Celebrity Cruises has announced plans for three of its ships to return to Alaska for the 2023 summer season. Cruises will begin on May 3, 2023 and run through mid-September.

Every voyage will include scenic cruising through the Inside Passage, as well as the opportunity to learn more about the culture and history of the state — from the native Tlingit people to the gold rush days that brought adventurers and fortune seekers to Alaska.

Highlights of Celebrity’s 2023 Alaska season include:

  • Sailing roundtrip from Vancouver and passing through the Inside Passage twice,  Celebrity Eclipse  will offer seven-night itineraries to Hubbard Glacier, as well as visits to Juneau, Ketchikan, and either Sitka or Icy Strait Point.
  • Celebrity Solstice  will offer seven-night itineraries from Seattle and one nine-night voyage, and will be the only Celebrity vessel to visit Endicott Arm Fjord and Dawes Glacier. Other stops include Victoria, Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan.
  • The recently-renovated  Celebrity Millennium will offer the opportunity to see more of Alaska with seven-night, open-ended cruises between Vancouver and Seward — the gateway to northern Alaska. A multi-night Cruisetour can be added to these sailings to head deeper into the heart of Alaska, giving guests the change to get up close to the state’s tallest peak: Denali.

Adding a Cruisetour before or after a cruise provides passengers the chance to explore more of Alaska. Celebrity will be offering nine to 13-night Cruisetours in 2023, where guests will stay in first-class lodging, ride the Wilderness Express, and visit destinations such as Homer, Anchorage, and Fairbanks.

As is the case with every Celebrity ship now (except the Galápagos Islands ones), wifi, beverages, and gratuities are now included in the cruise fare.

Bookings for these 2023 Alaska sailings open to the general public on Thursday, October 14, 2021.

Cruising in Alaska

Is an Alaska cruise good for families?

Absolutely. With spectacular wildlife and dozens of thrilling, kid-friendly activities, Alaska is perfect for families. Kids will love spotting bears and whales, and the whole family can try sea kayaking, go zip lining, join guided hikes through the forest, and learn to drive a team of husky dogs. Here’s all you need to know about cruising in Alaska as a family.

Find out More

Can I add a land tour before or after my Alaska cruise?

With one of our 9- to 13-night Alaska Cruisetours, you can combine your seven-night Alaska cruise with an exciting land tour where you’ll visit destinations like cultured Anchorage, folksy Talkeetna, and wild Denali, giving you a more diverse experience of the magnificent 49th state and more opportunities to spot the Big Five: Moose, caribou, wolf, Dall sheep, and grizzly bear.

Will I see a glacier on my Alaska cruise?

Many of our itineraries spend a day cruising the beautiful Endicott Arm Fjord, the end of which is dominated by the mighty Dawes Glacier. Others take you to Hubbard Glacier, a vast wall of ice.

From Juneau, you can take an excursion to Mendenhall Glacier, where you can see fantastic views of the ice on a hike or join a kayak tour. From Seward, you could join a challenging hike to Exit Glacier, which flows slowly from the enormous Harding Icefield. Wherever you go in Alaska, you’ll see glaciers in the distance, high in the mountains, sometimes hanging dramatically over a wall of rock.

What should I pack for an Alaska cruise?

When you’re packing for an Alaska cruise, you’ll want to plan for any kind of weather, from hot sun to ethereal mist and rain showers—often in the same day. Layers, light waterproof jackets, good walking shoes, and a hat and gloves are the essentials; Alaska can be cold as well as warm and sunny.

Pack binoculars for spotting all that incredible wildlife, and camera lens or smartphone. You will also need sunblock and insect repellant. Remember swimwear for the ship; even if it’s cool outside, the Solarium on board is climate controlled and covered, so you can relax on a lounger in the warmth, and swim in the pool. Pack Evening Chic outfits for our dressier nights.

If you join activities like kayaking, all safety gear will be provided.

What are the best things to do in Alaska?

Alaska is all about exploring the Great Outdoors with family and friends, learning about US History and enjoying wildlife. There are hikes, kayaking, mountain biking, ziplining, and dog sledding for more energetic travelers.

For a less testing but equally thrilling experience, you could join a whale-watching tour, or take a helicopter or floatplane flightseeing trip, soaring over forests and glaciers. Alaska is brimming with history and culture, too. Explore the cultures of the Native Alaskans, and learn about the Klondike Gold Rush.

Make a point of trying the local cuisine in Alaska, which is famous for its seafood. You’ll find Alaskan salmon on every menu. King crab is delicious in a chowder, or with melted butter. Black cod and halibut are delicious and often served with fries; fish and chips is a popular dish in Alaska. You’ll also find seasonal berries on every menu, locally roasted coffee, and a wide assortment of craft beers.

What kind of animals can I see in Alaska?

You’ll likely see a wide variety of animals in Alaska. If you’re lucky, you can spot brown and black bears; the Spasski River Valley near Icy Strait Point is a great place for bear-spotting, as are the rivers around Ketchikan in July, peak salmon spawning season, when bears come to feast on the fish. For guaranteed bear viewing, head to the Fortress of the Bear near Sitka, which raises orphaned bears in a natural setting.

You’ll also see whales; the Inside Passage is a great place to spot humpbacks and orcas. Look out for bald eagles perched in the trees, steller sea lions spread out on rocks, and cute sea otters bobbing in the water. To search for the Big Five—grizzly bears, wolves, caribou, Dall sheep, and moose—extend your vacation with a Cruisetour and a visit to Denali National Park.

When's the best time to cruise to Alaska?

Alaska’s summer season begins in early May and extends until late September. There are compelling reasons to cruise to Alaska in any month of the summer, depending on whether you’re interested in maximizing your chances of spotting whales, seeing the Northern Lights, getting closer to glaciers, or traveling when there are fewer people around. See our blog post to learn more about the best time to cruise to Alaska.

What Celebrity ships sail to Alaska?

Celebrity Cruises has three ships operating different itineraries in Alaska. These include Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Solstice, and Celebrity Summit.

Where do Alaska cruises embark from?

Most of Celebrity’s Alaska cruises sail round-trip from either Vancouver or Seattle. You could also opt for a one-way cruise between Vancouver and Seward or Vancouver and Seattle. If you choose a Cruisetour, you could sail from Vancouver to Seward and then fly out of Anchorage after the tour. Other itineraries begin in Fairbanks and, after the land journey, sail south from Seward to Vancouver.

How long are Alaskan cruises?

Celebrity’s Alaskan cruises range from six to seven nights, but if you extend your voyage into a Cruisetour, the duration is nine to 13 nights. You could also consider extending your vacation with a night or two in either Vancouver or Seattle, depending on which itinerary you have chosen.

Day 4 – Skagway, Alaska

Travel back in time to the days of the Alaska gold rush in historic Skagway. Step into the shoes of the Klondike gold rushers, and learn the art of gold-panning. Dog lovers have an opportunity to learn about the Iditarod and watch a team of sled dogs in action as they run around the track during a demonstration. Then get ready for wet kisses and snuggles as you get up close and personal with the newest addition to the team, the new puppies. If relaxation and beauty are what you desire, the best way to see Skagway is aboard the White Pass Train. Sit back and relax as the vintage train winds its way through lush greens, rugged mountains, dramatic canyons, cascading waterfalls, and tunnels. You can opt for the long train ride, or follow my plan and do the sled dog excursion first, and then hop on the train for the remainder of its journey.

Day 5 – Icy Strait Point, Alaska

Icy Strait Point offers an authentic and immersive experience, allowing visitors to connect with the rich history of Alaska and explore the pristine wilderness of the region. For those who love spotting wildlife, book a whale-watching tour and witness humpback whales, orcas, seals, and otters playing in the water, as bald eagles circle overhead. Foodies will be in their element with a hands-on tasting session in Alaska’s Wildest Kitchen. And for the thrill ride seekers like myself, the Icy Strait Point ZipRider® is for you! The world’s longest zip line ride is a one-of-a-kind thrilling experience that you won’t want to miss. Take in the views as you journey to the top of Hoonah Mountain on a gondola ride. Then you’re off on a race to the bottom dropping 1330 ft., and soaring above the rainforest below at speeds exceeding 60 mph!

An up close image of Ariel on the zip rider next to a zoomed out picture with trees in the background.

Day 6 – Ketchikan, Alaska

Known as the “Salmon Capital of the World,” Ketchikan entices visitors with its charming waterfront, vibrant arts scene, and captivating outdoor adventures. The Best of Ketchikan by Land and Sea offers a tour of the coastline by boat, before stepping on land to explore an old cannery and native village. The Tongass Rainforest trail expedition takes tourists on a journey through the nation’s largest   national forest, Tongass Rainforest. Water lovers will love the Tatoosh Islands Wilderness Kayak Adventure. Spend two hours in a kayak paddling around the Tatoosh Islands while spotting bald eagles, harbor seals, and starfish.

Day 7 – Inside Passage (Cruising)

Get lost in the beauty of this coastal route. Relax on the ship while you take in the tapestry of snow-capped mountains, fjords, glaciers, lush forests, and abundant wildlife. This day is perfect for ship activities like wine tasting, treating yourself to a spa day, relaxing in the Persian Garden, taking a dip in the hot tub, or cozying up with a book and cocktail in one of the ship’s many lounges.

Day 8 – Vancouver, British Columbia

The cruise has come to an end with a morning arrival in British Columbia. Enjoy a last breakfast before departing.

The Millennium also caters to the cocktail and wine enthusiast, with menus offering a “diverse selection of classics, the latest trends, craft beers, and a wine selection that is unsurpassed.” Oenophiles will appreciate the ship’s robust wine program having won 100 Wine Spectator Awards of Excellence and 9 Best of Awards of Excellence – the most ever awarded in the cruise industry. Guests can partake in wine tastings and workshops, and can even craft their own wine with Blendtique Custom Crafted Wines. And for those who crave a good martini, visit the Martini Bar and order the martini flight. The ship’s flair bartenders will put on an eye-popping performance before serving you six miniature martinis.

Alsmez was awarded the badge 'Great Review'

We just returned from a fantastic 7-night Alaska cruise on the Celebrity Eclipse, and I wanted to take a moment and share my thoughts with my fellow Cruise Critics! This was our 6 th Celebrity cruise and our first since the restart, plus our first-ever trip to Alaska. Our last one was on Summit in 2019, and we were thrilled to be back on the S-class and exploring a new-to-us ship (previously sailed Equinox, Silhouette and Reflection). We're now in our mid-late 40s and have witnessed a lot of changes in X over the years since our first cruise in 2011 – some good, some bad – but nothing could detract from Alaska’s magnificence. Even with post-pandemic cutbacks, this was one of our favorite cruises to date. Here’s the skinny:

EMBARKATION: Smooth other than a long line at customs. We arrived at 11:30 (our pre-arranged “wellness check” arrival time) to find that no one cared about that pre-arrangement – it was a free-for-all. Customs took about an hour and a half, everything else took 15 mins or less, and we were on the ship by about 1:15. I was bummed that they cut the welcome champagne, but I do like the new practice of proceeding directly to your room to drop bags and get Seapass cards.

THE SHIP: Despite some age-related wear and tear, Eclipse is still a beautiful and elegant ship. We love exploring the vast array of artwork on S-class ships and were delighted to discover some beautiful pieces on Eclipse – maybe my favorite collection across the entire S-class fleet. Public areas were clean and tidy. She could use a refresh but I didn’t notice any issues that affected our cruise in any way. Crew was great across the board.

CABIN: Sunset Veranda 6315, port side of center. Our first SV but not our last – it was a great room and a perfect location for AK (though I might hesitate to book one in the Caribbean due to lack of shade). Beds were firm but reasonably comfortable, though my side sloped away from the middle, causing me to almost roll out a time or two. Pillows were too small and very limp – luckily, our lovely steward was able to track down two extra king-sized pillows for our use, which improved things dramatically. No sheers on the windows, but no other problems.

POOLS/OUTDOOR AREAS: It was pretty cold throughout our cruise so no one used the outdoor pools. The outdoor hot tubs were always taken when we walked by, though, and the Solarium was typically packed (frequently with children, even outside of family hours, which I find very annoying). The lawn and Sunset deck were definitely in use but not terribly busy – we spent quite a bit of time up there playing bags and enjoying the view from the bar when the wind/rain allowed.

FOOD/DRINK: I posted a separate, extensive review of all of the dining venues and bars we patronized onboard: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2942993-celebrity-eclipse-dining-review-may-28-2023-sailing To recap briefly, we’re not big on the MDR and ate mostly in specialty restaurants and the buffet. The buffet was actually better than I expected, but the post-pandemic cuts are noticeable elsewhere, even specialty restaurants (especially Murano). Liquor selection was fine but wine was ABYSMAL, another very obvious cutback.

ENTERTAINMENT/LECTURES: We loved having a naturalist on board, and Michaela did a great job educating us about whales (of which we saw many right off the ship!). We are professional classical musicians and were largely unimpressed by the entertainment, but that’s not unusual. The production shows ranged from odd but not terrible (Topper) to truly awful (Amade). There were a couple of small ensembles and soloists we enjoyed, but not much else. Trivia was fine, the comedian was good for a few laughs, and beyond that we just concentrated on Alaska!

CASINO/SHOPPING: We’re not really gamblers but we played video poker one afternoon – good way to lose $20 and an hour of your life. The casino seemed quieter than we’ve experienced on other cruises, probably due to the itinerary. Shops were also relatively quiet except during the big flash sales. Selection was similar to what we’ve seen on other S-class ships.

PORTS: Alaska is just amazing, period. We arranged our own excursions except for the Hubbard Glacier small boat expedition offered exclusively by Celebrity. This was pricey but TOTALLY worth it – we got vastly closer than the ship could and saw tons of calving. Incredible. Our excursions in Juneau (helicopter ride to a dog sled camp on Herbert Glacier) and Ketchikan (UTV off-roading to Mahoney Lake) were also fantastic. We went whale watching in ISP and that was a bit of a letdown, but it really depends on the day’s whale activity. I loved the itinerary overall but will probably look for a cruise that goes to Skagway and/or Glacier Bay (possibly a one-way from Anchorage) next time to explore some new areas. Also, after seeing the inside passage, I have no interest in a Seattle round-trip – Vancouver all the way! Stunning scenery as well as an opportunity to visit a really cool city.

DISEMBARKATION: Painless for the most part. We were in a later group (9:05) and just waited in the buffet until it was time to go. Luggage area was well marked and easy to navigate. There was a bit of a wait to hand in our customs cards, but once that was over we quickly got out of Canada Place (had to lug our suitcases up the exit ramp but that was FAR preferable to waiting for the single elevator), walked a couple of blocks to the rideshare pickup area and called a car. I think we were at the airport by 10:30 or so.

CONCLUSION: We remain fans of X and the S-class but I sincerely hope they take steps to remedy some of the issues caused by their cost saving measures, especially with respect to dining and wine. We’d happily sail Eclipse again, but we’re looking at the E-class for a change of pace for our next X cruise and also considering other lines that may offer a better dining experience.

Thank you for your comments here, and in your dining reviews. Although I have cruised to Alaska a couple of times, I enjoyed seeing your perspectives and ideas for shore excursions.

Also, I much appreciate your format - paragraphs with headings. Easy to read and this format would be a model for other posters, IMHO.

Thanks you for the informative review. 👍🏻

Glad that you enjoyed your first visit to our special state.

But just a quick comment regarding the embarkation sparkling wine.  I was on the Eclipse on a B2B2B2B this spring, leaving the ship on April 19th.  On all four of the turnaround days there was a tray with glasses of sparkling wine sitting on the Cafe al Bacio counter available to be picked up.  Generally the Cafe al Bacio folks kept four or five glasses on that tray.  People were free to just pick up a glass.  This practice has happened on other Celebrity ships as well.  Did you ask about the embarkation sparkling wine?

Interesting! I didn't ask, and as it happens we headed directly up the stairs to our room on 6 when we embarked and didn't even turn toward Bacio. The entryway was crowded with people asking about where their Seapasses were, etc., so we wanted to get out of there ASAP! I'll keep that in mind on our next sailing. They did have a group of staff members dancing on the gangway and shouting welcome as we walked in, however - cute if you're into that sort of thing but definitely not my style and IMO not really harmonious with X's "modern luxury" positioning.  🤷‍♀️

Norwegian Cruise Line vs. Royal Caribbean: Compare two popular big-ship cruise lines

Fran Golden

If you are considering a cruise with Royal Caribbean or Norwegian Cruise Line, you are looking for an active, big-ship cruise experience on some of the largest ships in the world.

These two companies focus on cruises for everyone — couples, seniors, families — with activities and "wow" attractions to match. Their ships are highly popular, particularly on Bahamas and Caribbean routes.

Let's compare Norwegian Cruise Line to Royal Caribbean to see what they have in common — and what they don't — so you can find the cruise that's right for you.

Size of ships

alaska cruises celebrity 2023

Both Norwegian and Royal Caribbean operate megaships of varying sizes — all floating resorts with onboard casinos, pools, live entertainment, elaborate spas, lively dance clubs and lots of bars.

While Royal Caribbean has several ships that carry fewer than 2,250 passengers, the bulk of its vessels carry 3,000 to 4,000 passengers; its five biggest ships — topped by Wonder of the Seas and Icon of the Seas — are the world's largest cruise ships and carry more than 5,400 guests. In fact, some of the ships are so big they're set up in a neighborhood layout, including a Boardwalk neighborhood that's patterned after Coney Island, featuring a high-diving show, carousel and hot dog stand. There's also a leafy Central Park neighborhood with thousands of live plants.

Norwegian Cruise Line ships range in size from about 1,900 passengers (quaint by megaship standards) to more than 4,100 passengers. The line is not trying to win the size war, but it offers plenty of excitement on board. The latest Norwegian ships are topped by multi-level go-kart racetracks that add vroom to the cruise experience.

Cabins and suites

alaska cruises celebrity 2023

Both cruise lines proudly offer a broad range of accommodations. Norwegian particularly shines in the area of creativity and innovation.

On top of the newest ships in the fleet is The Haven, a suite complex with a private restaurant, sundeck, pool and lounge — basically a separate boutique hotel on top of the ship. Guests in The Haven get privacy in upscale, contemporary surroundings when they want, but they also have access to all the fun activities elsewhere on board.

Norwegian also pays special attention to solo travelers. In The Studios, passengers traveling solo can book creatively designed inside cabins that are priced for one (a cruise rarity). They come with exclusive access to a shared lounge, so you can socialize with other solo travelers if you wish.

Elsewhere, family cabins are located near children's facilities, and spa cabins are positioned near the spa.

Royal Caribbean seeks to please all travelers with the largest selection of cabin types of any cruise line. The line has everything from tight and inexpensive inside cabins with virtual balconies (sea views delivered via LED screen) and solo staterooms on select ships to two-story loft suites.

Some suites have views of the high-diving show, while some standard-size cabins face the Royal Promenade, Boardwalk or Central Park neighborhoods of the ship. (You exchange ocean views for people-watching.) Royal has moved to match NCL by providing suite guests access to a private lounge, restaurant and sun deck on its newer ships.

Food and drink

alaska cruises celebrity 2023

When looking at Royal Caribbean's versus Norwegian's dining options, both lines have a lot of fee-based specialty restaurants that surpass what they offer in their complimentary venues. To some cruisers, these restaurants might seem to be a money grab, but foodies don't mind paying for the upgrade in meals.

Years ago, Norwegian developed what it calls "Freestyle Cruising," a model that sought to turn some cruise traditions — such as assigned tables in a large main dining room and formal night dress codes — on their heads. Instead, passengers eat when and where they want. However, in many cases, reservations are still required.

NCL goes all-out with choices; large ships, such as Norwegian Viva , offer more than two dozen dining experiences. You can eat for free in smaller dining rooms or the buffet or splurge, for instance, on steak , French , Brazilian and Asian fare. Norwegian pays particular attention to providing outdoor dining options.

For food included in the cruise fare, Royal Caribbean focuses much attention on its Windjammer Marketplace ( the buffet ) and main dining rooms; in the latter, you can opt for assigned tables or anytime dining. A shining point of the fee-based options on select ships is Jamie's Italian with British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. Fans also rave about the line's fancy Chef's Table experience, a multicourse affair with chef commentary on what you are tasting.

Kids activities

Knowing that parents appreciate some downtime, both cruise lines have well-established programs to keep your kids happy. You can have a massage at the spa, hit the casino or otherwise do grown-up things knowing that your children are in a camp-like program with youth counselors who are leading age-appropriate activities like arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, science experiments, game play or movie watching. There are also fun clubs for teens and tweens to call their own.

Royal Caribbean's Adventure Ocean program (for ages 3-12) offers an educational spin, featuring a chance for kids to become certified adventure scientists. There are also special programs for babies and toddlers, as well as older kids, ages 13 to 17.

Norwegian's Splash Academy (for kids ages 5-12) entertains with creative play, including a Circus School. Meanwhile, Entourage (for ages 13-17) keeps teens occupied with games, sports and parties in a hip club.

Onboard attractions

alaska cruises celebrity 2023

Both Royal Caribbean and Norwegian have developed their newest ships to be active floating playgrounds with supercharged indoor and outdoor activities for all ages. Royal is tops in its ability to push the envelope, but Norwegian is coming on strong.

All Royal Caribbean ships have rock-climbing walls and FlowRider simulators that allow passengers to surf and boogie board. The line's long roster of activity choices on its various ships includes ice skating rinks, carousels, zip lines, minigolf, laser tag, escape rooms, waterslides , simulated sky diving setups, a 10-story thrill slide called Ultimate Abyss , an amusement-park-like mechanical arm that lifts a London Eye-style pod high above the ships for views and other mind-blowing features. The larger the ship, the more onboard activities you'll find.

Norwegian's much-touted and very impressive attraction on its latest ships is a multi-story go-cart racetrack occupying a portion of the upper deck. The line also does virtual reality gaming well. Select ships have a Galaxy Pavilion full of exciting challenges and experiences.

The ships also offer Aqua Parks with exciting dual racing slides, full-size basketball courts, escape rooms, laser tag, minigolf, darts, bowling and ropes courses. New on ships in the line's 3,250-passenger Prima Class are pairs of 10-story freefall thrill slides billed as the fastest at sea.

Entertainment

alaska cruises celebrity 2023

Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean have a battle of sorts in terms of signing Broadway shows for onboard productions. Both cruise lines recruit talent from Broadway, London's West End and around the world to rehearse in their own studios in Florida and have large casts of performers on their ships. The shows are slightly shortened versions of what you would see on land.

Royal Caribbean's roster includes such popular shows as "Grease," "Hairspray" and "CATS" on its biggest ships. On Norwegian ships, you can catch productions of such popular Broadway shows as "Beetlejuice," "Six" and "Summer: The Donna Summer Musical," as well as the super-fun pub show "The Choir of Man."

But the entertainment options don't stop there. Select Royal Caribbean ships feature performance spaces you might not expect to find at sea. There are outdoor shows featuring acrobats and high divers at the line's AquaTheaters, and ice skating shows with professional skaters take place in its Studio B ice-skating rinks. High-tech shows, live music and dancing the night away are also popular onboard pastimes.

Norwegian features extra-fee, adults-only show productions themed on wine or prohibition cocktails and come with drinks. Comedy is part of the scene — Prima Class vessels even have improv clubs — and Norwegian's themed parties are particularly popular with the late-night crowd. Fun bars include the Skyy Ice Bar, where you wear a parka to enjoy vodka on ice. Select ships have a Cavern Club featuring a Beatles cover band, complete with shaggy hairdos.

While both lines offer a large selection of games and contests, Norwegian has floating, participatory versions of popular TV shows such as "Deal or No Deal" and "Press Your Luck."

Related: Which cruise ship activities should you book ahead of time?

Who is on board?

Norwegian's "Freestyle Cruising" is designed to be more contemporary and less traditional, and the crowd on board tends to embrace the carefree nature of the experience. The dress code is whatever you like — dress up for a date night or down for a casual meal in a pub.

On cruises from the U.S., the crowd is mostly from North America and represents all ages, from kids to seniors. Some adults stay up late partying in the dance club or trying their luck at Norwegian's award-winning casinos.

Royal Caribbean's crowd is a mix of international travelers and those from North America, including couples, families and singles from all walks of life. You'll find night owls on Royal, too, though the crowd is a tad more upscale than Norwegian. That's partly because Royal Caribbean ships have a higher percentage of lavish, pricey suites on board and attract people who have money to spend to book them.

Itineraries

Both Norwegian and Royal Caribbean position the bulk of their ships in North America, but also have ships sailing in destinations around the world.

Norwegian is the only cruise line with a ship — U.S.-flagged Pride of America — that sails year-round in the Hawaiian Islands. Norwegian focuses much attention, too, on the Caribbean, Bahamas, Alaska, New England and Canada, the Mexican Riviera and Bermuda. The line offers popular, affordable sailings in the Mediterranean and Greek Isles. Other destinations include Northern Europe, Africa, Australia and New Zealand and South America.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian ship

Likewise, Royal Caribbean puts much emphasis on North America — the Caribbean, Bahamas (including the line's own extravagant private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay ), Alaska, Canada and New England and the Mexican Riviera — but also sails several regions in Europe. Its ships also ply waters in other areas of the world, including Australia, New Zealand, China and Singapore.

Bottom line

Either of these cruise lines is a good choice for a first-time cruiser. Go with Royal Caribbean if you're looking for a slightly more upscale, traditional cruise ship atmosphere and Norwegian if you're seeking a contemporary take on casual cruising.
