From J.Lo to Kylie, Celebs Swear By This £27 Product for the Perfect Blow-Dry

When it comes to blow-drying my hair, I am notoriously lazy. Despite my work as a beauty editor, I am decidedly nonchalant about all things hair—from washing it to styling it. While I can whizz off a list of dry-shampoo recommendations as long as my arm, new hair launches and trending hair tools are often left gathering dust at the bottom of my "to test" box. So while I was well aware of the hype surrounding Color Wow's Dream Coat Supernatural Spray (£27), it was another in a long line of buzzy hair products that had a home in my beauty stash but never saw the light of day—until this year, that is.

Honestly, I don't know what made me reach for it. Perhaps this winter's never-ending dreary weather had me seeking out shine in alternative places? But whatever it was that made me spray this product into my hair that January morning, I can only say thank you. This is one product that lives up to the hype, and I truly can't imagine my hair routine without it now. And I'm not alone. A staple in the backstage kit of celebrity hair artist  Chris Appleton , Color Wow Dream Coat even has the professional seal of approval.

So what actually is Color Wow Dream Coat? Simply put, it's like a waterproof cloak for your hair. After shampooing and conditioning as normal, you section your hair and spray the product liberally through your strands. You then blow-dry your hair—this product requires heat to activate, so no, air drying won't cut it—while pulling your hair as taut as possible to get that high-shine finish. Once you're done, your hair should be left glossy, smooth, free of flyaways and protected from the elements. And the results last, so you only need to use this every three to four washes.

But what sets it apart from other humidity-fighting products on the market? "I think one of the reasons for why  Color   Wow  Dream Coat is so successful is because there is no other product like it on the market," explains Appleton, whose roster of clients includes the likes of J.Lo, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner and Dua Lipa. "Not only does it have the weather-proof finish, but it improves and transforms the texture of the hair, ensuring it's frizz-free and silky smooth."

One of the main reasons that I was put off from trying Dream Coat for so long is that I find washing and drying my hair to be such a huge effort. The thought of potentially spraying something into it that would cause it to look greasy within a day or two (when I can often go five or six days between washes) just didn't appeal to me. However, Appleton assures me that this just doesn't happen with Dream Coat.

"My top application tip is to saturate the whole head of hair—don't be afraid to use a lot of product," he advises. "The formula is as light as water, so there is no chance of a greasy feel or finish. In fact, the more the better! You want to ensure each strand of hair gets the same treatment throughout."

I'd describe my hair as wavy in texture, prone to knots and tangles and hopelessly dry and dull-looking. This is typically what my hair looks like about three or so days post hair wash when, as you can see, there is no shine in sight—even when I'm outside in the brightest light possible.

When using Dream Coat, I shampoo and condition my hair as usual but skip any hair masks or extra-conditioning treatments. I then wrap my hair in a microfibre towel to remove excess moisture before separating my hair into about eight sections and spraying each one liberally with the product from root to tip. I am genuinely rubbish at blow-drying, so I can't say I'm able to really get my strands that taut, but I always follow this step by running a pair of straighteners over my hair to help really smooth out any remaining flyaways and seal in the treatment.

I am genuinely blown away by the results of this product every single time I use it. My hair has never looked so naturally shiny or felt as soft as it does when I use Dream Coat. And I love that the high-shine finish remains even if I then decide to add a curl in with some tongs or a hair waver. Plus, Appleton is totally right: It really doesn't weigh hair down or leave it greasy. In fact, I'd even go as far as to say that my hair lasts  longer between washes on the occasions that I use this—and it looks well-styled pretty much the whole time, too. 

Okay, so my hair might not look quite as impressive as J.Lo's Super Bowl look (which Appleton also used Dream Coat to create), but as a haircare-averse beauty editor, I'm more than happy with the results, and I can't stop recommending Dream Coat to everyone I know.

Finding a product that will successfully protect your hair against wind, rain and humidity is quite the task and yet, it’s one that Color Wow’s supernatural dream coat spray (£19.95, Lookfantastic.co.uk ) promises to do. The brand’s been on the market for more than 10 years and is coveted by the likes of celebrities Hailey Bieber and Jennifer Lopez , and hair stylist Gregory Russell.

With such a lofty reputation, you’d be inclined to believe the claims of “waterproof hair” and “glossy results for up to 72 hours”, but, then again, you can never be too careful when making the decision to part with your hard-earned money so we took it upon ourselves to put the product to the test.

Color Wow boasts a carefully curated product repertoire for – as its name suggests – coloured hair and locks in need of intervention. From the bombshell volumiser mousse (£19.20, Lookfantastic.co.uk ) to the all-new money repair masque (£31.60, Lookfantastic.co.uk ), the brand is somewhat of a one-stop-shop for fragile hair and has garnered quite the fanbase over the years.

Indeed, according to Color Wow, dream coat sells once every five seconds, not to mention racking up more than 20 industry beauty awards attesting to its staying power. But what does a beauty writer think of the brand’s star product? Keep reading for my thoughts.

How I tested

I applied the product liberally throughout the lengths and ends of my damp hair before blow-drying to a straight, sleek finish. For context, I have naturally wavy hair, so I was looking to see if the product could help maintain a straight finish. I assessed whether waves started to appear after exposing my locks to the UK’s tempestuous weather, testing its performance in wet and windy conditions. Here’s how it fared.

Color Wow dream coat supernatural spray

• Size : 200ml
• Key ingredients : Water, glycerin, moisture-retaining dipropylene glycol, softening silicone quaternium-18
• Applicator type : Spray
• Makes for a very silky, healthy-looking blow dry
• Smells wonderfully fresh
• Spray pump distributes evenly
• Doesn’t help to minimise tangle

With a moisturising formula, Color Wow’s dream coat is alcohol-free and sets out to maintain silky smooth locks. It promises to keep flyaways at bay, prevent unwanted moisture from affecting the hair’s texture and preserve a straight finish.

The spray has a citrusy and floral scent and it was easy to apply. The product goes a long way and, though I did apply liberally, I wasn’t spraying as much as I’d anticipated.

Dream coat is a heat-activated spray, so after blow-drying the product and styling my hair straight, I set about testing the product on a rainy day. The dream coat made getting my hairbrush through the lengths of my hair easier and didn’t increase the drying time, despite adding extra moisture.

After I’d styled my hair, I found the finish of my locks to be glossier than usual and it’s brought somewhat of a new lease of life to my fragile, long hair.

After four hours on a rainy day (without brushing), my hair was slightly clumped and tangled but remained straight and shiny. I made a point of not brushing my hair for the duration of the test and, from picture two (above) you can certainly tell that it’s in need of a detangle. The product helps to detangle locks while drying but doesn’t ensure a detangled state going forward, though this was never promised by the brand.

You can see evidence of a few flyaways around my scalp, but I’d argue this is a good result given the blustery weather and I definitely wouldn’t categorise the finished result as frizzy.

The verdict: Color Wow dream coat supernatural spray

Color Wow’s dream coat did a stellar job of keeping my hair straight and adding some serious gloss. There was no hint of a wave poking through and, my locks still looked relatively shiny after a day in the rain. There’s no denying that the spray is worth the investment.

My Dominican roots gave me the privilege of having naturally curly hair . But during my adolescence, I dreaded my mother combing through my curls every morning. They felt too heavy on my scalp, tangled too often and were too unpredictable to maintain. To manage, I would simply tie my hair in a tight bun each morning and call it a day. 

When I reached high school, I wanted to let my hair down . There was just one issue: my unruly curls. To make styling easier, I sought after permanent treatments that would straighten my hair in a way that prevented me from needing an iron every morning. After doing these treatments twice, I was left with immense damage . 

Now, it’s evident my hair is not as thick as it used to be. There are no curls, just waves that struggle to form. You might see them shape underneath or strive to find their curl on top. It’s a wavy mess to say the least, but the worst of it all is the dryness and frizz that all the processing left me (and those damaging treatments were more than seven years ago!). 

I am well aware that it might be impossible to get my natural curls back, let alone my hair back to health. But to my surprise, there is a possible solution to minimizing the look of damage: Color Wow's Dream Coat Spray

When you read about what the spray does for your locks, you’re struck by two things: it’s anti-frizz capabilities and anti-humidity technology. The two together apparently leave a glossy shield over your strands without the heavy residue. If any moisture were to get on your hair, videos from the brand suggest it slips right off. 

You'll need to use a blow dryer to activate the formula

To see these results, you have to shampoo and condition your hair first. The product needs a blank canvas, so once you’ve stepped out of the shower, only apply the product to towel-dried hair. Make sure it’s lots of it, too, in separate sections. That part is extremely important, and if you have an immediate post-shower hair routine like me, the step can be difficult to adhere to. But I made sure to put my styling products to the side (it is instructed you use them after you’ve blow dried) and let the product work its magic. 

At first, activating the product was a bit tricky for me. My daily hair routine consists of using a curl/wave mousse and gel to allow my waves to form. Then, I either use a diffuser to set or let my hair air dry by “plopping” (aka putting my hair in a microfiber towel to absorb moisture), depending on how much time I have. Since this product requires you to use your blow dryer and a round brush with tension (essentially giving your hair a blow out), I was worried my lack of technique would affect how it “seals.” It ended up being easier than expected, but I suggest setting some time aside in the morning to determine your best method.

The anti-frizz benefits were impressive

Once I was finished blow drying my hair, the shine was definitely peeking through. Although my hair wasn't as luminous as the modeled photos (evidently from my hair being on the drier side), there was certainly a difference in texture. Typically, my split ends are emphasized by texturizing and drying products. But the heat from the blow drier with the spray sealed my strands with its moisturizing ingredients, so my ends looked healthier than they did before use.

I’ve used a handful of hair masks , oils , serums and other solutions that promise to combat my damage. In those trials I’ve dealt with more errors than successes, but even the products that gave me some results did not meet everything I expected, fixing my frizz being one of them.

I was pleased to see that my frizz was more manageable and easy to comb through after using the spray. I did have some here and there, but my frizz wasn't as noticeable as it was before.

Another benefit of this product is its water-resistant properties (I tested it with a few droplets, and can confirm that they "slip off." After four to five washes, the product promises to stay put. My hair didn't stay blown out after a few washes, but it still looked more tame than it did with my more normal hair routine.

Since my hair has become thin over the years, the moisturizing properties in the formula were unfortunately too heavy on my head. That isn't its fault, though. The instructions do suggest lathering your hair with the spray for best results, so the application might need to be accommodated to suit thin and fine hair.

I’d argue that the Color Wow Dream Coat Spray is best used on its own or accompanied with a light hair oil once blow dried. It’s a very moisturizing formula, and can be too overwhelming for similar hair types. This glossy effect might be more appealing for those with naturally thick hair. So if your hair needs extra assistance with styling , this product will work well.

To put it simply: The product isn't meant for thin hair like mine, but will be great for fuller hair. In the meantime, I’ll still be on the hunt for the next best thing for me.

A s a beauty editor, I try a lot of products promising the world—particularly when it comes to hair care. Although many of them are brilliant, a lot of them fall flat—quite literally on my limp, fine hair . However, there is one product that I think deserves every inch of praise it gets: Color Wow Dream Coat.

If I didn't understand how it works then I'd think this product was pure magic. It's the only frazzle-free solution I've found that keeps my hair looking fresh and sleek , post sweaty workouts and no matter the weather.

Here's everything you need to know about this cult beauty product.

What is Color Wow Dream Coat?

The miracle-sounding product promises smooth, frizz-resistant waterproof hair for days on end (even with washes in between). It's by no means a new product - it launched way back in 2017 - but its fanbase seems to be growing every year, with more people are falling in love with its hardworking formula.

It comes in three options: Dream Coat Supernatural Spray (the original), Dream Coat Extra Strength and Dream Coat For Curly Hair.

How does Color Wow Dream Coat work?

Color Wow Dream Coat works by using heat-activated polymers that create an invisible coating around the hair strands. This in turn becomes sort of a humidity-proof and water-resistant barrier. The formula is weightless so despite spritzing lots of product throughout the hair, it won't feel or look heavy; great for those with thin and fine hair types.

It's also safe to use on colour and keratin-treated hair.

The results of Dream Coat

I've used this product for years so I know it works through all sorts of occasions and weather. I put it to the test once again for the purpose of this article, and during that time my hair survived four days, which included two workouts, multiple downpours and heavy winds, a bottomless brunch, a hangover and everything in between.

To use Dream Coat, I first wash and condition my hair (I tend to use a deep conditioner mask when using this product to give extra moisture and shine) and let it air dry for about 10-20 minutes so that it's not soaking wet. I then liberally spray Dream Coat onto my hair in sections; I'm not shy here, I really make sure I spritz throughout before brushing it through. I then roughly dry my hair before using either hair straighteners or the ghd Duet Blowdry .

Dream Coat is heat-activated so yes, you have to use some sort of heated tool to make it work. You also have to use some tension when styling to get that sleek look and create uniformity with the polymer film.

Here I am on day two, having battled lots of rain and wind. And yet, my hair looks in pretty good shape. Without applying the product, my hair would've looked a hot mess but as you can see it still looks fairly straight and smooth.

Here I am on day four having only brushed my hair through occasionally with my fingertips and not touching up the straightening at all. It's also been thrown in a bun on multiple occasions, which hasn't added any kinks or waves to it.

I will say, I can get away with not brushing it because of the texture and condition of my hair. My hair is healthy and not dyed, which means I'm not prone to tangles and knots. This also means that my hair is naturally rather shiny, which Dream Coat emphasises but isn't responsible for alone.

Final thoughts on Dream Coat

I'll never get tired of recommending this product because it does exactly as it promises (provided you actually follow the directions).

It works brilliantly to waterproof the hair and keep any style practically perfect no matter the weather. It's definitely on the pricier side, but it eliminates the need for multiple products to help add shine, smooth and keep frizz-free. Plus, you don't have to use it that often - every three to four washes should put you in a good place.

The only downside is that it does need heat activating, which isn't ideal if you prefer to air dry or want to curb your hot tool use.

It's the one styling product that helps me mimic that fresh-out-of-the-salon hair at home. As someone who isn't keen on spending lots of time doing my hair, this is a dream (pun, very much intended) and a product that'll remain in my routine for a long time.

There’s nothing worse than putting all your time and effort into blow drying your hair only to have it puff up into a huge frizz ball the moment you step outside. So what’s the secret for how to not get frizzy hair when blow drying ? It’s not just a matter of blow drying correctly, but preventing frizz even before you pick up your dryer.

Understanding why frizz happens

Whether your hair is fine, thick, coarse, curly or straight, frizz does not discriminate. So what’s the common denominator between these seemingly unrelated hair types? It’s a compromised cuticle layer. 

Frizz happens when the outer layer of your hair, known as the cuticle , becomes raised. A raised cuticle is the result of a few different factors, most commonly:

• Genetics – Some people are just born with it
• Color + chemical treatments – Processing your hair causes serious damage to the cuticle layer
• Heat styling – Excessive use of heat can zap all the moisture from your hair and leave it porous. Which leads us to… 

If you’re constantly wondering, “ why is my hair frizzy when I blow dry it ?” here’s why: 

• Constant blow drying (especially without heat protection ) creates a lot of wear and tear on your strands. Over time, this can lead to frizz because your blow dryer is zapping all the moisture from your hair.
• You also might be blow drying incorrectly. Blow drying is supposed to smooth your cuticle closed to help reshape your hair into a smoother, shinier finish. However, if you blow dry in a way that roughs up your cuticle, you’re not going to get that smooth finish.
• Lastly, if you don’t prep with the right products, you won’t get a frizz-free finish that lasts . Simply blow drying your cuticle smooth isn’t a permanent fix because you’re not addressing the real problems: dehydration and porosity . It’s important you prep your hair first with a leave-in treatment and/or anti-frizz treatment to ensure your smooth results last.

Preparing Your Hair for Blow Drying

The secret to how to stop frizzy hair when blow drying starts in the shower. To ensure sleek, frizz-free results that last, it’s important you follow all these steps.

1. Choose the right shampoo and conditioner

Your first thought when aiming for frizz-free hair might be to use an anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner duo. Our advice? Don’t do it! 

Instead, it’s actually leaving behind ingredients on your hair (and scalp!) in order to deliver on those frizz-free promises.

Here’s why that’s a problem:

• Not only does buildup create an unhealthy environment for your scalp, but it also leaves a layer of film on your hair . This makes it harder for your anti-frizz treatments and stylers to perform properly. Which defeats the purpose!
• The more buildup on your hair, the more you have to wash it. The problem is, frizzy hair should be washed less often, not more often. 

Because frizzy hair has a raised cuticle, it’s inherently dry and dehydrated . The more time you leave between shampoos, the more of a chance your scalp’s natural oils have to travel down each strand and provide moisture. But if you’re shampooing more frequently due to buildup, then you’re not allowing the oils to do their job. 

It’s also super important to choose a sulfate-free shampoo . Sulfates are aggressive when they clean and can compromise your cuticle layer, and you can read more about what they are with our guide to what it means to be SLS free .  Instead, it’s best to opt for a sulfate-free formula made with super gentle amino acid-based cleansers.

For curly hair results

When diffusing, there are a few key techniques to remember to help minimize frizz.

• Avoid using your hands or touching the diffuser to your hair while drying. Touching your curls can disrupt their definition, which can leave them looking fuzzy. 
• Don’t use high heat when diffusing. The high heat will dry your hair faster, but it will also dehydrate your hair. Opt for medium to low heat for a drying method that won’t zap all the moisture out.
• Diffuse your hair until it’s about 80% dry, then let it air dry naturally to avoid overdoing it on the heat.
• Rather than flipping your hair around constantly and diffusing different sections, focus on one section at a time until it reaches your desired dryness.

How to fix frizzy hair after blow drying

Nobody’s perfect, which means despite your best efforts, you might still see some frizzy hair after blow drying . This is especially true if you don’t prep with an anti-frizz treatment with long-lasting humidity-blocking tech. If this is the case, here’s how to make hair less frizzy after blow drying :

Formulated Without

• Shampoo, condition, and towel dry.
