It can be confusing, especially to first-time cruisers, to know when you have to plunk down an initial deposit, make your final payment, and when you're eligible for a refund. Some of this information isn't all that easy to find!

As a general rule, you put down a deposit at the time of booking, and then make final payment generally 60 to 90 days before the sailing date. If your plans change and you need to postpone or cancel, you can cancel and get a full refund if you cancel at least 90 days out (see below for slight variations — you'll notice Princess's refund policy is fairly strict ... sorry! we still love you, Princess!). Be aware that the cruise lines’ refund policies vary widely and change frequently.

Here's a Cheat Sheet of Cruise Deposit, Full Payment & Refund Deadlines for cruise passengers and travel agents (note: different rules apply to groups).

Disney Cruise Cancellation Policy – Complete Guide 2022

Disney Fantasy at Sea

Disclosure: This Disney Cruise cancellation policy page contains affiliate links. Read  full Disclosure Policy .

The D isney Cruise cancellation policy is one of the biggest questions from those considering a Disney cruise vacation .

Before you book a  Disney Cruise , you might ask yourself:

“Can I change my mind later and get my money back?

The short answer is  yes…usually.

Most stateroom reservation deposits can be fully refunded, as long as you cancel prior to your “Paid in Full” (PIF) date.

In this article, I will explain the basics of the  Disney Cruise cancellation policy  and how much of a refund you can get if you have to back out of your trip.

Table of Contents

  • Can I cancel a Disney Cruise and get my money back?
  • What is a Paid In Full date?
  • How to cancel a Disney Cruise?
  • What are the cancellation fees?
  • Can I change my Disney Cruise date?
  • Flexible Refund Policy due to COVID-19

Can I Cancel a Disney Cruise and Get My Money Back?

In most cases,  yes , you can cancel and get a full refund.

Full refunds are available if you cancel before your Paid in Full (see below) date.

There are a couple exceptions to this:

1) If you want to cancel a suite or Concierge reservation.

In this case, you will lose your deposit amount per guest when cancelling anytime before your paid in full date.

2) You booked using “Guarantee with restrictions”

The “Guarantee with restrictions” category staterooms such as categories IGT, OGT, and VGT are non-refundable and must be paid in full at time of booking.

What is a “Paid in Full” Date?

Your Paid in Full (PIF) date will vary and will depend on your itinerary, sail date, and cruise length.

It will fall somewhere between 90 and 120 days prior to your departure.

To find out your specific date, check your confirmation email or logon to your  My Cruise Reservation  on the Disney Cruise Line website.

How to Cancel a Disney Cruise

Cancellations must be made over the phone (800-951-3532) or in writing.

If you booked through a  travel agent , make sure to go through them to cancel. They will take care of you.

What are the Disney Cruise Cancellation Fees?

For sailings through december 31, 2022.

Due to ongoing concerns about COVID-19, Disney has relaxed the cancellation fees and offered some travel flexibility on voyages taking plce before the end of 2022.

WHAT’S DIFFERENT : For sailings through December 31, 2022, the cancellation fee has been relaxed to full refunds available up to 59 days prior to sailing. For all other sailings, see the regular cancellation fee schedule below.

For Sailings After December 31, 2022 , aka The Standard Fees

There are NO fees if you cancel any Disney Cruise more than 90 days prior to the date you sail (aka, commencement date).

If you need to cancel your DCL reservation AFTER your Paid in Full date, there are cancellation fees.

Here is a list of fees depending on your sailing:

Cruises 1 to 5 Nights (Excluding Suites and Concierge Staterooms) Days Prior to Vacation Commencement Date – Fee Amount

  • 89 to 45 days – Deposit per Guest
  • 44 to 30 days – 50% of vacation price per Guest
  • 29 to 15 days – 75% of vacation price per Guest
  • 14 days or less – 100% of vacation price per Guest

Cruises 6 Nights or More (Excluding Suites and Concierge Staterooms) Days Prior to Vacation Commencement Date – Fee Amount

  • 119 to 56 days – Deposit per Guest
  • 55 to 30 days – 50% of vacation price per Guest

Suite and Concierge Staterooms: All Sailings Days Prior to Vacation Commencement Date – Fee Amount

  • 90 days or more – Deposit per Guest
  • 89 to 56 days – 50% of vacation price per Guest
  • 55 to 30 days – 75% of vacation price per Guest
  • 29 days or less – 100% of vacation price per Guest

CATEGORIES WITH RESTRICTIONS Reservations for Inside, Outside or Verandah Categories with Restrictions are NON-REFUNDABLE and NON-TRANSFERABLE. That is, there are no refunds. A 100% cruise cancellation fee applies from time of payment.

Can I change my Disney cruise reservation to another date?

If you’re sailing on or before September 30, 2022, you can change your sail date up to 15 days prior to departure.

KEEP IN MIND

  • If you want to change your sail date, you must move your sail date to one that starts BEFORE September 30, 2023.
  • You won’t be able to switch your reservation back to the original sail date after making this change.
  • If you cancel your new sail date, cancellation fees will be the greater of: a) cancellation fees that would have been applicable to the original sail date; or b) cancellation fees applicable to the new sail date.
  • Standard air cancellation fees apply if you booked flights through Disney Cruise Line.

Flexible Refunds for COVID-19 Related Issues

If you are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms or have been exposed to the virus, Disney Cruise Line currently will allow you to receive a refund without Disney-imposed cancellation fees OR apply your cruise fare to another sailing in the future.

Placeholder Deposit Refund - Cautionary Tale

By kevdad , January 9, 2019 in Disney Cruise Line

Recommended Posts

50+ Club

18 months ago we were on the Fantasy and booked two placeholder reservations.  I called my big-box travel agency today to have my $500 refunded as we are unable to cruise before the deadline.  Since the credit card I used for the deposit was canceled due to fraud I am now expected to get a letter from the credit card company (Chase) stating that the card was canceled and that there is zero balance.  Then I have to FAX that to Disney with a copy of my drivers license.  And all within the next 7 days.  And Chase just said it would take 7 days to send the letter to me.

Why the use of fax (very 1980s; maybe I'll call them using my bag phone next time) and why all this within 7 days is beyond me.  Hopefully this works out, but just a word of caution to those that may not use their placeholder reservations.

As a side note, both the agency representative and especially the Chase rep laughed out loud when they heard what Disney is expecting (the Chase rep said, "they're not expecting very much, are they?"  I just had to laugh along with them...

Good to know. We booked a placeholder using our Chase Visa last month, and recently had to cancel that card and get a new one due to fraudulent charges. Think I'll call DCL and see if they can change the CC number, even though I don't plan to cancel the placeholder. Thanks for the "heads up".  👍

250+ Club

That’s weird they’d make you do all that. I’ve had so many cards cancelled for fraud and when I get a refund it just goes to the new card I’ve never had to do anything extra. This is usually with Disney hotels. I feel like the refund would just automatically go on your new card.

Fax because fax is secure - you should not be emailing an image of your driver's license or credit card info (or passport, or banking information, etc.). Email is not secure.

You could send a password encrypted attachment, but quite frankly most people don't know how to do that correctly, or then how to coordinate the password with the recipient.

How Much is a Disney Cruise Line Deposit?

Disney Cruise Line Pirate Night

Those who have previously vacationed to Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World may be used to the standard $200 deposit that is required to book a Disney vacation. However, when it comes to Disney Cruise Line, things are a bit different.

Rather than having a specific price to pay, Guests who are booking a Disney Cruise are required to pay 20% of the total cruise fare. This amount, of course, will vary for each booking party. Varying factors include party size, sailing date, number of nights, itinerary, and which ship you’re sailing on.

Disney Cruise Line Deposit Due Date

Disney Cruise Line stateroom

In order to confirm the booking of a Disney Cruise, the deposit payment is required. The deposit, however, is NOT required at check out. Disney Cruse Line offers a 3 day hold on cruises. You will be able to select all the specifics of your cruise, add it to your cart, and then select to have your cruise held for 3 days.

If you choose this option, you will be given a Deposit Due Date at check out. According to the Disney Cruise Line Deposit Policy, if the deposit is not paid by 11:59pm EST on the due date, your cruise will automatically be canceled and you will need to start the booking process over.

How to Handle the Remaining Balance of Your Disney Cruise

Disney Dream

After the deposit is made and the cruise is confirmed, it’s easy to take care of the rest of the balance on your Disney Cruise. With Disney Cruise Line, you are able to make payments that are convenient for you up until your Balance Due Date. This payment option is completely flexible. Payments are able to be made in any amount at any time.

If your Disney Cruise is 5 nights or less, your final payment will be due 90 days prior to your embarkation day. If your cruise is 6 nights or longer, your final payment will be due 120 days prior to your embarkation day.

Are Disney Cruise Line Deposits Refundable?

Disney Cruise Line The Little Mermaid coffee art

In regard to cancellations, the Disney Cruise Line Deposit Policy varies depending on the specifics of your cruise.

If you’re in a category with restrictions, whether that be an Inside, Outside, or Verandah category with restrictions, you will not receive a refund for your deposit or any other portion of your cruise. Categories with restrictions are completely nonrefundable and nontransferable. From the time of payment, there is a 100% cruise cancellation fee for all categories with restrictions.

For all other sailings, the cancellation policy depends on both the length of your cruise and which category you are staying in. There is a select window of time in which you must cancel your cruise in order to have your deposit refunded.

For cruises that are 1-5 nights , you must cancel at least 90 days prior to the vacation commencement date. To have your deposit refunded for cruises that are 6 nights or longer , you must cancel at least 120 days prior to your vacation commencement date. Deposits are nonrefundable for Suites and Concierge Staterooms.

Disney Cruise Line Vacation Protection Plan

Disney Cruise Line spa

To avoid losing your deposit or even more of your cruise cost, consider covering your cruise with the Disney Cruise Line Vacation Protection Plan. With the Vacation Protection Plan, you will have coverage no matter what!

In the event that your Disney Cruise is canceled or interrupted due to sickness, injury, death, or another covered reason, you will have coverage up to the total trip cost ($20,000 limit) .

If you need to cancel for a non-covered reason, you are still taken care of with the Vacation Protection Plan. Under the “Cancel For Any Reason” portion of the plan, Guests can cancel for any reason and receive a credit towards a future Disney Cruise. This credit will be up to 75% of the cancellation fee amount and will be valid for one year from the date it’s issued.

The Disney Cruise Line Vacation Protection Plan can be added to your cruise online during the booking process or by calling (800) 951-3532.

What about the Wonder.

' src=

The wonder isn’t sailing right now. I suspect the Fantasy will be next. And once they begin test cruises for the Wonder they will issue their guidelines.

' src=

Probably right for the Wonder. DCL will have that as the last ship to make test runs since it has to come here to the west coast. We had our cruises postpones from March/April this year but we did get the 125% refund to apply. If all the other ships past muster, then the Wonder will have smooth sailing for us on the west coast. One nice thing is that this gave all the ships time to become all shipshape & Bristol fashion.

' src=

I decided that my cruise wasn’t worth the concierge price I had paid, and managed to get my reservation downgraded, but the DCL rep did tell me that the relaxed refund policy didn’t apply to concierge. If I had tried to outright cancel as opposed to downgrade, she said that I would have forfeited my deposit. She might have been wrong or misinformed, just be wary if you have concierge that there could be different rules for you.

A couple of weeks ago. We met up at Down Town with friends of ours from Arizona who we met on a cruise and have sailed with a few more time. They told us they were able to get a cruise on the WISH at Concierge level for a sailing for the first 4 day cruise. They told us the they would loose out if they ever had to cancel because that level is different for some reason. If you cruise Concierge, you are committed according to what they said.

' src=

In the UK we were told that the deposit would not be refundable under the new rules (which are pretty much the same as the ones for the Dream) but could be transferred to a future cruise. We were also told if we downgraded then the money will still not be refundable it would need to be moved to another cruise so what you were told is correct.

I cancelled a March Concierge reservation and received a full refund.
