Madonna

After the opening night of The Celebration Tour in London on Saturday (Oct. 14) night at the O2 Arena, the verdict is in: Madonna is back.

Despite a brush with death, the Queen of Pop delivered a two-hour-plus show full of smash hits, killer deep cuts and a surprise or two (or three). Candid as ever, Madonna didn’t shy away from addressing her hospital stay in June due to a “serious bacterial infection” that caused her Celebration Tour’s opening to be pushed back by three months.

17 Best Moments From Madonna's Celebration Tour Opening Night in London

“I didn’t think I was going to make it,” she stated bluntly at one point in the evening. “I forgot five days of my life — or death, I didn’t really know where I was.” Madonna said it was her family, ultimately, who pulled her through. “My children were there — and my children always save me every time.” Calling it her “secret” to survival, Madonna said she simply tells herself, “I have got to be there for my children – I have to survive for them.” Five of her children were on stage with her during the tour opener in London: Mercy James, David Banda, Lourdes, Estere and Stella. And it seems that moving forward, at least four of her kids will be joining her on stage each night as performers.

Joining her throughout the tour, too, is Bob the Drag Queen, a RuPaul’s Drag Race winner and LGBTQ comedy legend in the making. Recounting Madonna’s arrival at LaGuardia airport in the late ‘70s to take on New York City with nothing but $35, Bob tossed a wad of cash into the crowd at the top of the show and drily offered, “Use this and become a star.”

How to get tickets for Ms. Lauryn Hill and The Fugees’s 2024 UK tour: presale, ticket prices and everything you need to know

The Miseducation Anniversary Tour will feature music from the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, The Score, and more

Annie McNamee

You don’t need to get nostalgic to enjoy The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill , but it certainly doesn’t hurt. Nearly 30 years after its release, the album holds up as strongly as it did on day one, and is still often mentioned in lists of the best albums of all time. And  The Score , Lauryn Hill’s earlier hit with the Fugees, stands just as strong: both are undeniable, bona fide classics.

Always wanted to see  The Miseducation and  The Score live? Today’s your lucky day. Ms Lauryn Hill and the Fugees have just announced a co-headlining tour in the UK this autumn.

Naturally, this tour isn’t one to be missed. Here’s everything you need to know to bag tickets when they come out later this week.

When are Ms. Lauryn Hill and The Fugees going on their UK tour?

The tour will begin in the US in August, and will make its way across the pond in October for two exclusive nights in London and Manchester .

When do tickets go on sale?

General sale will begin this Friday (June 28) at 10am BST for both UK dates. You’ll be able to buy yours from Ticketmaster here  or LiveNation here .

What’s the deal with presale?

There will be a Mastercard presale, available to Mastercard holders only. This will be held at the same time as general sale, but card holders will be given first access to tickets. You’ll be able to access the sale from both Ticketmaster and LiveNation, as above.

There will be a seperate Co-op Live presale for Co-op members tomorrow (June 26) at 10am. You can sign up to become a member for £1. Sign up here .

You can also access a Metropolis presale by signing up here for free. That one will be on Thursday (June 27) at 10am.

How much are tickets for Ms. Lauryn Hill and The Fugees?

Ticket prices for UK dates aren’t yet available, but in Europe they started at €67.20 (£56.70), so they’ll probably begin around £50-70 over here.

What UK dates have been confirmed?

The tour will come to UK shores for just two nights this October.

  • October 12 – Manchester, Co-Op Live
  • October 14 – London, O2 Arena

Who is the support act for the Miseducation Anniversary Tour?

Lauryn Hill and The Fugees will be supported by Lauren's own son YG Marley. His debut single went TikTok viral last year, so it’s clear that he’s putting his impressive lineage to good use.

AEG PRESENTS and AIKEN PROMOTIONS are delighted to announce that legendary American rock band JOURNEY will be bringing their 50 th Anniversary Freedom Tour to the UK & Ireland later this year, playing 11 arena shows in October and November, culminating in a performance at London’s O2 Arena.

JOURNEY originally formed in San Francisco in 1973 and soon became one of the biggest bands in America, with nineteen Top 40 Billboard hits in the US, and huge global hits such as ‘Don’t Stop Believin’, ‘Open Arms’, ‘Faithfully’, ‘Any Way You Want It’ and ‘Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)’, taking them to over 100 million album sales worldwide. The band – featuring lead guitarist Neal Schon, keyboardist Jonathan Cain and vocalist Arnel Pineda – released their sixteenth and most recent studio album, entitled Freedom , in 2022 and embarked on their 50 th Anniversary tour in 2023.

Currently on a headline arena tour of the USA, JOURNEY will be spending the summer on a co-headline stadium tour of America with Def Leppard, before bringing their much-anticipated 50 th Anniversary tour to the UK & Ireland this autumn. Main support on all dates comes from the acclaimed Illinois power-pop quartet CHEAP TRICK , who are also celebrating their 50 th Anniversary this year.

Neal Schon comments, "It's been too long since we've seen you all! We are all very excited to be coming back to the UK and playing with our good friends Cheap Trick, who I’ve known and played with since the 70s. It’s going to be a great party for all!"

CHEAP TRICK are loved around the world for their instantly identifiable and hugely influential union of wit, melody, powerhouse pop hooks and razor-sharp riffs. With global hits such as ‘Surrender’, ‘The Flame’, ‘Dream Police’ and ‘I Want You To Want Me’, they released their most recent studio album In Another World in 2021 to global acclaim.

I went to the Girls Aloud reunion concert and had The Show of a lifetime

Cheryl, nicola roberts, nadine coyle and kimberley walsh were on top form at london's o2 arena for the girls aloud show.

Girls Aloud - Kimberley Walsh, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts and Cheryl onstage at The Girls Aloud show

Twenty-two years ago, I spent my Saturday nights glued to Popstars: The Rivals , rooting for the girls in what promised to be the ultimate girl band versus boy band chart battle. After weeks of whittling down the contestants, five lucky girls were chosen for the girl band: Cheryl Tweedy , Nicola Roberts , Nadine Coyle , Sarah Harding and Kimberley Walsh . Their name? Girls Aloud . The boy band? Never heard of again. Girl power hadn't been this compelling since the Spice Girls – and I was obsessed.

Flash forward to 2024 and the band is back together, performing a sold-out reunion tour with 30 dates across Ireland and the United Kingdom, including five nights at London's O2 Arena. After Sarah tragically lost her fight with breast cancer in 2021 , aged just 39, I wasn't sure where this left the group. But Girls Aloud proved their charisma, stage presence and certified pop bangers still hold up as a foursome.

Girls Aloud open concert with Untouchable

Here's everything you need to know if you're hitting up The Girls Aloud Show... Spoiler: I am still obsessed.

Pop perfection

More girls aloud.

The band holds the Guinness World Record for having 20 consecutive UK Top 10 singles, so there naturally wasn't a dud song on the setlist. From the debut single that made them a household name, Sound of the Underground , to their Ten reunion material (including my favourite toe-tapper, Something New ), Girls Aloud proved they've got the music catalogue to sell out an arena tour.

The Girls Aloud Show - Cheryl, Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts

The group was always ahead of its time, with songs breaking classic pop conventions. Take fan favourite tune The Show as a case in point, which sounds like three songs rolled into one. This innovation is perhaps why their hits still stand up two decades on.

And they've certainly got the fanbase. As my friend put it, Girls Aloud are for the girls, the gays, and the largely millennial audience was living out their teenage dreams. I was also pleasantly surprised to see a more varied crowd than expected; gaggles of girls in their early twenties who knew every word, young children with their parents and retired couples wearing matching merch.

Tributes to Sarah Harding

I was apprehensive about how they would pay tribute to Sarah. A brief nod would have felt trite and tokenistic given that her absence loomed large over the night. However, the girls did her justice by weaving mentions of their late bandmate throughout the setlist.

Girls Aloud tribute to Sarah Harding during concert in London

Sarah was repeatedly spotlighted during the show; the girls fell silent as her iconic solos played on the screens behind them, including during The Promise finale with her now bittersweet line, "Here I am, a walking primrose, wondering if I'll ever see you again".

As Nadine – her closest friend in the band – referenced "our gorgeous Sarah", her voice quivered, and my heart went out to the foursome, performing alongside a ghost night after night.

Girls Aloud performing The Promise with tribute to Sarah Harding

Naturally, Whole Lotta History was dedicated entirely to Sarah. The girls left the stage as Sarah's outro played on a loop followed by a black and white video montage highlighting her vivacious personality, eliciting a respectful silence followed by piercing cheers from the crowd. Girls Aloud fans will know that Sarah was always the fun one, and the one who loved performing the most, so it was special to see that highlighted.

Following Sarah's death, Girls Aloud raised over £1 million for breast cancer research and their fundraising continues to this day. The singer's legacy is a groundbreaking breast cancer research project aiming to identify young women at increased risk of contracting the disease. The message on the night was loud and clear – Sarah might be gone but she will never be forgotten.

And with their renewed energy and electric onstage chemistry, it was clear Sarah's absence had brought them closer, cementing their bond as a band.

The verdict

The girls appeared awestruck by the London crowd's energy. Taking multiple breaks between songs to address the audience and thank them for their generous applause and support, I caught Nicola, Kimberley, Nadine and Cheryl repeatedly exchanging looks of disbelief. It was as though they couldn't quite believe people still cared, 11 years after their last comeback tour.

But to me, it's a no-brainer. Girls Aloud proved they've still got the loyal support, catalogue of hits, and talent to make it in an ever-changing music industry, which desperately needs more girl groups and joyful pop escapism. If they were to release new music, I, for one, would be front row at The Show .

O2 Arena: Everything You Need To Know Before Going To A Gig

O2Arena View o2

Built within the former Millenium Dome , this giant arena sits on the north tip of the Greenwich Peninsula in SE London and is known for hosting some of the biggest events, whether music, comedy or sports. Unsurprisingly, that means the place can hold up to 20,000 people, and there’s a large space for standing in the stalls, as well as wide-ranging seating options surrounding the stalls.

One of its best features is the fact the complex and surrounding area are home to a lot of restaurants and eateries, meaning you’ll never go hungry before the show.

Getting To The o2

It’s easy to get to the O2 Arena on public transport, with it being only a 2-minute walk from North Greenwich Station, on the Jubilee Line. That said, the large number of crowds at such a high-capacity venue can mean big queues to enter and get on a train after the show.

02 arena tour

Going to the venue by car? With 2100 car parking spaces, the O2 complex is well equipped to handle drivers. Those attending an O2 Arena event should use Car Park 1 and pre-booking is recommended. Blue badge parking spaces are available. Valet parking is also an option.

02 arena tour

What time do gigs start and finish at the o2?

The venue’s website and social pages often give this info on the day, as do the bands and promoters. A general rule of thumb for the main act is 21.00/21.30, but this is highly variable. And don’t forget to support the support acts, who usually come on around 20.00 at the o2 Arena.

To ensure you catch your last train home , gigs tend to finish by 22.15 (Monday-Saturday), or 22.00 on Sundays. As mentioned above, there are often big queues when a gig finishes as there’s only one tube station close by.

02 arena tour

Queueing At o2 Arena

There are several entrances into the Arena (A, B, E, F, G, H), which can be used for access to the standing and seated areas. Staff will direct you to a suitable entrance if you approach.

The main Arena entrances for gigs are Entrance E, B, and H, both inside the O2 Complex. Entrance B is the closest to the Main Entrance (opposite the tube station) and is also where those with Priority Access can enter.

Entrance A is the usual route for VIP/suite access.

Security Check At o2 Arena

You are allowed to take small bags and handbags (no larger than A4 size) into the venue. One bag is permitted per person. Backpacks, travel cases, laptop bags and large tote bags are not allowed.

Cloakroom Service At o2 Arena

There is a cloakroom service in the O2 Arena but only for those with tickets for standing areas (not for those in seating areas). The cloakroom can be found as you enter the arena at Entrance E.

Coats cost GBP 3 and Bags GBP 5. There is a limited capacity and once full the cloakroom will no longer accept any more items. It closes 30 minutes after the show ends.

There is also a Bag Storage Facility for large bags outside the main entrance to the O2 complex at a cost of GBP 10 per bag. This facility closes 30 minutes after the show ends.

1975 at o2 arena

Where is the merch stand in the venue?

Merch stands are available in the main foyer, as well as on Level 1 and Level 4 inside the arena.

02 arena tour

For disabled access

The venue recommends those with mobility issues use Entrance B by the main entrance to the O2 complex, though the main concourses are step- and level-free, with accessible lifts available. Staff are available to escort wheelchair users to their seats.

There is a raised viewing platform on Level 1 with free standing fold out seats for accompanying guests. Assistance dogs are permitted and can stay in wheelchair bays. Accessible toilets are available. The venue also offers Assistive Listening Devices for those with or without hearing aids.

Lucky enough to be on the guest list?

Guestlist attendees will pick up their passes from the Box Office outside the O2 Complex (just to the left of the main entrance as you enter). Entrance A is the usual route for VIP/Premiun/suite access.

What happened the night Led Zeppelin played live one last time

In 2007 Led Zeppelin played their historic Celebration Day reunion show at London’s O2 Arena. We were there.

Led Zeppelin onstage at the O2

Good Times, Bad Times Ramble On Black Dog In My Time Of Dying For Your Life Trampled Under Foot Nobody’s Fault But Mine No Quarter Since I’ve Been Loving You Dazed And Confused Stairway To Heaven The Song Remains The Same Misty Mountain Hop Kashmir

Encores Whole Lotta Love Rock And Roll

In the days before The Gig, Classic Rock is interviewed by Sky News, Canadian television, the Los Angeles Times . They all ask the same question: why is everyone so excited about the return of Led Zeppelin ? Classic Rock whitters on about how Zeppelin masterfully mixed the blues with folk and rock and soul and Eastern music, about how they’re up there with The Beatles and the Rolling Stones , about how – short of Jimi Hendrix coming back from the dead – this is as big as it gets.

You can see it in the guest list. Within spitting-distance of Classic Rock – and among the people, it’s safe to say, who never won their tickets via the ballot – are Kate and Naomi, Noel and Liam, Marilyn Manson , Joe Elliott , Dave Mustaine , Juliette Lewis and, like, that fella from Crowded House. Somewhere in the building, Paul McCartney , Mick Jagger , Priscilla Presley and Lulu are fighting over the vol au vents. Saxon at Butlins it most definitely isn’t.

“But what’s all the fuss?” asked the TV people, “I mean, aren’t they a bit old…?”

In no other industry could you get away with even asking that question. (Next time you’re interviewing someone for a job at your workplace, trying telling unsuccessful candidates: “Well, you’ve got the talent – in fact if anything you’re over-qualified – but I’m afraid you’re too old for us. If you were in your 20s, the job would be yours…” Just see how long it takes before your arse is dragged through the courts.)

Zeppelin answer the question better than we ever could. A 70s TV screen appears out of the darkness and an American news report reminds us that the band out-sold The Beatles. Seconds later the defiant opening chords of Good Times, Bad Times explode from the stage.

Led Zeppelin Celebration Day ticket

As an opener, it’s perfect: not just the first song on their first album, but a short, ballsy, feedback-strewn statement of intent, Plant kicking his mic stand into the air, Page suited and booted, legs akimbo – still the ultimate guitar hero.

There was speculation that Zep would ‘do a Pink Floyd’ and lean on a spectacular light show to carry the show; they do exactly the very opposite. The house lights stay on most of the night (annoyingly so, to anyone who wants to get lost in the darkness). The stage is bathed in white light, the band gathered around the drum riser for much of the gig – not Plant on a pedestal at the front, not Page in a spotlight every time he does a solo.

The message is clear: this isn’t some bullshit showbiz act. This isn’t the Stones and their travelling jukebox. This is a band. Led fucking Zeppelin. Three old guys (and their sorcerers’ apprentice), sure, but three old guys who can still perform with dignity.

Ramble On serves notice that there’s going to be some surprises: by our reckoning it’s never been played live in its entirety before and the fact that Plant has in the past admitted embarrassment at its Tolkien-referencing lyrics suggests that, far from being the reluctant party, the singer has thrown himself into this and is giving it his all.

Black Dog gets the crowd singing. Then, just when you think it’s going to be all crowd pleasers, there’s worthy epic In My Time Of Dying , followed by the live debut of For Your Life , from Presence . (Followed immediately by the sound of around 19,000 people turning to each other and saying under their breath: “Which one is this again?”)

Trampled Under Foot gets the funk out and the supermodels dancing. Plant introduces Nobody’s Fault But Mine with references to the Staple Singers' and Blind Willie Johnson versions and joking that “We musta first heard this in a church in Mississippi in 1932…”

His harmonica solo is suitably ear-rattling, and he finishes by spinning the harp high in the air and catching it. For No Quarter , dry ice floods the stage as John Paul Jones lays on the atmospherics and Jimmy Page hits the wah-wah. On Dazed And Confused Page starts pulling his hands off the strings like the guitar is stinging him, before getting the violin bow out for some alchemy/whale song/bullshit (depending on how stoned you are).

The video screens get more and more trippy, mashing up the spectacle right before our eyes. Next thing you know he’s holding a double-necked SG and we’re climbing a Stairway To Heaven . The notes that would get you kicked out of guitar shops across the country ring out, distortion saving the song from the recorded version’s twee excesses. Plant sings ‘ And the forests will echo with laughter ’, and the stadium echoes instead with his ad lib from The Song Remains The Same : “Does anybody remember laughter?”

The solo – you know, the one that’s been voted the greatest guitar solo of all time – is great: not slavishly recreating the original, but referencing it enough to acknowledge the respect it’s held in. “Hey Ahmet, we did it!” Plant shouts at the end (because they cocked up Stairway at the Atlantic records bash in 1988?). Some people sit for The Song Remains The Same – one of the night’s few unremarkable moments – but they’re not down for long.

“There are people from 50 countries here tonight,” says Plant. “This is the 51st country…” And then Kashmir starts. At once everyone’s on their feet. We’re plunged into welcome darkness as lights strafe the crowd and grown men are (literally) seen to weep.

You can keep yer Grand Canyon and yer Niagara Falls: this is the eighth wonder of the world. Is it the Zeppelin of old? Of course not. These days there are Thermos flasks and tea mugs on the right-hand side of the drum riser. (On the left, are Jimmy’s bottles of alcohol-free Kaliber lager).

These days, JPJ needs just one keyboard, not banks of them. These days half of the audience seem to view the entire gig through their mobile phones (on the rare occasions that the house lights go off, the floor of the arena twinkles like a star-filled sky). And, these days, the guy on the drums is the son of the guy who used to be on drums. Ironically, he’s the only one with no hair.

“Jason was fucking great,” says Dave Grohl , who knows about these things, in an email to photographer Ross Halfin the following day. “Face it: he had people like me, Chad Smith and [ Black Crowes drummer] Steve Gorman watching his every move, all night long, and afterwards we all agreed that he played great.”

By the end of the show, Bonham Jr isn’t just copying his father’s parts, but also adding his own fills, flailing away, knocking hell out of the kit. When they take a final bow, Jason gets on his knees before them in ‘we’re not worthy pose’ then leaves the stage, clearly emotional, rubbing his head like someone who’s just had his mind blown.

Considering that we have too, and we’re just watching, you can only imagine how he must feel. Tellingly, there are no emotional goodbyes, no “Thanks for coming to see us one last time” speeches, just props to Ahmet and the sight of The World’s Greatest Rock Band reborn walking off the stage.

There’s an old saying: ‘Buy land, because God’s not making any more of it’. He’s not making bands like this any more, either.
