Who are AC/DC?

The band was formed in Sydney, Australia, in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. The original line-up also included vocalist Dave Evans, bassist Larry Van Kriedt, and drummer Colin Burgess. However, this line-up changed shortly after their formation, with Bon Scott joining as the lead vocalist and Phil Rudd replacing Colin Burgess on drums.

AC/DC rose to prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s with their powerful, riff-driven rock anthems. Their music is characterised by Angus Young's electrifying guitar solos, Bon Scott's gritty vocals (later replaced by Brian Johnson after Scott's death in 1980), and their raw, no-nonsense approach to rock 'n' roll.

Some of AC/DC's most famous albums include Highway to Hell (1979), Back in Black (1980), Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1976), and The Razors Edge (1990). The band have sold hundreds of millions of albums worldwide.

AC/DC announce 21-date Power Up tour - and a new bass player

AC/DC's long-awaited return to the road has finally been confirmed

Angus Young onstage

AC/DC have announced a 10-city, 21-date European tour. The band, who returned to the stage at last year's Power Trip festival in California , will kick off the Power Up schedule at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on May 17, and wrap things up at the Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland, on August 17. The schedule includes two UK shows at London's Wembley Stadium on July 3 and 7. Full dates below.

Tickets go on sale at 10am local time on February 16.

The band have also confirmed the lineup for the tour, which will see Brian Johnson, Angus Young and Stevie Young joined by drummer Matt Laug, who deputised for Phil Rudd at Power Trip, and former Jane's Addiction bassist Chris Chaney, who'll be filling in for Cliff Williams. Williams initially retired from the band at the end of the Rock Or Bust tour in 2016, but returned for 2020's Power Up album.

Chaney was also a member of Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, and played at Wembley Stadium during the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert . A noted session and touring musician, he's also performed with Joe Satriani, Slash, Joe Cocker, Bryan Adams, Meat Loaf and many others.

AC/DC began teasing the tour last week by posting a mysterious video on their social media channels. The clip showed a flickering version of the band's lightning bolt logo, followed by the words 'ARE YOU READY', accompanied by the AC/DC song of the same name. Subsequent clips continued the countdown to today's announcement, while a clock did the same job on the band's official website.

No dates have yet been announced for North and South America, Asia or Australasia, although Brazilian sources claim that AC/DC have been approached to perform at this year's Rock In Rio event, which takes place in September.

Prior to Power Trip, the Aussie titans hadn't hit the road together since 2016. The new dates also mark the return to full-time action of frontman Brian Johnson, who was forced to abandon AC/DC's Rock Or Bust trek after developing hearing problems, and was replaced by  Guns N' Roses  singer Axl Rose for the remainder of the tour.

AC/DC Launches First Tour in 8 Years: Videos, Photos, Set List

AC/DC launched their European Power Up tour with a performance in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on May 17.

The European trek marks the legendary hard rock group’s first full tour since 2016, though they did perform at the Power Trip festival in 2023. AC/DC certainly got things started with a bang during the Germany gig, delivering a fiery set full of their most celebrated hits.

After a video introduction, the band began their set with "If You Want Blood (You've Got It)," an emphatic opener that got the crowd cheering. "Wonderful to see you all again!" frontman Brian Johnson declared as the tune came to an end. "Enjoy yourself, OK?” From there, AC/DC launched into "Back in Black," their iconic 1980 single that had the whole stadium shaking.

"Demon Fire" was next in the set, marking the first song of the night from AC/DC's most recent album, 2020's Power Up . Still, it was the classic material that fans wanted to hear the most -- and AC/DC was more than happy to oblige. "Thunderstruck," "You Shook Me All Night Long," "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" and "Highway to Hell" were just some of the many timeless tracks featured throughout the performance.

After rocking through 22 songs, the band departed the stage momentarily, only to return for a two-song encore of "T.N.T." and "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)." See videos and a full set list from the concert below.

Who Is Playing in AC/DC’s New Lineup?

AC/DC’s lineup for the Power Up tour is notably different than the one they used a Power Trip in 2023. Original lead guitarist Angus Young is still in the fold, as is longtime singer Johnson, who arrived in 1980 following the death of Bon Scott . Joining them is rhythm guitarist Stevie Young, who became part of AC/DC after Malcolm Young ’s death in 2017.

The band’s two newest additions are drummer Matt Laug and bassist Chris Chaney, the latter of whom is best known to rock fans for his time in Jane’s Addiction . The Germany gig was Chaney's first with AC/DC, having officially replaced Cliff Williams  -- who had been with the group more than 40 years -- earlier this year.

AC/DC’s European tour will run through the summer, with the final show scheduled to take place on Aug. 17 in Dublin, Ireland.

AC/DC review, Wembley: If this is what it is to be rocked, it sure feels like being drained

Few gigs may be louder, but the songs themselves are virtually inaudible – luckily the band compensate with their rolodex of major hits, article bookmarked.

Just like the neon wristbands that transform modern Coldplay shows into Jackson Pollock fever dreams , lighting up in the proximity of a chiming indie guitar riff, the devil-horn headpieces that pepper Wembley Stadium tonight seem programmed to start flashing as we approach the turn-off for the highway to hell.

They add to an already electric sense of anticipation. AC/DC ’s 2024 tour reaches London after almost 10 years away, a time during which fans wondered if the band would ever be back in any shade of black. Their Rock or Bust tour of 2015-16 ended up busting; flat-capped singer Brian Johnson , the only rock legend with the stage presence of a plumber, was forced off the road by hearing issues and replaced in the final leg by Axl Rose. During the hiatus that followed, the band appeared to disintegrate around the death in 2017 of guitarist Malcolm Young and the retirement of bassist Cliff Williams. That these 200-million-selling stalwarts of classic rock – or what remains of them – are back to finally tour 2020’s Power Up album , fit, healthy and ready to rock... well, we salute them.

The lights drop, the devil horns flash, and a cartoon roadster races across the big screens en route to the gig. But at the precise moment you might expect it to fly out of the back of the stage spewing flames from its exhaust, Johnson and his ageing schoolboy sidekick Angus Young – now resembling a man held back in year 4 for 60 years straight – simply stroll onto a stage ranked with Marshall stacks and kick into “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)” from 1979’s Highway to Hell .

For a band renowned for their large-scale stage gimmicks, from gigantic wrecking balls to full-size train carriages bursting from the backdrop, it’s a low-key entrance. Several iconic AC/DC props survive: the chiming church bell that descends from the rafters for “Hells Bells” and the Napoleonic array of cannons discharging on “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)” have been mainstays of the set since the early Eighties. But for the most part, the AC/DC of 2024 want the music to do the talking.

Tricky one. Because AC/DC’s music doesn’t talk so much as bawl relentlessly in your ear about rock, booze and Satan, along with plenty of thinly veiled sexual innuendo. They are not a band you turn to for sonic breadth, variety and subtlety. Tonight has just two settings: loud, sludgy classic rock, and loud, speedy classic rock. Johnson really doesn’t need to glance down at his crotch to hammer home the double entendre of “Stiff Upper Lip”, but he does. Minor seventh chords? Fuggedaboudit.

All of this is aggravated by the fact that both Johnson’s voice and Young’s quicksilver guitar work are buried in a mix muddier than last month’s Download Festival. Few gigs may be louder, but the songs themselves are virtually inaudible. The likes of “Shot in the Dark” and “Sin City” are lost beneath the swampy noise. “Have a Drink on Me” sounds like Johnson trying to order a round mid-bar fight. Mind you, AC/DC’s woker fans might appreciate the lyrical thrust of “Whole Lotta Rosie” being reduced to an indistinct whimper – their hellbound horndog blues rocker tribute to the bedroom talents of one particularly body-positive Melbourne groupie arrives more muffled than ever.

Thankfully, AC/DC compensate for their lack of clarity and pizzazz by dotting major hits evenly along the way. “Why don’t we pick up where we left off,” Johnson suggests as Young deploys the extinction-level power chords of “Back in Black” two songs in. A few tracks later, “Thunderstruck” hits, Young spilling out its operatic Arabian riffs while shrouded in virtual electricity on the screens, as if Thor had part-exchanged his hammer for a Gibson.

Towards the end of the main set, they unleash a pack of the big dogs: a dynamic “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”; the behemoth glam of “High Voltage”; an explosive “TNT”; and monster choruses like “You Shook Me All Night Long” and “Highway to Hell”. Sadly, though, their ferocious momentum dies yawning during a 20-minute Young guitar solo on “Let There Be Rock”: virtuosic, yes, but he milks it like Cravendale. If this is what it is to be rocked, it sure feels like being drained.

Just as there’ll always be a demand for concrete, bran flakes and election cycle xenophobia, AC/DC’s unfiltered and unrefined brand of crude Seventies proto-metal will always draw massive audiences seeking the hard rock source. They are, after all, the National Rock Grid from which all other heavy guitar bands syphon off their sound. You hope tonight was all just a sound-desk issue and that, beneath the bombast, the raw power of AC/DC isn’t fizzling out.

AC/DC Play Last Scheduled Show of 2024 Comeback Tour in Front of 82,000 Fans: Video + Setlist

The post AC/DC Play Last Scheduled Show of 2024 Comeback Tour in Front of 82,000 Fans: Video + Setlist appeared first on Consequence .

AC/DC closed out their 2024 comeback tour with a concert attended by over 82,000 people at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland.

The rock legends ran through a 21-song setlist, opening with a one-two punch of “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)” and “Back in Black.” The evening featured plenty of other hits spanning the band’s five-plus-decade career: “Thunderstruck,” “Hell’s Bells,” “High way to Hell,” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirty Cheap,” and “You Shook Me All Night Long,” among others.

The set also featured two cuts from the band’s 2020 album, Power Up (“Demon Fire” and “Shot in the Dark”), as well as some choice deep cuts from the discography such as “Riff Raff,” “Stiff Upper Lip,” “Shot Down in the Flames,” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Train.”

A truly explosive encore of “T.N.T.” and “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)” ended the evening and tour. For this run, classic members Angus Young (lead guitar) and Brian Johnson (vocals) were joined by rhythm guitarist Stevie Young and new touring members Chris Chaney (ex-Jane’s Addiction) on bass and Matt Laug on drums in place of classic members Cliff Williams and Phil Rudd, respectively.

The gig concludes the first AC/DC tour and extended set of dates with singer Brian Johnson since 2016. Eight years ago, Johnson was forced to step away from the “Rock or Bust Tour” due to hearing issues, and Guns N’ Roses singer Axl Rose famously stepped in to front AC/DC for two dozen shows.

Johnson’s returned to the stage with AC/DC came late last year with a one-off gig at the Power Trip festival in California. The UK/European tour announcement followed in February. It remains to be seen if a North American tour is in the works, but the fact that Johnson made it through the latest tour without any major problems is an encouraging sign.

Watch: AC/DC Plays Final Concert Of 'Power Up' Summer 2024 European Tour In Dublin

Legendary hard rockers AC/DC played the 24th and final concert of their "Power Up" European tour on Saturday, August 17 at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland.

The setlist for the show was as follows, according to Setlist.fm :

01. If You Want Blood (You've Got It) 02. Back In Black 03. Demon Fire 04. Shot Down In Flames 05. Thunderstruck 06. Have A Drink On Me 07. Hells Bells 08. Shot In The Dark 09. Stiff Upper Lip 10. Highway To Hell 11. Shoot To Thrill 12. Sin City 13. Rock 'N' Roll Train 14. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap 15. High Voltage 16. Riff Raff 17. You Shook Me All Night Long 18. Whole Lotta Rosie 19. Let There Be Rock

20. T.N.T. 21. For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)

Prior to this past weekend's concert, AC/DC last played Ireland in 2015 with a sold-out show in the Aviva Stadium.

The "Power Up" European tour marked AC/DC 's first with the band's new touring lineup consisting of singer Brian Johnson , guitarists Angus and Stevie Young , drummer Matt Laug and the latest addition to the group's touring lineup, bassist Chris Chaney .

The European tour was the first run of gigs since AC/DC 's return to the stage at last year's rock Power Trip festival in Indio, California.

AC/DC 's last tour took place in 2015 and 2016 and had a $180 million gross, with 2,310,061 sold tickets reported to the Pollstar box office.

Laug is an American drummer who has played with many bands/artists such as Alanis Morissette , Alice Cooper , SLASH'S SNAKEPIT and Vasco Rossi . Matt moved to Los Angeles after graduating from South Florence High School in 1986 and after attending college in L.A., Matt became a sought-after studio drummer.

In 2001, Laug supported AC/DC as part of SLASH'S SNAKEPIT on the North American and European legs of the "Stiff Upper Lip" tour.

In its announcement about Laug 's addition to the band's Power Trip lineup, AC/DC offered no explanation for the absence of the band's longtime drummer Phil Rudd , who rejoined AC/DC for the recording of the group's comeback album, "Power Up" , which came out in November 2020.

Rudd was ousted from AC/DC when he was sentenced to eight months of home detention by a New Zealand court in 2015 after pleading guilty to charges of threatening to kill and drug possession. He was replaced on the band's "Rock Or Bust" tour by Chris Slade , who had previously served as AC/DC 's drummer between 1989 and 1994, playing on the album "The Razor's Edge" .

Rudd , who appeared on all but three of AC/DC 's 18 previous studio albums, toured in support of his 2014 solo debut, "Head Job" . It was the release of that album that led indirectly to Rudd 's arrest, with the drummer allegedly so angry at a personal assistant over the way the record was promoted that he threatened to have the man and his daughter killed.

AC/DC postponed the last 10 dates of its spring 2016 North American trek after Johnson was advised to stop playing live or "risk total hearing loss." The band went on to complete the European and North American legs of its "Rock Or Bust" tour with GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose as a "guest vocalist." At the time, Johnson had been AC/DC 's singer for 36 years, ever since replacing the late Bon Scott in 1980 and making his debut on the classic "Back In Black" album.

To enable him to perform live with AC/DC again, the now-76-year-old Johnson worked with audio expert Stephen Ambrose , who said he could help resolve the singer's hearing problems.

Ambrose , who invented the wireless in-ear monitors that are widely used by touring artists today, claimed to have invented a new type of ear-bud that would allow Johnson to perform without causing further damage to his eardrums. After three years of experimenting and "miniaturizing" the equipment, Johnson previously said the technology could allow him to tour again.

Chaney is best known as the bassist of JANE'S ADDICTION and as a member of Alanis Morissette 's touring and recording band. Chaney was also a member of TAYLOR HAWKINS AND THE COATTAIL RIDERS and CAMP FREDDY , as well as being a prolific and versatile session musician, having played with artists including Joe Cocker , Shakira , Slash and Avril Lavigne to Sara Bareilles , Gavin Degraw , Cher , SHINEDOWN and Celine Dion . Chaney is also a founding member and partner in the all-star supergroup ROYAL MACHINES along with Dave Navarro ( JANE'S ADDICTION ), Mark McGrath ( SUGAR RAY ), Josh Freese ( FOO FIGHTERS ) and Billy Morrison ( BILLY IDOL ).

Bassist Cliff Williams announced his retirement at the end of AC/DC 's 2015-2016 "Rock Or Bust" tour, which also saw Johnson leaving. However, Williams — and Johnson — took part in the recording sessions that resulted in "Power Up" . Both of them were also part of the AC/DC lineup that performed at Power Trip .

During an October 2020 interview with Dean Delray 's "Let There Be Talk" podcast, Cliff was asked if Johnson 's departure from the road was what led to his desire to stop touring. Cliff responded: "It was before then. I spoke to Angus about it initially. I was at a point — and this is at the beginning of the 'Rock Or Bust' tour — that I just felt, for me, it was time to hang it up. I knew that I didn't wanna keep doing these two-year tours, and I didn't wanna hold them back, so I made them aware of the fact that this was gonna be my last go-round. It was a tough tour to finish. God bless Axl for coming in and helping us out, finish it up. He did a great job. And at the end of that, I was definitely — that was it for me. Done — just done. That compounded the whole thing."

According to Williams , he wanted to take part in the recording sessions for "Power Up" as a tribute to Angus 's late brother, founding AC/DC rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young , who died in 2017 from effects of dementia at age 64. Malcolm is credited as a writer on all 12 tracks on "Power Up" .

"If 'Back In Black' has [late AC/DC singer] Bon Scott all over it, for me, 'Power Up' has got Malcolm Young ," Cliff said. "This is for him. And it's the band that we played together with for 40-plus years. And I wanted to do that — I wanted to come back and do that.

"We did some rehearsals earlier [in 2020] before this darn COVID thing popped up, and we had great rehearsals," he continued. "The band was playing really well. So [they asked me], 'Do you wanna do a few shows? 'Sure'. A few shows. We were planning on doing that. Everyone goes home to their respective homes, and bang, we've been here ever since [because of the coronavirus-related shutdown]."

Cliff went on to confirm that his commitment to AC/DC was only for "a few" dates in support of "Power Up" .

"For both [my mental and physical] health," he said. "I definitely have some physical issues, which I won't bore you with the details of. But, yeah, it's tough. I'm very grateful for everything. It's been fantastic. But I just don't wanna do that anymore."

Williams previously revealed that a "terrible" bout with vertigo contributed to his 2016 retirement. He also admitted the return of both Johnson and drummer Phil Rudd convinced him to rejoin the group. "It was like the old band back together," he told Rolling Stone . "It was not like starting over again, but as close to the band that's been together for 40-plus years as we can possibly make it. I didn't want to miss that."

The follow-up to 2014's "Rock Or Bust" , "Power Up" was recorded over a six-week period in August and September 2018 at Warehouse Studios in Vancouver with producer Brendan O'Brien , who also worked 2008's "Black Ice" and "Rock Or Bust" .

Are AC/DC Retiring After 2024 Tour Dates?

ac dc tours 2024

Fans are wondering if AC/DC will retire after their 2024 tour . The legendary band has been around for decades, churning out hits and touring the globe, and even after all these years, they still haven’t officially announced any plans to call it quits. However, some band members inching closer to 80 and the idea of retirement has created a buzz.

The stubborn drive of AC/DC

Calling AC/DC “stubborn” might not capture the full picture. However, the band is fiercely dedicated to making music and touring. Despite the challenges they’ve faced, including the tragic loss of Malcolm Young and Brian Johnson’s hearing issues, the band has always found a way to bounce back.

Angus Young himself has stated that that he and Malcolm had enough riffs for several more albums even after the release of PWR/UP , suggesting that the creative well is far from dry. Thereby, another album is entirely possible.

Another AC/DC album?

The band has remained incredibly secretive about their plans, but fans know that they recorded PWR/UP between August 2018 and early 2019.

Pictures taken in Vancouver at the time show the band hard at work in the studio. The album’s release was pushed back due to a combination of factors, including working on Brian Johnson’s in-ear audio monitoring system, and, of course, the global pandemic that threw a wrench into everyone’s plans.

If there’s another album on the horizon, it might not include everyone from the current lineup. Cliff Williams dropped hints at retiring from touring, though he could still be involved in studio work.

Drumming duties in the studio might fall to Matt Laug or Chris Slade, especially considering Phil Rudd’s legal issues, which make it difficult for him to tour internationally. The recent sale of Rudd’s personal items, including his drum kits, further suggests he might not be returning to the studio.

Even if a new album is in the cards, touring is another story. Promoters have reportedly given AC/DC an open offer to tour for another two or three summers if they choose to. However, Brian Johnson will be pushing 80, making it unlikely he’ll be hitting the road again.

Pandemic disruption

The gap between PWR/UP and the 2024 tour can largely be blamed on the pandemic that halted plans. The pandemic delayed the album’s release and also halted any touring plans the band. AC/DC is back on the road but many are wondering if this is the last time we’ll see the legendary band on stage.

Is This the End?

The  PWR/UP tour might indeed turn into AC/DC’s swan song. They’ve surprised the fans before, but with the age of the band members and the challenges they’ve faced, it wouldn’t be shocking if they decided to make this tour their last outing.
