camping destination with many campsites spread throughout its borders. Consider sleeping under the stars at campgrounds like Copper Creek near Bonners Ferry, Robinson Lake Campground near Bonners Ferry, and Sam Owen Campground near Sandpoint.

Here Are The Best Times And Places To View Idaho’s Fall Foliage In 2023

Idaho's fall foliage is best experienced with proper timing and the help of an interactive map.

It can be hard to say goodbye to summer but fall in Idaho is always welcome. The vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges create scenery that is breathtaking all around the state. However, to fully immerse yourself in the Gem State’s fall foliage, it is all about timing. Rather than search online for “When do leaves change color in Idaho?,” the folks at SmokyMountains.com created an interactive Idaho fall foliage map 2023 to give us a hint.

The first official day of fall is September 23 and around this time in northern Idaho, signs of fall will be appearing. During this time, you’ll start to see reds, oranges, and yellows dancing all around the panhandle.

Early and mid-October are some of the best times to view fall foliage in central Idaho. This is a wonderful time to go for a walk along the jaw-dropping Boise River Greenbelt.

Sun Valley is also breathtaking during this time of year and you'll find it less crowded than during the summer and winter months.

My personal favorite places to admire fall foliage are areas like Stanley and Redfish Lake. It is pure magic.

By October 23, fall foliage in the panhandle will start to fade away but in southern Idaho, this is when the colors are at their peak. Plan a visit to destinations like Shoshone Falls, Mesa Falls, and City of Rocks National Reserve.

By early November, peak fall foliage in Idaho will be at an end across the state. Fall foliage in Idaho may be short lived, but it is certainly beautiful.
