Carnival Cruise Lines - Dry Dock

Dry dock (also commonly drydock) Is typically a narrow basin that can be flooded to allow a ship to be floated in, then drained to allow that ship to come to rest on a dry platform. Dry docks are used for the construction, maintenance and repair of ships, boats and other watercraft. Dry docks are typically used in for major repairs and upgrades where it is easier to work on the watercraft while it is physically out of the water. Technological advancements have made use of floating dry docks an option now.

Dry Dock Schedule Last Updated: Sat Jan 27, 2024

Due to the ongoing issues with COVID there has not been a new dry dock schedule established at this time. Most ships during their extended downtime during COVID have had at least some minor upgrades and some have had major overhauls. Cruise Ship Refurbishment Schedule

CruiseMapper logo

This is CruiseMapper's cruise ship refurbishments schedule of dry-dock dates, news, and information on deck plan changes during vessel refits, regular maintenance and repairs, overhauls and renovation of small and big passenger cruise ships. Next links jump down directly to the cruise line refurbishment schedule of RCI-Royal Caribbean , CCL-Carnival , NCL-Norwegian , Princess , Celebrity , Holland America , P&O (UK-Australia) , Oceania , DCL-Disney , MSC , Costa , TUI-AIDA , Windstar , plus various small-ship and luxury brands .

Cruise ship refurbishment tends to be the best value-for-money strategy and highly successful policy for major cruise line companies in a time of worldwide economic uncertainty.

cruise ship refurbishments - CruiseMapper

For your convenience, this link goes directly to the list of all cruise line refurbishments 2018-2019-2020 schedule . To read more cruise ship technology news, please visit our engines-propulsion-fuel survey.

At CruiseMapper's list of new vessels under construction or on order , you'll also find an impressive number of passenger ships (river-, ocean- and cruiseferries ) being built/launched in the period 2015-2019. The majority of those joined the fleets owned by the world's biggest cruise companies - Carnival Corporation and RCCL-Royal Caribbean - via their subsidiaries/brands.

Cruise ship refurbishments, renovations, refits

Cruise ship drydocking (vessel refits and onboard refurbishments) is a multi-billion market with regularly scheduled vessel renovation projects every 2-3 years. Most drydocks are planned by the world's largest cruise shipowners - Carnival Corporation, RCG-Royal Caribbean Group, MSC Shipping Group, and NCLH-Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.

2019's drydock schedule featured the industry's largest (so far) vessel reconstruction project - Carnival Triumph's conversion into Carnival Sunrise . The 60-day project (at Navantia Shipyard in Cadiz Spain ) was budgeted ~USD 200 million. For comparison, Carnival Destiny-Sunshine conversion (2013) cost ~USD 155M. Navigator OTS ' drydock reconstruction (Jan-Feb 2019) was budgeted USD 115M. Also in 2019 were conducted the drydocks of the NCLH-owned Oceania (6 ships) with fleet refurb budget ~USD 100 million.

Cruiseship refurb and newbuild contractor companies

One of the industry's largest companies contracted for cruiseship and yacht interior outfitting (both of newbuilds and refitted boats) is De Wave Group (based in Genoa Italy). The company's cruiseship order book in 2022 was EUR 104 million. De Wave Group's latest projects included the newbuilds Seabourn Venture, Seabourn Pursuit, Discovery Princess (EUR 15M), Norwegian Prima (EUR 10M), Celebrity Beyond (EUR 9M/April 2021), as well as refit projects for Virgin's Resilient Lady (June 2021/EUR 40M), NCL (EUR 6M), Oceania's Marina and Riviera (~600 staterooms + public areas).

ALMACO Group is another major turnkey manufacturer serving the marine and offshore industries. The company designs, manufactures and installs staterooms (crew and passenger cabin units), galley/kitchen equipment, provision stores, cold freezer rooms, refrigeration machinery systems, laundry facilities, pantries, bars. ALMACO is also contracted for lifecycle services (scheduled maintenance works) and spare parts supply for passenger vessels (including cruiseferries), as well as for and expert engineering and project management. Among ALMACO's customers (multi-million projects) are Carnival Corporation, Saga Group UK, Ritz-Carlton Yachts, Swan Hellenic, VIKING LINE.

Why cruise ships are being refurbished?

Time is money - while a cruise ship overhaul takes 15-30-days, building a new liner (design to launch) takes ~3 years (depending on vessel size, specifications, special features, owner, budget, etc).

In comparison to cruise newbuilds' cost (especially of bigger units), ship refurbishments are a lot cheaper than building a new one. Due to the impact of the Coronavirus crisis and IMO's new maritime regulations, all major cruise shipping companies started to sell (and eventually replace) the fleet's oldest units to smaller travel operators.

In most cases, "refurbished" is synonymous with "maintenance and repairs", "freshened up" and "overhauled". Works include engineering/machinery updates, hull cleaning-painting, new furniture and decors (sometimes only changing the color schemes), new carpets, smart HDTVs (interactive systems), shipwide Wi-Fi coverage and faster satellite Internet, replacing handrails and glass, upgrades of venues (sometimes creating new lounge areas or expanding old ones), new amenities and services, etc. This would cost the company between US$10-30 million per ship. Some refits may cost up to US$50M.

Drydock refit projects for older vessels always include installing low-water usage toilets (urinals and fixtures), energy-efficient LED lighting (inside and outside), energy-efficient windows, HVAC system (heat-ventilation-air conditioning), hull coating (to reduce the boat's resistance through water).

What the list of cruise ship renovations generally includes?

Major cruise ship overhauls may include reconstructing or adding new cabins, lounges, restaurants, a SPA facility, swimming pool(s), sometimes adding a whole new deck, and even better - a whole midsection, like the case of MS Enchantment of the Seas refurbishment / lengthening in 2005 (next photo and the YouTube video below).

Enchantment Of The Seas drydock refurbishment / lengthening

Some technical enhancements, like a new external coating or an updated propulsion, for example, could significantly reduce fuel consumption (improving the ship's efficiency and environmental performance), while "most fun" modern time gadgets and contraptions attract huge crowds - like virtual "real-time" windows in all Inside cabins, or a water park with a slide, or a kids-only area, or a hugely-huge movie screen by the main pool.

Cruise ship refurbishment news are some of the "most wanted" and extremely popular on all major online travel forums. All big lines put their liners into dry dock every few years to update (or upgrade) them - it costs money, but again - it's cheaper than going on newbuilds. It's a fact that many travelers are hesitant to take the first sailing post-drydock.

Most dry-docks are routine - just refreshing, do not include major changes and have a fairly accurate schedule. A major refit, on the other hand, usually involves significant changes in construction (or services) and have an "unpleasant" tendency to start prior to the actual drydock (even during the sailing prior) and often continues into the first sailing after.

The next YouTube video shows the timelapse of the MS Braemar 's drydock extension at the Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg Germany .

Cruise ship refurbishment jobs

Cruise ship refurbishment jobs are another issue. In 2009 Saga Holidays (UK company) refitted and refurbished its newly purchased Saga Pearl 2 ship (former name ms Astoria) spending 20 million pounds on this project and providing more than 300 jobs over a 3-month period.

The next video is about the April 2016 drydock refurb of Splendour OTS (now Marella Discovery) done in Freeport Bahamas.

Often vessels' need unscheduled repairs - not matching with planned maintenance schedules. In such cases are used teams of underwater specialists for fast, high-quality repairs, thus avoiding potential loss of income due to drydocking. The world's first global underwater ship repair service provider is Wartsila which provides any marine services and maintenance works, regardless of the ship's current location.

In 2017, Wartsila (Finnish marine corporation) acquired Trident BV (a global provider of commercial diving services) Via Trident, Wartsila offers worldwide underwater repairs, propulsion systems overhaul, regular maintenance works (hull cleaning, propeller polishing, welding), scrubber-cleaning and retrofitting, even major underwater overhauls. Corporation's main underwater teams are in Holland, Italy, and the Canaries. They can be dispatched to any location in a matter of hours, providing fast-response vessel inspections, repairs, refurbishments, equipment installation/replacement.

RCI's "Royal Advantage" renovation program (2011-2016) was budgeted US$300 million. RCI's 6-ship refurbishment project "innovation renovations" was implemented in 2016. The vessels Adventure, Empress, Jewel, Liberty, Majesty, and Radiance received some of the company's most popular shipboard features.

In mid-March 2018, Royal Caribbean announced a USD 1 billion fleetwide refurbishment project ("Royal Amplified", 2018-2022) covering 10 liners in 3 classes (Oasis, Freedom, Voyager). By this program were introduced new and innovative features/technologies, experiences and amenities, pool deck areas and venues, dining options, nightlife concepts, onboard attractions.

RCI drydocks are usually conducted at the shipyards in Freeport (Grand Bahama), Singapore, and Cadiz (Navantia's shipyard in Puerto Real). RCI ships usually enter drydocks in up to 5-year periods. For details see the RCI's link.

Next are listed only RCI's recent dry docking, the majority of which are for general maintenance works and technical overhauls.

Princess Cruises drydock refurbishments

P&o cruises (australia and uk) drydock refurbishments, hal-holland america line drydock refurbishments.

In 2003-2008, by the SOE ("Signature of Excellence") program, HAL upgraded all older vessels, on which were also added new venues, stateroom categories, and amenities. In November 2015 was announced company's USD 300 million fleetwide renovation program, including Suite cabin improvements (new decors, furnishings, amenities, services) for all suite categories on Vista-Class, Signature-Class and R-Class vessels.

In 2018, HAL contracted ABB Group (Swedish-Swiss corporation specializing in robotics, marine power, and propulsion equipment) for installing shore-power systems fleetwide. The technology allows docked in ports cruise ships to receive shoreside power supply (from the city's grid) and turn off their engines, thus reducing to zero emissions and noise. ABB installed its shore-power equipment on 11x HAL ships. Switchover (ship-to-shore power) at seaports takes around 20 min.

In 2023, HAL conducted 5 refurbishment projects to expand the casino space on its vessels in the Pinnacle-class (Nieuw Rotterdam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam) and Signature-class (Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam). Each of the enlarged gambling facilities now has 140 of the gaming industry's newest slot and video poker machines. In addition, a separate non-smoking area was added in the casinos of Nieuw Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam and Koningsdam.

Celebrity Cruises drydock refurbishments

In July 2018, the company announced a USD 500 million fleet modernization (drydock refurbishment) program dubbed "Celebrity Revolution".

The 4-year fleet refurbishment project was conducted in the period February 2019-2023.

The next table lists all ship drydocks by the Celebrity Revolution project, as well as drydocking projects for regularly scheduled maintenance works.

As a result, the fleet was expanded with 1368 new staterooms (342 per boat), and all shipboard restaurants, bars, and lounges were redesigned and redecorated.

  • New public spaces include a redesigned Lobby with Reception Hall (lower level) and Upper Hall (2nd level) connected via Grand Staircase (decorated with railings and balustrades) and featuring a large crystal chandelier (with hanging pieces of hand-painted glass).
  • Grand Dining Room (Deck 5 aft) received new premium furniture (leather chairs with metallic bronze threading) and new crystal chandeliers.
  • Martinis (piano bar lounge on Deck 5) was redesigned, new silver-white marble bar top and walnut paneling were added.
  • All staterooms were completely overhauled (redesigned and refurnished) and upgraded with custom-made furniture, polished wood, stone finishes, designer accessories, smart HDTVs, USB ports, LED lighting. All cabin bathrooms were overhauled and received new tiling, surfaces, fixtures, designer accessories, vanities glass shower enclosures. Penthouse-Vista-Owner suites' bathrooms were enlarged and upgraded with Carrara marble tops, onyx, polished granite.

Works on the fleetwide refurb project involved 1000+ artisans and craftsmen and resulted in 1368 new cabins, 8000 new light fixtures, 12000 new sofas and chairs.

Disney Cruise Line drydock refurbishments

Msc cruises ships lengthening and drydock refurbishments.

MSC Cruises announced in late December 2013 the start of the EUR 200 refurbishment program (named "renaissance") involving not only the revitalization of all Lirica-class vessels but also stretching all four of them in the period 2014-2016 (a total of 38 drydock weeks).

ZOE speaks 7 languages, answers cruise-related questions, provides info on shipboard services-activities-facilities, makes reservations-bookings.

Costa Cruises drydock refurbishments

Besides the ship's staff and crew, Costa cruise passengers are also served by Peper robots - the latest cyborg technology implemented fleetwide in 2016. These humanoid robots greet and guide passengers upon embarkation, and also assist them throughout the voyage with information and tips. Pepper robots are mobile and communicate in 3 languages (English, German, Italian).

TUI and AIDA Cruises drydock refurbishments

Besides the ship's staff and crew, AIDA passengers are also served by Peper robots - the latest cyborg technology implemented fleetwide in 2016. These humanoid robots greet and guide passengers upon embarkation, and also assist them throughout the voyage with information and tips. Pepper robots are mobile and communicate in 3 languages (English, German, Italian).

Windstar Cruises refurbishments

On November 15, 2018, Windstar announced the "Star Plus Initiative" - drydock fleet renovation program budgeted USD 250 million. The project includes enlarging (stretching) and engine changes for fleet's three Star-Class mega-yachts Star Breeze , Star Legend , Star Pride .

The project resulted in bigger passenger capacity, adding new staterooms, venues, public spaces, new and more efficient engines. Each ship's capacity was increased by 68% (from 212 to 312 passengers). The drydocks were scheduled for the period October 2019 through November 2020, at Fincantieri's shipyard in Palermo Sicily.

The Star Plus project increased Windstar fleet's capacity by 24%. Star Plus was partially financed through the Export Credit facility guaranteed by SACE Italy (financial and insurance products and services).

The drydock lengthening included cutting each vessel in two and installing a new/prefabricated midship section with length 25,6 m (84 ft). Vessel's LOA length was increased from 135 to 161 m (443 to 528 ft). The midship section has an additional elevator.

Following drydock, each ship now has 2x new dining venues, new shop, new retail space; enlarged Gym, new Spa, larger swimming pool, new tender loading area (midship), 2x new tender boats (90-seats each), expanded and upgraded staff-crew areas and cabins. The two new dining venues are an alternative Spanish specialty restaurant ("Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso") and a casual BBQ space (adjacent to Star Bar).

The old diesel engines (7 per ship) were replaced with 4 new engines running on ULSD (ultra-low sulfur diesel) fuel, thus reducing SO emissions. Each ship received 50 new cabins (to 156 total), which (based on the total investment) meant shipbuilding cost per berth USD 267,000. Among the new cabins are two larger Owner Suites. All existing staterooms were completely refurbished, including their bathrooms, balconies, sliding doors. The new public spaces and cabins were designed by the NYC-based "The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry".

Windstar sailships refurbishments 2024-2025-2026

On December 6, 2023, Windstar started a multi-million refurbishment project to extensively redesign and update the fleet's three sailing ships (Wind Star, Wind Spirit, Wind Surf). Each ship is refurbished in two phases, starting with Wind Star (2025 & 2026), follows Wind Spirit (2025/complete) and Wind Surf (2024 & 2026).

By this project will be fully redesigned all public areas and venues (changing layouts, furniture, wall coverings and flooring, lighting, artworks). All passenger staterooms will be fully refurbished (interiors, furniture, smart TVs).

Among the remodeled/redesinged areas are the Lobby (expanded reception area, more seating and retail space), Bar Lounge (furniture, finishes, lighting), updated evening entertainment), Wellness Complex (The World Spa by Windstar & Fitness Center/new color palettes, finishes, gym equipment), Pool Deck (expansion by removing the SkyLight, new swimming pool and Jacuzzi, larger Pool Bar, new poolside furniture/sofas, poufs, ottoman beds, deckchairs, outdoor lighting, speakers, greenery).

The sailships' technology updates/upgrades include larger smart TVs in all staterooms (with interactive content and on-demand movies) and new WiFi points (with access to Starlink Internet).

Carnival Miracle to Drydock; Radiance to Take Over October and November Cruises

  • May 26, 2022

carnival cruise dry dock schedule 2022

Carnival Cruise Line is making adjustments to its West Coast operations in October and November.

According to a statement sent to guests recently, the Carnival Radiance will temporarily take over some of the Carnival Miracle’s itineraries in October and November as the Spirit-class vessel heads into drydock.

As a result, all cruises onboard the Radiance set to depart between Oct. 17, 2022, and Oct. 28, 2022 have been cancelled.

It was also necessary to cancel the Carnival Miracle’s Nov. 3 and Nov. 8 sailings, Carnival informed.

Both vessels were set to based in Long Beach, with the Radiance offering short cruises to Baja Mexico and the Miracle sailing varied itineraries to the Mexican Riviera and Hawaii.

“We are sorry that your reservation has been cancelled and apologize for the disappointment caused. If you are flexible with your dates, we are confident you will find another Carnival cruise that is filled with an equal amount of FUN,” the company said in the letter.

Affected guests have the option of rescheduling their bookings or receiving a full refund of their cruise fare and any pre-purchased items.

Passengers choosing the first option will have their cruise rate protected for bookings of comparable duration in similar accommodation, Carnival said, and will also receive a $50 onboard credit per stateroom.

In a different statement, the company also informed booked guests of the shortening of Radiance’s Oct. 14 sailing, which will now operate as a two-day cruise.

The sailing was cut short by one day to accommodate a 14-day cruise to Hawaii that was previously set to be offered by the Carnival Miracle and departs on Oct. 16.

Guests who chose to stay booked for the two-day cruise will be offered a one-day pro-rated refund of their cruise fare and also a $50 onboard credit per stateroom.

Pre-paid gratuities and pre-purchased beverage and Wi-Fi packages will also be adjusted to reflect the shortened cruise duration, with refunds being issued to the original form of payment.

According to John Heald, Carnival’s ambassador, the sailings transferred from the Miracle to the Radiance include cruises departing on Oct. 16, Oct. 30, and Nov. 13.

Carnival swapped ships and canceled cruises later this year. Here is how it will be:

Carnival Miracle > Now to be in dry dock from in October and November

Carnival Radiance > All 3+4 day cruises (Long Beach) from October 17 to October 28 canceled

Carnival Miracle > November 3 + 8, 2022 canceled

Carnival Radiance > October 14, 2022 shortened to 2 day

Miracle's cruise from October 16 through November 14 moved to Radiance

This includes the 14 Day Hawaii

This has me wondering what ship they will put in AUS? They updated Carnival AUS site to say that a new ship will be named soon and they will accommodate stateroom transfers the best they can. From Spirit to Miracle would be a seamless transfer.

No more Miracle itineraries from the west coast after early Oct either.

Interesting development.

The Miracle dry dock will certainly be a long one.

October 16th 2022 to November 16th, 2022

Confused by something here.  Miracle is supposed to be in Dry Dock till November 16th, with Radiance taking over Miracle's sailings, but Radiance sailings have been cancelled till October 28th only.  Which ship takes over Radiance's current November sailings?

Wondering if something is wrong with the Miracle since it being put in dry dock in October. I heard the ship lost all power last week. and there have been rumors the stabilizers not working properly?

The Radiance is taking over only a few of the Miracle's itineraries - the rest are outright cancelled.  Per JH, the motivation was to cover the (Miracle's) 14-day Hawaii cruise, which takes place the second half of October.  I'm guessing poor bookings contributed to the timing -- October cruises were sub-$100 with the recent sale, and recent reviews have weekend Radiance sailings at 2/3 capacity (a few cruises were fuller, this holiday weekend is sold out) and weekday even less.  The Miracle is doing San Francisco now, but when it met up with our Panorama cruise in February at Cabo, we were told there were maybe a couple hundred people onboard (in comparison, there were 3300 people on the Panorama).  Ouch.

We were on Miracle the end of October and are booked again in June.  We didn't notice anything necessarily wrong with the ship, but she is looking old/outdated.  It seems like Oct/Nov are slow travel times and a good time for Miracle to get some upgrades and the new paint job.

And then likely sent to Australia!

You are  correct, Miracle has stabilization problems along with other  mechanical and refurbishing needs . We sailed to and back from Hawaii in Feb. and Mar.this year. In 2018 the Miracle went dead in the water for about an hour off the west coast on our way back from Alaska. The complete round trip was the roughest I have experienced in 18 years of cruising ( have had periods of rough seas in the Caribbean).

Miracle just stopped moving? Did they say anything about it? (Captain)

JH indicated its a general drydock that has been pushed forward, and has nothing to do with stabilization or any other mechanical issues.  I have absolutely no idea when the Miracle's scheduled dry dock was, but it's entirely feasible that bookings are projected to be slow this fall (as mentioned earlier, for last week's sale, cruises from Labor Day - mid-November were selling from less than $100 on the Radiance and Miracle) and Carnival opted to move the dry dock forward, thinking it could generate far more revenue during its scheduled dry drock.

I doubt it, Australia will be a bust until the pre-flight testing to reenter the USA goes away. Not many are willing to risk getting stuck quarantining overseas. Those that are retired and buy a nice trip insurance policy that covers it maybe, everyone else not so much. Australian and European cruises are dirt cheap because so many don't want to deal with the hassle.

Airfares are also sky high right now and through the end of the year. They don't mind flying empty planes and are guaranteed tax payer bailouts and don't have to worry about making money either, unlike the cruise lines.

Carnival AU says new ship coming soon. Miracle gets pushed up dry dock. LA already has the Panorama and Radiance. Yes I am speculating, but the writing is on the wall.

The Carnival-branded Australia cruises are a budget option to P&O, targeted primarily at Australians, not Americans; the price of airfare is completely irrelevant (and subsidies to airlines ended awhile ago).  This is no different than how Carnival Corp. has operated Costa-branded cruises from Florida in the past... sure, there's going to be Europeans on the ship, but the target market (when the ship was in Florida) is US point of sale.

Carnival has had 3-4 ships (seasonally) based out of Los Angeles (sometimes including San Diego) for years.  Granted, the Panorama and Radiance provide more capacity than probably all 4 of those ships combined, but Carnival would be relinquishing the Hawaii cruises, overnight Cabo, etc. that have been popular from LA.

They best leave Miracle in LA. We just booked a Nov 2023 B2B in a 4th deck Vista Suite & connected Extended Aft Balcony.  ‘Hope they don’t muck that up. I’ll be quite PO’d if that happens.

On the flip side, my husband doesn’t drink, but does like nice coffee, seltzer waters, juices, and milkshakes. After much debate on lugging bottles of wine and budget for cocktails, we finally opted for Cheers (using 10% off AARP gift cards to save a little).  We didn’t regret it.    Our favorite spots were Alchemy, the atrium, and Red Frog. Great drinks and bartenders- Dusan and Zoltan in Alchemy, Elizabeth in Red Frog who has been with Carnival 26 years now, and Zofia in the Atrium were all great. And working their tails off. They couldn’t keep up. They would have one bartender when they needed two or three at peak times. And no waiters roaming to serve seating which hit the bar even harder with everyone walking up and impatiently wanting drinks.    I saw one young bartender cry at one point. They all look exhausted. Outside the venues I mentioned, it was a sling drinks as fast as you can and the heck with quality..they didn’t have time. One told me he had worked a 17 hour day. Another said he was being asked to extend his contract and shorten vacation. Two more said last contract and they won’t be back. This staff shortage is killing them. They are tired and stressed. I actually poured out several pool bar drinks they were so bad - I was glad I had cheers. This was an packed cruise with lots of college graduation parties so the bars were slammed on top of being short staffed. Having been a bartender myself it was hard for me to watch them struggle so much. Dirty glasses piled up, Bars not wiped down, recipes not followed, wrong drinks served…many seemed defeated and were beyond caring about customer service. They were too busy to provide it even if they wanted to.      One other note, I looked forward to the Havana bar and Latin snacks. Half the bar was closed for the cruise and they were out of many ingredients for the menu drinks. Snacks are no longer served there. You could see where they once had live music there but no more. It was a little sad to see such a beautiful space not being used.  They were also not serving coffee in the mornings and later often didn’t know how to make the Cuban coffees there. The main deck 5 coffee bar was great, though.    We still had a great time with drinks and fun, but felt really bad for the struggling staff with nowhere near enough people.

What is the AARP   gift c ard s?

Then tell me why tugs had to maneuver the Miracle into to and  out of Ensenada and into Long Beach. The ship has mechanical problems.

San Diego native here. Carnival has never had a ship here for any period of time, seasonal or otherwise. We were supposed to get Miracle for some summer cruises but then covid happened and that killed it.

Beyond that, the last Carnival ship to stop here was on accident because of engine problems.

But Long Beach always had Inspiration and Imagination. Then they had Splendor for Mexican riviera. I don't recall four ships ever being in LB.

BlerkOne

Some HI cruises used to go from San Diego, but it was always a ruse. Spirit would disembark passengers in San Diego, then head for Ensenada. Embarking passengers in San Diego would check in an then be bused to Ensenada to board the ship.

No, Spirit operated regularly from San Diego throughout the 2000s, and the Elation operated year-round from San Diego at one point.  Most of the trips were to Mexico; I can’t recall exactly which ship, but one of the Holiday-class ships performed the San Diego/Ensenada - Hawaii runs in the early 2000s, while Spirit did Mexico.  Here’s a news article discussing Carnival’s withdrawal from San Diego in the early 2010s - they made 27 calls the year before the withdrawal.

https://www.courant.com/sdut-san-diego-to-lose-yet-another-cruise-ship-2011jan13-htmlstory.html

Here’s a blog on the Elation’s year-round service:

https://carnival-news.com/2008/08/20/carnival-elation-to-shift-to-three-and-four-day-cruises-from-san-diego-beginning-in-february-2009/

And yes, there were four ships based at Long Beach seasonally at one point (early 2010s IIRC).   Two performed mostly 7-day runs to the Mexican Riviera, one performed the 3/4 day run to Ensenada currently operated by the Radiance and one performed a hodgepodge of itineraries as the Miracle does now (overnights at Cabo, some Hawaii, some extended Mexican Riviera, etc.).

I have a back to back booked also two 5 day cruises Nov 2 and Nov7th. Miracle is one of my favorites but as I posted earlier I am quite suspicious she may be on the move Down Under.

That was my first thought, wish they'd just be more transparent. I did read through and see stabilization problems.

We always get the turd ships in LA, though (IMO). Getting Panorama was a real shocker for me.

It's funny there's always so many mixed opinions on the ships a lot of people seem to love Miracle but I read one person on FB saying they want it scrapped along with Vista. Any reason someone would hate those 2 ships so passionately? LOL.

"Turd ships?"  In the last twenty years, on the 7-night Mexican Riviera run we got the Elation brand new and Panorama brand new, and Spirit and Splendor when they were literally months old.  We also got most of the Fantasy-class ships -- off the top of my head, in addition to the Elation, the Ectasy, Paradise, Inspiration and Imagination.  And the Miracle has probably spent most of its time based out of LA/SD, although it comes and goes... sometimes filling in on the 7-day, sometimes providing supplemental capacity.  And now we've got the Radiance; I haven't had a chance to enjoy her yet, but many reports are that it feels like a brand new ship.

And I think people project dislike to certain ships so passionately because they have no business/ financial intelligence: in a few years, when a bigger & better ship replaces the Mardi Gras, they'll be complaining about that ship, too.  I'm literally stunned by the number of posters on here who believe that (logistics aside) Carnival could put the Mardi Gras at even Jacksonville and make tons of money.

We are booked on Miracle over the 4th of July and San Diego is one of our port stops.  But I agree - I've been waiting for Carnival to base a ship out of San Diego, and finally gave up and settled for a port stop (and even that is pretty rare).

The West Coast seems to be getting more and more attention lately, which is good!

Panorama is about as new as it gets, Radiance looks great after the refurb and the Miracle has most of what people like on it. Now, personally, I wish they would take the Spirit class and do a full remodel akin to the Sunshine/Sunrise/Radiance. While I enjoy the "Farcus" uniqueness, the ship is really showing its age. I think refreshing the class would be a massive win as the layout is fantastic and size is just right.

A Spirit class full remodel would be welcome, however, my concern would be they’d mess with the Vista Suites and that would be catastrophic. Those 4th floor VS’s are the best suites we’ve sailed in. Not the fanciest, not the most Perk laden, not the largest….but still THE best. We’ve never been in a Captains Suite on Carnival or a Garden Villa on NCL so we haven’t tried them all yet, but have had large 2 bdrm, 2 bath suites and we’ll take the Vista Suite hands down, any time we can snag one!!

Booked on Miracle 10 days Alaska departing San Francisco May 2023 no changes yet

hapytobehr

I was on the Miracle for the May 2nd Alaskan Cruise.  I can tell you that it was the rockiest ship I have ever been on in all my years of sailing.

The seas were rough some days, but certainly not rough enough to produce the rockiness that we experienced during this cruise.

The first thing i said to my husband was that I wondered if there was a problem with the stabilizers so I am not surprised that it went to dry dock.

I do agree with the fact that the ship is showing her age because there certainly was a lot of wear and tear in many places.  I also can't imagine the mind of Farcus to come up with such a weird design.

Nonetheless, we had a wonderful time.

Great Review

I'm going on this ship for 10 days Sept 5 to 15th, right before the drydock. Hopefully we're smooth sailing before she gets some upgrades!

Unlike the East Coast, the waters are typically rocky off the West Coast this time of year.  Probably one of the reasons why, historically, Carnival is the lone wolf in serving the region (via Los Angeles) during the spring/summer months.

Definitely wasn't your ship -- the Panorama was extremely rocky last month, and there's reports that the Navigator of the Seas (doing the same itinerary as the Radiance for now) is the same.

I’ve cruised on Princess from San Francisco many times during different months & never experienced any real ruff weather. Perhaps I was lucky. I’m on the Miracle August 8, 2022 so I’ll see what the weather is like.

They have many cruises to Alaska. Use this link…. https://www.princess.com/search-cruise/results/  to see the Alaska Cruises from San Francisco on Princess.

Many other cruises throughout the year with Princess from San Francisco.

Next cruise to Alaska on Princess  on June 9, 2022.

I didn't know they operated summer cruises out of SF.  They're based in Los Angeles but haven't operated in the summer in ages it seems.

Since I live in San Francisco Princess  has been the main cruise line here. That’s one of the main ports in the West Coast, San Francisco.  Before the Pandemic San Francisco was the main port for Princess until they started moving other Princess ships here. Now with Carnival there a 2nd cruise line & they use our old cruise terminal, Pier 35 as Princess uses our new terminal Pier 27.

If you look at the Princess site for cruises from San Francisco you will see many cruise including the Panama Canal throughout the year. I’m going to Hawaii in November on Princess.

Splendor is sailing Seattle to Sydney at the end of the Alaska season. Spirit is sailing Seattle to Miami at the end of the Alaska season. Miracle is being drydocked early, for possible relocation to Oz. My question is what ship will do the long thin routes from the West Coast? Perhaps a HAL, or Princess ship? Could Miracle stay on the West coast and a P&O Aus ship do the Carnival trips? I have 4 Journeys booked on Miracle through 2024, so I'd like to know.

Is there any concrete evidence to suggest the Miracle is headed to Australia, or is it just wild speculation?  In another thread, a handful of posters were certain a certain ship would be deployed to Cuba... even though the "loop hole" Carnival used last time to serve Cuba (people-to-people) is still closed.  And even though they were successfully sued for using that loop hole (the trips were assumed to be vacations, not cultural exchange).

The cheapest cruises out of Long Beach status quo are in September & October.  During the "Memorial Day Sale," I booked a super cheap cruise on the Radiance that's now cancelled.  When was the Miracle's dry dock due?  It could very well be that revenue & bookings were projected to be slow in October.  The San Pedro Cruise Schedule shows quite a few ships operating in October, several performing the same itinerary as the Radiance.  It could very well be that the drydock was pushed forward, with the assumption that Carnival could generate far more revenue later (during its scheduled dry dock).

I agree - this has been my thought from the beginning, but of course just a guess.

My parents are on this cruise.  Carnival autobooked them into a balcony room on deck 6 which is above bonsai sushi, alchemy and two bars - red frog pub and piano bar. Definitley not how I booked them on the Miracle, I always book with cabins above and below. Anyone have experience with noise level in a cabin like this?  They are 6399 on Radiance.

Carnival also cancelled the steakhouse reservations and they specifically booked those reservations before they raised the price.  Now, Carnival won't honor the old price or give onboard credit for the difference...wow! It's only like $9 per person but still, I thought they could at least match the price for a situation they caused.

If the cabin is going to be a noise nightmare for 2 weeks, I'm not sure they are going to want to go.  Final payment is July 18 so they have time to get feedback.

The theory is that Costa Magica which is going to join the Carnival fleet later this year would do Miracle's cruises while Miracle goes to Australia.

On the same day that they announced Miracle's dry dock, a message went up on the Carnival Australia website that a new ship will be named for Brisbane soon. It would make sense for Miracle to take what was originally Spirit's place (before it went to US) because they are in the same class so it would be easy to transfer to bookings over.

Miracle had its last dry dock in 2020 right before the pandemic, so it could have been due in 2023 but I guess it needs one earlier.

It is also possible that Miracle could go to Australia, then another Carnival ship takes its place, and then Magica takes that ships place.

I would be devastated if they did away with my beloved bowling-alley balconies. The *only* cabin on a Spirit class ship that I would consider potentially better would be those Vista suites (which I haven't tried yet).

It might be low crew levels but i don't know. June 26 will mark one year since Carnival announced the transfer

I hate to even think about this! We are booked on the Miracle in January 2023 for a 14 day to Hawaii. We are booked in our most favorite Vista Suite. I don’t know anything about Costa Magica but am guessing there are no Vista Suites to transfer our booking. One more uncertainty to add to the problems of flying and cruising now!

Wild speculation IMO.   The Costa Magica’s renovation will likely be minimalist (changing the ship’s branding to Carnival standards), as it’s more upscale than the Carnival fleet.   IMO, it’d be a major upgrade over the Miracle.   But I don’t see the point in replacing the Miracle – it’s a larger ship, and it isn’t like the Miracle’s itineraries need more capacity.   The Miracle spends 9-months based out of Los Angeles, and there’s more capacity than ever in the market, leading to heavy discounts.    Why not just move the Magica to Australia to begin with?
