1.42 billion vehicle miles were travelled on roads in Bristol, City of in 2023.

Whilst historically significant, the long term trends can be misleading in most cases due to the extraordinary circumstances observed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Vehicle miles travelled in Great Britain have had year-on-year growth in each year between 2011 and 2019. Following a sharp decline in 2020, traffic levels in 2021 and 2022 increased, but 2022 levels still remain lower than the 2016 levels. Therefore, to say traffic has fallen since 2016 would misconstrue as the overall decrease is entirely due to the decline in traffic levels observed during the pandemic.

Download data

Data disclaimer.

Traffic figures at the regional and national level are robust, and are reported as National Statistics. However, DfT’s traffic estimates for individual road links and small areas are less robust, as they are not always based on up-to-date counts made at these locations. Where other more up-to-date sources of traffic data are available (e.g. from local highways authorities), this may provide a more accurate estimate of traffic at these locations.

It is the responsibility of the user to decide which data are most appropriate for their purpose, and if DfT road link level traffic estimates are used, to make a note of the limitations in any published material.

Quality flags in data downloads

DfT’s road link level traffic estimates are calculated using a variety of methods, with some methods likely to produce more accurate estimates than others.

The data tables available to download here contain a column - estimation_method – showing the method used to estimate traffic for each location and year. Figures having an estimation method of “Counted” are likely to be more accurate than those marked as “Estimated”, and the latter should be used with caution.

  • Traffic monitoring

What do we do

We collect a wide range of data on transport movements across Bristol. This is crucial to allow the city to plan for the future and to assess the impacts of past investment in transport.

Why do we collect data?

We monitor many aspects of the city's transport to:

  • identify trends and develop models
  • assist with planning for the future
  • assess changes in behaviour
  • assess the impacts of new developments
  • help secure resources to improve the transport system in Bristol
  • measure progress towards achieving targets, especially for the Joint Local Transport Plan
  • fulfil statutory requirements in support of the Joint Local Transport Plan and as part of our responsibilities under the Traffic Management Act 2004.

What data do we collect?

We follow an annual monitoring programme, but also carry out data on an adhoc basis for specific projects.

The programme includes:

  • Cordon, river screenline and link counts which measure traffic flows in, out and across the city.
  • Pedestrian and cycle surveys
  • Surveys to measure the progress of Greater Bristol's Joint Local Transport Plan (JLTP).
  • Public transport surveys of Bus and Rail use.

Some of the survey sites have been monitored for many years.  These can provide useful information about seasonal and annual variations. Data is also used to help create models of transport flows throughout the city.

Data on road accidents and casualties are available from the Road Safety Team .

How do I request transport data?

You can look at traffic survey data on our maps system . Select a location to view the data. Most of the data is available at no charge.

Some of the data isn't available online. You'll need to use the contact details on the map to make a request for this data. We may charge an administration fee.

If your organisation has traffic count data for Bristol that you'd like us to include in our database, contact us at [email protected]

If you'd like to request other types of transport data, contact us at [email protected]

What types of data and collection methods are used?

Automatic counts.

There are several different types of automatic counter. The council currently uses either sub-surface loops or radar counters to carry out Automatic Traffic Counts (ATCs).

ATCs are generally used to measure:

  • Unclassified volumes of all vehicles including annual average daily traffic (AADT).
  • Vehicle speeds (it should be noted that these counters cannot be used for enforcement purposes as they do not record registration details).
  • Volume of cycles and pedestrians.

We have installed a number of permanent ATC sites around the city and also regularly put up temporary ATCs.  For example:

  • To monitor traffic at events.
  • To monitor the effects of changes to the road network.

Manual counts

These can be tailored to individual surveys. They are usually 12 hour surveys, but timings can be varied where necessary. Types of count include:

  • Manual Classified Counts (MCC), for example the volume of traffic classified by vehicle type.
  • Turning counts at junctions, or more detailed origin and destination surveys.
  • Queue length surveys.
  • Pedestrian and cycle usage surveys.
  • Private transport journey-time surveys.
  • Public transport journey-time and punctuality surveys.
  • Public transport passenger counts and user surveys.
  • Parking surveys

These manual counts can be conducted either on site by trained enumerators or collected by video survey.

Interviews and user surveys

This type of survey is sometimes needed to gather more detailed information about behaviour or feedback on services. Types of survey include:

  • Roadside interviews.
  • Public transport user surveys - onboard or at stations / stops.
  • Face to face interviews.
  • Postcard surveys.

When contacting us please provide as much information as possible about the data you require, as a minimum including specific locations, dates and type of information you require.

Bristol Airport’s sustainable efforts praised as summer travel peaks

Airport is investing in improving access to public transport

Bristol Airport has been praised by Bath’s MP as jet-setters head off on their summer holidays. Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for energy and climate change and MP for Bath, visited Bristol Airport to see how they cope with the up to 40,000 travellers who pass through the airport every day in peak summertime.

Airport CEO Dave Lees and his operations team gave Wera a guided tour of the airport, mingling with passengers as they went through the new screening facility, which simplifies security checks, speeding up the process.

Passing through a bustling duty free area, and grabbing a Mediterranean Vegetable Medley for lunch at The Cabin, one of Bristol’s eight airside restaurants, Wera then enjoyed the highlight of her tour - stepping out of the departure lounge and on to the tarmac.

Read More - Pedestrian fighting for life after Mercedes crash on M5 overbridge

This section of her visit started with a drive around the apron of the airfield to hear how the teams humanely manage the birdlife in the area to discourage habitation. With bird strikes remaining one of the greatest risks to aviation safety, this is a crucial activity.

Wera then got to drive behind a plane, chasing it down the runway - from a safe distance - as it took off. “It was amazing - I felt like I was in an action movie," said Wera afterwards. A trip up the airport’s control tower, newly refurbished at a cost of £4m - completed Wera’s visit.

bristol travel survey

Bristol Airport is the primary gateway for the South West of England and South Wales, serving more destinations and passengers than all other airports in these regions combined, 117 currently). It aims to continue to increase the breadth of destinations in the future including some destinations beyond Europe into the Middle East and the US.

As the Lib Dems spokesperson for climate change, energy and transport, Wera was interested to hear about Bristol Airport’s sustainability strategy and decarbonisation goals. An ambitious new sustainability strategy was unveiled in December 2023, with four key goals; to achieve net zero operations by 2030, to support zero emissions flight development, to enhance the local environment, and to support the community, and Wera learned more about these during her visit from CEO Dave Lees, head of sustainability Hannah Pollard and head of planning and growth Andrew Goodchild.

They told her about the airport’s commitment to investment in improving access to public transport, encouraging the use of electric vehicles, and enhancing cycling and walking routes to the airport.

Currently only 16% of travellers use public transport to get to the airport. It is hoped that a new transport interchange, currently under development and expected to open in 2025, will lead to easier, and therefore increased, public transport access to the terminal and result in far greater numbers using more sustainable ways of getting to the airport.

The airport also has onsite recycling targets, aiming for 65% this year, and owns Lulsgate Wood, 11 acres of adjacent woodland. It has a range of management and enhancement measures in place to support biodiversity, including the protection of horseshoe bats.

In the Lib Dem press release from Wera her office states: “The airport inspects air quality continuously using real-time monitors. The results are reported every year in the Annual Monitoring report. And the Airport’s 2024-2029 Noise Action Plan sets out how it will manage the noise arising from airport operations, including measures such as phasing out mobile diesel generators through fixed electric ground power units and mitigation measures during construction works, such as controls on hours of work.

“Significantly, the airport is working on the development of the airport’s hydrogen infrastructure with the aim of enabling commercial flights by 2035. As a founding member of the Hydrogen South West consortium and the only airport a part of the Hydrogen In Aviation (HIA) alliance, Bristol Airport is at the forefront of advancing hydrogen flight development. The HIA, featuring companies like Airbus and easyJet, released recommendations in March to accelerate hydrogen flight development.”

bristol travel survey

David Lees, CEO of Bristol Airport, said: “We are proud to lead the way in sustainable aviation and are committed to achieving our net zero operations target by 2030. Our initiatives, from improving public transport links to pioneering hydrogen technology, are designed to reduce our environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future for aviation. It was a pleasure to showcase our efforts to Wera and discuss how we can continue to innovate in this critical area.”

Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat MP for Bath, praised their commitment to sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint: “As we face the urgent challenge of climate change, it is crucial that the aviation industry takes a leading and responsible role in encouraging greener travel. I am pleased to learn of the initiatives being pursued here at Bristol Airport to prioritise decarbonisation to reach net zero by 2030 and enhance the surrounding environment. I urge all airports across the country to adopt similar sustainable strategies and solutions. In the meantime I wish everyone travelling this summer safe, happy and restorative holidays, wherever their destination.”

Is Bristol Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

Bristol, United Kingdom

United Kingdom : Safety by City

  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Northern Ireland
  • Peterborough
  • Southampton

Bristol is the self-proclaimed, unofficial capital of the West Country of England.

All the major festivals are held there during summer, so it’s the best time to visit.

There are so many green spaces in Bristol that are easily accessible from any area of the city and they free to use.

Bristol also offers easy access to history and art events and exhibitions all year round and there are many music venues and events, of all genres.

Bristolians are friendly and welcoming and there is a great sense of their shared past, they are proud of their heritage and a community spirit is to be found in many different parts of the city as a whole.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Bristol

OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM

Bristol is very safe, generally. Crime rates are low and the most common form of crime is petty theft and scams, so just use your common sense and your trip should go smoothly.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

Transportation is relatively safe and reliable in Bristol, but it is still recommended that you pay attention to public transportation and be on the lookout for pickpockets and bag snatchers.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: MEDIUM

There is some risk of encountering a pickpocket, especially in more touristy areas. Apply the basic laws of precaution to avoid such a situation, and follow your common sense.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: LOW

You can relax when it comes to natural disasters, because, apart from somewhat rainy weather, there are no natural disasters recorded in this city.

MUGGING RISK: LOW

Bristol is mostly safe when it comes to mugging and kidnapping, but it is recommended that you avoid poorly lit and deserted streets and dangerous areas known for occasional street crime.

TERRORISM RISK: HIGH

The United Kingdom has recently been targeted by terrorist attacks and it is now publicly announced that the threat to the UK is severe.

SCAMS RISK: LOW

As in any tourist destination, there is a risk of getting scammed. Check your change twice, negotiate everything in advance, never pay upfront, and be wary of people trying to distract your offering you unsolicited help with your luggage or anything else, as it might be a trick to steal from you. The most common scam is taxi drivers overcharging for rides.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

Bristol is mostly very safe for women to travel to. Just follow your basic common sense and general rules of things to avoid, and you should be fine.

  • So... How Safe Is Bristol Really?

If you follow basic precaution rules, Bristol can be a very safe city.

It is quite a small city, so there are far fewer gang-related crimes like you would find in London, Birmingham, and Manchester.

Of course, there are areas and occasions which during particular times, and when alone, can be somewhat spooky like St. Pauls, Shirehampton, Knowle or Eastville.

However, there are no particular no-go zones in Bristol.

There are wealthier areas, like Stoke Bishop and Clifton and poorer areas like Southmead and Hartcliffe, but they wouldn’t be described as dangerous.

Like all UK cities you will find crime if you look for it, and like anywhere else – always be mindful if walking alone at night when pubs and bars are closing.

Clifton and Redland on the upper west/central side have more burglaries than the rest of the city, as they are lots of large family homes there.

Another thing to watch out for is crossing the roads since every year tourists suffer from traffic accidents because the British people drive on the left side of the road which is highly confusing for people from around the world.

  • How Does Bristol Compare?
  • Useful Information

Member countries of the EU do not need visas to enter the United Kingdom, as well as some other countries, but there is a considerable number of countries that do. Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into the United Kingdom.

The British pound is the currency in Bristol. Keep in mind that this is one of the most expensive countries in Europe and the prices of accommodation in most cities in the country are skyrocketing. You should bear in mind that you will need about 100£ per day, including accommodation.

The weather in Bristol is mild with cool summers, and heavy rainfalls during the year. The best time to visit is during summer, from June to August.

The busiest airport in Briston is Bristol Airport. It is situated a few miles south-west of Bristol city center and offers direct services to over 125 destinations across Europe.

Travel Insurance

Just like anywhere else, we recommend getting travel insurance when traveling to Bristol, since it covers not only the costs of medical problems but also theft and loss of valuables.

6 Reviews on Bristol

Outraged myth related information... lazy.

A lot of this information is out of date and no data sources are quoted. Unfortunately myths on safe or unsafe parts of the city remain. Local crime statistics for areas highlighted as higher risk ‘poorer area’s are lower than central Bristol or wealthier areas. I comment from the perspective of living in both. Theft, violent crime and ASB are higher in those areas associated with wealth. Victims of crime are often inebriated, alone on unlit streets or flashing their iPhone 27 around… if you feel unsafe go into a shop and tell someone

Bristol wives matter

Bristol is an ace place to go for a great violent riot. It happens every month. Some folk even through a statue into the harbour because it demonstrated a heterosexual man. There are brilliant battles with the police when it gets dark and it is lovely to see ” rent a mob” on the news so often. I feel the years of inbreeding is now starting to take its toll, nowhere else is it acceptable to call your sister your wife.

I agree with you Hugh. The knuckle dragging yokels get pissed up on scrumpy and next thing is they are throwing their empties at the police. They think they are so tough and radical but really just a bunch of illiterate sheep bothered. Please avoid this Marxist hellhole.

Safer than most cities in the US enjoy the place.. the worst thing you worry about is the dull wet weather

This post by Bae is possibly the dullest I have ever read.

Having lived in Bristol for 10 years prior to moving to the US, I completely agree. There are no terrorist issues at all. I am not sure where that is even coming from. You can check the news. Most places in the UK that have issues are down to gang violence and stabbings which you will find in London, not Bristol!! I feel 1000% safe here even still when I visit.
