Preparing to travel

Being prepared is the best way to ensure smooth travel. Every airport is different, so do a little research if it's your first time flying to or from a city. You'll need a valid photo ID accepted by the TSA (like a driver’s license or other government-issued ID) for domestic travel and a valid passport or visa, and any travel documents required by your international destination.

Acceptable forms of identification Opens another site in a new window that may not meet accessibility guidelines.

Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or other accepted ID, like a valid passport or U.S. military ID, to fly within the U.S. REAL ID-compliant cards generally have a star at the top. If you’re unsure, contact your state driver’s license agency on how to get a REAL ID-compliant card.

TSA won’t allow you to pass through security checkpoints at the airport if your ID doesn’t comply.

The TSA Secure Flight program requires us to collect this information when you book including the:

  • Name as it appears on the government-issued ID you travel with
  • Date of birth
  • Redress Number (optional)

We may cancel your trip if we don't have this information at least 72 hours before departure.

You can check in on aa.com and in the app beginning 24 hours before departure. All airports have minimum check-in times. If you're not checked in by the minimum check-in time, you may lose your seat.

In most cities, you must be checked in:

  • At least 45 minutes before scheduled departure, for flights within the U.S.
  • At least 60 minutes before scheduled departure, for flights to or from airports outside of the U.S.

Some airports require you to check in earlier.

In general, you're allowed 1 bag and 1 personal item:

  • Your bag must fit in the sizer at the airport.
  • Your personal item must fit under the seat in front of you.

In the event the bins are full and you have to gate-check a bag, put any fragile or valuable items like keys, medication or computers in the personal item you bring on the plane.

There are additional carry-on restrictions for certain aircraft and airports.

Carry-on bags

If you’re a family traveling with children under 15, and do not already have seats assigned, our system will search for seats together automatically before the day of departure. We’ll try our best to keep you together, but if seats are limited, we’ll assign seats so children under 15 are next to at least 1 adult.

Traveling with children and infants

We care about our four-legged customers too. Cats and small dogs can travel in the cabin, but they must stay in an approved carrier that fits under the seat. Larger dogs can travel in the cargo hold of some planes. There is a fee to travel with your pet.

Traveling with pets

Service animals are welcome at no charge if they meet the requirements. The animal must fit on your lap, at your feet or under your seat, and cannot block the aisle.

Emotional support animals require specific documentation; please review the requirements before travel.

Service animals

For everyone's safety on board, some common items are restricted by the TSA and FAA. Be sure you know what you can carry on and what you can check in your bags before you go to the airport.

Hazardous materials

We don't transport hazardous materials, except for small amounts of dry ice.

Restricted items

You can travel with firearms in checked bags only. Firearms must be declared to an agent at check-in. There are other rules that apply.

On occasion, there are more checked-in customers than seats. When this happens, our team gets involved as early as possible to find volunteers to change flights in exchange for compensation.

When we don’t have enough volunteers, we have to choose customers to change flights involuntarily, or deny boarding. If this happens, we'll follow the DOT's compensation rules and get those customers on the next possible flight. We will not involuntarily remove a revenue passenger who has already boarded in order to give a seat to another passenger.

At the gate

You must be at the gate and ready to board the plane:

  • 15 minutes before departure on domestic flights
  • 30 minutes before departure for international flights

Be sure to check your boarding pass for boarding times. If you're not at the gate in time, your seat may be given to a standby passenger.

The doors close at least 10 minutes before departure. Once the door is shut, it will not be reopened unless there is health, safety or security issue.

We board in groups; check your boarding pass for your boarding group. We offer early boarding to customers who need special assistance or more time to board, along with families with children under 2 years who ask to board early.

Strollers should be checked at the gate before boarding and picked up after your flight at the gate, free of charge.

Wheelchairs can be gate-checked and picked up after your flight at the gate, free of charge. We are available to help you to and from your seat once you check your wheelchair.

On the plane

Welcome aboard! Anything you carried on must fit in the overhead bins or under the seat in front of you. If the bins are full or your bag is too big we'll help gate-check it. Musical instruments count as a carry-on and must fit safely in the bin, under the seat or in a closet (unless you paid for an extra seat).

Have a nut allergy? Though we don't serve peanuts, we do serve food that may contain other types of nuts and customers may carry on peanuts. We're unable to make special accommodations or provide nut-free zones on board, so we strongly encourage you to take all necessary medical precautions before flying.

And finally, our crewmembers are here to ensure a safe and pleasant flying experience for you and everyone onboard your flight. Please let them know if you have any questions and be sure to comply with their instructions, which are designed to keep you and everyone on board safe and comfortable.

A comprehensive guide to American Airlines' Same Day Flight Change

JT Genter

Ever been frustrated when a business meeting ends early and you've got to wait around for hours to catch your flight? Or perhaps you didn't want to pay the fare difference between an early flight and the midday flight you'd prefer to take, but now you're dreading that early flight.

If you're flying American Airlines, you aren't necessarily stuck on your original flights. You may be able to use AA's "Same Day Flight Change" (SDFC) program to change your flight within 24 hours of departure for a $75 fee. Even better, this fee is waived for some American Airlines elites.

However, even if you don't have elite status on American Airlines , the $75 fee can be a steal compared to AA's standard $200+ flight change fee plus having to pay the fare difference between your original flight and the new flight.

The trouble is, the rules and restrictions for AA's Same Day Flight Change program are complex. This is certainly a program where you're going to need to know the policies and some tricks to get the most out of it. Let's go over these complexities so you know how and when to use this perk or pay for this service.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

AA's Same Day Flight Change rules

Let's start with the basic rules of AA's policy. True to the "same day" part of the name, your new flight(s) must depart the same calendar day as your original flight(s). For example, if you've booked the first flight Tuesday morning, you're only going to be able to change to a later flight on Tuesday. You can't fly out Monday night instead through a same-day flight change.

Also, the change must be made within 24 hours of the new flight. That means you won't be able to change your flight until the day before or the day of. This can make it tough if you're trying to make plans for your departure or arrival. Also, you can't switch to any flight with an open seat. Instead, there needs to be specific availability on the new flight to make the change. More about how to find that availability below.

But perhaps the most annoying restriction is that you must change to flights on the exact same route as you originally booked. If you're connecting through Chicago-O'Hare (ORD), for example, you can't rebook on a nonstop flight or even one connecting through Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) instead.

You also can't change your flight to a nearby airport. If you found a cheap flight into New York-LaGuardia (LGA) but don't want to deal with the perpetual construction there, you can't SDFC to a flight into the nearby New York-JFK airport.

Fee to Same Day Flight Change

The standard cost for a SDFC "on flights between the 50 United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), Canada, and the Caribbean" is $75 per direction.

Long-haul international flights are generally not eligible for a same-day flight change, but there's one exception. If you're flying between New York-JFK and London-Heathrow (LHR) — including itineraries with connecting flights inside the U.S. — you can make a SDFC for $150 per direction.

Related: The best credit cards for American Airlines flyers

And yes, the SDFC fee is reimbursed by American Express through the airline fee credit .

Who can SDFC for free?

Confirmed, same-day flight change is free for passengers ticketed in first or business class and those booked in full-fare (Y fare) economy . Also, American Airlines Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro elites — plus one companion in the same reservation — also get the option to change for free. Also, American Airlines AirPass ticket holders are eligible for free same-day flight changes.

Historically all award tickets were eligible for same-day flight changes. However, AA's new dynamically-priced "web special" awards have become omnipresent, and these awards aren't eligible to be changed. Instead, these awards have to be canceled and rebooked if you want to switch flights.

If you book a standard MileSAAver or AAnytime award, you will still be able to get complimentary, same-day flight changes. But, award tickets work a bit differently. See below for more on how to SDFC an award ticket.

Searching for availability for paid flights

Most of what's been covered so far can be found on AA's website, but now let's dive deeper into the parts AA doesn't share publicly. To change to a new flight, there must be "E" fare availability on that flight. And unfortunately, the airline's website doesn't show when this is the case.

If you're eyeing a same day flight change while outside of the 24-hour change window, you can check for E fare availability on ExpertFlyer , which is owned by TPG's parent company Red Ventures. To search for this, select the Fare Availability search option. Enter your origin, destination and any connecting airports, the date(s) you're traveling and choose AA as the carrier.

aa modify trip

For simplicity, you can narrow these Fare Availability search results to certain fare codes. When checking ExpertFlyer , I generally limit searches to "FJYE." This searches the number of tickets available for sale in first class (F) — where available — business class / domestic first class (J), economy (Y) and the employee travel / same day flight change bucket (E). This filter gives a decent snapshot of how many seats are still available on a given flight.

aa modify trip

In the example above, you can see that there are (at least) seven business class and economy seats for sale on almost every flight between Charlotte (CLT) and New York's LaGuardia (LGA) for Jan. 8, 2020. Each one of these flights also has availability for (at least) seven same-day flight changes. Just note that this availability is always subject to change as you get closer to departure.

Related: The beginner's guide to ExpertFlyer

Once you're inside the 24-hour change window, you can check availability without an ExpertFlyer subscription by simply logging into AA.com and clicking the SDFC option to see what options you're given for your reservation. However, if you're not ready to commit to a change and want to see how many open spots are left, you'll still need to search ExpertFlyer to find this information. If your ticket is eligible for a SDFC, American's website won't tell you if there's a single seat left or a half-dozen seats left. That must come from ExpertFlyer.

How the 24-hour change window works

Thankfully, the "same day" part of the SDFC program doesn't mean that you have to wait until the calendar day of your departure to make changes. For example, when I wanted to SDFC a 6 a.m. flight from Jacksonville (JAX) to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), I didn't have to stay up until midnight to change my flight. Instead, I was able to change it the day before departure.

Here's where it can be a bit tricky. The time of the original flight doesn't matter for this window. It's the time of the new flight that determines if you can make a change or not. If you're wanting to change a 6 a.m. Monday flight to a flight later Monday, there aren't going to be any available flight options if you check at 6 a.m. Sunday. Instead, you're going to have to wait until 24 hours before the new flight to make the change.

In that JAX-DFW example, I saw in ExpertFlyer that there was availability on the 2 p.m. flight. So, I waited until 2 p.m. the day before departure to check the AA app and process the change.

The reverse is true for moving to a flight earlier in the day. If you want to move to the 8 a.m. flight when you're booked on a noon flight, your window opens at 8 a.m. the day before — not at noon.

It's unclear exactly when the SDFC cutoff is before the new flight, but I found recently that I couldn't make a change in the app at 40 minutes before the new flight.

How to change award tickets

(Photo via Shutterstock)

All AAdvantage award tickets are eligible for complimentary, confirmed, same-day flight changes. That said, unlike on paid tickets, you aren't looking for "E" fare availability. Instead, there has to be award availability on the new flight for you to get a confirmed flight change.

While the SDFC option will show up online and in the app, generally you're going to end up having to call AA to change your flight.

When Same Day Flight Change can be useful

So, why would you want to same day flight change anyway? There are two main reasons I've used it: for a cheaper price and a change in plans.

For a flight between Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) and Atlanta (ATL), the late-night flight option was about $100 cheaper one-way than any of the American Airlines flights during the day. I would've preferred to land in Atlanta midday, but my schedule was flexible enough that I could book this cheapest option knowing that there's a pretty good chance I can use a same-day flight change to an option earlier that day.

There have been other times where I'm connecting on the fastest connection through the airport, but something comes up and I want to check out a new Priority Pass lounge or meet with someone during that layover. A same-day change can get me on an earlier first flight or later connecting flight, allowing a longer layover. Just note that you can't generally can't create a 4+ hour layover through a SDFC.

Related: The best ways to avoid change and cancellation fees on paid flights

Perhaps the most useful use of SDFC for business travelers is the ability to hop on an earlier flight if a meeting or conference ends early -- or switch to a later flight if the meeting runs long.

Finally, you could wind up in the same situation as TPG Editor Nick Ewen a few years back: stuck in a traffic jam en route to the airport. He (thankfully) hadn't booked the last flight of the day, so he was able to call and change to a later flight once it became clear that he was going to miss his original one.

How upgrades work with same-day flight changes

Bingo: An American Airlines (my most-flown airline) 737-800 (my most-flown aircraft) first class seat for a flight from Atlanta to Dallas (two of my most-flown cities).

One of the downsides for SDFC is the upgrade situation. Generally, you're going to give up your upgrade -- and chances of getting an upgrade -- by switching flights.

Also, you might have trouble making a SDFC if you've already gotten an upgrade. Even though the option may show online or on the app, you may not be able to confirm the change until you talk to an agent to downgrade you on the original flight so you can SDFC to a new flight.

Related: The ultimate guide to getting upgraded on American Airlines

However, for my last SDFC in early December, I was able to switch flights while maintaining my upgrade. When I went through the process on the app, it wasn't clear that I'd be confirmed into first class or economy. But once the process was complete, I had a first-class seat for both legs from Washington, D.C. to Charlotte and from Charlotte to Austin:

aa modify trip

However, don't count on maintaining or getting an upgrade when doing an SDFC. Recently, American Airlines has been clearing upgrade lists through "J1" — leaving just one domestic first-class seat for last-minute purchase — at 24 hours to departure. That's great news for those of us who were sick of having to wait for "battleground upgrades" — particularly for flights with meal service or to avoid sub-par seats. However, that means doing a SDFC usually means you're unlikely to get an upgrade on the new flight unless you're a top-tier elite that can snag that last seat just before the plane's door closes.

Bottom line

The ability to change your flight to an earlier or later one can come in handy, and American allows even non-elites to do this for a relatively small fee of $75 per ticket. However, it isn't as simple as it may sound, so I hope this guide has helped show exactly how to approach it the next time you find yourself in need of a last-minute change on an AA-operated flight.

In the not-too-distant past, travelers were practically stuck with a flight once they booked it, as airlines would charge hundreds of dollars to change a flight. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic rocked the airline industry. To get travelers to start booking flights again, many airlines — including American Airlines — did the previously unimaginable: They eliminated change fees .

Now, travelers can change most flights with no fee — whether that's changing to a different flight on the same day or rebooking themselves on an entirely different route.

This change opens a golden opportunity for those seeking the cheapest flight possible. If you find a cheaper flight, you can change to that cheaper flight and capture the price difference as a travel credit.

Let's dig into how American Airlines' change fee policy works and show you how to rebook and save on American Airlines when the price drops.

What you need to know

Does american airlines charge to change flights.

In late 2020, American Airlines removed change fees for most airline tickets. Now, you can cancel or change most American Airlines tickets without paying hundreds of dollars in change fees. You'll only have to pay the difference in price if the new flight is more expensive than what you paid for your original flight.

However, not all American Airlines tickets offer free changes and cancellations. American’s basic economy fares are nonchangeable and nonrefundable. Also, American Airlines only eliminated change fees for flights originating in North or South America. Change fees of up to $750 still apply to flights starting outside North or South America.

Does American Airlines refund flights?

The only potential ways to get an actual refund (not a travel credit) when canceling an American Airlines flight are by booking a refundable fare, canceling within 24 hours of booking the flight — or by purchasing travel insurance.

Otherwise, American Airlines will provide a refund for a nonrefundable ticket only if one of these situations is true:

American changed your flight schedule by more than four hours, and you opt to cancel.

American changes your flight schedule by 90 minutes or more within 72 hours of your originally scheduled departure time, and you opt to cancel.

You receive military orders or change in duty.

The death of the passenger or a traveling companion.

Booking a refundable fare

If you're concerned about whether or not you'll need to cancel your flight (and don't want to get stuck with a flight credit), American Airlines generally offers the option to pay a bit more during the booking process to make your flight fully refundable.

aa modify trip

However, now that American Airlines allows free changes on most flights, it will likely make more sense to book a nonrefundable fare and cancel for a travel credit if your plans change.

Changes within 24 hours of booking

If you find a cheaper American Airlines flight and are still within 24 hours of booking your flight, simply cancel the original booking and rebook a new ticket at a lower price.

If you change your flight within 24 hours of booking, American Airlines will only give you a trip credit for the price difference. But, by canceling the original booking, you'll get a full refund back on your card. Then, you can simply rebook at the cheaper price.

Airlines are required by law to allow full refunds on flight cancellations made within 24 hours of booking — as long as you booked the flight at least seven days before departure. American Airlines' policy is actually even more customer-friendly than the law requires, allowing refunds on flights booked at least two days prior to departure, assuming you cancel within 24 hours.

Travel insurance for canceled flights

If you purchased travel insurance your ticket may be reimbursable, but only if you cancel for one of the covered reasons — or if you've purchased a Cancel For Any Reason policy.

Last-minute flight change eligibility

You can change your American Airlines flight anytime before the scheduled departure time of your first flight. Unlike other airlines, American Airlines doesn't require that you change or cancel your flights at a set time before departure.

If you arrive at the airport late for your flight, head to the check-in counter. American Airlines' unpublished policy lets you rebook on the next available flight as long as you arrive at the airport check-in counter no later than 15 minutes after the scheduled departure time.

That's great news for travelers who just missed their flight. However, if you're looking to change your flight to another date — or another destination entirely — you'll need to make those changes before the scheduled departure time.

Which American Airlines flights can be changed online

American Airlines has a restrictive policy on which flights can be changed online. For the best chance of changing a flight online, use American Airlines' website to book a flight entirely operated by American Airlines and pay using a credit card — instead of a travel credit.

You won't be able to change your American Airlines flight online in certain cases, such as:

You booked a basic economy fare.

You used a gift card, trip credit or voucher to pay for all or part of the flight.

You're trying to rebook the same cabin on the same flight at a lower price.

The flight was booked through AAVacations or another online travel agency.

The itinerary includes a flight operated by a partner airline — even if it's a codeshare with an American Airlines flight number.

If your flight isn't eligible to be changed online, you'll need to call American Airlines’ reservations number to change your flights.

How to rebook your American Airlines flight for a cheaper fare

Found a cheaper American flight? Here's how to rebook this cheaper fare. You can start your flight change in one of two ways.

1. Visit American's homepage or log into your account

The first option is to open aa.com and click "Manage trips/check-in." Enter your last name and flight confirmation code. Then, click "Find your trip."

aa modify trip

The other way to retrieve your flight is to log into your AAdvantage account, click the AAdvantage tab in the top menu bar and navigate to "Your trips” to browse your upcoming trips. Then, click "Select" next to the trip you want to change.

aa modify trip

2. Start the flight change

Once you’re on the trip page, you should see a big blue button on the left-hand side of the page that says "Change trip." Click this button to start your flight change.

aa modify trip

On the next page, click the checkbox next to "Yes, I want to change this flight" to open the flight search options.

aa modify trip

Make any changes you want to the route, date, time of day, class of service and fare type. Then, click "Continue."

3. Review and select new flights

On the next page, you'll see all of your new flight options and the credit or cost for each one. You can sort these results by price, number of stops, departure time, arrival time or travel time.

aa modify trip

Note that American Airlines no longer gives you the option to rebook your same flight at a lower price. If you want to capture a price drop, you'll need to select a different flight — at least at first. You can always change back to your original flight after confirming the first change.

Depending on your fare type, you may be given the option to upgrade to Main Plus or to pay more to make the booking refundable.

aa modify trip

Once you've selected your new flight and fare options, you'll need to confirm your choice. If you're happy with the flight, click the "continue" button at the bottom.

aa modify trip

Then, select your seats on the next page.

4. Confirm your flight change

Next, American Airlines will confirm the details of the new flight along with either the credit amount or the amount you need to pay — if any.

aa modify trip

At the bottom of this page, enter your email address for the receipt and check the box to agree to the terms and conditions. Finally, click "submit change" to submit your change request.

aa modify trip

Finally, American Airlines will confirm that your trip was changed and provide a new record locator and ticket number for your new flight.

5. Find your flight credit

After you change your flight, American Airlines will send you an email with the trip credit number. Or, if you're an AAdvantage member, you can check your AAdvantage Wallet to see your travel credits.

How to find cheap American Airlines flights

The best way to shop for cheaper American Airlines flights is to set a "track prices" alert on Google Flights. To do this, perform a Google Flights search for the route and date that you booked. To limit to American Airlines, click the "airline" filter and select American Airlines.

If you want to be alerted to a price drop on any flight scheduled that day, toggle the button to "Track prices" at the top left of the search results page.

aa modify trip

If you only want to track prices for a specific flight, select that flight from the results, then toggle the "Track prices" button on the next page, as shown below.

Google Flights will start tracking flights and email you when the price changes. If the price drops, hurry over to American Airlines' website to rebook the flight at the lower fare.

Getting cheap AA flights when rebooking recapped

Now that American Airlines has eliminated change fees, travelers can save when flight prices drop. When you see a price drop, log into your reservation and click on the blue "change flight" button to start a flight change. You can change to a cheaper flight in just a few steps and no fees.

If you want to keep your current flight, American Airlines has added a bit more complexity. You'll first need to confirm the change to a different flight before changing back to your original flight. At the end of the process, you'll score a travel credit for the price difference.

The trickiest part is finding out when prices drop, but you can use a flight price tracking service like Google Flights to automate this.

Ex-American Airlines worker gets nine years in prison for cocaine smuggling

The airline mechanic man was caught looking for cocaine bricks under an international flight, federal agents said.

aa modify trip

A federal judge sentenced an American Airlines mechanic to nine years in prison Friday for transporting cocaine into the country through the fuselage of a 737.

The man started stalking the plane as soon as it landed, federal agents said.

American Airlines flight 1349 from Jamaica arrived at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport the afternoon of Feb. 4, 2020.

It was a fine New York winter day for those returning from a tropical getaway — dry with a low of 39 — but 30-year airline employee Paul Bryan Belloisi wasn’t supposed to have cargo on the manifest.

Belloisi, now 56, made his big move as the plane geared up to take off again, sneaking into a compartment under the aircraft while passengers boarded above him just after 7 p.m., federal agents said. Belloisi, the feds said, was looking for a 25-pound stash of cocaine that had been squirreled away for him.

As Belloisi got down from the compartment, the man was met by Customs and Border Patrol agents. “What’s up, guys?” he said, according to a federal complaint.

Agents had searched the plane hours earlier and had replaced the real cocaine with fake bricks covered in black-light spray, according to court filings. They were watching as Belloisi entered the compartment, the agents said, and they scanned his hands with a black light after he climbed down, catching him glow-handed under the ultraviolet lamp.

Belloisi’s attorneys fought the charges, arguing that there was no evidence he was involved in any drug-trafficking conspiracy and that the court had been too harsh.

“The sentencing went far beyond what is necessary,” his attorney, David Jason Cohen, told The Washington Post on Saturday.

Cohen wrote to the court that the sentence was far longer than similar cases, especially because he is “a first-time offender, a faithful husband and loving father of three daughters.”

Belloisi was three days past his 30th American Airlines work anniversary when the flight landed at JFK International Airport from Montego Bay , Jamaica.

Two officers with Customs and Border Patrol, Michael Robinson and Frank Morelli, selected the plane for what the judge described as a random search before adding that “Jamaica is a known transit country for narcotics coming into the United States.”

As Morelli watched crews offload the baggage, Robinson searched the plane’s exterior panels. All was normal until he opened the avionics compartment, according to the judge. The avionics compartment houses systems used for heating and cooling, navigation, communication, autopilot and collision avoidance.

Robinson moved an insulation blanket and found 10 bricks of cocaine, which prosecutors estimate would retail for $250,000.

The officers replaced the drugs with sham bricks and sprayed them and the blanket with a chemical that glows under a black light. They also placed a radio transponder that would send a signal if the bricks were disturbed.

Belloisi opened the compartment about a half-hour before the plane was set to take off for San Diego, according to the agents. Belloisi took off his American Airlines jacket, revealing to officers that the jacket’s lining had been cut in the chest and held makeshift pockets, the agents said.

The jacket, along with the sham bricks and the real bricks, were all on the prosecution’s exhibit list.

A jury found Belloisi guilty of three drug counts — conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute, conspiracy to import cocaine and importation of cocaine — May 2, 2023, following a week-long trial, according to court records.

A couple of weeks later, Cohen and the defense team filed a request for the judge to acquit.

“Upon a full review and consideration of the evidence presented to the jury at trial, it is clear that the evidence was insufficient to establish the defendant’s guilt of each of the elements of any of three charges against him,” the defense attorneys wrote.

U.S. District Judge Dora L. Irizarry denied the request, writing that prosecutors had proved their case.

Cohen said that the judge restricted the defense’s ability to cross-examine witnesses and that they intend to appeal the sentence based on what he said were errors by the court.

“It was a bad courtroom to be in,” Cohen said.

Flight attendant union rejects American Airlines' proposed 17% pay raise

American Airlines flight attendants hold signs and picket outside the White House

The labor union that represents  American Airlines  flight attendants on Wednesday rejected a company proposal to immediately raise pay by 17%.

CEO Robert Isom offered flight attendants immediate 17% wage increases earlier Wednesday as contract talks continue without a deal, bringing the prospect of a strike closer.

The airline and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants have struggled to reach a new contract agreement, differing on major issues, such as pay. Flight attendants haven’t received contract raises since before the pandemic.

“We have made progress in a number of key areas, but there is still a good deal of work to be done,” Isom said in a video message to flight attendants.

The union said the two sides are scheduled to meet with federal mediators next week for a “last-ditch” effort to get a deal done, adding that flight attendants   were told to prepare for a strike.

Strikes are extremely rare among airline employees. The last took place in 2010 among Spirit Airlines pilots. If the two parties can’t reach a deal, a release by federal mediators would be triggered, a process that would take several weeks.

“So, to get you more money now, we presented APFA with a proposal that offers immediate wage increases of 17% and a new formula that would increase your profit sharing,” Isom said Wednesday. “This means we’ve offered increased pay for all flight attendants and are not asking your union for anything in return. This is unusual, but these are unusual times.”

Julie Hedrick, the union’s national president, said that the airline’s focus should be on preparing a longer-term deal with the flight attendants.

“This is not that,” she said.

Also on Wednesday, the union said it opened a “strike command center” with dedicated phone lines and other resources to answer cabin crew questions.

U.S. airline pilots largely locked in new labor deals last year, while flight attendants at American,  United  Airlines and  Alaska  Airlines are  still negotiating .

Last month, a bipartisan group of more than 160 House representatives wrote to the National Mediation Board, urging it to help  complete deals  with airlines and flight attendants.

Schedule Change

Travel Agency Procedures

Schedule Change Processing Guidelines

A Schedule Change is a planned change that may occur more than 72 hours prior to the flight’s scheduled departure. Examples - Change of flight times, change of equipment or carrier, flight cancellation due to a reduction in frequency, etc.

Whenever this occurs to a ticketed customer's itinerary, American Airlines will try to offer alternate protection whenever possible, maintaining the original ticketed origin and destination, including original length of stay.

It is important to note that due to nuances in Schedule Change system processing between other airlines and different GDS systems, our AA PNR may not always reflect the most recent other airline schedule change information.  For these scenarios, please continue to follow the indicated guidelines within this policy based on the schedule change that was received in your agency PNR.  Although the other airline schedule change may not appear in our AA PNR, these flights are still reported to AA for auditing purposes .

Additionally, American’s automated re-accommodation will queue all received schedule changes to the booking source for notification.  It is the responsibility of the booking source to accept the schedule change on their customer’s behalf, notify the customer of the change, and reissue or revalidate the ticket as applicable. If an alternate preferred flights is booked following our Schedule Change policy guidelines, the Reissue/ Revalidation (if applicable) must be done at time of rebooking.

Note: If the only change is to the flight number, the customer does not qualify for alternate flight re-accommodation or refund.

·           A reissue is not required for tickets containing AA Prime space only, and online check-in will not be affected.

·           If the ticket contains AA*/Codeshare or OA Prime flights, the ticket must be reissued.

As an industry standard, the travel professional will continue to annotate SKCHG in the endorsement box when reissuing the ticket.

Schedule Change service requests guidelines:

·           The cut off time for International is 3 hours

·           Bookings that reflect the “C/” in the Name Field (Groups of 10 or more and  Corporate  bookings) will need to contact the Group and Meeting Travel (GMT) desk.

·           This option would apply when the AA Prime flights don’t qualify for a revalidation (connection city change, for example)

·           When the AA Prime flights do not qualify for a revalidation, a reissue is required

3.      Reissue 300-Mile:

·           SalesLink will verify that the new flights meeting the Schedule Change guidelines and will document the PNR

Revalidation

Revalidation can only occur on American and American Eagle Prime flights and is not applicable if any part of the itinerary involves codeshare space.  Typically, the AA Reaccom tool will revalidate eligible itineraries through automation and will send an SSR advising a  reval  has been performed. For example:

For schedule changes which occurred prior to January 16, 2022:

·           ATTN AGY TKT ALREADY REVAL BY AA PER SCHD CHNG  ddmm  (date)

For schedule changes which occur on/after January 16, 2022:

·           ATTN AGY TKT REVALD FOR AA FLIGHTS ONLY PER SKD CHG  ddmm  (date)

This action does not prevent the agency from revalidating again should the customer find the change unacceptable.

Travel Agent Guidelines for Revalidation

When the customer does not accept the new itinerary, the itinerary may be changed according to Schedule Change guidelines as provided in this document. Once the itinerary is changed, the ticket may be revalidated via SalesLink.

Tickets Eligible for Revalidation:

·           American and American Eagle® prime flights only

·           Change in flight number

·           Change in flight departure/arrival time

§    City pair and inventory must remain the same

·           Change of date

§    1st available flight as close to the original departure time as possible may fall on different date due to last flight in/first flight out, or reduction in frequency

Determining Length of Flight Time Change

The flight time change is determined by the length of delay to the new connecting flight and its overall effect on the total directional travel time which may be unacceptable to the customer, per the example:

1 AA3266L 27MAY Q CIDORD WK2 245P 400P HRS /DCAA*FISXZF /E

2 AA3661L 27MAY Q CIDORD*SC2 1115A 1230P HRS /DCAA*FISXZF /E

3 AA2610L 27MAY Q ORDTUS WK2 515P 657P HRS /DCAA*FISXZF /E

4 AA 712L 27MAY Q ORDTUS*SC2 713P 859P HRS /DCAA*FISXZF /E

·           Customer was leaving at 2:45pm and arriving at 6:57pm = Total travel time of 4  hrs  and 12 min

·           Now the customer is leaving at 11:15am and arriving at 8:59pm = Total travel time of 9hrs and 47 min.

Even though neither of the flights changed by greater than 4 hours, the total  directional  travel time was affected by more than 4 hours, which makes the ticket eligible for refund.

Schedule Change results in change of airport

There may be times when a customer is protected to/from an alternate airport when there are no other options to the customer's ticketed origin/destination. This automation process is designed to provide the customer with a confirmed reservation on another flight, instead of leaving them without any protection.

When this occurs, and the customer does not accept the provided protection, you may:

·           Offer an alternate flight to the same protection city (must be on AA Prime)

§    If the protection offered was booked on OA*/AA, the alternate flight must be booked as OA*/AA

·           Offer an alternate airport within a 300-mile radius from the original affected flight

·           Offer the customer a refund

300 Mile Radius

There may be times when a schedule change occurs that is unacceptable to the customer.  If there are no acceptable options to the customer’s original ticketed AA or AA*/JB origin/destination, agency may rebook to an alternate AA, AA*/JB, or JB Prime airport that is within a 300-mile radius of the affected ticketed city and within the same country.

Rebooking to an alternate airport is allowed  only  under the following conditions:

·           Service to the ticketed airport has been discontinued

·           The Schedule Change is greater than 1 hour (61+ min)

·           The Schedule Change creates an invalid connection

·           The Schedule Change creates an extended connection time that is greater than 4 hours (241+ minutes)

§    Please note that if there is a valid connection within the same origin/destination with an arrival time within 1 hour of the original ticketed schedule, 300-Mile Radius does not apply

·           The Schedule Change creates an involuntary overnight at a connection city

·           The Non-Stop flight changes to a connection and the new routing within a 300-mile radius offers a Non-stop

Rebooking guidelines:

·           If the customer has chosen an alternate airport, they may use that airport for their continuing or return journey – this option must occur at the time of the exchange

·           The new flight must be rescheduled for the  same ticketed date of travel,  but may be earlier or later than the original scheduled departure time

·           Book the same or lowest available inventory, same cabin, up to and including H inventory for the main cabin

·           If unable to book in the same cabin as originally ticketed, an alternate flight must be selected

·           Endorsement Box requirement –  SKCHG/300M

Flight changes from non-stop or through-flight to a connection

·           Follow the  ‘ Schedule Change is greater than 1 hour   guidelines

Schedule Change – Instant Upsell Handling Procedures

Use the procedures shown below for customers who purchased an Instant Upsell (IU) for their ticketed flights directly from American on aa.com.  The IU is issued as an EMD with a separate document number therefore it does not affect the ticket issued by the agency.  These upgrades are booked in either F, J, or W inventories and can be identified by the following SSRs in the PNR:

·           OTHS INSTANT UPSELL ANCILLARY EMD ISSUED 001xxxxxxxxxx

·           OTHS AGENCY RETAINS CONTROL OF TKT FOR REISSUES

When a Schedule Change occurs, automation will rebook the customers in the upgraded cabin when available. Agencies are responsible for handling Schedule Changes sent by AA to PNRs containing an IU. The following procedures apply:

When the customer accepts the Schedule Change as protected by AA:

·           Ticket  must  be reissued by agency as ticket cannot be revalidated

o     Agency is responsible for advising customer of the schedule change

o     Reissue the ticket in the upgraded inventory as accommodated by AA

o     Special Waiver Code Required :   SKCHG/IU

§    SKCHG/IU   must appear in the Endorsement Box of the new ticket or be subject to a debit memo

When the customer  does not accept  Schedule Change as protected by AA:

·           Schedule Change is 60 minutes or less

o     Offer another AA Prime flight, same origin/destination, same travel day, and maintaining same inventory of the Instant Upsell already purchased

§    If same Instant Upsell inventory is not available, you may downgrade to lower cabin in the applicable inventory for the ticketed fare

§    Note:  When downgraded, you may advise the customer to submit a refund request for the IU EMD number(s) via  AA Refunds  website

·           Waitlisting for Instant Upsell cabin is not applicable

o     If unable to book for the same day due to the scheduled flight times are not available, may book the first available flight the day before or day after, same origin/destination and maintaining same inventory of the Instant Upsell already purchased

o     Any changes outside the above guidelines would follow Schedule Change Guidelines for 60 minutes or less rebooking in the lower cabin in the applicable inventory for the ticketed fare

·           Schedule Change is greater than 1 hour (61+ minutes)

§    If same inventory is not available, you may downgrade to lower cabin in the applicable inventory for the ticketed fare, or lowest available inventory up to H for main cabin

o     May book within 24 hours of the original departure, or up to 7 days before or after the originally scheduled flight, maintaining same inventory of the Instant Upsell already purchased

o     May offer co-terminals for AA Prime flights only if the flight times are closer to the original schedule

o     Any changes outside the above guidelines would follow Schedule Change Guidelines for greater than 1 hour (61+ minutes) rebooking in the lower cabin in the applicable inventory for the ticketed fare, or lowest inventory up to H for main cabin

Endorsement Box Requirement for Instant Upsell:

o     Ticket  must  be reissued by agency as ticket cannot be revalidated

Co-Terminals/Multiple Airport Cities - AA Prime Flight Only

Customers who are traveling to/from a co-terminal location may be changed to an alternate co-terminal airport, if requested, for AA Prime or AA*/Codeshare segments only, provided the flights times are closer to the original schedule. The use of other airline prime flights  are  not allowed.

MCT Issues (Minimum Connecting Time)

On occasion, the minimum connecting time will change for a given city.  When this happens, a Schedule Change will not be processed, however, the itinerary will now reflect Invalid Minimum Connecting Time (MCT) – AA or AA* (any AA Codeshare) When this occurs on American, American Eagle®, or AA* (any AA Codeshare) Itineraries, may use the guidelines for  Schedule Change is greater than 1 hour

Also, when the schedule change results in an invalid connection and the  minimum connecting time can no longer be met,  may use the guidelines for  Schedule Change is greater than 1 hour

Refunds

When a customer requests a refund due to an unacceptable Schedule Change, the refund should be processed via your GDS.  For eligible tickets, the waiver code for a schedule change refund is:  SCRFND

Refer to  Travel Agency Refund Processing  for more information

Determine eligibility for refund below:

Schedule Change is 240min (4 hours) or less :

·           Refund is  NOT  allowed

·           Refundable fares with a cancellation fee – May refund to original form of payment (FOP)  minus the cancellation fee

Note: Valid Tickets originally issued prior to April 8,  2020  are eligible for refund if they had a schedule change of 60 minutes or more.

Schedule Change is greater than 4 hours (241+ minutes)

If the overall directional schedule change was 241 minutes or greater, you may:

·           Refund to Original Form of Payment – as long as customer was Holding Confirmed (HK) prior to the  change

Schedule Change results in the change from a Non-stop or Through-flight to a Connection

If the non-stop flight changes to a connecting flight, with no other similar non-stop alternatives, you may:

Schedule Change results in a Change to the Operating Carrier

For example, if the flight changes from AA*/IB operated to an AA*/BA operated flight, or from AA to AE (American to American Eagle), you may:

·            Refund to Original Form of Payment – as long as customer was Holding Confirmed (HK) prior to the  change

Note:  This does not include a change to the type of equipment

Schedule Change is due to an AA or AA*/Codeshare Reduction in Frequency (Day of Week), Suspension of Service, or withdrawal from a market

For example, if the ticketed flight changes from operating daily to operating 3 times a week, or if the schedule reduces from 3 days a week down to two, or a market suspension is introduced, or the flight is no longer operating due to withdrawal from the market, you may:

Schedule Change results in a change of airport

·           Refund to Original Form of Payment applies for change of airport for origin or destination – as long as customer was Holding Confirmed (HK) prior to the  change

·           Refund to Original Form of Payment applies for change of connection airport when change is greater than 241 minutes

A schedule change which results in an invalid connection due to the minimum connecting time (MCT) standard is no longer met

This type of schedule change is considered an illegal connection.  When invalid connections occur and there is no connecting flight on the same day that allows for a 4 hour or less change to their total directional travel time, you may:

A Schedule Change which results in a change of the ticketed cabin (downgrade)

For example, if the customer was ticketed for First Class and was downgraded to Business Class or was ticketed for Premium Economy and was changed to Main Cabin, you may:

o     This includes the  whole ticket  (no longer using the ticket)

·           Submit ticket(s) for partial refund adjustment post-travel for the affected downgraded segment

For Refund requests on  partial tickets , including just the downgraded segment, Travel Agent may process by:

·           ARC Agencies: submit ticket to American Airlines Refunds for downgrade refund

·           BSP Agencies: submit the Refund Application (RA) form through BSPLink, add downgrade information to the comments on the RA

Note:  If the passenger has accepted a compensation voucher at the airport for the downgrade or for the inconvenience of the downgrade and the passenger travels on that ticket (ticket is now  used ) and now the passenger is requesting  additional  compensation for the downgrade, please direct them to Customer Relations.

A Schedule Change which results in a cancelled flight (UN/WK status)  and  no replacement/protection flight was  provided

Note: This option does not apply when a replacement/protection flight is provided as part of the schedule change within the same or a subsequent transaction

Smithtown American Airlines Mechanic Who Smuggled $250K Worth Of Cocaine On Flight Gets Prison

An airplane mechanic from New York will spend nearly a decade behind bars for smuggling over 25 pounds of cocaine on an American Airlines plane.

Paul Belloisi.

aa modify trip

Long Island resident Paul Belloisi, age 56, of Smithtown, was sentenced to nine years in prison in Brooklyn federal court on Friday, Sept. 6, for possessing and importing cocaine.

Belloisi, a former mechanic for American Airlines, was arrested in February 2020 after US Customs and Border Protection discovered 10 bricks of cocaine in an electronics compartment beneath a plane arriving from Jamaica at Kennedy International Airport in Queens .

The cocaine – with a street value of more than $250,000 – was replaced with fake bricks and sprayed with a substance that glows when illuminated with a black light.

A short time later, agents watched as Belloisi drove up to the aircraft and got inside the electronics compartment. When they confronted him, they saw that his gloves glowed under the black light, proving that he had handled the bricks, prosecutors said.

Belloisi was also found to be carrying an empty tool bag, and the lining of his jacket had cutouts large enough to hold the bricks.

In May 2023, after a weeklong trial, a federal jury convicted him of all three counts of an indictment charging him with conspiring to possess and import cocaine, and importing cocaine.

“The defendant abused his insider position at JFK Airport to help smuggle more than 25 pounds of cocaine into the United States in a highly sensitive electronics compartment of an international aircraft,” said US Attorney Breon Peace.

“This conduct not only furthers the trafficking of drugs that harms our communities, but also poses a serious threat to the security of a vital border crossing in our district and our transportation infrastructure.

“Today’s sentence demonstrates that the government takes these threats very seriously, and those who work in trusted positions at our airports and in other critical industries must know that they face serious consequences for crimes of corruption.”

American Airlines (Re)Adds Free Award Changes for Certain AAdvantage Awards

JT Genter

As part of its switch to dynamic award pricing , American Airlines sunsetted a flyer-friendly policy: Free AAdvantage award changes. Going forward, all AAdvantage awards would be treated like the now-retired Web Special awards. This policy wasn't all bad though. AAdvantage members could still cancel awards and redeposit miles for free. But, travelers would have to book new awards each time they wanted to change or reprice an award.

Today, American Airlines is reversing course. On certain eligible AAdvantage awards, you'll now be able to change your award flights without having to cancel, refund, and rebook your flights. Here are the details of this policy change.

Who's Eligible To Make Free AAdvantage Award Changes

Not all AAdvantage awards are now eligible for changes. Instead, awards must meet all of the following criteria:

  • All flight segments must be on American Airlines.
  • Limited to domestic award flights only.
  • Only one passenger can be in the booking.
  • Awards must have been booked with a U.S. point of sale.
  • Only the AAdvantage account owner that originally booked the flight can make the change.

That's… a lot of restrictions. But, this is still better than before when no awards could be changed.

To be fair, American Airlines originally introduced similar restrictions when it originally added the ability for flyers to cancel and refund AAdvantage awards online. Then it expanded this ability over time. So, we can hope that American Airlines will similarly expand the ability to change AAdvantage awards online.

How To Change an AAdvantage Award

Assuming your award is eligible (see above section), here's how you can change your AAdvantage award. First, log into your AAdvantage account. Then, head to your My Trips page . Click “Select” for the award you want to change. Then, click the large blue “Change trip” button to start your change.

Screenshot of AAdvantage award booking before making a change

Next, check the box for “Yes, I want to change this flight” and confirm or change the route and departure date. Then click “Continue”.

Screenshot showing AAdvantage award change search options

For reference, American Airlines will show how many AAdvantage miles and how much you paid in taxes and fees for the original booking. Review the award search results and select the flight you'd rather take.

Screenshot showing AAdvantage award search results

On the next page, American Airlines will confirm your flight selection and show the price difference for the flight. In this case, American Airlines confirms it will refund 30,500 AAdvantage miles to my account after confirming this award change. Scroll down and click “Continue” to move to the next step.

Screenshot showing AAdvantage award change price change confirmation

The next page is pretty similar to the previous one — confirming your new flight details and the price difference. Presumably, this is where American Airlines would request payment if the taxes and fees increased on your new itinerary. Enter your email address for the receipt; agree to the terms and conditions, refund policy, and conditions of carriage; and then click “Submit change” to confirm your change.

Screenshot confirming new flight and price difference on an AAdvantage award change

If everything worked, you should receive a confirmation that your change is confirmed. For reference, American Airlines kept the same record locator but ticketed my new flight with a new ticket number.

Screenshot of AAdvantage award change confirmation page

Bottom Line

American Airlines just (re)added free award ticket changes for certain eligible awards. If your ticket is eligible, you'll be able to change and/or reprice awards online without having to go through the hassle of canceling and rebooking an award. That's a nice win for travelers as you won't have to check your credit card statement to make sure American Airlines refunds the taxes and fees on your canceled award.

The downside: Only certain awards are eligible for online changes. You'll need to be a solo passenger on a fully-domestic American Airlines award, purchased within the U.S., and have used your AAdvantage miles to book the award. Hopefully, American Airlines will quickly expand the ability to change more types of AAdvantage awards soon.

' data-src=

Did AA really charge on award ticket change and cancellation recently? I don’t see any fee in any change and cancellation now either.

Changing flight awards You can change an eligible trip online in just a few steps. While you may have to pay the difference, there are no change fees for award tickets.

Canceling flight awards and reinstating miles If your plans change and you no longer wish to travel, you can cancel your trip anytime on aa.com. We’ll reinstate your miles and refund eligible taxes and fees up to 1 year after the ticket issue date, but you have to cancel your trip before the first flight departs. If you cancel your trip on aa.com, your miles will be reinstated and your refund will be requested automatically in most cases. There is no fee to reinstate your miles.

Sam, AA was allowing people to cancel awards without fees but wasn’t permitting changes. Cancel/refund/make a new booking was the only path, which was quite complicated. That still exists for passengers whose tickets don’t meet the restrictions for this new policy allowing changes.
